The New Puritans - When Did Liberals Become So Uptight?
Well it turns out that immanentizing the eschaton during your kids' play-dates is like stressful and hard.
The Puritan parents I encounter are nearly all liberals, and they represent the persistence of two unfortunate tendencies liberals have inherited from the Puritans, queered along the way by Progressive-era reformers. The first is the fun-smothering tendency of Progressive-era moral uplift, the tendency that brought us Prohibition and the first laws proscribing opiates and narcotics. (Today, we try to ban large cups of soda.) The second is an interest in hygiene that could be quite salutary-as when reformers pushed clean water and other public-health measures-but could also fetishize symbolic, pernicious forms of sanitation and purity, as in Margaret Sanger's support for eugenics.
Reason #7 For Not Taking Tactical Advice from High Functioning Tards
A man in Vancouver, Washington has been arrested for taking the advice of Vice President Joe Biden and blasting away with his gun at his home to scare off intruders.
"I did what Joe Biden told me to do," Jeffrey Barton, 52, told a local TV station. "I went outside and fired my shotgun in the air." Barton pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one count of of illegal aiming or discharging a firearm
Maybe they should reach out to OCP and reconsider the merits of Delta City.
The Hidden Assumption Among Trayvon Supporters
That violence is perfectly acceptable if you think you've been dissed.
I have noticed over the last week or so that a noticeable percentage of the group of the people who disagree with Zimmerman being acquitted.seem to be arguing from a perspective which views physical violence as acceptable or even desirable unless a weapon is involved. I have begun to consistently see variations of this viewpoint in enough places to see it as a body of thought on this subject. Usually, it features the ideas:
1) Hitting people is a perfectly reasonable response to a non-physical confrontation, ie someone watching you, or asking you what you're doing or following you briefly
2) If you do these things, you have "started" a fight and while the other party is within their right to beat you, you are not allowed to use lethal force to defend yourself
I have noticed a consistent anti-gun viewpoint that tends to accompany this thought, but it comes with a bizarre pro-violence attitude that I have not typically noticed with most anti-gun people.
One of the most egregious cases of racism, murder, and systemic injustice in the last century was the killing of Emmett Till in Mississippi in 1955. Recently a lot of people have compared the death of Trayvon Martin to Till's case but when you look at the details there really is no comparison.
Till's case was horrific and what racial injustice looks like - the Zimmerman case is not.
On August 24, 1955, Emmett Till and a group of teenagers entered Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market to buy refreshments. What exactly transpired inside the grocery store that afternoon will never be known. Till purchased bubble gum, and some of the kids with him would later report that he either whistled at, flirted with, or touched the hand of the store's white female clerk-and wife of the owner-Carolyn Bryant.
Four days later, at approximately 2:30 in the morning on August 28, 1955, Roy Bryant, Carolyn's husband, and his half brother J.W. Milam kidnapped Till from Moses Wright's home. They then beat the teenager brutally, dragged him to the bank of the Tallahatchie River, shot him in the head, tied him with barbed wire to a large metal fan and shoved his mutilated body into the water. Moses Wright reported Till's disappearance to the local authorities, and three days later his corpse was pulled out of the river. Till's face was mutilated beyond recognition, and Wright only managed to positively identify him by the ring on his finger, engraved with his father's initials, L.T.

I assume because they realized whatever harm they may have suffered from having 'Wee To Lo' as a pilot pales in comparison to the fact that their actual pilots apparently flew their plane into the ground.

For more than 800 years, and up until sometime in 1994, it was perfectly legal and encouraged in the USA for whites to whip and beat African-Americans.
It's only fair that whites (and 'almost white' people) willingly accept a few smackdowns...to atone for their sins.

"In October 2011, the attorney general quietly put in force two policies that have made the nation far more vulnerable to homegrown terrorism.
For one, he set up a special review committee to curb mosque investigations, classifying the names of the reviewers, who reportedly may include outside parties.
Also that month he ordered a review of all FBI counterterrorist training manuals “to identify and correct any material that may be construed as offensive to someone of the Islamic faith,” according to a directive sent to all FBI field offices."

I live next door to a Scientology Community Center, that is PARTNERS with the Nation of Islam.
----------
They're WHAT!?
Every time I think I can't dislike the Scientologists more...
They recently moved their center into a much larger space just down the street from where I work. Now I have to dodge them every day when I step outside on my lunch break. Snarling at them hasn't seemed to make an impact so far, unfortunately.

Well, that's one of the hidden assumptions. There are others.
Rachel Jeantel has told about seven or eight different contradictory stories (stupid people don't lie well because they don't really grasp the concept of contradiction, and man, is she stupid). She's done some of this under oath, and admitted under oath to changing her versions around, which leads one to wonder when, exactly, she's going to be brought up on perjury charges.
But one of those stories from her is to the effect that Martin thought that Zimmerman was a fag who was trying to cruise him, and Martin thus went back to do some good old-fashioned red-blooded gay bashing.
Oh, but wait. Per the Piers Morgan interview with Jeantel, she was at pains to point out that it wouldn't have been a "bashing". It would have been an "ass whooping" instead. These are, she insists, _entirely_ different things.
So I need to go find some members of the LGBTQIAXYZLMNOP community, or whatever the hell it's called these days, and let them know that if I spot a gay man getting beaten into bloodsoaked unrecognizability by a black teen, then I'm going to just walk on past and not interfere.
Because it's not gay-bashing. It's just an "ass whooping". Which is apparently now a fully politically correct and leftist-approved procedure when carried out by black teens. I do wonder what the LGBTwhatever crowd will have to say about that.

So the NSFW type will have to wait until well lad's in school or 47...
My point is that even within direct bloodlines there are genetic expressions of divergent ethnical expressions...
now add in the interaction of a melting pot of DNA donors and voila....
types and subtypes and purestrains...
I guess one of the things I find so refreshing for the most part about Brazilians is that while they are aware of appearance they sincerely do try to reject the notion that they are defined by such.
http://tinyurl.com/kjomdmo
I suspect this is because the majority Branca population never weaponized the manumitted slave class much until the advent of socialism.
At any rate, they intermarry if inclined or don't and largely who cares?
Now that is not to say that despite those lovely lasses it is paradise, there is a drive amongst some in the darker hues to imply that the paler Brazilians "make too much money"...
guess what political philosophy they're slinging?
Exactly....
the issue is not ethic it is moral.....
how much of another person's honest gain is one entitled to "because?"
and there we sit....
I find the Pardos with hazel or green eyes to be amongst the prettiest human beings on Earth and they are as rendered an eclectic blend of Portugal, Aboriginal Native, often with a touch of African....
my point in that is that I find the placing of ethical constructs to be inspired or caused by genetic ones to be as insane as pretending that an Alsatian or a Great Dane are unable to breed if of opposite genders and inclined or one is by predestination a noble beast and the other ignoble.
Thanks for your indulgence.

----------
Sadly, too many people around. They roam the busiest street in the city, in the busiest part of the city, during the busiest time of day, shoving small cards (presumably for their "free personality tests") in front of passersby without identifying themselves, knowing that most people will take first and ask questions later when free stuff is involved. If I were to break out the pepper spray, then there would probably be collateral damage on innocent pedestrians who happen to be walking past...

I don't get how some people can't tell when Ace gets set off and insist on arguing the issue with him over and over?
--------
For one of them, the final post came across as a bit of a martyr post. Ace had already said "Don't post on this," the guy made a somewhat obnoxious "I wonder how long he means because he didn't say permanent?" response, and Ace then notified the individual that it was now permanent.
I think it's that little thing in everyone that wants to make other people know just how aggrieved we are... even when making everyone else know how aggrieved we are is just going to annoy everyone else.

Brazil is perhaps the most ethnically diverse nation of multiple expressions on Earth and it is ancillary to the point and some people's reflections and feeling cornered on the matter.
I was posting an eclectic blend of the multiple expressions of Brazilian femininity not to preach but to highlight the magnificent GENUINE diversity in genetic expression the human race is capable of.
We are a lonely species in a large large universe and it pains me there are those who as Ace alluded to and I fear in my darker hours I am devolving to who look first to skin and not to the spark in the eyes and the content of the heart.

And I've known thugs and ne'er-do-wells. They come in every color and they shit where they live and they don't deserve one ounce of respect. Part of why Locke and Smith are waning along with the other icons of natural law is that for better or worse it has been successfully cast as a tool en perpetual for White Privvy....
One of my notions is to buy copies of his work to simply hand out at random and to give to others of like mind to do so...

From local CBS station in Houston...
TOMBALL, Tex. (CBS Houston) – Ron Kelly is a retired Army veteran. He used to fire tanks, cannons, and machine guns while fighting for the United States.
However, when he applied to the FBI for the right to purchase a .22-caliber rifle from Wal-Mart, the FBI denied him, citing a minor drug possession conviction back in 1971.
Kelly was still in high school at the time, and was reportedly sentenced to just one year probation. Two years later, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.
“I went on to serve 20 years,” Kelly told the newspaper Stars & Stripes. “I had a top-secret clearance. It is amazing that they won’t let buy a gun for a misdemeanor 42 years ago.”
He added, “I am ashamed of the way my government has treated me.”

That's not even the point. None of us chose where we were born, and anyone of any race born in the U.S. has pretty much won the genetic lottery as far as place of birth goes. (Your parents as individuals may be so horrible they cancel out those advantages, but that has little or nothing to do with your race.)
The average black American's great-great-great-grandparents (give or take a few generations) arrived here as slaves in miserable circumstances, and the average white American's great-great-great-grandparents (ditto on the proviso) came here by choice and in many cases could change their minds and go back whenever they wanted, and sometimes did. But what does that have to do with us? The fact that my great-great-great-grandparents or (on my father's side) grandparents chose to immigrate doesn't mean that I chose to be born here, any more than someone whose ancestors (whether slaves or indentured servants or transported criminals or minors dragged along unwillingly by parents) came unwillingly. Why should it make any difference how long-dead ancestors we never met got to this country?

Well Cochran just opened himself up to the spambots.
'Sup Rons and 'ettes.
I got some mildly good news tonight. They're considering me for a part time position back in my academic department helping teach some classes, which is good, because what I need is some more constant income for a little while I make progress on the degree. A couple hundred a week would more than offset the current budget crunch, get us back to saving and moving forward with life. I say "considering" because my teaching skill set is about as developed as Obama's governing experience...during his first run for president. (What can I say, I bounce from Lab group to lab group, teaching is for pikers who can't write a grant.)
Anyway. since the Mrs. is making comments that put me as Stay at Home dad when the time comes, temporary is more than fine.
Sure I'd love the true financial security that comes with taking back an old biology job in industry, but I haven't had so much as a nibble there yet, plus it really doesn't do much for my resume down the road (this does...arguably...maybe.)

"We can do little for the interest of mankind at large. To this interest, however, all other interests are subordinate. The noblest principle in our nature is the regard to general justice and that good-will which embraces all the world. I have already observed this, but it cannot be too often repeated. Though our immediate attention must be employed in promoting our own interest and that of our nearest connexions, yet we must remember that a narrower interest ought always to give way to a more extensive interest. In pursuing particularly the interest of our country we ought to carry our views beyond it. We should love it ardently but not exclusively. We ought to seek its good, by all the means that our different circumstances and abilities will allow, <b>but at the same time we ought to consider ourselves as citizens of the world...</b>"

Dude, you are on a roll tonight with the pics. If Brazil wasn't so crime infested, I would probably be on a plane right now.
With the Locke thing, I think the erosion of natural law is a huge problem. Again, this is what happens when we take God/religion out of the public square. How can you have inalienable rights endowed by our creator if you don't believe in a creator, or at the very least, won't talk about Him in a public place?
As for NL and white privilege, that's just stupid. I know libs are stupid, but their argument is based totally on guilt by association. The actual ideas inherent to NL were used to great effect to end slavery/racism. You know the veil is slipping when libs resort to that one.

Aye,
Thanks, any nibble is a good nibble these days. I currently bamboozled an old boss into 40 hours of contract work at $15/hour (but it's for the university as a "student worker" so I get to skate on some of the FICA, which means it works out to a bit more.)
Which is a good start. If I can set myself up for something similar for 20 hours a week for 4 months, I'd be in relatively good shape
. (Like I said though, I could walk in, be all swagger, they see my pitiful attempt at a new bear and say "you look like a hobo, you're out." Or they could say "we actually remember you teaching it was a disaster, we changed our minds."*)
*OK, in my defense, the very first thing I taught was EndNote software, designed the lesson from scratch myself. It went well, but every year they give me less and less time to work on the lesson plan, and every year a new version comes out that changes quite a bit. Also, it's software, sometimes I find out my lesson was wrong and has to be corrected. Last year I got 48 hours notice. So yeah, the lesson sucked balls. I suspect this year I'll get less than a day, and next year either I'll walk in and they'll be like "good, teach" or I'll find out I taught a session after it's over.

Savage.
Ethanol is unbelievably hydrophilic, and benefits from that relationship with water. Chilling it to zero F simply decreases its affinity for water, and decreases the wonderful mouth-feel of a shaken vodka/gin drink.
Rest assured I will put you to sleep with a weekend post about this topic.

Oakland County, just north of Detroit (Wayne County) is one of the richest (per capita) counties in the US. The auto makers pulled a lot out of Detroit and Flint and other places because the government had gone to .....a bad place, as governments are wont to go sometimes. This is a mystery to some people.
People think that the "UAW" wrecked Detroit. I know I read that comment here somewhere tonight. Why did the UAW not wreck a lot of the very prosperous suburbs of Detroit where there are now today, still a lot of automobile manufacturing jobs?
Pittsburgh is/was a very strong union town, yet, it is not wrecked.

Come now.
You're average freezer only hits -20C. Well above the threshold for freezing the water in the vodka due to it's mixing with the ethanol. Furthermore the addition of other ingredients (presumably at room temp) and shaking will warm it back up.
You're saying it has that much of an effect? Maybe my chemistry is just a bit rusty, but...really?

Think back to physical chemistry. The colder the ethanol is, the less hydrophilic it will be, thus the less H20 it will absorb.
The mouth feel is a function of that H20 absorption.

sven - The qualification "If I were King of the World" is an important one. It is a fantastical proposition, of course, but it implies not simply power, but more importantly, responsibility. In that sense, I believe that my assessment (and fantastical actions) would not be a matter of prejudice, or bias, or judgement, but rather the duty incumbent upon me.

How bad is it (on so many levels) when a teenage boy's mom tries to utilize Craigslist to get her son laid?
'Take my son's virginity and I'll buy you a car': Scheming mom posts outrageous Craigslist ad looking for girl to seduce and deflower her Harvard-bound son
Crass.
In the past parents would have found some sweet daughter of a friend of the family and the parents would have conspired to make the kids spend time together. Or at worse, Mom works out a deal, and her son finds himself doing "yard-work" with the older middle-aged widow down the street.

you find out his housekeeper is really his mother, surgeon being the product of an affair she had with her employer. Employer keeps the boy who becomes the surgeon, and maid basically raises him.
Maid had another child with a servant and gives him up. Discarded son comes back years later and has an affair with the wife of surgeon half brother. Wife and discarded son plan to run away together, but get in the firey disfiguring car crash. Years after that, discarded son breaks in to surgeon half brother's house and sees the gal surgeon has been experimenting on. Discarded brother thinks it his half brothers wife (his lover), and rapes her. Surgeon brother catches him in the act and kills him

after the rape by half brother, surgeon comforts gal he is experimenting on and tries to have sex with her. She says she is too sore. They both dream about a wedding. Surgeon's daughter, who saw her mother commit suicide, has sex with a guy at a wedding, freaks out for no apparent reason and screams, dude slaps her and she passes out. When she wakes up she thinks surgeon father raped her (he did not).
Gal being experimented on has a dream that the dude having sex with the crazy daughter gets mowed down by the surgeon and kept captive in a dungeon
you find out that surgeon runs down and kidnaps the guy who had sex with his daughter, does sex reassignment surgery on him, loads of plastic surgery too, and falls in love with him/her.

It was so good, though. The best society ever on the planet. Too bad human nature had to fuck it all up, even as near-perfect as the founders laid it out. I wonder what pivotal moment, if we could go back in time, and done things differently, would have preserved it.
One idea:
The inability to deal adequately (i.e., ban or phase out peacefully) with slavery, right at the beginning. No slavery, no Civil War, states retain more of their independence, government can't grow so much.
The real reason for the decline is more subtle, I think. The whole idea of the US depends on individuals and small communities being able to run themselves without outside intervention. That pretty much requites a shared sense of morality - de Tocqueville pointed out that in the US people considered a wider range of opinion to be normal but were much more ferocious in attacking those who strayed outside of accepted boundaries than people in Europe. As our shared sense of morality inherited from Christianity and Judaism (not everyone was a Christian, but the paradigm of right and wrong persisted even when the religious beliefs were absent) waned in the later part of the 19th century, people became less able to regulate themselves to the satisfaction of their neighbors, and resulted in laws being passed were before custom and morality had done the job. Of course, as more laws were passed, the role of the government changed and it got bigger and bigger.

Progressive politicians -- turn everything of value into redistributable crap, redistribute it to people who don't value it 'cause they haven't earned it and don't understand it, ends up with feel-good promises about valueless assets.
Cthulhu cultists -- disregard value, expose sentient beings to chaos of interdimensional existence, cause insanity and behavior destructive to self and others, associated creatures may occasionally devour someone alive. Ends up with valuable assets unclaimed by crazy/eaten owners.

There are a couple of places where I could see the Founders could have done better. As prime example, let me quote the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Wouldn't that read a whole lot better if it continued with "....or the whole damned lot of them get shitcanned, banned from elective office for life, and all their works consigned to perdition."?
How 'bout the Second Amendment, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Wouldn't that be nicely finished with "....since those actors who infringe this right substantively declare themselves outlaws, to be shot like rabid dogs in the street."?
The Constitution suffers from a severe lack of "or else" clauses, which just begs would-be authoritarians to snuggle up to their limitations sideways, subtly, to try to subvert them. For the most part, these are bright red flashing neon lines, not "suggestions", but the lack of effective punishment constitutes an attractive nuisance to the sort of person that pursues political office. Frankly, I wouldn't mind if every other phrase in Article I read "....or we take the current batch of assholes out to a field and string 'em up."

Posted by: Kill the Bastards at July 19, 2013 01:58 AM (Vk2pI)
Not exactly -- more like a "kill the bastards if they fuck this up". A large part of the problem is that the people drafting the Constitution had just fought a revolution, and had seen the "Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union" go foom -- so they figured that they needn't go into too many details about "or else" 'cause they could just revolt or create a third document. A couple of generations afterward, that sort of thing could be nastier, bloodier, and more horrific than they could begin to imagine (cf 1861-1865). And if revolting or creating another document are off the table, those bright lines really need some TEETH.

If my history is correct. The Romans has a clause whereby Senators who pissed of the constituency could be killed. Rome ended up failing regardless though.
Posted by: UWP at July 19, 2013 02:16 AM (r98SZ)
The problem is that constituencies can be bribed or misinformed. If I were looking for a second criticism of the US Constitution, I'd probably go to the bicameral legislature.
Supposedly, we have the People's House (representing population) and the States' Senate (representing......er.....what exactly? And that what changed into what what with the 17th Amendment?). But who represents the people who are supposed to pay for it all? Who ensures that we get value for our dollar? So I'd go to a tricameral legislature -- a House of Representatives based on headcount; a Convention of Commerce based on income get; and a Senate of Statesmen based on State governments. Just as today, all revenue bills must originate in the House, all functionaries and treaties must be approved by the Senate, but all regulations should be approved by the CoC. What's more, all questions of state/Federal jurisdiction should be decided by the Senate -- which, as the founders intended, should be appointed by States.
The problem really arises because the 17th amendment "solved" the wrong issue....thereby making things worse [sound familiar?]. Once there was a tax on incomes (not necessarily the greatest idea.....), the path was laid to the populace voting themselves bread and circuses.

cthulhu,
They solved that by limiting voting to male property owners. You had to have skin in the game to vote. I think it can be expanded beyond that, but the basic idea is correct. Strange as it may sound, the death of the Republic is due in large part to universal suffrage.
Posted by: Weirddave at July 19, 2013 02:56 AM (aH+zP)
You've got 90% there, IMHO, but you're missing a piece. The Constitution balanced interests, in writing, not subject to arbitrary change. Suffrage -- must less universal suffrage, was just one of the interests. Under the Founders' scheme, the people had an explicit voice in governance -- a somewhat radical view at the time -- but were also explicitly checked by laws of the states.

not entirely. if borrowing produces an actual tangible income producing asset it can be a benefit to a future person, not a detriment --- given a host of details such as proper maintenance, a plan for depletion, salvage value, etc.

Borrowing with interest is the very definition of the current against the future. Anticipated revenues and costs are merely icing on the cake.

the problem is that will is mismatched -- those that are flexing their will in an open way are not being matched by a flexing of will by those that they intend to harm.
for example, suppose that at the moment zimmerman became a marked man solely for political purposes every federal courthouse and justice dept office building was surrounded by ordinary citizens for one day -- a very clear message about who really has will would be sent -- and things would quickly change.
you can rest assured that no written contract will be valid as long as meek acceptance is the order of the day -- no matter how well that contract is drafted. without enforcement it is moot.

That's it in a nutshell. You have a generation that didn't save squat, that's been promised the stars and the moon from folks in the future, half of which haven't even been born...

change it from money to time ---
suppose I have 1000 people picking a harvest at 3 bushels per person day.
suppose I borrow 6000 person days, and build a harvester with a 20 year life that picks the harvest at 2000 bushels per day.
do the math, in the end, unless the rates are outrageously usurious the borrowing generates more wealth, not less, even with the cost of interest.
now conversely, suppose I borrow that wealth and use it to pay welfare benefits. now, I am not only out the money, I am also out the compounding interest -- a loser with leverage -- the worst of all worlds.

The other hidden assumption: "No one really knows what happened that night."
It means Zimmerman's lying, despite the fact there is no proof of this.

I must be missing your point. You are not saying we should take everyone at their word when we find them holding a smoking gun and standing over a corpse are you?

I wasn't there and I didn't see it so reasonable doubt goes to the person who tells the tale. But, that does not mean that people should not be skeptical of tales told by somebody who just killed someone.
you might also note that the evidence also lines up that he grabbed trayvon by the hoodie with a plan to hold him long enough for the cops to arrive.
Why? Because there was witness testimony to hearing trayvon tell him to "get off" twice before any violence actually started. -- and no matter what I may think about that witness -- that was her testimony.
So, I am not going to be shocked by the concept that some people might assume that a person might lie to to save his own ass in a situation like that one. And that is all I was trying to say.

Why is it when someone wants to make an historical analogy its mostly based on ignorance and cliches? The term Puritan is used incorrectly. The Puritans of the 16th, 17th, and 18th always unfairly get the reputation of 19th century Christian Pietists, who were mostly products of the Anabapists and the Methodists. As a movement, the Puritans were not as rigid, self-rightous, or legalistic as 19th century Pietists or anyone in the PC movement.

Shorter and Pithier, it's PJ O'Rourke so, of course it would be:
"The modern liberal has more fears than a medieval peasant."
