86 I doubt the Vikings swore off Ireland because of redheaded women. Scandinavia's prolly got more redheads than Ireland ever had.

Sherman, pull up the ginger distribution maps and let's take a gander at this hypothesis. Ah here it is:

RedHairEurope-670x554

Well the Scandis certainly know the heartbreak of Gingerness, but nothing like the Irish or Scots where over 10% of the population are afflicted. And then of course you have the Udmurt peoples of central Russia who seem to be super-Gingers as exemplified by Anastasia Ivanova.

7yIze

Note that all these populations seem to share the same MC1R mutation and difficulty thriving below the 45th parallel.

So about all we can conclude is that the Viking were never able to close the Ginger gap with the Irish. Whether it was the Irish Gingeresses that drove them out is still an open question.  And actually there is some evidence that the gingerhood in western Norway is actually due to Celtic slaves brought back by Viking raiders. So maybe it was a fifth column Gingeress kind of thing.

Start a Tea Party Group, Get Investigated by the IRS, FBI, OSHA, and the ATF

Which ended up costing the Engelbrechts approximately $20,000 and their non-profit group still hasn't been approved after three years. But this is just a phony scandal so move along citizen.

Professor: College Football Just Like the Tuskegee Study

What evidence do they have to back up this astonishing claim? "African American males composed the largest segment of football players (45.8 ) percent" in 2009-10. Since African Americans constitute less than 13 percent of the population, "African-American football players face a disproportionate exposure to the risk of concussions and their consequences." That's it.

Oh and the infamous Tuskegee Study wasn't quite the racial genocide it's made out to be.

73 Rules For Running For President As A Republican

Some of the pithier ones...

3- If you don't like Republican voters, don't run.

5-If you've never won an election before, go win one first. This won't be the first one you win.

6-Winning is what counts. Your primary and general election opponents will go negative, play wedge issues that work for them, and raise money wherever it can be found. If you aren't willing to do all three enthusiastically, you're going to be a high minded loser. Nobody who listens to the campaign-trail scolds wins. In the general election, if you don't convey to voters that you believe in your heart that your opponent is a dangerously misguided choice, you will lose.

10-You will be called a racist, regardless of your actual life history, behavior, beliefs or platform. Any effort to deny that you're a racist will be taken as proof that you are one. Accept it as the price of admission.

65-Never hire consultants who want to use you to remake the party. They're not Republicans and you're not a laboratory rat.

70-If you are convinced that a particular running mate will save you from losing, resign yourself to losing because you've already lost.

73-Make a few rules of your own. Losing campaigns imitate; winning campaigns innovate.

Oppression by Capitalist Words

While we're on the subject of odd Guardian articles - odder than usual, I mean - here's another. Owen Hatherley, formerly a contributor to the Socialist Worker and Socialist Review, is today telling his readers that "capitalism is altering our language" in dastardly ways that must be resisted. He knows this because he regards unique, individual and choose as "particularly acquisitive words." For him, it seems, the words unique, individual and choose signify first and foremost avarice and rapaciousness - nasty things like that. So no tendentious altering of language there. As you might expect, Mr Hatherley is also unhappy about the word consumer, which, he says, is "a word we now use entirely unthinkingly to describe the 'consumption' of everything from shoes to food to health care." Note the use of we, by which of course he means you're the ones "unthinkingly" talking about consumers, unlike our mentally nimble class warrior, who wishes to "reveal the pernicious assumptions behind these professedly innocuous words."

I'm guessing that the mere titles of Milton Friedman books would make Hatherly's head explode.

Criminal Background Checks For Shooting Ranges?

Apparently so as Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller found out when he went to shoot at a local range.

The 24-year-old All-Pro was trying to enter the Centennial Gun Store and Range just outside of Denver -- and submitted to a routine mandatory background check, as required by everyone looking to shoot at the range.

But the background check revealed a warrant out for Miller's arrest -- which was issued back in January after he failed to appear in court to face multiple traffic violations.

According to law enforcement, Miller had been charged with careless driving, driving without a license and having no proof of insurance back in October 2012.

Miller was taken into custody at the gun shop -- and was hauled to a nearby Sheriff's Dept. where he was booked

Granted Miller was an idiot but is this a common practice? And wouldn't this tell authorities exactly who has a gun and is shooting it?

12 232 Only in Democrat America would this make any sense. The head of the Travis County (Texas) Public Integrity Section of the County Attorney's office is arrested for DUI, convicted, and serves time in jail. As is "her prerogative" says the Democrat Party she stays in office, presumably running the Public Integrity section from jail. That's tough on meeting partners, but it must have made a helluva impression on public officials she was investigating. Anyway, the Governor calls Bullshit! on this crap, and cuts state funding for her office until she quits. She begins investigating the Governor, and a Texas based Democrat public integrity group yammers on in court filings about how the governor is a meanie to drunken Democrats in jail. Court agrees (Democrat judge) and appoints a fucking SPECIAL PROSECUTOR to investigate the Governor for trying to fire the drunk, jailbird Democrat. Filmer's representatives were observed in court asking everyone "How'd you do that?". I made that last part up. http://cbsloc.al/19u8Aep

The permits may take as long as 30 days, and may even be denied due to bureaucratic snafus. The waiting period for buying a handgun, by the way, a handgun in California is only 10 days (technically ten 24-hour periods). More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=3001

One of my favorite books in the whole world was Ken Follett's Lie Down with Lions.  It's quite old, but it made me want to go there and never leave.  One of the pre-chapter quotes was "the daughter of the lion is also a lion."  It's burned into my brain.

118 Section 8: I live in a development with more than a few Section 8 "renters". Fortunately, our units are glorified apartments ... mid-70's construction. There is really nothing to trash. However, we have a few "problems" ... the police bust someone every 3 months or so, but nothing violent. I assume it's coming. There is a "smokers club" very close to me. They live the reggae song "I Smoke 2 Joints in the Morning ..." Sometimes, I can smell the weed, from 100 feet away, through 10's of yards of open air. I thought that much smoke, that dense, could only happen if you/they/someone had Cheech&Chong-grade special effects ... I periodically see men that I do not know ... in very late model cars. Where DO they get the money??? I haven't been shot yet, or threatened, but statistically ... What the video says about Section 8, and what at least 2 commenters here have posted, is true. If you have property to rent, do not rent to Section 8. At best, you will lose money.

However, Leo, Taurus, Gemini, Scorpius, Sagittarius and Virgo have some really, really great objects to look at. Libra, Aries, Pisces, Aquarius and Capricornus are incredibly boring. Cancer is a one-trick constellation.

If you watched to the end, he said that he and his wife bought the house to raise a family there, but the neighborhood tanked- murder in the next block, gunfights in the street- so they left the house they owned to rent one where they felt safe. In a neighborhood like that, I doubt they could have found a renter that was not sec. 8. What do y'all expect him to do, let the house sit empty? Again, this is based only on his statement at the end of the video. I have to say, the "before" pictures showed a very nice house.

Conservatives and liberals mostly still can't talk to each other, even if they share an area of interest. Sooner or later it comes down to the incompatible worldview. Detroit with armed citizens would be better than Detroit without, but it would still be Detroit.

257 We thought when the Tea Party Republicans were home this month, they would get a reality check. We were wrong: they are so entrenched in their radical ideology that they have set about lying and cheating in order to fool the American people into believing them. TheyÂ’ve even doubled down on their threat to shut down the government if Obamacare isnÂ’t defunded. We have to bring this fight to them in their districts right now. If you step up immediately and help us reach $200,000 in our Rapid Response Fund, we can get out the facts and make them back down.

If you rent to a Sec 8, you have to figure on NOT getting that tenant contribution as part of the deal, because you WILL NOT get it after a month or two.  You adjust the rent rate accordingly so the govt part covers what you need to get 100%

264 Damn. It actually exists. "Participants group themselves around a rope that has been tied in a knot to form a circle. Players squat down around the rope, holding the rope with both hands. At the count of three, all players lean back and-using the energy of the group-they stand up. When everyone has stood up (and cheered), players can, on the count of three again, carefully lean back into a squat. In this game, the counterbalance support that players provide to one another is a graphic representation of mutual support and cooperation. It’s a totally different experience than Tug-of-War, which can be a painful exercise that activates aggression and leaves players in the dirt. (This game comes from Maria Sapon-Shevin, “Because We Can Change the World”)

These dipshits always seem to have a blind spot for the Christian concept of Free Will. Being "good" because an oppressive and overbearing legal structure forces you to be "good" doesn't cut any ice with God. But being "good" when the world is filled with tempting opportunities for sin does.

Btw, there are some ancient remains from an unlikely area with red-haired people and wool plaid fabric.
Wool. Plaid. Woven textiles. Fabric.
Yep. As in needs a loom to make. And ya not only gotta raise sheep but ya gotta shear 'em. And then, etc.

330 I skimmed "73 Rules for Running for President as a Republican" but I didn't see anything about treating the media as an adversary. They are, and they will waste no opportunity to frame a question in Leftist terms and perspective.
Until the Republicans learn to reject the embedded Leftist premise in media questions they will get suckered into saying something stupid.

334 26-Principles inspire; overly complex, specific plans are a pinata that can get picked to death. If youÂ’re tied down defending Point 7 of a 52 point plan that will never survive contact with the Congress anyway you lose. Complex plans need to be able to be boiled down to the principles and incentives they will operate on. The boiling is the key part. Says rule 26 of a 73 rule list. A 73 rule list that concludes with a rule encouraging candidates to create THEIR OWN rules. Presumably to add to and/or replace the 72 rules they've just slogged through. But remember, complex plans need to be boiled down.

343 This thread (and the beer) has put me into some serious reminiscing.

Nine ships.

USS Fort McHenry - not attached, rode it long enough to run from a typhoon.  First night underway.  In a typhoon.  Didn't puke.

USS Belleau Wood - gotta be a redneck to be proud of the fact that your ship has a bigass 3 on the side.  And I was.  And for as big a flight deck as that was, the spots were tiny.

USS Essex - first time dealing with Marines underway.  Goddamn they get in the way.

USNS Kiska - first experience with MSC.  Food is not as good as I had heard, but I had my own room.  LTJG living like a CDR.  Hell yeah.

USNS Spica - Brits built a bar in the wardroom, but USN wouldn't let us stock.  Smallest flight deck I ever saw.

USNS Flint - ammo ship.  Port visit = anchor out and ride the boat.  Was still fun anyway.

USNS San Jose - now this is the life.  Not only had my own room, with a forward-facing porthole, I had my own, private head.  Outstanding.

USNS Niagara Falls - good det, better port visits.  Singapore, East Timor, Australia.  Australia.  Fuck yeah.

USS Bataan - I stayed in for this shit?  WTF?  But I did get to see the Suez Canal, the coasts of Djibouti and Kenya, and some oil platforms near Iraq.  Shit, I could have been out and doing contract flying in AFG.  Fuck!!

Posted by: Yip at August 19, 2013 11:27 PM (/jHWN) Some are like these people who have a nice house/apartment/condo/duplex that they need to rent ASAP since they poured a shitload of money into renovating. Then they discover the what Section 8er's are like. The others know what the tenants are like, so they don't do much to the apartments. Carpet or hardwood floors? Nope, vinyl flooring. Cheap cabinets, cheap appliances, cheap fixtures. Everything can be replaced cheaply, thus earning the title of "slumlords" from the media and Section 8ers.

Probably the only way he could. The home owners bought it for $220K, and after the market crashed, the neighborhood got real sketchy, and the home was then worth $20K. That was not a typo. Wife wanted to move to a safer neighborhood, so they rent the house out and the only takers in that neighborhood was a Section 8er.

380 Why would he rent a new house to a Section-8?

First time landlord probably.  All tenants have a  good story, theyz gonna be the bestz promisy promisy.

Like House says "Everybody lies".  You say no pets, a week later they got three dogs.

They promise no loud parties or rowdiness, a month later you find out the police have been there 3 times already.

The promise they're clean, no drugs, then they're getting busted for dealing crack out of the bedroom window and you're replacing the doors the cops smashed in.

And then...three unregistered junk cars appear and you're getting code violation notices from the town.

I did wonder for a second about which of the voices in their head they were arguing with, but, you, know, it's not worth it. Sometimes people miss discussions from earlier in the day, and they get upset, and bitter, and it gnaws at them. You know, like when you're ten years old and you have to do homework instead of going out for pizza with your friends, and there's totally never going to be a pizza like that again ever in history, and all your friends will turn against you and make fun of you behind your back forever because you weren't there. And then there's the isolation therapy, and what you don't know when you're a kid is that the therapy makes it worse and not better. So you grow more isolated because of your fear of isolation and it's like a never ending spiral into darkness. So. Anybody want to go out for pizza?

That attracted skilled immigrants. Skilled legal immigrants. Legal.

I wouldn't classify myself as stupid, but I am just as full of shit as the next guy.

Y'know.....I'm thinking there needs to be software to "disappear into the mist". Since there is so much freakin' computer power out there, what it would do is use your computers to conduct RANDOM Google searches every few minutes.....and "watch" RANDOM YouTube videos, half the time going off a link that it had just "watched". What if your computer visited RANDOM blogs and RANDOMLY followed links from them?

Imagine if each computer you owned did each of these 360 times a day, every day.....then imagine if all of your friends used it, too.

I'm thinking that the software could be named "KnockThatShitOffNSA", and could be very popular.

But it never actually is stored or viewed by humans on your system. It's just sent to /dev/null -- the same out that Google uses when their spiders crawl the webz, I'm sure. I have two active ones right now -- AT&T's, which handles video, but then kicks internet down to my own LinkSys router for the internal net. One of the features I like in the LinkSys router is that there is a DMZ'd "guest" network that doesn't access LAN resources.....so it's three logical routers in two boxes.

488 I'd have to say, however, that I would NOT recommend the LinkSys and have vague inklings of replacing it whenever.....but, being that it's for an issue I didn't see in any reviews, I suspect that many routers at this price point with these features have the same issue.....and that is, the router is only marginally configurable locally -- you have to use a cloud-based configurator to setup more advanced options. Anyone who believes that this Cisco configurator isn't completely compromised by the NSA -- and, because the NSA are fucking idiots, the Chicoms using the same protocols -- should absolutely feel free to buy one.

That's what I'm afraid of -- they're all similarly compromised and that's the only way to get the nifty features -- USB 3.0 NAS, guest networks, gigabit ethernet, NAT, etc....but there are many out there who are similarly irked -- http://tinyurl.com/kf7hk8h

With the new NSA stuff coming out, maybe someone will market a router that specifically isn't NSA compatible or cloud anything.

But I built it wisely, it's handled everything new just fine, even though the processor is from 2008 and the video card from 2009. Haven't yet hit a game it won't hack, though I can't do the super huge multi-monitor 8000x5000 stuff some people do.

507 I'm mainly shakin' my head at the total narrative style of the explanations of things and brainstormin' on what could be better. For instance, let's say you're a conquering horde coming into a new area......and you look at a plant and go, "what the hell is that?" Well, if your new slave says it's a "gimgim bush", than so it is -- what the hell do you care? Would you change burial customs among the commonfolk? Maybe to throw 'em in cesspits, but it really ain't your problem -- let 'em hang from trees or put in pits or bake in clay urns.. How about the grammar of the language? Would you let them ask "would you like a gimgim?" or insist on "would you a gimgim gladly have?" -- I think I'd whip the slave that screwed that one up a few times.....so what behaviors would associate with "A invaded B and kicked their ass"; "A migrated to B and outbred them"; "A migrated to B, and then to C"; nasty fucks from D pushed A into B territory, where they formed an alliance to keep those D bastards out"; "A traded in B and C, but B was the resort area where all the sophisticated A's ended up", etc.? Why would you START with the narrative and then cherrypick the data to support it -- instead of reviewing all the data and seeing what narrative filtered out?

Mind you, the history you get is from the most literate -- whether they won or lost -- and they'd be trying to spin things in the best light for themselves.

I'd have to say, if you lost control of your culture, your religion, your language, and your haplogroup.....er, you got pwnd, no matter what the books you wrote might say. If you did painted pottery, and are now doing stamped; if you cremated people and are now burying them; if you are now speaking a different language "because it's better"; and all the kids have red hair....yeah, preach it in that scroll you're writing, 'cause all the evidence in the real world is goin' agin' ye.

Posted by: cthulhu at August 19, 2013 11:57 PM (T1005)

512 Anyhoo -- so the general thought is that redheadedness may have actually arisen down in the area just east of Turkey, and started expanding rapidly towards the north and northwest, only to have another group follow on behind towards the northwest -- so the Udmurts are possibly more "original" but got pushed off to the side....while the "celts" got run across northern Europe and over the British channel and off into the hills.

Or, as I suspect is a bit closer to things......they spread across most of northern Europe through a keen lack of appreciation for indigenous folkways and general ill-temper, but then were followed by a similarly ill-tempered group some centuries later that kicked 'em off most of the continent and ran 'em up into the hills and isles of Great Britain.

517 As some of you may know, a couple of years back, the BH and I went to St. Petersburg, Russia, and (among other things) visited the Hermitage. While we were there, I got to revisit several memorable pieces that I'd seen 30 years before in a special exhibit of Scythian art.

If you received a good education in the US between the 1770's and 1970's, you "knew" that the Western World was based on Greece and Rome, and that Mesopotamia [Iraq] was a "cradle of civilization", and that white people were "Caucasian". It probably never hit you why these things didn't fit together right.

Just think about that for a bit -- the Caucasian region was supposed to be a backwater -- but, somehow, everyone's white great-great-great-abuncha-greats-grandpappy hails from there. Which just happens to be the place where wild apple trees grow outside of cultivation, and where a hillside of wild arugula is a common sight.

Of course, being behind the walls of the Russian Empire, and later the USSR, it didn't make things easy.....but there were more than hints that central asia held a few secrets.

There is a huge buried history in central asia, and a lot of what's in textbooks ain't nearly half the story -- if it ain't wrong from the get-go.

.....and that was kind of the source of my irritation back a few. If you were in a relatively homogenous group on a plot of land for five generations, and then people from the east started buying local real estate, but 10 years later you realized all your cousins lived in the hills to the west.....what do you call that? Would it matter if you started carrying a sword like they did, or if you were forbidden to do so? Would it matter if you changed your language for them, and regularly ate food foreign to the area?

524 Late getting on as I work weird hours. I bought a house in Phoenix in '88 while stationed there (I live in Michigan now) It had been rented to a Section 8 tenant for several years. It was a single mother with a preteen son. It got to the point where she wasn't paying rent, my property manager wasn't doing her job, so I hired a lawyer, fired the manager, and kicked out the tenant. I hired a new property manager and he eventually got into the house and sent pics. Similar to the video, the place was trashed. Last year my brother and I flew out there and fixed the major stuff up in a week.  Then the new property manager took care of the rest although the expenses came out of our pockets. All in all, it was a major hassle as well as expensive but the new property manager is looking out for our interests and we've had no problems with the current, non Section 8 tenants.

You don't have to travel to see there is one Truth. Take Obamacare -- all the critics said that if you expand what insurance have to pay for, insurance rates will go up. That is real, that is reality, that is truth, it doesn't matter if you're speaking Croatian, Swahili, or Welsh. The Administration said that it was "racist" and have been trying to run news stories about premiums going down. Guess what? Truth is Truth.

Just to put this into perspective -- Sarbanes-Oxley was a law passed in 2002 that mandated a whole-bunch of corporate responsibility measures in every publicly-traded organization.....regardless of whether they totally destroyed the company's market value.

I spent 2004-2008 making this fundamentally misguided piece-of-shit work halfway efficiently. On balance, I'm actually proud of what I accomplished -- but barely -- and so few did it as well that the law (though still on the books) has been fundamentally abandoned.

You're starting to hear about Obamacare "Navigators" who are supposed to be as expert on that law as I was on SarbOx. You're starting to hear about problems and people lacking a background. I'm a prime candidate.

If I were to give my honest opinion, Obamacare is wrong for everyone -- if you're young, you're overpaying -- if you're old, it won't be there when you need it. I would rather starve than contribute to this clusterfuck, and preserve my good reputation.

I'd love to be working with a company that made something, and help inform management that they'd better invest in Quality Control and less in Sales Promotions, or less in Customer Support and more in Product Development.....but those jobs are in China or India.

O worked for Harley=Davidson corporate for about 20 years. I know all about the Damage of Sab/Ox. It costs us millions.

I could have had it cost you fewer millions, actually improved your processes, and cost less with time to the point where you actually might want to keep the system even if it weren't the law....but lawmakers have essentially walked away from that POS.

"Change is good, you go first." was the mantra. I think if we had a new manufacturing renaissance we would see our capabilities explode. Many of the old guard has disappeared and that could usher in a round of creativity.

I agree in part and disagree in part.....I'm in Silicon Valley, and have been for a while -- like attending the West Coast Computer Faire thingies back in the day. The problem is the echoing chasm between old and new.

Let's take a little side thing that I'm still considering as a valid business.....and, BTW, if a moron makes a couple of million on this, I'd appreciate a kick.

There is a commercial widget from China that does small-scale CNC http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=31661 -- they have it for woodworking, but it's CNC, so you can do whatever you want with it.

Only problem is, the tools have to be 4mm shank and are held by a setscrew. All the tools -- and there ain't a lot -- for 4mm are expensive. In the US, a 1/8" collet is the preferred way to hold tools.

For an old-school guy to make a 4mm/eighth-inch widget would be child's play.....because he would know his tools. New guys, that would be difficult.

If you really want to see American greatness, you have to use the old guys' knowledge and "show up every day" with the new guys' energy, numbers, and use with odd materials, subassemblies, and parts, to come up with things that add serious value.

Don't mistake me, I think it can be done. But it's not A v. B, it's A+B.

552 I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.

Yes, as a pipefitter/Millwright that got his degree and worked his way up. I see your point. A collet is a collet, a shiv a shiv and a gear a gear. However, whenever we wanted to try something new, pushback and out and out sabatoge by union employees negativity by management seeking to protect their section of a mythical kingdom and a board of directors that wanted to "Make hay while the sun shines without a view of consequences, for example, saving money on cheap motorcycle batteries that failed by the thousands and stranded numerous bikers, pissed off bikers, kept us from a long term strategy that could of expanded our brand from the niche babyboom market to the younger generation.

556 That sweet house the Section 8 trash destroyed makes me tres angry...especially regarding the eviction of these squatters. This man is far calmer than I would be with his investment and loss via mortgage fiasco and destruction.

557 I think that is a picture of Fitzroy Maclean with the Special Air Service in 1942 from his book "Eastern Approaches". He's in the foreground wearing the dagger in his belt. The Long Range Desert Group was a noncombatant survey group that operated at extreme ranges in the Libyan desert, making maps and scouting enemy installations. Maclean relates that the SAS was formed to parachute behind enemy lines for sabotage, but the first few missions suffered from errors of navigation and dispersal. After the SAS commander, David Stirling, was rescued by an LRDG convoy, he determined that in Libya the SAS should drop behind enemy lines, but instead drive there and back with an LRDG convoy, and separate to visit the target from the ground. So your photo could be captioned "SAS/Long Range Desert Group" and if it is Maclean in the photo it was taken before 1943. He had moved on to other theaters by then.

558 "As you might expect, Mr Hatherley is also unhappy about the word consumer, which, he says, is "a word we now use entirely unthinkingly to describe the 'consumption' of everything from shoes to food to health care.""

This is exactly why the word "customer" was replaced with "consumer" 30 or so years ago. "Consumer" can be turned around and be labelled with negative connotations, just like the commie in the article said. It was a deliberate word choice, no question.
