Overnight Open Thread (7 Sep 2013)
— CDR M

Man, if we go forward with a military misadventure into Syria, I think that it would crack the top 10 on this list of worst military decisions in history especially if some of the worse case scenarios develop after the strike. Already, the President is micromanaging the Syrian target list as LBJ did (#2 on the list) in Vietnam. Vicarious

One of my favorite Tool songs done 300 style.

Lame Excuse

So how long is the President going to run with the "I only hear about things from the media" as it pertains to departments/agencies under his control? At what point is he held responsible? Or anyone in those departments for that matter? Obama learns what the NSA is up to through the press.

An AFP reporter asked Obama to respond to the most recent NSA leaks that officials in Brazil and Mexico were being spied on.

“I said that I would look into the allegations,” Obama said. “I mean, part of the problem here is we get these through the press and then I've got to go back and find out what’s going on with respect to these particular allegations - I don’t subscribe to all these newspapers, although I think the NSA does - now at least.

If Obama has to wait for the press to publish a leak before he'll go and find out what's going on, then he's not doing his job. It's not very Presidential to look like you don't know the extent of one of the most damaging leaks in U.S. history. Of course, it's a pretty stupid statement to make when we all know the press does not publish anything without getting approval from the White House. He is their chosen one.

Sexual Harassment

Poor guy. Probably NSFW.

Drone Humor

Yeah, yeah, it's always fun and games until you scalp yourself with a drone, but here are some humorous things to do with drones.

House Demolition

I figure it is far easier to get away with this in the Detroit area but never underestimate the ability of the government to eff it away. Crews demolish the wrong house in Pontiac because one home owner switched the address numbers with the house next door. In the end, both homes got schwacked.

Parkour

Based on the video game Mirror's Edge.

Gun Mailbox

I'm sure this N.J. man's mailbox will be banned in 3...2...1...

The Bodyguard

Lady Gaga bodyguard tazed to death after naked cocaine rampage.

So the late Norman Oosterbroek, 43, who was a bodyguard for the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Jay-Z, recently broke into a neighborÂ’s house in Miami. He was naked and started beating up the homeowner, and when the cops arrived and tazed him, he ended up having a fatal heart attack from the combination of drugs and high voltage.

Supposedly, he was beating up the homeowner with one hand, and feeding himself drugs with the other.

17 Racial Justice Consultant The ridiculousness of “gender” studies degrees has been rightly mocked before, especially when they holders of those degrees can’t get a real job. This mockery readily extends to the various racial and LGBTQ studies programs, as well as the various “critical theory” courses of studies. The mockery on the internet included asking if the expected jobs included “patriarchy investigator,” a “professional privilege checker,” or a “victim complex denial specialist.” It turns out that these lunatics actually believe in getting jobs just like that! 31 Good evening, Horde. We went to the range today. I'm not very good with my pistol yet but I'll shoot the bad guy dead with the rifle. It's only a .22 but I liked it just fine. Haven't shot a long gun in 25 years. We think there may have been something wrong with the .22 ammo; it jammed three times. Dave actually has to field strip it to clear a spent casing jammed in it. Unhappy about that. Saw the most ahmaaaaazing innovation at the range store - a rifle case which FLOATS. To prevent those unfortunate boating accidents. I think my pistol needs a name. Taking suggestions. It's a kicky little Smith and Wesson SD9VE.

99 Also... I can't wait till O starts WWIII in the hopes of distracting us from our upcoming economic doom.

Of course, starting a war with China/ Russia will stop them from buying our debt, in fact, they'll sell it and indeed, will make the collapse and our permanent foray into totalitarianism even quicker.

What's that phrase? Never let a crisis go to waste? I guess if the crisis isn't big enough, you have to create one.

103 We think there may have been something wrong with the .22 ammo; it jammed three times. Dave actually has to field strip it to clear a spent casing jammed in it. Unhappy about that. Posted by: Gingy at September 07, 2013 10:16 PM (aH+zP) Most guns are picky about ammo brands. Often the problem is using low-powered target ammo in rifles or high-powered varmit ammo in target pistols. But it could just be picky. Ideally a good smith should be able to tune it to work with almost everything, but the ideal is rare. I know people have a hard time finding ammo but try different brands if you can. Look on forums for that model to see if it tends to prefer a brand/type.

Add in that the Poles had the reds on the ropes in 1920, when the bolshies were still struggling with the whites, but, for political resons the Poles and the whites failed to form an alliance and finish off the reds once and for all. The world is still paying for that unfinished job.

We put a hundred grab bag rounds through the rifle with no problem, no jams ( grab bag means that my grandfather stored them all in a large salt shaker. Really. All kinds of different .22 rounds. ). When we moved on the the 100 Winchester Super X plinking rounds that I purchased at the range, there were 3 jams before we went through 50. The last one I couldn't clear at the range. I just pulled it out of the barrel and the bullet is unseated from the casing. New Winchester ammo. I've got 50 rounds left and I don't know if I trust them. Anyhow, I haven't been shooting in a while. I was putting the entire mag inside the 9 ring at 15 yards with a pistol I've never shot before, and all 16 shots from the .22 in a 3" grouping at 25 yards using iron sights. That's not great, but it's been 3-4 years since I last went to the range so at least I know I haven't forgotten how. It'll get the job done against a home intruder anyway. Fun afternoon.

Oh well.

If the machine shipped with an AGP slot, it has to be pretty vintage. Even a very cheap second-hand system would likely a be a fair bit more modern and a better application of any funds you might apply to getting the old one restored.

Meanwhile, check out the motherboard for any identifying text. Even an FCC number will let you look up the board and get an idea which exact driver you need.

The biggest problem with going ahead in Syria is that the good men and women of our US Armed Forces will have to pay the price. I think the Lightworker and Assad should just have a duel on the front lawn of the White House. Pay Per View, it would help pay off the national debt as well, so two birds and all that.

I'm only five feet tall so I don't want anything too heavy but I also don't want something that kicks like a mule. Posted by: lindafell at September 07, 2013 11:05 PM (WbOdn) A Carbon 15 does not recoil much. It's not nothing but it's almost nothing. The rifle weighs something like 5-7lbs as opposed to 8-10 lbs. Also recoil sensitivity has very little to do with your size. If the AR had "no recoil" then you'll be fine with a Carbon 15.

247 It's in the nature of high-end smallbore shooters that nobody raves about how good ammunition is, only about how expensive it is, and that's before the panic. I got used to the old Thunderbolt and Lightning at about $1 a box for Scouts to practice with bolt actions at 50 feet, and even in the Good Old Days it seemed like there were a lot of primer duds. Then Remington brought out an even cheaper round, the Golden Bullet. That's the stuff in a box of 525 rounds.

I bought a box for $20 just before the scare. It often goes for $75 or more now. I hear nothing but horror stories about it. Squib fires (bullet sticks in barrel). Bullet coming out of crimp while still in the box. These are things you just didn't hear. I think that except for Lapua and Eley (who have their own "issues"), ammunition makers find themselves under production pressures they're just not used to, and the low end of the line suffers first. This will be with us awhile.

When you're learning both shooting technique and a new gun, I don't think you can afford that third variable. Once you have a feel for how forgiving your gun is, it's a hobby in itself to try all grades for reliability and accuracy.  While you're learning what a good group feels like, that's not fun. It can ruin your shooting.

It bothers me when people buy the best ammunition for their basement boxes, but for learning you need to have some consistency.  CCI Standard Velocity and Eley Match are still around, here and there. They should not let you down. Expect $7-8/50 round box, but when we awaken from this bad dream you'll have plenty of chances to run cheaper stuff. I sure miss Wolf Match Gold.

248 Why and how were the battles of Shevardino and Borodino given and accepted? Why was the battle of Borodino fought?  There was not the least sense in it for either the French or the Russians.  Its immediate result for the Russians was, and was bound to be, that we were brought nearer to the destruction of Moscow - which we feared more than anything in the world; and for the French its immediate result was that they were brought nearer to the destruction of their whole army - which they feared more than anything in the world.  What the result must be was quite obvious, and yet Napoleon offered and Kutuzov accepted that battle. - Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910)

I tend to shoot better when the weather is cooler.  I hate being outside and it's hot as hell because I have to wear gear which seems to trap the damn heat.  I remember one time I was shooting in the rain and did pretty well.  I need to go shooting again too when I have the time.

262 We went and picked up my brother's fiance's daughter (and granddaughter) who is leaving her (daughter's) husband. My brother is getting married (next year) to a woman who already has grown children (it's okay, he's actually older than her anyway). One of those children is married and is leaving her husband (because: drama). Being the chivalrous man (read: sucker) I am, I agreed to go pick her up this weekend. We left on Friday night (after dropping my kids off with my *other* brother). We got back earlier today, but then had drama while picking up our children ("other brother" decided to buy a new car this afternoon- it had taken over 5 hours before I finally gave up on actually getting my kids' stuff). So I only "got home" just a few minutes before deciding to detox at the HQ.

263 CCI Standard Velocity and Eley Match are still around, here and there. They should not let you down. Expect $7-8/50 round box, but when we awaken from this bad dream you'll have plenty of chances to run cheaper stuff. I sure miss Wolf Match Gold.

Man and his boy showed up just before we left with a couple of 100 rd boxes of CCI and a Ruger 10/22 and couldn't put more than 2 or 3 through it without having FTF/FTE issues. The time before last that I had the Marlins out at the local range we were shooting Range Partner's coffee can .22 and the Model 60, which has NEVER been picky about its ammo, kept having FTF/FTE issues (but the 795 worked flawlessly as did Range Partner's 10/22). Last time I had the Marlins out at the local range, shooting white box Winchester, no problems from either of them (actually the last 2 times, we took them to Virginia and they worked flawlessly there as well on green box Remington). Some things just make you scratch your head.

My shoot for real ammo is prime stuff (up to 2 bucks a round for the Arisaka, ouch!) but my range ammo is either reloaded or white box Winchester (although I have bulk Federal for the 9mm). The bulk ammo is reliable enough for practice, but if you need it in the real world...yeah, get quality ammo for sure.

Fellow who made that list in 2009 was too snarky by half, for he was putting some mighty wrong information.

1. It wasn't lard, the bullets were lubed with a fish oil based compound.

2.  Egypt, first time (then general) Napoleon abandoned an army when things got rough.

3.  Only place at Greasy Grass that Gatlings would have been employable was at Reno Hill.  They were artillery.

well good grief, that was disappointing, I can't believe how many people around here didn't like "Now you see me." I appreciated the fact that it was a somewhat novel premise, the magic tricks were cool, the fight scene with the playing cards was fun, and the plot twist wasn't obvious until you were right upon it. Plus my son loved it and it was nice to find a new movie to sit and watch with him.

I guess, for me, I find it a lot easier to suspend my disbelief and just roll with a movie. Had that problem a lot with my ex-husband, he would get all caught up in the science errors or the technology errors and I would be going "yeah but that explosion was so freakin awesome who cares if it violates the laws of physics"

326 Pistols!are Special!, but in general, any semi-auto smallbore rifle that will not function on mill-run major maker regular grade ought to be staking a tent somewhere. That said, semi-autos take a lot of abuse. They are harder to clean than a bolt action, and so tend to get left with powder residue on the "striker-face," around the firing pin, and on the action-traverses where it will bind. And they get oiled, heavily, over that, which just attracts more and creates a fine coating of gritty sludge. That produces FTF and FTE even on a new rifle.

When you think of cleaning your rifle, you always think of the barrel bore. And you should do that. Semis, almost by definition, have a lot more rounds put through them than bolt target rifles because bangbangbang. When they get snarly enough, you just have to have that firing mechanism apart and scrub it with a toothbrush.

Disass with a copy of the manual close at hand, and pitch a fine-mesh tent to catch those pins and springs.

I have never found the 10/22 to be at all temperamental (except for that damned mag release), but for sure give-it-to-Mikey omnivoraciousness, there is nothing like a 1920 Remington Model 24, J.M.Browning, patentee.

the character I liked on Hell on Wheels was the woman, the one who survived the Indian massacre her husband died in and who saved the railroad maps and then worked for the railroad (well, she also slept with the Colm Meaney character, but I didn't hold that against her).

I do like Common though. That was another reason I liked "Now you see me" Common was one of the FBI guys.

An old Nylon 66/77 is pretty unfussy and will keep firing even when incredibly filthy.  Takes about 800-1,000 rounds of lead nose ammo through them before they start to get weird and jam up.

334 I think I'll try back/baby back ribs next time. Baby back ribs are my preference. As you say- less fatty. They also (in my experience) take the brine a little better (so you don't have to brine them quite as long- not that there's a huge difference in 16 & 20 hours, really). Also, since they're smaller, they're easier to eat.

He says I can cook it, but you'd have to drive to Ohio.

I'm not allowed to "Season It" until 2014.  My "Getting Jiggy Wit' It" prompted a de-seasoning sanction / sentence of Twenty Years.

Every State abides by it now.  They've all become one.  I'm all "Free Market".  I season my own foods and keep it on the 'down-low'.

I'd send you Seasoned Shellfish, but the tarriff incurred on the rice, alone, is enough to make you and me think twice.

Putting together a "jambalaya" is too much for me and My Crew to handle.  You're looking for the Higher-Ups.

Nope. I sear salted and peppered beef short ribs in a some oil, remove them, add the beans and not hardly cover with water, add two cups boiling water to which I add one tablespoon each beef and chicken broth. Put the ribs back on top the dutch oven and cook until the beans are almost done, then put the taters on top and season with more salt and pepper.

357 The only good things about cheap ammo are that 1. It is much more likely to cause a failure ... and if you are on the range, you get to practice handling whatever malfunction happened ... ... there is some small value in this: the surprise, the experience, and all in a training environment ... 2. It is a source of brass, hopefully of sufficient quality to be reworked and reloaded as quality ammunition 2 or 3 more times. 3. It is usually better than no ammo at all. Otherwise, cheap ammo is a mistake.

374 Walk me through the brining. I've just rubbed the night before and smoked. Take cold water, I use about 1 gallon for a normal rack of baby back ribs. To the water, add salt (we don't like a lot of salt in Casa de Tenther): I use about 1/3 cup. Add sugar (I use about 2/3 cup). Stir all that together until the salt and sugar are completely dissolved (takes 3 - 5 minutes, usually). If you'd like to add other flavors (I never do), you can add a variety of spices (either whole seed or cracked- but not ground or powdered) at this point. Then, pour that mixture over your ribs, making sure they're pretty well drowned. I let them sit minimum overnight (8 hours) and I prefer starting them in the morning for the next day (16+ hours). When you're ready to cook, take it out of the brine, rinse and dry thoroughly. Cook however you want (if you're doing a rub, you obviously do that at this point). The brine helps add a little flavor, but what it really does is helps break down those connective tissues, making your ribs come out a little more tender.

I don't know if there is an attempt to re-shape the rim, I would assume so, or just depend on luck as the firing pin will 95% not hit in the same spot.

There are four. Napa, NY, Texas, and Singapore.

So, the BH and I went to the Greystone Restaurant at CIA Napa....they had a whole bunch of nice stuff on that evening's menu -- venison with fiddlehead ferns is just one that I recall (though I took notes!), but we were looking through it and just not jelling on anything.

I should digress for a second and note that the restaurant is actually the master class for senior-level chefs about to graduate. When they figure you're competent, they put you to work, under the strict supervision of the master chefs who teach. Our waiter, even,  was studying to be a sommelier.

So, there's so much good stuff, but we're frowning at the menu, and our waiter asks us if he could help. We said, "we thought there might be a tasting menu." He cocked his head, said, "hold on", and nipped off. About 90 seconds later, he was back. "There is -- $125." We slammed the menus closed.....and there began the second most expensive and the most amazing meal we've ever had.

When we left, hours later and stuffed to the gills, we figured that they had taken all the advanced chefs who had missed a class and had 'em do make-up preps to our table. By the time we hit desserts, we were getting so many plates that people at other tables just stared.

I care. But that is not enough. You really really really need to call a hotline and ask for help. Your county or state probably has a number you can call. I did a quick online search and didn't see a reliable national number there for you to call, or I would post one.

The best I can offer is this -- My (still) best friend went through a rough patch 30 years ago as he was staying with us. I got him to call a hotline, and they did help him. I was with him last week, and he's a very successful and happy individual these days.

I have a 70lb compound and 35, 55 and 69lb recurves. I usually do rowing exercises at the gym to keep my upper back muscles in shape. Do you currently shoot? If not, then something in the 20-25 lb range is a good choice. If you want more, plan on working up to what you want. Getting up to a 50lb compound is not too difficult, since recurves have "let-off". A 50lb recurve is much more difficult, since the maximum pull is at maximum draw. My recurves are takedowns. I can un-string them, then unbolt the limbs. Transportation is much easier. Just don't lose any parts. A lot of the less expensive bows are made in Korea. My 35lb one is Korean, and the quality is good.

It's just looking at one's younger self (and here I mean a year or two).  You see what happened.  What came about.  What worked.

There are three MP3s (Summoning Ritual, Toy Funeral, Zoology) that I listened to and I honestly thought, Who did that? Those are pretty good, they have integrity, they have a kind of substance, they are evidence of WORK.

Of course, all three of those MP3s contain nothing but my own crap, so aside from Mr. RVH's lyrics and lead vocal on the Toy Funeral one, I'm left alone to wonder where the signs for that wrong path took shape.

Thanks for saying that you know me.  I love you.

499 493 Thanks for the concern, I appreciate it. And (SPOILER ALERT) I probably won't do anything stupid.

I love you.

The most popular wrong path is despair -- because all other "wrong paths" can become the scenic route to the right place.

500  @ 452 [Null] -- About 15 years ago, I was driving down the highway one day, and the only thing that kept me from yanking the wheel into the path of an oncoming semi was the fact that there was another human being's life at stake. So, I have some idea of what it sounds like you're going through.

It took time and effort to get past that, but it is extremely doable. The first thing is to recognize the flat-out false statements you tell yourself -- like "no one would care" if you died. It's just not true, as demonstrated right here on this thread -- and there are no doubt many more people in your life who would care a great deal.

You'd be amazed at how much anguish you can alleviate by simply reevaluating the thoughts you have about yourself from one moment to the next and determining just how much real truth there is in them.

Listen to the people telling you to call someone.

505 When I was in college, I fell absolutely, totally, intoxicatingly, head-over-heels in love with a girl. She was three days older than I was, people would mistake us for twin brother-and-sister -- and anything she lacked, I had.....and anything I lacked, she could provide. Unfortunately, one of those things that I had and she didn't was loyalty.

I interviewed with a CPA firm on Ventura Boulevard in Encino, thinking that I was taking a step toward building a life together. By the time I actually started working there, I didn't know why life was worthwhile at all. While I performed my duties competently and efficiently, it must have seemed odd to hire an "up-and-comer" and receive a zombie.

I remember times that I would trudge across Ventura Boulevard to get to a food place to continue my life another few hours without hunger....but not check the lights first, in hopes that a passing motorist might end hunger and longing and strife and pain forever.

I've had my fill of the real deal.

As far as the "bosses" are concerned, it's just another path to Power and Control. I mean, why do you think they chose Carbon instead of water vapor? Who can you control with water vapor as an issue?

We think there may have been something wrong with the .22 ammo; it jammed three times. Dave actually has to field strip it to clear a spent casing jammed in it. Unhappy about that.

Saw the most ahmaaaaazing innovation at the range store - a rifle case which FLOATS. To prevent those unfortunate boating accidents.

I think my pistol needs a name. Taking suggestions. It's a kicky little Smith and Wesson SD9VE.

Posted by: Gingy at September 07, 2013 10:16 PM (aH+zP)"

You should probably shoot the pistol at a target 3 yards away while you are learning it.  The closer target helps build confidence and since most of your misses will be on the paper, it helps you learn what you are doing wrong so that you can correct for it.  This is not a waste of time since most shootings happen at a range of zero to five feet.  When you are putting most of your bullets inside the 8 ring at 3 yards, try shooting at 7 yards.

The Concealed Carry class here requires a minimum score at 3, 5 and 7 yards. One of the classes I took started us out at 25 yards. After that class I seriously thought about giving up gun shooting and taking up needlepoint. Thankfully I got better.

Instead, here we are 12 years later, counting the days until some arbitrary date when we can go home.

Posted by: Bomber at September 07, 2013 10:32 PM (+Wfbd)"

In my not so humble opinion, the real mistake with Afghanistan was to leave the place essentially the same as we found it.  We kicked out the Taliban and forced bin Laden to relocate but we did not fundamentally transform the place.

How would such a fundamental transformation be possible?  About the only thing that Afghanistan has which cannot be obtained easier somewhere else is its location at a crossroads between China and the Middle East and between the Indian Subcontinent and the Caspian region.  The way to use that would be to build railroads across the country.   For the political reason of helping the President of Afghanistan be more than the Mayor of Kabul, I would run the railroads through Kabul.  You would want to run a railroad north from Kabul to each of the 'stans on the northern border.  You would want to run a railroad south to the Khyber Pass and also farther west to Baluchistan.  You would want to run a railroad east to the Chinese border and west to the border of Iran.

Building these railroads would connect the Indian/Pakistani railroad system into the Soviet Union railroad system.  It would allow oil from the Caspian to be delivered to Pakistan, India and western China.   It would allow goods from China and India to be transported by rail to Europe.  It would give China, India, Caspian oil producers and Europeans a financial incentive to see that things remain calm and stable in Afghanistan.  Whether that stability is achieved by money or thugs is not that important to the United States.  The important thing is that it happens.

At this point, it is probably too late for that sort of approach.

Yeah, some ranges don't have anything closer but it is a really poor idea to have beginning pistol shooters trying to shoot at that sort of range.  They are not training for the Olympics, they are trying to gain a practical skill and there are very few real life occasions where people shoot pistols at 25 yards.

If they had an option to let people shoot at closer targets, I would compare that kind of jackassery to giving a first time shooter a .44 magnum in order to laugh at them as they react to the recoil.  The goal ought to be to teach the students rather than to provide yuks and ego strokes to the teacher.

537 There is no need for Barky to explain his misuse of NSA’s dragnet against his foes. Judging by how easily he swept into office for a second term this trove of information has paid big dividends! The information field is tilted in our favor! Barky need not explain! Look, when you dragnet the entire population you are bound to find the dirt on anybody who is your foe. It's all done legally behind secret laws! If Barky needs some extra votes in congress he just shoots of a list of "selected" Congressmen and their families to NSA. The dirt soon rolls in. The same is true with Judges and lawyers. These idiots think there is some shred of privacy on the internet and they foolishly use the internet day and night - and so do their families. Too bad for them! Just look how easily Justice Roberts caved when 0bamacare was in jeopardy! The same goes for weak reporters and their families. Heck, when we need squash some leaking donkey that has gone off the reservation we just turn to the NSA and bingo – a family member with a medical problem or a tax deduction that was not kosher - instant dirt data comes to us to intimidate him/her. The system works! I have to say that I even have had to be careful about where and when my butt boys meet. There is a slight possibility that some Pub will get in on the mass wire tapping game and ruin my harem of boys. Sure, Barky and I had to buy off the major internet players with cash the promise to stop intellectual theft of their property. I admit, we had to find conservative internet business to harvest their intellectual property and turn it over to Giggle or MSNBC – but that is how we roll. Nobody can keep us from controlling the power structure! Money for nothing and your boys for free! I cannot comment further. Good day!

This is causing her other friend who is in Korea to be stuck there because all the flights are canceled in Korea thanks to the nuclear bombs being set off in Syria (right near there). This is what she told me. Then she went on to complain for the 100th time about her cats. She is threatening to get rid of them because of the problems they cause. So I offered for the umteenth time to get rid of them for her and she declined. She can't open her windows because they will rip the screen and escape.
