How to Explain Conservatism to Your Squishy Friends

The individual is the wellspring of conservatism. The purpose of conservative politics is to defend the liberty of the individual and - lest individualism run riot - insist upon individual responsibility.On why we're only as free as the wild Stephanopoulos.The great religions (and conservatives are known for approving of God) teach salvation as an individual matter. There are no group discounts in the Ten Commandments, Christ was not a committee, and Allah does not welcome believers into Paradise saying, "You weren't much good yourself, but you were standing near some good people." That we are individuals - unique, disparate and willful - is something we understand instinctively from an early age. No child ever wrote to Santa: "Bring me - and a bunch of kids I've never met - a pony, and we'll share."
Virtue is famously lonely. Also vice, as anyone can testify who ever told his mother, "All the other guys were doing it." We experience pleasure separately; Ethan Hawke may go out on any number of wild dates, but I'm able to sleep through them. And, although we may be sorry for people who suffer, we only "feel their pain" when we're full of baloney and running for office.
But what about the old, the poor, the disabled, the helpless, the hopeless, the addled and the daft?Conservatism is sometimes confused with Social Darwinism or other such me-first dogmas. Sometimes the confusion is deliberate. When those who are against conservative policies don't have sufficient opposition arguments, they call love of freedom "selfish. " Of course it is - in the sense that breathing is selfish. But because you want to breathe doesn't mean you want to suck the breath out of every person you encounter. Conservatives do not believe in the triumph of the large and powerful over the weak and useless. (Although most conservatives would make an exception to see a fistfight between Norman Schwartzkopf and George Stephanopoulos. If all people are free, George Stephanopoulos must be allowed to run loose, too, however annoying this may be.)
But some people cannot enjoy the benefits of freedom without assistance from their fellows. This may be a temporary condition - such as childhood or being me when I say I can drive home from a bar, just fine, thank you very much, at three a.m. - or, due to infirmity or affliction, the condition may be permanent. Because conservatives do not generally propose huge government programs to combat the effects of old age, illness, being a kid or drinking 10 martinis on an empty stomach, conservatives are said to be "mean-spirited."

On April 29, Sir Jay Merchant was knighted by Ambassador Rudolf Bekink on behalf of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Merchant is the "international relations adviser" in the Office of the Administrator of CMS, which is the agency's highest executive office.
While this may seem like just a neat factoid for inside-the-Beltway water-cooler amusement, there's actually a constitutional problem that precludes this gallant story from having a fairytale ending.
To wit Article I, Section 9, Clause 8:
No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.
But of course Sir Jay never got permission from Congress nor has he renounced the knighthood.

1. There's a ton of new shooters, and shooters with new guns. Tens of millions have new guns have found new owners, and retailers tell us a high percentage of them are first-time buyers, and another large segment is people long away from shooting or gun ownership that are coming back to it. The entire demographics of shooting is changing, as a visit to a range will show you. These new shooters need ammo, and their mentors and trainers need ammo to train them with. That's not all of it, but it's one factor.
2. Economists know that when the price or availability of a desired good rises, one predictable effect is the consumption of an alternative good in its place. The .22 rimfire is the long-standing alternative to expensive and scarce centerfire calibers like 5.56, 7.62, 9mm and .40. As a result, the shortage of any one of these calibers becomes, in time, a shortage of .22; and to a lesser extent it becomes a shortage of all of these calibers.
3. People who were comfortable buying shooting and hunting ammo day-of or day-before have been spooked by the shortage into carrying an inventory. The longer the shortage continues, the more of these guys there are, the more of an inventory they feel they need. Exercise for the reader: if you shoot 500 rounds a week, how many rounds do you need to weather six months' disruption in supply? Before you say we'll never have six months' disruption, stop and think: we're in about month eight of a shortage right now. People who never stored ammo before are hoarding it now, and people who hoarded it already are hoarding more. This is probably the single biggest factor.
4. People who concentrate on preparedness, for example the readers of Jim Rawles's website and novels, have realized that .22LR ammo is a lasting store of value that has more stability in good times and bad than currency or even gold. (If the rule of law collapses, gold may still have value but may be difficult and risky to exchange). We think this is a larger factor. A lot of people who aren't going to get fully on board with preparedness and move to the mountains like Jim recommends, will still take incremental actions like storing necessities: food, drinking water, and .22 ammo

The party, Gamaa al-Islamiyya, not only holds conservative views against sunbathing, women wearing shorts, and alcohol, but is also responsible for the 1997 attack in Luxor that killed 60 tourists.
And of course Gamaa al-Islamiyya just issued a fatwa against building anything for tourism:
"A fatwa, or religious decree, published on the Gamaa al-Islamiyya's Web site advised members of the group not to build tourist accommodations. 'Because tourist villages have aspects that anger Allah, including alcohol, gambling and other forbidden things, building these hotels and villages is considered aiding their owners in sin and aggression, and is not permitted,' the decision read."
Eh - that 11% of Egyptian GDP and 90% of jobs in Luxor was overrated anyway. Allah will provide.

I've been trying for a while to distill conservatism down to five principles. So far I have
1. Christ is not an elected position.
2. The absence of a law is better than a law never enforced.
3. Everything has a cost.
4. Habit, Tradition and Ritual are often just as important as written law.
I would disagree with a lot of conservatives in that I don't think the foundation of conservatism is liberty. Instead, I think it's rule of law. It's the idea that the State's actions are regular and predictable, and that any citizen can know what the consequences of their own actions will be. Liberty is a logical conclusion drawn from maximizing this principle: the larger the state, the more it must rely on an army of bureaucrats and petty princes to determine when to apply the resources of the state to enforce the law. The result is tyranny.

I don't see the logic... if application of Law is all that's important... then you can have the application of unjust laws which work against the Liberty of the People.
Congress made the NSA spying on us LEGAL.... which makes my point...
Part of the problem is that when you have a very powerful entity, whose only Job it is to make Laws... then to do their job they have to continue to make law, even after you really don't need any more...

I'm actually not involved in the prolife movement. I support it heartily and defend it, but I leave the protesting and such to people who can restrain themselves from punching the clinic workers which I doubt I could.

If you say one single word, it should be "attorney" or "lawyer" or "counsel". If you have to say two words, they should be "ambulance chaser". That would have saved the criminal mastermind Martha Stewart a spell in the federal pen.

It's possible that it was a quiet affair and they felt that announcements prior would create too many hurt feelings from people not invited. Or it may be a case where there was some sort of pushback from the groom's family (not against you personal!). Sometimes these situations become "damned if you do, damned if you don't". My recommendation is to send her a small gift with a card announcing your congratulations and invite her to lunch at some later date. If you're still hurt then, you could certainly bring it up, but I wouldn't say more than, "I'm sure it was a lovely wedding, and I just wish I had known beforehand."

The Pittsburgh Pirates are 13 games above .500. This is the baseball team that has defined suck since 1992. They have been awful. Historically awful. Now, pretty good. There in third but apparently the NL Central is pretty good. Well the top 3 teams are anyway. Who knows, maybe playoffs this year. I don't know how to act around a winning baseball team. I haven't had one since I was 22 and I was stationed in the UK so I didn't see much. I did see the 1992 NLCS. I'm still scarred.

A bunch of really smart traders with great track records have been calling the financial endgame for Japan since back when George H.W. Bush was President. (Note the "H".) It's been a while now.
The supposed endgame has always been endlessly postponed.
If my memory is correct, Kyle Bass started proclaiming The End, Part II, The Revenge, about eighteen months ago. The only thing that would have happened to people who took that trade and shorted Japan Inc. is that they would have been stopped out with heavy losses by the Abenomics runup.
Eventually Japan's demographic implosion and its massive debt load will catch up with it, to be sure. In the meantime, those who would speculate on Japan's demise would do well to take counsel of Adam Smith, who said sagely that "there is a great deal of ruin in a nation".
Especially if the Japanese restart their nuclear reactor fleet. There was a huge irrational public freakout in Japan after Fukushima, even though the rest of the country's nuclear plants were in good shape, and the total of radiation induced deaths from Fukushima is holding steady at zero trending to zero.
Nevertheless, Japan's government closed all of the nukes. This led to huge fossil fuel imports and a giant hit to the Japanese balance of payments. That is being rethought. If the nukes come back on line, and the fossil fuel import costs abate, then The End, Part II, The Revenge gets pushed out a few more years.

Those aren't laws, they are rules designed to protect the powerful and connected at the expense of the masses.
We're operating off of different definitions. My definitions of law is merely a formal instruction by the state regarding behavior. In other words, "Do X / Don't do Y"
The "Rule of Law" then is merely the application of a law and the appropriate punishments in all cases, without favor to particular individuals.
I should not that it is possible to have unjust laws and the rule of law. "Women may not own property" would be considered an unjust law, but if it was applied to all women without favor to say, Mrs. Smith because she's married to the Prime Minister, then the rule of law still stands.
From this I can then derive some observations:
1) As the number and scope of laws increase, they will increasingly come into conflict.
2) As a population grows and changes, the laws will become out of step with the needs and behaviors of a portion or all of that population.
As a result of these two observations, I conclude that as any state increases in regulatory complexity, it increasingly requires specialists to decide not just if the law must be applied to a particular situation, but if it should be applied to a particular situation. In other words, the increasingly regulatory state undermines the very notion of a rule of law.
Liberty then, is the solution out of the problem of dealing with modern society. It is the idea that we as individuals are responsible for determining the course of our own lives and that the state should only interfere when it absolutely must.

Wouldn't it necessarily have a divot where the firing pin hit last time? Seems to me that you're looking at a likely 10% failure rate if your next use ends up too close to the divot.

When you reset the modem, unless you've paid extra for a static IP address (useful for hosting web sites or FTP sites), your modem will get a different IP address on reboot. That will change your hash.

Thing is, it got back-burnered over a year ago, and I don't know if I've relocated all the parts....I know I had sketched out some very specific construction drawings -- which I haven't found -- but don't remember why they seemed so critical, as I'm looking at something much easier now.
Essentially, it's a chest freezer where you take off the hinged top, put a 4" collar between the freezer and the lid, and put four taps and new temperature-regulating electronics in the collar. Holds four 5-gallon "Cornie" mini-kegs. I've had the freezer, kegs, faucets, temp controller rig (even tested!), and wood stacked around for a while.
I believe I was originally thinking about doing a 5" collar, but I have no idea why.

I think if you were absolutely bound and determined to do it, you could reload .22's. But unless you rolled out the divot made by the firing pin, if a reload landed with that divot under the firing pin, you'd get a misfire.
I think that the cost and effort required to do the reloading would exceed the value of the reloaded shells. But if .22 became completely unavailable, I could see some guys trying it.

I've actually forgotten -- though I have the notes. All extract, ale yeast, hops at initial boil, 5 minutes before end, 2 minutes before end....it was a shakedown batch to see if all the equipment worked correctly (it didn't). I'll be pleased and surprised if it's drinkable. But once the fridge is done, I can have 4 types of my own beer available at all times. Each cornie holds 53 12-oz "bottles" of beer......so if it's only me, I could brew every couple of weeks or so. I'd anticipate, however, that having this operational might involve me sharing.

It's a little chest freezer -- mine happens to branded Kenmore, but it's made by someone else....I used to know who when I got all this stuff. Since I've got cutting measurements, I can tell you it's 41-3/16" across and 21-13/16" back-to-front. The inside cavity is 28-5/8" deep.

Yeah, I thought the bathroom thing was fun, too -- the BH normally dries her socks on the shower door's inside handle, and during the winter we have a large Boston fern in there who we've named "Fred". But the floor of the shower has room for up to 3 fermenters, and it's near the core of the house so the temperature is steady.

I've got a ton of those, but I'm trying to thin the list and take out some of the "overthink" ones -- like this kegerator dealio. It's nice, it's fun, its priority is significantly less than a bunch of other stuff.....but it's got too many moving pieces to keep track of, so it's contributing greatly to my feeling overloaded. Once I get it done, I can re-purpose a zillion "worry circuits" in my neurons to more important things.

She is the director of new media. It is HER JOB to create good PR for Freedomworks. By her stubbornly not doing anything but bleating about people being like democrats and whining about the scrutiny she is getting, then she is showing me that she is not fit for the job. I don't think she should be fired over a tweet, but her handling of this situation is not emblematic of a person who knows how to be a media director...

I'll be honest, I am not a huge fan of Levin. I do think he is, often, over-the-top angry. But I'll also state for the record that I haven't heard a whole lot of his shows. Maybe those were just the few that I listened to.

Freedomworks is an open borders cesspool, put together by Dick Armey and other career politicos. It doesn't have the guts to choose sides in the Amnesty battle. That is outrageous.

For trying to take a shot at someone on her own side, then attempt to make a mountain out of a molehill, when the nature of her job was to build momentum for a movement? My little Sith apprentice flooded the basement at work today. Not in and of itself such a bad thing, but when the flood is dripping down on the 408VAC portion of a power cabinet...yeah, bad things happen. Lights out sorts of bad things. So far we've almost dug out from under it...it's almost 4 AM and I'm just now on my lunch break.
Thursday I get to go have my teeth worked on, there's a possibility of a root canal (oh fun times!) to go along with the crown prep. That means I'll likely be on antibiotics and pain meds, which means...I won't be able to drink anything stronger than iced tea at the NoVaMoMe.

This should never have reached the level where it is being argued across several blogs. Especially when one of the primary participants is someone whose job is to manage such situations. If she is fired it won't be because Levin fans called for it but because she demonstrated incompetence.

If it was nothing to worry about then there would not be a shitstorm around her right now. The joke was in bad taste in response to an already negative comment about a popular figure in conservative talk radio. And she is making it worse by acting like a victim.

In relationship counseling, there may be some strength in acting like a victim in a pure sense -- "You said XXXX, and I felt hurt by that" -- because it avoids the long-running findings-of-fact stage. As a contrary example, you could have: "You said I was a whore." "Well, you slept with my best friend and got him to invest in your crafts store." "You said Neil was a nice guy, and you didn't think we should buy more yarn."
The problem is not that she's acting like a victim: "I'm very hurt that Levin, who I thought was on my side, is treating me this way." The problem is very much that she's acting like an idiot: "I could never have expected, in my role as a New Media Director, that people interacting with New Media might be a bit.....strange and hypercritical."

The tooth is broken (lower left, just in front of the wisdom tooth, and yes I have all four, they grew in straight and no reason to pull them), the break didn't go all the way down to the root but the gum folded over the bottom of the break and there is some question as to whether the nerve is exposed or not. It feels fine right now, but when you pull the gum back...oh my...

She put something out there -- a normal statistical distribution would say that there was a certain percentage that would be hypercritical, more that would be critical, more that would be on-the-fence, some supportive, and some very supportive. Furthermore, she had "poked the bear" and gone where it might reasonably be expected that the distribution might be skewed against her. Then, when reactions came in, she FREAKED OUT.
Levin doesn't matter here. She could have gone up against the Red Cross or the Ku Klux Klan, Mother Teresa or Anton LaVey. Her actions, and her actions alone -- no matter how reprehensible her opponent -- amply demonstrate her incompetence.

Yeah, I'm a little annoyed at the "broken record" thing, myself. I started out as "WTF? Attack a moronette?" and I've been increasingly driven by the "but, but, but, but.....it's Emmanuel Goldstein!!!!" rhetoric into the opposing camp. I keep getting the same shit shoved in my face and -- coming from nothing, I don't know the players -- all I can tell is that it still smells bad.
How many of my posts have included "so?". If you stick to the timeline, there's no "there" there. Some anonymous person tried to do a funny about X. Y retweeted. X retweeted Y and said, "Y's not a fan". The bulk of X's gazillions of listeners sat on their asses. Several got nasty with Y. Y went ballistic.
There are huge disconnects throughout the whole story. I don't know or care if Levin sacrifices children to Moloch every Wednesday....but all the Levin dirt isn't relevant to the supposed Ribali "crime". Fact is, if you don't have a link from A to B, I really don't care.

Levin didn't even necessarily do the retweet. Plenty of people, especially pundits and celebs, have software (or a minion) running that automatically retweets anything that references them, so as to bring it to the attention of the fans. Much of this could have developed without Levin or anyone working for him being aware until it was at full Force 5 tempest in a teacup.
This is pretty run of the mill stuff for Twitter. The only reason we're talking about this and not the numerous other similar dramas playing out on Twitter at any given moment is it involves somebody of interest to a lot of people on this blog. Levin doesn't matter here. She could have gone
up against the Red Cross or the Ku Klux Klan, Mother Teresa or Anton
LaVey. Her actions, and her actions alone -- no matter how reprehensible
her opponent -- amply demonstrate her incompetence.
How can you possibly say that Levin doesn't matter here? He's the one who seized on it opportunistically and promoted to an audience that was bound to react in a hostile manner. Why do you suppose Levin did that? Do you think he just flung it up there casually thinking, "Oh, hey -- this is cute!" Or, do you think he did it because he wanted Ribali fired?
And is that a reasonable reaction to that kind of tweet? To want someone to lose her job because they retweeted something and added a little quip to it for comedic effect? Is that how you would react if someone you work with had said something similar about you?
For God's sake, man. You've achieved a degree of literalism in this matter that prevents you from even seeing when I'm using the term "evil" and referring to "Jim Jones" as an actual accusation as opposed to simply carrying forward terms laid out by somone else on the thread. And yet I'm the one who's being irrational here?
This is someone losing a job over an off-hand remark about a talk radio host who decided to get his pound of flesh. Why the hell should he be exempted from the kind of criticism she's receiving? Just because he's got numbers on his side doesn't mean he's right, or that everyone has to just shut up about it, no matter how much you'd like them to.

(a) Did she have a reasonable expectation of privacy, on Twitter, that this would not get to Levin supporters? (b) did she target this specifically to non-Levin supporters....and would that not be provocative? (c) did she not expect to get some pushback in a general population? SHE intentionally passed on an insult ("he's an elf") to someone who could react randomly.....does it matter how he reacted? Does his state of mind matter at all? HE did not initiate the chain of actions. I don't give a shit if he wanted her dead -- he didn't go looking for her.

I don't think he should be exempted from criticism at all. I just think that criticism of him should be based on him, while criticism of her should be based on her -- and, BTW, criticism of 'ettes should be kept to an absolute minimum.

If you oppose amnesty, then you must support Mark Levin, who also opposes amnesty, and you must oppose FreedomWorks, which supports amnesty.
Therefore, when it comes to elf-gate, it must be agreed upon that Ribali is to blame for insulting a great conservative fighting icon like Mark Levin. The facts may not be interpreted in any other manner. If you dare to interpret the facts in another manner, because the facts may not actually support the agreed-upon conclusion, then that means you support amnesty.

fan" is "I WANT HER FIRED", then the problem is with your confirmation
bias and your grudge with Mark, and not with what Mark actually tweeted.
He's had plenty of time to intervene, and yet he hasn't. He's undoubtedly heard from a lot of people, and yet he's said nothing. So, either he condones her getting fired (which is a mild interpretation), or he wants her fired -- which is a reasonable conclusion to draw when he hasn't said a word about it despite having the means and opportunity, and access to all kinds of people who know her current employment status.

First, I don't accept your premise that Mark Levin is the leader of some mob.
Second, two that immediately spring to mind:
- He is offering his own snarky comeback without attempting to rile up anyone
- He is playing the role of victim against "the establishment", and so he is attempting to elicit sympathy instead of engender anger
Third, I didn't claim he is a "hapless gomer". But look at the facts present IN THIS INSTANCE, please, irrespective of your prior loathing of the man - he said "guess she's not a fan". That in no way implies that he wants her fired.

And it's not a matter of whether or not she would get pushback. To think that the fact that Levin actively promoted the tweet didn't have any impact whatsoever on the response is preposterous. Billions of dollars aren't spent on advertising for no reason at all. It does this thing called "mobilizing". And that's what Levin did -- mobilize his "friends" and "followers" in social media.

How the hell does it begin to matter whether or not he went looking for her? She posted a retweet with an innocuous rejoinder. There are reasonable responses to such things, and there are unreasonable responses. Thin-skinned people respond unreasonably -- and Mark Levin is nothing if not thin-skinned. But to think that he would be so thin-skinned as to allow her to be fired from her job if he has the means and influence of preventing it, and that he would have defenders in doing so -- much less the full-throated advocates who've been calling for her scalp -- ought to be offensive to decent people. You can assume a diffident pose and say, "Ah, well, them's the breaks" and that may make you correct with regard to your fate, but it doesn't make you a damn bit better as a human being.

Again, if this were just about criticism, that would be fine. But this is about consequences -- consequences that Mark Levin could have, should have, and likely did foresee and has actively brought about by promoting it among his fans and sitting on his hands as it plays out. It's all well and good to say that Mark Levin ought to be criticized, but if you're not willing to say he's responsible for having someone unjustly fired out of sheer opportunism when he could have easily intervened to prevent it, it means nothing.

I was the one who originally wrote the code to generate the hash (back in the day of the Gleens, IIRC) to help detect sockpuppets without publicly revealing personal info. It changes when your publicly Internet-routable IP address changes. There is almost always some device nearby upstream of your personal posting-thing-of-choice which translates the private (internal) IP address that your device gets locally into one that the Internet can recognize and route to.
Your ISP will often be the one who ends up handing out a temporary Internet-routable IP address to your cable modem or router when it boots up or is reset, and every device behind that modem/router would therefore generate the same hash. If you pay for it, most ISPs can assign a static IP address for your modem/router which won't change, and in that case, your hash would stay the same no matter how often you rebooted that device.
The code was later edited to allow a custom hash to be mapped to a given public IP address, rather than have it randomly generated, but it can only match up that assignment if your public IP address stays the same. HTH. HAND.
