Steven Pinker on the Tragic Vision vs. the Utopian Vision

They are the different visions of human nature that underlie left-wing and right-wing ideologies. The distinction comes from the economist Thomas Sowell in his wonderful book "A Conflict of Visions." According to the Tragic Vision, humans are inherently limited in virtue, wisdom, and knowledge, and social arrangements must acknowledge those limits. According to the Utopian vision, these limits are products of our social arrangements, and we should strive to overcome them in a better society of the future.

Out of this distinction come many right-left contrasts that would otherwise have no common denominator. Rightists tend to like tradition (because human nature does not change), small government (because no leader is wise enough to plan society), a strong police and military (because people will always be tempted by crime and conquest), and free markets (because they convert individual selfishness into collective wealth). Leftists believe that these positions are defeatist and cynical, because if we change parenting, education, the media, and social expectations, people could become wiser, nicer, and more peaceable and generous.

Fatherhood and Black Widows

Having been fighting an infestation of black widows in my garage I've read up on them and it turns out that they're actually not the patricidal maniacs they're made out to be. But in general it sucks to be a male spider.

And a female one too if you're in my garage.

"Though most bird fathers help care for their offspring, absentee dads are the rule in 90 percent of mammal species. Fatherly care is even less common in other animal groups." The females are also larger and sometimes they kill their mates after copulation, as we all know with the black widow. But she also mentions the common yellow garden spider: "If [the males] do succeed in finding a female and mating with her, they invariably die in the process. Their copulatory organs are single-use devices and almost always break off in the female's reproductive tract, where their lifeless bodies are left to hang."

RIP Jack Vance

Sadly one of my favorite science fiction authors died last month at 96. He lived a full happy life and managed to keep writing for decades even after losing his sight. His career spanned the 40s through almost the 21st century and he influenced many other authors - George RR Martin is a particular fan of his. He also heavily influenced Gary Gygax when he was developing D&D and its magic system was based off of Vance's stories.

His writing is unique with a mix of witty dialog, clever wording, unusual characters and pure imagination. To get a taste of his style check out his short stories Sail 25 and The Moon Moth. I particularly like Sail 25 because he takes what could have been a cookie cutter kind of story based on a already-drawn illustration and makes something unique and memorable out of it.

And that's just as well. Just the synopsis of The Day the Clown Cried is enough to depress you.

Others on the list are Attorney General Eric Holder, Comcast, Facebook, Google Play, LodgeNet, Hilton Hotels, Twitter, the American Library Association, Wikipedia, Cosmopolitan magazine, and Barnes & Noble.
Holder tops the list because he "refuses to enforce existing federal obscenity laws against hardcore adult pornography."

Wait I think they left off Skinemax, paper, newsprint, telephones, sculpture, and cave art.

Ancient Roman Concrete Secret Discovered

Actually the technique to make concrete was lost during the dark ages and only rediscovered during the Renaissance. But modern concrete has never been as durable as the Roman kind.

"The Romans made concrete by mixing lime and volcanic rock. For underwater structures, lime and volcanic ash were mixed to form mortar, and this mortar and volcanic tuff were packed into wooden forms. The seawater instantly triggered a hot chemical reaction. The lime was hydrated -- incorporating water molecules into its structure -- and reacted with the ash to cement the whole mixture together."

The Portland cement formula crucially lacks the lyme and volcanic ash mixture. As a result, it doesn't bind quite as well when compared with the Roman concrete, researchers found. It is this inferior binding property that explains why structures made of Portland cement tend to weaken and crack after a few decades of use, Jackson says.

So How Much Does the Average Wedding Cost?

Well the Wedding-Industrial Complex would tell you it was $28K last year. But that's highly misleading - for most couples it will be substantially less.

Half of couples spend less than the median and half spend more.

When I pressed TheKnot.com on why they don't just publish both figures, they told me they didn't want to confuse people. To their credit, they did disclose the figure to me when I asked, but this number gets very little attention. Are you ready? In 2012, when the average wedding cost was $27,427, the median was $18,086. In 2011, when the average was $27,021, the median was $16,886. In Manhattan, where the widely reported average is $76,687, the median is $55,104. And in Alaska, where the average is $15,504, the median is a mere $8,440. In all cases, the proportion of couples who spent the "average" or more was actually a minority. And remember, we're still talking only about the subset of couples who sign up for wedding websites and respond to their online surveys. The actual median is probably even lower.

40 Modern concrete also doesn't last as long because we use steel reinforcement. That's EXCELLENT for dealing with sideways stress (earthquakes, eek) but the steel rusts. When it rusts, it expands 6 times it's size and cracks the concrete. So modern buildings resists earthquakes well but will crumble over periods of 50-200 years.

I'm not sure what a better one is, but "tragic" indicates no improvement or progress at all, and I don't think Conservatives believe that. The only exception was this otherwise very crappy pop history book on medieval siege warfare that happened to contain a Renaissance-era recipe. And since we're speaking of marriages, we almost considered getting married in OK because they don't have a 72-hour waiting period between license and ceremony like Texas. We eventually did it in Deming, NM, to make it easier for my MIL/witness to make it. (This was for the civil marriage Mexico requires before you can have the church wedding.)

I wonder what the correlation rate is between people who spend > $20K on a wedding, and people who get divorced. Nobody in either family had any input. We decided everything in about two hours. Food, flowers, etc.

I actually enjoyed myself.

197 I did my daughter's entire wedding for $10,000. 5 bridesmaids and groomsmen. Flowers from the best florist. Catered evening reception at the Allison mansion, with a gorgeous and tasty buffet. 5-tier wedding cake. Beautiful gown. Wine and beer bar (free to guests) with cash bar forservice. Disk jockey for dancing. Harpist for music.

The secret was that the wedding was in late February, when no major events are going on, so we got good deals on everything from the wedding dress to the catering.

We could have done it cheaper, but the flip side is when you have an event in late February, nothing is going on, so everyone shows up! So our catering bill was a lot higher than it should have been.

Also, if you do not specify dress in your invitations, people will show up in jeansandflip flops, even if it is an evening wedding with a dinner!

Almost everybody at least has beer and wine and allows restaurants to sell liquor (yes, they can sell it to you by the bottle usually, it's just more expensive than the liquor store). Seymour Hersh's "The Darker Side of Camelot" is a difficult read in part because Hersh is such a poor writer, and in part it is hard to believe we (well, our parents and such) elected such a superficial and nasty incompetent.

We have been burdened with bad government for a lot of the 20th Century, it's just the Media of any particular era was never into telling us a lot of the truth. With blogs and the internet, it's a lot harder to hide truth from the people, if you can bear to read how stupid our government actually is.

If you have realistic expectations of what the box should do, it can be pretty affordable. A good cheap HTPC is not going to be a strong gaming system.

You can build a little HTPC fairly cheap using the AMD APUs. Rather than putting a tuner board in the PC, check out the network tuners with cable card support from SiliconDust or Ceton. One tuner box will talk to every system on your home network.

Another thing to look at is a good NAS box rather than having the drives in any one PC that has to be on and awake all the time. Good 2-bay boxes with DLNA certification are under $100 now.

I cannot recommend this product enough.

Vows are sacred bonds, but bonds are not enough to make a strong marriage. Recognizing that each day is a choice to stay together and celebrating that choice after decades together is a nice thing. The books usually are better because you get more detail. On the other hand, books like GoT or Atlas Shrugged are better on film because you can cut out all the extra bullshit. It depends a lot on the screenwriter.

I finally INSISTED that the pink gown be tossed. I had car waxing rags that looked better. So she threw it in the trash. Two days later I discovered she had fished it out of the trash, and wore it again.

Inside that box was a soaking wet destroyed box, with a flap cut into it and some random bags of ready to assemble desk parts thrown in. I don't know if the UPS plane crashed or what, but thats what it looked like. The managed switch was soaking wet, so I called newegg and they sent another one no questions asked. What the Romans made is known as "pozzolan cement", compared with what we now use, "Portland cement". In each case, the end result is hydrated calcium silicate, which crystallizes and binds the mix together. The nice thing about Portland cement is that because it is a manufactured product, the results it gives are very predictable. Because pozzolan cement depends upon volcanic ash, which varies a great deal in quality, it is not readily adapted to modern industrial use. One would have to develop an art of using the ash from a particular deposit in order to make quality cement. Perhaps we are seeing some survivorship bias here. We only get to see the best Roman cement. The rest has long since washed away.

The money that paid for my college came from a series of houses that my dad half-built, we moved into, finished, and moved out of. I'm pretty familiar with SoCal building -- my cousin owns a plumbing shop.

But there aren't any basements in SoCal, so I'm really perplexed at how they work. There are too many weird analogies -- I know about swimming pools that have popped out of the ground when the water level rose, for instance. I suspect it has a lot to do with freezing (something else that is foreign), as in: "perhaps these people do basements so they can keep their plumbing runs from freezing -- and, since there's this space, they use it."

Which I don't get, at all. Out here, we have a couple of possibilities -- "slab" foundations -- where you build a short wall, fill it with dirt, and pour concrete over the top to be a floor; or "pier and perimeter" foundations, where there's a short wall around the outside of the house, then little concrete plugs in the middle, with a wooden webwork spanning between to hold up the floor. underneath, there's a "crawlspace" that is very rarely visited and is ventilated to the outside. You can readily assume that crawlspaces don't freeze, unless Mammoth Al Gore is in the middle of a speech.

cthulhu, every Midwestern house built before 1970 or so is going to have a basement, but they are sometimes called "storm cellars" cause that's where you hide out when the tornadoes come. My parents basement is a 10x10 room that is barely big enough for the central air unit and water heater. I've noticed that basements aren't really prevalent anywhere else in the country.

That makes sense. Split levels are also big in the Midwest, generally speaking you either have a basement or you have a split level (or you live in a tornado magnet).

Very rare in the southeast and mid-atlantic, but then again in Florida your basement will very likely end up as an inground pool due to the water table being so close to the surface. The frost-line explanation covers it pretty well.

Not a usable basement per se, but it did help prevent flooding and had a cool place for the dog to sleep and store some yard tools and such. We lived very close to what was left of a swamp so serious summer rains were an issue. Better drainage these days ...

It would appear that our water service comes to our house about 2' below grade -- then it rises next to the OUTSIDE of our perimeter foundation wall and enters our house a few inches under the floor and about a foot above grade. This would clearly be a problem if we had serious freezes.

607 Part of what's so weird is that there's this whole paradigm -- you have an insulated rectangular box, where walls, floors, and attics have fiberglass and you've sealed off air movement in wall plates and ducts.....and, then, you have an attic and crawlspace that are totally vented to the outside but keep the rain off. It all breaks down when attics and crawlspaces freeze, of course.

there is more to it than that. attics are vented in cold regions so the snow on the roof won't melt and cause problems. where the attics are heated, there are normally vents between the rafters so that the deck of the roof can be cold. sometimes the goal is just to keep a surface from having too much temperature differential between the hot side and cold side because it causes expansion/contraction problems in some materials.

crawl spaces are normally vented to prevent mold.
