Fun Fact of the Day: Shark Bites Are the Leading Cause of Death in Peruvia

So how is that even possible given its land-locked location and the relative lack of tornadoes?

Well it turns out that Peruvia is infested with one of the deadliest species of land-sharks known to science, Apristurus krampus. The Peruvian land-shark is a cunning and deadly beast that is fully mobile on land and water, and can flawlessly speak all 34 Peruvian dialects as well as the forbidden language of love and affection. With no natural enemies it freely roams the Peruvian countryside via the network of cess pools and figures large in the national imagination.

Many an unwary Peruvnik has ended up in a shark's belly and nearly every family can tell you a sad tale of a gullible daughter who fell for the charms of the sunyigazemberputz as it's known in the local tongue. Which is why at every meal you'll still hear the familiar Peruvian homily, 'Let eternal suspicion and the body of a Bulgarian keep the shark away."

Do You Know This Girl's Name?

Well Roman Polanski does. This is why.

The Daily Show and Lack of Fucking Integrity

They lie through editing. Reason #45 why you always bring your own camera like Matt Slick did.

What they edited and put on TV was this:
  • Matt:  "The reverse happens as well [camera angle change] where homosexuals go out and find straights to beat up."
Now notice what happened on the show.  They had me saying, "The reverse happens as well [camera angle change] where homosexuals go out and find straights to beat up."  That is not what I said.  I said "I don't know about bullying where homosexuals go out and find straights to beat up".

Oh Sad Albion

Whenever I'm in these places, I feel as if I'm where I belong. I love the look of the places, the sound (I really like Celtic music), the art, the history, the accents, and the ordinary people I meet on the street. I even like the way these places smell. Whether I'm in Scotland or a Wales or the English countryside, there's this indefinable green, flowery, fresh smell that I've never experienced anywhere else.

Having said that, I hate the fact that the UK has flooded itself with Muslims, raising the strong possibility of a majority population that has values antithetical to everything that is British; I hate the way the welfare state has leached away British values and backbone; and I hate the ascendency of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic feelings throughout the whole of the UK (and Ireland too).

The UK, from Scotland on down, fundamentally lacks vitality. All of this means that, when I'm walking around glorying in a place that feels like my spiritual and aesthetic home, I can't decide whether I'm the equivalent of someone foolishly in love with a dying consumptive (very Bronte-ish) or if I'm the equivalent of someone even more foolishly in love with a wife-beater - and I'm the wife.

Microsoft Word Problems

1. Helen's bibliography contains 27 web sites, two-thirds of which Microsoft Word annoyingly converts into hyperlinks. If selecting "remove hyper link" requires two clicks of the mouse, how many clicks will Helen expend in this awful, time-consuming task?
4. Miguel is pulling an all-nighter at the library to finish a history paper. If Miguel's computer is operating on Microsoft Word 2003, how many useful suggestions does Clippy have between the hours of 8 pm and 3 am?

Do tell!

Lots of Weiner talk, mocking Billy Jeff (we have one lib friend who claims "Bill is doing great things for the country" and we changed the subject).

Anyhow, we laughed and laughed (I had tears at one point, and I don't find too many things funny in these times).

Great evening, and now I've been put in charge of arranging regular meet-ups.

Posted by: rickl at July 30, 2013 09:15 PM (sdi6R) Twitter works because it makes goobers think they're more important and Really Having An Effect because other people see them saying something in the same context as a celebrity. @, like e-mail, just designates a person or nickname, like an address, and # designates a topic that you can sort by or search for more easily than random words, people use a #hashtag to "join" an unfocused conversation on a subject, such as #hacked, #filthyfilner, or #destroycapitalism.

87 53 I still don't understand how Twitter works. All that @ and # stuff is a mystery to me. Posted by: rickl at July 30, 2013 09:15 PM (sdi6R) Every username starts with an @. The system uses this to inform the user that someone is talking to them or about them (Twitters calls these "interactions" or "mentions"). # is how you mark something as a hashtag. People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search. Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.

It is what I'm drinking but I also love the non PC lyrics the Andrew Sisters used in that song.       Sorry all for the length but I couldn't chose where to cut it.

If you ever go down Trinidad
They make you feel so very glad
Calypso sing and make up rhyme
Guarantee you one real good fine time

Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

Oh, beat it man, beat it

Since the Yankee come to Trinidad
They got the young girls all goin' mad
Young girls say they treat 'em nice
Make Trinidad like paradise

Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

Oh, you vex me, you vex me

From Chicachicaree to Mona's Isle
Native girls all dance and smile
Help soldier celebrate his leave
Make every day like New Year's Eve

Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

It's a fact, man, it's a fact

In old Trinidad, I also fear
The situation is mighty queer

101 Since you stomped the Indianapolis link will comment on it here.

USS Indianapolis was a happy and lucky ship that Admiral Spruance used as his flagship.  She had been earlier damaged by a kamikaze hit.  Once repairs were done at Mare Island and since she was available, she was selected to carry the nuclear materials.  She stopped at Tinian to offload her mystery cargo.

The cruiser's next movement was to leave the Central Pacific and Nimitz's zone of control and travel to the Philippines and MacArthur.  Leyete was notified of this movement.  McVay received his briefing where no mention of a possible submarine threat was brought up.  Tinian was behind the front lines and with no obvious threat, no escort was provided and McVay eschewed taking a zig-zag course.

As the I-boat captain would testify at McVay's court martial, even if he had zig-zagged it would not have mattered.  Indy was alone on a clear bright Moon lit night.  Thus the ship was hit swiftly by Long Lance torpedoes after the I-boat skipper told the Kaiten suicide pilots they would not be needed.  IIRC the cruiser never even got an SOS off.

The delay of rescue effort happened because of a glitch.  Procedures in Leyete were in place to announce arrivals of ships.  But there was no procedure for an overdue ship.  Thus it struck like a lightning bolt the discovery of those men in the water.  Where did they come from?  Only then did people realize it was Indy.

The court martial was a kangaroo court for hazarding his ship.  Some said the whole trial was payback by Admiral King upon McVay for something McVay's father had done to a young King.

The slingshot delivered high momentum (mass x velocity), but far lower energy (mass x velocity^2).

The relative power of firearms are nearly always expressed by muzzle energy, not momentum.  The guy in the video was describing momentum.

Hi lo trailers were a good mix. All hard shell but you could tow them easier since you could drop the top down over the bottom for less wind resistance. Took to much time searching and it looks like that company might be out of business. I can impart more momentum into your body than a .45ACP 230 grain hollow point, by knocking you down with a running start (or even a hard shove), but I doubt very much that it would kill you.

Exactly.  Speed kills.

The debate over bigger / heavier / slower bullet vs smaller / lighter / faster bullet may never end, but claiming that his slingshot was more powerful than a .45 (because of the momentum) was a bit dishonest.

That said, I'm sure getting hit by his slingshot ball would be less than pleasant.

I'm sure I'll get flamed, but I looked at a new 870 Express at Gander Mtn in Morrisville a few months ago before I bought the used Moss 500. My 1966 Daisy BB gun with plastic stock appears to be better made than the new 870 Express.

However, older 870 fans seem to outweigh the Moss 500 fans. And yet, the location of the safety on the Moss is what gets the rave reviews.

Liek I said, look on armslist, or Carolina Shooters Club and find an older one used.

I'd look for a Wingmaster 870 with walnut stock, just because it's pretty.

You can barrels and parts for either.

Recently I picked up another bp gun,a Rogers and Spencer .44.  They were made late in the War, and there is some dispute as to whether any ever saw action.

I like the thing, the grips are big enough to fit my hand, something the Remington doesn't have, plus it's a top strap revolver.  Good strong design.

Since it sounds like a recreational thing, why not go with something that would do for hunting, but is more enjoyable to shoot. Maybe .243? Perfectly fine for whitetails and below. Depending on the age of the kid, you might request that he knock that off. IIRC, humans have the ability to "lock-in" languages in an age range somewhere about three to eight -- and they can absorb an amazing number. If you're on-staff in a foreign embassy, and your family speaks Spanish at home, English at work, the cleaners speak Swahili, you use French when visiting other embassies, and he's at a school with full-immersion Mandarin, he can become comfortably conversational in all those languages simultaneously during that three-to-eight-year-old period.....provided that each person consistently speaks one language. Otherwise, he'll start getting bleedover and end up with Spanglish.

Actually, I was probably one of the last people to get some exposure to Latin and Greek in California public schools. From Greek, you get things like the relationship between potable water, mesopotamia, and hippopotamus; hippopotamus and hippodrome; cephalopods, tetrapods, bipeds, and pedicures....Latin gives you inside clues as to what Neolamprologus caudopunctatus might look like if you know the name but don't have a picture ("caudopunctatus" means "spotty tail").

Then the grandson will be able to effortlessly hold conversations with him in Spanish and you in English in the same room and not get them scrambled. 424 Bony Tony Weiner's Communication Director, Barbara Morgan, as quoted in a Mediate report, responding to a Weiner campaign intern's piece in the NY Daily News -
“She sucked. She like wasn’t good at setting up events. She was clearly there because she wanted to be seen. Like it was, like, terrible and I had to like – she would like, she would just not show up for work,” said Morgan. “For the four weeks she worked there — she didn’t work weekends, so twenty days total. Of those twenty days, she missed probably five because she would just like not show up and not tell me she wasn’t going to be there. So, yeah, so there’s that.”

433 Predictions of possible jobs are always fraught with complications, guesstimates and fuzzy math, so they often should be taken with a grain of salt. No one really knows exactly how many jobs will be created. So maybe the president is right to be skeptical.

But the president shouldnÂ’t pick and choose how he cites job-creation numbers. Perhaps he is tipping his hand on what he secretly thinks of the Keystone XL by citing a low-ball figure, generated by the pipelineÂ’s opponents, but he should stick to using the official government estimate. (His 2,000-job figure is actually slightly lower than the Cornell estimate.)

Otherwise, the president ironically seems to be signaling that even his own government does not produce the “most realistic” estimate that should be used by reporters.

437 OK, I consulted the internet -- sulfur can have six bonds. When it meets up with oxygen (common enough in atmosphere), it oftentimes nabs four of them -- two with double bonds and two with single bonds. This is a sulfate block, where molecules can incorporate sulfur into their structure by latching onto the extra bonds of the single-bonded oxygens and not getting their hands dirty by touching sulfur directly. You get stuff like sulfuric acid (H2-SO4), aka hydrogen sulfate. Since the other stuff is grasping the bonds of two different oxygens, there have to be two of them on different sides of the sulfur.

On the other hand, sulfur can also use up some of those bonds by touching itself, but it will still end up with a net of two bonds. Since the bonds are on the same atom, they can both latch onto the same other part in a double-bond -- like CdS (Cadmium sulfide -- used in photocells) or PbS, which distributes Dem propaganda (just kidding -- it's Lead sulfide, used in infrared sensors). OTOH, it can use the bonds individually as well -- as in H2-S, hydrogen sulfide, a nasty toxic and corrosive gas that smells like rotten eggs before it melts your face and kills you.

I was thinking more generically. For instance, I'm a CPA. To get that and keep it, I had to have a fairly diverse knowledge of accounting which took me 3-1/2 years of school and 1 year on-the-job to get -- which was tested in a 19-hour 4-part test that I probably couldn't pass today. I also needed to have two years of documented experience in financial auditing -- which, due to a run of bureaucratic foul-ups, took me six years to ram through.....and, accordingly, I may have the CA record for most documented audit hours on a CPA application. And I had to genuflect to the gods of ethics with a take-home exam, backed by serious policies (one of the instructors at my school had a partner that actually went home sick in the middle of the day during tax season....to find some other guy in bed with his wife. Mind you, he was sick enough to leave the office during tax season, but he still managed to growl something along the lines of "Get Out. Now. Don't fuck around to put your clothes on. Out. Now. If you're here in 20 seconds or if I ever see you again, you're a dead man." Soooo.....next thing he knows, the partner is in court -- the adulterer filed a police report and the partner's being prosecuted for "assault". Turns out that "assault" isn't "assault" as civilians generally understand it -- in a legal sense, it merely involves the purposeful installation in someone else's mind of a reasonable expectation of imminent serious harm ["battery" is when you commence to actually do so]. Judge hears the suit, agrees that Mr. JunkInOtherGuysWife had reasonable belief that he might not survive his 21st second, finds partner guilty, sentences partner to 100 seconds of probation, assesses court costs against Mr. JIOGW, tells him he has 87 seconds left, and suggests he might consider high-tailing it off the courthouse grounds. Anyway, six weeks after that, the partner gets a letter from the State Board of Accountancy telling him that his CPA certification is revoked due to "acts discreditable to the profession" -- which, in part, includes being a felon.).

So, essentially, there are four E's to a CPA -- Education, Exam, Experience, and Ethics. And I get to do 80 hours of Continuing Education every two years to maintain it.

My absence from actual posting is also connected with what I deem The Megaphone Cunundrum (with which I see Ace wrestling frequently), in which having good arguments or superior narratives fails in the political battlefield to the superior strategy, one mastered by the Left, of having almost complete control of the National Megaphone, which they monopolize to blanket the airwaves with their absurd, fallacious and easily debunked memes, yet which never actually get debunked because the debunkers, such as us, are ignored and thereby silenced. So I find it increasingly futile to make good arguments or present irrefutable proofs at all, since it's very difficult to break through the megaphone monopoly to reach public consciousness. Instead, I now scheme on how to wrest away the megaphone, or at least break the monopoly, since by now we have all the arguments, and all we need to win the philosophico-political war is to give them a proper airing and finally be heard. Needless to say, it's a tough row to hoe, but I believe it is now the one that needs a good hoeing.

507 Zombie -- if you're still around....

To start with, I want to reiterate a concern for your safety and access.

You have done an amazing job in chronicling the excesses of the deranged progressive left. To do so, you've attended many of their rallies, ceremonies, memorials, street faires, protests, and whatever other mass gatherings where they've congregated.....and it is abundantly clear that you have not done so with a twirling neon sign on your head spelling out "press", "normal", or "conservative." And it is right and fit that you have done and continue to do so, because it so well illustrates the nature of our opponents.

But you should give some thought to empowering and inspiring the next generation of such reporters. What goes through your mind? How do you pull it off? What do you need to appear "in"? How can you become a footsoldier today in a group that you utterly loathe?

So I'd like to charge you, Zombie, with this geis - you have done so well, teach the world to do likewise.....but with the caveat that you not inform the adversaries of things they'd use for harm.

508 Zombie, I just wanted to chime in and say I totally get that. I have a similar concern and I don't have a *good* way to solve it - good as in one anyone else is seriously willing to participate in. Hell, if they take it and run and never mention me again I'm fine with that. Instead it's always "meh" or "wow good idea, look, over there, it's a weiner conference!" I probably don't have the temperament anyway.

509 Posted by: Jk Dentist at July 31, 2013 02:47 AM I disagree. I have three crowns, and two of them have lasted my entire adult life. The third eventually needed a root canal, but that root canal tooth is also still there. So far I have no implants or bridges, and I plan to keep my real teeth as long as possible. Keeping my real teeth in my head is worth the hassle. All this is true despite my having very "weak" teeth that are prone to cavities. I got very lucky in that I long ago hooked up with one of the best dentists in California, who has really kept my teeth in tip-top shape, despite predictions from previous dentists that all my teeth would rot away fairly quickly. This is not a paid endorsement, but two products saved my mouth and which I deem nearly miraculous: Prevident 5000 (prescription-strength toothpaste) and Glide (dental floss made from kevlar). Once I started using those, my dental health did a complete 180-degree turn. Highly recommended.

Posted by: cthulhu Well, I'm not quite at the "retired master training acolytes" stage quite yet. But I will say that behind the scenes I have already trained many acolytes, some directly with one-on-one [Web-based] training, others through mere encouragement, and still others through example. Even so, the political landscape changes quite frequently, and the kind of "citizen photojournalism" I did from 2002 through 2010-ish is no longer as useful or even possible as it once was, for several reasons. Firstly and most obviously, protests are fewer and smaller now than they used to be, since the Left is in power and has fewer things to complain about. Second, the meta-points that I made over the years have by now already been made, and repeating the same type of coverage over and over again is a game of diminishing returns. Third, documenting the extreme nature of leftism is not as necessary as it used to be, because by now it has become common knowledge; the half of the country that sympathizes with the Tea Party unanimously agree in polls with the statement that Obama and his entire philosophy is flat-out socialist. (The other 50% of the country are either mentally retarded or want socialism.) Fourth, the proliferation of cell-phone cameras has rendered what I do somewhat unnecessary and also (to me) more dangerous, because nowadays every moment of every protest is filmed from six different angles simultaneously by the protesters themselves, and there's nowhere to hide. The future is more toward the James O'Keefe model of sophisticated undercover investigations, or the Andrew Breitbart model of in-your-face counter-activism. My style of "blend in with the crowd" you-are-there journalism is OK up to a point but it does have frustrating limits. The problem for me is that I can't really go beyond those limits without risking exposure. Thus, for example, I can't really "interview" anyone, because if that person later saw my report, they'd remember who I was. Nor can I declare my true political opinions, lest I get burned at the stake by my fellow protesters. And so on. Thus I am restricted to my usual modus operandi (to answer your first questions) of blending in with the crowd so convincingly that I am perceived by all and sundry as "one of them." This is not difficult for me because up until 9/11 I was one of them, so looking and acting like one of them comes naturally to me. I've been at protests with as few as eight or ten participants, and later made reports about them, with photos, and the people who were there could not figure out who I was. Anyway, I must pivot with the times, and these days I'm working on a different kind of project, designed to get at the very foundations of the enemy's battlements; hurling stones at their walls, no matter how well-aimed, doesn't work as well as we all want it to. Political realignments do happen. I think this is time for another one. That's my goal at the moment.

Posted by: zombie at July 31, 2013 03:57 AM (+cx5n) I figured there was a 70% chance of that answer, no offense taken. I did ask a friend who is a genengineer to work on activating the toothing gene to get new teeth to grow every several years. Kind of like sharks except 7 years instead of 30 days. It would suck for several months every so many years, but then you would have brand new teeth. There are a couple of anecdotes of people growing a whole new set in their 90s or later, like the gene(s) have some trigger to do it again after your first set of adult teeth.

Ultimate Girls is a pretty funny pervy satire of shows like Ultraman. It's worth a single viewing but would have been funnier if they could have escalated more. The problem is, once you cross the line, you go from being outrageous to terribly mild in terms of audience expectations. There is so little good humorous hentai, largely I think, because the emphasis shifts from succeeding as comedy to instead succeeding as porn.

But it's like that everywhere. 'The First Nudie Musical' was back in the 70s. It wasn't great but actually had song good gags and some listenable songs. Oddly, I can still remember a lot of them. Several are only heard in fragments, making me wonder if they had complete versions written or even recorded but not used in the movie.

You'd think more would be done in animation, especially since there isn't the problem of finding actors who look good naked and can do comedy or act at all. But if there has, I haven't heard about it. There isn't that much funny porn at all, really. One of the best would be Phil (Girl Genius) Foglio's Xxxenophile, a comic series he did in the early 90s. Another item that is notable for strong plotting, if not comedy, is Bill Willingham's Ironwood, also from the same time period, long before his Fables series started.

529 528 Merovign Researchers at UCLA have already developed the next best thing -- a paint-on gel that somehow wipes out the bacteria that excrete the acid that is what actually damages your enamel and dentin -- and thereby completely pre-eliminates the primary cause of tooth decay. Participants in the study ate sugar all day long and did not brush their teeth and yet nothing happened because there was not the standard bad kind of mouth-bacteria feeding on the sugar and excreting the tooth-destroying acid. No caries in any of the participants, despite actively trying to cause it. Not sure why this treatment has not yet become widespread. (I'm pretty sure the FDA is involved, whatever the holdup is.)

534 I guess I should consider myself lucky to have teeth at all at this point. I went about fifteen years without any contact with a dentist at all, and plenty of self-abuse in the form of bad diet and hygiene neglect during the worst of my depression.

Then one day about five years ago, the second from the rear on the upper right side just collapsed. It wasn't painful but something had to be done immediately. So I went to the guy who my brother had been seeing and taking his kids to, who was also just a couple miles from my house. He got a crown going and quickly determined two more were on the verge of failure as well. So I've had three crowns for a few years now and he says now a fourth is needed. I also have some cracks in the front that he wants to put veneers on but the cost is simply beyond my means unless I get a steady job for a decent wage. (He also wants me to get a night guard and that would be a mere six hundred bucks.)

So I try to keep my teeth intact for as long as I can, knowing I'm paying the price for past neglect. I avidly follow the research on regenerative medicine, where they've had some notable results in growing new teeth in animals but that isn't likely to be in use on humans for quite a few years and will likely be quite expensive for a while if it should ever come to pass. And there is no telling how much damage Obamacare might do to research.

Third (arising somewhat from the previous), please help ensure that the progs can't hide behind secrecy, that they must take ownership of things that they say and do.

Fourth, keep in mind the next generation of real press. Not the lip-synching sycophants in the MSM, but people like yourself, Breitbart, and O'Keefe. They fill a basic human need -- help train them up right, even if they'll be doing things you'd no longer do yourself.

Fifth, remember that you're not just a columnist on PJmedia, you're not just a blogger, you're not just whatever you are in real life with a cool dentist -- you're an inspiration. People say "Be Breitbart!" because it extolls them to better fulfill their aspirations.....but you have been doing yeoman's work in actually doing so. Pick up the torch and pass it on, so that people say "Be Zombie!" as well. Or "Be O'Keefe!"

547 Covers and remakes can be an interesting study. The experiences of the couple behind the UK 'Coupling' were a lot of the inspiration for the Showtime series 'Episodes.' The ten episodes of the US attempt at Coupling can be found in torrents and it's interesting to see what they did right and where they went wrong. Such as changing the nature of a character to make her more comedic but less interesting of a person.

A big problem of UK vs. US is the shorter runs in the UK make for a different focus than in the US. In the UK you can plan to tell a six part story that has a finish but leaves things open for another run. But in the US you need at least 13 episodes just to get on as a mid-season replacement but the plug may be pulled after only a few are broadcast. (Coupling US was pulled after only three episodes were shown.) This makes it hard for the creators to commit themselves to telling a good story. 548 But seriously, I haven't "quit" and have no plans on doing so. Just because I'm a) taking a hiatus, b) working on a big new political project that doesn't involve a camera, and c) wasting too much time on late-night commenting, doesn't mean that the old zombie is gone. Even the undead need vacations!

Last thought: I'm not special, really. I don't want to be famous or an icon -- in fact the "zombie" username was originally just an attempt to downplay my significance as an auteur...a "zombie" just being a sort of faceless anonymous automaton, of no individual importance. I always wanted the audience to get the message, and not even notice the messenger. I still feel that way.

549 A big problem of UK vs. It's remarkable that a show like Buffy The Vampire Slayer ever got a chance.

550 543 Actually, given a little time to assess side effects, I figure in a few decades we could "genocide" S. Mutans like smallpox. It does seem so far that S. Mutans doesn't do any good, it's just a negative mutation of something pre-existing. So tooth decay is essentially a massively communicable disease. Posted by: Merovign Bingo! As a kid, I just assumed that the candy or sugar itself directly dissolved teeth. At least so we kids were led to believe. I had no idea that the sugar was just food for the real villain, a bacteria that spread throughout the human population like a venereal disease. (In fact, now that I think about it, it might very well be a venereal disease, originally spread by kissing!) The early colonialists were sometimes amazed at how natives in various places (in particular Africa, the South Pacific, Eskimos, etc.) had big gleaming white teeth, despite (in some cases) having sugar in their diets, while the European colonialists all had rotten brown crumbling teeth, despite supposedly having superior dentistry. The answer may lay in cultural quirks, such as that in many tribal cultures, kissing is unknown, or at least taboo, so that the S. Mutans bacteria never spread throughout the population, and thus the tribal groups never suffered from caries, the side-effect of the infection. Europeans meanwhile regularly exchange saliva, leading to a disastrous (but unrecognized) epidemic.

551 I am sometimes shocked the things some people believe. I have to remind myself I don't know every darn thing, either. S. Mutans, Adenovirus 36 (and others), I wonder how many other frailties will turn out to be ailments? We really are kind of working with stone knives and bear skins when it comes to medicine, as much time as we've spent on it. They think it was a virus that got my heart, no idea which one. Regarding the FDA, it's funny, every new therapy for my conditions always seem to be "five years away from human trials" for at least the last five years. I guess that's the new "five year plan."

I think it's mainly a side effect of how rapidly humans have changed the way they live compared to the normal pace of evolution. The type of diet that sends tooth decay into overdrive has only been widely available for a period of time that is a blink of an eye on the evolutionary scale.

Another factor is that no amount of evolution may help because it isn't selected for or against. Under natural conditions, malnutrition was a far bigger threat to retaining teeth. The amount of caries activity that might take wasn't going to add up to much problem until an age when most humans were long dead.

This is why we cannot expect evolution to ever make us less vulnerable to the problems of old age. The odds are against a pre-technological human surviving long enough to make longevity an issue in natural selection. You can have genes that make you highly probable to experience heart failure by the age of sixty but as long as you were good at making offspring in your youth who made it to reproductive age, it just doesn't matter.

Heinlein understood this when he wrote Methusalah's Children and admitted it in Time Enough For Love but stuck with the idea that the Howard Families breeding program succeeded anyway for reasons unknown. My take is that rather than breeding for longevity, they unknowingly were really breeding for high resistance to diseases of cellular growth, such as cancer. A lower rate of cellular reproduction errors would also delay a lot of complaints of aging. So longevity is side effect rather than a primary effect.

A lot of shows that might have been good once they got their sea legs got killed early. Another notable slow starter is, of course, Seinfeld, which hung around for four years before catching on big. The circumstances that allowed that must be remarkably rare.

It was a virus that got my father's heart: the common cold.

He had a gene, known since the 50s but specifically identified about 13 years ago. If you have the gene, you can be any age and have it triggered by a cold. When it kicks in, the immune system goes stupid and begins attacking the pericardium.

My father made it five years from the time he was diagnosed, which was remarkable considering his other health issues. He was a premie back in 1928 and had problem keeping food down until he was twelve. His doctor said he'd seen athletic men half his age die of this condition in only two to three years, so he was really amazed at my father's endurance.

I and my siblings have a probability of also carrying the gene. There is no inexpensive test available and not much value in the information if there was, as they have no treatment to offer as yet. But it is at least a possibility given that they now know what to target if genetic therapy becomes better implemented.

560 UCSF already has my genome related to a study, Imma call and see how much of it was mapped and if I can get it to check for p56lck. Every year I find some new thing no one ever mentioned and you have to dig for to find.

561 I cannot say from memory if that was the specific gene. I first became aware of it being identified from an article on Wired many years ago but I'm not sure what I did with the information.

It's a pretty well known problem. I'd be really shocked if you had the problem and they hadn't diagnosed it. My father's case was back in the 70s. In fact, it was early July of '77 when he died.

Posted by: epobirs at July 31, 2013 02:21 AM (kcfmt)

562 I don't think my doctors would recognize a bullet wound. Given the nature and commonality of the condition I am surprised it hasn't been mentioned, since it was a "flu-like bug" that precipitated the situation. I have fired like 7 doctors already, largely for incuriousity and perfunctorily dealing with requests, tests and information. Basically if you didn't break an arm you need a research doctor because practice doctors see 35 people a day and know nothing about their patients and don't remember issues from one meeting to the next and don't check their damned notes.

564 Well, all I can say is I hope you don't have it. They know a lot more about autoimmune disorders than they did in the 70s but AFAIK it's still something they don't offer much hope for if you have it. Some articles I came across just now suggest they're working on it, which is more than could be said back then.
