Where is the Middle of Nowhere?
Well here is a heat map showing the average distance to a major road, highway, or interstate. Red is far and dark blue is close.
And based on this Nevada (or Idaho depending on how you measure) has the most nowhere. On the other hand Ohio and some of the smaller New England states are probably the most connected states.
Michael Savage has never been my cup of tea but here he really really stepped in his own idiocy and dragged it all around leading Aaron Worthington to do a full-on Fisking of Savage's comments.
Despite all the self-congratulations for his research what Savage doesn't know about the Zimmerman case, guns, and the law would literally fill books and hundreds of blog posts. Here's the short version of his errors:
- Zimmerman was charged with murder - not manslaughter.
- The Kel-Tec 9mm Zimmerman carried does not have a manual safety
- Carrying a gun 'cocked and locked' doesn't mean you're out to hunt humans
- Guns shouldn't be carried in Condition Three just to slow down perps when they take it from you
- Zimmerman did not call Martin a 'f*cking coon'
- Zimmerman was not in his truck when the dispatcher said 'we don't need you to do that'
- The dispatcher did not give him an order and has testified that he did not.
- The fact that Zimmerman could have acted differently and the shooting avoided does not mean that Zimmerman is 'responsible' for the shooting.
I'm sure I've left out a few more but don't rely on me or Aaron Worthing - listen to Savage's own words right here:
John Kerry, Yachts, and the Stupid/Lazy Quadrant
Given his nearly perfect bad judgment the yacht was exactly where Kerry should have been. But the reflexive lying about it was despicable.
You see, on the one hand: John Kerry went yachting, instead of getting involved in the Egypt none-dare-call-it-coup. On the other hand: John Kerry went yachting, instead of getting involved in the Egypt none-dare-call-it-coup. And on the gripping hand: I had and have precisely zero confidence in Susan Rice when it comes to any sort of foreign affairs involving the continent of Africa. To use the classic military formulation*: John Kerry is Stupid/Lazy; Rice is Stupid/Energetic. Which is to say: Kerry can be counted on at least to generally not deliberately go out and do something (and thus mess things up); you would have been able to count on Rice to do precisely that.
Over the past several decades, women have asserted a right to make all the judgments in matters of gender and sexuality. And, in fact, we do "facilitate" destructive choices, when they're by women. We subsidize unwed mothers, we give women a pass on sexual behavior that would be considered predatory if it were done by males, we give them all sorts of "choice" that men don't have and then absolve them, culturally and legally, from judgment over the way they exercise those choices. No similar dispensation is given to men.A society that ran according to Ann Althouse's views on marriage and commitment might, in fact, be a better one than the one we live in now, but it is most definitely not the one we live in now. Observing that, and noting the unfairnesses involved, is not "victimology" - though given how successful women have been in obtaining power via victimology, no one should be surprise if men start to give it a try.
But I do not believe that women deserve a monopoly in determining what views on gender and sexuality and parenting are acceptable. Why would they?
What's funny is that so many women seem genuinely perplexed that men would even dispute that monopoly. Ann is a thoughtful and open-minded and smart woman, but at some level I feel like she doesn't really get it.

Those guys who dies in the plane crash, I read about that one time. The plane crashed right after take off, about 1 am on a freezing winter night. The people at the airport didn't know it crashed and didn't go looking for them until the next morning, about 7 hours after the crash.
If the crash didn't kill them, I guess they froze to death. It was a horrible way to die.

That "Savage" doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to defensive carry of handguns should come as no surprise. He knows nothing about anything. The farthest distance in the continental US from a public road is only around 22 miles.
The only place you can be 22 miles away from a paved road in the contiguous states is a spot in the southeast corner of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

MSNBC host Rev. Al Sharpton weighed in with his thoughts on the trajectory of the George Zimmerman trial on Wednesday after a medical examiner testified about the nature of the fatal wounds he inflicted on Florida teen, Trayvon Martin, in 2012. Sharpton said that it made little sense to him that Zimmerman did not use his recent training in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to incapacitate Martin during their struggle and instead used his firearm.
The stupidity burns.
This, by the way, is why we need to stop coddling kids in school. A couple of school yard fights are generally enough to teach anyone why it's a bad idea to go hand to hand.

This.
I've been on perfectly paved modern roads in various parts of the North American interior where you could drive for a LONG way in either direction and not find so much as a ramshackle hut.
It tends to throw for a loop some people from more urbanized parts of the world. "Well, we're out of fuel, and we don't have any food or water, but we're on a nice highway. So someone will come along."
Someone eventually does come along.

...Maddie, slowly, gets to be Maddie again!
I've cried tears for you and that little girl, sir. Tonight is no different. I've got time enough to let loose my prayers for that child of God.
Our wholesome prayers, amongst them, tosimply ask of God's Will. I simply ask for prayers for the most innocent amongst us. I merely ask of someone else to get upon one's knees and ask Of God His Will.
Should those amongst the horde be unwilling, I ask them to break this stubbornness. Should they find themselves upon their knees asking only for one cause, I pray for one innocent little girl.
I pray for God and Country. I pray for the indigent. I pray to Thank You for what I've had, what I have and what I may receive. I pray for those who have lost their lives to allow me to pray in the manner I'm accustomed.
May God Bless those who Ask.

Conclusion: Zimmerman is convicted.

As for the Zimmerman thing yea there probably will be riots. But there are riot, riots and riots. The regime would like nothing better than MLK assasination level riots, they won't get them. Rodney King level riots, localized but bad would be nice for 2014, but they won't get those either. What they are likely to get are basketball local riots in Florida. At best! Like it or not there is simply to much data input going on for the Zimmerman case to gain much traction.

You have *no* idea how many adults I know with fully grown adult children who continue to routinely give in and thus reinforce said tantrum behavior among said adult children.
It is a significant and widely based problem. Though some resist it.
A friend of mine said, "When my oldest is eighteen, he gets kicked out the front gate with a stone-tipped spear and a cured bearskin, and he better not ever come back here."
I said, "Isn't that a bit harsh?"
He said, "No. Harsh would be out the gate at fourteen. I would know."

Especially with California women, who basically make up their mind in the first five seconds they see your face/body whether they like you or not. If they don't, it honestly doesn't matter what you say, do, or how funny you are. If you're judged a creep, you're just a creep, now and forever, and nothing can ever change that.
Plus like I said earlier, women will file stalking charges against you just for being in the same room as they are, if they find you even slightly annoying.

My favorite John Kerry story is about how he gave a long impassioned speech in Brookline about how we all had to be more giving and less selfish.
That very same year, which was before he hooked up with the loaded Widow Heinz, Lurch donated a grand total of $50 to charity. And bought himself a flashy new top of the line Ducati motorcycle.
Not that I object to people owning Ducatis. I do object to people who earn more than I do buying a Ducati, while telling me I'm a selfish piece of shit, and while donating less than I did to charity that year.
My second favorite John Kerry story is how he gave a long impassioned speech about how we all needed to "chip in a bit more" in taxes. And having had it then come out that he was domiciling his yacht over the state border to avoid the Asshole-twoshits state tax bite.

She was okay at what she did, but inexperienced. Somewhat empathetic, but still tried sometimes to leak in the feminist "you need to understand about women" stuff. I would listen, then tell her I already knew that stuff, and I was still judged a knuckledragging woman-hater at my last job for annoying a co-worker. I don't know if I ever got through to her about that or not. I really tried to explain to her what it's like to be a lonely 40-something year-old guy these days, and all the resulting frustrations, but I'm not sure that got through either.
On top of that, she was still in school and had to work on her PhD, so she could only see me for about a year. Since then I haven't been able to afford counseling anyway, but dang if that wasn't one of the quickest years of my life.

I've been through nowhere in NV, on US 50, US 6, and US 95. If your vehicle isn't in a running condition that you would consider dependable, don't drive those routes. Fellow travelers are few and far between, especially on US 6 between Tonopah and Ely, and US 95 between Hawthorne and Beatty.
And it's worth mentioning that the local constabulary in Tonopah just luuuv to issue speeding tickets to people passing through, with extra attention given to vehicles with non-NV plates.

I caught a news article two or three years ago about how rural counties all over the USA, which once prided themselves on having put in sealed-surface asphalt roads as a mark of progress, are ripping them out and replacing them with gravelled roads. Simply as a cost-expedient measure.
They are not in a hurry to advertise having done this.

Only 44 hours in the 777?
So then, there is a pretty good chance that he'd never landed one of those beasts, manually, before.

---------
I've seen this firsthand, torquewrench.
Asphalt roads degrade rather quickly from the heat...and then add to that, the freezing temps in the winter...
Before long, the surface breaks up into little chunks.
It's easier to take a road grader and just scrape it all off, leaving a smooth dirt surface that can be graded again.
Some of the more-traveled dirt roads will get a 'squirt top'.
That's a layer of oil, sprayed onto the surface, which hardens it.
I don't know what road maps or data they used for that 'Middle of Nowhere' map...but it doesn't reflect what you will find in rural Oklahoma.

Here's why women drive men nuts.
"I've lost my necklace. Help me look for it."
"OK"
Three hours of upending the house later with all the associated drama:
"OK -- what EXACTLY does this necklace look like?"
"Well, it's gold, in a small satchel and it's wrapped in a piece of toilette paper."
*then perhaps you should have said we're looking for a wad of tp, rather than a necklace as such?*
Also:
"When I put it down, I told myself I'll never remember where I left this."
*Well, got that right*

I also have a brother-in-law who, when he has the spare time, loves to mess with door-to-door salespeople. His shtick usually goes as follows:
1. Answer the door and let them go through their ENTIRE spiel.
2. Act dumb 'n slow. Ask questions that were obviously already addressed and will force them to basically go through their entire spiel over again, but out of order.
3. Ask them about stuff that will obviously put them in the position of having to say "no." For instance, if they're selling carpet cleaning, ask them if they'll do your car. When they say no, ask them if they'll do someone else's car. When they say no to that too, ask them if they'll do your relative's house that's 500 miles away. And so on.
4. Finally, after the salesperson is obviously exhausted, give them a glimmer of hope by saying something nice about their product, then tell 'em you have to find your wallet. Ask them to wait while you shut the door. Then never come back.

While waiting for the BH to "refresh herself" on Friday after a "big loop", I got into a discussion with another couple who had also just come off the hill, and they talked about a parallel trail we hadn't previously tried, so we tried it today. We were pretty sure that we'd seen the top and bottom [and it turned out that we had] but we didn't know before if it was pot-smoking kids wandering into the undergrowth or whatever since it had no signage.
Now, part of the thing about hiking in the Santa Cruz Mountains is just knowing where you are and what you're doing, even if you know what park you're in -- so you get nicknames. If there is a loop trail in a park, people generally approach it clockwise -- so it is the "waterfall loop" if you hike that way. We had a joke about hiking it counterclockwise -- if someone fell off the edge, your emergency call needed to include: "pleH! pleH! em eucseR! em eucseR!"....so if we hike up the Peterson Trail and come down through the campgrounds on the Sanborn, that's an "em eucser". A "big loop" is going up the Sanborn Trail past the Peterson Trail junction and down the San Andreas Trail.
But the trail we were on today had no name -- despite, oddly, being on the map. In the future, the BH and I have agreed to call it the "chainsaw trail", being as it could surely use some -- there are fallen trees across the trail in many spots. It became a joke early on in the process -- we'd characterize spots with obstacles as "over, over, around, over, under, over" or "under, around, over, around, over".
Despite feeling like an obstacle course, it was a very beautiful hike and a tad less grueling than the normal Peterson Trail (not because it had less steep parts or was shorter, but because it alternated between hard/soft).
So that's why I'm aching this evening.

The hubby has back and hip and knee issues.
Hiking forever closed to us ...
But we can make ourselves sore crawling around on the floor aligning stencils
So floor painted, stencils painted
Left to do: seal floor, paint baseboard ...
Painting in 80+ paint dries on stencil so no smearing, paint dries in tray constantly needing paint ...

The BH and I went diving in Honduras, Fiji, Hawaii, SoCal, Puerto Rico....until she got bent hard and one of the world's experts recommended that she not dive again.....as in, when Dr. Overlock says, "eh, I don't think so.....", who the hell do you call for a second opinion?
The thing about hiking, though, is that it tends to inspire you to surpass your limits. We took my aunt to Muir Woods and walked up along the main path, then came down a more adventuresome trail (though it was mainly downhill) shortly after her knee surgery. As we got reasonably close to the visitor center, she said that she probably couldn't do a mile....and we informed her that she'd already done two. Doing treadmills and stairs and sidewalks is hard on a body in ways that winding trails, obstacles, and pauses to enjoy scenery are not.

Well I can breathe, that has to be good for something. Hopefully it improves the alacrity of my posts, although probably it just means I can maintain coherence for 15 seconds instead of 10. We gain where we can.

Indeed...it is stunning that political power lays with those scavenging a better standard of living than those working through the safety hammock...

Sven,
Granted, this is PURELY anecdotal, based on 5 trips to this place but no shit, I've wondered a time or two if the metro-sexualization of seemingly many of the 30 and below male crowd has turned off many of the women here. Hasn't it been shown that humans generally respond to similar biological traits in the opposite sex? (strength, fertility, health, etc).

No your post made sense, if women or men were looking for greater similarity to their own gender norms they'd be well "San Fran ready."
Anyway thank Horrywood and the collusion between academia and media.

Good Morning, Horde!
I can't speak about the under 30 crowd, but for this old broad, nothing makes a man sexier than dish pan hands. We have a lot of fun horsing around together cleaning up the kitchen.
