Update: Miss Korea 2013 Contestants Not All Clones After All

You've probably all seen this gif showing how similar the Miss Korea contestants were thanks to the quest for a certain look along with plastic surgery:

0MMzzLQ

Well maybe not so much after all. Here are the before and after photos of the contestants and apparently most of the similarity was due to the miracle of perfectly adjusted lighting, hair, and makeup (and possibly Photoshop by Lancôme):

The Case That Never Ends: George Zimmerman's Wife Facing Perjury Trial

The story begins on April 20, 2012, at a bond hearing for George Zimmerman, whose bond had been revoked by Judge Kenneth Lester. Judge Lester's bias against George Zimmerman became so blatant that the Fifth District Court of Appeals removed him from the case on August 29, 2012, a rarity. Prior to that hearing, George was incarcerated and his phone calls and other contacts with Shellie were recorded. During the April 20 hearing, Shellie - who was in hiding due to credible death threats - testified by phone.

At issue is the existence of a PayPal account that had been established as a defense fund for George Zimmerman. The account balance was to eventually increase to a little more than $200,000, an amount that was to become a drop in the bucket of legal fees and expenses that still appear to have no end. At the hearing, all parties - judge, defense and prosecution - were aware of that account and were treating it as separate from the Zimmerman's normal finances (checking account and savings account).

Looking at the full transcript I don't see any perjury or bad faith answers. So yet another bullshit charge from the FL special prosecutor.

Glenn Reynolds: " Fuck 'em. I've had it with this crap."

It takes a lot to piss off Instapundit.

Battered Dogs Elicit More Sympathy Than Battered Adult Humans

Participants randomly received one of four fictional news articles about the beating of a one-year-old child, an adult in his thirties, a puppy, or a 6-year-old dog. The stories were identical except for the victim's identify. After reading their story, respondents were asked to rate their feelings of empathy towards the victim.

"We were surprised by the interaction of age and species," Levin said. "Age seems to trump species, when it comes to eliciting empathy. In addition, it appears that adult humans are viewed as capable of protecting themselves while full grown dogs are just seen as larger puppies."

I'm not sure why this is such a surprise or says anything in particular about our society- our empathy is often extended according to the context of the situation. A 1-year old child and a dog don't really have any moral culpability nor the means to defend themselves so beating them is pretty much an act of cruelty.  But a 30-something guy - well possibly not as much so they get more conditional sympathy.

British Army Nearly Court-martials Gurkha Soldier for Acting Like a Gurkha

A GURKHA under investigation for beheading a Taliban gunman has been allowed back on normal duty.

The Nepalese soldier faced court martial after he returned to base with the enemy fighter's head in a bag and presented it to senior officers.

He had decapitated the insurgent with his kukri machete, the traditional Gurkha weapon, during fierce fighting on the Afghan front line.

Luckily cooler head prevailed and he's been returned to duty.

True Fact: Gibraltar Has Been British Longer Than It Ever Was Spanish

Yes. Gibraltar has been British for longer than the USA has been a nation. It has been British for 300 years. The Spanish only took it from the Moors in 1502. So ... the British have had it for longer than Spain ever had.

But that's not stopping the Spanish from going down the Argentine path.

Hair Pirates of the Caribbean

Ladies watch your hair when visiting Venezuela:

Women in the city of Maracaibo in Venezuela should be careful when wearing their hair down. According to local news sources, a group known as "piranhas" are now stealing women's hair - and they prefer it straight.

The robbers will hold women at gunpoint in malls and tell them to tie their hair into a ponytail so that they can then cut it off and sell it to beauty salons as hair extensions, according to Venezuelan digital newspaper Informe 21.

14 Just a bit of randomness, like Breitbart I always read the comments. I especially like the comments on British sites, I see the words and understand them to be English words, but when they put them all together in a sentence, I have no idea what the Hell they are saying. Entertaining to me.

15 Red Letter Media has another "Half in the Bag" episode up, this time of both The Wolverine and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. http://tinyurl.com/knovgd9 This review was especially hilarious for me because they reference "the Irate Gamer" short review of X-Men Origins. For those of you who don't know IG is, he's a "reviewer" who lifted his shtick wholesale from the Angry Video Game Nerd, even going so far as to use exact phrases and other things from the AVGN. In fact, I had forgotten IG existed for a while until I saw the HitB review; to say IG's reviews are half-assed, sloppy, and lazy would be an understatement.

25 "We were surprised by the interaction of age and species," Levin said. "Age seems to trump species, when it comes to eliciting empathy. In addition, it appears that adult humans are viewed as capable of protecting themselves while full grown dogs are just seen as larger puppies." This makes sense. Dogs retain many of the juvinal features that wolf-cubs have and then loose as thy become adult wolves. So, in a way, all domesticated dogs are puppies because they retain puppy characteristics.

Perhaps, but many dogs will still defend themselves.

It's hard to breed out the natural survival instinct.

What if I gave someone a story where a grown dog mulled a child.

Oh wait, I actually have this in the book sitting right next to me, people will actually fight to have the dog not euthanized because it's "not vicious" or something.

(No really, case, I have it. The case For animal research by Micheal Allen Fox, page 15.  Dog mauls kid, parents try to put dog down, people go to court to stop them.)

80 DC, I'm heading into week three of some pretty intense pain.  I don't think it's a pulled muscle.  It still hurts after toradol and two different muscle relaxers and a cortisone shot.  I'm heading back in to the doctor this week.  An MRI is probably in my future.

91 I spent the weekend at a music festival in Longview, home of the one and only Ian Tyson. The music of great. I want to comment on a couple of things. Why do singers use the phrase "and it goes like this" in introducing their next song? How else would it go? I was watching a gaggle of poorly aged and drunken hippy chicks dancing in the beer garden to Roxy Roller. It was a generally uninspiring but one of the 60-year-old hippies was wearing what amounted to a glorified hanky as her top I've seen sweet young wear this type of top to good effect. This, however, was not a sweet young thing. No bra, boobs she could trip on and bare back--complete with back fat and rolls. Eeeew. She would be strong medicine for any dude suffering from one of those 4-hour boners. Why would she do that? Gah.

159 I used to see myself writing things down when I needed to remember lessons in school. When taking notes by paper people also tend to do more than just write down letters. They use arrows and other doodles to connect thoughts; and scribble between the lines/at the margins to group related thoughts together. As I recall from my psychology classes (which I didnÂ’t bring a laptop to because they did not exist, thank you and get off my lawn), this may assist in learning because it mimics how the mind remembers things.

If I donate a penny to the DNC, just to get on their mailing lists, and they send me out a bunch of mail that costs at least 46 cents per letter in postage and printing costs, could I actually sap their funds in any significant manner? how many people would it take, doing the same thing, for this to be a worthwhile effort?

I think that bulk mailings like they and other organization (not just politcal ones) actually get a discount so they aren't paying full first class mailing price for their stuff.  Though just a penny donation and mailing to you is likely still a loss.  I don't think any reasonable number would actually put a dent into their funds.

Hard to imagine that the money would be significant. But maybe there's an angle in polluting their lists of allies to near worthlessness. It's still a big ocean, though. Maybe one could get to a small pond by calling to volunteer with the local Commu, er, Democratic candidate, and then giving lots of stupid excuses why you aren't showing up. But they're probably used to that, considering what they have to work with. I dunno, still seems pretty ineffective. Maybe just spring for some hammer-and-sickle posters, and plant them in a few strategic places?

280 I didn't think that the Korean girls looked all that exactly alike, but then I tend not to be able to tell one generic Hollywood starlet from another. They all to the same hair, same make up, same expression on their faces, same body type... you know, whatever is in fashion for the current 15 minutes. Usually all blonds. Once in a while all the magazines and girls of the moment are brunette. Mouths all the same. I sort of liked Anne Hathaway because she looked like herself. And I realize that none of you morons ever had this trouble but it took me years to recognize a picture of Scarlet Johanson. Also... "they all look the same" is true. After being in the PI I went home and attended a high school choir concert. No more than 5 of the students had brown hair. The rest were blond. The girls all had the same long straight blond hair but some of them blasted their individuality to the world by having their wispy bangs swing to the right instead of the left. I worked with a Peurto Rican lady once who described moving to Minneapolis and walking into the school cafeteria and realizing that she wasn't going to be able to recognize her new friends... ... Scandinavians do *indeed* all look the same.

337 328 But just as it is utterly absurd to claim Director of National Intelligence James Clapper didn’t lie before Congress (and some reporters thankfully admitted that truth in the open), it has now become almost silly to insinuate or assume that the president hasn’t also been lying. Why? Because if that’s true — if indeed he hasn’t been deliberately lying — then it means he has been dangerously, irresponsibly and negligently ignorant of not only the government he runs, but also of the news breaking around him. There was a dog named Kati that some neighbors used to have -- a white lab, gettin' on in years, sweetest disposition, did therapy-dog stuff in hospitals, extremely well-trained....and another guy was walking his pit, Daisy, who was just obnoxiously wiggly friendly in that "I wanna rub myself all over you" way....so one day, I'm in the front yard, see Kati going down the street so go over to say "hi" and give scritches -- and Daisy runs up and starts wiggling her way inbetween.....and Kati actually growled. I was so shocked I nearly fell over.

So, yeah -- I could believe that pits can get on the nerves of other dogs, even if they are friendly and well-behaved toward humans.

345 At the pro drag races in Brainerd, MN there's a lot of camping and RVing by the attendees. And a certain hard-partying section of them is termed the Zoo. Well, one of the funny car drivers plus some of his crew go out to the Zoo and have some fun, but when they return find one of the gates that usually is open has been closed and locked. So they climb the gate and hop over. Except when the driver landed on the ground he messed up his ankle. Bad enough he couldn't participate in the race the next day. That's one embarrassing sports injury. Wonder what his sponsor's going to say about that...

Posted by: cthulhu at August 19, 2013 12:48 AM (T1005) I'm basically responding in general and not in particular. There's kind of a "Pit Mafia" that runs around the internet spreading *really* grotesquely ahistorical and unmathematical information about how Pits are really safe and it's like Labs or Goldens that are really the threat. The data isn't very good, but what of it there is indicated Pits are about 120 times as likely to make a serious (lethal?) attack as all retrievers (CDC). That's not to say every Pit is dangerous, heck, they're probably a lot less dangerous than people. But I get an itch behind my eye when people imply really, really, really unlikely things are common (or vice versa). It may not have been an intentional implication. And yes, I was the jerk that told people at work their Nieman Marcus Cookie story was not only not true, but it was maliciously making someone innocent look bad by spreading rumors. Seriously, how would you like someone putting flyers up around town indicating your were dishonest in business? I know, I'm no fun.

There is no question that pits can be dangerous -- if they are mismanaged for long periods of time. Well-managed pits can be loving dogs, family dogs, and good neighbor dogs. To blame this on some interior characteristic of a pit is, IMHO, rubbish.

377 It is important to remember that the basic unit of dog society is the pack, and that dogs are nearly unique in their ability to be in packs with other species (in most such situations, humans). Being that the great majority of dogs are never alpha dogs in natural pure-dog packs, it doesn't seem to bother them much that they're not the alpha-dogs in human/dog packs.

It's when people start thinking of them being in families, tribes, or republics that people make serious errors in dealing with dogs.

Terriers were generally intended as vermin control -- and, accordingly, can be seriously badass. Note, for instance, the sentence in the Official Breed Standard [ http://www.akc.org/breeds/norfolk_terrier/breed_standard.cfm ] of the Norfolk Terrier: "Honorable scars from wear and tear are acceptable in the ring." -- or from the Norwich Terrier: "A hardy hunt terrier-honorable scars from fair wear and tear are acceptable."

Or on the aforementioned "Parson Russell Terrier" (the official name): "Old scars and injuries, the result of honorable work or accident, should not be allowed to prejudice a terriers chance in the show ring, unless they interfere with movement or utility for work or breeding."

They actually don't. That stuff gets shit canned automatically. Link: http://tiny.cc/ssv11w

Word to the wise, don't go to the message boards there, it's a leftist cesspool (although I did meet my lovely wife there). I got banned after more than a decade of posting for insisting that one of the brain dead progs who was posting about the warmongering Jooos and the peaceful, puppy loving Palestinians accompany me to Israel. I would pay for both our plane tickets, then spend half an hour marching outside IDF HQ wearing a sandwich board covered in pro PLO slogans. He would do the same in front of PLO HQ with a pro Israel sandwich board. Strangely, he declined a free trip to Israel. I hounded the coward across the boards about it and was banned for "wishing death" on another poster (which I think kindda proved my point). None of the progs over there saw the irony, living up to their motto "Damn the facts, indoctrination first, last and always!". Bunch of absolute idiots over there, along with a few good people I'm still friends with and the greatest wife ever.

399 I was in the ER myself last weekend. My back hurt so bad I couldn't stand up straight and ended up crawling on the floor a couple of times just to make it to the bathroom. It really hasn't improved very much. I've pulled muscles before and this doesn't feel like that. I guess there is nerve involvement because I have shooting pain down my leg and occasional numbness in my foot. Have any of you all experienced this?

no good deed: I hope you're still awake to read this. It sounds a lot like the herniated disk in my lower back that I had last September. Horrible, horrible pain, leading to the near-inability to walk. See a doctor ASAP. Unfortunately you may need surgery to sand down the protruding disk so that it's not mangling the nerves in your legs. I was out of surgery and done with inpatient rehab in two weeks, although that still felt like an awful long time for me.

There is "NEW" tech available for back issues.

Lam's are now "Old School!!!

A very good Doc working outa Kaiser  Sunset is using a "Wedging"

process in which he insets titanium wedges to "re-align" the spaces between the affected vertebra ....has a good result rate thus far...I am watching this tech very closely....results are very in the + zone thus far......

The big meanie.

But, seriously, I should talk.....the first big day out with the BH and I was going to the West Coast Computer Faire in SF. Which is geeky enough to start, but was only the tiny seed that grew into a massive clusterfuck blossom.

First, I grew up in SoCal and both learned to drive and have always driven sticks. So I hate driving in SF with a passion and hate paying for parking even more -- and I've got a weird attitude about public transportation. Because the incarnation of Tomorrowland I grew up with was "A Future in Motion", public transportation is both a ride and a way to get to someplace else. Based on using the Skyway Buckets to cross over parades at Disneyland, I'm always tinkering with 'em.

So, I'm really gonna impress this chick -- we're going to BART right in to Moscone Center....like a BOSS! And we'll do it limo-style by starting at a lesser-used station on a lesser-used line, like......Orinda! No problem parking there! And I'll be able to impress the crap out of her by being wizard about all the cool stuff!

So, let's see.....it was raining, and it took forever to drive to the Orinda station, which was practically under water. Walking from the parking lot to the station, I stepped in a puddle so deep it flooded my shoe. [The good news was that parking was free and it wasn't crowded.] We successfully BART'd in and made our way to Moscone....whcih was where it was held the previous year.....not this one.....so we had to backtrack and find the new venue in the rain.....and when we got there, I kept squelching water in my shoe every time I took a step.

I'm sure the BH could add a few details that I have mercifully purged from my memory....but....here we are so many years later, and she still puts up with my peculiarities.

BTW -- wikipedia says that all WCCFs after '83 were in Moscone. They're wrong. The BH and I were at one in Brooks Hall, and we moved to the SF Bay Area in '86.

419 Don't Let's be beastly to the Talib When our victory is ultimately won, It was just those nasty Qaeda who persuaded them to fight And their Darya and Zaland are really far worse than their bite Let's be meek to them And turn the other cheek to them And try to bring out their latent sense of fun. Let's give them full air parity And treat the rats with charity, But don't let's be beastly to Pashtun.
