[Hi all I'm back at least for a night or two - thanks for all the thoughts and prayers for my dad. He's doing much much better but isn't out of the woods yet. He has CHF and is hoping to get a Dick Cheney-style LVAD. WiFi here at the hospital is weak so the ONT could end up pic-less. Only upload times will tell. :-)]
Most are pretty good actors who for one reason or another never became known as leading men but still often carried weak movies just on their charisma and believability. Today they're known for 'fun' movies rather than Oscar-bait.
You may or may not know their names but you'll certainly recognize their faces. And yes some of them are known (or suspected) to be full-on Morons.
And bonus points if you recognize this actor without cheating. Hint: He's faced off against Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Patrick McGoohan, and the Hasselhoff. Classic line: "The gaaaate! THE GAAAAAATE! "
The Stranglers, Time and The Great Mellowing
Back in the day the Stranglers were the bad boys of the punk world and bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel perhaps the punkest punk of them all:
Notorious for their black-clad belligerence, Burnel, a karate black belt who once engaged The Clash and The Sex Pistols in a street brawl, would incite riots at gigs by striking audience members with the head of his bass. He once disrobed a French journalist, who had displeased the band and gaffer taped him to the Eiffel Tower - "I only took him up to the first floor, though," Burnel said.
But with the passage of time he's mellowed. A lot:
Ahead of the band's surprise debut at the Proms next week, Burnel, 61, who was once jailed for affray in Nice and spent a year experimenting with heroin, now regrets his anti-establishment past.
Burnel disowned "Garden of Eden", a song he wrote in the 80s about the Queen and her "useless children"."Now I argue the case for constitutional monarchy, which I never thought I'd do," the musician, who owns properties in the South of France and Chiswick, west London, told Radio Times.
He added: "Take the p***s out of me as much as you like. It's no longer the Stranglers against the world. It's the Stranglers with a few friends."
It's no surprise that Rush is number one but a lot of the top 10 weren't hosts I would have guessed.

Advice for the young ladies.
In May, a sixth-grade boy broke school rules by bringing a knife onto campus and using it to threaten six of his classmates. No one was harmed, and the event was subsequently concealed from the teachers by all involved, even those students who were threatened. When the incident came to light, all seven students were called into a separate room and hit over the head once each by the principal.

Yes, I knew he had retired from acting to become a talk-radio host. I had no idea he would be at #5 on this list, though, above Mark Levin!
The pix are misleading. The copy says he's actually tied with Beck and Levin for fourth place.

You know, I kinda assumed he was dead like pretty much all the other main actors from B-5. Lots of early deaths for the cast of that show, especially compared to Star Trek.

Definitely an interesting and underused actor. "The Thing" and "Pitch Black" were also very memorable performances. Glad they included Brion James. Fantastic in "Blade Runner", "5th Element" and "Southern Comfort". Likewise David Patrick Kelley... he pretty much steals the show in everything he's in, including "The Warriors", "Commando" and particularly "Twin Peaks" against very heavy competition.

I had a particularly succulent peach last summer in Utah- I had been riding a large American-made motorcycle at high speed around far sw Utah and came across a roadside produce stand. It was a hot day and I was thirsty so I pulled over and bought the biggest peach available and took a big bite. It was warm and juicy and sweet as candy. The simplest pleasures are often the best.

Posted by: Lincolntf at August 12, 2013 09:58 PM (ZshNr)
Didn't Bennett (played by Vernon Wells) in "Commando" look, speak, and act like a total flamer? Remember that faggy sleeveless, fishnet sweater his character wore in that movie? Plus, he had a Freddie Mercury moustache. I always wondered if it was intentional on the part of the director to make Bennett as gay looking as possible. To top it off, when Schwarzenegger kills Bennett at the end of the film by ripping a pipe out of the wall, throwing it into Bennett's chest, and saying, "Let off some steam, Bennett," the steam flies out of the end of the pipe that impaled Bennett. Sounds like a double-entendre, doesn't it?

There's a new New Orleans-style cajun/creole place I recently tried in Santa Ana CA, called Ritter's. Anyway, one of their appetizers, Ritter's Oysters, is "broiled oysters with a spicy tomato peanut butter bacon sauce, and topped with green onions."
(No, I didn't try it. I had the Bouillabaise instead, complete with clams and mussels still in their shells. It was pretty good.)

CA GOP never supports cnadidates they didn't handpick, or running in districts they long ago agreed to cede to the Dems. In fact, they'll run spoiler candidates into those districts to split the GOP vote.

Well they have been several times before, so why not? Just kidding, gays were the best friends Russian totalitarians ever had.
I see this as one more Cold War replay: anything the Americans were doing, the Rooskies either found they'd done first, or were better at it, or it was contrary to bippul's eeentrest and wrong.
The French for chrissakes were set back by the effeminacy of the Russians before glorious revolution ever took place. Both Czarist and Leninist courts were awash in forbidden love. In the golden age of world socialism, British 'omozegguals used to spy for USSR, then run there for refuge, and were welcome. Everyday life in Russia has had more gayness to it for 150 years (I'm going back to Pyotr Ilyich for a reference point) than even the Howard Zinn version of American life. Or even UK, which is saying a lot.
Russia being anti-gay is something pretty damn new. So it's either orthodox religion being brought to the fore, or part of Putin's pretty accurate campaign mocking Obama as the "mayor of Sodom and Gomorrah." Either way, it's all Putin.

"The Canyons"? I read a piece Paul Schrader wrote about it re working with LiLo. Super-short version: she's great if you love drama and stress on your set, and if you want to make sure the folks at the film completion insurance company are plenty aggravated.
One thing I noticed in the piece though: Schrader definitely ain't the same guy he was back when he wrote "Taxi Driver."

Sure, some of those honorifics must have been bitterly ironic; a few "Kind" or "Fairs" were by comparison with the guy before (or, sadly, after), but with all those and more to choose from, a handful must have been fundamentally decent chaps. Still, "Reasonable and Friendly," I'm just not seeing it.
I once heard a gallant defense of the career of Aethelred, claiming that he stayed plenty busy, and due to his efforts some of his successors were ready indeed.
And there was a noble family up around Dalmatia or Trieste, named "Niltesta."
My history prof said he could only conjecture where that came from...

Since Kinect must be plugged in for the Xbox One to function, what happens if your Kinect breaks? Like if it falls off the top of your TV onto a hardwood floor or something? Will the console cease to function?
WHITTEN: Xbox One is designed to work with Kinect plugged in. It makes gaming better in many ways – from the ability to say “Xbox On” and get right to your personalized homescreen, to the ability to control your TV through voice, Smartglass and more. Kinect allows you to search for your content, instantly move between games and your personalized dash and more with just your voice. Kinect helps you pick up and play by automatically knowing which controller you have in your hands. No more need to interrupt your friends game or navigate through multiple UI screens to sign in and tell the system which controller you are holding. It will even bind the controller to the console if its currently unbound – no searching for special buttons! Of course – these are just a few of the system wide benefits of having Kinect. Games use Kinect in a variety of amazing ways from adding voice to control your squad mates to adding lean and other simple controls beyond the controller to full immersive gameplay. That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor.

Oh, it's no big deal. Apart from the fact that it's one of those chemicals you can suddenly become allergic to after taking it for years and die of anaphylaxis.
But there's the joint deterioration to look forward to, since each attack does some permanent damage. Eventually there's nothing left to hold the bones apart.
But apart from Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxis epidermal necrosis, depression of bone marrow elements, aplastic anemia and interstitial nephritis, that's about all that could go wrong.
Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 13, 2013 01:11 AM (qyfb5)
Yeah, but except for the anaphylactic shock, all the other stuff is caused by untreated gout -- and allopurinol is the treatment. No uric acid, no uric acid crystals, no erosion, no tissue damage....just weird metabolic effects because you're no longer doing something that other people can handle normally.

I take allopurinol to avoid (getting any more) kidney stones. So what a laugh it is to see "stone formation" as one of the side effects. But then, having the fine print read out loud real fast on hundreds of TV drug ads has taught me that if you go clear to the bottom of the list, they all say "sudden but agonizing death." So there is that.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 13, 2013 01:40 AM (qyfb5)
The main point I got from the whole gout thing is that the treatments are all "let's fuck up uric acid synthesis because uric acid regulation is torqued." It's sort of like what I eventually did with my '79 Mustang -- it kept eating thermostats so I just pitched it. Living in SoCal, it's not like I had to worry about extended periods of running the engine in subzero conditions....
Similarly, the "thermostat" on uric acid regulation is chintzy in my bloodline's metabolism. I'm currently avoiding gout attacks by taking allopurinol, which throws a monkey wrench into uric acid creation processes favored by millions of years of evolution....instead of fixing the thermostat. But it's working for the time being.

There is a ton of shit in medicine that is akin to shaking a rattle and reciting verses, when we have tools that should be able to nail that shit down. Unfortunately, everyone is too much concerned about shoving social policy down the throat of an unwilling public to do real science.
As an example, I'm seeing yet another wave of the food pyramid shit that wildly inflated obesity and diabetes statistics comin' down. Latest flavor is "CO2 is caused by meat animals" and "sustainable agriculture". Fact is, sustainable agriculture gives you low-grade morons that are protein-starved, diabetic, and fat. It's just fuckin' Evil, with a capital 'E'. The entire FDA should be run through a hamburger plant and fed to pigs, with a constitutional amendment saying that "notwithstanding the Commerce Clause or ANYTHING ELSE, even mentioning the Federal Government and Healthcare in the same sentence is hereby declared a capital crime."

The thing that BURNS is not the stone knives and bearskins, it's the institutional roadblocks to improvement. There are only 141 medical schools in the US that can graduate a doctor -- this can be compared to the 199 law schools approved by the ABA -- or the 363 schools giving Engineering degrees recognized by www.abet.org. Credentialism is rampant.
And with credentialism comes government protection linked to extremely expensive lobbying.....as well as barriers to entry, restricted supply, cronyism, abuse of licensure, etc. It wouldn't be so much an issue if you could figure your own problem out and get a remedy.....but you must have a graduate of one of the 141 schools give you a piece of paper to get your drug.

at least in my family tree -- people don't die of some of the same things anymore, but those that are healthy are not living any longer than their healthy ancestors.
those that are unhealthy or get some treatable infection are living longer. no polio, no smallpox, etc., etc. but the healthy ones used to live just as long as they do now.

The thing is, we could be 10 years from living forever in the public health system, regardless of http://tinyurl.com/lxyxgjn -- but the public health system is so fubar'd that it'll be 15 years in the blogosphere....or longer.

20 something years into the future. Giant atomic powered cybernetic robots exist.
"This man is hurt. Quick Jimmy, run for help!"
But apparently not cellphones.

Long story short: I was adopted. I sent in a DNA test last month. The results came back this evening.
Kicker: The Family Tree DNA results showed a 2nd/3rd cousin match, with likelihood being 2nd cousin. I did some google-fu, and the geographic location fits. I am related to a minor conservative celebrity.
I'll reveal more after I have contacted the individual if I can...since my existence was/is no doubt a family scandal, the family may not want me to talk about it.

And since that affects their core shipping business, they are being proactive. Pretty damn smart if you ask me.

Funny thing is, Fed Ex already toyed with this a few years ago but it got almost no media coverage then because nobody was giving 3D printing much attention before *gasp* guns became part of the story. It was very natural for Fed Ex because they'd acquired the Kinkos chain of print shops, which had long been place where you could rent time on PCs and Macs running expensive desktop publishing software and connected to very high end printers. Something like a $5,000 HP DesignJet is hard for most smaller businesses to justify, so taking the job Kinkos/Fed Ex made sense.

This was the result of noticing a few things. The way you earn money in the game can be a bit deceptive. The cheaper building and quick jobs produce much less cash and XP but you can do them far more often. Intensive focus can produce a bigger payoff during that period, as opposed tot he more typical play of checking in for a few minutes every few hours.
The Brown House, the first generic building you can buy that isn't attached to a specific character, is very inexpensive and quick to appear. Only $355 and about fifteen seconds, producing $6 and 1 XP every five minutes. It's somewhat of a shotgun shack and lacks a garage. Stuffing them together cheek and jowl with no pesky streets to separate them gets you six per parcel of land.
With a hundred of these, off to one side, it should be possible to reap $7200 and 1200 XP for ever hour of focused harvesting. An audio book or a TV helps during such times. Or if you have a treadmill and tablet you can exercise.
Not having much else to do I started the new Springfield this morning. It's currently up to level 9 with 30 Brown houses in addition to the other stuff called for thus far. I'm expecting that once I get to a certain point I'm going to start some urban renewal, tearing out Brown Houses in favor of more useful items, once I've acquired all of the real estate and a few other things.

You can usually find in a good size town an independent that offers use of Macs and the major DTP packages. But those tend to be specialist outfits. For Fed Ex it stopped being cost effective when most of the software worth mentioning was available in nearly identical form on both platforms.
There are always niche market for those willing to work them. This is why I've always found the idea of Wal-mart coming in and killing every other business to be nonsense. Wal-mart by its nature cannot offer much expertise or specialization. This is where the smart specialist can take advantage. Wal-mart understands this and has a referral program to promote local small businesses on this basis.

Michael Biehn is one of Hollywood's most versatile actors -- he's played a Navy SEAL in The Abyss, a Navy SEAL in The Rock, and a Navy SEAL in Navy Seals.
My favorite non-SEAL role of his is Johnny Ringo.
