12 I took a break from work and walked outside to watch the fireworks here in DC. They were alright. Nice night for it. I stayed near where I work so I didn't get the full experience. Kind of peeked through the trees. I hate crowds anyway. I'm close enough to the Mall to hear the music too. Happy 4th of July morons.

People always talk of "car lengths", but the right way to do it is X seconds -- which works at any speed.

X=3 allows for 1/2sec for brain to recognize a problem, another 1/2sec or so for brain to get appendages in motion, and a couple of seconds for brakes to do something useful.

Any X where X < 3 and you risk crashing into the car ahead of you if they lock up their brakes for whatever reason.

The NYSP used to have this little slidey ramp gadget you could ride down to test your reaction time. They'd bring it around to county fairs. The idea was to jam on a fake brake pedal and stop your motion down the ramp. The further down you slid after being released, the slower your reaction time was.

My brain and reactions were pretty fast -- better than like 95% of the populace. I was on the brake and stopped the cart in about .4sec.

214 Don't want to hear about fireworks or grilling. We have been getting hammered with rain for the last three days, the real heavy shit. So, it decides that we need to have a good old fashioned flood in our city, but here is where it gets good. Our city has the fireworks on the banks of the river that flows through the city, so no fireworks tonight, and yes, it started raining again after a 3 hour sunny spell this afternoon. Was going to smoke a couple of racks of pork ribs and couple of pounds of beef ribs. Problem is that I have an electric smoker, and it was pouring fucking down rain, so in the oven they go. Late afternoon a break in the clouds! Fire up the gas grill while getting the burgers and dogs ready, look out at the grill, and flames are shooting up from the bottom and sides of the grill. Throw on my fireplace gloves and go out and turn off the gas, but I see that it has burned up the grill, so on the stove go the hot dogs and burgers. Oh, and MrsCaniac's parents couldn't make it because their basement leaked, and they had to clean that up. And Obama is still President. It would all make for a shitty day, but G-D, I love this damn country too much for that to fuck with me, and I am starting to get a nice little buzz going.

Good evening all.

Just have to rant a bit.

Sunday my Canadian husband and I went to a Canada Day get-together in Boston (courtesy of our daughter and son-in-law) and today we are in Canada - on Independence Day. Things seem totally upside down

Short version of why: One of my best friends died last week of a heart attack at 50 and we traveled from Florida to Connecticut for her funeral. And my mother-in-law had emergency surgery, so of course we headed up here.

Sitting in front of the computer at her house now. No celebrations outside, no fireworks. No Boston Pops on TV. We did try watching the DC & NY 4th broadcasts - not nearly as good, but we made do.

I'm sad we missed all of the wonderful things about the 4th: The music, the barbeques, setting off fireworks at our house, getting together with like minded friends to celebrate our nation's birthday.

Maybe I'm being melodramatic but I miss being in my country very much today; it seems surreal, and I don't like it.

A few good things did happen:

On the way back from the hospital, my husband took me out to a fancy restaurant for prime rib. Which somewhat cheered me up.

When our Canadian waitress heard I was American, she said "Happy Fourth of July!" Which of course brought tears to my eyes.

Morsi is out and the JEF has egg all over his face. Which of course made hubby and me laugh out loud.

We do try to make lemonade out of lemons when we can.

They are very industrious little guys...and build extensive underground tunnel systems.

One colony of prairie dogs was estimated to have a population of over 5000.

Coyotes are their main predator, and if the coyotes have been driven out of an area...the prairie dogs thrive.

Our local display was last night. Apparently the golf course had a tournament in late June one year and as a tahnk you to the community for putting up with the traffic, they had a fireworks display and invited everyone in to see it. In recent years, they got some negative feedback from the groundskeepers, so it's members only inside, but of course the rest of the neighborhood can still watch if you can find a space between the trees that line the edge of the course.

Anyway, there were some folks a few houses away from the spot I settled on tossing M80s around. And I could see from the flash, some were getting thrown into the street. In the breaks in traffic headed for the entrance to the course. That struck me as less than smart.

Also, since I had to walk past them in the dark, it made going home a bit of an adventure.

303 Today I wore a Mickey Che t-shirt to a restore the fourth rally. About 200 attended and listened to blah, blah. Several of the youngsters noticed the shirt and were a bit chagrined at the mockery of Che. I responded that Che was a brutal, sadistic monster and there is nothing remotely like the protections of the 4th amendment in Cuba back during the days of Che or even now 60+ years into the revolution. Their deer in the headlights speechlessness was a fine reward. I also reminded them that in the immortal words of Stevie Wonder "when you believe things you don't understand you suffer". I also pointed out that the suffering extended to me, my children, and my grandchildren because we have to live in a society distorted and abused by their ignorance. All in all it was a fun experience.

We were lucky, and fared well...but some of our friends and neighbors, not so much.

488 40 on the citizenship score, though I guessed in places. Still managed to eke out a majority on the justices.

For the elections, I got penalized a bit by not being able to vote for all 10 of the previous years. (young'n) Also may have undercounted the votes - do primaries before the election count?

That conspiracy quest seems to be one that needs a group (mostly cause white quality companions aren't good enough for L60 content).

507 Still up at 2 a.m. That's because I napped from 5pm to 8pm, which is because I had a couple of beers during the afternoon (I can't handle alcohol during the day, no goth jokes intended), which was because I went hashing which was because the hare moved the start time from 6:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. OTOH, it's finally cool and dark outside.

510 Lousy day for me. No work for weeks. Heat and lack of anything to define a schedule makes for very erratic sleep and general depression. Imminent birthday only adds to the general feeling of having gotten past sell by date in life without accomplishing anything of worth.

511 Sorry that you're having a hard time, epobirs. Lack of sleep can really contribute to depression. Try, if you can to create your own schedule. In other words, try to get up at the same time and go to sleep at the same time and have certain things to do during the day-look at want ads. go for a walk (if it's not too hot), etc. To feel like your haven't accomplished much is a sign of depression which tends to color everything and those feelings aren't necessarily realistic. If you have people who love you whom you love you have accomplished something. P.S. If you can get them consumption of cherries-dark ones helps with sleep. They contain melatonin.
