462 Boy, cob-logging is hard work. You have to do "as well as" the host, come up with stuff in line with the overall blog atmosphere, write a funny write-up, create funny graphics (if the chance is there) and then hope people don't notice how inferior you are at all those things.

Want to feel absolutely svelte? Tool around any military commissary on a payday weekend...there always seems to be at least one big (I mean really BIG, not fat but amazon-quality LARGE) gal pushing a shopping cart with at least one baby in it. She is almost always closely followed by a very short, very skinny, and very meek lance corporal who obviously adores her. I used to look for this couple and try to stay fairly close to them. Made me feel positively petite.

I wonder is this a relatively new phenomenon? It seems strongly correlated with the feminist imperative of "piss off men" and the "masculinist" response.
I'd imagine that it's always been around in some form or another. The main difference is that for most of history, people a) didn't live long enough for it to matter, and b) Were often beset by starvation and parasites which left them skinny, but certainly not healthy.

I saw that everywhere when I was in. Two different branches, three continents, it never changed; the small lower enlisted guy hooks up with the "generously proportioned" woman. I could never figure it out.
Heard one guy give a straightforward reason (he volunteered it, we didn't ask): "She's warm in the winter and shady in the summer."

"Savage" is an old lefty who used to hang around with the child-molesting Allen Ginsberg. He cynically cooked up a right-wing radio persona in order to hustle cash after various other speculative ventures failed. His mask occasionally slips, as when he energetically joined the railroad crew trying to convict George Zimmerman.
If "Savage" never comes back from his disappearance, it'll be too soon.

That's probably the biggest reason I am not an avid hunter. Despite living most of my life in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, I've kind of decided that hunting is something I'll do only when meat gets scarce in my local grocery stores. All the game I've eaten has been thanks to friends and family.

We were coming back from dinner the other night and there was a dead fawn on the side of the road that made me so sad and pissed me the hell off. If was in our neighborhood with a speed limit of 30 mph.

And the deer here have no fear of being shot, so they just stand there looking at you as you're trying to run them off. Throw rocks at them, nada. The babies run though....which makes the mom follow.

I missed the in the way guy meme discussion yesterday but I wanted to add my 2 cents anyway darn it. First, kind of a dumb place to expect to take a picture, it wasn't even a very scenic place at Disney World, I mean there are probably a zillion other scenic spots.
My second cent, just because that guy got in the way, does he really deserve to have his picture splashed all over the Internet like he is the douche or something. I freakin hate social media sometimes. I hate the idea that anyone anywhere in public can now take a picture of me with their damn smartphone and splash me everywhere on the internet with some awful caption, or commentary, or manipulate my photo. I HATE IT.

I have a girlfriend who is a licensed wildlife rehaber, and takes in orphaned fawns. Before my mom died, I took her over to help feed the tiny babies bottles of goats' milk. I'll never forget how happy that made my mom.
I keep meaning to drag my husband over, just to see these tiny little guys. They grow up less than two miles from us and eventually end up in our yard. Our neighborhood assoc. has hired hunters who thin them out in the fall.

I also blame all my damn friends on Facebook, which I barely participate in now. They are constantly posting pictures of us in high school doing stupid shit. yeah, that's really what I want people in my adult life to be seeing. The fact that they have to take the effort to scan the photos in because it was before digital makes me all the more pissed off. You couldn't have taken 2 minutes to think about whether your friend from high school would be OK 30 years later with you posting a photo she didn't even know about on Facebook so not only all of your FB friends, but hers see it?

You will see a guy who has gained 100 pounds while his wife looks like she is the same size as 1966. Or you will see a woman who has gained 50 pounds and quit wearing makeup or fixing her hair.
I think this has to do with whether the person's appearance and fitness is based on personal pride or simply was done to catch a mate.
I am of the keep yourself in shape mode, plus I color my hair professionally and try to wear reasonably contemporary clothing and make-up. I don't expect to look like I am 35. I just don't want to look like a slob or scary.
I don't get why people let themselves go to the point they are repulsive. It is a mystery.

Sort of a cross between "Cat Ballou" and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". Peckinpah directed. An end-of-an-era film about the dying of the old west. The sound track is interesting.

Evening 'rons and 'ettes!!
Maddie update: She has been running fevers for quite some time, and a CT earlier this week revealed an abscess in the mediastinum (behind the heart). She had surgery today for this, got through it okay. Back in the ICU post-op, and with chest tubes again, so certainly a setback in recovery, but still doing much better than when this started. She will also need skin grafts sooner than originally anticipated, though that might be a blessing in disguise as the areas would start healing sooner, ultimately being less disfiguring (I hope).
Please keep the prayers coming horde, they are very much appreciated.

So now gender roles can be assigned? What happened to the all determinative genes? I really wish the LGBBQ movement would decide if gayness is a disability or a superpower.
They want it both ways. The "We're all born this way" argument was always kind of bullshit. It was a useful club for because it allowed them to make the argument that "gay marriage = civil rights movement!" The problem is that if homosexuality is genetic then an argument could be made that it's a birth defect.

She was google-eyed and asked "Didn't that hurt?"
"Nope".
In the house she runs and tells her mom what happened and said "Grampa said it didn't hurt at all, he must be made of iron".
And so was born the nic.

My own theory is that male homosexuality benefits a small group during times of plenty by removing males from competition for mates while keeping their ability to contribute to the success of the tribe. Women, on the other hand, are more likely to be bisexual since it helps create bonds between women who may share a mate, encouraging social harmony and caring for each other's children.

I was acquainted with a few homosexual males in college. With some of them it may have been a choice. Wouldn't know.
But there was one guy there who was perfect. I am telling you that he could have had his pick of any woman he met. He smart, handsome, athletic, and liberal. A musician, too.
Darwin says that if you have the choice, you choose the opposite sex. He also says that when men (in particular) have lots of options, he should go poly. (Well, okay, he didn't say that exactly, but it follows.)
But no. This man, the perfect mate, was gay.
No damn way he chose to be gay.

I don't deny that some men are born gay, but I do think that there are others who are drawn to the lifestyle because it allows them to avoid dealing with mental health issues. They embrace the more destructive aspects of the culture because it's what they would have done anyway, but if they were straight they'd face a lot more pressure to get help. Instead, they can tell themselves that any disapproval of their lifestyle is merely "homophobia".

If you believe in evolution by natural selection, you cannot believe that homosexuality is genetic and remain logically consistent.
Bullshit. Homosexuality could easily be caused by a combination of recessive genes that do no harm otherwise and are passed along from straight parent to straight child. Not to mention that plenty of homosexuals throughout history have fathered children.

That's quite a curriculum. I can only boast GCSE chemistry off that list (although I did get an 'A' in it).
I think, for this guy, a correspondence-course in logic, or discrete-mathematics, or anything that handles "not reaching conclusions when the facts aren't at hand" would do the trick.

Yeah, I've considered it, but I'm a computer geek. I need to be around lots of software companies. Because if I go to into an office that sucks, or if I just plain fuck up then I need to have options.
In Houston there were options. In Denver there are options; even in the *gulp* West Coast there are still options. In Boise . . . I don't know. Maybe in a decade.

If it's in the woods, why not burn wood? If you've got hills on the property, maybe impound some of the water for hydropower? For solar, your first question should be what latitude you have; for wind, do you have prevailing winds -- the whole global-warming government-subsidy treehugger-pandering industry is all about ignoring local conditions.

Shirley Jones has a new memoir out. Confirming that her late husband Jack Cassidy was bi, not a real shocker there, and into some kinky stuff. Ummm.. Mama Partridge three-way.
Also turns out Cassidy slept with Noel Coward to get an acting job, then carried on with him over the years in gay dominatrix play. Used to make Coward get out of his wheelchair and crawl across the floor to service him and such.

Samuel Delany (a gay Science-Fiction author) had a (gay) character in one of his books go off on this glorious rant about how the born gays were fine, persuaded gays were fine, but the "political gays" were total obnoxious creeps. I wish I could remember the name of the book so I could find it again, because events have reinforced the message time and time again.

They gays I've personally known all insist that they were born that way. Who am I to question what they are saying. Are there just weird fuckers out there who swing both ways? Yeah, but as a friend of mine always said, if you've had a cock in your mouth, you're gay. Of course, he's the same guy who says that all women are lesbians because who doesn't love pussy.

I skimmed the IQ stuff -- mine was high enough in elementary school to have me skipped a grade, but I've been doing my best through alcohol and a career in accountancy to get it back within normal range. I think Hiho's point, however, is valid -- you don't start out with "insert tab A in slot B", you start out with "who makes you feel good to snuggle with?" From there, actual *sexual practice* preference can be, to a certain extent, learned.

O/T Cthulhu - a recent foundry tour confirmed a suspicion of mine: 3-D printers are in fact quite good for making positives that, when properly sealed and finished, will produce good molds. If you can deal with cast aluminum, bronze or brass, with some small amount of finishing, you have a solution. Cast iron and other ferrous alloys are a bit more involved.
Posted by: Arbalest at July 26, 2013 01:26 AM (FlRtG)
Problem is, a good mold isn't just a representation of the object, it has to embody a strategy for fill and release. 3D printing is best for items like http://tinyurl.com/ktfo2bb or http://tinyurl.com/l4f75gc -- which really can't be created any other way. When people keep going on and on (and on and on and on and on) about stuff like http://tinyurl.com/k9valj2, it just makes me crazy -- 'cause doing that with 3D printing is like building a house with a dremel instead of a skilsaw.

There used to be an annual Renaissance Faire near Agoura, CA -- which was (in one respect) funnier than hell, 'cause the ground squirrels around Agoura were a serious reservoir of the black plague bacteria. Each Ren Faire held there had the potential to be a much more realistic simulation of early times than intended.

Long ago, my brother had a Kawasaki H3 750. This was a very dangerous motorcycle. The 2-stroke triple engine was amazing but just about everything else was crap. Trying to apply that engine in the stock frame and suspension was courting insanity.
Sometime I feel like a human equivalent of that bike. I've tested in the 140s but the other bits just aren't up to the same spec and some are downright broken, such as the ADD and tendency to depression. IQ by itself just doesn't tell you enough.

Are you dropping intellectual landmines for CAC? Quite ingenious ...
Problem is, a good mold isn't just a representation of the object, it has to embody a strategy for fill and release.
Yes, and in the case you cite, a parting line and file are a solution.
In the general case, draft can be added to the print design.
There are various videos on YouTube. "myfordboy" (myford: a high-quality brand of lathe) has a series of 27 videos on casting aluminum. It's actually a reasonably good primer and maybe even an intermediate guide, as some of the techniques shown are not introductory. The series is worth viewing when you have time and interest.

Nah, not trying to get crosswise with nobody, just not as taken with 3D printing as the Make Mag guys are. There are certain things (previous comment had examples) where a parting line ain't gonna get you very far for 3D printed objects....but things that are solid and chunky really do better when milled.
And, BTW, why isn't someone working on a generic 3D positioning dealio with snap-in heads for router bits, end mills, 3D printheads, pens, lasers, dolphins, cutters, rabid weasels, and diamond etchers?

Incidentally, WTF is up with them in Denver? -- I had this big reddish one near me on the grounds of the state capitol, and when I shushed him away, the little bastard charged me! I suspect that a lot of them have mental illness. They are drawn to the lifestyle because it allows them to avoid having to deal with their problems. It gives them an immediate way to blame all of their problems on something else and pretend that the world is out to get them.

Most guys are horndogs. Gay guys don't have the natural urge to reproduce, in fact, they have an absence of the normal male's revulsion to homosexual activity, so they have all the sex they want, no kids to worry about. In other words, they can hang with the boys like teenagers forever, no normal adult responsibility.
A question...if fat people, smokers, etc, are going to be subject to Zerocare penalties, why not gay men? Anal sex is inherently unhygenic. Ruptured sphincters, dick infections from years of impacted feces in there, hepatitis, AIDS, etc, etc.

That's silly. Del Taco is mediocre to awful serious Mexican food, while Taco Bell is its own unique genre and has nothing to do with Mexican food per se, and is therefore unique and tasty. Do you also refuse to eat Doritos because they are not "authentic" tortilla chips?
If I'm looking for good Mexican food, I don't go to Del Taco, Taco Bell, El Pollo Loco, Taqueria Guaymas or any other chain. But I will eat at any of them if my radius of operation is constrained by time and circumstance. Probably why I have to spend so darned much time on the treadmill...

My primary objection to Del Taco is that they limit themselves to "authentic" recipes prepared in a mediocre and unimaginative style, while Taco Bell has liberated itself from any pretensions, and can prepare a Mexican "inspired" menu unhindered by any claims to authenticity.

I had a similar problem.
I can take tests and do well.
Now, I'm not ignorant. I "know" a lot of stuff and when I was younger I remembered it all.
I also can deduce sometimes what the answer might be by eliminating some of the others.
Anyway because of this, I got/get fantastically high test results: I.Q., PSAT, SAT, Military Qual tests. So those who give them say I'm smart.
But I'm not, I'm fantastically stupid. I KNOW all this stuff but can't effectively use it. Except on tests.
So it's kind of been the bane of my existence. Until I stopped taking tests.

All think I'm smart but when I don't act smart, they think I'm doing THAT on purpose when actually that's my default state.
*sigh* It ain't been easy.
