It's not wise to play the blame game within your own team when trying to confront your opponent. Who exactly ordered those destroyers against Korea? This is some weak leadership and not too smart to air your internal command issues publicly. Don't think that Lil' Kim, Putin, Ahmadinnerjacket, etc haven't noticed either. Yup, go ahead, blame the Navy for pushing the NORKS too far. I guess Commander in Chief is in title only then?
Funny Lil' Kim images. Hottest Baby Names
The latest trending baby names. #1 for girls is Marnie. Is that show Girls really that popular? #1 for guys is Christian. I assume for 50 Shades Of Gray.
Beer Beer Goggles
Yes, I've suffered from this a few times. Although one time I was in Yemen and we drank up all the Becks beer they had at the hotel bar so we started drinking some local Yemen brew. Hey, it wet the whistle and gave us a pretty good buzz. I'll take it. Then there was that one time in the Philippines....
Crazy Stunt
What would you do for a couple of cases of Jack Daniels? Perhaps you would strip nekkid and jump on a log and row down a crocodile infested river as this Australian dude did.
[A fisherman] won two cases of bourbon for jumping on to a log racing down a flooded, crocodile-infested river in the nude. The tiler rode the makeshift raft for about three minutes before clambering back into a boat.“I’d enjoyed a few beers and it seemed a good idea at the time,” he said.
A few beers? Yeah, right.
Speaking of nekkid, there is a new show coming this summer on Discovery Channel called Naked And Afraid. I don't recall this fishing technique being taught in survival school.
Nightlinger said she had been starving after spending two weeks in the wild when she devised an innovative way to catch fish using her private parts as bait and then trapping her meal between her legs.‘We needed something with protein and because the water was so muddy, traditional fishing methods wouldn’t work, so I had to improvise, adapt and overcome,’ said Nightlinger.

Who Has The Best Sex In America
Hmmmm. Who has the best sex in America? Well according to an online dating site (take it with a grain of salt), the northeast has the most sex but the lowest sex drive. The midwest has the highest sex drive, but bottoms out in ranking for actual amount of sex per week.

or only as a peek into the frailty of our leaders in power right now
also just 1 more thing, Do we have any backstops to the derelection of duty of this administration (i'm thinkign of the situtaion as Benghazi where there was No response but telling americans to shut up or arresting obscure video maker as the response) ? (that's just a curiosity)

The now infamous case of a 7 year old being suspended for eating a pastry such that the uneaten portion vaguely resembled a gun raises the question: Does anything that vaguely resembles the shape of a gun a clear and present danger to the safety and security of students? For the “zero tolerance” nutjobs, it is clear that everything from stick figures to fingers, and now pastries, are dangers capable of causing death and destruction.

No, to the concrete thing. But more to the point, I disagree about the grounding. A floating cage would simply experience a current induced within itself. A grounded cage would experience a separate current (and field) to ground.

Midwesterners (cheeseheads, at least) also drink a helluva lot. As Shakespeare noted (I'm paraphrasing because I'm too lazy to look up the actual quote) drink increases the desire, but takes away the performance.

I guess my question is would one have a regional or a global effect. I'm assuming that's a function of altitude. Given the overall shittiness of North Korean rocket and nuclear technology, would an attempted North Korean nuke/EMP malfunction somehow and affect one of its neighbors (SKorea, China, Japan) instead, maybe not causing EMP-type effects in the US proper, but royally fucking over our economy what with all the manufacturing there that we don't do here.

I can't say that I have thought about it a lot, but a path to ground is just that. There would be a flow of current from the cage to ground and a accompanying magnetic field. If the cage, on the other hand, is floating, then the induced current and field will be uniformly formed throughout the cage (skin only perhaps), and dissipated.
I ain't an expert. My only background is the inverse, i.e., containing EMP's inside of a cage.

A bit of military history.
On April 6, 1945 the Japanese launched Operation TEN-GO, the large scale and coordinated Kamikaze attacks against the U.S. and Allies naval fleet supporting the Okinawa Campaign.
Part of TEN-GO was the IJN super-battleship Yamato, one light cruiser and eight destroyers. The plan was for the Yamato to pound the invasion fleet with it's nine 18.1 inch main guns. The shells weighted 3200 lbs. and could travel about 22 miles. It was to be a one way trip as the Yamato did not have enough fuel oil to return to Japan.
But the Yamato never made it near Okinawa. Sighted by two U.S. Submarines on April 6 as it made it's way to sea, the Navy was waiting for it. On April 7 the first U.S. air attack on the Yamato began at 12:41 pm. Less than two hours later it rolled over and sank. Only four damaged destroyers managed to return to Japan.
Although the Yamato suicide mission failed, the air attacks were devastating for the U.S. Navy. At the end of the Okinawa Campaign in late June, of the 12,500 dead, 5000 were sailors. 36 allied ships were sunk and 368 damaged.

His attention is captivated by his Empress. Her dress seems to be, even from this distance, to glitter and shift in color from blue to red to white to orange and back again repeating the cycle. Her figure is slim and tall, her hair falls over her shoulders to stop at her waist in lustrous waves of raven dark hair. Her skin is pale like the finest china Sluggor has ever seen he thinks. He is totally captivated by her beauty and majesty. And she has yet to utter a single word. If she told him to conquer the world right this instant he would.

as to the guy who claims the prosecuter is crazy, those websites are real pro-Knox and probably even associated with her parents PR efforts, b/c what they are really doing is trying to get public support in america against extraditing her to italy when she's found guilty , which is going to happen.

This is an open thread, and all topics can be *proposed*. To be discussed, you have to find someone willing to discuss it with you -- which, seriously, isn't very difficult. OTOH, when you start out with a fabrication that nobody believes and then riposte with, "but, seriously, you guys -- I'm not a serial liar." Well, let's just say that you're not having a really successful interaction day.

now that is a toilet I need, what brand? those low flow toilets=low performance toilets
Posted by: Jake in Idaho at April 06, 2013 11:52 PM (zzeVM)
When we bought this house, it had regular flow toilets. Then, something fell on one of 'em and we couldn't get anything but a 1.6 gal low-flow to replace it -- an American Standard Cadet.
Amazingly, we found that it was more reliable than the original regular toilet and decided to replace the 2nd one even though it hadn't broken. I guess on the 3rd or 4th iteration of "low-flow", they finally got it right.
And then a couple of weeks ago, I was drying off after a shower, staggered a bit, and caught myself on the toilet tank....which promptly broke along the bolt/valve/bolt line across the bottom.....and when I went over to Home Depot, they're on 1.28 gpf now! I had to graft on a generic 1.6 gpf tank to make things work.

Probably varies by area. In Silicon Valley, the HVAC guys are total prima-donna bitches. We were putting up a $800K HQ building in San Jose in the 90's, and told the HVAC guys that they had from the 12th to the 18th to get their stuff in before the ceiling guys buried 'em, and got nothing but stalls and excuses for the whole time....so we buried 'em. Then we got whining like you wouldn't believe. Everyone else could hit the milestone dates and everyone else who had to bust a hump manned-up about it. (PS, I now know a good guy in that field if you need one).
Otherwise....let's see. Flooring guys' knees go at about 35, so you'd better have gotten into estimating and supervision before that. Roofing is just miserable work all around -- and normally ends after a fall (maybe not your first). Plumbing can be a good living -- my cousin's a plumber. Electrician is too easy -- I do everything outside the breaker box myself, and that includes subpanels (in the future, I'm going to subpanel EVERYTHING). Carpentry likewise.
Outside of construction, mechanics can make good money.....but what sort of thing are you interested in and where the heck are you?

If you charge a metal sphere with static electricity, the like charges repel one another, meaning they scatter uniformly about the outer surface of the sphere, and no charge can be found inside it.
I'd say a metal gun safe would make a pretty respectable Faraday cage as long as all surfaces were made of the same thickness of metal, AND the door was well bonded to the door frame at frequent intervals around its perimeter. This could be accomplished by riveting brass spring leaves to the door frame at intervals around the perimeter, and making them with sharp points that could pierce the paint on the door and make good electrical contact with the base metal. Such schemes were used on military vehicles to bond the engine hood to the body for control of radio-frequency noise from the ignition system.

Glassblowing. Master glassblowers who specialize in scientific glassware are in huge demand. Most of them will be retiring in the next decade or two, so the demand will be even higher.
I know two master glassblowers who are millionaires now because they can charge to much for their work due to limited supply.
If I were 18 again, I'd be apprenticing right now.

One thing to keep in mind is how much influence the government has had on a field. For instance, in California you cannot bid on a construction job worth more than $500 without a contractor's license. So if someone asks you to build a fence, you can say, "you'll have to buy about $700 in materials, and pay me by the hour about 20 hours at $30/hour", but you can't say "I'll get it up for $1300." This may seem like a little thing, but it makes a huge difference.....especially when you find a couple of guys who are really good at $15/hour. And contractor's licenses can be a pain in the neck -- application fees, tests, required years of experience.....whereas something like industrial glassblowing, AFAIK, needs none of that.....there are so few around that they rely on word-of-mouth.
Are you looking to stay in the area you're in?

Much tidier and and actually faster to install than dragging ladders back and forth a million times to put in a shitload of homeruns to a big 40-slot main, and a few (relatively) lightly loaded feeders near localized branches result in less voltage drop at the outlets.
Unless someone objects to the cosmetics of having several subs in a place IMO the hot setup is
meter/main -> feeder distribution panel -> area specific subs.
You still need one branch that goes everywhere for the smoke detectors, that could live in the feeder distribution, along with things like garage receptacles/lights, and attic/basement receptacles/lights.
If building a new crib, I'd litter the attic/basement with lights and receptacles so you don't have to drag lead cords around to do something later.

Looked into them thingie-widgets a while back. If you want the efficiency of heating water slowly, you need a centrally-located tank. If you want instant heat at point-of-use, you need a hellacious-sized burner and ample fuel supply (and venting of combustion products) near your point-of-use. Sometimes, that's an easy and obvious tradeoff.....sometimes, it goes against what you'd expect.

Movie industry work is long periods of no phone calls, followed by too few calls then back to nothing. I just know the Mrs wants a full bathtub of hot water.
Posted by: Ashley Judd's Puffy Scamper, aka MrCaniac the concerned1 at April 07, 2013 01:51 AM (Zd/NW)
So, here's the Reader's Digest version of the dealio -- heating water in an insulated tank is very efficient, but slow. When you run it from the tank to where you use it, the heat in the first batch of water goes to warm up the pipe -- so you don't get "hot" until (a) all the actual cold water goes through, and (b) enough hot water has gone through so that the pipe isn't leaching heat out.
If your water usage was (1) run 3 gallons of cold water out, (2) run 4 gallons of hot water to warm pipes, (3) run 1 gallon of hot water for what you really wanted hot water for, (4) repeat -- then the efficiency of heating a tank will be blitzed by the inefficiency of running 5 gallons of hot water for every one you use.
But let's say you run a tub.....(1) run 3 gallons of cold water out, (2) run 4 gallons of hot water to warm pipes, (3) run 30 gallons of hot water to fill tub.....the tank looks much nicer.

I'm sure you have all noticed the same thing - at what point do the self-anointed free-thinkers and seekers of truth become self-aware enough to realize that rejecting one set of mental strictures and behaviors in favor of adhering to another does not make one nonconformist, but rather makes one an adherent of some other set of rules?
There's really no such thing as a "free" thinker, in my mind. In order to consider literally anything, you have to make value judgments about it according to some set of *values* which you've adopted. It seems that someone who is intent on declaring themselves a "free thinker" has missed the entire point of evaluating ideas in favor of elevating themselves, via bumper sticker, above any discussion of the relative value of competing ideas, behaviors, etc. I'm probably overthinking this, but still...

I just found the idea interested me. I've no doubt that the self-proclaimed "free thinker" was in person less interesting than stuff I scrape off the bottom of my shoes, but that really doesn't matter. I guess I still harbor a hope for self-awareness to make a comeback someday, but as long as people can claim some level of intelligence by adopting the thinking of the so-called elite, it sure seems doubtful.

I think you're right about the person I saw in that they were probably just a contrarian crank - I think I said so, though Stephens did so in a much more concise way. The Reagan quote you posted is one of my favorites.

If I expected the postal service to last for awhile, I would say go into that as at least it used to be that while you do your years in the navy, you also rack up years in the USPS so basically, do your full 20 years in the navy and then 5-10 years in the USPS and end up with two retirement funds.

There are some others that don't seem to translate well, but the skills learned can be carried over. For example, the Hull Tech rating includes plumbing, welding and locksmithing depending on the follow-on schools. Damage Controlman has several aspects of the job that carry over well, too, that aren't apparent at first. I was an avionics tech on Hornets and Tomcats for 20 years (I'll warn you right up front, no one goes in with the intention of retiring, they get you 4 years at a time) and now I fix semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
But the biggest skill you will gain...and don't be mistaken, it is a huge plus...is the ability to show up on time and do what you are told/need to do when you get there. Half of life is showing up on time and luck is something you make yourself (preparedness + opportunity).
Have at it, young man!

If its a year and a half late, and they're still having issues like this tweet described:
https://twitter.com/StarCommandGame/status/311141415189090304
That tells me they're struggling with some bad architectural issues and trying to polish turds.
Memory usage problems aren't typically something you fix after the fact by smoothing on some magic code-bondo

My CC was an HTC, his reaction upon learning my intended rating was "A fucking TWIDGET! And an AIRDALE! GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY OFFICE!!!" (this was a few years later than you; more than 5 but less than 10, and it was RTC Great Mistakes.)
Yeah, that was a while back...

Yea, but all that says is their testing regime SUCKS ASS.
If you're testing on (and designing for), the bare minimum spec systems right from day-1, these kind of things wouldn't be present at this point in the development cycle. They fucked up. Bad.
Do you know why could actually install and run Win95 OK (the system, not necessarily piggy apps) on a 386 machine with only 4M and a plain VGA?
It was because Brad Silverberg, the Microsoft VP who was in charge of Win95 development had a freaking PC on his office desk that was configured to the minimum supported specs for the system and installed and tested the daily builds out himself...every day.
When Brad was the development VP at Borland (before jumping to MS), he used to have an old IBM 286 AT on his office desk, when all the developers had 386's, and 486's. He was going to ensure himself that Borland's shit ran on min-spec machines right from the start.
Brad was sharp, he knew how to do it. Tried a couple of times to recruit me to do Win98 performance work. He was on to other things by the time WinME rolled around...and it showed.

"Rough week for me, and there's no reason why it should be...just that old demon dog depression hitting. "
I've dealt with serious bouts of depression my entire adult life. In one period of my life it was crippling, to the point where I lost my job - and my fiance. He decided he didn't want to deal with such shit for the rest of his life. He told me goodbye when I was in the hospital. I don't blame him. It wouldn't have worked out anyway - he was a lefty, so we would have ended up killing each other.
I found bupropion to be indispensible - although I've tried to dispense with it many times. It's not terribly expensive either. For God's sake, if you need a medication, you can find some way to get it - and please do. Depression is a disease that, if untreated, results in death-suicide.

If I may,
My #1 decided to go "Dad's route" for some of the same reasons. Yet this was just after 9/11 and he got alittle bit more than he bargained for.
USMC as a "Doc."
4 tours in Iraq, starting with the invasion.
1 tour in the Afgan.....from which he still has not "quite" come home....and that was 2010. Yet, I would not try to say it was a bad thing . He has a far more "Real" grasp on how life works and how important his current endeavors are both in school and in his day to day work life. He has seen his friends die and that is something most of us will never know. From him, I get,
maybe how it was with the G.I's coming back from WWII, they wanted to put the horror behind them and build up something better. They were indeed the engine that drove this country to a greatness not seen in any nation post WWII.
I see this in my son....he is driven to make things better by his own sheer effort....even with the demons he has not put to rest, he gets up every day and puts his life out there in the world because he believes his efforts count.

They need a release manager who knows how to shut a product down and get it out the door in good enough shape it don't cause you maintenance headaches. IOW, a Vlad the Impaler who knows how to say "no" .
I never had any problems telling developers and marketing people:
"What? Are you on crack? That shit's going to destabilize the code and push us out 6 months minimum."

Then I see my son as someone clear on his understanding of how important your life is. That you get this only one chance to make a difference and that you should make your life count for something to the betterment of the world?

I think your post says some things correct, yet, overall, the returning troops are of the same mindset as were those that have come back from combat in decades past. War is a very dirty business. Those that have had to deal with war on a up front and....ya know, and come home, carry the burden. Only those that have been in actual combat even know WHAT that burden is.
We, of the protected class, who sleep in our beds at night and know not what violence is done on our behalf so that we may continue to sleep in our beds at night....(YA GETTING THE PICTURE NOW??)

Then it got crazier when prices went to 3X and 4X what they were really worth and suddenly new cars appeared in all the FSA driveways, and new widescreen TV appeared in living rooms as they used their cribs as ATM's.
Then just like that, the party was over.
