A Guide to Your Choices

Actually modern liberalism includes quite a lot of what used to be unique to socialism. And I don't think modern paleo-cons are opposed to public education.

Quote of the Day

It's not fair for the cop to lose his job because he wore the mask. Now, if he'd banged Andy while wearing the mask then maybe that goes against office policy. The moral of the story is that you should generally not do anything a porn star suggests. They've made really bad life decisions.

Quote of the Day II

Politics has a math of its own. Whereas a scientifically minded person might see things this way: One person who says 2+2=5 is an idiot; two people who think 2+2=5 are two idiots; and a million people who think 2+2=5 are a whole lot of idiots - political math works differently. Let's work backwards: if a million people think 2+2=5, then they are not a million idiots, but a "constituency." If they are growing in number, they are also a "movement." And, if you were not only the first person to proclaim 2+2=5, but you were the first to persuade others, then you, my friend, are not an idiot, but a visionary.

What It's Like Being Kim Jong-Il's Sushi Chef

The man in the tracksuit invited Fujimoto back to make more sushi. Fujimoto didn't speak Korean, so he had a government-appointed interpreter with him at all times. At the end of the evening, a valet handed the interpreter an envelope.

"From Jang-gun-nim," the valet said.

Perhaps the reason Fujimoto hadn't known he'd been serving Kim Jong-il was because "no one ever called him by his real name," Fujimoto said. "Never."

The CFTC's 'Eddie Murphy' Rule

We have recommended banning using misappropriated government information to trade in the commodity markets. In the movie "Trading Places," starring Eddie Murphy, the Duke brothers intended to profit from trades in frozen concentrated orange juice futures contracts using an illicitly obtained and not yet public Department of Agriculture orange crop report. Characters played by Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd intercept the misappropriated report and trade on it to profit and ruin the Duke brothers. In real life, using such misappropriated government information actually is not illegal under our statute. To protect our markets, we have recommended what we call the "Eddie Murphy" rule to ban insider trading using nonpublic information misappropriated from a government source.

49 PS The Five-Seven is a great choice for Zim's current circumstances, since he probably can't carry a P90 everywhere. That would be better. The greater the chance that the threat is a mob, the more you want lots and lots of chances to put a stop to the threat. Unfortunately, a lot of People In High Places profit too readily from violence, so it will continue at a relatively higher rate than it otherwise would.

There are so many recent foreign immigrants, however, running around the Twin Cities that (a) public places look the the Star Wars bar, and (b) you truly risk life and limb sharing the public thoroughfares with so many who lacked the wheel (as well as other attainments of Civilization) in their recent homelands. So, you can get your sea urchin roe on scallops with sea vegetable gastrique, and walk outside the restaurant into downtown Mogadishu.

I don't really mind the states having some level of "safety net", it's just that it's fundamentally unstable due to human nature.

101 I don't think we will have a society we consider "civil" without a "safety net," though that term can be broad enough to be entirely private. The problem with the concept is "zero, one, infinity." http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?ZeroOneInfinityRule Basically any number of cases other than zero is arbitrary and therefore the "test" will constantly change and always be perceived as "unfair." The irony is that only a society that minimizes its support can be rich enough to maximize its support, at which point it becomes less rich. So, basically, sans "magic," the system is, as CM says, "unstable."

188 Forest fires are more the result of environmental idiots. Most of the Forest Service and Fire Department folks I've met are big supporters of a more active role in maintaining forests around human habitation. Posted by: Colorado Alex at July 21, 2013 10:29 PM (lr3d7) The environmental policies create more disastrous fires which can only be managed/controlled by more governmental agencies. A vicious cycle taking away more of our ability to take care of ourselves. My family works in the woods and has been told not to put out fires until the proper authorities have worked it out.

206 A novel idea ... more Obama speeches ... Drawing renewed attention to the economy, President Barack Obama will return this week to an Illinois college where he once spelled out a vision for an expanded and strengthened middle class as a freshman U.S. senator, long before the Great Recession would test his presidency. The address Wednesday at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., will be the first in a new series of economic speeches that White House aides say Obama intends to deliver over the next several weeks ahead of key budget deadlines in the fall. A new fiscal year begins in October, and the government will soon hit its borrowing limit.

242 Guy Mohawk, If you like that type of thing there is an antenna channel that carries Boris Karloff's Thriller, and Night Gallery. It's called METV. Thriller is on Sunday night from 10-11, and Night Gallery is on weeknights at 11. This channel is gotten through an old fashioned antenna. My brother hooked up my dad's tv so that you can select AV for cable, or TV for antenna on the tv's remote. Both the cable and the antenna are inputted into the back of the tv. There is another channel, Antenna TV that carries Alfred Hitchcock Presents at midnight on most nights. Also Naked City is carried by METV and RETROTV. I bring this up because I truly hate most of the stuff on most channels, not only because they spew liberalism, but because they are just plain stupid and poor quality. Most of the reality shows make me want to hurl a booze bottle at the tv screen, and lately I haven't even been watching Food Network because of the Paula Deen crap.

270 The problem with that chart of government programs is that government is not government is not government. As an example, if I were to look at my property tax bill, it would have state property tax, local property tax, a mosquito abatement district, a school district tax, etc. If I were of a mind, I could go to the office of the mosquito abatement guy and yell at him (he's actually a pretty decent chap -- I've spoken to him about West Nile Virus fogging).

OTOH, do I want the unaccountable bastards in Washington DC -- or, for that matter, in Sacramento -- to have 1/10 of the government functions they do, in fact control? That would be NO. As much as possible, all government should be local government, paid for and managed at the lowest possible level -- and optional. 90% of my interaction with government should have the top dude of the organization within 50 miles of where I am, and his organization should be funded 90% by people within 50 miles of him.

273 222 We make "grits" with quinoa, works as grits or cereal. We use the organic nacheral stuff. 323 So I have to share. Proud dad moment. Eldest daughter lost her first tooth yesterday. Tooth Fairy came last night and left her 4 quarters. So I'm and out early for church. Wife and kids come later. While they're eating breakfast, she's got her quarters lined up on the table, but separated. 2 and 2. "Mommy, these 2 are for Jesus. They're his money. I'm going to give them at church today. These two, I wanna go to the mall and see what I can buy." Melt my heart one time kid. So then she gets to church, decides she wants to put the whole dollar in the offering plate. I say to her after church, "All right, lets go to the mall." "No daddy, I gave all my money. I don't have any to spend." Ooooohhhh no sweetie. Daddy has you covered. As my wife said, "Generosity repaid with generosity." So I let her pick two things from the Disney store. (1 for being good for quite a while here recently and 1 for the Tooth Fairy money thing.) Let the younger daughter pick out 1 thing. (She's been good too and the meltdown would have been epic.) Holy fuck Horde. Have any of you been in that store??? My daughter's generosity got repaid many many times over.

Response is slow since I am amazed at the detail a poor county in northern Minnesota has on their website.

But my point was going to be that I was looking at a Plat map for state land to hunt. And the amount of county and state tax forfeitures has skyrocketed. Now in the link they don't label the same as the printed map. But if you play with the identify feature you can see how much the state now owns (mostly the north part) Which was way less when I was looking 10 years ago.

There have been several Spider-girl characters. The one who had own book for a fairly long time was set in an alternate universe where things diverged around 1990 or so. May 'Day' Parker was the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane, and discovers she has inherited her father's powers at about the same age he first got them.

My eldest picked Spidergirl (There is such a thing?)

------------

Yup.

There's an interesting bit of backstory on that character...

Waaaaay back in the 90s, in the middle of a very convoluted (and despised to this day for reasons unrelated to what I'm discussing here) storyline, Mary Jane got pregnant.  And she had a baby girl.  Except that Normon Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, paid off the hospital staff to steal the baby and tell MJ that the baby was stillborn.  There was a brief panel a few issues later of some woman in Europe who now had the baby wondering when Osborn was going to deliver the next payment...  and then the child was quietly swept under the rug and Marvel pretended that it didn't exist.

Mostly.

In an alternate universe (referred to as M2), the woman returned May "Mayday" Parker to her parents.  She developed her Dad's powers while she was a teenager, and started fighting crime just like he had once done.  She had a reasonably successful comic book series, but Marvel's attempts to start series with other characters in the M2 setting inevitably failed.  Marvel would also periodically announce that they were going to cancel her series, but the sales numbers for her series constantly caused Marvel to change their minds.

Until, eventually, Marvel didn't change their minds and went ahead and cancelled it.  There's some suspicion that Joe "I never saw a comic book marriage that I didn't want to destroy" Quesada cancelled the series because it showed Peter and MJ in a happy marriage after Quesada had wrecked the marriage in the "normal" universe a couple of years earlier (Peter and MJ made a deal with the Devil that "undid" their marriage; you think I'm joking, don't you).

Where the hell do restaurants get those giant spuds? All the stupid supermarkets have are ones about the size of my fist. I even shop at Smart + Final, a commercial grocery supply place....same thing. But some restaurants regularly serve ones over twice that size.

A history of violence with enthusiasm, indicating both inclination and ability. (Has anyone offered any evidence that Zimmerman was even in a school yard fight, never mind have any real experience of combat as an adult?)

Medical evidence of drug use severe enough to cause liver damage in an 17 year old, and specifically a drug known to make its user prone to paranoia and violence?

I wish I could afford to buy enough prime time network air to run that video nationally.

596 OK, shirt.woot.com has gone completely off the rails.

The dealio for the site is that they have weekly contests for user-submitted t-shirt designs. If you've ever bought one of their shirts, you can vote for designs from that week (on a given theme) that you might like to buy. At the end of the week, they take the top vote-getters (and random infill) and decide which shirts they'll print....printing a new design every day. After a design has had its day in the sun at $12 [used to be $10], it goes into back-stock and the price goes up in two tiers -- the $15 [used to be $12] tier is the top 20 bestselling shirts + the shirts from last week....the $18 [used to be unavailable] is a print-to-order reprint of any shirt they've ever done. Indications are that this model has made a metric buttload of money for them -- and, I might add, I've ended up with more Cthulhu-themed shirts than would otherwise have existed.

Now, before they got that print-to-order technology down, they used to have overruns in weird sizes and such, and would blow them all out as "random shirt" at 3 for $20 -- which made a lot of sense, as it was clearing their warehouse of old stock and you'd never expect to see it again.....but their latest deal is to do virtualized random shirts at 2 for $12 [http://www.woot.com/offers/random-printed-2-pack-3].

And I'm just not seeing the business justification for this beyond, "jazz the topline and who cares about margins?" All the fun of "oh, it might be that cool shirt I just missed from three weeks ago" disappears into "it's whatever ink gets squirted on the fabric." It just seems....misdirected.

Medical evidence of drug use severe enough to cause liver damage in an 17 year old, and specifically a drug known to make its user prone to paranoia and violence?

I wish I could afford to buy enough prime time network air to run that video nationally.

There used to be two chains around here which self-destructed rather oddly. The first, Nob Hill Foods, had a situation where the head dude decided he'd rather be Walt Disney.....the official story is http://tinyurl.com/lo8thol -- but read between the lines. The second was, possibly, more peculiar. Fry's markets had experience with being hard-nosed with suppliers, rejecting bulk of iffy products, moving produce aggressively so it didn't rot on the shelf.....and while Silicon Valley was growing up around them, they started selling ICs like heads of lettuce. And now they're http://tinyurl.com/kker3sw -- although a "rump" of the original Fry's still exists in Arizona -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fry%27s_Supermarkets .

IIRC, when I was there it was a Safeway. And there was a Sears Catalog Store (remember those?) in back of it. You could order anything carried in the Sears Catalog and pick it up there in a couple of weeks.

Looking at the website for Vallarta -- 'cause I was thinking, "a what-the-what?" -- I'm thinking that the demographics of that area must have changed markedly. When I graduated from Hart High in 1979, there was no way that a store would self-describe as "Meat, Cremeria, Produce, Taqueria, Liquor, Beer, Tortilleria, Bakery, Pasteleria, Catering, Food to go, Juice Bar, Van Service, Customer Service, Check Cashing" in that part of town.

Posted by: DamnDirtyRINO at July 21, 2013 10:49 PM (m0h0I)

629 Oh yeah, that part of town has gotten very Latino, at least in the cheaper parts. Newhall has a lot of sharp contrast where you can walk just a few minutes to go from $million+ homes to some pretty shabby places with small lots. I know of a few cases where some contiguous lots were razed so a single high end house could be built. But the amount of that allowed appears to be constrained. I'm not up on the local politics but I expect you need to know the right people to get the permits.

Vallarta came out of nowhere to be a serious second tier player in LA County and beyond. Part of me feels a 'there goes the neighborhood response' but they're pretty well run. They have a real butcher shop on the premises of the sort you rarely see in the big brand supermarkets any more. Very good produce. The deli section and lunch counter is terrific unless you severely dislike that kind of fare.

And they understand their customer base pretty well. They have a shuttle van that run a shopper home with their purchases, because so much of their clientele is on foot and that makes taking a big load of groceries home a bit of a problem. In some ways it's a bit old fashioned, resembling urban supermarkets of a bygone era.

They're as far north as Fresno and Santa Maria now, so chances are you'll be seeing them appear in your region before the decade is done.

Supermarkets are a weird, weird business. First, they're highly unionized (except, of course, Walmart and Whole Foods), they have antitrust all over them all the time, so Albertsons stores had to become Lucky's up here when they are run by Save-Mart and Albertsons out east had to be kept as Albertsons but run by Kroger....and the Vons and Ralphs and QFCs aren't really their respective brands, but are parts of larger groups. They run at astonishingly low margins but have much opportunity for meddling -- random factoid: I heard one time that the salaries of the manager and assistant manager for a store are typically covered by the company's returns from recycling cardboard.

Furthermore, the supermarket worker from 25 years ago wouldn't recognize the work. For stuff like potato chips, store employees never even touch them before checkout -- they rent out shelf space and the potato chip company handles all the stocking and supply issues.

Just from the low level of transparency, high level of spoilage, and temporary nature of employees, one has to suspect that the field is rife with patronage, graft, fraud, corruption, and systematic crime....but yet it seems to mostly function properly. Sort of like how the trash actually gets picked up in New Jersey at a not-too-exorbitant cost.

632 DDR, I've downed plenty of fast food in my life but Wendys has always been disappointing the times I've been there in recent years. Except for the Frostys.

Could be worse. There isn't a Burger King in Castaic anymore, even though this town is a gold mine for fast food joints due to location for traffic on the I-5 headed north or coming from there. The mountains you have to pass through make people feel a need to prepare themselves or take a break after getting past. But that place was so badly run it went under. It's like failing at running a water shop at the edge of the Sahara.

It was mucking with the rack jobbing by the Teamsters that killed Hostess. They tried to blame it on the Baker's Union but the really insane requirements were from the Teamsters. Such as a requiring separate employees to drive the trucks and stock the shelves, with each traveling separately. The guys from Coca-Cola and Frito-Lay I asked about this were amazed.

Syzygy December 16, 2006 @ 4:51 pm Take one large potato, low starch variety. Wash thoroughly, brush with vegtable brush. Get all the dirt off, but donÂ’t damage the skin. Dry thorougly. Poke a fork in it 4 times. All the way in. From one end to another. You want all the moisture to have a way out. Rub skin with canola or vegtable oil. All over. ItÂ’s going to be messy. Deal with it. Rub oily skin with kosher salt. Not table salt. Kosher salt. ItÂ’s bigger. But since it doesnÂ’t have iodine in it, you might get a goiter of thatÂ’s all you use, so use iodized salt on other stuff, or eat sea food. AnywayÂ… Put potato, holes side up, directly on a rack in the middle of a preheated 400 degree oven. Go away for one hour and 30 minutes. Leave minion to make sure your house doesnÂ’t burn down. Or disposable children. Take potato out of oven. Use oven mitt, dummy. Place on plate. Put clean tea towel over potato. Smack potato with side of hand once to break it open. This will release all the remaining steam at once, leaving you with white, dry potato flesh with the consistency of snow. It will also leave you with second degree burns if youÂ’re not fast enough, so be careful. Load potato with butter and sour cream. Not margarine. Margarine bad, butter good. A little salt, cause thereÂ’s a lot still on the skin. A little freshly ground black pepper. Eat potato. Add more butter to empty skin. Wait one minute for it to melt. Eat salty, crispy skin.

There's a little place about a mile up the road from me called the Burger Bar that makes a great patty melt.

You can't get those at any fast food joints that I'm aware of, and for the life of me, I don't understand why.

643 The centerpiece of the menu is Jack's Munchie Meal where $6 nets you an order of Halfsies (half curly fries and half regular fries), two Tacos, a 20-ounce drink, and a choice from four entrees. The available entree choices are: - The Stacked Grilled Cheeseburger - basically a grilled cheese sourdough sandwich as the top "bun" for a sourdough cheese burger. - The Exploding Cheesy Chicken - a standard crispy chicken sandwich, but with mozzarella cheese sticks and a white cheese sauce thrown in for cheesy goodness. - Loaded Nuggets - chicken nuggets topped with two kinds of cheese, Ranch, and bacon. - The Brunch Burger - a croissant breakfast sandwich with a hamburger patty, fried egg, hash brown, bacon, and cheese. 644 Then the Russian farmer looked at the NY Times reporter and said, "Comrade, we have potatoes from here to the feet of God!" The NY Times reporter dutifully wrote that down. As he was scribbling, his minder grabbed the farmer and hissed, "We are an atheist country! There is no God!" "Comrade Commisar," said the farmer, "there are no potatoes either."

645 639 Ah but corruption has always been with us. It is one of the inherent flaws in human nature that the conservative knows is a disease that cannot be cured, only treated. The utopian minded liberal cannot comprehend this and never understands why their communities become owned by the worst among them once they expand beyond the tribal level.

Posted by: epobirs at July 22, 2013 03:15 AM (kcfmt)

Corruption has always been with us in certain ways.....but now its pus is spreading everywhere. The wave is cresting to where many organizations are objectively worse than nothing at all.

The DoJ has decided to fan the flames of racism rather than ensure there is a cost; the city of Detroit cannot light streetlights or respond to police calls, but sucks up tax revenues like nobody's business; every dollar borrowed as  a student loan raises tuition likewise.... If you paid for your own dental care, and went to a bookie to lay a side bet to pay for any dental care >$1000, the overwhelming majority of people would end up spending less than the premiums for dental insurance.

Critics of Keynes used to talk about having guy dig a hole and another guy fill it in.....but we're way beyond that -- we now have a guy to fill the hole, a guy to fill it in, and five guys to inspect the hole before it's dug, while there is digging, while it's a hole, during the fill, and after the filling.

The only thing you forgot was chives.  I even use then in my rare 3am omlette.  Fresh outta the flower bed.

663 Just to expose a little angst.....I'm an accountant, a CPA. I've been several types of accountant over the years -- Auditor, Corporate Controller, tax accountant, Computer systems consultant, Internal Audit manager, Internal Control consultant.....and, to a certain extent, many of these things have left me better-qualified for future ones.

And that has led me to focus on touchstones like "accounting is about accountability" and "you manage what you measure" and "it's not enough to manipulate information.....it has to be timely inserted into a decision loop."

My last gig was implementing Sarbanes-Oxley in a way that didn't cost a gazillion dollars and might actually provide benefits.....I believe that we did that very well, and I'm proud of our process and results.....but that's over. Sarbanes-Oxley was a creation of congress, and they no longer care.

When the financial crisis hit, I thought there'd be a nice boom in FDIC auditing, or cleanup on mortgage lending. *crickets* For years, crickets.

At this point, it looks like the "next big thing" in accounting is either Obamacare "navigators" or revenue accountants for the likes of facebook and groupon.....both of which, in my view, are ultimately doomed to failure. They're scams, and the signals are that the next big accounting wave is prettying-up or papering-over scams.....

I'm hoping that I can find a place where accountants actually create value, enhance accountability, and improve efficiency.....by looking in red states.

But seriously....I've been the Controller of a small manufacturing company. Every day, "are you sure that you want 20% of the finished cost to be packaging? How could you save money in packaging that you could put back into a quality product?" I loved doing that, and I'm pretty good at it.

But implementing Dodd-Frank and Obamacare are going to be where "instant experts" will be demanding premium billing rates. Problem is, there is no way to implement this crap that will not smell less crappy, much less satisfy the objectives of the law in a cost-effective manner.

I see stuff on the Wendys coupon flyers that looks enticing but whenever I try it it just not very good. I still keep the flyers in the car during those periods when I have a job that has me driving around a lot. So I guess I haven't given up on them.

I generally avoid the cheap Spicy Chicken sandwiches. It's a way to sell sub-par chicken by making it so you cannot taste the difference. The best cheap chicken sandwich IMHO is at McDonalds but not all of them. Some of them, especially in crappier neighborhoods, have a spicy version just like the other chains.

Going with friends to someplace new is enjoyable, because even if it's bad the experience is shared. But much of the time I want something reliable and predictable. Especially if I'm in a situation where I'm eating on the go.

There is a Jimmy Deans a few miles down on The Old Road and another on Lyons IIRC but I've never eaten at one.

I eat out under two circumstances. When work has me away from home and it is a necessity. Or in a social situation. I simply have no friend in my immediate neighborhood and its been years since I got together for food socially less than thirty miles from home. It was pretty much the same way when I lived in Thousand Oaks because none of my friends lived out there. So there were places in town I was curious about but never had occasion to try. It was just too costly to do restaurants all by myself when I could feed myself at home far cheaper.

One funny thing is that Tommy's is all over the place now, including one in the same group of fast food joints and gas stations where the Jimmy Dean is located, but to this day the only Tommys I ever buy from are the original three. The places we'd hop in the car and go to at 2 AM on a summer night if we were bored and hungry. Today, when I have a job that runs lates, like the bank work I've done a lot in the last five years, and I'm driving home at OMG in the morning, stopping in at Tommy and getting a triple chili cheeseburger and fries is a major comfort food indulgence. But only if the mood is right. Otherwise I try to be more sensible and hope I might get close to 200 pounds again in my lifetime without being seriously ill, which is what it took the last time I got down that low.

Posted by: epobirs at July 22, 2013 12:22 AM (kcfmt)

679 Ah, the dreaded "slow down" direction from the nanny state car prudes. I've done a bit of research on this. Speed is simply NOT a factor in car crashes. UNLESS you're drunk. In which case, the bigger issue is that you're driving drunk. So, no, the correct direction is NOT "slow down", its "don't drink and drive". Because, inevitably, you're going to drive way too fast for your impaired brain to process and then you're dead. Not because of speed, but because of DRUNK.

The perfect version I recall reading of recently was the three man crew where each had a job in sequence. One day it was reported there were two men going down the road in the island greensward, with one man digging a series of holes and another filling them in. When asked, they said the third guy whose job it was to put the seedling in the hole had died but the union insisted they be allowed to continue performing their jobs.

726 While I do not wish them ill, I genuinely cannot comprehend why any American would give a crap about a couple of Brits spawning.

727 Classical liberalism didn't have governmnet fire fighting or police, those are modern ideas. In the early 1800's there were neither. There were elected officials whose job was keeping the peace, but anyone could take people before grand juries. Fire prevention at the time was also handled by private companies (mostly insurance companies) and non-governmental volunteer forces mainly.

728 What that chart doesn't include is the level of government. There is much I find objectionable at the federal level that is entirely acceptable at the local level where voters can decision suited to their needs, including not having a function be government based.

732 Snobbiest US cities: Boston, San Fran, NYC, DC I don't think Houston or Chicago belong on that list.

734   48  I think we've had the 'grits' discussion before on an ONT. Either they are a heaven-sent breakfast treat, or they are disgusting concoction resembling watery cream-of-wheat.

George Carlin nailed it in one of his early standup routines.  "Remember the first time you had ham and eggs in the South?  'Hey.  What's that white stuff down there?'

[in a disgustingly cheery Southern accent:] " 'Hell, them's grits!'

" 'They're movin, man. . . .' "

735 Modern, big-government, "compassionate", Washington DC conservatism just follows a step behind the ever-expanding bubble of "modern" liberalism on its long march towards socialism. The Constitution defines a much smaller circle.
