The 2016 Crystal Ball

Per Larry Sabato. I think he's a bit behind on Christie and Cruz's momentum and I would have switched their places. Of course with 1180 days to go before the 2016 election this mostly means nothing.

Kathleen Parker: Only Women Bring Peace So Vote Hillary! to Save the World

The other WaPo 'conservative' columnist:

Here's a thought: She [Hillary Clinton] can save the world.

Let's begin with a working (and provable) premise: Women, if allowed to be fully equal to men, will bring peace to the planet. This is not so far-fetched a notion. One, men have been at it for thousands of years, resulting in millions and millions of corpses. Two, countries where women are most oppressed and abused are also the least stable.

Three, as women become more empowered, especially financially, countries become more stable.

What does this have to do with Hillary? Quite a bit.

But per Parker a President Palin would be bad, bad, bad!

And that's a bad thing. There's a name for this problem: Detroit

RIP Admiral Sir 'Sandy' Woodward

He commanded the British carrier battle group Task Force 317.8 during the Falklands war and died last week at the age of 81.

On the passage south Woodward visited as many ships as he could, though his message to the various ships' companies of the destroyers and frigates was uncompromising: "You've taken the Queen's shilling. Now you're going to have to bloody earn it. And your best way of getting back alive is to do your absolute utmost. So go and do it."

Was Little House on the Prairie Meant to be an Anti-New Deal Fable?

Wilder and Lane responded with their now-famous sequels. From the start, there was tension between their approaches. Wilder argued for strict accuracy, while Lane, the seasoned commercial writer, injected made-up dialogue, took out stories about criminals and murder, and-most significantly-recast the stoic, sometimes confused pioneers as optimistic, capable people who achieved success without any government help.

Laura Ingalls Wilder never got used to Lane's heavy rewrites, but the evidence suggests that on the main approach, playing up toughness in adversity, she agreed with her daughter. Both women believed fervently that the nation in the depths of the Depression had become too soft. In 1937, Wilder wrote Lane that people's complaints about having no jobs made her sick. ("People drive me wild," she wrote. "They as a whole are getting just what they deserve.")

Have you got any idea how long it takes to iron the seams in a 115"x100" quilt top comprised of 2.5"x17.5" (finished size) pieces? A fuck of a lot. I no longer look like I'm in my early 30s due to that time suck. Ironing in the humidity of the Maryland summer! I've begun to piece the back. It'll be done tomorrow.

87 "Here's a thought: She [Hillary Clinton] can save the world. Let's begin with a working (and provable) premise: Women, if allowed to be fully equal to men, will bring peace to the planet" The liberal who wrote this must not watch "Snapped" on Oxygen Network. It's an entire series based on women killin' their men. And they aren't all doing it because they're exploited by men. A sizable number of them do the exploiting. You know, marrying a guy with money, then whacking him. Marrying a guy, making sure he has a nice insurance policy, then whacking him. Marrying a guy for security, having an affair with someone hotter, then whacking the husband. Then, of course, there's the old stand-by, whacking your husband because you're all hysterical and irrational from having your period. Uh,oh, am I going to be accused of committing a hate crime by those hags at NOW?

95 40 I don't see AC regulations going anywhere except more energy use and higher costs. They can mandate thermostats that won't go below 70, but it's just two freaking wires. They can mandate even worse refrigerants but there is a multitude of unregulated low SER substitutes. Posted by: SpongeBob ReaverSaget at August 15, 2013 10:37 PM (kxSZr) There are ways around every government regulation, but for the masses, the controls will be effective because they won't know the work arounds. Don't forget that phosphates were banned in consumer products, but are available in commercial cleaning products To get them, you have to go out of your way to find them, and let's be honest, it's much easier to pick up the Cascade at Krogers than to get it from a commercial supplier.

98 Plus it had the same problem that Longmire has, a Massachusetts attitude towards guns, in two Constitutional Carry states. And Shwartzenpecker's acting has actually gotten worse than his first few films.

Although I have to admit, the chase scene in the field was fresh and different. Unheard of in Hollywood these days.

111 Suggestion for morons who live in the northern climes:

Joe Bastardi has been posting on Twitter that we will probably have a bad winter,  as a precursor to a new Little Ice Age.

So: Winterize your car over the next couple of months,  lay in some firewood, buy a gas cannister for your grill,  and buy a little extra food each week which can be used if you can't get out of the house.

None of these things will bankrupt you and you will be SO glad if you are hit by a blizzard like in 1978!

Look, why don't you take your sexual dysfunction back into the private sphere instead of sharing it with the rest of us. Or FFS, buy a damn vibrator. Two, countries where women are most oppressed and abused are also the least stable. ...Yes? And? Hey, Katy P! You know what else is common in a lot of those countries? Goat abuse. Coincidence? Maybe we should make a goat President; demonstrate our country's dedication to goat equality. And it would have the added benefit of putting a relatively smart creature in the Oval Office; unlike the typical female politician, who has even less brain matter than you, you laughably retarded hag. Three, as women become more empowered, especially financially, countries become more stable. Again I feel it necessary to point out the goat issue. Posted by: booger at August 15, 2013 10:45 PM (E1tcO) I've related this story on ONT before..... When I was stationed in Egypt, many years ago, we had spring-loaded electrical switches set up for each barracks room AC unit. In the summer (when the temps were 125-130 or so), they'd save electricity by cycling the power in the daytime when everyone was working, and that'd kill the AC in your room until you returned.....to a damned oven. For those of us on shifts, it was hell. You couldn't sleep more than a couple of hours because of the AC tripping. So we'd duct-tape a rock to the spring-loaded pushbutton to keep the AC running. Worked great until we started getting caught. So we'd just do it when we were sleeping, and pull the tape when we left. Where there's a will there's a way.

140 "Kwikset Lock Vulnerability Found? Hide your kids, hide your wife and go with Schlage man-traps."

Have your locksmith test the tumbler set on a lock of any make to be sure it is not vulnerable to an artfully wielded "bump key". An amazing number of residential locks are.

I think we have a technological inflection point shortly to arrive regarding the vulnerability of common mechanical locks.

There will still be locks in 20 years' time, but they will operate quite differently than today's locks do.

That said, any residential burglar worth his salt will just go round and look for unlocked doors or open windows or spare keys under the flowerpots before trying any trickery with the locks. Works in a disturbingly high percentage of cases.

There's also a nasty entry trick that I hadn't counted on, involving garage doors. You DO have a secure solid core door with a deadbolt in between the garage and the rest of the residence, that's always locked, do you not? You don't? Oh. Oh dear.

Our garage has a side door into it, so it can't be considered "safe."

He had some insights about 30 years ago, but no more. All he does is rehash conventional wisdom and sell it as cutting edge analysis. Very few people in Virginia take him seriously anymore, and in 2006, he proved himself to be a Democrat hack. See Allen, George rumors of 2006.

180 There's also a nasty entry trick that I hadn't counted on, involving garage doors.

A lot of places in FL with attached roofed over porches just have ordinary sheetrock as the porch ceiling.

A few whacks with a 5lb mini-sledge or a minute or two with a sheetrock stab saw and you're into the attic, thus bypassing all the usual entry point alarms.

A lot of newer wood frame places up north only have plywood sheeting at the corners for structural rigidity with the bulk of the exterior wall being siding hung straight over tyvek wrapped studs.  Those places you can just rip some siding off, slit the tyvek, and punch your way through the sheetrock into an interior room

Longmire? You're still watching that Hollyweird television shit.

Knock it the fuck off. It's bad for you. It really is.

And, it puts money into the pockets of truly unpleasant people when you do so.

If you want to know about actual life in rural WY, cancel your television nonsense and go there and see for yourself.

Don't rely on a southern California television "reimagining" of it by people who have never been anywhere near the place, who acidly refer to the locals who actually live in places like WY as "flyovers", and who are shooting speedballs and molesting kids when they're not at their television jobs.

I am in a craka neighborhood with little crime, so there's that.We have some kind of hole things on porch roof to allow hurricane winds to whistle through. We do lock our laundry room door to garage door, which is always closed due to snake fear over robber fear. Many, many people do not lock the door leading to garage. Women will bring peace to the world.......yet Margaret Thatcher was vilified as the warmongering devil incarnate, almost as bad as the insane cowboy Reagan.

Never mind the long list of female leaders who were either willing to fight to defend their country (Elizabeth I, Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi) or willing to slaughter others in order to gain political power or oppress others (Indira Gandhi again, Jiang Qing (Gang of Four), Emperess Dowager Cixi, Benazir Bhutto (thanks for effectively creating the Taliban), Caterina of Forli, etc.

251 "1 Great Pyrenees? check. 1 German Shepard? check. 1 silly assed Shi-tzu? I guess check."

I actually am a fan of the dog mix concept. I wasn't before.

Then someone showed me their dog security. Hunter-killer model.

They have three hyperactive little dogs who are out on the perimeter all the time. The sort of dogs who make a lot of yappy noise at anyone who walks past, but whose presence would not deter anyone from actually coming over the fence.

Behind the three noisy little dogs, there are the two big quiet dogs who are ready to take care of business.

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't have seen it, but it's a great combination.

The small dogs don't make enough noise individually to piss of the neighbors, but any genuine threat will get two or more of them in the mix, and that's enough to get one of the big dogs awake and interested. And then if one of the big dogs sounds off, the other one will show up promptly.

It would be hard to get on that property without permission.

I have an English shephers,  best described as a black farm collie.  She is VERY trritorial and won't allow anyone in the yard or house.

My daughter moved in with 2 dogs,  a rattrrier/Bostontrrier mis,  and a chihuahua/Pomeranian mix.

When they see something or hea something,  the little dogs go ballistic and bark up a storm.  The big dog chimes in.  If I open the door,  they run out as a pack,  and I think most people would avoid entering the yard or house.

283 Well, purp, I am going to hope local burglers don't read here. I am in a concrete block/stucco bunker except for the garage and porch, apparently. Oh, and French doors...but who's counting ways to murder me in my beauty rest? Like I said, if someone drops through my ceiling one night I will simply go to my glory. I say that about Mr. Black Snake as well, who resides in front hedge, waiting for me to check the mail.

We had a raccoon in attic a few years ago who sounded like a man walking on the roof and scared me to death. A trapper cracka came out and scouted around and decided they were getting in through something in roof (can't remember name, but husband and sons put plywood in porch thing and they went elsewhere). He said they can get up to 40 lbs and drop through ceiling, which would also cause me to expire pretty quickly.

Anyway, husband kept card for trapper guy, who had seen it all and is a character. He discussed roof rats and stuff like that I'd rather not know about until I move West. Anyway, no one believes me but I think a vole or something like a black toupee scooted out from couch one day when I was unloading groceries from deadly garage. I called husband and was hysterical on phone. He told me to put towel under door to that wing of house where toupee ran to on his little legs (he had no tail). Told me to call trapper man, who came while I was at work. Trapper man asked me if I had "droppings on floor near baseboards." I told him I would not know what a dropping looked like but I did not see a dropping I saw a black toupee thing with no tail. He went through house and decided that the little lady had a floater in her eye or something as there were no droppings or sign of critters. He told husband to tell me whatever it was...wink, wink...was gone. I was sober and it happened. And it is still somewhere in here with the damn lizards that come in now and then to torment me.

So, being the tough Florida woman that I am, I might stand a better chance fighting a falling robber/looter than the creatures from the dark lagoon of this state.

On that note, I will go off to my restless sleep and know who to blame.

Thodse 19th century robber-bron fantasies were actualy very generoous to those in true need, and readily supported education. Back then, people didn't have a problem with helping those who could not actually support themselves, such as the blind. Everyone, both public and private, both rich and poor, supported schools for the blind, def, &c. They were not subsidized for life usually, but brought up to be as self-sufficient as they could be. Sadly, since, then, just being lazy is considered a disability worth subsidizing.

First of all, women don't like other women, they don't mentor other women, and they are far more petty and vindictive than men could ever imagine. If a woman were president, she'd probably get mad if another female world leader had better legs or was "prettier" than her and then all hell would break loose. There are other expenses such as travel and even pocket money that Mary would have needed and even a little bit of cash money when you grow your own food and count treats in pennies and the harvest means getting paid once a year... both things... that the school for the blind was provided by the state *and* that Mary couldn't go unless Laura worked for the money to send her could be true.

366  @ 337 [Synova] -- Actually, I was just reading through some of the episodes on a website when I discovered this:

"138.) He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not: Part Two
         May 12, 1980
         Written by Michael Landon
         Directed by Michael Landon

Laura helps Adam and Mary set up a new blind school in Sleepy Eye, to try and get her mind off Almonzo. That doesn't work because Almonzo is in Sleepy Eye. When Almonzo gets very ill from working too hard, Laura rushes to help him.

She finds out that he had been secretly helping to pay for the rent for the blind school. Almonzo pulls through, thanks to Laura being at his side. Charles decides to allow Almonzo to marry Laura one year earlier, rather than making him wait two years."

So, obviously, Almonzo's ass-busting hard work is what kept the school for the blind open, and not the federal teat.

I am making a recommendation thread on Sunday for beginners, including complete telescopes for under $200.

For binos, the Celestron SkyMaster 15x70s are fantastic, but they get heavy, and are best with a camera tripod. Still, they offer a great view and sell on Amazon for under $70. For an all-around and easy to tote, Bushnell makes a great pair of 8x42s for $76:

Older homes...homes built in the 60's and 70's, or older...may have their garish cosmetic features.

But they are better-built than most of the ones that are being thrown up today.

And with bigger rooms...higher ceilings.

And most of the older houses have a Window over the Kitchen Sink!

That is a biggie for me.

I hate these newer homes that have the kitchen in the center of the house...with no window over the kitchen sink.

432 I found out that here in MA they will give you 75% off up to $2,000 per unit for insulation. I called and man came out on 1/30/2013. I let him put in those stupid bulbs that are supposed to last forever. Two didnÂ’t make it for six months. I was supposed to fix leak in roof, it is fixed. I had contractor out and now I am supposed to fix ceiling & wall in room I do not use. My home is old and I am the only one with a job. I need insulation in back hall. Dryer is there and in winter I canÂ’t go there unless I have heavy coat on. I think IÂ’m just going to pay to insulate that hall and tell Mass. Save to eft off. BTW, electric bill did not go down because of light bulbs.

I figured I had done around 200 kitchens in my time, and that means 200 ugly kitchens done in the 60's and 70's I had to rip out. Holy shit...just unreal the stuff people thought looked good. Our house, which was built in 1955, had an entire wall (to the living room/dining area) that was paneling over studs, later floated with drywall mud, and covered with horrible wallpaper that had actual grass-like plants woven in an open weave stuck on it. Needless to say, we tore all that crap out, stuffed insulation between the studs, and properly applied drywall. If you pressed between the studs, the wall would actually flex.

The vet did change us to Dasequin which is similar to Cosequin, but was only available via prescription.

467 My house is over 200 years old, and though I insulate it well there are too many places for cold to creep in. It is always full of surprises and costs a fortune to heat in the winter and you better have a sweater. Soon I'll be cutting wood for the season. August has been cool enough this year it makes me worried for the winter.

468 What was the worst kitchen and/or bath you ever saw?

Posted by: Vendette at August 16, 2013 12:41 AM (8JbVT)

Shit, there were many. I did baths too, so some of those really took the cake. I know the bath in my house was right up there. It had mint green and yellow tiles, mint green toilet, tub, and sink that was installed on some home made vanity made out of dark paneling with a mosaic tiled top with sharp corners. Yeah I nuked that room really quick.

Kitchens varied, a lot of times they were really old and had been painted over with those crappy dark antiquing kits people would buy, and sometimes if you were lucky you would see it matched with dark paneling and totally disgusting indoor outdoor type carpet tiles in a lovely shade of red with harvest gold aplliances. Those were among the worst.  I found that the really old "intact" kitchens done in the 40's or 50's actually could look better than a lot of the stuff done in the 70's, because those had normal colors. There was a fetish with metal cabinets in the 50's and 60's it seems, and some of those were a riot because most of them were painted by the time I got to them. One had metal cabs that were painted gloss black with a bright red counter top and a black and white floor. In reality a lot were just equally gross, all the 70's colors were shit.

An Army soldier who died in the Fort Hood attack was shot 12 times as he charged Maj. Nidal Hasan, it was revealed Thursday during Hasan's court-martial.

Spc. Frederick Greene, 29, of Mountain City, Tenn., was identified as the solider whose gunshot wounds were 'consistent' with him trying to charge Hasan, Dr. Phillip Berran, a pathologist, said. He reviewed photos of Greene's body for the judge before jurors were led into the courtroom.

And thank you forever Mr. Greene for your service and your bravery. What a shame that your family can't even get a Purple Heart to remember you by; because the dickless soulless turds in DC decreed this incident 'workplace violence'.

Oh yeah, the vanity was made from 1X2 pine (furring strips) and dark paneling. It had surpassed many a bathroom I enjoyed putting a hammer to. The kitchen was equally retarded. The cabs were home made, were super dark brown, had a fake butcher block formica top, brown linoleum floor, and the dreaded wallpaper with the fruits, veggies, clocks and pots with various spice names mixed in. It was very clean, but among the uglier shit I have seen. You would never recognize the house there days, but man it was nasty.

The family room was medium dark paneling with BLACK...BLACK painted moldings, and a dark brown rug. I curse the former owner to this day.

Lay down a base coat of a light color, then brush on a dark stain and try to rub most of it off before it dried.  Impossible to match sections for color or pattern. Stain inevitably got on to the wrong areas or you dropped a stain soaked rag and ruined the floor.

501 U. S. District Judge for the District of Columbia Royce Lamberth ordered the EPA to submit to discovery in a case brought against it by the conservative group Landmark Legal Foundation and said the foundation can seek information to determine whether top EPA officials used personal email accounts to conduct official business.

“The possibility that unsearched personal email accounts may have been used for official business raises the possibility that leaders in the EPA may have purposefully attempted to skirt disclosure under the FOIA,” Lambert wrote. “The possibility that the agency purposefully excluded the top leaders of the EPA from the search, at least initially, suggests an unreasonable and bad faith reading of Landmark’s FOIA request and subsequent agreement to narrow its scope.”

Lambert also said the EPA’s statements concerning its search for records were incomplete and “contain numerous inconsistencies and reversals which undermine confidence in their truthfulness.”

Just go read 5 USC § 552.
There are no penalties

This is as good as it gets:

(6) The Attorney General of the United States shall submit an annual report on or before April 1 of each calendar year which shall include for the prior calendar year a listing of the number of cases arising under this section, the exemption involved in each case, the disposition of such case, and the cost, fees, and penalties assessed under subparagraphs (E), (F), and (G) of subsection (a)(4). Such report shall also include a description of the efforts undertaken by the Department of Justice to encourage agency compliance with this section.

USAG Eric Holder will submit a report.

It's the same with cats, who are far more aloof than dogs. Saw a family of strays at the backyard the other day--momma was all DON'T YOU TOUCH MAH BABIES until the babies were safely away.

Got a pouch of treats if they ever show up again....

I, too, love animals.....but I'm seriously allergic, which I only discovered when I moved out of my parent's house and went off to college -- and, miraculously, was no longer a sickly kid.

Funny thing, though -- I'll be sitting at a party with 23 people in a room, and a cat will walk through the door, look around, make a beeline to me, and hop in my lap. I think they're attracted to histamine.

533 The only problem I have with animals is kids keep bringing them in and Dad is the one that has to deal with them; feed, them, clean up after them, etc. Of course I have the doodle, who was Laura's dog but is now my shadow. He really deserves a better owner, I just don't have time for an animal.

It's the "cat thing."  For cats, people who stare at them and want to hug them, etc, are seen by the cat as threats.  Because cats are weird.  So cats will go to the person who ignores them the most.  It's because cats are weird but also because cats are bizarro creatures.  Plus I can totally draw a liger and have ninja skills and stuff.  You'll never guess what movie I just watched, because you can't and stuff.

I'm sticking with the histamine thing -- I think they can sniff out a good source and want to get right up into it to produce as much as possible.

Listing race as a plus is racist.

If Obama was a flower, he'd be a dandelion. You actually have to plant pansies where you want them -- fookin' dandelions spread everywhere.

And, BTW, when we visited Saint Petersburg, Russia a couple of years back, one of the many bizarre things that we noted were dandelions that seemed two feet across and tall......they were IMMENSE.

554 Question which may be Firefox related:

Sooooo many Youtube vids (and other downloads) now have to download fully fucking completely before their very existence can be acknowledged.  (For instance, I cannot even see how large the file is, nor even get any other information on when it will download, until it's  fully loaded into my hard drive.)  Is there something in the settings I can change to fix this?

565 (Just Oprah being Oprah: Winfrey winning praise for performance in The Butler) The Butler A Vestige of US Colonialism I don’t think it is a particularly edifying thing to note that Filipinos have been the mess staff through history. But it is the truth. Today, only a few days after the global commemoration of the bombing of Hiroshima, almost no one remembers that more Filipinos died in the Battle of Manila than either atomic bombing. Hollywood is often careless with the truth and perhaps one day the Hollywood version will be the only “truth” there is. [With a video clip from "The Gallant Hours" (1960) movie featuring James Cagney as the Admiral,] The stewards also died with the ships. In the same fire, storm of shell or flood of inrushing water. And though some were at their designated action stations, in the nature of things doubtless some will have perished with a cup of coffee or a platter of sandwiches in their hand, for their God, their admiral and for their country. I was floored and delighted by Mary Hartman, especially Loretta, but didn't like Soap at first.  Never watched it.  Then, one night about 9 years later, I settled down and gave it a try.  It dawned on me that Soap is a cartoon!  If you replaced Burt with a penguin, the stories would hardly change.  After that, I loved it.
