4 Things Every Modern Man Should Be Able to Do

4. Build a fire

3. Run a mile

2. Change a car tire

1. Divide up a bill

And speaking of changing tires you should go listen to the first 20 minutes of Adam Carolla's recent podcast where a July 4th flat tire with a non-driving teenage nephew turns into a Thurberesque nightmare.

Oh Rand What Were You Thinking?

I've wanted to unreservedly like Rand but have ended up staying a bit wary of him - mainly because I'm afraid he had a bit too much of his father's kookiness in him as well as his father's tendency to surround himself with questionable people with rather disreputable views.

And this doesn't help:

A close aide to Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.) who co-wrote the senator's 2011 book spent years working as a pro-secessionist radio pundit and neo-Confederate activist, raising questions about whether Paul will be able to transcend the same fringe-figure associations that dogged his father's political career.

Paul hired Jack Hunter, 39, to help write his book The Tea Party Goes to Washington during his 2010 Senate run. Hunter joined Paul's office as his social media director in August 2012.

From 1999 to 2012, Hunter was a South Carolina radio shock jock known as the "Southern Avenger." He has weighed in on issues such as racial pride and Hispanic immigration, and stated his support for the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

During public appearances, Hunter often wore a mask on which was printed a Confederate flag.

And Hunter sure seems to share the same political preoccupation with neoconservatives as Paul Sr:

That Pesky 3rd Amendment

You rarely hear about it since soldiers generally aren't quartered in peoples' homes without consent these days.

Except maybe in Henderson, NV:

LAS VEGAS (CN) - Henderson police arrested a family for refusing to let officers use their homes as lookouts for a domestic violence investigation of their neighbors, the family claims in court.

Anthony Mitchell and his parents Michael and Linda Mitchell sued the City of Henderson, its Police Chief Jutta Chambers, Officers Garret Poiner, Ronald Feola, Ramona Walls, Angela Walker, and Christopher Worley, and City of North Las Vegas and its Police Chief Joseph Chronister, in Federal Court.
Mitchell claims that defendant officers, including Cawthorn and Worley and Sgt. Michael Waller then "conspired among themselves to force Anthony Mitchell out of his residence and to occupy his home for their own use."

A third amendment suit is a bit of a stretch since you'd have to show that local police count as soldiers and that the 3A applies to state and local governments. However when you read the sordid egregious details of the case I think a fourth amendment case is more applicable.

The complaint continues: "Defendant Officer David Cawthorn outlined the defendants' plan in his official report: 'It was determined to move to 367 Evening Side and attempt to contact Mitchell. If Mitchell answered the door he would be asked to leave. If he refused to leave he would be arrested for Obstructing a Police Officer. If Mitchell refused to answer the door, force entry would be made and Mitchell would be arrested.'"

At a few minutes before noon, at least five defendant officers "arrayed themselves in front of plaintiff Anthony Mitchell's house and prepared to execute their plan," the complaint states.

It continues: "The officers banged forcefully on the door and loudly commanded Anthony Mitchell to open the door to his residence.
"Surprised and perturbed, plaintiff Anthony Mitchell immediately called his mother (plaintiff Linda Mitchell) on the phone, exclaiming to her that the police were beating on his front door.
"Seconds later, officers, including Officer Rockwell, smashed open plaintiff Anthony Mitchell's front door with a metal ram as plaintiff stood in his living room.
"As plaintiff Anthony Mitchell stood in shock, the officers aimed their weapons at Anthony Mitchell and shouted obscenities at him and ordered him to lie down on the floor.
"Fearing for his life, plaintiff Anthony Mitchell dropped his phone and prostrated himself onto the floor of his living room, covering his face and hands.
"Addressing plaintiff as 'asshole', officers, including Officer Snyder, shouted conflicting orders at Anthony Mitchell, commanding him to both shut off his phone, which was on the floor in front of his head, and simultaneously commanding him to 'crawl' toward the officers.
"Confused and terrified, plaintiff Anthony Mitchell remained curled on the floor of his living room, with his hands over his face, and made no movement.
"Although plaintiff Anthony Mitchell was lying motionless on the ground and posed no threat, officers, including Officer David Cawthorn, then fired multiple 'pepperball' rounds at plaintiff as he lay defenseless on the floor of his living room. Anthony Mitchell was struck at least three times by shots fired from close range, injuring him and causing him severe pain." (Parentheses in complaint.)

Remember this was all because police wanted to spy on the Mitchells' neighbors over a domestic violence complaint.

The NYT Attempts Geography

Fact checkin' is hard. Can you spot the error is this diagram?

22mayberry-web-map-popup

And speaking of Mayberry: Andy Taylor and the Coercive Power of the State

Andy Taylor? Readers with long memories may remember that he is the character played by Andy Griffith in the long-running eponymous television show from the Sixties (the good bit of the Sixties). As sheriff of the town of Mayberry, Andy is responsible for maintaining order - no, that's not quite right: the townspeople are responsible for maintaining order. Andy is simply a sort of boundary marker. He represents what Walter Bagehot might have called the impressive side of the social contract. He has a sidearm. He rarely wears it. It's usually at home, unloaded, hidden on top of a china cabinet. He barely wears a uniform. That's to say, his uniform is homey, not scary.

Why? Because he wished people to trust and respect him and not fear him; he was an authority, not an authoritarian figure. His sidekick, the lovable but bumbling Barney Fife, likes the paraphernalia of police garb. Andy lets him wear a revolver, but it has to be unloaded. He's allowed to carry one round of ammunition in his shirt pocket.

Compare this to what happens when you go fishing in Effingham, Illinois today:

I took 3 of my grandchildren jug fishing (tie string to a milk jug, attach a hook and bait and set them in the water, come back hours later and bring in the fish). This was a first for my kids. We left about 9:00 p.m., and after setting out two of the jugs we got stopped by two officers from Illinois Department of Natural Resources (appropriately shortened to DNR). They were going to do a safety check. They had guns, dressed as Gestapo, and had bulletproof vests.

As you'll see there is no Andy Taylor or even Barney Fife in the IL DNR.

Ah That Sweet Sweet Tolerance

Guantánamo prison will synchronize force-feedings to Ramadan fast

"The U.S. prison at Guantánamo has sufficient military medical staff to synchronize forced-feedings to the Ramadan fast and will only feed hunger strikers after sunset and before dawn,"

I guess I'm supposed to feel bad about this but eh whatever. I've never been impressed by hunger strikers - to me it's always been a form of blackmail and a particularly stupid form of suicide but hey if you wanna starve yourself go right on ahead. Less money for us to spend keeping your dumb ass living and bitching. And if we decide to keep to keep you alive, well then you're just gonna have to keep on living motherfucker. Oh and happy Ramadan.

That Time Jennifer Aniston Ate Poor People Food

And it was just horrible - however do the proles survive on that stuff?

Have you ever been in a situation where you had no other choice but to grab some fast food?

I'll never forget when Justin and I were on a road trip and we were so hungry. The only thing around was McDonald's. I think I ordered a Big Mac. Wow, my body did not react well to that! It was like putting gasoline in a purified system. I am always trying to eat organic and natural foods, so that just made my stomach turn and made me feel terrible. And I think what you put in your body, as well as stress, is reflected in the quality of your skin.

12 Don't call it IT .. it's really MIS. Only a MIS-manager could do this ...

The Economic Development Administration (EDA) is an agency in the Department of Commerce that promotes economic development in regions of the US suffering slow growth, low employment, and other economic problems. In December 2011, the Department of Homeland Security notified both the EDA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that there was a possible malware infection within the two agencies' systems.

The NOAA isolated and cleaned up the problem within a few weeks.

The EDA, however, responded by cutting its systems off from the rest of the world—disabling its enterprise e-mail system and leaving its regional offices no way of accessing centrally held databases.

It then recruited an outside security contractor to look for malware and provide assurances that not only were EDA's systems clean, but also that they were impregnable against malware. The contractor, after some initial false positives, declared the systems largely clean but was unable to provide this guarantee. Malware was found on six systems, but it was easily repaired by reimaging the affected machines.

EDA's CIO, fearing that the agency was under attack from a nation-state, insisted instead on a policy of physical destruction. The EDA destroyed not only (uninfected) desktop computers but also printers, cameras, keyboards, and even mice. The destruction only stopped—sparing $3 million of equipment—because the agency had run out of money to pay for destroying the hardware.

The total cost to the taxpayer of this incident was $2.7 million: $823,000 went to the security contractor for its investigation and advice, $1,061,000 for the acquisition of temporary infrastructure (requisitioned from the Census Bureau), $4,300 to destroy $170,500 in IT equipment, and $688,000 paid to contractors to assist in development of a long-term response. Full recovery took close to a year.

My tip for Modern Real Manly Men about changing tires: make sure the goddamned tire/brake/suspension shop has put the lug nuts back on to the actual specified torque. As my monicker might suggest is important.

I once helped a friend attempt to change a flat on his truck. The moronic shop monkey who had previously worked on it had reinstalled the wheel with a monster air impact wrench dialed all the way up to whatever the max setting was.

We ended up with a three foot breaker bar on the lug nut, and a ten foot pipe slipped over the breaker bar, and my 250lb friend bouncing up and down on the far end of the pipe, and that nut wasn't moving until Jesus returned.

For a $41 lunch bill that we are splitting, I leave $25 on the table (x 2 would equal $50), but he throws out $35 because he has to show me up and declare "I believe in tipping." So do I. 20%.

78 I've never, ever witnessed a judge so openly hostile to one side. She's a family court judge brought up from single A to The Show. Family court judge positions are patronage jobs reserved for the ungifted. So she probably just defaults to favoring the state but throws a bone to the defense now and then. Seemingly at random. Because real judgin' is hard. Also, the JEF is probably on her bucket list. It's a mandingo thing, you wouldn't understand.

One time I was stuck at a restaurant for half an hour or so because 3/4 of a group of about 20 left, and they were the types that threw in $20 to cover their $17 entree and $2 soda. So the remainder had to cover their cheap asses. Even worse, it seemed the poorer amongst us were much less chintzy than the rich kids.

122 oh, one pernicious thing about group checks: sometimes certain people have cash and others have credit, and so forth. so the deal ends with somebody handing the waiter the billfold with, say, $500 cash and "the rest on the card". So the waiter takes the cash, runs the card for $50, and hands it back to the guy who writes in a $10.00 tip on his $50.00 bill. Don't be that guy, because the bill is not $50, it's $550. And thus, the waiter did not just make no money that night, he managed to lose money (he's got to tip out, pay taxes calc'd on his sales, etc). This happens with disturbing frequency. If you are the guy managing the billfold in that situation, do it right, man. no excuses, do not fail.

The Second Amendment has now been incorporated.  It is now used as a club to bludgeon any state that dares to write its own gun laws.  The First Amendment has been incorporated.  You donÂ’t have freedom of religion to pray in your own public ceremonies. The Fourth and Fifth Amendments donÂ’t even exist any longer, see the NSA and partially-warrantless surveillance.  All these amendments have been incorporated.

Hell - Neocons - you love your big Gov overlords so much why not just Incorporate Every Constitutional Amendment And Be Done With It?

Wake up.

The flipside of that is that we regularly went out with a friend who used his credit card while we used cash, and he pocketed the cash and put the whole bill on the card. It doesn't sound so bad but we were always convinced that he was ultimately contributing a bit less than than the rest of us when you added it all up.

--------------

He may very well have been if he was paying the card off every month (so no interest) and was getting cash back on the charge.

162 The statement that "Zimmerman will never be safe" is an indictment of what this country has become. We are not a nation of laws, but a nation of mobs. The accumulation of mistakes, and both stupid and malevolent decisions, has doomed us, and as someone pointed out in another thread, we are already in the death spiral. We're past the point of no return. That said, if there are riots, a class action suit should be brought against the specific MSM organizations that fanned the flames. They acted irresponsibly and should be held partially responsible for any deaths and property damage. The actual rioters should just be lynched on the spot.

It's like she's a jewel thief who maps out our every outing and runs all possible permutations through a supercomputer to assure her personal victory. Decades ago at a  multi-couples dinner  held  at an upscale restaurant,  the organizer and  his wife are ordering appetizers and bottles of wine.  Top menu items for  their   entrees.    Being of modest means at that time and a noted tightwad,  I suggest to wife that we eat downscale.   We splurge on a shared dessert.  Organizer and his wife each have desserts  and a  final bottle of dessert wine.  For them.

Bill comes and the organizer suggests splitting the bill evenly.  *ragetwitch* begins.  I throw in enough to cover our modest meal, tax and tip.  When the pot comes up light, I pull a Ralphie Parker - "Flick?  Flick who?"

On the way home I instruct the wife to never  ever again accept a dinner invitation from those people.  Don't expect me to subsidize your extravagant meal when I hardly even know you.

Don't relax too much.  Savannah is way past due for a major hurricane.  The locals laugh, but the last major hit was in the last 19th century.  Tybee Island had a train that ran from downtown Savannah to folks' summer homes.  A hurricane hit that evening, wiping out the rail system, and killing hundreds of people on Tybee.

We are constantly reminded that a Cat 2 storm at high tide would wipe out our homes due to flooding, not to mention tall pines through our roofs.  So there's that.

These locations are typically the homes or businesses of suspected unsafe gun owners, but might also be public lands or other locations where guns are not handled safely, or situations where proper rights to own or use any particular type of firearm may not exist. Electronically marking these locations can help others in the area learn about their geography of risk from gun accidents or violence Amazing how many libtards unlawfully own or are unsafe gun owners. Bill being introduced to repeal Common Core http://tinyurl.com/m45o2rs While it's generally understood Gov Kasich supports Common Core, this can send an important message to those who want to completely federalize education in this country (if you don't believe that's what CC is about, you are an idiot and can stop reading here). Anybody with kids in public schools who has even seen an early inkling of what CCSS is about will tell you this is a Big Deal, and must be stopped.

Last I heard, she still imports Evian water from France to wash her face (she doesn't trust LA water) and yet she's still imploring all us rubes and proles to conserve resources.   I have changed tires beyond counting in my career.  Tightening lug nuts was first done with a 4-way wrench.

A torque wrench was used to finish the job.

In later years, we used an air wrench, with a special tool called a torque limiting socket, that stopped the gun at the specified tightness.   If you do several jobs requiring wheel removal, they rock.

Techs who refuse to use these tools need to be removed from the workplace.

262 Don't relax too much. *** Dora in, 64, was the last near-direct hit by a hurricane here. People like to say "I was here and it was nothing" which is complete crap. It destroyed the beaches communities. That same storm, today, would be a disaster because we have over built in so many areas and the drainage is bad as it is. We would have a real mess on our hands.

A real man knows how to handle a fight and when to walk away from one.

A real man knows how to tie a bow tie or a windsor knot, owns at least one shirt with french cuffs, has a shoe polish kit and keys his clothing choices to the occasion and his escort's level of dressiness.  He knows the basics of social dancing and can lead his partner.

A real man knows how to find the fat man in the bathtub and knows the evening isn't over until everyone is happy.

A real man will not let a woman pay for him unless she asks him out and even then, will insist on at least leaving the gratuity.

A real man conducts himself with integrity, honesty and humor, understands reciprocity, and handles rejection with grace and dignity.

Sadly, my Real Man died four years ago and every time I try dating I am reminded of what I lost!!

307 286 A real man knows how to fix a flat, stop a leak, wire a lamp, handle a circular saw or a drill, shoot a gun, and hang a shelf properly. As an exasperated woman friend told the guys hanging around her at a party, "A guy should know how to FIX stuff!" A real man knows how to handle a fight and when to walk away from one. Posted by: vivi at July 09, 2013 11:02 PM (+/8mE) You poor thing. My heart goes out to you. I want one that can change a tire..., as the wheels are about to come off.

I've changed so many ties in my life, I don't care to think about it. As for the motorcycle thing, I date from a time when all motorcycle wheels had spokes, and tube type tires. To fix a flat, it was necessary to remove the wheel, remove the tire, patch the tube (If you were lucky. I always carried a spare tube), remount tire, reinstall wheel. It was a hassle, and inevitably happened at the worst time/place.

The CSA's constitution was, despite what you may expect, a document that reduced states' rights.  It didn't allow states to determine voting laws, nor allow states to outlaw slavery on their own accord.  Additionally, it allowed the Confederate national government to impose tariffs on goods FROM a state going to another state or country.

Just got back from my local game store with a few bits of Pacific Rim loot.  Let's see what I ended up with...

The "Starter box" comes with Gypsy Danger (giant robot) and a weird freaky looking kaiju called "Slattern" (it has multiple tails made out of soft plastic).  The individual packs that I got contain Crimson Typhoon (giant robot - his head makes him look kind of like a big red Geth Destroyer from Mass Effect), Cherno Alpha (giant robot - his head looks like one of the helmets from Marvel's evil AIM organization), Scunner (kaiju with four arms), and another Slattern.  Too bad.  I'd expected (apparently incorrectly) that the figures in the starter box wouldn't be in the random assortment packs.  Guess I was wrong.

The starter does have other stuff, though that's only useful if you want to play the game and blow up the human war machines (like tanks and fighter jets) like popcorn.  If you just want to drool over the figures or stick them up as trophies on your bookshelf, then those items aren't quite so useful.

There are apparently ten figures in total - five robots and five kaiju.

The downside (and the reason I quit) is that you are always working for attorneys, and quite naturally they are are looking to support their client. The result is that the engineers are leaned on to find some scenario that exempts the client. Well..., in many cases the client was an indefensible idiot. The problem is that the forensic guys begin to take on the lawyer's perspectives. They begin to rationalize and bullshit. Posted by: nerdygirl at July 09, 2013 07:43 PM (DpI6K)

462 I'm fairly certain that 7 hours between issuance of license and first accident has to be some form of record.

Twenty-five years ago, I went to help a buddy move around some garage-sale leftovers. Among them was a v.early stereo that appealed to me. So, after we'd worked a couple of hours, he gave it to me, and we gingerly set it in the back of my pickup.

On the way home, a crackhead ran a stop sign, T-boned my truck and ran me into a nice lady who, as it turned out, never worked again. Screwed up the stereo, and my truck was never the same. Crackhead never stopped.

Behind me in traffic was a girl who had just taken her driver's test. At the urging  of her husband, she pulled out of traffic and pursued the offender about a mile, up a dodgy alleyway, and pinned him in his garage. And then the two of them came to testify in court. Offender had a public defender who advised him not to show, and skip town. He did, and no warrant was issued.

Anyway, that has to be some kind of a record.

554 Ok folks, between teen angst and another bottle of The Federalist Zinfandel, I'm winding down. So I shall bid you adieu til it be morrow. If you are curious about it, The Federalist has Alexander Hamilton on the label. It is from Healdsburg, CA. Website is TheFederalistZin.com They are supposed to be producing a new wine called Dueling Pistols, which is a zin syrah blend and obviously the name and label are a tribute to Hamilton and Burr. The Federalist Chardonnay is in honor of John Adams. Haven't tried the latter two yet but the zin is marvelous and available at Kroger as well as most wine stores, at least in TX.

Some of the really good ones can sidle-up friendly before going for the bear-hold, so I had hopes going in.....but the evidence currently looks like (by probability): 70% -- never had "fire in the belly" in the first place; 25% -- NSA gave him a "special briefing"; 5% -- "Life. Loathe it or ignore it. You can't like it."

A guy in my church is has a mutual friend with Fred, and the mutual friend once told the guy in my church that Fred was a great guy but as lazy as they come - "had never done a complete day's work in his life" is as close to the exact quote as I can remember so many years later.

They should be telling other Guantanamo inmates "he told us everything, so we shipped him home", dressing him nice, feeding him well, and flying him off without handcuffs or leg irons.....then getting out into the mid-Atlantic, handcuffing his sorry ass to a cinderblock, and chuckin' 'im off the plane. Come back a couple of days later and tell the remaining inmates, "here's some baklava his girlfriends sent you, because they're so happy to have him back."

Lather, rinse, repeat. Once the place is emptied out, show film of all the happy waving when they got on the plane. That's how the Russians work, and it's effective as all hell.

Hanging out with neo-confederate secessionists is roughly equivalent to Obama's relationship with the likes of Ayers and Dorn, which is a shame since I was holding out some hope that Rand Paul would be of a different stripe than his old man, but the evidence keeps piling up that he's no different and perhaps even worse than Ron Paul because he's a far more effective communicator than his father and doesn't give off that wild-eyed, tinfoil-hat vibe. But yeah, that 'neocon' business. Ugly little euphemism they've got going there.

The ironic part of all this is that the libertarian core message, which is 'leave the people the hell alone' has enormous appeal. If libertarians would just throw off and disavow the antisemitism, the outlandish conspiracy theories and all the rest of that paranoid and racist Spotlight, Prison Planet, Stormfront bullshit, they might have a chance at contributing something of value at a national level, but they haven't and they won't. Paranoia seems woven into the libertarian DNA.

Wasn't addressing you, whoever you are, and don't care whether or not you're a Libertarian or a Republican. But yes, of course there are other types of nutjobs in other political parties, which is why I compared Rand Paul's relationship to a neo-confederate secessionist to Obama's relationship with former Weathermen terrorists Ayers and Dorn. There's an equivalency there.

However, big 'L' Libertarians--particularly Ron Paul libertarians--have batshit craziness imbedded into their overall worldview and political ideology, which is why the Libertarian Party continues to enjoy its 1-2% niche in state and national elections. For example, get a Ron Paul true believer talking about Iran. According to Ron Paul and his followers, Iran is just an innocent, persecuted victim of evil neoconservatives *cough Jooos cough*.  According to Ron Paul, the mullahs of Iran are only pursuing weapons-grade nuclear capabilities because we drove them to it, and so on.

Whatever you might think of Ron Paul's (and presumably Rand Paul's) beliefs regarding sound money and adherence to Constitutional principles, Paulian foreign policy ideas are irrational, fringe, non-fact-based, tinfoil-hat nonsense.

711 I think they should make the case that the police have become "militarized", and are no longer acting as "law enforcement", but as paramilitary units without proper legal authority. They did barge into these homes without warrants in a paramilitary fashion, and in their own words, to gain a "tactical" advantage. If the police want to become militarized with all the advantages that come with that, then they should be governed by the 3rd Amendment.
