Wait - The National Conversation on Race Has Rules?!?
Of course it does - and they're all designed to shut down (and shut up) any argument a white person might have. I learned this early on in high school when I fell for the classic 'frank conversation about race' gambit - which is never a conversation but rather an occasion for white people to be confronted about/confess their racist errors and seek absolution from any non-white members of the 'conversation'.
Given this why would any white person ever voluntarily enter into one of these traps? Well apart from sheer cowardice.
Anyway Jenée Desmond-Harris of TheRoot has issued some rules about the Great National Conversation which are about what you'd expect:
1. Talking about race isn't racist. Don't say that. Vilifying people who discuss race and point out racism - making them the bad guys - is one of the ways racism is maintained. So is acting as if "blacks suffer from racism" and "whites suffer from reverse racism" are equally valid points of view....
5. Black people shouldn't have to fit your definition of what's respectable to deserve equality or justice. It's silly and unfounded to blame inequality caused by institutionalized racism on, say, sagging pants or rap music. If you want to celebrate black people who are educated and high-achieving and defy persistent stereotypes, great, but that can't be a requirement for fair treatment. We got into trouble with this type of thinking when evidence that Trayvon Martin was a normal teenager messed up so many people's impression of him as a sympathetic victim.
Patterico has some fun with her claim that they're for 'everyone' - not just white people.
Is This The Next Zimmerman Case?
Always remember how abysmally the media 'reported' the Zimmerman case at the start and keep that in mind when reading the details of this case.
Merritt Landry, a 33-year-old "white caucasian" shot the victim, a 14-year-old black boy, in the head. A single spent cartridge case was recovered at the scene, indicating that a semi-automatic weapon was used and suggesting that a single shot was fired. The hour of the shooting was approximately 2:00AM, on Friday, July 26, 2013. As of this writing the victim is reported to remain alive, in critical condition at a local hospital. The victim was shot within feet from the rear door of Landry's dwelling in New Orleans, in an area accessible only by having to scale a locked fence, suggesting forcible entry onto the property by the victim.
...The Hazouri recording purportedly shows the two teens talking in the middle of the street outside of Landry's house at about 1:44AM. One wore a dark tank top and the other wore a light tank top. The teen in the light tank top climbed over Landry's fence and into the yard. Landry's large dog began to bark, alerting Landry to the intruder.
Hazouri reports that Landry, who has a baby daughter and whose wife is pregnant, believed that the victim was trying to break into his house. "All I know is that Merritt had told his family that he had said: 'Freeze!' and it looked like the guy turned at him and had his hand on his hip," Hazouri reported.
So of course Landry is being charged with attempted second degree murder. No word on his relationship with Peruvia or the notorious race-criminal, G. Zimmerman.
Same Weather Programs + Different Computers = Different Weather Forecasts
Most major weather services (US NWS, Britain's Met Office, etc) have their own supercomputers, and their own weather models. But there are some models which are used globally. A new paper has been published, comparing outputs from one such program on different machines around the world. Apparently, the same code, running on different machines, can produce different outputs due to accumulation of differing round-off errors. The handling of floating-point numbers in computing is a field in its own right. The paper apparently deals with 10-day weather forecasts. Weather forecasts are generally done in steps of 1 hour. I.e. the output from hour 1 is used as the starting condition for the hour 2 forecast. The output from hour 2 is used as the starting condition for hour 3, etc.
One thing you learn in Numerical Analysis is that non-linear systems can be quite sensitive to initial conditions (and guess what - most weather models are non-linear). So under some conditions just the errors from floating point rounding operations can be enough to make your results diverge. Now this is weather modeling not climate modeling but it's a cautionary tale about betting the farm (and world economy) on the output of computer models. But hey SCIENTIFIC CONCENSUS!
Gawker: 80% of All Adults in U.S. Face Near-Poverty or Unemployment
During their lives. Which ends up casting such a gigantic net as to make the statistic meaningless.
Also true: 84% of all Adults in US Face Car Fires, False Imprisonment, and the heartbreak of Psoriasis.
Chicago Firearms Confiscation Begins
Or reason #57 why registration always leads to confiscation.
In Illinois, gun owners are required to get a Firearms Owners ID card, or FOID. It's good for 10 years, and then you need to renew it. But if you don't renew your card, or if you do something that displeases the powers that be, your FOID is NULL and VOID. Which means you can't own guns legally.
Cook County police officers have become increasingly worried that when someone's FOID card is revoked, their guns aren't instantly confiscated. So they're doing exactly what gun control advocates have said that registration would never result in - door to door confiscation.
Unless the reasons the FOID was invalidated would also make you a prohibited person, I don't see how this could be constitutional. Buy hey it's Illinois.
2) Judging by their response, the meanest thing you can do to people on the Internet is to give them really good software for free.3) Three things never work: Voice chat, printers and projectors.
7) Most websites treat "I like it" and "This is good" as the same thing, leading to most people on the Internet refusing to distinguish between "I don't like it" and "It's not good".
So What Do Bears Actually Do In the Woods?
Luckily that tree can't talk.

I go to New Orleans a lot for vacation. I love the city immensely, but many of the locals I meet tell me that they or someone they know has a friend that has been murdered at random. It hardly ever involves someone that the victim knows, or a gang dispute. It's a mugging, a carjacking, or even worse: a random shooting for the hell of it. And guess what the age and race of the murderers are 100% of the time.
So if two black teenagers jump my fence in New Orleans and I have a family inside, I'm going to be just as trigger happy.

And is the mother (I assume absentee father) going to be charged with child welfare violations for allowing her 14-y-o out at 2 a.m.?
BTW, whoever first linked the story in the ONT whenever it happened--Friday night/Saturday morning IIRC, I noticed the linked report left out the 2 a.m. fact using the vaguer "early Saturday morning" instead.

I'll go Hot-Air, "in fairness" on this one and say that if it's got rules, it's at least a debate (or a boxing-match), and I'm fine with that. Fuck, I'm fine with dueling.
But I agree on the last bit - if the rules are set up to support a specific side, the match is rigged.

There needs to be a rule that you can't include lesser charges. Want to go after second degree murder? Fine, but no manslaughter included as well.

TFG and HUD are going to have certain zip codes designated as "racist" in order to force integration of poor minorities into middle class neighborhoods
HUD Launches Scheme To Racially Diversify Suburbs
http://tinyurl.com/n7vbeuk
Diversity: Now even ZIP codes are racist, and according to this race-obsessed administration, you're racist for living in a suburban area with little public housing. And it plans to change that.
In his speech, Donovan vowed to help urban blacks relocate to suburban neighborhoods, where they can have access to "good schools, safe streets, jobs, grocery stores," among other things. He claimed suburban realtors and landlords still discriminate against blacks.
"African-Americans," Donovan said, "are being denied their freedom of choice."
He said the HUD database will detail by neighborhood what "access African-American families have to community assets — including jobs, schools and transit," which he added "is something the NAACP has long called for."

I am not fond of mistakes, and the Hattori case was a horrible mistake. The law is what it is in Louisiana, and I was politely made very aware of it. I've gone on at length about how even a clean shoot is a life altering event, and I wish people erred more often on the side of caution but I refuse to try to passive-aggressive chickenshit nibble and grasp at changing the law through the methodology of "lawfare."
Peer pressure is a lot more effective at changing the mental climate of folks WRT self-defense than this game we're stuck in.
I stood guard at our shop in the Parish during Rita's aftermath.
Looting is not the Pelican State's State Sport in any Parish outside of Orleans parish because at the end of the day the law is decidedly on the landowner and businessman's side.

Vendette, well 2 this month so far. One in the spring. One last fall. 3 last year, 2 the year before that. Those are the big fires, there have been smaller more quickly put out fires that didn't do much damage.
On the plus side, the buildings have automated fire alarm calls, so the minute smoke is detected the first fire trucks are dispatched. I think that has really saved them a more serious situation.

Oh, we can. We can give them discipline if we had the will to do it. But we've been told it was "Jim Crow" and "apartheid".
When 92% of a certain population just plain doesn't believe in the rule of law (at least as it applies to them) - as we find with the Martin / Zimmerman case, with 8% agreeing with the jury's verdict - then 92% of that population are simply going to have to be treated like they're not fit to be treated as if they were part of our civilisation.
Otherwise they will keep push, push, pushing until our rotten facade falls around our ears.

They of course never violated any treaties or pacts that they made with the settlers.
The Indians just minded their own business and were innocent of all wrong doing.
Sure.
Now some of the tribes further west were more peaceably inclined but by they were few in number and by then any human with red skin was assumed to be more savagely inclined than not.
Also, one must wonder about how they dwelt in the Americas for so long and (especially in the North) NEVER allied themselves or formed large cultures.
Perhaps their bloody minded tribalism played a part? N'est ce pas?

He left the safety of his house to go outside and confront the perp. And, I ain't defending the perp. He clearly had bad intentions.
But "castle" laws in most states only apply if the perp enters your house. Being outside, it doesn't matter a whit how close he was to someone's door. If you shoot the guy and he was unarmed - and he wasn't attacking you - you fucked up and you are gonna be charged with something. Attempted murder? I dunno.. he's not dead so you can't charge hm with manslaughter. But he fucked up and he will be charged with something.
This has no relation to the George Zimmerman csae.

Well then, what is the reason for the majority of Blacks seeming refusal to either reject or correct the growing and widely seen thuggery of their peers?
When 30% of a group is committing 80% of the crime and the crimes are mostly done to other members of that group, how does an outside group observing these facts react otherwise than supposing that for some reason those committing the crimes are being sheltered or cheered on?
This sort of criminality was not widespread until after the '60's and the Civil Rights Movement gained traction and the massive riots.
What. Happened?

My very first day in Japan was the Kobe earthquake in 1995(?). I was on the 48th floor of a hotel and awoke at about 0545 to the sound of my suitbag swinging back on forth in the closet, hitting either wall. The top of the hotel was swinging back and forth about 6 feet. Which was good because swinging is better than collapsing.

If that's what you meant, allow me to state the obvious.
I don't have to turn on the TV to check a see if they are still distorting reality. Did we just go through a prime example of this? And, you and I and all the rest know why the Organized Left has been doing their thing for past 100 years, infiltrating our government and certain part of our culture.
But, for a moment there, you sounded fooled by the distorted picture of black Americans that the Left is trying to paint. And here's the thing: we know that, because of the down spiral effects of generational illegimacy, that picture is becoming more real everyday (gang activity is a direct result of mass illegitimacy). This is an assimilation of a culture, just as eman originally pointed out.

Quite. Louisiana also adheres to this quaint notion that you need permission to "cut across property lines." Archaic and outdated in this age of "I go where da fuk I wanna" and all that but there it is.
You probably do not need to be on another person's property after dark who doesn't know you, period.

That's funny. I'd much rather live in "fucked up Louisiana" than in any part of your Illinois paradise. Property and law and good manners mean something there.
Your type of "conservative" is so desperate to be the rewarded trained little lapdog of the progressives that you desperately want to show "I get it no really I do let's cut the little shit in half!" and in so doing Solomon knows you are in fact not the parent.
In the State of Louisiana you have the right to security of property and self.

I know this is a "radical" concept but you do not have the right to trespass, engage in assault, or take the life or threaten the same from another person.

That's true to a large degree I'd wager. I did not like the Napoleonic model of jurisprudence in many ways but the overt presence of an active Judiciary and the deference they show to the DA and Sheriff lends itself to allowing true community sense of intent WRT "the law." The fact is you learn your Sheriff and DA's "rules" for the road and if smart follow them.

The Louisiana statute governing the "use of force or violence in defense" says:
"there shall be a presumption that a person lawfully inside a dwelling, place of business, or motor vehicle held a reasonable belief that the use of force or violence was necessary to prevent unlawful entry thereto, or to compel an unlawful intruder to leave the premises or motor vehicle" if "the person against whom the force or violence was used was in the process of unlawfully and forcibly entering or had unlawfully and forcibly entered the dwelling, place of business, or motor vehicle" and "the person who used force or violence knew or had reason to believe that an unlawful and forcible entry was occurring or had occurred." A homicide likewise is considered justified "when committed by a person lawfully inside a dwelling, a place of business, or a motor vehicle...against a person who is attempting to make an unlawful entry into the dwelling, place of business, or motor vehicle, or who has made an unlawful entry into the dwelling, place of business, or motor vehicle, and the person committing the homicide reasonably believes that the use of deadly force is necessary to prevent the entry or to compel the intruder to leave the premises or motor vehicle."

I posted the vehicular law for a reason there genius. The entire body of Louisiana law reads that you are secure in your property. You don't get to park your car in a public park, shoot hoops, and randomly pop a gang banger or "St Trayvon" for a laugh.
You can conceal a nice pistol in your vehicle and it is not a felony if the perp enters your vehicle and you plant him he's gone. Your as usual mastery of logic and reason would be better served pondering as analogy whether a person hopping up and down on your car threatening you is fair game. That is a closer equivalent to "he's in my yard!" How fucked up is your cesspool that they only have 33 million in slush money around these days CTJ?
You do not get to enter another man's property in the State of Louisiana and invoke some horsefuck "right" to be there.
This ain't the UK yet no matter how hard you try. I do so love you major metro "conservatives" trying to "fix" the rest of the nation.... It's awesome that you can't win power locally but YOU can manage Louisiana better than the Louisianans....
I think I'll call this the Christie Principle.

John Derbyshire -- who lost his post at _National Review_ for his honest and heartfelt contribution to the "conversation about race" -- would have said that mistake #1 by Mr. Landry was being white and in New Orleans.
A big, big chunk of what got Derb canned was his frank advocacy of avoiding black people. White flight is, he said, an entirely rational and justified personal safety strategy.
Per Derb, if you are white, and if you live somewhere that there is a lot of black crime, it's utterly foolish to arm up to defend yourself while staying there. Instead, move. Move somewhere safer and whiter. Fast as you can. Take a loss if you have to. Declare bankruptcy if you have to. You can rebuild your own credit but you can't revive your own corpse. Just get out while you're able and before your neighborhood becomes completely Detroit-ified.
If George Zimmerman had followed Derbyshire rules, and bailed the fuck out of Sanford, FL, instead of volunteering for neighborhood watch, he would have been spared the giant lapful of shit that the State of Florida dumped on him. He would be safely anonymous today and would be spared having to sit facing the door for the rest of his life.
And, without Zimmerman around, maybe Saint Trayvon Of The Bloodied Hoodie would have mixed up and socked back some "purple drank" and then broken into Jane Surdyka's house to wreak havoc. She certainly deserved that and worse.
You can call Derbyshire racist. But, um, Derbyshire would *openly agree* with you if you thus described him. He welcomes the label. That's a pretty rare level of definitional courage in 21st century America.

and by *evil* we mean things like Black on White Crime, Sudden Jihad Syndrome etc etc
Whites are not allowed to protest or get angry or notice things like Jena and the Memphis attack on the one couple...b/c "racist" and "profiling"....

Double dittoes.
Recently due to the non "Conversation On Race"™, Ol' Rich Lowry was spouting off about the realities of white/black relationships.
The nerve of some people's children. I commented that he owed Derbyshire an apology and his job back before he started pontificating about such.
I get really tired of people saying "racist" when someone states facts.
Racism is when a group or individual believes and promotes the belief that one race is superior than another and based solely on skin color.
Bigotry is similar but can be an equal opportunity hate.
Being critical of a black person (or any person of color other than beige) is not racism nor bigotry.
In fact profiling is a daily requirement in so many ways, it's laughably ridiculous that profiling is made out to be some evil and hate filled act.
Liberalism IS a disease and the MEDIA is in the final stage with no signs of remission.

Trouble is, too many of those who have this thug attitude come from good homes with parents who are law abiding.
Problem is they refuse to see the evilness in rap and a culture that promotes ignorance and promiscuity and they don't take the steps necessary to prevent their children from being drawn into the cesspool.
Same with white families happens. And it's even tougher to counter the social pressure.
Which again is why the MEDIA is to blame. It's through those organs of music, tv, video that the trash is disseminated and it's made hard to resist.
It doesn't help to have black celebrities thrown up as idols to be emulated and they turn out to be thugs under the tats.

My definition of "parents" is limited to those who actually parent. Not just to sperm donors and fetus incubators and AFDC check cashers.
There is colloquial conversation these days among white yuppies of their mania for protectiveness and control having gone too far, and of it being important for their kids to be more "free range", as the talk terms it.
At age 14, in the daytime, I was a pretty damned free range kid.
But at zero-one-four-four hours, on any night of the week, if I was not squared away in my bed at home, then when I did get home, it would be to find every light blazing, one parent on the phone going full blast to figure out where I was, and the other parent in the car out performing a quartering search.

McCain, Graham et al want patted on the head and to be the good token GOPer to the media and they will go split the baby every time needed to protect their media drug pushers.
Their drug is "approval."
I don't want the media's approval b/c the mission I am on with my political beliefs and my expectation of leaders on "my side" is the obliteration of these tribal identifiers and a law abiding, ethical America.
I don't want the baby split, because frankly that baby is "the American people" and I strive for and desperately want the American "tribal identity" to be a respect for Locke and Smith not my skin color, accent, or place of origin.
The reason I'm doomed to die in misery on the matter is the mission of the left and media to remove the blue and white from our flag and the betrayal of our mission by rent seeking Oligarchial assholes in our caucus.
It'd be a bitter pill to swallow if the GOP forcefully went down arguing that "no goddamn you assholes the goal is to get past this race bullshit and have a color blind society" but I will not even get the comfort of knowing we went down swinging instead we get the split baby and Lindsay and McCain begging for reach arounds from Chuck Todd...

I respect marriage, and I know to actually ACT on it would be just plain wrong. But, no matter how much I tell myself to stop, I can't stop getting butterflies in my stomach when I see him.
There have been times when I have thought that MAYBE he might have...a little interest in me too, which makes things that much harder.
It's at the point where I just need to get it on with him once, just so I can get past it and move on...or something else would have to happen too snap me out of it.

This is common to the point of cliche.....and has been for most of recorded history. Younger woman falls for accomplished older man. Sometimes the older man falls for the younger woman, sometimes not....but things seldom turn out well.
More disturbing, however, is the concept of "get it on with him once, just so I can get past it." How on earth is that supposed to work? I mean, if every time you've "gotten it on" has been a one-night stand, this might seem a reasonable sentence....

My Mom married a veteran 15 years younger for her second marriage. Then again she would get carded in her 40s.

I've actually never had a relationship with a woman younger than myself, so I've got a bit of an outsider's view....but if she's trying to say that her choices are 20-somethings or married 60-year-olds, I think there might be a bit of a setup going on.

rofl no nothing like that lot. My eyes are clear, my hair is healthy. I don't look like I am on crack. I don't drink, and I've never touched drugs in my life, so I've aged well, I think...I look my age, maybe even younger. I would say I am pretty average.
@552
I don't know what that towel thing means.
@553
Well most of the 30-somethings are married, so...
Besides, if they are between 25-29, I really don't consider myself that much older than them. I am lusting after a 60 year old man, and you find it odd that I would look at 20-somethings? At this point, I think the latter would be more than acceptable all things considered.
Posted by: Tickled Pink at July 29, 2013 02:46 AM (2vuT6)
So, you're saying 30-somethings are out because most are married, but this 60-something is reasonable despite being married? And you're saying that you consider yourself contemporaneous with 25-29 year-olds ["don't consider myself that much older"] but you find yourself uninterested in them? I suspect that you were setting yourself up with a false dichotomy here....
Which, of course, doesn't say "why?" We haven't even started to figure out why you're uninterested in 25-29 year-olds, why you disregard the existence of 30-59 year olds, and what you find particularly attractive about this specific 60-year-old.

Seriously:
1. Find another church NOW
2. Wait until his wife dies
3. Find a single man between the ages of 30-100
4. He is MARRIED. Do NOT be that kind of woman.
This is not a game. His wife may be the jealous type and the type that can strip, clean, recombine, lock and load an M16 in under 60 seconds in the dark and adultery is not looked on kindly.
Finding another church is your best option and the easiest.
Posted by: The Man from Athens at July 29, 2013 03:10 AM (RXQ2T)
I don't think the underlying issue is the church -- which doesn't mean that finding another one is a bad idea, BTW.
I guess the thing that I get from your advice is that it comes from several different premises. #1 is about exposure/avoidance; #2 is availability; #3 is alternatives; #4 is shame; and the M16 is consequences. That's all over the map. It really depends on what drives her as to which is the better tactic.
Posted by: cthulhu at July 28, 2013 11:20 PM (T1005)
On the thinking he might share your interest-you're infatuated and likely projecting. And if you're not, see previous paragraph.
I wouldn't advise adultery in any context, but a church is probably the worst place to do it.
Except maybe Twitter.

I agree that what she describes is as dangerous, anti-social, and harmful as sticking people's heads in vises in 99-44/100% of cases.....but it is not quite as illegal and significantly more common. I could just say that it's a dumb idea and she should change churches/relocate/fap, but she specifically said "Help snap me out of it....please..." That's not just saying "help me stop the action", she's asking about "help me stop the compulsion".

V and M was not a bad effort at all from McCartney. He was patchy with his stuff, but no more so than the others, really. He really knew how to write a great song when he put his mind to it. Here's what I reckon was the best thing he ever produced post-Beatles.... the excellent Take #16 of Junior's Farm. This could have been on the White Album.

My compass notoriously swings to #2, but I have too much common sense to have had any fun from it.
#7 is right out.
#5 and #9 are rapidly becoming a tolerable idea, but I can also imagine how terribly that could turn out.

I once had a business lunch with a guy who opened up about his wife being #5 -- but, seriously, in a "special-ed" sort of way. About how he appreciated that she was always glad when he got home, and how pleased he was to be able to make her smile. It was.....unusual, and a bit disturbing....but -- at least from his description of the relationship -- both parties were happy.

Found four of the drives I was digging up for Merovign. Thought there were more but the is so much accumulated stuff in there. I've spent an absurd amount since 2004, when I moved from a much larger place, to keep a hold of this stuff. And so much of it has become worthlessly obsolete or no longer has an emotional bond for me. I've already gotten rid of a large portion of my books and still need to haul a lot more to the library for donation. It's especially ridiculous to keep paperback novels by the cubic foot that can be reduced to a single DVD-R full of EPUB and MOBI files. Even the more visually oriented stuff loses its appeal when you have a good big high res monitor and debts that should be paid instead of storing this stuff.
And a lot of this stuff could simply have been replaced for a fraction of what it has cost to store over the years. And would have commanded a far better price if I'd sold it off back then. I told myself, lied to myself really, that the situation was just temporary and someday soon I'd have ample space for book shelves and disc racks again. I cannot comprehend the people on those hoarders shows but I surely have a clue as to how it gets started.

I turned 49 today but feel like I never did any of the stuff I was supposed to have done by now. Like have a family or any sort of a career.
I do finally have a decent bicycle. Some family members decided to help out with the cost since it had been some years since I'd had any kind of significant birthday action. That was as mostly my fault because my birthday rarely put me in a good mood.
Oddly, I received a present from my sister's dog. It was two items, a Hollee Rollee ball that allows us to play in the house with concern for breaking the walls or his compromised tooth (his favorite game is to lie at the top of the stairs and roll the ball down to me so I can throw it back to him), and a package of 12 pair of the socks I where most days. This because the same dog has a penchant for stealing and shredding my socks. This may be due to my sister using discarded old socks as dog toys when he was a pup, leading him to believe my socks were fair game, regardless of vintage.

I'm in the process myself.
When I was a kid, my parents had a weird thing going where we'd move annually -- sometimes even more frequently. The money that sent me to college came from building houses, moving into them before they were finished, finishing them, moving to the next, and selling them off. My mom had family in Orange County and a job near Long Beach; my dad had family in Santa Clarita and worked downtown -- every so often there'd be a huge argument where my mom would go, "you haven't taken out the trash in two weeks and I'm tired of living so close to your stupid brother" and my dad would reply, "ok, we'll move."
So I found comfort in "stuff". I couldn't know what I'd find when I walked out the door to my bedroom, or out the front door of the house, so I had continuity in the books and knick-knacks that were hauled from place to place. But now, I've lived in this house for longer than anywhere else.....and I've got a ton o' shit that's gotta go.
That said, a lot of it is tokens for various dreams. As Adriane said, craft projects never started. Wishes never realized. And a lot of it is a past that I would like to remember fondly in details....but that I may have plastered over in my memories....sometimes to cover pain, and other times merely to move on.

Don't bless the whirlwind or curse those who love.

It's kind of sad how they screwed up selling that game. The first in the series was on the Sega Dreamcast and ended on a cliff hanger. Thus anyone who never had a Dreamcast and the first game had little incentive to pick up the sequel. They should have done an enhanced port of the first game and packaged it together with the second, which would have attracted some interest in Japan and been accessible to newcomers in the rest of the world.

I've settled on "Beautiful day!" It just seems appropriate when everyone in a park has driven half an hour to get there, is walking through a forest smelling the trees and the earth, watching the birds, and listening for wildlife. People generally respond with "yes, it is" or just smile. Wouldn't work in a parking lot or mall, but it's the best greeting I've found so far.

It's not just venereal diseases. Tom Wolfe had a great bit in "The Great Relearning" [http://www.unz.org/Pub/AmSpectator-1987dec-00014?View=PDFPages]: "At the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic there were doctors who were treating diseases no living doctor had ever encountered before, diseases that had disappeared so long ago they had never even picked up Latin names, diseases such as the mange, the grunge, the itch, the twitch, the thrush, the scroff, the rot." It's a great piece that really illustrates the horror behind "start from zero."
Incidentally, I had a situation where I got conflicting "urgent care" diagnoses about what my doctor properly identified later as gout. A while later, we were talking about something and he came up with another straightforward (and probably accurate) diagnosis....so I composed a little something for my physical.......and laid it on him: "You're always talking about this basic stuff. Why don't you ever diagnose something official, like "Pasteurella pestis"; or with initials, like "MRSA"; or even in Latin, like "intracerebral haemorrhage" -- or is that all reserved for your better patients?" He stammered "but you wouldn't want any of those...." before he realized it was a put-on.

Perhaps media outlets should be required to make the full unedited interview available on their sites. Call it the Truthiness Requirement. Nothing held back from anyone who wants the full details.
The same should be done for court recordings. Consider that video on Conservative Treehouse of the cell phone analyst guy whose testimony the judge in the Zimmerman trial chose not to allow to be entered into evidence and thus made available to the jury, who were not there to see the testimony. The networks and newspapers completely ignored the testimony as well, even though they must have had as much access to it as the Treehouse guys.
I'm willing to bet a very small portion of the Justice for Trayvon types are aware of what was revealed by the contents of his cell phone. Some would refuse to acknowledge what it meant but a fair number would be shocked at the info or the fact that the family sought to selectively delete items from the phone that might reflect badly on Martin.

It's a variation of SimCity, where you must restore the town Springfield after Homer wipes it out accidentally. The way they monetize the free game is by letting you use real money to buy virtual donuts that can be used in place of cash and more importantly are the only means to acquire certain unique items in the game, such as Hank Scorpio and his volcano lair.
The game gives you donuts every once in a while, when you complete a level and a few other occasions. These donuts don't amount to much when it takes dozens or even hundreds to buy the coolest stuff. But some of the cheap items have special qualities. For instance, the park bench variant with the coat resting on the back slats serve not only decorative value, just like the plain park bench that sells for straight cash within the game and is very inexpensive, it also adds .25% to the money and XP generated by properties on timed cycles and characters when they complete an assigned job, like shopping at the Kwikee Mart.
Failing to note this, I'd used up most of my donuts so far on accelerating events for a quick payoff. Very wasteful. If I'd applied them solely to decorative items with bonuses I could have enhanced my cash and XP acquisition rate by at least 5% by now.
Sigh. I don't know if it's just because I've had too much time on my hands lately or the game is that insidious.

Unfortunately, it's very obvious. The information is all right there out in the open. .25% may seem like a tiny, tiny enhancement but it really adds up if you do the math and realize how far ahead it puts you on getting cash to do more stuff.
I wonder how EA is doing on the donut sales. The game lets you buy as few as 60 or as many as 2400. I haven't checked all of the prices but the value gets better for larger quantities. For example, you get 60 for $4.99, 132 for $9.99 and 300 for $19.99.
A donut here and a donut there. Pretty soon you're talking about real money.

So you were ahead of the curve. It isn't like the Wachowskis invented the name.
I used to go by the name Nathan Brazil online. In fact, my first personal email address not tied to a specific company's service was nbrazil@ix.netcom.com. But I first adopted it as a handle for BBS use when I got my first modem back in 1982.
A surprising number of people asked me if I was a friend of Jack Chalker and whether he'd named the character after me. Yes, I'd explain, many authors are part of a cult revolving around time machine use to steal ideas from the future. Like Shakespeare mining West Side Story for his pale shadow imitation Romeo and Juliet.

Y'know, this whole thing about pagan flexibility is overrated. Sure, she's 24% more likely to provide anal, but it's 12% more likely that's all she's got -- 'cause the other innie is an outie. Sure, she's 68% more likely to do a threesome.....but 42% of the time it's with an extra guy.

NONE of the climate model code I've examined (about a dozen models) respects any of the 754 features and behaviors. It ALL took whatever the compiler defaults were setup by the standard runtime library startup code.
Hence, default rounding could be up/down/chop/nearest as the RTL chose.
I've NEVER seen any code to handle denormal situations or loss of precision interrupts. All the code ran with masked responses (typical RTL startup code default) meaning things SILENTLY flush to zero, become infinity, etc.

A very annoying aspect is that you cannot find out the price for a quantity of donuts without initiating a purchase. To avoid completing the purchase you have to tap outside the transaction dialogue and generate and error. It kicks you back into the game with the message "Ay Caramba! Some might have gone wrong with your purchase!"
I need to check with Google Play to make sure nothing actually got billed. Because I am not buying any damn donuts. Absolutely not. Ain't gonna happen. No way. Uh-uh, no sirree.
At least not yet.

I still have two machines with the Netcruiser app on them. The first was my first laptop (and really the first Wintel PC I owned), an NEC Versa 486SX running Win3.11. Netcruiser had the big advantage of having its own TCP/IP stack built-in and thus was a lot easier to get going than most other straight internet choices back then.
The other machine is a Toshiba Libretto, an incredibly tiny Win95 machine running a Pentium 75. Most people who saw me using it thought it was a largish PDA. Toshiba originally sent it to Jerry Pournelle but he quickly gave up trying to use it. I got custody of it and quickly became very attached. Had Office 97, Netcruiser and little else on its little drive. It was the item that lead me to create the Cold Dead Fingers Award, as in toshiba can have it back when they pry it from my...
Toshiba found this greatly amusing when Jerry told them this and even used that paragraph from the column in some of their ads in Japan.

DLC is one reason I hold out for the Game of the Year Edition or equivalent. I think I already mentioned how I was stuck having to find something for $55 or more at TRU or lose the value completely when I returned the bicycle I got there. After some soul searching I got the Skyrim Legendary Edition with all of the bug patches and DLC included. I normally would have held out for it to get a big mark down or appear in the Best Buy Deal of the Day.
On digital stuff I always hold out for the sales, both for the game and the DLC. No rush. My backlog will hold me for years, so under normal circumstance there isn't much temptation to pay full price for anything of a gaming nature. I still manage to spend far more than I should.

Have you heard the term "hypergamy"? Because you're experiencing a full-on, absolutely <i>classic</i> case of hypergamy right now. Your hindbrain, which does not care about morality in any way, is telling you "that guy would make a great father for my kids", and the rest of your body is reacting accordingly. If he were available, this would be a good thing... but he's not.
What you're trying to do right now is to stop being attracted to him. It won't work. Let me say that again: IT WON'T WORK. The hindbrain does not listen to reason, or morality, or anything else. The hindbrain has its own agenda, and you cannot change its mind.
You have only two choices. One, continue where you are, where you will eventually give in to temptation and ruin a perfectly happy marriage. Don't kid yourself that you wouldn't do it if the opportunity arose. You already know that you probably WOULD -- you've said yourself that you don't know if you'd be able to resist the temptation. And that's when you're NOT confronted with the possibility; actual temptation is always stronger than temptation contemplated in the mind alone. If he made a pass at you, you'd be so caught up in the rush of endorphins that you would accept; I guarantee it.
Your other choice is the only good choice open to you: run away from the situation. If you can, leave the parish and find another one to attend. If you're not willing to do that, then you must, I repeat, MUST take active steps to cut that temptation off. One of the best things you can do, if you don't actually want to commit adultery with this man, is to <i>talk to his wife</i>. Take her aside after church one day and confess to her that you're developing a crush on her husband, and you don't intend to do anything about it but you don't trust yourself not to if the occasion should arise. Trust me, she will be <i>highly</i> motivated to help make sure the occasion never arises.
Those are your only two real options. You will NOT be able to make the attraction go away by using reason. Your only two options are to commit adultery (let's face up to what it would really be), or to take active steps RIGHT NOW to put the temptation permanently out of reach. Leaving the parish or else confessing your temptation to the man's wife are the best way to do that.

That area, the Faubourg Marigny, is the section of town just downriver from the French Quarter. We've been hearing a lot about attacks, robberies, and shootings by "black males" in that area, especially since so many whites are attempting to gentrify it. I say, why move to an area where you as good a chance of being shot as you do ruining your car's suspension in a pothole -- and you have nearly a 90% chance of that? The rents are cheaper than in the Quarter, though they're still insane.
