Thurston, we have a problem. If they'll lie about something as mundane as this, they'll lie about anything (and they have). Their behavior says a lot about the press. They KNOW the press will carry their water and aren't afraid of being called out on their lies. Although it is surprising that it was CBS that pushed the Kerry boat thing. Probably just a mistake. Russian Reset

Perhaps SecState could get off his yacht for a bit and stop fixating on a forever elusive Palestinian/Israeli peace thingy and focus on the Russians. You know, the guys that are testing a new missile in violation of the '87 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty and building their own missile defense. Perhaps it is time to stop being so "flexible" with the Russians since the election is over.

I wonder if Bannion had anything to do with this?

I wouldn't run in these LEGO stilettos. Actually, you'd be OK. I wouldn't run with the LEGO prosthetic leg though.

Interesting Read

Physicist Michio Kaku on building a Death Star and the Silicon Valley brain drain. Sadly, our public education system is failing to address the issue of the Silicon Valley brain drain.

Another casualty of the decline in interest surrounding science and even math is the US education system, which Kaku describes as the most dysfunctional among advanced capitalist countries.

"Fifty percent of the top engineers and grunts doing the work in Silicon Valley are foreign-born and that is unsustainable," Kaku says. "One day, the brain drain will reverse -- it's starting to happen. Now top scientists are starting to go back to China and back to India. That's why our education cannot continue to be one of the worst known to science."

I'm sure Common Core will fix this. Yeah, right.

14 UFC 162 on. Heavyweight fight earlier had 17 second KO. Also had the comical image of skinny female ref trying to push 250 lb rage monster off the guy he was beating unconscious. Probably should have large men be refs when the heavyweights fight. She literally bounced off him in her first attempt to stop the fight. He was in full rage monster mode and barely noticed her.

I had an old boyfriend suggest to me the other weekend at my all school reunion that we go "make out" in the car. I'm sure he was trying to be funny but at my age all I could think about was the big console between the seats, I was having visions of dislocated hips and shoulder strain. Hell I can hardly reach my purse on the passenger seat. I have to search way back in my memory bank for a bench seat.

With an automatics, you loose a heck of a lot of control. For an underpowered car, you can actually accelerate quite well by downshifting, &c.

And before anyone here says anything, no, I don't need the hand free for the reason some of you are undoubtedly thinking. Good news on the stray puppy we found.  We managed to track down the owners, and reunited him with his "partner".  The owners live next to our neighbourhood and the two pups seem to adventure out on their own every day.  We will probably see them again roaming the streets, but now I know where they live.

266 I really apologize for the text wall Morons. I'll take my turn in the Barrel if it's so deemed. MeCochran's Rules of Life Rule #7: Life's a b*tch, deal with it. This life has never been fair, nor will it ever be fair. Deal. With. It. Him I understand and agree for the most part. BUT there are some cases where some people have been dealt a really shitty hand beyond their control. It's the people who have the perfect wives, kids, house, etc. that F'ing piss me off cause they do not know what real hardship is nor do they give a F. Just sayin. Walk a mile....just a mile...in someone else's shoes before making this kind of statement. Me And, not to be a jerk, but you have no idea what miles I've walked in my life. What hardships I've faced. What screw jobs or completely effed things have happened. I stand by my statement. People need to learn to deal with life. Him I will not debate. Sure, we all have our hardships that we have to "deal with." But, some are much more complex than others. A little compassion and encouragement goes along way....much better than "suck it up and deal with it." Me It's not complex. I get it. Life sucks. Good people get screwed. 24/7/365 from the start of time until Christ returns. Life just sucks. We can either let those hardships, those screw jobs, eat away at us, make us angry and bitter and spiteful...or we can choose to rise above those things. We can choose to better ourselves. We can choose happiness. I'm afflicted with a genetic disease that affects less than 1% of the US population. It will shorten my life. I face vastly increased risk of heart disease, stroke, renal failure, blindness, neuropathy (nerve pain), non healing wounds and even amputation of extremities. Not to mention the immeasurable impact it's had on my day to day life. Two years ago a simple stomach illness almost killed me. I did nothing to deserve that. I was diagnosed at the age of 5. I have every reason to be bitter and resentful and angry. I choose not to be. I choose to enjoy the time and blessings God has bestowed on me. We all have a choice to make. Him Understood, my friend. I cannot walk a mile in those shoes. I have absolutely no idea what that's like. Likewise, you'd probably have to agree on my end. No need to go there. It was made clear that no one even gives a sh*t anyway. That was all I was trying to say. The burdens that each of us bear are different. None is "worse" than the other. However, even though we have to choose to rise up out of it as best as we can, it becomes far more difficult when you look over your shoulder and no one is there.

Most cars today, while technologically superior, have all the appeal of a dead stump.  Seems they engineered the personality out of them.

I have worked on ALL of them--they're cookie cutter cars.

My Neon lasted 160K miles. By the end, it was still running but starting to fall apart (e.g., odometer stopped counting miles, speedomoter and various gauges stopped working, etc.). I've flown into the St. Barths one and see the landings at St. Maarten.  The St. Barths landing angle is much steeper than the "representation" shown.  The hill is much higher than depicted, so the pilot has to first graze the top and then immediately nose dive toward the runway to make it before he ends up on the beach and in the water.  If you don't like flying, this is one where you are better off taking a boat onto the island.

364 330 From YouTube, the ten most scary airports.

I hope Boston's Logan is on the list, because landing in that airport is scary - the plane gets lower and lower, and all you see below you is water, water getting closer, water getting even closer, water getting REALLY CLOSE, then suddenly - tarmac. ugh.

Posted by: chemjeff at July 06, 2013 11:27 PM (9GG/0)

I agree 100%. And planes have to bank really hard to one side as you descend over Boston Harbor and approach the tarmac. Then, after your flight, you have to deal with the horrible Boston traffic. The latter reason is one of several reasons why I usually fly into Manchester, NH, which is 50 miles North of Boston.

YES! I am teacher and have asked our representatives to fight the implementation of Common Core here in AZ. It is another huge fed. takeover of education and for a Catholic school its a death knell for quality education. Michelle Malkin has a couple of good articles about and there's a great articles called something like "two moms and common core" where they saw the damage it was doing in their Catholic school and fought it. I think in Illinois.

I've seen a Toro and an Eldo (both fully stock) melthe front tires off from a standstill. Side by side, at that. Took 15 minutes for the smoke to clear. Good times...

And I'm old enough to remember the old Hong Kong airport, where you got to look through the windows at people's laundry on approach.

Maybe '97? The gig I was on was traveling incognito to trade shows in Hong Kong and Taipei. I was the VP and CFO of a small telecom company, pretending to be the CEO of an even smaller telecom company, looking to make contacts.

Along the way, I discovered that this sales rep who was going "we'll be your exclusive agent in the East! It'll be great!" was telling people in his booth, "I could sell you the XXX crap -- I'm their rep, too -- but you should really buy YYY (the competition)." -- because, of course, he could make more of a commission from them.

Some of them had 4x8 boards with phone numbers and pictures. More civilized than having to go to the bathroom and read'em off the stall. Typically, you walk in and have a few beers, then some local dude (and his friend(s) comes over to talk smack. You throw down and then you're all friends and drink beer together. iirc, it's an integral part of Windows these days.  You can't uninstall it through that panel.  You need to go digging around in whichever panel allows you to add or remove components from Windows itself.  Unfortunately, I don't remember where that is off the top of my head.

565 And it was pretty much a scene from a Rocky movie. Silva, the fast black Brazilian guy, was taunting the slower, white American guy Weidman. Silva was dropping his hands, sticking his chin out, going all Ali on him. Doing the rope-a-dope. Laughing at his punches. 2nd round opens and Silva is doing it again. Showing no respect. Silva drops his hands, chin out. Weidman tags him. At that point Silva actually pretends to be hurt -- he wobbles his legs for the crowd, ooh, what a powerful punch -- and then Weidman hit him for real ... and that was that. Silva, the greatest UFC fighter ever, a man who routinely makes all the other elite fighters look slow and stupid ... looked slow and stupid. Silva forgot he was 38. He no longer was fast enough to pull off that taunting shit. And he got knocked the fuck out mid-taunt. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Even though Silva is a cocky idiot who got what he deserved there ... I still like the guy. He was so good for so long. He just didn't notice he got old until he woke up on the canvas.

588 Uhm... Need some advice from Morons & 'Ettes! Just started up a job that requires me to spend hours and hours knocking on peoples' doors to sell them cable. I have done this before for other companies just not one with such a focus on Apartment Complexes. (Don't need your opinion about this particularly but I think it is a fine thing to do for my community and an honorable way to make money.YMMV) My PROBLEM is: It is very hot and humid in Tucson right now. Either the Apt alcove that I am tasked to audit is in the shade w/ no breeze or in the blazing hot, eye of a wrathful god. Either way, I get very sweaty. I've learned to live w/ the embarrassment of dripping face sweat. I was not prepared to hear a little duckling say to her momma after I chanced to meet her and her brood on the doorstep (and be rebuffed), "That lady smelled bad!" "Yeah, she smelled like Daddy when he comes from gym and won't shower!" I just stepped out of the shower not less than 4 hours ago. (Though I did take a Gatorade & Smoke break appx 45 min. before...) What I am wondering is this: Would I be better off with something like a tee-shirt rather than a bra? I don't wear bras for support, necessarily. It's just a way to keep my teeny-tiny, ointy-pointy boobehs in line and prevent scratching teh tittays on rough fabrics. It seems counter-intuitive to put on an extra shirt when things are really hot but maybe it's not all bad. (No. Camisole is NOT the answer!) How do guys do it?

595 I've found that a calorie restricted diet dramatically reduces the amount I sweat if I'm not doing jumping jacks or something like that.

Excess calories make excess heat.  Heat gotta get dumped somehow.

Spreading the calories out over the course of a day in 100-200 calorie units helps too.  Woof down 600 in one shot and you'll be feeling it.

What we really need is a complete de-Federalization of Education. The Department of Education was only created in 1979 (by Carter *spit*), is obviously not part of Article I, section 8 (the enumerated powers under the Constitution), wasn't around during the "glory days" when school actually halfway worked, and has spent bucketloads of money to no avail (read it and freakin' weep -- http://rogerkerr.wordpress.com/2011/03/11/friday-graph-public-education-spending-vs-results/ ).

There should be a Constitutional Amendment to keep the meddling hands of the Federal government completely and utterly out of Education, from top-to-bottom and side-to-side....oh, wait! There is one already -- the Tenth!

607 "28L at SFO is a scary landing. Lower, lower, oh shit!! We're gonna hit the water!!"

Except if you do hit the water... you'll probably be fine.

There was a famous incident many years ago when Japan Air Lines landed a Douglas DC-8 short of the runway at SFO. Everyone was okay. The water is so shallow that the plane just stood there in the water on its gear.

United had (and have) a monster maintenance base there. JAL paid United to have their mechs tow the DC-8 out of the Bay and overhaul it, and put it back in service, in which capacity it flew for many more years.

By contrast, what the Koreans managed to do was to hit the breakwater at the edge of the runway fill. A breakwater lined with big rocks. Looks like it ripped one engine and one main gear completely off the jet, then broke off the tail.

So: land long, you're fine (that runway is two miles or so). Land short, you and the plane may get drenched but it and you will survive.  Do *not* land squarely on the breakwater. It will break the plane.

608 Deety Try wearing some of the "Under Armor" type of clothing. They have all kinds of shirts for men and women in all kinds of styles. "UA" is kind of expensive, but Wal-Mart, KMart, and Target all have their own brands that work just as well. They also dry real quickly, so you can stop at a gas station and rinse it out in the bathroom sink and give yourself a sink bath and then put it back on while it is wet. It will dry in minutes.

#1 -- a hat. Like one of these http://www.villagehatshop.com/henschel-aussie-solarweave-crushable-hat-2x-olive.html -- but not necessarily that one (I got mine for less than half the $$$).

#2 -- deodorant. Doesn't help with the face so much, but stuns the sweat glands near scent-concentrators (the ones that are trying to send a message [located near convenient tufts of hair]).

#3 -- hydration. The more that your sweat is just salt water, the less it will have a determinable odor.

#4 -- air-permeable clothing.

#5 -- Keep core temp cool. A neck cooler is probably best for this, a la http://tinyurl.com/l7p3zlh

Unfortunately, since about 1998 or so... you can't be an adult female w/a B-cup to get a properly fitted bra that does not involve some padding. So, they are not the BEST candidates for tossing in the washer without a care, every day you sweat like a steam engine. 628 No cotton T -- that will last about an hour.  You need a wicking T-shirt, or even better a vest/wife beater style.  The short sleeve polo also sucks, if its a uniform - you might be stuck with it.  The fabric is too thick and it doesn't keep the sun off of your arms.  You need a loose thin long sleeve shirt - white, you can tuck it in.

629 Deety Go to Dicks or some sporting goods store and see uf you can find a yoga or jogging bra. They wont have padding. 646 Slowing down pace doesn't necessarily mean getting less done.  It means doing what you do in a more deliberate planned manner.

I've been described by one guy I worked with on a job as "deceptively slow".  I don't look as frenetic as most, but every motion is deliberate, nothing is wasted, everything planned.  I'll finish faster than the people who look "busy".

Its like the guidance Strunk and White offers about writing - "let every word tell".  When its hot, let every motion work for you and waste none.

It may take several iterations to refine and optimize your "system" too.  For me, being an INTJ, that sort of process optimization is built into my nature.  Its something I do without conciously thinking about it whenever I'm doing something repetitive, but other personality types can do it as a conscious action.

Little things matter.  Like having spare pens on hand, ordering paperwork in the order it would naturally be presented, learning how to spot a "talker" who has no real intentions of actually buying, but enjoys blabbing.

Optimizing the interaction duration will save more time than anything else with cold calling.

Most of the time that people get "whiff", it's not the sweat -- it's the concentrated sweat w/ growing bacteria. That's mainly in weird scent-concentrating areas with extra hair -- e.g. armpits, pubes, etc. Normal forearms don't smell no matter how much sweating you do.

672 Hardtop and Convertible are diametrically opposed terms (I don't give a shit, if it's a hard top it's not a real convertible, either it takes up all of your trunk space or you have to leave it at home), and a Hardtop Convertible is an Abomination Unto Nuggan.

And no one misses bias ply tires. They suck. Radials are much better for ride, traction and wear.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at July 06, 2013 11:34 PM (yh0zB)

"Hardtop Convertible" was the original name for the body type, and the early ones actually were convertible bodies fitted with a fixed metal roof. The result was a classy-looking car that mimicked the look of a convertible with the top up, and the windows down, but didn't have the maintenance issues associated with a folding top.

If a car has a "B" pillar, it ain't a hardtop. Sedans are not hardtops, but there are 4-door hardtops.

673 I have heard that some women can make a good living doing jumping jacks well into their later years. I also think tablets have some serious design flaws, we would have ended up with a deep space mission instead of a moon mission if the wankers who designed tablets had been in charge. (ask me what I think about tablets )

678 660 A scrub brush and some soap will take care of 90% of any smell issues. Most people with body odor problems have it because of other issues beyond sweating. Posted by: Colorado Alex at July 07, 2013 04:20 AM (lr3d7) That was lifted from an Occutard newsletter, wasn't it?

680 Now I'm awake.

I was going to make ribs tonight but got terribly sleepy around 2 PM. Tobe ready at 7 the ribs needed to go in the oven at 4 but I just couldn't get enough sleep to clear my head. Kept having weird dreams and waking up in a still addled state.

Most of that list of car features had me thinking, "Wasn't that long gone already?" I cannot remember the last time I saw crank windows in a recent;y produced model that wasn't some sort of specialty design. Some things took a lot longer than they should have to become standards. Suburu had an automatic hill braking system back in the 70s.

Has creativity in music died since I was a kid? I've noticed that most of the time when a movie is trying to have some sort of rousing anthem for a finale, they tend to go back to the disco era. The recent example that caught my notice was the Despicable Me sequel, which has genderless beings dredging up the Village People's 'YMCA,' a song about the organization's facilities being an ideal spot to meet gay sexual partners.

This is practically the theme song of the AIDS epidemic but now it's a bit of fun for a kids' movie.

Do such YMCA facilities even exist any more, where you could get a cheap room to stay overnight with communal hygiene facilities? It seems like they were already on the way out when I was a kid in the 70s. The only reason I knew they existed was from books and movies set in earlier eras. The YMCA in Valencia is more of a place for families and the elderly to have exercise classes and swim. I took my mother there this morning to do her workout while I walked several orbits of the adjoining park while listening to an audio book.

681 Ugly, ugly morning.
Looks like rain.

and every plot device has it's critics.
and every story has already been told, repeatedly
all the heroes have been debunked
all the villains rehabilitated
history revised

so at this point, what difference does it make?

682 The fireworks video is teh funny.....there are some really stupid people out there. 54 yo guy near here was killed when his 4" mortar display failed to go off....he picked it up and was digging on it w/a pocketknife to replace the fuse, holding it against his chest, when it went off. He died in the ambulance. Be careful out there. Try not to do stupid shit.

686 At an underground pyrotechnics event I attended a few times in the 90s, Desert Blast, the rules page was simple and only one page. But all of the rules were emphasized with the words "or we will shoot you."

687 Thanks for all of the replies about common core. I live in Waukesha County, WI and will read everything I can. I already found out the new principle signed the Walker recall so that tells you a lot. Thanks all.

688 My 63 Plymouth Valiant has no radio, no a/c, no power steering or power brakes, no electric window or a freaking windshield washer. I spray Windex on the windshield at stop lights. From the driver's seat. What it does have is a slant six engine and a push button auto. And of course, some rust. But hey, only 72K miles. Gets 17mpg in town going through all 3 gears with my foot in the tank. And another thing- I learned to roll a kayak in the YMCA pool years ago. I don't recall anybody like the villagepeople being there. Just us river trash.
