So How Did Snowden Get a Top Secret Clearance?
The old fashioned way: Via incompetence, laziness, disorganization, and slipshod work.
- 87 percent of background checks are never fully completed. OPM (Office of Personnel Management) uses the information it has to make a judgment on whether to approve these checks.
- There are no uniform guidelines across the government for different levels of clearance. This means that top-secret clearance at one agency means something completely different at another.
- Within each agency, there are no strict guidelines for determining security clearance.
- USIS, a private contractor, conducts 65 percent of all U.S. government background checks.
- USIS, which conducted a background check on Snowden, is now under investigation by OPM's IG for failing to conduct proper background checks.
- OPM has already paid USIS $200 million this year.
- The $1-billion-dollar fund that OPM uses to pay for background checks has never been audited.
- Eighteen OPM investigators have been convicted of falsifying information contained in investigations they've conducted. Eleven work for OPM, while the other seven work for private contractors.
It's a wonder there aren't dozens of Edward Snowdens running around.
Why Armed Robbery in a CCW State is a Bad Idea
Because this happens.
A man trying to rob Atlanta customers waiting to buy the latest LeBron James sneakers was killed by a shopper who continued to wait on line after the shooting, according to NBC News. The robber, a man who has not been identified yet, sauntered up to people before dawn in Atlanta, waiting in line to purchase the $180 Lebon X Denim kicks by Nike on the day they were released, CNN reported. The shoes, endorsed by the star forward on the Miami Heat, could be sold for a much higher price on eBay.
Witnesses said the thief pulled out a gun and tried to rob the crowd.
These are not worth your life. And your life certainty ain't worth losing a place in line either.
The Triumph of San Francisco Over the Golden State
There was a time when California truly was the Golden State and the residents and mores of San Francisco were viewed as oddball curiosities that were good for entertainment but ultimately harmless. Then the inmates took over the asylum.
Back in 1968 - the year in which this season's Mad Men takes place - what you wrote about the Golden State was mostly true. As a born-and-bred native now in his sixties, I can attest that - earthquakes aside - California was the place to live, the dynamic and confident state that you describe.Key word: "Was." Past tense. Today, it is a wreck. Ronald Reagan would get about 25 percent of the vote. Governor Pete Wilson - I think the only Republican to ever beat Jerry Brown and who ably guided the state to surpluses and was a moderate on social issues - couldn't get elected to any major state office.
The once-derided San Francisco values have become California values. The Bay Area completely controls its politics. Every major state-wide office holder comes from S.F.: Governor Jerry Brown was born and bred here. Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom was, until recently, the Mayor of S.F. The very leftwing attorney general Kamala Harris (who we will make national when her turn arrives) was its very progressive district attorney. Both Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein hail from S.F. And while not a statewide office, we (I live in the Bay Area) brought the country Nancy Pelosi.
As a result, California is in danger of implosion.
George Orwell:
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
The New York Times:
Four blockbuster cases before the Supreme Court highlight the tension between formal equality and a more dynamic kind of equality that takes account of historical injustices.
And I'm thinking their asses could use a little dynamic equalization.
Conservative Political Analysts Wanted
Evolving Strategies is looking for a few good political analyst types.
Evolving Strategies is a political communications research firm specializing in randomized controlled experiments in the "lab" and in the "field." ES is bringing a scientific revolution to free-market/conservative politics. We are looking for people who are obsessive about getting things right and creative in their work. A ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the academic literature in their field, highly developed skills, a commitment to academic rigor, but an intuitive understanding of practical political concerns and objectives as well.
We're looking for new talent to help with our fast-growing portfolio in these areas:
High-level data processing, statistical analysis and modeling
Experimental design and executionHelpful skills and experience include:
Please send all questions and relevant materials to: info@evolving-strategies.com
Experience designing and implementing social science experiments, online "lab" and "field."
Extensive experience in statistical analysis and mastery of statistics software (R, Stata, etc.).
Extensive experience analyzing experimental and/or large datasets.
Extensive knowledge of academic research on political behavior/psychology.
Experience with or serious interest and knowledge of practical political activities; campaigns, issue-advocacy, etc.
Advanced degree (M.A., M.S., or Ph.D) in quantitative social sciences is preferred but not required with sufficient demonstration of skill and experience.
Never worked for the Romney or McCain campaigns or their insanely paid analytics staff - unless you still have direct access and are willing to share.
I may have extrapolated a little bit in the requirements but I'm pretty sure that's what they're thinking.

What kind of decadent society would have these just hanging out in public?
How We Knew It Was You: "DNA Fog"
Soon crime scenes tag you.
Applied DNA Sciences (ADNAS) has developed a new approach to solve crimes using DNA tagging. The difference is that instead of tagging the objects being stolen, they tag the pilferer with DNA. While this has been tried before by applying the DNA to a fleeing criminal with a gun, ADNAS has adopted a more subtle approach....DNA Fog is an airborne suspension of artificial DNA molecules with a known but biologically inert sequence. The DNA molecules (Applied DNA's SigNature DNA) are artificially constructed, so that a strand of DNA with 20 base pairs can have over a trillion unique combinations. A security system could use one sequence per location, one sequence for each area within the location, or even use RFID tags to instruct a sophisticated spraying device to spray a unique DNA signature for each item stolen.
Once released, DNA molecules attach onto a malefactor's clothing, shoes, hair, and skin, as well as the objects stolen. This is rather like putting exploding dye packs in bags of money, save that the perpetrator has no idea that he has been marked.
It is surprisingly hard to scrub all the DNA off of one's body, clothing, shoes and tools.
"The designer shoe industry, to some extent, relies on the willful suspension of rational thinking."
Reflections on a shoe sale in New York.
In one room of the sprawling, glittering, intoxicating Shangri-La of shoes that begins at the top of the escalator on the second floor, were the smaller sizes: Manolo Blahnik pumps made of shiny turquoise patent leather ($322, down from $645); piles of citron and mint Lanvin leather ballerina flats ($247, from $495); and surreal pink pumps covered in blue crystals from Giuseppi Zanotti ($1,097, from $2,195). In another room were similarly decadent displays in larger sizes, beckoning from the racks like abandoned puppies."You know the way that men lose their minds when they look at cars?" Ms. Charnin Morrison said. "It was the same thing. You had every major brand on sale. Everybody lost their minds. The prices are insane, and yet I could tell you a million reasons why they are justified."
The designer shoe industry, to some extent, relies on the willful suspension of rational thinking, the giving over to a more primal urge (to shop, that is) in order to move merchandise that common sense would suggest is patently, obscenely, even self-destructively overpriced.

the real fun part of California is how few people really run the State...
Take... drilling offshore... Most Californians never make it to the beach... yet the rich assholes who live there can somehow stop drilling even though we could Tax the shit out of it...
This State is insane...

You can't. The entire industry of "women's" shoes is predicated on the myth that women must be made to look helpless in order to be attractive. It is a self-fulfilling dealio when the women end up literally hobbled by their foot gear. The only practical use for a stiletto heel is to use it as a literal stiletto.

It's a tough thing to do for someone you love. Probably harder on those who remain than those who move on. God bless.

Not much helps, except the Thundershirt and being shut in an interior bathroom for the duration. Otherwise, he shakes, drools and tries to climb inside my shirt. There's a lesson here for those who are paying attention, and it's not a lesson in criminal justice or CCW. It's a lesson in economics.
The photographs accompanying the article about the shooting in the shoe queue in Atlanta will show you, unsurprisingly given the locale and the merchandise, that the patrons are overwhelmingly black.
I went looking for the figures on what food stamp usage is among blacks in Atlanta. It turns out to be difficult to dig those figures up. It's almost as though someone does not want that information to be easily accessible to the public.
However, I was able to determine that as of 2009, a whopping 30% of black residents of Fulton County, which includes the majority of metro Atlanta, were on food stamps. (Actually found that out courtesy of the _New York Times_.)
Current figures? Not available. However, nationally, food stamp usage went up more than 41% from 2009 to 2012. Applying that multiplier, it's not at all implausible to guess that more than four in ten Atlanta blacks are on food stamps today in 2013.
And here they are. Queuing up to buy $180 _pairs of sneakers_.
You have to wonder how many "free" Obamaphones were in the pockets of those waiting in line for those $180 pairs of sneakers. And how many of them went home afterwards to subsidized housing. And discounted electric service. And free health care. While toting $180 pairs of sneakers.
Welcome to Obamerica.

I miss the Cold War.
I , remember growing up in HB, CA. Quite dead end street, played smear the queet, kill the guy with the ball, etc. One day in the late 60's or very early 70's there was a knock on the door. Little bro and I raced to answer the door. 2 guys, black suits, and black ties with the sunglasess asked for a parent. We settled right down. Turns out a neighbor/friend of mom and dads down the street had applied at the FBI. Boy, did we straighten up our shit. They must have come 2 or 3 times to ask questions. I believe he retired from the FBI and spent many a weekend on the boat with dad and his buddies from the hood.

I haven't paid that much attention to Snowden; I'm more focused on how the US fucking government is spying on everyone, not the guy who exposed them.
So sincere question here, why was it criminal to clear Snowden? Had he done anything criminal up to the time he was cleared? Otherwise I assume the people doing the clearing (no matter how competent or incompetent) can not be held responsible for what Snowden did afterwards.
Unless the inability to read minds is a crime now. Since thought crimes are punishable now (see IRS), maybe it is. It's hard to keep up with what new fresh hell Potus, Congress and Scotus wreak over us each day.

A lot of planets seem to have aligned for a guys with such a thin resume...
Obviously Greenwald has been under close observation given what he's been writing about the past few years. Its hard to believe that his contact with Snowden wasn't noticed.

In college, I drank Seagram's VO and ginger. Everyone else drank vodka, rum, or tequila. Now, I still like the occasional VO, but with water or soda. The most important IMO thing you can do for yourself as you get older (i.e., hit 40) is watch what you eat/drink.

Pay attention to what crap they are being taught that is wrong and show them the truth/facts. It becomes a learning lesson and cuts the fuck out of their trust in their teachers. Be subtle just like you would with an ex wife/ex husband let them learn the truth don't force it and it will stick more than just bitching to them.

Not give a shit (as in, I sent an email to a partner at a major law firm, cc'd to his associate, his secretary, and my boss, ending with "I'm not interested in anymore of your bullshit."), but eat well too.
My boss *can't* fire me. Not in the sense of legally, but I'm half responsible for his success as an attorney and he knows it. OTOH, I was supposed to semi-retire this year but my hours recently have been about 85% of normal. This makes it very difficult to finish writing the lyrics and arranging the music for my debut album.

Yep. I learned that the hard way in 3rd grade when my teacher told me to go home and root through my mom's purse to find her cigarettes, then tell her that she'd die if she didn't stop.
I went home and told my mom what the teacher said, instead. It was years before I actually found out what the word "c**t" meant. The teacher, on the other hand, she was quite sure what it meant.

Down to your left foot from where? From mid-calf I would not freak out. From the knee, time to see a doc. From above the knee? Get the humane killer. Have you been on a plane recently? Beware deep vein thrombosis.
"I"m supposed to practically kill my stomach and liver with Tylenol and Motrin, alternating high doses every three hours."
I lost the Tylenol/acetaminophen habit a long time back. That is nasty stuff. Triple nasty with ethanol in your bloodstream.
With regard to the bizarre circus of the medical system, I had a situation recently where someone was sick outside doctors' hours, and I thought, "Oh fuck, the ER," which where I live literally means going through a metal detector, because the DREAM Act types like to barge into the emergency room bristling with weapons to try to off their gangbanger rivals right there on the gurney.
Instead, a quick phone call and all was promptly sorted.
I said, "What the fuck was that?"
Response? Concierge medicine. He gives his doctor an annual retainer. She in turn returns calls. Including calls outside office hours. She makes money. He gets prompt medical advice. Capitalism!
He said, "I pay her $1500 a year. I cancelled cable to pay for it. I gave up a couple of other expensive habits. And it is worth every penny. Especially just pricing my time. Six hours of a weekend in a shitty ER? No way, Ray."
Did you know that an adult internist can and will see pediatric cases? They can. They do. There are some things a kid will get that a non-pediatrician won't catch, but a lot of routine stuff is perfectly okay.

Ibuprofen is safe as houses compared to Tylenol. Tylenol is the #1 and #2 cause of acute liver failure in the US and UK (forget which is which, but....) -- it's particularly bad with alcohol and it's found in so many products that it's easy to double up.
Turns out it has the lowest gap between "effective dose" and LD-50 (dose at which 50% fatalities) of any over-the-counter drug. I try to keep it completely out of the house.

I am torn between laughter and simply astonishment. The intellectual vapidity leaves me speechless. ._. The individual in question goes on to cite their Catholic faith upon being challenged on this point, which happens in roughly half the abortion arguments I enter into... don't quite know what to say when that happens.
If you have to insert a "Well, I'm a practicing Catholic, but..." you've got a blood-stained gap in your reasoning that is not only highly visible, but damned unsightly. -_- Goodness, but this is what is generated from our schools these days...

Indeed they do. Their condemnation will be greater for it.
Would not want to be one of them come Judgement Day. Even if they repent then and there, and not a moment before seeing the face of God, I'd forgive them, I think, provided that God Almighty accepted it - but I cannot imagine a more terrifying situation to be in than staring at God Himself and racking your mind for increasingly feeble excuses for all the bloodshed you endorsed with heart and soul.

There's a book called Jennifer Government that starts this way. People die for the latest sneaker.
Only in the commie author's twisted mind, it was Nike that set the whole murder up as a marketing stunt.

Blood-stained gaps in one's reasoning? Near as I can figure based on real-world examples, the Church is fine with those.
If the Church were not fine with those blood-stained gaps, you have to figure that the Church would start to make a high-profile public thing out of excommunicating those Church members who have such a gap.
As a non-Catholic observing the Church from the outside, I see no such thing. As far as I can tell, it's perfectly okay with the Church hierarchy to be a Catholic and to uphold the most lethal, bloody, murderous late-term abortion measures imaginable, and not ever have any repercussions ensue. Because they don't. The repercussions, I mean.
Hysterical left-wing acquaintances of mine used to rant about Opus Dei as being a "covert right-wing organization". I said, "Opus Dei? That bunch? Aye.
I mentioned it in a thread about a week back, in which Drew M. had been talking about how illegal immigrants do not appreciate the greatness of this country, of what it stands for, of its principles...
...and I cannot help but note that most of our own populace does not, either. Entirely aside from the osmosis going on at the border, putting that matter entirely aside - our own citizens do not understand what made America great. Rather than "Truth, Justice, and the American Way", it's "Eat, Drink, for Tomorrow we Die". There is very little honor remaining in our people... what is left is increasingly focused in a small minority of the populace, while the remainder of the nation spirals away into unthinking debauchery and self-interest.
We are not great any longer. We are little better than the rest of the world, riding on blessing and wealth left to us by preceding generations, and the mercy of God Almighty.
This will be a very dark Fourth of July, I think. I have not enjoyed the Fourth for some years now... actually beginning to dread it, really, and the realization of that dread breaks my damn heart.

With regards to the potentates within the Church, I have to agree with this sentiment, based solely on the actions taken against these evil men and women - that is, no action at all.
I cannot understand that inaction. The only logical conclusion is that it really is not that big a deal to the powers that be in the Church. Why else the hesitancy to act?
I would very much like to be wrong. Perhaps Pope Francis will make changes in this regard.

Islam is a weird, weird, religion.
---------------
Not really. It's like the old stories I used to hear in Sunday School about Judaism and all of the things that were proscribed in the time of the New Testament. Except that instead of prohibitions (i.e. "you can only walk so far on the Sabbath", "You can't heal someone on the Sabbath", etc...), what we're seeing here are overly legalistic readings of whatever Islam calls commandments in order to allow acts that clearly violate what we would refer to as the spirit of the law.
i.e. Prostitution is clearly prohibited. But if you were to marry a woman for just an hour or two and have sex with her, then "obviously" nothing is wrong. Its not right to execute virgins, but raping them before the execution "obviously" makes it okay. All of the fatwas that keep turning up in the news more or less devolve down to Islamic religious "authorities" finding weasel loop-holes that through some technicality don't break the letter of the law even though they make a complete mockery of the spirit of the law.

Being that there is an outstanding obvious lack in those choices.....and, on further reflection, two more possibilities.....I'm suspecting that the chart isn't all that helpful.
The most obvious omission is that cons would win through procedural issues. Oddly enough, such would be my initial guess for an outcome. For those not familiar with this travesty, the State of CA has had the following clusterfark: 1. Attempt to pass gay marriage in the legislature -- failed. 2. Court case to establish gay marriage -- passed. 3. Amendment to State Constitution to overturn #2 -- passed. 4. Legal challenge to #3 based on #2 -- passed. Legal challenge to #4 punted by CA officials sworn to uphold the will of the people (see #3) and brought before SCOTUS by someone else -- this decision.
In short, the judiciary has shoved gay marriage through, against the will of the people and the legislature, and the executive is aiding and abetting. We're really getting a huge case in separation-of-powers disguised as a hugely passionate and political case of gay marriage.
Regardless of how one might feel about government involvement in marriage (I'm agin' it) or the rights of gays (same rights as anyone else, I figger), the whole "we can get ONE court to say X and the executive can CRAM THAT BITCH EVERYWHERE" theory is extremely dangerous.
So, my initial take was that Prop 8 would be sustained through procedural means, just to avoid the thumb-in-the-eye to legislatures and citizens.....but looking at the other "split the baby" decisions being handed down, I've changed my mind. I now suspect that we're going to get a "nobody wins, but it gets new [rigged] guidelines and starts from scratch" decision. Heaven [or Hell] knows what ridiculous gyrations will be involved -- for example, if an executive declines to defend (or defends incompetently) a law duly enacted, might substitute defenders have to sue the executive to take on the power to defend the law? But I'm fairly confident that there will be some flummery that doesn't step on too many toes....but leads to a rigged rematch.

In both cases, you have interested parties -- at Enron, shareholders; for the US, citizens. They're supposed to have representatives empowered to serve their interests -- at Enron, a Board of Directors; in the US, the legislature. There is a group of people empowered to act for the good of the whole -- at Enron, "management"; in the US, the "executive branch".....but they're being evaluated based on short-term information ginned up by their own minions -- at Enron, "Financial Statements"; at the US, "GDP projections, Unemployment rates, Consumer Confidence numbers, etc."
And in both cases, there has been a failure of the stakeholders' representatives to adequately serve their interests. In both cases, the doers have run rings around the representatives. In both cases, cronyism and self-serving have wasted stakeholders' assets and put the enterprise at risk.

And both of them are testament against a far-reaching Statism that crams down against innovators in favor of The Powers That Be. Sadly, however, their corporate heirs are not so inspiring.

Let's face it. We're fucked. There is a reason that DOMA and Prop 8 are last. Its so they can fuck us over and go running away like cowards like they did with Obamacare. Kennedy rules based on which side of the bed he wakes up on. And Roberts has shown that he could join Cirque de Soleil with the way he is willing to twist himself into a pretzel to come to a decision.
They strike down DOMA due to federalism. Then they will kill federalism by deciding that gay marriage is a civil right and thus all bans of it by the states are nullified.

Ain't that ever the truth. Those are one of the ugliest pair of shoes I've ever seen.
"Both Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein hail from S.F. And while not a statewide office, we (I live in the Bay Area) brought the country Nancy Pelosi."
Only Feinstein is a San Francisco product. The other two repulsive hags, Boxer and Pelosi, are carpetbaggers.

Relax for now,
Things will play out with SCOTUS as per-planned.
After that, all bets are off and the REAL will begin to expand.
Like the "Bulging Dome atop Mt. St. Helens with people seeing what needs to be done and slowly working towards the taking back of this country and if need be...............

I still have some naive belief that there are some crafty people on SCOTUS: It looks like Roberts may have been NSA'd on Obamacare.....but still snuck in a poisoned chalice, if we can just get the Statists to drink of it; SCOTUS just nullified section 5 of the VRA (which wasn't on the docket) by eviscerating section 4, and so on. And it's not just partisan -- I consider Ginsburg, Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, and Alito to be serious jurists; Sotomayor and Breyer to be partisans; and Kennedy and Kagan to be "iffy".
I suspect we'll see some odd crossing-over but the ultimate result will be "remand with new rules".

Energy is way too regulated, and all the stupid fucks attempt to say, "20% of your power must come from unicorn farts" and avoid the obvious, "the price of your power is about to double." As far as I'm concerned, we should have steam powerplants based on burning books of regulations and forms and see whether that's competitive with other flavors.

Good! I hope the heat incinerates the racist bastards. Republicans were the first and foremost anti-racists -- beginning before the Civil War and including the demise of Jim Crow -- and the "get thee to a plantation" assholes like Al Sharpton deserve to spend some time squealing.

As a CPA myself, I can attest to the many attempts to force practitioners to "take a knee". If you prepare a tax return based on a reasoned decision that a particular clause is unconstitutional, you can easily lose your right to practice.

I believe she was referring to an issue in the Texas legislature regarding the rights of unborn, but viable, fetuses -- where modern medicine had made them more like "babies" than "fetuses" and knee-jerk abortion law hadn't kept up.
Unfortunately, I'd also have to say that her statements were a tad premature. Early indications that common-sense had prevailed did not fully recognize the complexity of the legislative process.

So, I can't see much reason to argue details with the left any more. The only premise they have is that I, and you, should be their slave. The only premise I have is that no one should be a slave.
All of the details they bandy about serve the purpose of keeping us from recognizing the premise. Honestly, does it matter at all whether they package your slavery as any one of the "-isms"? Hell, even "compassionate conservatism" was just another code for workers being slaves to slackers.
I hear some of you thinking: "Oh great, what the hell is this moron yammering about now?" Well, it is pretty simple. Check your birth certificate. You were born at a particular time. When they write your death certificate, it will state that you died on some particular day. Your life is only comprised of the hours, minutes, and seconds between your birth and your death. Your time is what you get, and nothing matters more than who owns your time.
The left is always finding some new way to steal away your time. Stealing your time is slavery and now that we have lost the premise (by being drawn into all the details), the only question is: are you 100% slave or some other percentage -- either way, that is all they think of you, and they won't be happy until your percentage approaches 100%.
In short, everything you see around you is merely the slavery party attempting to return to their roots.
BTW, John McCain and a whole shitload of other "Republicans" are as pro-slavery as they come. *spit*

My own take is that everything about the debate has been polluted by government overreach. I, personally, find it hard to give rights to a merged ovum and sperm -- it seems too much like magic to go "*bing* -- we have a citizen!".
On the other hand, it seems completely logical to charge someone who discharges a weapon through a womb within days of a normal delivery with murder.
So even if it's just me, we're sure to have debates in every case and circumstance over whether it's appropriate to consider a fetus as property or a person, a medical condition or a citizen, a blessing or a curse.
I can say, with some passion, that I would prefer the Federal government to maintain significant distance from the issue.....being that they've completely screwed it up to date.

Good Lord, California and San Francisco did NOT bring you Nancy Pelosi or Babs Boxer. The PelosiPig was born and raised in Baltimore, and the other hag in Brooklyn. San Francisco was a patriotic, great city before all your scum migrated out in the 60's, including hippies and fruits. Nancy and Babs came this way as well. Is it any wonder that when a bunch of loons congregate, they'll take over? Look at Woodstock in NY...had that bunch stayed there, you would've had the chaos that existed there become the locus of shit for our Country. But they broke camp and came west, defiling the great state of California and the wonderful City of San Francisco.
I remain here fighting the invading hordes.
