The Immigration Bill AKA The Fire Americans Act
ObamaCare + the Amnesty Bill = the perverse incentive to fire American employees and replace them all with amnestied illegals.
Under the Gang of 8's backroom immigration deal with Senators Schumer, Corker and Hoeven, formerly illegal immigrants who are amnestied will be eligible to work, but will not be eligible for ObamaCare. Employers who would be required to pay as much as a $3,000 penalty for most employees who receive an ObamaCare healthcare "exchange" subsidy, would not have to pay the penalty if they hire amnestied immigrants.
Consequently, employers would have a significant incentive to hire or retain amnestied immigrants, rather than current citizens, including those who have recently achieved citizenship via the current naturalization process.

What Keeps Africa from Getting Clean Water: Human Nature
Groups have been trying to bring clean water to remote African villages for decades and still haven't been successful - but that not due to lack of technology or money or trying.
For a while, aid workers largely treated clean water as an engineering problem: If there's no clean water in a village, dig a well. But when researchers actually tested the water in the homes of people who got water from clean wells, they often found contamination."It was a surprise," says Alex Mwaki of Care Kenya, who worked on one of the studies that found contamination. "My reaction, I would say, was, well, we still need to do more. We have not done much."
There are lots of ways water can get contaminated between the time it comes out of the well and the time someone actually drinks it. Maybe the container the family used to fetch the water wasn't clean. Or the container was clean, but the cup people used to scoop the water out wasn't. Or the water got stored in a big clay pot at the house, and kids stuck their hands in it.
All of those problems can be solved by adding just a tiny bit of chlorine, which keeps water free of germs for days. So aid workers started trying to get people to use chlorine. In Kenya today, you can buy little bottles of chlorine, made just for purifying water, for pennies.
Problem solved?
"If only it were that easy," says Evan Green-Lowe, who works in Kenya for a group called Innovations for Poverty Action. Surveys show that only a small percentage of people in Kenya buy the chlorine, even though it's cheap and widely available.
Here's another article pointing out that getting clean water to rural areas is still a hard problem. Hard because human nature.
How To Singlehandedly Erase Traffic Jams by Driving Slower
It's well known that a lot of stop-and-go traffic jams are really due to shock waves in traffic speed that propagate through the cars. And every time you slam on the brakes because traffic suddenly slowed you're transmitting the shock upstream through traffic.
On a day when I immediately started hitting the usual "waves" of stopped traffic, I decided to drive slow. Rather than repeatedly rushing ahead with everyone else, only to come to a halt, I decided to try to drive at the average speed of the traffic. I let a huge gap open up ahead of me, and timed things so I was arriving at the next "stop-wave" just as the last red brake lights were turning off ahead of me. It certainly felt weird to have that huge empty space ahead of me, but I knew I was driving no slower than anyone else. Sometimes I hit it just right and never had to touch the brakes at all, but sometimes I was too fast or slow. There were many "waves" that evening, and this gave me many opportunities to improve my skill as I drove along.I kept this up for maybe half an hour while approaching the city. Finally I happened to glance at my rearview mirror. There was an interesting sight.
It was dusk, the headlights were on, and I was going down a long hill to the bridges. I had a view of miles of highway behind me. In the other lane I could see maybe five of the traffic stop-waves. But in the lane behind me, for miles, TOTALLY UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION. I hadn't realized it, but by driving at the average speed, my car had been "eating" traffic waves. Everyone ahead of me was caught in the stop/go cycle, while everyone behind me was forced to go at a nice smooth 35MPH or so.
I can testify that this technique does work - by buffering the shock you let it dissipate and traffic flow stays smooth. But the problem is that other drivers see the gap in front of you and think you're just holding up traffic. And so they jump in front of you - which forces you to slam on the brakes thus continuing the shock wave....
Apparently mine is:
Jeep, a division of the Chrysler Group, explained that its market research revealed a marked fondness for the name. The 2014 version, said Jim Morrison, director of Jeep marketing, "is a new, very capable vehicle that has the Cherokee name and Cherokee heritage. Our challenge was, as a brand, to link the past image to the present."The company says it respects changed attitudes toward stereotyping. "We want to be politically correct, and we don't want to offend anybody," Mr. Morrison said. Regarding the Cherokee name, he added: "We just haven't gotten any feedback that was disparaging."
Well, here's some: "We are really opposed to stereotypes," said Amanda Clinton, a spokeswoman for the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. "It would have been nice for them to have consulted us in the very least."
But, she added, the Cherokee name is not copyrighted, and the tribe has been offered no royalties for the use of the name. "We have encouraged and applauded schools and universities for dropping offensive mascots," she said, but stopped short of condemning the revived Jeep Cherokee because, "institutionally, the tribe does not have a stance on this."
And Ed Driscoll quotes Jonah Goldberg on how this shifting of the goalposts is no accident:
This is not to say that there are no racist conservatives. But at the philosophical level, liberalism is battling a straw man. This is why liberals must constantly assert that conservatives use code words-because there's nothing obviously racist about conservatism per se. Indeed, the constant manipulation of the language to keep conservatives-and other non-liberals-on the defensive is a necessary tactic for liberal politics.

When Penises Fight, Only A Vagina Can Soothe Them
A woman dressed as a vagina broke up a heated fight between a man and a friend dressed in a penis costume in Glastonbury, England, according to the Central Somerset Gazette. The costumed man and woman were members of the Nomadic Academy of Fools and were performing on the street to promote upcoming plays. A man was offended by the costumes and Chris Murray, the man dressed as a penis, told the Central Somerset Gazette "he started shouting at me, saying it was disgusting and children could see us. I could tell by his body language that he was really angry. I tried to calm him down, I wasn't looking for a fight; but he grabbed my hat, tore it off and chucked it on the pavement."

Did the lower court really have the authority to invalidate the vote. Was it really just booted for no standing or was the 9th circuit was made void as the federal court that ruled it was unconstitutional was not higher enough to invalidate it. So prop 8 stands as the vote was just taken.

They by definition cause traffic waves - often timed, intentionally I think, to make traffic on the main road stop at each cross light.
Posted by: 18-1 at June 26, 2013 10:36 PM (zPVBH)
Well remember that the overall goal is safe maximal flow on average. Supposedly the lights' timing is based on the average traffic speed but that's hard to maintain over large areas so I suspect they give priority to the main roads and stiff the smaller ones.
This is a case where traffic circles actually work much better.

I'm not seeing that where I live at all, at least during rush hour. In the morning I can sit at the roundabout coming from the small road for two 80s pop songs (how time is measured on the morning commute, heh) waiting for the traffic from the main road to lessen enough for all the cars in front of me to merge into the circle.
(If I'm late for work, there isn't much of a wait. Which is kind of an incentive to dick around on the internets over coffee. Sigh.)

One time driving 20 to attend Project A-kon in Dallas, the traffic just stopped on the west bound lanes. So naturally some tried to drive through the median and get on the east bound lanes. Except the median was a small ravine with tall dry grass. Nothing like seeing an LTD stuck straddling the deepest part of the ravine and both bumpers touching dirt.
I just waited out the delay. Now can't even remember what caused the stoppage. But I remember that LTD getting stuck.

I learned the hard way, immediately snap a pick of the license plate. And maybe the person too.
I got hit by a guy in a truck, got out, told him to pull over and he drove off while I was on the phone with the cops.
Also, always just call 911 and when they ask about injuries say "I'm not sure."

I read an geocity page echoing the same idea 10 odd years ago.
Found it to be very true when I had a 40 minute commute through Sacramento to Folsom, especially on a certain highway exit.
Most people just wanted to pass the exit, but with bumper to bumper traffic, they'd have no choice but to block the exit lane while look for an opening. Leaving a gap would let them go through with no net effect on my average speed. Not letting them through meant they would cut in further ahead of me, causing a jerk in traffic as people slammed the brakes.
Then I took engineering in college, and learned wave theory with respect to EM - but completely applicable to traffic. Love how concepts cross domains.

Used to love the air rifle. But don't shoot yourself in the foot (even with leather boots on) with it loaded and 20 pumps just to see if you an take it.
Ugh. Just remembered, I must have been around 10 yo. In the garage so mom could back out and I could close the garage door, I had a brilliant idea. The tire is just made of rubber and soft, the air just makes it stiff. Put my foot under the tire cause, I don't know why. That hurt like a mofo. Mom never had a clue and I never told anyone. Maybe I remember cause it was a red '55 chevy.

240Romeo13, the top speed limit near cities (and everywhere I drive my truck) is 55. That's not a choice. That's the law. Nobody owes you room to speed. Nor does speeding do courteous things to slower vehicles trying to do things like change lanes, merge in, or find a reasonable window for turning. It is, in fact, far more rude to speed in many ways than to obey the law. So, stfu
Passing in the right lane is illegal, so the left lane is by default the passing lane. Why don't they teach real world shit to most of the populace anymore?

Funny you mention that. My wife's snoring once half woke her up. We were at her parents taking care of her mom, so I was on a mattress just below her bed. In her half sleep, she grabbed a big pillow, shouted "stop snoring" wound up and whacked me with it. I saw stars. She didn't believe she snored, so I taped it to show her later that week.

toby928: we've had 'em for quite a while here in Southern California on the SR-91 freeway from Carson to Riverside. "The 91 Toll Lanes." The prices per pass vary based on how congested the rest of the freeway is. John Stossel did a 20/20 story about 'em a while back.

After much painful, painful hand wringing I may have randomly solved it myself.
Only good thing I can say about Dell is when I said I was going to charge them for the last five hours of my time, they were more cooperative about waiving fees. Also, when I had to call HP support, it was like I was calling an underwater airport. But not that clear.

369Tim in ATL,
I was glad when the ychanged the law a few years back in TX so that cars and trucks have the same speed limit and there is also no longer a day and night speed limit. We do still have stretches where trucks are prohibited from the left lane. I personally, try to be courteous to truckers because I do realize that the majority of our goods and merchandise are still delivered by trucks and I like getting my stuff So, thank you.
I too am very tolerant of truckers, as they transport the equipment that I use to make a living. That said, some of them test my patience in the extreme when I'm aproaching one, in the left lane, and some jackwagon doing 54 decides it was a good time to pass 1 doing 53...for a mile or two to complete the pass, usually on an uphill slope....

EC, I think the Earthlings built a humungous space ship, the Ark, when they Earth was doomed. The Ark had a couple of dozen domes branched off the main hull that housed a selection of humans and their particular culture.
Long story short, an 'accident' occurred and killed the crew, leaving the dome-dwellers to unwittingly drift in space for hundreds of years.

That just the aerodynamic drag increase, which isn't everything. Drag can be (somewhat) mitigated with a slippery car with low C/D. C/D is a multiplier in the total drag equation, so a .3 is a lot better than a .6
There's non-aerodynamic factors as well. Does a higher speed allow the transmission to use a higher gear ratio? Does a torque converter "lock up" at some particular speed?
Road surface has a big effect on tire rolling resistance too. Roads you can do 70mph on, tend to be smoother than one you'd do 55mph on.

After Earth has been devastated by years of pollution and nuclear war, a group of scientists send out a team of young people as well as an intelligent chimpanzee to seek out the surviving pockets of human beings in order to help rebuild civilization. Also, as they meet these people they take time to teach them valuable life lessons along the way.

Make a PB&J or bologna sandwich in the am. meet your buddies and hit the lake or the woods all day. As long as you were home by dinner all was good.

The red line started at Fort Ridgeway, in what had once been Arizona It angled east by a little north, to Colony Three, in northern Arkansas; then sharply northeast to St. Louis and its lifeless ruins; then Chicago and Gary, where little bands of Stone Age reversions stalked and fought and ate each other; Detroit, where things that had completely forgotten that they were human emerged from their burrows only at night; Cleveland, where a couple of cobalt bombs must have landed in the lake and drenched everything with radioactivity that still lingered after two centuries; Akron, where vegetation was only beginning to break through the glassy slag; Cincinnati, where they had last stopped-- "[/i}

Up the memory. Most of the Vista preloaded machines were light on memory and suffered horribly because of it. Turning off all the UI eye candy will improve performance a lot too. Also experiment with display color depth. Some drivers may be dramatically faster using 16 bit color rather than 24 or 32.
32 is usually a waste unless the only choices are 16 and 32. The human eye can't resolve 32 bits worth of colors. It can resolve slightly more than 16 bits worth, but less than 24. You'll notice a bit of color banding in some videos at 16 bit depth, but its not usually objectionable

My perspective, in the Reader's Digest version, was that traditional marriage wasn't working out all that well on its own -- so maybe we should concentrate on fixing it before shoving more people into a condemned building. My perspective on this is living in a community property state with my BH for over two decades.
But, as usual, Karl has a superior rant about it -- http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=222217 [as an aside, Karl and I are almost exactly the same age].

Seriously, just to take one aspect -- if you both manage people, and one of you is sued by an employee over some trumped-up HR BS, not being married can firewall half your assets from the fiasco, where being married puts you both 100% at risk of ruin. Anyway, he announced he's doing a meeting highlighting victims of Catholic Church sexual abuse tomorrow night. I admit I finally lost it... it seems like lately he's been on a crusade to lose all of his moderate-to-conservative readers and friends. I responded, "is that all you think the RCC should be judged by?" followed by my belief that while the church has lots to atone for, it's got a long and quite varied history.
Well, his response? It couldn't have been been any more boilerplate than if you guys wrote it. He responded "yeah, and Hitler started up Volkswagen too!!"
So I left a few nasty comments, he left one, and now I can't read it. Guess he blocked me. Asked him about it on Twitter. Anyway, your "there-there-you-don't-need-liberal-asswads-for-friends" -type sympathies are welcome. Sigh...

One of the interesting bits is that the Feds can roll back a gift "in anticipation of death" meant to avoid death tax, but (so far as I know) not roll back a marriage. So if I ever get terminal cancer, I'll have to investigate whether it's time to tie the knot.

It is actually impossible to lose a friend that way. What you lost was never a friend in the first place. Most likely, it was something else that conducted a masquerade in your direction while it seemed convenient on their end. If it had not been now, it would have been later -- if it had not been about this issue, it would have been about another.
It matters not, the only thing you have lost is an illusion you did not need anyway.

Avoided Facebook all day due to the SC ruling. Finally checked it at happy hour, then commented, got flamed and/or "un-friended" by at least a handful of ppl. None will be missed, they were acquaintances anyhow.
I agree the divisions keep getting deeper, I've noticed a lot of old friends that used to like to hash out politics just have blank faced look if something controversial comes up in a conversation. Alinsky seems to be winning....

I admit I took the initiative and unfriended another lefty acquaintance on FB a few months ago. I lost it with him, rather than the other way around. He felt he had the right to order me never to eat at Chik-Fil-A again after the recent nastiness re Dan Cathy. Well, that was a bridge too far for me.
Him I have mixed feelings about. On one hand, he was very anti-religious in general. OTOH, he didn't feel Hugo Chavez's death was anything to be sorry about, has taken fellow lefties to task for their hypocrisy re Fidel Castro, is a gun owner who favors more gun regulation but apparently *not* confiscation, agreed the IRS and David Gregory are out of control, etc. He was at least unpredictable about a few things.

The number of priests molesting kids is at about the same rate as the population as a whole. The bigger problem was the church covering it up and thinking moving the priest to a new location would fix the problem.

Nope. Too broad of a brush. There are still non-governmental unions in the crafts that provide excellent training and instill a work ethic in their people. Yes, they have union bullshit intertwined in their world and yes a lot of it matches your descriptions in some ways. But, it is not 1000% bad as you have stated -- just 74.3% bad, and only 68.6% of the time. Or, maybe I got those percentages backwards -- I'll have to look that up again.

The piece of the puzzle that most are missing is that ANY NSA wiretapping in bulk, in America, is Unconstitutional.
The Constitution does not differentiate between non citizens, and citizens, when it comes to Rights within America.... and in fact says what the Government may NOT do.
The Government cannot search, IN AMERICA (not just citizens), anything without a warrant saying who, what they are looking for, and what is to be searched.
Yet this is exactly what they are doing... and using an Unconstitutional Search on Foreigners on American soil, as an excuse to then search US Citizens.

Remember, your starting point is trying to have a rational conversation with people who are the voluntary descendents of the slavery party. All you are to them is a potential slave. All you will ever be to them is a potential slave. And no, not all members of the slavery party are democrats -- a lot of them are "Republicans" and they sell us out at every opportunity.
Maybe you will get one to convert someday, but it is really doubtful. Slavery is just too powerful of a drug for most people to walk away.
The whole purpose of the conversation from their end is to get you to submit, or to lord something over you. Very few of them actually give a shit what you think, or why.

No, but I have bored the shit outa 'rons and 'ettes reading the ONT lots of times.
I am not kidding about the slavery stuff. The time from the womb to your death is all you get on this earth. It is very, very tempting to try to get more time by stealing it from other people.
Once I tried to find out if there had ever been a spoken language on planet earth that did not have a word for slave. I figgered if they had a word for it they practiced it. It only took minutes to find that it was easy enough to show that slavery was world wide -- and the only place that wasn't instantly documented was aboriginal Australia. For them -- maybe, maybe not. I just don't know, but there damn sure were slaves in Australia after the Brits arrived.
So, to me, it seems extremely unlikely that the human impulse to extend the free time of some mortal's life by stripping others of their time suddenly disappeared. Being honest about it has damn sure disappeared, but there is no way the desire to steal your life left everybody else.

Watching Snowden getting prosecuted by Obama/Holder would be like watching Charles Heston get prosecuted for shouting "It's people".

I can help with that. Ceilidh is pronounced "Kay-Lee". That spelling is the Scot's Gaelic version, and it means "Celebration" or "Gathering of Friends". The Irish Gaelic version is spelled Ceili. No, I am not Celtic, I'm Chinese. But my wife is a mixture of most of northern Europe, including Scots and Irish, and we named a daughter Ceilidh. Phonetically, it comes out as a girls name in Chinese too.

--Whatever. I won't excuse the Spaniards' zealous destruction of doubtless irreplaceable works (especially by the Mayans). I'm just saying that --as leftards would rationalize-- I can get into their headspace why they felt superior. The idea that human beings are equal in worth, regardless of heritage, class, or ethnicity is a historically novel one. I won't excuse human or cultural genocide in any era (with exceptions like the --and I use this term as someone normally irreligious-- diabolical Aztec sacrificial system), but even libtards tacitly acknowledge that some means of civilization have been proven more noble than others over the past few centuries. I hope we never have to see Islamists copy and paste similar justifications (however flimsily) in the near future.

I actually picked up a few college credits by taking "Cultural Relativism", and I'm firmly of the belief that some cultures are better than others. The problem is that the two main modes where people gravitate when cultures rub together -- "tolerance for all" and "let the better dominate" -- are both seriously flawed. Worse yet is when a civilization whipsaws between them.
Instead, I'd propose the notion that "good ideas are worth stealing". Even the world's best culture can benefit by adopting a good piece of the most downtrodden, abject, unclean, nasty culture -- the trick lies in finding such a piece and isolating it from the shitbag it came in. Crushing the inferior culture out-of-hand is bad. Pretending that they're equals is potentially worse. But stealing anything they've done right is progress.

I am glad you proposed a rule. I was starting to think that because of Rembrandt and Vermeer anyone from the Netherlands could kill my ass cuz Yoko Ono sucked. Death justified by comparative art is a pretty scary concept since I live in a country that still has the friggin' Nat. Endowment and actually paid someone to display piss christ.

Okay, since we're on the topic of Celtic/Gaelic.... I am currently
playing Civ V as Boudicca and do not know how to pronounce "Ceilidh"
Hall. Help?
Posted by: pookysgirl at June 26, 2013 11:27 PM (kMnHs)
I can help with that. Ceilidh is pronounced "Kay-Lee". That spelling is the Scot's Gaelic version, and it means "Celebration" or "Gathering of Friends". The Irish Gaelic version is spelled Ceili. No, I am not Celtic, I'm Chinese. But my wife is a mixture of most of northern Europe, including Scots and Irish, and we named a daughter Ceilidh. Phonetically, it comes out as a girls name in Chinese too.
Welcome to the Horde. I am usually a lurker myself, but I jump in every so often.

....and, just as I finish composing @830, here comes a perfect example. Someone Chinese, with a name that is Mongolian and Persian, married to a mixed-European with a Celtic (and beautifully) named daughter. That's how you do it. Take the best of everything under the sun and make it yours!

--Oh, hell yeah. I'm still in my reading, but I suspect the British learned a lot abut statecraft from India in the 18th century. Early Christianity married Athens and Jerusalem (then later Rome). On a darker note, the Romans picked up crucifixion from the Persians and made it an art form. And of course the Mongol Khanates were expert on adapting from Chinese, Arabic, and Indian civilizations and dominated Eurasia for a few centuries.

Yeah, no kidding. I've been following the blogs' devastating take-down of all things Zimmerman, and casually mention that the State's case didn't do so well today.....and she goes off on "he [Zimmerman] shouldn't have been stalking a kid with a gun in his hand."
I mean -- other than Zimmerman wasn't stalking, Trayvon wasn't a kid, and the gun formed no part of the story until it kept a man from being killed after being beaten severely.....what's wrong with that?

Even the greasy-ass prosecutors aren't alleging that.
People get these wierd-ass ideas and run them through a mulcher and then get really committed to the result as if it isn't random neuronal scatter-gunning.
It drives me batty, 'swhy I spend most of my time alone. People say I get too strident when they randomly come up with inane shit and accuse other people of it.
I guess I should be more tolerant of putting people in prison and threatening their lives based on completely made-up bullshit.
After all, potato.

The Narrative is that Zimmerman constantly stalked the complex looking to shoot n*****s. The facts are that Zimmerman called in someone suspicious who was really suspicious, got cornered while retreating, got beat-on, and shot the guy who was whackin' his noggin on the pavement.
And in further facts -- the local constabulary and DA believed it was open-and-shut, and it wasn't until the national media and out-of-town prosecutors showed up that this was going anywhere.

It's pretty fucked up and pinko already... relatively speaking. The commie factories are churning out new models of young tards to fuck things up every year. On the plus side, Gillard got her skanky arse kicked out, so that's something. So much depends upon what sort of people can replace Labor. The Lib/Nats are getting squishier every year. As far as they go, even they are pretty lame on military stuff. Not much gets forwarded in support IMO. Although I have serious doubts whether we should be fucking around in those shitholes in the ME, we should go all in if our allies need it.

I still think they were combing the records for a white on black shooting, and when they saw "George Zimmerman" they decided to make a big deal about it, thinking Zimmerman was probably a GOP Jewish white guy.
Remember, the furor didn't start until over a month after the initial event.

First, on gay marriage--my biggest problem is that this debate in no way has occurred in a way that is going to convince anyone overseas living in a more traditional society. This is because the methods used by proponents have not resorted to arguments based upon grand principles that make it hard for intelligent adherents to oppose, but quick, mainly emotional-based beliefs not based in any great logic train ('if two people love each other'_ that then depends upon demonization and excommunication of opponents for efficacy. I don't think that is going to work in India--they'll excommunicate you right back, because you don't control the culture over there the way you do here.
When you win by brute force alone, you probably aren't going to be able to win against cultures that will brute force you right back. Gays have wasted an opportunity to develop natural law theories in this area, and Progressives have once again shown me they have a thug impulse.
Second: Paula Deen is done for life, for basically being earthy in a politically incorrect way, but even more so for being a chubby Southern middle-aged female who fits all the stereotypes. I'm not aware she has actually committed a crime, and the lawsuit she is fighting has not even gone to trial. But she is now excommunicated from American life.
Ray Lewis is going to be an ESPN announcer. Just sayin' that there may be hate and bias in the system.

Morning, all. I've got nothing except this. Yesterday, Ace asked, How long will the media continuing lying directly to our faces even as they claim for themselves special status as "truth tellers"?
Until lying to our faces results in immediate, painful blowback, that's how long. Now, whether that blowback is in the form of lost jobs or something more visceral is yet to be decided. But the media will lie as long as you let them get away with it. So, as Boss Tweed said, what are you going to do about it?

On the traffic thing, I try, with intermittent success, to follow the keep three seconds between cars rule. This managed to keep from from being involved in a very nasty accident on the very day that I was trading in my last car for my new to me one. Of course, the guy behind me nearly took me out because he wasn't doing that.
It's interesting how many people will see what is a two car gap in front of me and start trying to slide into it or lay on the horn. How dare I not want to die!
Of course, I did want to run off the road the jackass hypermiling Prius driver the other day. That guy was holding up the very limited traffic there was by being a jerk.
