Kling on the Three Languages of Politics
Patterico points out this podcast by economist/writer Arnold Kling where he discusses his theory about the fundamentally different ways that progressives, conservatives, and libertarians view the world.
Kling says that, basically, the three groups look at issues along different axes:
- Progressives look at issues along an axis of oppressed vs. oppressors
- Conservatives look at issues along an axis of civilization vs. barbarism
- Libertarians look at issues along an axis of freedom vs. (government) coercion
The idea is that it is easier to understand how a person from one of those groups looks at an issue if you better understand what axis they jump to.
Kling gives as an example the Boston Marathon bombings. He notes that the Weekly Standard had a piece titled "Civilization and Barbarism." A perfect example of the conservative world view.
Progressives sought a way to view the bombings in the prism of a struggle between oppressed and oppressors, the most famous example of which was David Sirota's piece Let's hope the Boston Marathon bomber is a white American.
Libertarians became concerned about the lockdown of an entire city by the police department.
I haven't listened to it yet but just based on the summary I'm already willing to shell out the $2 for his book on Amazon.
One night, further into my twenties than I'd care to admit, a friend and I wound up being driven by a voluble Russian and his girlfriend from a party in Harvard Square to one in a thoroughly terrifying neighborhood of inner-city Boston. Ivan and I had met two hours before, and had been guzzling alcohol and declaiming poetry ever since. We had hit it off, in our own slurry way.
It was about 2 a.m. Ivan asked how we liked the car. Good, we told him. He was glad. It wasn't his. In fact, he had no idea to whom it belonged. It had come into the possession of a criminal friend who said he could use it for a few days. Ivan warned us that he might need to fight a couple of the people at the party we were going to. Unlike most of my friends who quoted poetry, Ivan was about six-foot-five. He had spent his teen years in one of the most violent parts of metropolitan New York-a place white people never went. He liked it there, he said. His neighbors really knew how to fight.

Genesis's We Can't Dance album had some brilliant songs that never got got on the radio. Driving The Last Spike and Fading Light were great songs. Of course I get nostalgic when I listen to that CD. I was stationed in the UK when it came out.

From my understanding Kling isn't arguing that progressives truly care about the oppressed or are consistent in supporting them - but rather that oppressor vs oppressed is the default model that they fit all new situations into.

The artist might be dumb enough to have illustrated the caveman with a perfectly manicured beard but even then I doubt he (?) would think there was any animal out there whose tanned skin was blue. The bikinis look a little on the cloth side too, IMHO, and not animal skinny.

Technically, there should be separate categories for Left Wing ("Liberal", I guess) vs Statist, instead of "Progressive". I'm not sure how that would work here, though - it seems like the mask has come off the liberals, exposing them as really being statist. Do you suppose there are any real liberals left (ones that aren't hard core socialists, or worse)?

Every system practices spoils of some sort. And I guarantee you that the justification for the IRS abuses will be because those mean nasty conservatives were abusing the system to gain an unfair advantage, and that furthermore any abuse is justified for the greater good of equality that the progressive left will bring.
Think of it as a triangle: The more you focus on a goal of equality, the less personal freedom and rule of law you can allow, since both of those goals are incompatible with a society of full social and economic equality.

I have the stuff his son compiled about how JRRT wrote LotR. It's actually pretty interesting. JRRT was going to write a light-hearted followup, involving Bilbo's wedding... and then the Ring took hold of him, as it were. He realised that the Ring was an archetype of power going back to Gyges the Lydian. And then he decided that the Ring was evil (I disagree with this, but YMMV).

At this point with The Hobbit, Peter Jackson has reached his
Waterloo. The following two movies will see smaller revenue than the
first. When I walked out of the first, I could have stayed another three
hours to finish the story. To be so rudely jerked out of the movie with
Smaug in sight was cruel. And truth be known at least twenty minutes of
the first movie could have been left on the cutting room floor and no
one would have noticed.

Progs believe most people are animals, incapable of self control and want the government to rule us; for our own good. I subdivide them into two groups. Yeah, I can't say I can blame them due to age. But, they've pretty much sucked live for a loooong time. They can be serviceable, at best, but usually rather dire. No real... "wow, I can't believe what I'm hearing" factor. They could handle the post 70's songs ok, but who wants to hear that crap? When they do the old stuff... ugh. As far as studio LP's are concerned, they shouldn't bother. They haven't done anything remarkable since Black and Blue (which was surprisingly good, for post '74). Some Girls had a few good songs, but the playing was only so-so. Since the, blandorama.

I was sitting in with some buddies one night on the front stage at Tootsie's. The house was packed, as Keith Urban had just finished up his show across the street at Bridgestone Arena. I've just gotten through doing Steve Earle's Copperhead Road and was about to get off the stage and let the usual lead singer get back on. He is standing on the bar and yells at me to do another song.
I ask him what he wants me to do, he yells back over the crowd, "Something fast!" I yell to him to be more specific. He glances to the area of the tiny stage behind me, gives me a strange look, and yells back, "Fuck it! Do Sweet Home Alabama!"
I'm thinking, "Fine, no problem" as I turn around to make sure the rest of the band knows what we're doing. Instead of the normal lead guitar player standing back there, there's some dude with long hair and a beard who looks vaguely familiar strapping on the lead. Having played with a bunch of different people, I had long before discovered that you never knew who knew what songs, even "standards," so I say to the guy, "Sweet Home Alabama, you got that one?" Dude gives me a funny look and says, "Yeah, pretty sure I can do that."
So we kick the song off, and dude is just wailing on the guitar. I get halfway into singing the first verse when I realize I had made a complete ass of myself.
The guy playing lead guitar was Gary Rossington.

In all fairness to me, I had had, um, a few drinks by that time. This whole event occurred at almost 1AM.
After we got off the stage we both went outside for a smoke on the sidewalk in front of Tootsies. I apologized for not recognizing him, he thought it was hilarious. Definitely a cool guy, very down to earth. I felt better that no one recognized him out on the sidewalk, either.

Confession time, I haven't been a card-carrying Libertarian Party member since September 2001 when they couldn't make up their minds if the GWoT was a legitimate use of force or not. Party of principal my ass, I'll agree with you that most self-described Libertarians (big L) seem to be doped-out pacifists. I'm in the Neal Boortz mindset, I believe the US will be saved (if it can be) through libertarian principles, but not necessarily through the Libertarian Party.
As far as hating Bush more than Obama...Bush was supposed to be the one that turned it all back, and there is a bit of a sense of betrayal there. Everybody knew what Obama was about, if they were paying attention. But, in the long run, a President is fairly powerless when it comes to domestic matters. If you want to make a statement vote for President, if you want to make a difference concentrate on the Congress/Senate.

The problem is how they approach it. No one sees how the war on some drugs affects them (until they get their door kicked in at 2 AM over Japanese maple trees). What they don't see is the steady erosion of our 4th amendment rights that the war on some drugs has caused. Every time I hear some Republican/conservative say "well, if you have nothing to hide" I just want to punch them in their monkey faces. That's not how our system is supposed to work.

OR...you buy a house and several days after you buy it the cops kick your door in on a no-knock warrant. Seems like the tenant before you had a grow room and the power company dutifully let the authorities know about the high rate of power consumption in your house. They kill your dog and put you face down on the floor and it takes a couple of years and a bevy of lawyers to determine that you just bought the house a couple of days before the raid...not that it does any good cause that house has already been sold at auction. Yep, that really happened, too.

History is a river, wide and broad and deep, with many tributaries and streams. Our Founding Fathers were well aware of this and created a system of government in our Constitution that reflected this knowledge -- as well as a plethora of literature whose message was, essentially, "show your work." It's all there. Every dumbass idea subsequently grafted into government was argued, debated, reasoned-upon, put into historic context, and recommended against -- over 200 years ago. The 2nd Amendment includes, "....the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Imagine how different our circumstances might be if the second sentence said, "....and any representative of the United States who furthers such infringement shall be incarcerated for a period of not less than 20, nor more than 50 years for each instance."
Just imagine.

But there's an even more important little item to worry about -- check out http://www.usconstitution.net/xconst_A1Sec8.html -- see anything about plants in there? Insurance polices? Its a tough call. Lifeson is a very complex player. I spent over 30 years playing a ton of his shit ( the older stuff) along with my usual diet of metal. I'll say this, I met many bass players and drummers who can do peart and lee, but I met very very few guitar players who can pull off a convincing lifeson. Rush would not be Rush without Lifeson, he plays in a very expansive way, never straight chords, but always some variation that puts up a huge wall of tone. It was that way with the old shit anyway, but I haven't followed them much past the moving pictures album. From the little I heard of the later period stuff I can say it just don't thrill me like the old stuff.

When I was in college, infiltrators from liberal clubs would join the new "conservative" clubs (they hadn't existed the year before I got there) and tried to destroy them, sowing dissension and spreading false stories and lodging false complaints about the clubs, fundraising, etc. Also, we had "Moby" style infiltrators at that point as well.
