I'm told, by a reliable and well-placed source, that a good deal of the Democratic opposition to John Cornyn's proposed amendment to the Gang of 8 bill has nothing to do with border security. It has to do with DUIs. Specifically, Cornyn's amendment would bar illegal immigrants with misdemeanor DUI convictions from "probationary" legal status, which is the immediate legalization offered by Marco Rubio, et al, to most of the 11 million undocumented immigrants now living in the U.S. For the pro-amnesty side, the exclusion of DUI offenders is apparently a deal-killer. There must be a lot of them!
Pro-Gang Democrats (and Republicans) understandably don't want to publicize their DUI defense. DUI offenders are not an inherently popular group, and accidents in which undocumented immigrant drivers kill innocent civilians tend to be well publicized. It's not a coincidence that Obama's executive mini-amnesty of so-called "Dreamers"-issued before the 2012 election-claimed to exclude DUI offenders. But the broader Gang of 8 legislation, written after the election, allows two free misdemeanors-apparently including DUIs-before an illegal immigrant is disqualified.
So why would they add this exception? Well to put it bluntly illegal aliens have a giant drinking and driving problem. And by illegal aliens I mean young Mexican males.
Even bien pensant NPR reveals their racist face by acknowledging this uncomfortable fact:
Nationwide, Latinos rank second only to Native Americans and their alcohol death rate on the highway. The extent of the problem varies from state to state, but community leaders say it seems worse in places where Latinos have newly immigrated. At Al Pueblo, a Hispanic advocacy group in North Carolina, safety director Tony Ascion(ph) says Latino drunk drivers tend to be young men in the U.S. without their families, people who have a lot of free time and a lot of what Ascion calls, machismo.
While NPR tries to portray the DUI problem as purely situational, the real issue is that in rural Mexican culture drinking-and-driving doesn't have the same stigma it does here and in fact it's considered part of machismo to always be able to handle your drink. Which means never admitting you're too drunk to jump in your truck and drive home.
The end result is that illegal aliens are responsible for a wildly disproportional number of DUI arrests as well DUI-related crashes, hit-and-runs and fatalities. So much so that a special exception has been added to an already generous amnesty bill to keep widespread DUI arrests from gumming up the illegals' legalization process.
Now given all this you might think that MADD would be protesting the bill's DUI exception since they're supposed to be against drunk drivers. But of course not. Which tells you what kind of organization they've morphed into over the years and where their real priorities lie.
I so very well remember spending a summer in the Soviet Union in 1979 and being amazed at the alternatives used in public bathrooms for TP. It was not uncommon to see Pravda cut into squares for our bathroom use - a fitting repurposing if ever there was one. And I did occasionally encounter wax paper used for toilet paper. Wax paper is not known for its absorbency. I remember writing my husband that no modern country that failed supplying its citizenry with toilet paper was going to win the Cold War. Apparently, I had more insights to the state of Soviet power than our own CIA at the time.
I'd like to see every citizen receive a basic income of AUD$30,000 per year. No exceptions, no means testing. This is why.

I know how and still have all the "cap and rotor" tools; the dwell / tach, the timing light, the vacuum gauges, distributor wrenches, etc.

Just remember an El Al cargo 747, after losing two engines on the same wing along with a good portion of leading edge, still managed to declare a Mayday and fight the plane to stay flying. They still lost the battle but it is an interesting data point to remember when someone tries to peddle an SA-7 with its 1.5Kg warhead or an FIM-92 and its 3Kg warhead could take a 747 down.

This illegal's DWI thing is pretty underreported. Here in Northern CA, no DWI checkpoint is complete without one Mexican guy on each side, about 1/4 mile away, with a cardboard sign warning about the checkpoint. As far as I can tell, they are never hassled. Try that in English and see how you fare with the cops.

My brother died in a flaming car accident. I don't know why it caught on fire. He hit a telephone pole, and it ignited. I was too traumatized from reading the accident report to look into why. Oh, and if you are ever faced with the prospect of having to read an autopsy report of a family member, do yourself a favor and skip it. I read it so my mother wouldn't have to.

Saw a car completely engulfed in flames along side I-5? about six months ago while heading north.... in California ... the car had burned for quite a while cause all paint and markings etc. were gone- no way to tell what make or model but I think it was a Mitzubishi eclipse....
There was not a person around the area at all.... no cops....no FD... no owner standing at the side of the road distraught..... nothing........ this was around 4am...... I just kept on driving north. Fast. Someone will take care of it right?.... right?

In addition to trying to block the puck from getting to your net and avoiding the chance of your goalie dealing with a screened shot, you may be able to deflect the puck in a such a way that you can either get it out of your zone or start a play going the other direction.
Also, if done properly, the goalie can concentrate on the elevated shot.
However, if you go down, you better block that low puck.

And as someone who many days drives 2 or 3 hours between clients, it takes away from billable hours... and keeps clients computers, or even networks, down longer.... thus hurting the economy...

I haven't noticed that with Mexicans. The only part of Mexico with very short people are along the border with Guatemala - Quintana Roo and the rest of the Yucata - Mayan country.
I'v been in Mayan villages in Guatemala. I rmember being in Quetzalcastenango and feeling like an NBA player, even though I'm just 6' tall.

My understanding is that "repos" are overnight repurchase agreements by which many financial firms finance their daily operations. An explosion in the overnight repo rate presaged the demise of Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers, because it meant they couldn't access cash for the next day's operations.
This may be wrong, but is what I took from my study of the financial meltdown here.

Well, not to get to "share-y", but I suddenly developed kidney cancer and got a kidney, and other odds and ends taken out of me last month. It was something else.
Hopefully it was fixed. We'll see..
Drilled a well right after I got out of the hospital a couple of weeks ago about 16 miles south of Belfield and supervised the whole thing while was flat on my back in bed in El Paso. Found a really nice Tyler Sand with 12' of pay, happy to say.

An old friend of mine was hit by an illegal alien without insurance. She thought it might be a DUI, but the guy sped off before police arrived. She has been completely disabled and in shivering-levels of pain for 20 years now.

We're muddling through. It's a drain on finances to pay for 2 places on one income. We occasionally make it to Fargo (nearest Costco in the States). After watching a documentary on TR's time in North Dakota, I may be inspired to take the family to Medora (I've been there; they have not). That is a beautiful park and the musical was also better than I expected at the time. The Pitchfork Fondue was awesome too.

Texas case sound like a lot of others -- some nutter goes around talking shit and soon some undercover FBI guys show up saying, hey, we agree with you, let's do this shit. From that point on the Feds are carefully walking him through the plot, supplying materials, plans, etc, etc. There's a whole group, but all but one is a Fed.

Thanks. No its related to smoking and/or nasty oilfield chemicals. 30-plus years in the oilpatch (since I was 17) probably did it to me, since I've never smoked.
Lots of my old hands have died of bladder cancer. My type of cancer (papillary) is kind of rare and related the bladder kind.
Right after I got out, we went to the Taco Tote (the one you love) right by UTEP and my hospital. I think the one down near Resler and Mesa is better They expanded it..
Love the barbacoa tacos. Good and greasy. The cukes and green guacamole sauce The charro beans and those great corn tortillas!
Brilliant word of advice: don't get cancer.

Handheld battery powered X-ray generators give off ~50Kv and at a couple feet drop below the 2mr/hr a person is allowed to work in 8 hours a day. As one jumps to 320Kv the generator needs 220 volts of electricity minimum and the generator is ~2'X3' and the head won't hide in a jacket. A gamma ray pill dropped in their desk/bedroom might work though.

Ten years ago, if it was after a certain time and depending on the season, I'd take the long way home rather than go on the 126 late at night. Nearly every incident I ever saw reported involved a truck full of drunken farm workers. It isn't as scary now but I still wouldn't be on it late at night without good reason.

My daughter Leah eas in the intensive care twice at Las Palmas whern she was a baby. They have a great children's section. I wheeled her around in a little cart to play in the play area. It's a very nice hospital.
She was born at Thomason, the county hospital where all the drug murders are.

I remember those Capris. Cool little cars. Well, with the nature of an EMP attack being what it is, there are no guarantees. What you could do is keep a spare ignition module, coil, and pickup coil is a secure metal strongbox that was designed to be an effective Faraday cage. Should the EMP render your ride inoperative, a few minutes' work would see all the damaged parts replaced.
Or get an older Diesel Suburban.

Since provisional legal status lasts ten years for most of these people before they become permanent residents, DUI convictions will apply to an increasing number of them as the ten year provisional period drags on. If the system was honest (which it ain't) I could easily imagine it denying LPR status to 10% or so of illegal immigrants, mostly men, many with children.
I was once in the jury selection pool for a Hispanic man who couldn't speak English who was charged with a DUI. I knew why he was contesting it - not because he wanted to avoid a DUI on his record, nor because he was innocent, but because it would've possibly meant deportation.

I was concerned, since so many anchor babies are born there. Some of the mothers I met in maternity wre in the 15-16 year old range. TB exposure is endemic in the staff.

I occasionally stick my nose in at various lefty blogs. At one of them (this was a couple of years ago) the proprietor was referring to the "myth" of illegal-alien drunk driving.
I responded with a long, long list of impeccable factual sources on the illegal-alien DUI problem. Arrest statistics from the Department of Justice. Hospitalization numbers from the NIH. Loss figures from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
To include, as the _piece de resistance_, an open admission by the National Council of La Raza that DUI was "the biggest single public health issue" in their community.
What was the response? "You're a racist."
I've come to figure that when I hear that particular panicked knee-jerk response from lefties, what it means it that my analysis is absolutely correct.
The problem is very real. Especially so here in Commiefornia. There are friends of mine who I now will not go see at their homes at night, because getting from my place to theirs involves transiting certain highways that I know are going to be full of wasted Mexicans in big old beater cars, weaving back and forth over the center line. And it's just not worth my life to go out there.

I came to this point after my second divorce (well maybe it was the reason for them). I like to talk and seem to be well liked in the small bars and the people in town but have little interest in anyone I meet since I don't want the control of my solitude broken.

643 Every day I read stuff like this DUI story and I am glad I moved away from DC. My neighborhood was right next to a slum full of illegals. One of them hit me when my two kids were in the car. Cop was bilingual, driver had no insurance and spoke no English. Cop warned me that I might get sued because he hit the steering wheel pretty hard and said he wanted to go to the hospital. But I never heard anything. I figured he was either drunk (this happened right after church on a Sunday) or just feared being deported. Did $2000 damage to my car. I've read about some gruesome drunk-driving deaths in the DC area since I left.
Where I live now, the illegals have not shown up. It was such a revelation when we moved here and hired painters, electricians, and flooring people and they were all white and spoke English. Even the McDonald's here still hires high school kids. I feel like I am living in the last bastion of what used to be America.
I now denounce myself for being racist.

He DID have that head injury back 2006 during a bike ride along the Pacific Palisades.....and was never the same after....shocked was I at my banning shortly after this incident....so I am only tying in the incident to the sudden change of political direction....that is all I had at the time....sad indeed, prior to his "incident" almost "Pre-Brietbart" he was in his assault on the Left....so that makes his switch-over even more of a shock....

I always figured it was a stroke. He had a rockin' libertarian/right-wing blog....then, out of nowhere, he was a statist paranoid.....but a head injury works, too. And he's been so horrible to people! Well, not from Laos, but I have plenty from Thailand. I remember before my sister was born (me, 10/20/67, her 9/25/70) and I remember when my younger brother was an infant (him, 5/16/69) so I do have some pretty early memories. My dad would take me to the fancy Dusit Thani hotel for a haircut and 7 Up. Family and parents' friends would stay there when they visited so we'd go over for dinner and occasionally spend the night -- I remember once we had room service (my first room service) and it was those ubiquitous round trays (in this case of chow mein and kao pad); and I recall one morning at a large round breakfast table eating sugar cubes. Lots of downpours too. We lived in a sort of international diplomat enclave (not fenced in, it was Soy 14) -- lots of foreigners including Japanese and a Dutch family with a kid named Philip. My parents taught me to read before I could speak so that may be one reason my memory is so good.

The whole southeast Asia thing is so much obscured by outside influences. There are thousands of years of history embedded into the region, but everything has been run over by colonialists and 19th-century German hack economic philosophy. It's hard to appreciate the depth and breadth of a culture when Pol Pot comes in and clusterfucks 1/4 of his population to death in 3 years. Orwell was in Myanmar, and it forms more of 1984 than most people know. The French totally screwed the pooch in Vietnam, and not even the Americans that won WWI and WWII could unscrew it....but underneath all this, there is an immense world of incredible beauty and complexity.

A woman in our fish club moved back to Missouri with her dad. She made it to a club meeting before the big move but after a scouting trip, and described -- with horror -- how a Missouri town had a "Chinese" restaurant....that served Chun-king dinners as restaurant food.

Thing is, I'm kind of a redemption sap -- I'd like to believe the best about people (no matter how much I despise the person that the best belongs to)....and that they could overcome adversity and get better. It helps greatly when you add flavorings -- pepper, oregano, basil....but that right there is a bit of a tip-off. Flavorings are not just flavoring -- many also have medicinal properties.

Part of what makes Bar-Shu so kewl.....and, I suspect, illegal in the US.....is its reliance on Szechuan pepper. In goodly quantities, it tastes vaguely like lemon-lime; it reacts spicily, like a pepper; and physically, it makes your tongue actually go numb [it still tastes].

Then some stupid bastard Canadian company went and offered a really nice Fractal Design case for $12. They're Canadian but have a will call site in City of Industry. So I guess it will really cost me a whole $20 after I factor in gas.

There is a lot of overconfidence there. I recently severely flustered a Linux fanboy who couldn't come up with answers for some of my questions about how he could truly be sure of what was there as opposed to what was supposed to be there. Unless you've examined the code in every last file, you just cannot be sure. Then there is the matter of the compiler. There are all sorts of hijinks that could be done with tricking people into using a 'customized' compiler that does one thing while reporting another.
Convincing whole nations to run a distro that is provided by an NSA front company would be a spook dream come true.
