Overnight Open Thread (8-20-2013)
— Maetenloch

Well since I'm feeling kinda tired and lazy I'm just going to grab 10 random browser tabs and call it an ONT. Because I can.

What's Worse Than Being a Terrorist? Being a Terrorist manager

Terrorist leaders also face a stubborn human resources problem: Their talent pool is inherently unstable. Terrorists are obliged to seek out recruits who are predisposed to violence -- that is to say, young men with a chip on their shoulder. Unsurprisingly, these recruits are not usually disposed to following orders or recognizing authority figures. Terrorist managers can craft meticulous long-term strategies, but those are of little use if the people tasked with carrying them out want to make a name for themselves right now.

...For terrorist managers, the only way to combat those "counterproductive activities" is to keep a tight rein on the organization. Recruiting only the most zealous will not do the trick, because, as the alleged chief of the Palestinian group Black September wrote in his memoir, "diehard extremists are either imbeciles or traitors."

Ten Simple Things You Can Do to Be Happier, Backed by Science

Most cost $0 and can be started right after you make just a few more ONT comments. Oh who are we kidding here - it's not gonna happen.

Mother Jones Meets the Mob

Welcome to my world, Kevin. Just so as you know, this rule goes also for Obamacare, the economy, foreign policy, firearms law, and absolutely every other area of public policy. I have been called a "racist" for so long now that I'm almost looking forward to a Hillary presidency so that I can be called a "sexist" instead.

Apple patents tech to let cops switch off iPhone video, camera and wi-fi

Really Apple?

But they may not need to fear scrutiny much longer - Apple has patented a piece of technology which would allow government and police to block transmission of information, including video and photographs, whenever they like.

All the coppers have to do is decide that a public gathering or venue is deemed "sensitive", and needs to be "protected from externalities" and Apple will switch off all its gear.

The police can then get on with the very difficult task of kettling protesters without having to worry about a few beating anyone to death.

Apple insists that the affected sites are mostly cinemas, theatres, concert grounds and similar locations, but it does admit that it could be used in "covert police or government operations which may require complete 'blackout' conditions".

Update: Eh never mind. This seems to be a bullshit rumor being peddled by Russia Today.

John Gardner's Grendel

This afternoon, I start Grendel, John Gardner's 1971 novel telling the story of Beowulf's first great opponent from the monster's point of view. The version I've got is identical to the one I read in Modern Literature my junior year in high school, where Ms. Martin, her hair in a severe bun but her eyes twinkling with delight, introduced us to post-modernism, existentialism, and the absurd.

Are Your Car's Sounds A Lie?

Strangely, to give people the impression that the Impala's engine was working as intended, GM had to partially mask its real sound.

...But as you reduce the speed that the drive shaft is rotating, you lower the frequency of the sound it's making. There comes a lower limit where the engine is making what Gordon calls "groan-y and moan-y" noises which people find unpleasant. The car sounds broken. So cars had to keep the engine's RPM above a certain level, hurting their fuel efficiency, or risk alienating customers.

GM's solution was to implement active noise cancellation, the same technique used in some headphones to quiet ambient noise.

15 Prayers are needed for my mom. She fell again last Sunday. She had a UTI and was delirious. This is her second fall in less than 2 months. I am kicking myself around the block for not getting the Life Alert even though my SIL said she was going to get it. I never should have counted on it. Now she is back in re-hab and a very uncertain future. She has already been told she won't be going home. She is depressed. I am scared to death. I don't want to put her in a home.

55 10 to 20 watts on HF is a good start and plenty of fun can be had but to participate in your regional 80 meter band discussion group you really need more like 100.  1000 is maybe too much but it keeps the radio room warm on cold winter nights.

83 Jewells, have they done any tests to rule out Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus? I ask because my grandmother also had a lot of those same symptoms before she had a shunt put in. Her recovery afterwards was really remarkable (after the dimwitted doctors got everything properly calibrated). It's something to look in to because it is somewhat fixable and can lead to a more independent life. Just make sure that if she does have it, that you get the surgery done somewhere like Barrow and that she gets lots of PT afterwards.

So sorry.

I said to one of my elders that she really did need to be careful regarding falls.

Pshaw, she said. And then fell. And suffered life-altering injuries.

I don't know what part of the brain stops working after age 60 that gauges fall risk assessment, but it seems to be amazingly consistent.

I suggested in all seriousness that the family start buying the sorts of modular padded rubber tiles that cheap mallfront martial arts dojos use to keep their insurance bill down.

I'm certainly going to do that for myself. Got to keep at least a modest distance in between my own self and the death panels, er, the federal elderly medical quality assurance boards. I want to make sure today's twentysomething Obama voters are on the hook for my care for a long, long, long, long, long time.

104 Terrorist leaders also face a stubborn human resources problem: Their talent pool is inherently unstable. Whaddaya know? Terrorists have to deal with upstart idiot millenials, too.

108 Torque, it's the proprioceptors.  Chronic decreased blood flow in the brain from plaque in the tiny arteries leads to a gradual, almost imperceptible loss of function in some areas, and also in some peripheral nerves.  The ones that tell you where in space your body is tend to go first.  So, as we get older, we are getting less feedback on where are feet actually are, and it becomes easier to trip or misstep.  All the medications usually don't help either.

130 So I saw Elysium (no worries, Damon got no $ from me). Some decent vfx. Otherwise it's a love letter to socialism, free healthcare for all, and open borders. Spoilers: Elysium is a space station above earth where everyone is white or asian and all diseases have been cured. Earth, meanwhile, is a hellhole where everybody it seems, except Damon, is hispanic or black and the scratch out a living making robots for the white richey-riches in the sky. And occasionally speaking Spanish. Damon sacrifices his life to break into Elysium and reprogram the computers so the robots go bring all the sick billions on earth to Elysium and cure all their diseases for free. Bad guys are power hungry white bitch politician, Jodi Foster, greedy white defense contractor asshole dude, and psychotic white special forces military dude. Good guys are Matt Damon and everybody who's brown or has a Mexican accent. Finale is literally reprogramming the computers to change the citizen status of all the brown people on earth from ILLEGAL to LEGAL and seeing all the sick hordes on earth, numbering in the billions, being brought to the space station, numbering in the millions, for their free magic health care. It's reasonably well made as a movie and has some cool fx scenes. I just think they need to incorporate more left-wing ideas -- maybe something about gun control or access to abortion. Anyway as socialist and anti-white race hate propaganda goes, it 's fairly well done. Message: white people (except Matt Damon) and capitalists and the military are evil, racist scum who would gladly let all the sick brown kids of the world die rather than share their gated community and manicured lawns and magic cancer cures.

Here is how I described Emily's personality in story that is now 1,600 words
 - self centered with a streak to torment her parents.  She feels they ignored her for her brother.  So is very radical against all her father has worked for to support her.  She still accepts without a ripple in her conscience the apartment that costs $3,000 a month, she figures she is sticking it to her father and getting revenge.  Her current boyfriend is another way for her to get back at her parents.

143 "The last fall I really think she had too much medication in her and after talking with her primary care doctor we got her off most of it."

There was an MD who back in the USENET days used to post fairly prolifically in the various sci.med.* newsgroups. (If that doesn't mark me as an official Internet elder, I'm not sure what does.)

He was a specialist in gerontology, and one of his stock answers to stock questions, when asked what condition he saw most frequently among his elderly patients, was "Overmedication."

Yep.

It's absolutely unbelievable how many pills your typical retiree is shovelling down these days. Often with multiple meds for the same condition having been prescribed by different doctors. Love you, Medicare Part D.

This gerontology guy said that his typical patient was a sweet little old lady with the "weaks and the dizzies" who was taking fifteen to twenty different pills a day. He said that the weaks and the dizzies usually go away once the prescriptions get cut back down to a reasonable four or five genuinely necessary meds.

But guess what happens to the little old ladies with the weaks and the dizzies who don't get that situation squared away in time? They hit the floor hard in a fall and get badly hurt. Almost as though being weak and dizzy predisposes people to falling, or something. Who knew?

But said "the Republicans, all of whom pretty much hate Latinos (citizen or non-citizen) with all of their hearts..." It was to narrate a novel he wrote about people who patrol the border and those who seek to subvert the laws pertaining to immigration. I blew my top when I read the above quote. My mom would alternately scold and praise me, I think. I just feel stupid and sad that I blew it. I don't have a lot of hot buttons but this guy's attitudes toward "undocumented immigrants" hit ALL of them.

173 151 Good evening, good people. Birthday for Spastic Lab today. She is now 4 years old. I got her a cupcake, and we split a pint of ice cream. She thought that was just fantastic. Posted by: irongrampa at August 20, 2013 10:58 PM (SAMxH) I have a lab mix that was a rescue. We decided the 4th of July was his birthday and gave him a whole footlong hotdog with ketchup, mustard, and relish as his birthday present. No onions. My wife said onions are toxic to dogs, as are grapes, chocolate, and sugar free gum. My other lab had to sit there and watch him eat the whole thing. Heh.

It's also a part of baseball. Pitchers do protect their team and just as some people need killin', some players need hittin'. A-rod being the shining example of the latter.

182 10-20 watts and a decent antenna
doesn't guarantee world wide coverage, but it does 'work' after a fashion (depending on circumstances) and it's a lot of fun. More fun if you build it yourself. $300 bucks (US) is a good price, if the equipment is any good, but it's probably not as good a a 'good' Japanese rig that sells for 2K bucks (US). Good places to buy used equipment are called 'ham fests'; 'flea markets' for used electronic equipment.  I've spent some time  with 100 watts or less output, and random wire antennas. It was a lot of fun.  CW (Telegraphy) works better with weak signals, poor antennas, and lousy antennas.

If you want guaranteed world wide coverage you need high power, BIG antennas. It's like the NASCAR people say "a good big engine beats a good little engine every time".

If you're thinking survival situations you need to do some research on 'SigInt' (Signals Intelligence)

185 "Torque, it's the proprioceptors. Chronic decreased blood flow in the brain from plaque in the tiny arteries leads to a gradual, almost imperceptible loss of function in some areas, and also in some peripheral nerves. The ones that tell you where in space your body is tend to go first."

That's my understanding.

But what I was referring to isn't the decline in the vestibular system, it's the decline in cognition. Something gets to the executive function in later life where suddenly older people seem to lose their ability to competently assess certain risks. To include fall risks. I have seen this repeatedly.

"Granny, *please* be careful. You've seen what happens to other women your age who have taken hard falls. Your bones are fragile now."

"Pshaw. I'm fine."

Thud. Oh shit.

I expect crummy risk management skills to be a regular feature in teenage boys. To find equally crummy risk management skills in long since retired grandmothers was a bit of a shock. And it's so widespread that I wonder about whether it's a biological syndrome.

186 Terrorist managers can craft meticulous long-term strategies, but those are of little use if the people tasked with carrying them out want to make a name for themselves right now. Heh. Sounds a lot like Mao's criticism of Che Guevara's "foco shortcut". "Mao assumes that before guerrilla action can begin, the people must be made aware of their oppression and ready to fight the enemy of their own accord. Guevara disagrees, stating that while certain conditions such as class consciousness are necessary for ultimate victory, they are not necessary to begin guerrilla action. He argues that these conditions, “very rarely come to exist spontaneously” and can instead be created through military action (Guevara, 1960, p. 56-57). This would later be known as the “foquismo,” or “foco,” theory of guerrilla warfare. Put simply, Guevara believed guerrilla forces could kick-start the revolution themselves, creating the necessary conditions as they fought." http://tinyurl.com/laejel5 'sup jackwagons

233 I read about the terrorists in Europe in the '60s and they were captured because of the inherent weaknesses the author speaks of.

First, they were nuts and often killed their followers either on purpose or by accident. Their craziness alienated many, who then escaped and went gratefully back to middle class life.

And it took at least two surveillance-free people on the outside to maintain one terrorist in hiding, getting money to them, finding safe houses, etc. It is really hard to do as police eventually roll up all their known associates.

IMHO our weakness is that we don't have the guts to do that. We never followed up on Tsarnaev because of political correctness. Fatal mistake. They were begging to be caught.

251 The sad thing is, it would be at least as much if not more fun if you showed the link to the "church sign maker" website and then showed off the joke you made, and invited people to make their own.

But "this it totes for reals" seems to be a human instinct of some kind.

Exactly. But I'm not sure it's instinct so much as "you'll think this is interesting if you think it's real", and yeah in a way I guess we all like to think things are real, like we're a part of something instead of just something some dope made up.

On the other hand, most of us here at the HQ like jokes. Jokes are really funny when we know they're jokes. Although if Meggy Mac really was a regular here, that *would* be funny.

275 I had one of the Henry US Survival AR-7 rifles for a couple of months -- just sold it a couple of weeks ago. The take down and compact storage thing is novel, entertaining, and certainly useful. Current versions of this rifle are well made and are very reliable. I found, though, that I could not get comfortable with it. I just could not get a decent group with the thing, although my son liked it and did well with it. The thing comes with 2 magazines and the receiver will fit in its storage space with a third magazine in place. It's a handy rifle, but I would not buy one as a general plinker or trainer.

That depends on your attitude, mostly.  You catch fewer flies with fingers and taunts.  Speculative questioning, on the other hand, seems to go a long way.

If you're wrong and ill-informed, admit it.  That's easy.  You brought the broken-ass feather-duster to a gunfight.

Philosophy goes as far as the difference between light and shadow.  Stomp around the gray, and get called out.  That's now in your boat, Cap'n.  You can repel the boarders -or- light a fire -or- take on water, just as easily.  Welcome to life!

328 Last night Isis came to the door proving what an efficient huntress she is.  Dangling limply from her mouth by the scruff of its neck was a dead field mouse.  Then had to try and persuade her not to bring her trophy indoors.  The impasse was solved when Roo stole the mouse and ran outside with Isis in pursuit.

330 is it me or are not enough people making the point that stop and frisk is not racial profiling if everyone in the neighborhood is black? If NYPD was on fifth and 50th, where the majority of the people are white and asian and only stopping balcks and hispanics that is possibly racial profiling. however, if you go to the hood and stop and frisk everyone is the same race, or more importantly there is no "whitey" to compare against in a racial profiling way.

Was worried it was worse even faster and he wasn't seeing anyone. Hope he is spending time with family. Sadly still seeing doctors up here for now, Did the USCF thing and now Davis and maybe Stanford (where I should have gone first). UCLA maybe later, especially if they cure tooth decay I'll break in and steal the formula. Otherwise my plan is Don't Die and that's it. I have no other plans. I do want to come see you and Grim and the horses and do fun stuff and sit around and BS pretty mightily. But plans are kind of a luxury right now. Working on big intro letter and paperwork for Davis cardiology now. They sounded more like people who think about things rather than people who hand out pills and say "see you in six months." If I find a way I will come visit.

Cause he may have had a real argument for the orange then. The Pie part is just cause he likes pie though.

Re the comment about what changes in the brains as people age and falls, I wonder how much is physiological change, and how much is a kind of delayed psychological change?

Maybe the two together?

I am 55, and had a hell of a fall a couple years ago, tripping over my own feet rounding the corner from the front hall into the living room--racing the loop through dining room and kitchen with my teenage daughter and the dog, playing keepaway with a squeaky toy.

I fell full length WHAM, and just had to lay there for a minute because it shool me up.  I wasn't hurt, but I had the distinct sense that that was something I SHOULD NOT DO anymore.

My father in law (80 in a few weeks) told me something that resonated about 7-8 years ago, when he was still playing tennis regularly (!):  he said there were a lot of balls that he knew he could get, knew what to do with, and also knew (after a few strains and bumps) that if he went for them he'd hurt himself.  He smiled and said it was really hard to struggle to just let them go, and say "nice shot".

Part of it is definitely physical change, but I think another part is that you don't really think about it until you have to:  you feel fine until you don't, you know?

My grandmother didn't think about how old she was until we gave her this huge 90th birthday party, and she said for the very first time in her life she actually thought about her age and it freaked her out considerably.  She got a lot quieter after that.

jewells,

My best wishes for your Mom.  Her issues sound a lot like my Grandma who we took care of.  Falls an UTIs and the whole deal.

I'll tell you a story that might give you hope.  About eight years ago I had to take my 99 yo Grandma up to the hospital to see her youngest sister.  Aunt Helen 92 and certain to die.

She didn't but because of circumstances they sent her to a nursing home w/ hospice figuring she would die soon.  Since then my Grandma passed at almost 104 and Sat. we go to Aunt Helen's 100th bday party!

Keep the faith and try to get your Mom out of her funk.  Tell her about Aunt Helen who is a eight year survivor of being put on hospice!  Drs don't know sheet sometimes!

"Then he made the sea of cast metal. It was round, ten cubits from

its circumference."

If you do the math using those measurements, pi=3. QED.

Eh, it was three different guys' cubits.....

Posted by: cthulhu at August 21, 2013 12:23 AM (T1005)

Wait a second -- they measured with a line? As in, they took a pre-measured piece of string around the thing?

Well, then, if you look at the various cubits at  http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles/am/v2/n2/original-cubit -- it would have been perfectly reasonable if the measurement from brim to brim were in Babylonian cubits (50.3 cm) and the measurement around used an Egyptian (long) cubit rope (52.3 cm). That gets you 503 cm across and 1569 cm around -- which accords pretty respectably against the mathematical circumference of 503*pi, or 1580 -- 11 cn being about 1/5 of a cubit.

The ancients weren't idiots -- they mostly used standardized cubit bars on projects -- but it's pretty hard to measure the outside of a cylinder with a solid bar.

He seems to combine all three with a particular love of restoration era period, and a sort of free for all subject matter. If you like that then it helps A LOT. Posted by: gushka's got a Kitty what plays fetch! ! at August 21, 2013 01:18 AM (r7Ddb) I'm looking for something in molecular resolution that's laid back and won't experience too much stress through my medical travails - or deliver too much stress. I know, I'm too picky. ... I really could be less alone, I just have enough people stressing over this crap, I don't want to drag anyone into it. It would help me, them not so much.

713 Interestingly, a lot of the commentary regarding the NSA has mentioned the "Five Eyes".....which, of course, makes me think of Groaci -- but, evidently, there is such a thing [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AUSCANNZUKUS ].

WRT internet snooping, it looks like one of the institutional tricks is to route stuff from, say, NYC to LA by way of Winnipeg -- because, doncha know?, the NSA bar on domestic snooping is totally avoided if data crosses a border -- similarly, data probably goes from Vancouver to Quebec via Omaha. Looked at that way, you have two pairs (USA/Canada, NZ/Australia) where it'd be really, really easy to arrange such a thing -- and the UK, which probably has some arcane stuff about the Isle of Man being sovereign territory when it comes to signals intelligence, due to a treaty from 1635.

I have long suspected that the future internet will be far more canny about security than mere "paywalls" or "registration". I envision that anyone hitting a website will get a "key", with website content encrypted to it -- if you came in from typing the URL, you'll get one kind; if you came in from a search engine, you'll get another; if you came in from a trusted link, you'll get a third; and so on. As you use a key, it will become increasingly trusted until it gives you another key -- which will be the first one never transmitted in cleartext.

With further use, you'd be handed further keys -- which would only have been transmitted over the internet in a manner encrypted with the previous key (and, BTW, the encryption methods can vary among levels and keys).

A lot of stuff would include a photo to indicate provenance....because they're so hand for manipulation (my current resolution is 1920 x 1200 with 32-bit color -- if you sent me a picture that was 1/100 as big (192 x 120), you'd have 23,040 pixels to play with....if each one was either left "natural" or decreased by the lowest-significance bit in the color palette, there is no way anyone could ever see the difference -- but there'd be 2^ 23040 unique pictures. Mind you, 2^33 comes out to 8,589,934,592 -- or a smidge over the current world population of 7,106,133,290.....so you could give each pass of a Google spider a different image, as well as a different one to each user on each visit -- but if you had a copy of your image, you could immediately tell which session and which user had copied it.

And all this stuff would be running in the background -- your user experience wouldn't change a bit......if websites and browsers decided to provide this functionality in an open-source and verifiable manner.

The BH has a tech support/customer service department that she established in High Point, so I went out there in the spring and toured around a bit, thinking to land somewhere a bit more sane and less bankrupt than here.....put 2500 miles on a rental car in 10 days between NC and TN.

The kicker seems to be getting the benefits of a city without paying for it, while being able to have some space and some quiet. So, for instance, you'd want to be able to take off work early, have dinner in Manhattan and see a show on Broadway.....but not have Mayor Bloomberg pat you down, confiscate your guns, or keep you from buyin' a Big Gulp.

And I'm not quite gettin' how this plays out in NC. It's weird -- Asheville is Santa Cruz without the ocean; Charlotte is San Francisco without the bay.....Raleigh is much like the "official" parts of Sacramento, but without a lot of the neighborhoods.....so there are correspondences, but I'm not fully clicking on way things work. I also visited Gastonia, Thomasville, and Asheboro, and each was sad -- though just as pretty as the rest of the state, just as favored by climate, geography, and population.....but sad. I drove all over the place, and there was a whole lot of nice places.....but not a lot of nice things that people had done with 'em.

What gives?

721 After already serving two terms as German Chancellor, Angela Merkel visits Dachau, announcing her bid to stay for a third term in office. The visit would be conducted with a sense of "shame and dismay," she said. Merkel's visit to Dachau comes less than a week after she officially launched her election campaign for a third term as chancellor. Well, if she loses her bid for extended term in power, using the dead to promote her own political career wouldn't have worked. Whatever happened to R.I.P.? It's said the living pray for the dead, and the dead pray for the living. Why would victims of NAZI Germany pray for Angela Merkel's political victory? If it's the first time Merkel has visited a NAZI prison camp, worse for the wear.

I've been to Dachau -- the place is haunted. But that's not a reason to avoid doing speeches there -- the silent monuments tend to emphasize the dangers of government power.

723 That doggie debate is funny. Especially the 'read the Bible' which proves the Presbyter missed out on all those references to seraphim and cherubim and all sorts of unnamed, unearthly creatures (winged beasts) serving God. Four Creatures in the Book of Revelation These amazing creatures have features in common with both the Seraphim, in having six wings and continually praising God; and like the Cherubim, that they number four, are covered in eyes and look like a lion, ox, man and eagle.

Posted by: panzernashorn at August 21, 2013 02:33 AM (MhA4j)

724 722. I don't think Merkel's making a speech. Just a show of solidarity with the dead. However, she's already been in office two terms. If Dachau Solidarity were a point that mattered to her, she'd have been there before "needing" a political boost for her third shot to office, chancellor for life akin to Der Fuhrer. Of course Dachau is haunted. So is the battlefield at Gettysburg. Anyplace where so many died under such dire circumstances will be haunted. If the place is hallowed, sacred, then it should not be used as a political prop. That's sacrilege.
