Bootstrapping the Industrial Age
We're too far enough removed from the manufacturing of our current technology to be able to replicate what these men did - but so long as a few people keep some of the knowledge alive we can rebuild the chain. After all no one knows how to make a pencil yet millions of them get made every year.
A favorite fantasy game for engineers is to imagine how they might re-invent essential technology from scratch. If you were stranded on an island, or left behind after Armageddon, and you needed to make your own blade, say, or a book, maybe a pair of working radios, what would it take to forge iron, make paper, or create electricity?
Occasionally tinkerers get to engage their fantasy. In February 1942, R. Bradley, a British Officer in the Royal artillery in World War II was captured and then held prisoner by Japanese in Singapore. Their camp was remote, supplies were almost non-existent, and they were treated roughly as POWs; when they rebelled they were locked in a confinement shed without food. But they were tinkerers, too. Together with some other POWs in his camp, Bradley stole hand tools from the Japanese soldiers and from these bits and pieces he transformed scrap metal into a miniature lathe. The small lathe was ingenious. It was tiny enough to be kept a secret, big enough to be useful. It could be disassembled into pieces that could be tucked in a backpack and moved in the camp's many relocations. Since large pieces of metal were hard to acquire without notice, the tailstock of the lathe was two steel pieces dovetailed together. The original bed plate was cut with a cold chisel.
And from that lathe they were able to build a duplicate key for the solitary confinement shed and a hidden battery source for a secret radio.
Meanwhile another group of British POWs managed to build a working radio receiver (and nearly a transmitter) in a Japanese camp:
The plan was made to begin building the radio, so until we could build components, there was nothing much we could do. A look at the circuit diagram of a regenerative receiver indicates a number of capacitors - about two or three are required -low capacitors to make the oscillating part of the system work, and in fact from memory we needed in the grid circuit at least one ".01 microfarad" capacitor and there was no chance we could get this anywhere, or any other components.
So we hit upon the idea of taking some tin foil or aluminum foil from the lining of the tea chest from which the Japanese supplied with the rice rations, then by the well known equations for calculating capacity and the relationship of the surface area and spacing of the plates, we built a capacitor or, at least, I built a capacitor which according to calculations should have been about ".01 microfarad."
And finally were able to get news from the outside world:
It was the BBC all right; it was quite a clear signal but it was somebody talking about growing hops in Kent. This broadcast went on for something like three quarters of an hour without any interruption, but ultimately the signal faded out and I was very annoyed. I was asked the next morning by my senior officer what was the news, and I said "we've got good news; I can't talk here, come this way." So he came along and said "what's this news you're talking about." I said I didn't actually hear any news, and he became very annoyed with me and said what the hell did I mean, and I said "if the British primary producing experts are capable and able to spare the time to talk about growing hops in Kent, Britain must still be alive and floating with their thumbs up, and as far as I'm concerned that's the best news I could hear!"

Some regulation actually makes products so dysfunctional that people are essentially compelled to modify them in to something less safe than the supposedly dangerous pre-regulation edition.
I bet I've spilled far more gas over the lawnmower with the new style gas cans in the last year than I did in years with the old style.

People kept waking up, appearing progressively guiltier as the hour grew later. Big Ben-perhaps the hero of this work?-appeared over and over, heroically standing tall against a deep blue sky in one clip. Later, a man hung off its minute hand, trying to stop time. Oh, if only!
"The Clock" is 24 hour length film solely made up of scenes from other movies that refer to the corresponding time. And just the snippets here are pretty mesmerizing.

Apparently large breasted women have "denser" mammary glands and my mammogram showed a "spot" that was denser than the rest so it looked suspicious. The ultrasound showed nothing. I was gonna go into detail on the ONT but looks like Maet is running behind. So all you large breasted women out there, if it ever happens to you don't freak out. Still.. 6 days of wondering and worrying were no fun

For the rest of us, it's all about hacks and evasion. Working toilets may be obtained from Canada, for those of us in the Northern latitudes. Removing the obstructions from a newly-bought showerhead is a routine chore for me, and I can't be the only one.
It's all beginning to resemble Greece and Italy, where there are many laws, but few that are actually obeyed.

We had a natural birth for our daughter, but my wife was a low risk pregnancy. My wife's kind of hardcore; wants to face the thing full-on. Refused not just pain meds but also those weird 'homoepathic remedies' which are, as far is she is concerned, drugs as well.
Good part is, most of the labor isn't painful for her, just the part where the head is comin' out. But the midwives and our doula helped out, and no tearing.
Healthy (but somewhat small) kid.

Water velocity is increased in some low flow designs which helps if you own a home with low water pressure. But the point that you made about choice is the important one. Having daughters I installed low flow shower heads by choice since I'm a cheap mean bastard.

Apparently large breasted women have "denser" mammary glands and my mammogram showed a "spot" that was denser than the rest so it looked suspicious. The ultrasound showed nothing. I was gonna go into detail on the ONT but looks like Maet is running behind. So all you large breasted women out there, if it ever happens to you don't freak out. Still.. 6 days of wondering and worrying were no fun

That happened to my wife, drs. need to be better bout telling women to not panic. Her dense spot was prolly caused by an injury in a car accident. We still need to watch it because of her family history but don't worry and stress out about every thing.

Couple of years back, Consumer Reports was doing a thing on shower heads. They all sucked, save one. "Hmmmm....", think the geniuses, "let's check water flow." Then they narked out the one functional clearly-superior shower head to the Feds for not being low-flow.
OTOH, when we remodeled our master bath 15 years ago, we replaced the original with a 1.6 gal American Standard "Cadet" that, amazingly, actually worked better than the original. So we replaced the one in the hall bath, too. Fast-forward to a couple of months back, broke the tank in the master bath and....they no longer make it. Standard now is 1.3 gal. Had to graft on a completely different tank to stay 1.6 gal.

yeah according the furnace guys here new national regulations went into effect that all new furnace installations must be for the 95% efficient or whatever it is. The problem is that those furnaces generate a lot of moisture that then needs huge piping to send it outside. Not only is a lot of moisture a bit of an issue here, but a lot of furnaces here aren't in convenient locations to suddenly run a giant pipe across the ceiling.
So, instead of doing the sensible thing and updating my furnace before the new regulations I procrastinated. And now there is a chance that I am looking at a bit of a remodel job in addition to replacing the furnace. Grr.

This is getting more traction with the 4K screens. Sony has a box you can get, which is a locked down custom PC, which plays 4K content from Sony's library, such as the Spider-man movies.

Hi rons. I keep a few gas cans for my generator and such. Most are Pre-Gore. But the one I bought recently, you have to move a plastic switch to push down a plastic tab to splash gas like a drunk man that forgets to lift the toilet seat lid. I was told it splashes a lot.

I've been using my old gas cans from the farm, family sold it last year so I'm done after 32 years. Someone at my other job, historical society, brought in a new gas can. Worthless POS, spills more gas everywhere. Stupid design, stupid.

TR-- I can't tell how much I wish that was the problem. The pluggy stuff was grease. Which implies that the air handler motor is dripping stuff. I have things back up and running (after bailing 6 two gallon pails of water, carting down pull-down stairs), and will check further in the a.m., after the attic cools overnight. I also need to go but one of those cheapie drill-driven pumps.

As I reported a few weeks ago, it also has some serious dumb. At one point, Catwoman lectures the POTUS about the need for gun control. This is the career criminal who carries a whip and has claws built into her gloves, Catwoman.

As I describe above..., it isn't the line per se. The pan beneath the cooling coil catch pan has an outlet (3/4" PVC) to a condensate pump. It is THAT line that stopped up, between the coil catch pan, and the condensate pump. That pan overflowed into a fabricated sheet metal pan which sits under the entire air handler. That secondary pan had a float switch, just in case of such an occurrence.

Apparently large breasted women have "denser" mammary glands and my mammogram showed a "spot" that was denser than the rest so it looked suspicious. The ultrasound showed nothing. I was gonna go into detail on the ONT but looks like Maet is running behind. So all you large breasted women out there, if it ever happens to you don't freak out. No, it's more the issue Esteban points out-Ben's doing the same thing here. You can print up a stock market to a point, but you will eventually run into one of at least two problems. A) The money you printed got loaned to people who put it into the market (which is why it's inflated) and if enough of them try to take profits, the multiplicative effects of margin apply to the downside. B) You devalue your currency to the point that business input costs eat up their profits, ruining their cash flow, sending the actual value of the stock to nothing-which is like A, but not much of anyone comes out ahead.

No my brother....not even close...
You must spot them, from above and then dive down and "HOVER" over them from about 2+ feet above and then try to Pounce with your hand and grab them.. all the while trying to keep your position above them in the rather stiff ebb and flow of the current so close to shore. If your grab is off by "Just that much!" All you get is a large puff of sand an NO LOBSTER!

They lowered the age of consent in Belgium about 2 months before a minister {not sure his position} was going to get brought up on charges of soliciting minors ... about 10 - 15 year ago ...

I got some more rest. I am the kind of person who needs eight hours or I don't function well. Eventually, my lack of sleep will catch up with me and I will pass out for 9 or 10 hours.
Regarding the earlier discussion about water flow and toilets, I live in a 68 year old house with it's original toilet and bathtub. My little house was built solid. So is the john. Works like a charm every.single.time.
