Nostalgia For the Middle Ages

Here Danial Hannan describes the opponents of fracking:

When I spoke in the European Parliament in support of fracking, most of the negative comments I received did not focus on specific safety concerns. Rather, they complained in general terms that fracking would 'poison the planet' or 'bleed Mother Earth' for no higher cause than 'greed'. What is meant here by 'greed' is the desire for material improvement that has driven every advance since the old stone age. 'Greed', in this sense, is why we still have teeth after the age of 30, why women no longer expect to die in childbirth, why we have coffee and computers and cathedrals. 'Greed' is why we have time to listen to Beethoven and go for country walks and play with our children. Cheaper energy, on any measure, improves our quality of life. But this is precisely what at least some Greens object to.

What they want, as they frankly admit, is decarbonisation, deindustrialisation and depopulation. They regard the various advances we've made since the old stone age - the coffee, the computers, the cathedrals - with regret. What society needs, they tell us, is not green consumerism, but less consumerism. Which is, of course, precisely what most Western countries have had since 2008. The crash brought about all the things that eco-warriors had been demanding: lower GDP, less consumption, a decline in international trade. Yet, oddly, when it happened, they didn't seem at all satisfied.

Actually what most of the Greens would like to see is a return to a Middle Ages lifestyle except with more recycling and public transportation (for other people of course since they alone can handle technology responsibly). And this idealization of a simple, unspoiled, non-technological way of life is nothing new - it goes all the way back to the Arcadianism of the 18th and 19th century.  But somehow the less pleasant aspects of Arcadia such as a hand-to-mouth existence and dying by age 45 plus seeing a third of your children die never quite made it into artists' depictions.

Remembering The Pax Romana

Pax Romana (Latin for "Roman peace" ) was the long period of relative peace and minimal expansion by military force experienced by the Roman Empire in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Since it was established by Caesar Augustus it is sometimes called Pax Augusta. Its span was about 207 years (27 BC to 180 AD).

The Roman legal system, which forms the basis of many Western court systems today, unified the administration of justice in the courts throughout the provinces. The Legions patrolled the borders with success, and though there were still many foreign wars, the internal empire was free from major invasion, piracy, or social disorder on any grand scale. The empire, wracked with civil war for the last century of the Republic and for years following the Pax Romana, was largely free of large-scale power disputes.

...Romans regarded peace not as an absence of war, but the rare situation that existed when all opponents had been beaten down and lost the ability to resist. Augustus' challenge was to persuade Romans that the prosperity they could achieve in the absence of warfare was better for the Empire than the potential wealth and honor acquired when fighting a risky war. Augustus succeeded by means of skillful propaganda. Subsequent emperors followed his lead, sometimes producing lavish ceremonies to close the Gates of Janus, issuing coins with Pax on the reverse, and patronizing literature extolling the benefits of the Pax Romana.

Never forget that peace (much less 'Roman peace') has always been the rare exception.

Quote of the Day

SOMEDAY "African-American" will be a racist slur, a term so unacceptable that any public personality who recklessly uses it in private will be disgraced and threatened with the loss of his livelihood in the same way the syrupy and dissembling cooking personality Paula Deen has been disgraced and threatened for using the word "nigger" in private. Nigger, black, colored, negro - they've all become unacceptable because sooner or later they have all become associated with facts that do-good, holier-than-thou, know-nothing whites wish to deny. Those facts are the laziness, immorality and criminality of significant numbers of blacks. "African American" will be eclipsed the more it is associated with reality. A new term will come into vogue, as "people of color" has come into use in recent years. It doesn't matter. Whatever it is, it will be discarded and become a racist slur as long as reality is denied and honesty is taboo.

"African-American" doesn't even mean African-American as my South African friend (who's not black but not white either) found out when he checked that box in graduate school.

Surviving a Riot

Well the best way is to not be there when the riot goes down, but if that fails make sure that you've got a gun. Also have your friends and neighbors go get their guns. The bandanas are optional.

Since When Did Women's Health = Abortion?

The "pro-choice" party is actually against choice except in one specific area.

But once you get beyond abortion, conservative public policies treat women like autonomous human beings capable of making their own choices - about health care or anything else. It's the abortion-rights extremists who boil down the vast range of issues and choices raised by the term "women's health" to a single issue: sexual reproduction, as if women were nothing more than breeders. And yet conservatives are the ones who're called sexists.

Hollywood's "New Abnormal"

This is the third independent thumbs up for Lynda Obst's new book, Sleepless in Hollywood: Tales from the New Abnormal in the Movie Business, I've seen so it's probably worth reading.

Obst explains the formula for 'The New Abnormal" thusly:

   1. You must have heard of the Title before; it must have preawareness.

   2. It must sell overseas.

   3. It should generate a Franchise and/ or Sequel (also a factor of 1 and 2).

And when you've got franchises and sequels, you have much less need for expensive, temperamental superstars.

How risk-averse and out of ideas is Hollywood? Well let this chart soak in for a bit.

Ms. Sunshine Eater Goes Back to Food

Apparently there's a whole group of people who believe they can subsist merely on sunshine and air or what they refer to cosmic micro-foods. And Naveena Shine, 65, is one of them. Because she wants to "save the planet from the utter destruction we are inflicting on it", she's switched over to sunshine-based feeding.

But after 47 days she's gone back to an evil non-cosmic carbon-based diet - not because she got hungry as shit mind you:

After 47 days of blogging and YouTubing about her experience "Living On Light," Shine announced that she would "conclude the experiment and begin the process of slowly moving back into eating normal food again."

For what reason, you ask? Because she lost too much weight? Because she reported feeling tired or dizzy, and vomited when drinking water? Because "Living On Light" might have been a "slow starvation?" No. Because she ran out of money and could no longer afford to live like a plant (which seems to me to be the most inexpensive of lifestyles).

"The overt reason," she wrote on her blog and accompanying video, "is that on that day the phones and internet will be cut off and I have nothing to pay for the space I am in . There is nothing like the black and white clarity of money for bringing important messages into our lives."

1 Alec Baldwin, More Equal than Others Alec Baldwin has yet again stirred a bit of controversy by going off on an anti-homosexual tirade. One would think that LGBTQ groups would condemn Baldwin, but instead they wrote him an open love letter letting him know that it was all spiffy. The reason Baldwin get a pass is because he is an otherwise loyal soldier for the left. The more useful people are to the leftist cause, the more leeway they get. Just compare Baldwin with Mel Gibson who was openly condemned when he went on an anti-Semitic rant after being pulled over for drunk driving. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=2563

I'm going with the latter. CS Lewis had a quote about robber barons' cupidity being, at least, satiable, once the baron had got all he wanted. The progressives will never get what they want, because what they want is Paradise.

142 Yeah, I saw that Louisiana "literacy test" over the weekend. It was designed to fail anybody who actually had to take it. It's nearly impossible to pass it. Of course, the election authorities got to choose who had to take it (hint: blacks). That test was not administered in good faith. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with a test that actually does try to measure that a voter has an understanding of our system of government, and which is administered fairly to every potential voter. One single question: "Name the three branches of government" would probably weed out 20% of today's voters.

203 The sad thing about this trans-gendered B.S. is that you will be punished for disagreeing with them, and be label an oppressor for simply calling them what they are. If a child refuses to call a boy a girl, they are labeled a bully and punished or even subject to psychotherapy. If a worker refuses to call a man a woman, they are fired for creating a "hostile work environment" and then sued. If an employer refuses to call a man a woman, or a boy a girl, they are sued and prosecuted for civil rights violations. The left has already dropped the mask of tolerance, and instead redefined the word to mean something quite antithetical. I've already ranted a bunch about it here: http://politicalhat.com/tag/gender/ If someone tells me that I must espouse an opinion that is contrary to reality, I shall simply reply: "I will, then, be a toad."

I'm always amused that we have "the Dark Ages" when from the Byzantine perspective little changed after the fall of the Western Empire. They did have to deal with rampaging Muslim hordes...but since they failed a Dark Age in the East it did not make...

Even in the West it didn't change all that much - the culture of the Late Empire didn't just disappear, and a lot of folks (and not just those living in Italy) still considered themselves "Roman" well into the sixth century, albeit Romans who happened to have German overlords at the moment. About the only place where the Roman culture really disappeared was in Britain, and even there not everything disappeared.

Basically the idea is that he only wants to have sex with people he likes (generally that's the way it works son ), but if he likes someone, their gender isn't important. Riiiiight. He hasn't put this into practice yet, but I think he's about to try. He's going to be disappointed, that's just not how people are wired. What is it about all of these trendy, "enlightened" (spit), bullshit sex "revelations" that insists on flying in the face of the way folks just are? I haven't said much to him, figuring that the more I tell him he's being stupid the harder he'll hold on to being stupid, but damn, who came up with that one? Oh well, he'll learn his lesson. Eventually. I hope. *** Demi-sexual? that sounds an awful lot like bi-sexual with a nicer label. Best of luck to you and your family. Ask for God's guidance.

Everybody in the crowd was all "ooh", "ahhh", "wow". I spoke up and said, hey, that's obviously total bullshit. You'll die in days without water and weeks without food. Everybody in the group got angry with me. Angry because I stood up for the controversial stand that if you don't drink water and eat food you'll quickly die. The bold stand that the human body requires food and water. I was stunned. I figured everybody else would side with me at laughing at this comically stupid idea. 317 Well TR; the boy has been craving a new pistol for some time (so have I, but I digress) so I went looking for either a .357 or a .45 Rock Island Armory has a M1911A1 chambered in .45 for about $500 so I scooped one up. Took it home, filed stripped and cleaned the cosmoline off. Oiled it up and took it to the range. It will shoot tight groups with just the plain old black sights and it had no problems feeding, extracting or locking back after the last round. Crisp, positive action and a very easy to operate ambidextrous thumb safety. And a VERY light trigger. Feels hefty but not heavy in the hand. Shot 150 rounds and brought it home to field strip and inspect. Only a slight metal to metal wear in the form of very light 'polishing' at the breech-slide end of the barrel. The manufacturer says it has a recommended break in of 500 rounds. The Cranky Gurl loves it so her and the boy can fight over it. Its a great entry level .45 so far. Gonna shoot another 200 through it this next weekend.

Posted by: ConservativeMonster at July 01, 2013 11:05 PM (/g8rp) The problem is that because the left can't avoid the obvious fact that biologically men and women are different, they created the idea of "gender," where only those clear physical differences involved reproductive organs had to do with biological sex, and that everything else was simply a "social construct" and product of the "kyriarchy" and thus must be condemned and fought against. The left really and truly believes that human nature is just a "social construct" and that once they've remolded humanity, then their socialist utopias will come true. You see, the left doesn't blame their ideology or themselves, it is humanity that is flawed and must be changed... What is frightening is that they have so grabbed the hold of education, including higher education, that we have a plethora of social "scientists" who declare this rubbish to be absolute scientific truth and that the only reason people would disagree with them is if they were mouth-breathing troglodyte H8ers... and H8ers ain't got no rights... That seems like making friends with someone would create some very confusing emotions.

414 Can't tell you how many times I've heard or read from the hippies that the goal is to reduce or eliminate (seriously) humanity. Most of them just want to get rid of everyone who won't play along. A lot of those aren't even willing to confront the reality of their ideas, they just have a vague fuzzy goal and the part in the middle where you murder the majority of humans is something they don't express or think about clearly. Boy do you get mad when you make them focus on the reality of it, though.

Part of the problem we face is that the government is so mammoth that any attempt to cut any part of it leads to the State Media claiming we are going to end meat inspections and allow Bhopal type plants in nursery schools....even if we are trying to cut Cowboy Poetry and Obama vacations... So, instead of having this pool of trillions of dollars the government can spend on whatever it wants, what if we had specific taxes ties to specific expenditures? One way to organize would be to take the income and corporate taxes and divide them by the different cabinet level offices. Instead of having one tax rate, you'd have a rate for the DoD, DoE, etc. If the government wants to spend more on the DoE they would need to raise the DoE tax rate - no deficit spending allowed... I would imagine something like this would have to be tried at the state level since we've got Johnny "Yes Sir Barry" Boehner leading our supposed side at the federal level.

I just saw the worst movie ever.  Ever.

I know Alex the Chick likes her some Channing Tatum but dayum, the movie White House Down is awful.  by the end of the film you are literally begging them to bomb the White House so the movie would be over.  Spoilers below.

Channing Tatum is a former military loser who cannot keep a job so of course he gets a job with the Capitol Police as the body guard of the Speaker of the House.  It turns out, he saved the Speaker's son in Afghanistan.  The Speaker is a Republican

The President is Jamie Fox, modeled very closely after the JEF, only more hood.  So there are references to Nicorette gum cause POTUS is trying to quit, and Air Jordan tennis shoes.  POTUS has just announced a plan to pull all US military assets out of the ME, and he is trying to broker some epic ME peace agreement, but he isn't getting much cooperation from anyone.  Poor him.

Anyhoo turns out Channing Tatum wants to work for the Secret Service and guard the POTUS, but Maggie Gyllenhaal knew him as a party boy in college and says no.  Then Tatum sulks away and takes his wise cracking daughter on a White House Tour.  And terrorists attack the White House.

Turns out the Head of the Secret Service is a grieving father whose Marine son died in some covert mission.  And he is dying of cancer.  So he decides to attack the White House, hold POTUS hostage and steal the nuclear football so he can turn Iran into glass.

Yes folks, Iran is the victim in this film.  The Speaker of the House is helping him because he is a Republican and in the pocket of the military industrial complex and just want to line their pockets with gold.  Oh and he fired a missile at Air Force One which was carrying the Veep at the time, so he could be POTUS (they thought Jamie Fox was dead).

Channing Tatum saves the day, exposes the plot, saves POTUS (Fox) and finally wins the heart of his sullen daughter (who worships POTUS Fox).  At the end of the film, they fly off in Marine 1 and buzz the Lincoln Memorial, while world leaders call in to say they are all behind the wonderful peace deal in the ME, even Iran!!!  Tatum then jokes that if he keeps this up, he is gonna have to vote for POTUS Fox next time!

Could have told you that.  The movie is Roland Emmerich's love letter to Obama obviously.  That shit head has an inverse of what Michael Bay does.

In Independence Day his Democrat President is a war hero.  In The Day After Tomorrow his Bush stand in is an idiot and the Vice President is the one running the show.

Look at how Michael Bay handles Bush and Obama Admins in the Transformers movies.  He just does a turned up to 11 caricature.  Transformers the government is under attack and doesn't know who so they're mobilizing everything and looking at China and Iran being ready to go full on WW3.  In the other Transformers movies with Obama the government is a bunch of cowardly appeasing pussies willing to hand over a US citizen in the hopes of appeasing the Decepticons.  Liberals of course threw a little bitchy fit about that portrayal because they didn't like how close to the truth it rang.

497 Cthulhu, trust me, it's not that. Really. Today was my final day of forced southern Alberta tourism before flying home tomorrow, and so I went to......Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump. Blackfoot Indians would carefully....carefully...herd a herd of buffalo towards a cliff and then stampeded them off. Lots and lots of careful prep went into the hunt with most of the tribe involved. The site is named after one Indian who wanted to observe the hunt from the bottom off the cliff. His name was Little Biden. Guess what happened to his head? I liked it, the plains Indians were really clever at harvesting buffalo by the gross ton, it takes a LOT of preserved meat to last the winter in a teepee on the Alberta plains. I love the technology utilized by "primitive" peoples. Ask my wife, I have a saying: People are so damn smart.....and they always have been. Just because "primitive" technology doesn't use electricity or mechanical force multipliers doesn't mean that it isn't smarter than hell. I think a lot of "modern" people forget that. I'd love to drop all of our modern Gaia worshiping ecotards smack in the middle of the Great Plains in about AD 700. I doubt any of them would last more than a month or so, even if you guaranteed they wouldn't be attacked by indigenous folks.

Allahpundit is cheerleading the suicide of the GOP.  The democrats are about to be rewarded for 27 years of undermining border security.  I hope when MS13 kills enough innocent Americans some grieving family takes it out on the correct people.

My personal moment of clarity has arrived, I have a total hatred for the GOP sellouts eclipsing even my hatred of Democrats.

Occupy Wall Street may have gotten one thing correct, the Chamber of Commerce may need redecorated.

In the end we are the weakest country on Earth, democrats happily throw open the city gates to allow the Greeks to raze Troy.

I wasn't a big fan of the quote, but I think I see the point of it -- which could use a little honesty out there.

If I'm reading it correctly, it's saying that the modern world's reaction to having a named group linked with bad behavior is to forbid the utterance of the name -- not to modify the behavior or disassociate the group from it.

In my lifetime, I've seen this done a number of times -- socialist, liberal, progressive....negro, black, African-American....hippie, counterculture, dropout....at some point, those were all self-identifiers infused with pride -- now they're forbidden relics of the denied past.

And, no matter how much we hope the group cleans up its act under its current name -- and the faster, the better -- it's more likely that people will continue to misbehave and wear out yet another label.

Where the writer gets into trouble is in the sentence: "Those facts are the laziness, immorality and criminality of significant numbers of blacks." I'm not at all comfortable with it, and I'm not sure it's terribly on point -- because it could be better focused as "Those facts are the public empowerment and advancement of lazy, immoral, and criminal blacks as examples of their people -- such as Eric Holder, Charlie Rangel, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton." Fact is, the huge majority of the blacks I've ever dealt with have been just like dealing with anyone else -- which, yeah, includes the occasional lazy, immoral, and criminal. But the public face of caucasians at least pretend to not be in-your-face race-baiting assholes.

563 I'm dying for anyone to explain amnesty to me as a sensible play for pro gun Americans....

The Mexicans that walk and swim here are generally pro-gun (rural); those that over stay their visas are not (urban, educated elite).  If the amnesty is biased towards the farm workers and away from the elite - then you could consider it pro-gun.  Particularly silver inlaid .38Supers with Jaguar themes.

Years and years ago, I came up with a novel treatment for the usual "fucked-up kid" syndrome that didn't involve drugs, didn't involve therapy, cost very little, and would have nearly zero recidivism.

You show up at 3 am, scoop the kid up in his/her bathrobe, blindfold them, fly for about a day, strap a parachute on, take the blindfold off and point to the rip cords, and drop 'em over upland New Guinea [some of the Amazon basin would work as well].

It's not like it's intrinsically hostile to human existence, like Antarctica, midocean, or the Sahara desert; it's not like there'll be imminent danger like the carnivores of Africa or Australian crocodiles; there's lots of tree-cover, so there needn't be sunburn....but worrying about gender identity would immediately assume its proper priority, as would general situational awareness.

Clear-thinking would be immediately reinforced, assuming that the subject deduced that port cities inevitably grew where rivers met oceans, and trade cities inevitably were found where river crossings or junctions occur.

Navigating the bureaucracy needed to get back to the US would clarify the differences between natural challenges and those that are human-created. In short, you'd have a highly-effective, intensely rational, very alert, and clearly prioritized person after this "therapy".

Of course, there is the small issue of them wanting to kill you.....

Where, here, we worry about odd skills like changing toner, 10-key by touch, and filing, the skills required there included proper use of paperweights (it's always sweltering, so there are fans blowing all the time. If it isn't second-nature to use paperweights properly, all your stuff gets scrambled downwind) and understanding cooling (if there's a prevailing wind from the East, there will be a large sheet of cloth hung in front of the east window that is periodically doused with water -- sort of like an unwrapped swamp-cooler).

649 Quick question: I saw (somewhere) yesterday the Reggie Love tweeted: "I'm in Africa!!" Has that been confirmed? I'm not on Twitter. (The full tweet should have been; "I'm in Africa, and Barrack is in me!!"

650 Your grasp of the Middle Ages is grossly inaccurate. Typical, but just a fantasy nonetheless. From the 11th C on, there was a lot of technological innovation, largely because they didn't believe in slavery. And there were the same kinds of complaints about it as we see today.

You really should read something about the subject, not based on H G Wells. This ignorance has lasted long enough.

651 The thing about language is words always come to mean what they are used to describe.  It works forwards and reverse in terms of niceness and not-niceness.

You can soften and euphemize and attempt to control language with "new" or  neutral or presently nice words.  Meaning,  including your own associations and those of others, will get that word or phrase in the end.
