Overnight Open Thread (8-14-2013) - Night at the Cinema
— Maetenloch

Since I'm going to be in the air most of today that means that tonight will be a movie night.

And the feature presentation is the 1987 classic Schwarzenegger movie, The Running Man.

Re-watching it I was struck by how it's much less far-fetched it is today than it was 25 years ago. It was supposed to be an over-the-top extrapolation of supposed Reagan-era commercialism and authoritarianism to 2017 but today we're much closer to its reality and Reagan and the Right had little to do with that.

And I can't see an 80's-era Maria Conchita Alonso without thinking about Andrew Breitbart's comment about her on Adam Carolla's podcast.

Breitbart: Can I prove that IÂ’m not a racist toward Hispanics? Did you ever see Moscow on the Hudson? Remember Maria Conchita Alonso in that? The things I did to myself as a teenager prove that IÂ’m not a racist.

35 OK. So my latest imaginary crush I use to while away my time is the superman dude, Henry Cavill. Thank you, Y-not, wherever you are for alerting me as to how yummy he is. Anyhoo, so I was watching an interview Access Hollywood had with him, and it went something like this: AH chick: So, we heard you were bullied as a kid. HC: Yeah, I was fat. They called me Fat Cavill. AH: So how did that affect you? HC: Whatever, I was fat and kids are mean. You get over it. AH: So speaking about your intense workout for the movie, how did what you went through impact your motivation? HC (Looking very puzzled): What I went through? What are you talking about? Oh, you mean being called Fat Cavill? Dude, it's not like I had cancer or anything. I was fat. I should probably have eaten less and exercised more. It had no impact on anything. *Swoon.* You should have seen the incredulous look on his face at that last question. Priceless.

80 It's a habitual pattern on the left to extrapolate the future they're trying to create and then blame everyone else for what they see. I don't even think they know they're doing it, but it goes back a long way. I saw on I think C-Span a long time ago someone talking about a story or show or something they wrote about the future of a right-wing commercialized blah blah, and they started to say it was like a Soviet-style... they paused, like they *almost* realized what they were saying, then blinked and went on "totalitarian regime." I was all like SO CLOSE! SO CLOSE!

Communists don't have anything against themselves having money, it's other people having money they object to.

Yup... and they made such a BIG DEAL of such propaganda, that HBO started the "Comic Relief" for the "multitudes" of homeless that Reagan "created".

Yeah, but they were less blatant about it, and it somehow didn't interfere so badly with creating good stuff. I guess Cameron had some sort of "impotence of the military" theme going in Aliens, maybe a Vietnam thing or something, but who cares, it's a great movie and whatever he had in mind didn't really happen.

Now it seems they can't make something political without it being TOTAL WAR ON REPUBLICANS, so of course it always sucks, artistically and in its narrative. Case in point, Elysium. Not seeing that one really brought this point home to me.

I cannot cancel HBO even though I donÂ’t watch it, itÂ’s part of the package even though Showtime is the only one I watch. I am not into witches and stuff like that on the HBO show that is a hit. I tried to watch it once.

He says capitalism is the key to helping the poor, not merely handouts. “Aid is just a stopgap,” he said. “Commerce [and] entrepreneurial capitalism take more people out of poverty than aid. We need Africa to become an economic powerhouse.”

He was hosted one weekend by a minor Party official in some off-beat republic (in the Crimea?), who was the deputy assistant literary advisor or something like that. The guy had an incredibly "plush" dascha by the Black Sea. Heinlein noted that this guy was not "rich", but had plenty of benefits for being some minor "Party" official. And that's how they roll in the Class War...... And Sean Penn is a talentless obnoxious dick, and whatever else you want to call him.

116 Problem with hollywood is, ironically, lack of diversity. The huge majority of them are libs so there's no one there to temper their ideological zeal, not even losing money phases them anymore, think of all the Iraq movies they vomited out in Bush's last few years, all were huge flops, they kept putting them out though.

Plus, they're just not very bright, Robert Redford is as lefty as they come and he's said his movies all have a political message, but he said he tried to put the entertainment above the message. Hollywood libs these days doesn't get that, they just bludgeon you with their bullshit, course, even Redford has given up on subtlety these days.

There *are* good writers and idea people in Hollywood, but even they don't seem to know it and periodically put out the same trash as everyone else. The "nobody I know voted for Reagan" factor is not to be underestimated, however, which mixes well with liberals' tendency to assume their politics are common sense while everyone else's politics are just politics.

Leo----You will grab attention in any way you possibly can. Self-immolation is not out of the question. You like to kiss mirrors a lot. Genghis Khan was a Leo, and so is Barney the Dinosaur. People still love Lucy, but less because she was a Leo. Leos will interrupt conversation to talk, and they will place themselves bodily in the way of someone who is trying to leave before the Leo is finished saying what he or she needs to say. All Leos want parades on their birthdays. Leos never marry because no one is good enough for them. If they do marry, they keep their spouses locked under the bathroom sink. They need physical affection at all times; unfortunately, they can't find any because everyone thinks they are irritating punks. This is why so many of the people arrested for necrophilia are Leos. A Leo uses himself as an example of the Overman in order to describe philosophical concepts. Some Leos decide to be homosexual even if they aren't, because they think this gives them shock value. It actually means that neither gender will want to hook up with them. In actuality, anything besides a romantic evening with themselves is considered a step down for the Leo. Leos open doors by screaming at them. They expect their Clappers to applaud when they enter a room. Leos are said to resemble lions. This means that they are loud, have cleft upper lips and slimy noses, and s**t under trees as they walk. They snack on monkeys while watching "Entertainment Tonight". Humility frightens Leos. That is why Jesus was a Capricorn, Buddha was an Aries, and so forth. However, "radical cult leader" is not out of the question. Leos like to start fights with Aries. They will stomp and bloody each other regardless of whether or not they are in public. In fact, the Leos usually prefer it. You will see these fights taking place at bars, sporting events, fashion shows, or Taco Bell. If you are a clever Capricorn, you will sell tickets. Don't worry about hanging posters--Leo will take care of that in advance. Aquarians hang posters of rock stars on their walls. Scorpios hang posters of famous disasters on their walls. Capricorns hang posters of great mathematicians on their walls. Pisceans hang posters of unicorns on their walls. Leos hang posters of themselves on their walls.

To which I say "Duh". Why the F is this so hard for some people. The first bicycle I had to pay for (not a hand me down) was my favorite which I actually cared for and did maintenance on and I learned that at 12.

150 OK, here's my theory on why the New York Times is printing a story on what a corrupt and possibly illegal operation the Clinton foundation is.  First off, the idea that the Times just uncovered this information and they are bravely printing all the news that's fit to print doesn't pass the laugh test.  They spike and fabricate stories all the time to facilitate the interests of Democrats.  I am certain that they are running this story because Barack Obama wants them to.

With the news that Islamic terrorists got 400 man portable SAMs at Benghazi, the possibility of some spectacular terrorist operations seems a lot more likely.  How about if on the same day Islamists shoot at 100 different airliners at 100 different airports as they take off or land.  Say they hit 20 of the airliners blowing up an engine and maybe a dozen jumbo jets crash.  The real kicker in that scenario is that they will have 300 missiles left to do it again.

This is a real problem.  Who is Obama going to blame?  My guess is that Obama wants to make Hillary the designated fall guy.  The only problem is that if Hillary is the seemingly inevitable Democrat candidate in 2016, the legacy media will automatically circle the wagons to defend her and some of the Benghazi blame might stick to the thin skinned Lightbringer.  Well, we can't have that so under the bus goes Hillary.

Anyway, that is my current theory and it is subject to change if there is any new data.

155 Hello again, sports fans.  Welcome to the ONT.  We're not quite at capacity, but a loud and enthusiastic crowd seems to have formed for tonight's event.

The gin and vodka has been flowing, as we pass the first hundred comments.  No dominant topic established, lest Hollywood bullshittery take its rightful place as the default.

The regular prayers have gone out to the faithful and we're in for another night of drunken frivolity.  The umpire has called 'pants off", and we're underway.

...I'm going to be a broadcaster someday.  I can feel it.

Going outside anytime from mid-spring to mid-summer for anu period of time up here in New England -- particularly in forested areas -- is an invitation to being swarmed with little bugs that get stuck under your eyelids and in your mouth and hair and ears.... Mosquitoes bite and carry disease and are awful. but at least you can hear them coming.

I would sometimes get bored, so I would time how long it would take me to do a full row or two for an afghan for a double or queen sized bed. When I was a teenager I made one that was all red with a few rows of green in between. The colors together made everyone's eyes jump. I have pictures of it from an old Kodak camera, and it looks like there is a row or flash of yellow in it. I don't know what happened to it, if my mother gave it away, or if I did.

Once we lost his WR speed, the offense was unimaginative and the defense just sucked for ONE DAY that season.  You can say they were "exposed", byt the NFL draftees would prove otherwise.

Yup, I remember him well. Got drafted late by Baltimore, I think? The downfall of that Gaytor game was the injury to ... damnit! The WR that ran back the opening kick for a TD and got hurt in his stupid celebration. ...Ted Ginn.

Once we lost his WR speed, the offense was unimaginative and the defense just sucked for ONE DAY that season. You can say they were "exposed", byt the NFL draftees would prove otherwise.

You can ask, but never become covetous.  I find strength in others, especially when I'm down.  Closing the business this year was rough, but I've got close friends who care.

My asinine decisions over my youth were what they were.  My stupid decisions over the past five years were ego-judgement.  I took the chance and lost.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I wish for things, but I never become greedy.  I'll live in a hut and welcome The Burning Times; should they come...  LOL.

Holy cow, where to start on this thread? This is what happens when you actually have to do something at work when you should be playing on the internet.

Bugs:  South GA, skeeters weren't too bad. Loads of gnats, made everyone constantly wave their hands around their faces to keep em off your nose/lips/eyes.  Noseeums - tiny little bastards, all mouth and small enough to get through screens.

Maria Whazhername - Yeah, just like Breitbart said. Surprised I didn't go blind.

Capitalism/Charity - Met Pierre Garcon's sister while on a missions trip to North Haiti. She insisted "Stop giving them everything, it just makes them lazy." Since she actually grew up in Haiti, I think she was onto something there.

OK, emoting on the internet.  A first.

I, a sibling and my dog -- my dog!, were almost killed while crossing the street.

Marked crosswalk, stop sign, elderly driver wearing wraparound cataract glasses almost ran all three of us down because she "couldn't see us in the sun".  And when I say almost, I got her to stop by screaming and waving my hands, but she knocked the tote bag with the work computer out my hand, busting that on the street.  I don't think I got hit, I'll check for bruises tomorrow after the adrenaline wears off, but inches -- inches.

Woman driver far less concerned and apologetic that you'd expect, witness "didn't want to get involved", cop that eventually showed up didn't even file a report because there was no blood to simply things and he was obviously going off shift.

Angered at the event. My last moment on Earth would have been seeing my family die right in front of me. But more so at the indifference and moral blindness of humanity.

I at least filed a report with the DMV Safety office requesting she be reexamined.  Maybe she'll get her license pulled before she kills someone.

I bet y'all didn't know this:

Under the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918, Wilson's administration shut down newspapers and magazines at an astounding pace. Indeed, any criticism of the government, even in your own home, could earn you a prison sentence. One man was brought to trial for explaining in his own home why he didn't want to buy Liberty Bonds.

From a CSM article I'm perusing; author is one Jonah Goldberg. Does this remind you of a certain rodeo clown incident of recent vintage?

PS Woodrow Wilson was a shitbag.

I think I can understand how the loss of independence / mobility would feel to an elderly person, but incidents like this show how important more rigorous testing should be.

453 447 I saw Nugent about 10 years ago during his Fuck You tour. Yep, that was the name of the tour. He lived up to it too, trying his damnedest to offend everyone attending. Still, I suffered through, cuz I wanted to hear him play Stranglehold.

I've seen Nugent once live -- in about 1981, in San Francisco, at the Cow Palace. Opening band was the Scorpions -- that nobody had heard of and everyone was just wishing wouldn't show......but ended up getting ovation after ovation after ovation and calls back to the stage. After that show, they had to know they could headline a tour.

Thanks folks.  I do appreciate the concern.

Just checked myself over, which is less entertaining than it usually is.  I got clipped.  I've got a red bruise on my shin about the size of a silver dollar with deep squared off dents for about a hand's breath around it.  From either her bumper or the computer getting driven into me.  Also starting to ache. Gonna hurt a heck of a lot more tomorrow.

What really gets me is the witness. Sin, in a religious or moral sense, exists.  And I just saw someone willfully, after considered thought, violate one of the Top 10. A freaking commandment. Not bearing false witness includes not bearing witness when you should.

Just augh!

That would be the answer for thousands of workers in the tax collection field who have integrity, ethics, and do honest work for the benefit of our country and its citizens.....and who are overseen by corrupt Alinskyite thugs like Lerner, Miller, Werfel, and Wilkins.

As an example of the "right kind of tax auditor" -- I was the Controller of a company that made robots for resale -- we bought all are parts without sales tax and sold to customers with-or-without tax depending on if the robots would be resold. However, we took a certain number of our robots and fed 'em off the production floor to R and D for destructive cycle-testing.....and carefully included this on our sales tax returns as an internal use.

Such is the marvel of the California Sales and Use Tax Code that actually using something to death isn't subject to "Use Tax". The auditor brought that up as an adjustment item and I was totes, "you're kidding, right?!?" If we had pulled 'em out of production to use for wafer fab, that would have been taxable....but to just flail around in an empty room until the bearings failed....nope. Who knew?

But to some, it's more important to "get it right" than to assure "the government always wins" -- and there are some fine men and women working in the tax field who solidly contribute.

I prefer the Marine Corps version:

U.S. Marine Corps Rules:

    1. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
    2. Decide to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.
    3. Have a plan.
    4. Have a back-up plan, because the first one probably won't work.
    5. Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
    6. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun whose caliber does not start with a "4."
    7. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.
    8. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral & diagonal preferred.)
    9. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.
    10. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.
    11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
    12. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
    13. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating your intention to shoot.

You're confusing this with the Federal R+D tax credit, which is a totally different animal. On the level of plain English -- it ain't something being Researched or Developed, because it only involved units in volume production.

It wouldn't be a bad thing to ratchet off another 50 pounds, but the things that worked initially (low-carb leftovers on diet [monotonous food decreases appetite]; hiking) aren't as effective now, as my fitness improves. We have this local park with a loop trail that has a 600' elevation differential (equivalent to doing the stairs in a 60-story building), and we blow through it with barely a pause. Am I going to have to start carrying the BH piggyback on this trail? What is she going to do for exercise, then?

483 When you pull the destruct test units, make some trivial fastener substitutions - like replacing non-critical bolts irrelevant to the test with titanium ones.

Then for R&D tax purposes you can claim those units are version "X"+1 "prototypes" that you're doing moving mass "reduction" work on.

Nobody would question a moving mass reduction program for robots.

That's how I blew off the first 70lb 16 years ago when I was over 300.

Try turning your A/C up to 82 degrees too.  The higher ambient have your body giving you more clues its time to lay off eating than lower setting will.

I've been without A/C for 4 years now and really don't miss it, even when the inside temp goes up into the 88 range.  A calorie restricted diet, makes the higher ambients a LOT easier to deal with comfortably.

Again, we're talking sales tax on quality control robots (which happen to have been handled by the R+D group), vs R+D investment tax credit, which has very specific rules of its own.

Now, there are some profound and complicated accounting issues involved with the granularity needed to deal with various conflicting sets of rules (I once joked that a church [that I was auditing] needed only two lines on their statement of activities: "beneficence from the almighty" and "good works").....but that's not the point. Neither is the fact that quality control was handled by the R+D group. What I discussed was an extremely narrow and counterintuitive application of the Use Tax in California.

The reason I am now driving a pick up truck is that a couple of years ago I was sitting at a red light when an old man ran into me at 40 miles an hour and pushed me all the way through the intersection.  I will say that a Ford Focus is a very safe vehicle and I did not sustain any damages although my (paid for) car was totaled.  When the old ass hole got out of his car he said in his own defense, "I was doing the speed limit."  There was a red light, asshole.  The speed limit was zero.  Anyway, I now have a large enough vehicle that if somebody else pulls the same maneuver, they will probably die.  This is because for a while, every time I was at a red light I would stare at the rear view mirror all tensed up until approaching traffic stopped.

It's like history written with lightning and the worst part is that it is all so true.

Hey.  Do you remember when John McCain described his foreign policy goals as "Wilsonian"?

Fuck McStain. More worrying to me is that R. Heinlein named his central character, Lazarus Long, as Woodrow Wilson Smith in his earlier works (he first appeared in Methuselah's Children). I understand that Wilson was a larger than life person in the 40s still, but Heinlein held a more than healthy respect for the d-bag.

Since Heinlein holds an important position in my political philosophy, this has bothered me for quite some time.

520 The inventor of the drive was Andrew Jackson Libby, IIRC ... I think Heinlein just used famous names ... Johan (sp) Sebastian Bach Smith, e.g. ...

521 "That would be the answer for thousands of workers in the tax collection field who have integrity, ethics, and do honest work for the benefit of our country and its citizens.....and who are overseen by corrupt Alinskyite thugs like Lerner, Miller, Werfel, and Wilkins.

They must be wondering how reliable the "official answers" in the FAQs they've been given actually are....but, unfortunately, few of them are in a position to really know.

The only way that most of the population will ever believe that anybody working for the IRS has any integrity, ethics or honesty is for a ruthless purge that mercilessly fires everybody who participated in using the power of government to harass the political opposition, even if they were only following orders.  That is never going to happen with the current administration in power and will probably never happen while any Democrat is President.

You just gotta love the HQ. No matter how obscure the point, you will get some enlightenment. Ty Adriane.

524 Vic is going to have a busy news morning, just based on the articles I see at Lucianne.com. Get crackin', Vic; there's lots of mocking to be done today.

525 Maria Conchita Alonso is not only a babe, she also has enough juice to have publicly called Sean Penn a fucking communist (well, a "communist" anyway) and compared TFG to Hugo Chavez. Between her, Janine Turner and my new favorite rodeo clown, I think there's hope for show business.

526 Now about those longbows... If Lazarus Long ever fired a longbow, I'm sure he washed his hands afterward and kept it to himself ... mostly ...
