Hey there's some rocket action going on tonight on the East Coast. NASA's Lunar Atmosphere Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) will blast off from Wallops Island, VA tonight around 11:27pm.
The speeding rocket – barring any clouds – should be visible from eastern North Carolina, Richmond, Va., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Hartford, Conn., and Boston. It will be harder to see from eastern West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Binghamton, N.Y., Syracuse, N.Y., Montpelier, Vt., Bangor, Maine and Presque Isle, Maine.

The Walking Dead College Course
University of California, Irvine is sponsoring a free, online college course called Society, Science, and Survival: Lessons From AMC's The Walking Dead. I may sign up to check it out. I know I could spend an entire year talking about the mistakes our intrepid cast have made on the show.
Conducted by four Irvine professors, with the help of key clips from the show itself, the new Walking Dead online course will cover such topics as the spread of infectious diseases and interventions, social orders, structures, and roles (i.e., locations such as the farm, Woodbury, the prison, and leaders like Rick and the Governor), managing stress in disaster situations, and — of course — nutrition in a post-apocalyptic world.

Nicotine Ban
Pure genius. Not. Flagler County, FL bans nicotine. Note they don't have the stones to outright ban cigarettes, just nicotine. Never mind that you just denied smokers access to devices that actually help them to quit smoking.
The justification for these policies is tied to the increased health-risk associated with tobacco use, especially with regards to employment and health insurance. A provision in the Affordable Care Act, or ACA, allows smokes to be charged 50 percent more than non-smokers by insurance companies. Thus, when employers exclude smokers, they can save money on employee health insurance.
Do these numbnuts realize that there is a big difference between tobacco use and those that are getting doses of nicotine via gum, patch or electronic cigarettes???
And of course here's a typical politician caveat. You can't have it but we will exempt ourselves.
In Flagler County the 635 current employees are exempt from the ban. The County Commission is also exempt including “those individuals who may run for office in the future.”
In other banning news, San Antonio passes ordnance banning anyone who opposes homosexuality from running for office, receiving city contract. The assimilation continues.

Forgive the length, so I get a call from a friend who is driving my house to tell me there is a van off the road and by my fence. I go out to see what happened, a guy (probably from India, or maybe Pakistan, his wife was covered, but in a cross between a burqa and a sari) was driving a van, the tire blew he plowed off the road, knocked over a fairly good sized tree, smashed into a rock retaining wall, pushed a couple of boulders off the wall, and said rocks and his van ended up in my fence.
It is a good thing my friend called to tell me that. The guy was just calling a tow truck, not the police, was planning on having it towed and that was that. I called the police who came and took a report and let the city know that they had a big tree mess to clean up.

How many keys are on your keychain? If few, it's probably wear and tear on the key and you might be able to find a good locksmith (hint: not Pep Boys or the dealer) to make you a new key to the old spec. This is especially attractive if there is information on the key about how it is keyed (little numbers). Alternatively, if you've got 5 pounds of keys on your keychain, you may have actually tweaked the cylinder over the 11 years you've been driving. That's substantially more expensive.

I'd try shooting it full of lock lube graphite powder and run the key in and out a few times to spread it around. Home Depot has the stuff. It comes in a little squeezy tube that puffs it into the lock.
My crib's front door's lock got really balky a few months ago. Shot it full of that graphite dust shit and its smooth as silk now and the key slips right in.
If the key isn't fully 100% seated, it ain't gonna work. If the innards are sticky, it can keep a key from fully seating easily. That was one of my front door's (several) issues.

Ignition switches wear out. It isn't necessarily the key. You may have to have the ignition switch replaced.. ~ $150
It happened on my wife's Saturn at about 30,000 miles.. but she drives so little, the car was 9 years old at the time.

Naval Aviation in the '60s was a different world. He lost three aircraft before he went into combat, then two more over there. No repercussions from our side. And I suspect, being a POW caused him to get stuck in that 60s mindset even after he got home.

Ignition switches wear out. It isn't necessarily the key. You may have to have the ignition switch replaced.. ~ $150
It happened on my wife's Saturn at about 30,000 miles.. but she drives so little, the car was 9 years old at the time.

yes, I am glad my friend called about the van in my fence. The guy who did it looked really irritated with me about calling the police. But, if I hadn't there wouldn't be a police report and that would make trying to collect money to fix the fence from his insurance via my insurance difficult.

I just put a light coat of synthetic grease on the key itself, put the greased key in the lock, and work the lock action a couple of times. It's never failed to get old locks back in reliable service for a few more months.
Note that you'll want to have a paper towel handy to remove the film of grease and lock grit from the key as it's pulled out. It'll need to be wiped off for the first few days.
I do recall one car, an old German panzerwagen, where someone had sheared off the heads of the bolts that had to be removed to get into the steering column to change out the lock cylinder.
They eventually just took it to an auto security shop. The alarm guys wired up an ignition/starter bypass and hid it under the dash edge, then drilled out the steering lock to let the wheel turn. Car did fine in that shape for another hundred thousand miles. Never got stolen.

What a freaking mess that was. The piping from the intercooler to the manifold is about the diameter of a soda can and it was squeezed down to pinky diameter with carbon crud.
I can actually hear the turbocharger whine now and it accelerates like it did when new...it was kinda anemic and wheezy previously.
$90/hr at a repair shop = $540 and down a car for a couple of days. I did the whole deal for about $20 in fresh gaskets and a few cans of squirty/dissolvey goop.

I liked the article about raising kids like it was the '80s from Ace's thread below; I've often thought about doing that should I ever have children. The '80s were a fun time for kids, imo. Yea, it was 6 solid hours of steady plugging away. On the transverse 4-banger TDI, all the EGR hardware is tucked behind the intake manifold next to the firewall near the center for maximum inacessability...and there's an EGR cooler unit that gets cloggy too and has water hose plumbing you gotta diddle with.
Some people are disabling the EGR system to eliminate that carbon buildup crap, but some generations of ECM apparently throw error codes when you do that. Its only a as-needed 80k-100k miles deal though, so its not something you'd endure frequently.

Jeeps most definitely DO NOT suck. We had a Willys MB built in 1944 that was still going when I graduated from high school. Dad and one of my uncles bought 6 surplus for $50 per, and kept one.
It had the fording kit, plus winch, and would go any old where, the drawback was it would high center sometimes if you didn't watch. It was still going when I left for the Army.

Friend of mine had a 73 Charger, one night the key would not go in the lock at all. The little spring-loaded door that covers the lock when the key isn't in froze shut. I was able to break it loose with a screwdriver for her. Did I mention it was 3AM and we were just getting off work? Murphy's Law, at the worst possible time.

What a freaking mess that was. The piping from the intercooler to the manifold is about the diameter of a soda can and it was squeezed down to pinky diameter with carbon crud.
I can actually hear the turbocharger whine now and it accelerates like it did when new...it was kinda anemic and wheezy previously.
$90/hr at a repair shop = $540 and down a car for a couple of days. I did the whole deal for about $20 in fresh gaskets and a few cans of squirty/dissolvey goop.

I installed an aftermarket blower on my Dad's VW Dasher Diesel, when I was in high school. It wasn't too hard - wiring it up to a blank switch on the dash took the longest. Does all that EGR crap interfere with your ability to lay a cloud of greasy black smoke on someone behind you?

Rebuilt the carb, fixed the torched wires, called the old guy who still had the keys who was glad someone was gonna save it.
Changed *7* of the spark plugs. The 8th you'd have to unbolt an engine mount and jack the fucking engine to get to. Yea right. Go with that.
It lasted two years, then reverse shit the bed on the trans. I drove it to a scrap yard and vowed to never buy another Chrysler...even if was only $50.

All the VW diesels from the early TDI (Z1/AHU/ALH engines) onward are pretty clean and don't make hardly any black smoke.
The newer Pump Duze and Common Rail TDI's are real good. The most recent Common Rail TDI even meets CA's most stringent emissions requirements for CO, NOx, and particulates...
...cleaner than most gas engines actually. They got a particulate trap system now that traps the particulates and goes through an automatic "regen" cycle every so often and heats the particulate crud up to the point where it combusts and cleans the trap out.
The larger VW's implement the AddBlue system too to cut NOx further.
These ain't your old school diesels. This shit be high tech

I'm speaking as the last of the baby-boomers, born in 1964, and with my kids being on the cusp, where they are still somewhat reasonable, but way spoiled. I can blame my ex-husband, who still showers them with lavish vacations, etc., but I am just as bad. My "kids" have good manners, however, and know how to behave in society and at a job interview. Purp, I had a Dodge Rampage that I bought for $50 and drove for 10 years and almost 200K miles. It was an economy thing. The 1.7 VW engine was more economical than the 2.2/2.5 Chrysler, which by the way was eventually featured in every Chrysler model through the 80's. Fine motor, that. FWIW, Chrysler used more Mitsubishi motors than they did VW motors.

VF-750 was made up until 84 when the tariff kicked in and then not again until 87 when it expired. Pretty sure the same holds true for Suzuki unless they paid extra to import them, most of them went to 700's. The Gold Wing is made here so didn't pay a tariff.

I don't think 4 banger pickups are sold anymore. Old Toyotas have legendary reliability and Nissans were good too. I love my old (body on frame) Ranger, but it might be time to scrap it as the electrical meltdown broke a lot of stuff.

That's usually a small adjustment or simple hinge pin replacement if they're worn so badly it affects the striker geometry...unless of course its been T-boned or is rusted so badly the door is kinda flapping up and down freely

Probably resetting a wear sensor warning diagnostic on the computer. A cheap $50 OBD-2 read/scan/reset tool can do that. Some auto parts stores will read the diag code with a hand held OBD tool and reset it for free.
A pad/rotor change shouldn't in theory have any effect on ABS. ABS is usually just a wheel rotation sensor (ie. Hall Effect transistor that's triggering off a small magnet on the hubs. If the engine/transmission is applying power and the wheels aren't turning (i.e. skid), then the ABS system pulses the brakes to get wheels moving a bit to regain control.
The ABS system is typically completely divorced from the mechanical aspects of pads/rotors

They had wear sensors on the front pads, but it was always the rear pads that wore out first.
I found that out the hard way on a 2000 Passat when the rears went down to metal on metal.
With a little research, turned out it wasn't an isolated case, that was just the way they were. I just put dramatically cheaper non-sensor pads on the front, jumpered the sensor harness to fake it out and taped it up out of the way. It was completely worthless.

BTW, avoid 1999-2004 Acura TLs. The transmissions were crap and there is a high probability it will blow at anywhere from 60k to 120k miles regardless of how well you take care of it.

The 98' Jetta's rear has drums. Did the fronts a couple years ago and looked at the rear shoes and they were still like factory fresh. Just put the drums back on with some fresh grease and a new seal for the bearings.
These days, I just go with good metallic pads and new rotors. New aftermarket rotors for VW's are so cheap it doesn't pay to screw around trying to get'em cut.

If I were to do that dream falcon, the whole drive train would have to be upgraded. IFS units are common, or a Mustang II thingie. I assume frame connectors, stiffening, probably roll bar and racing seats - lowered, matte black with shiny tooth custom grille - handling like a track car, crate 302, T5 - would be awesome ... now only if I had the skills and the money ... the cars are not rare.
They were talking about inspections on the pod cast. Our rules have changed here, and, honestly, the air inspections have cleaned up the brown cloud. Since the 80s our population has doubled or more, but the pollution is much better. We used to have safety inspections, as well as air, but there was too much corruption so they put that to an end.
That being said, they used to have a rolling 25 year classic registration, but they still had to pass the air test. They changed it, and drew a permanent line at '72 and now those cars are exempt, so you can do literally anything to them without fear.

It's strange. I bought some Brembo disc brakes. They warped. I had them turned and used different pads. They warped again. They were about $60-$70 each.
Before that I used some el-cheapo discs that were $20-30 each. Not a single problem. Frustrating and confusing.

Someone gave me a Dasher diesel wagon for free when I first moved to FL. It had been T-boned, squashed in on the driver side all hunchback like and drove down the road kinda sideways and the doors didn't close right.
I took the seats out, and used a big freaking railroad car jack and a 4x4 to kinda stretch everything more or less back into place so the doors could at least be made to close.
I ran that car for several years after my Neanderthal body work without any problems...and it didn't chew up tires.

656 Not to get too technical Purp but they aren't Hall effect they're just passive coils (~700ohms). That's why they don't need a power source to operate like Hall effect sensors do. They're using simple magnetic trigger wheels.
Rotors usually warp (causing pedal pulsation on braking) due to some f'n jackass putting on the lugnuts with an impact. 90-95% of the time.

We can't tempt people to be good and/or sensible. You can discipline your kids to load the dice on their decision making in their favor. I really like the Hawk HPS pads, but they do produce a fair amount of dust. Best street pads I've ever had tho.

It all started when towns started cracking down on "junk cars" in the 70's and phasing out various shop classes in high school.
Young people learned a lot about how shit works and using tools by screwing around with those "junk cars", even if they never got them running.
People will wait around all day for a plumber to change a shitter's flush valve for $150, when they could have just gone to Walmart, bought a Fluidmaster 4000, and a freaking cheap pair of pump pliers for under $20, driven home, and installed the damn thing total time start to finish, including WMT trip, maybe an hour and a half.
Basic mechanical competence is EMPOWERING. It can save you a ton of money as well as wasted days waiting around for "professionals" to show up.
How hard is it to put down the Internet for a half hour to save $150 and a day of thumb twiddling?

Ended up having to move into the wood VVEERRYY SSLLOOWWLLYY to make sure that the mill had some, but not too many, chips in the air. I'm suspecting that this was because the spindle speed on a drill press is 1/6 what it would be in a real mill. Am I on the right track?
I realize that I'm brainstorming things in unconventional ways, but that's sort of the idea. If I wanted things done exactly right, I'd take it to a pro or take classes on being a pro. But that a 4 flute mill moving into wood from the side ended up at such a crappy feed is irritating. From observing production CNC mills in aluminum, it should be like buttah.

Cthulhu, I've also noticed how many people are utterly helpless when it comes to basic things. I'm no carpenter, mechanic, plumber, or outdoorsman, but compared to them I am which is sad to say the least.
My father MADE me learn such things and I am glad he did. I work with a 30 something year old guy who cannot change a tire. He just shrugs and says that is what Triple A is for. And if there is no Triple A anymore?
Oh well, if society goes to crap the prepared, more capable, or predators will need someone to benefit from.

Internet can actually be a big help. iPad or similar makes a damn fine repair manual for just about any kind of repair - automotive, home, whatever.

Agreed Methos, it's hard to convince a kid when your opponents fundamental organizing principle is sex without consequence and unbridled hedonism.
However, I do not think withdrawal and condemnation are the correct response. I, for one, am not looking for a cataclysm so that I can validate my beliefs. I would prefer to avoid such, but we are pushing upstream at this point. Maybe humor is our only remaining weapon, IDK ...
At least we can laugh as we go soggy into the long, dark, greyish ooze that is all that remains of our bowl of Kaboom society ...

It all started when towns started cracking down on "junk cars" in the 70's and phasing out various shop classes in high school.
Young people learned a lot about how shit works and using tools by screwing around with those "junk cars", even if they never got them running.
People will wait around all day for a plumber to change a shitter's flush valve for $150, when they could have just gone to Walmart, bought a Fluidmaster 4000, and a freaking cheap pair of pump pliers for under $20, driven home, and installed the damn thing total time start to finish, including WMT trip, maybe an hour and a half.
Basic mechanical competence is EMPOWERING. It can save you a ton of money as well as wasted days waiting around for "professionals" to show up.
How hard is it to put down the Internet for a half hour to save $150 and a day of thumb twiddling?

That's basic fear of the unknown. I admit, I'm affected by that too when its something new or I have to acquire some special new tools to do.
Mostly I beat it by doing a LOT of research, gathering tools and materials, searching for how others did it, and pouring over specs/manuals until I can run the job in my mind start to finish and anticipate show stopper problems (busted studs, stripped hex bolt heads, etc) and their resolutions.
Essentially, I build a mental model of the job, then keep running it until the anxiety subsides and confidence builds that I can handle all possible roadblocks...
...then when I take the sandals off and put the work shoes on, I'm committed to starting it. If I don't conciously take the sandals off, I'll procrastinate all freaking day ;->

Cthulu you are a true renaissance man. I'm still learning lots of stuff, and you tube is my best source. I do regret not taking the shop classes, but the other things I took were of use. What I need now is more practice, and some experienced help. It's a scary proposition to do things on cars you have never done before on your own, because safety. In my technical work, I tell my mentees my path to knowledge :
1) Read
2) Do
3) Read some more
4) Do some more
5) Fix????
6) Master!

We did driveway car repair. Partly because we didn't have the money to pay somebody else to fix it. Newest family car we had was 15 years old. I still do all the minor (and some major) vehicle maintenance. Drive it till the wheels fall off, then put them back on and drive it some more.

Actual factory repair manuals help a lot with that sort of thing. I spent $250 for the Bentley manual and VW factory repair DVD when I started doing the serious shit on this Jetta diesel. That shit already paid for itself several times over already.

Bomber, ever see where Louie Anderson is talking about when he was a child and his father made him work on cars with him? That was a bit of my childhood and made me laugh just out of the shared memories.
My dad worked his way through life. He had a job at 16 picking up dead bodies from accidents. He worked highrise construction (which almost got him killed) and worked at Joliet Arsenal making TNT. He ended up guarding a few presidents. He got to guard Reagan (his hero) and met Bob Hope. Said Reagan was nice guy who treated them like equals and would ask about their families etc.
He said Carter was an arrogant, elitest prick who treated them like garbage.
Anyway, I get some of my work ethic from him. I'm just old enough to be part of the generation that sees being a slacker as pathetic and something to be ashamed of.
Well, goodnight all. I have a memorial to attend tomorrow and I suspect the widow and family would be offended if I nodded off while there.

There's a knack to developing a plan and mentally executing it to shake down problems. Lots of folks just plain can't. I find, myself, that I can do it better if multiple people are involved. A gets stalled, B's trudging on, you assign A to help B and break up A's logjam. A restarts, but he's behind, you borrow an hour of B for A.....

I am in no way a Renaissance man.....but I'm game to try most anything. And, when I say "most", I mean stuff like.....I'll try anything electrical where I can shut everything down (e.g. I won't do the service box, 'cause half of that's always hot). I won't do automobile brakes (I don't ever want to guess my way through and have a toddler wander in front of my car). I won't overhaul my own SCUBA regs. And I won't phony-up building code inspections. I only do stuff that's easily understandable and where I firmly believe a nuance won't kill anyone.

ex. wobbly extensions totally rock. Sometimes they can save you from having to dismantle everything. I've got an angle drive attachment for a standard drill that can get into spots a regular 90 degree drill or even a stubby screwdriver couldn't. Black and Decker makes it and they sell'em at WMT. Milwaukee makes one too but the cheap Black and Decker is a better value and holds up well.

The problem is what do you (anyone, generally) mean by fixing it? If you mean getting back the prosperity of the 80s and 90s, then what you are trying to do is reestablish a lie that is in the last stages of coming undone.
Unless you are near retirement age, you have no memory of America being truly prosperous. We have been faking prosperity through expanding credit for a long time. That only works as long as you can find exponentially more suckers to load up on debt and who are capable of making payments on it to keep the system moving. Once you run out, either of suckers, or capacity to make payments, the mess unravels, with the opposite effect you got while it was accumulating. This isn't something that can be 'fixed' any more than we can prevent avalanches.
Once those gathered consequences have cleared, then we can consider fixing things based on where we are afterwards and what folks have learned.

You are wearing ANSI eye protection, correct?
Do you have a drill press or a mill? Chucks, like on most drills, are not designed to take any side loads ... at all. I do not think you will grenade the chuck, but you are likely to break / eject the end mill.
If you can use collets on the spindle of your equipment, then you can safely mill.
Note that end mills, in general, are not designed to plunge like a drill. You are likely to get away with doing so in wood, but you should expect to regret doing so in aluminum, and certainly in steel.
The spindle RPM for wood is higher than aluminum, but I don't know what it is. Wood is normally not milled on equipment used for metal, as the chips get in the ways and coolant.
I'd use a 2 flute end mill for wood, as the chips will clear quicker than with a 4-flute end mill. I recently picked up the wrong end mill, and re-learned this lesson.
If you use a .250 endmill ... for aluminum, the spindle RPM should be 4800 RPM ... for wood, probably higher. I'm guessing that your equipment is limited to 2500RPM or so, so you will have to feed slower.
If you put the endmill in a collet, and then into the spindle, try about 0.050" depth of cut, 3" per minute feed. This is very slow feed.
If you get a "springy" sensation when feeding, or an increase in resistance, then the endmill may be clogged, and about to break, or both.
FWIW, the machining class starts in about 2 weeks, and they have very much more information.

1. As a matter of fact, I was wearing eye protection, where I normally wouldn't....because I knew I was stretching equipment in ways I wasn't fully experienced in doing.
2. I was using a drill press as a mill. I know it's folly, and -- furthermore -- I own a real mill. But it was a quickie project with no precision to "warm up the tools". I stalled the chuck a couple of times, which was "edgy" enough.
3. No plunging involved. Certainly wouldn't have 4-fluted if I were contemplating same.
4. Interesting and noted about 2-flutes clearing faster. I'd been looking to 4-flute for more smooth, machined outcomes.
5. The feed was painfully, painfully, painfully slow....and I think you confirmed that in your "aluminum should be 4800" comment.

At 4800RPM, 2 flutes., 0.015" DOC and .002" chip, the feed rate in aluminum is about 19 IPM ... reasonably fast.
Was your wood a thin sheet, maybe 1/4" thick? Be careful, as it will flex when clamped tightly in a vise ... and when cut, may break. Clamping with hold-downs alleviates much of this ... but be sure to never cut or drill through the material.
NO ONE wants to be the clown that cuts the table or vise ... at least, I don't. I mount everything on a fixture plate that I expect to cut.

All over that stuff....the basic game is that I bought a package of stuff from Little Machine Shop, and got a set of parallels in a box where the dividers were all destroyed in shipping. Thought, "dirt easy if you can X-Y your tool", and -- since I had another reason to own a HFT cross-slide vise for my drill press, went for it.
Destroyed dividers were in lumber like 1/4" x 7-1/16", cut with notches for the 10 parallels from 1/2" by 1/8" -- so I figured ("simplify, simplify, simplify!") that I'd clamp in some 1x4 lumber and do transverse slots, then trim to 7-1/16 long and whatever high.
First attempt, clamped the lumber and moved in, and tore the crap out of the workpiece. Obviously moved in to fast with a spindle too slow. Next attempt, got a reasonable slot (with some burning) after about 30 minutes of moving.
Currently mulling over my busy day.....

It's far worse than that. Stockman's book make it pretty clear the whole Dot.com bubble was sheer fakery, using the guise of tech enthusiasm to run a lot of financial scams. The insane valuation of companies that had no real income or potential for such makes a lot more sense in this light.
He also notes that we would have seen some pretty brutal bouts of inflation in the last twenty ears if not for the effect of China becoming our manufacturing sector. What made Apple into a consumer electronics powerhouse was a major deflation in finished goods that served to hide the inflation of the money. Some of these products we've become accustomed to have a hidden cost that allowed them to appear a few years earlier than their cost should have allowed.
