Public Morality and the Case for Neo-Realism
But American foreign policy cannot merely be defined by R2P [Requirement to Protect] and Never Again! Statesmen can only rarely be concerned with humanitarian interventions and protecting human rights to the exclusion of other considerations. The United States, like any nation-but especially because it is a great power-simply has interests that do not always cohere with its values. That is tragic, but it is a tragedy that has to be embraced and accepted.
And our national interest in Syria is....well mostly keeping Syria's troubles inside Syria.
And that leads us to the 'To Hell With Them' Doctrine which is pretty much where I'm at.
The sad reality is that in order for the Arab world to have a chance at any real peace, a whole lot of Arabs will have to die:
America forgets that it corrected the flaw in its founding by killing 30 percent of Southern men of military age during its own Civil War, so many that the Confederate Army collapsed for lack of manpower. There are numerous wars which do not end until all the young men who want to fight to the death have had the opportunity to do so. And of all of history's conflicts, none was so likely to end with this sort of demographic attrition as the present war in the Middle East. Compared to the young Arabs, Persians and Pakistanis of today, American Southerners of 1861 were models of middle-class rectitude, with the world's highest living standards and bright prospects for the future. The Europeans of 1914 stood at the cusp of modernity; one only can imagine what they might have accomplished had they not committed mutual suicide in two World Wars.
Today's Middle Eastern and South Asian Muslims have grim future prospects. The world economy has left them behind, and they cannot catch up. Egypt was at the threshold of starvation and economic collapse when the military intervened, bringing in subsidies from the Gulf monarchies. The young men of the Middle East have less to lose, perhaps, than any generation in any country in modern times. As we observe in Syria, large numbers of them will fight to the death.

Why I'm Not Up in Arms Over Greenwald's Boyfriend Being Detained
Because when you choose to act as a freelance espionage agent and boast about carrying a state's leaked secrets, don't be surprised when you get a little Official Attention when you pass through that state. And no the title 'journalist' doesn't exempt you from the law either.
What seems to be forgotten here is that Greenwald has already published a great deal not only about the secret activities of the NSA but also those of its British partner, GCHQ. (Among the early headlines generated by Snowden's theft was the news that GCHQ had spied on the Russian delegation during an international conference in London.) Britain takes that kind of thing seriously-its laws, notably the Official Secrets Act, are tilted much more heavily toward preserving government secrecy than are the laws in the United States. Which is why it makes perfect sense that British officials would detain Miranda when he happened to alight in their jurisdiction.
He was not on a pleasure trip. He was traveling from Berlin, where he had met with Laura Poitras, a filmmaker and anti-American propagandist who, like Greenwald, has been one of the key enablers allowing Snowden to reveal the existence of classified NSA activities whose outing can only help America's (and Britain's) enemies. Miranda was, in fact, serving as a courier between Poitras and Greenwald: "Mr. Miranda told reporters in Rio on Monday," according to the New York Times, "that all of the documents encrypted on the thumb drives came from the trove of materials provided by Mr. Snowden."
US Government To Issue Secure Online IDs
Tom Groenfeldt reports in Forbes that the U.S. Postal Service has awarded a contract to SecureKey to implement the Federal Cloud Credential Exchange (FCXX) designed to enable individuals to securely access online services at multiple federal agencies - such as health benefits, student loan information, and retirement benefit information - without the need to use a different password or other digital identification for each service. SecureKey already operates a trusted identity service in Canada using identification keys provided by one of five participating Canadian banks. It allows Canadians to connect with 120 government programs online with no additional user names or passwords for everything from benefits queries to fishing licenses.

Who Does College Partying Hurt Most?
The poorer girls with similar credentials ("strivers") who got on the party track tended to emerge with low GPAs, unimpressive post-college jobs (frequently jobs that they could have gotten without a college degree) and burdened with debt. They actually often wound up with downward mobility, rather than the upward mobility that colleges sell. (Interestingly, the "strivers" who did best were the ones who transferred to less-prestigious regional state universities, which were also often cheaper. These schools - the Northern Kentucky Universities of the world - focus more on teaching, and are often more oriented toward student success, frequently in a less party-oriented atmosphere). The big schools, for the "strivers," were often an expensive detour.

Painful to watch in more ways than one. Note that bullet-proof vests do not protect the target stand holding the vest up. And Samir may not be able to hit a target. This is one video I'm hoping really is fakey-FAKE.
How To Reply to a Legal Threat
29th April 1971
Dear Sir,
We act for Mr Arkell who is Retail Credit Manager of Granada TV Rental Ltd. His attention has been drawn to an article appearing in the issue of Private Eye dated 9th April 1971 on page 4. The statements made about Mr Arkell are entirely untrue and clearly highly defamatory. We are therefore instructed to require from you immediately your proposals for dealing with the matter.
Mr Arkell's first concern is that there should be a full retraction at the earliest possible date in Private Eye and he will also want his costs paid. His attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of your reply.
Yours,
(Signed)
Goodman Derrick & Co.

Dear Sirs,
We acknowledge your letter of 29th April referring to Mr. J. Arkell.
We note that Mr Arkell's attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of our reply and would therefore be grateful if you would inform us what his attitude to damages would be, were he to learn that the nature of our reply is as follows: fuck off.

Chris Rock Gave Porn To Dying Kid
"I had a Make a Wish kid, like a 15-year-old kid dying of cancer, and I snuck him the, uh, Pam Anderson sex tape. He's dead now."
To which Seinfeld replied, "But he lived a little more." I think this is one of the best stories of celebrity altruism I've heard in a while. A lot of celebs do charity work in order to make themselves look good in the public eye. But what could Rock possibly have gained from secretly giving a sick boy a video where Pam sucks Tommy Lee's giant shlong? Nothing but the satisfaction of knowing that he perhaps gave the kid a little bit of joy in his time of dying.

"Should I Leave My Husband For My High School Crush?"
I'm 32 and married with two young children. Recently I reconnected with one of my best friends from 20 years ago online. We have always had strong feelings for each other and after high school checked in on each other a few times throughout the years. But because we've always been with other people, we respected those boundaries. He has always been verbal about his feeling though I haven't. We have been able to talk to each other like no one else. In February I went to visit him and the feelings were too intense for both of us. We talked everyday, he repeatedly told me he loved me and wanted to know did I love him (although he is also married with two kids). Eventually it got physical. ...He called me 30 minutes later to tell me how much he loved me and hasn't returned a call or email since then. I just want him to tell me that he fell out of love, or he thinks we were in the wrong. Or whatever the reason was . Why won't he at least do that?
Followed by some harsh but honest advice from the columnist.

Recently invited to apply for the position of Content Expert Writer (CEW):Insurance for Answers.com. The process was interesting: an intense, comprehensive on-line writing and editing test and a requirement to craft real answers for several Answers.com entries (both within and without my subject area).
They took a few weeks to they evaluate the candidates (there were apparently several), and today they offered me the gig ("there can be only one").
Needless to say, this position is in addition to my real job and blog (hey, I'm just like AllenG and BC!), so I'll be learning (re-learning?) some time management skills.
Oh, did I mention that it's a *paid* position? WooHoo!
And Happy Birthday, Peaches!

The last time we actually installed real democracies in crazy countries was after WWII when he blew the countries to hell and the occupied them for four years. We destroyed their will to fight and their sick cultures.
There is no way to do it on the cheap or by promoting dialogue and inclusion and all that crap. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Lybia, Afghanistan are monuments to that failed idea.

More than 20 years ago, John Northen led a group of police sergeants who filed a federal lawsuit charging they were unfairly denied promotions as the result of a flawed lieutenants exam.
Now, Northen has filed a complaint with the Independent Police Review Authority, forwarded to the inspector general’s office, accusing Weis of “failing to take appropriate police action” during the news conference Friday in crime-ridden Englewood.
After 26 hours of violence that left 41 shot and four dead, Weis summoned reporters to the 6600 block of South Marshfield Ave., site of at least two of the shootings.
As the media event drew to a close, an aide tapped Weis on the shoulder to tell him about the nearby shooting. Apparently unaware of what he was about to be told, Weis told a television reporter asking follow-up questions that he’s “gotta run.”
…“Jody Weis is a coward. I don’t want to see a coward leading the men and women of the Chicago Police Department,” [Northen] said.
“I’ve talked to people at the scene. Somebody even timed it with a mars light. He was only 45 seconds away from officers going in on a perilous assignment where one man ended up dead. He should have responded to the scene and backed up his men. This guy went the other way. He cut and run. He’s a disgrace. If he was a blue-shirt [low-level officer], he’d be an outcast.”

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think somebody in that crowd (perhaps the guy who was standing there holding the thing over his head when the first round landed 20 meters in front of him???) would have asked the question as to how wise it was to carry out the demonstration in that manner.

Great day today, hall monitor okayed a short trip to the County Fair. No problems with the knee (used a crutch) and ate a ton of fair food. Bestest were the french fries drowned in cheese with a big handful of bacon sprinkled on.

we have very old dear friends. Wife, who is usually wonderful, had a bi-polar breakdown about 12 years into their marriage and cheated once with an asshole. He took her back, and they got her mind right and got counseling too. He swore he would only stick around until their kids graduated high school, and we all supported him in that thinking.
They are still married, 30 plus years now. Kids out of college, one getting married and the other going to medical school. They are happy. They still love each other. I marvel at them

Here's the "rule". Never do anything that you wouldn't do with your Wife there. For myself, that is fairly inclusive, but it does not embarrass the woman I've chosen for a Holy Union.
Can I embarrass her? Sure. Would I allow another woman to embarrass her? No. Fucking. Way.

Arrogance or desperation. Women especially seem to believe that their coochies are magical and will make a man faithful after he leaves his wife for her. Men, on the other hand, are likely to believe that his status/wealth/etc will be enough to keep her faithful Or they just don't care and are fucking their secretaries.

For it to become widespread? Yeah, about a generation. They've already started to normalize it. That was part of the goal with gay marriage: to claim that since gays "aren't monogamous", we as a society need to rethink our hangup on monogamy in relationships. The push now is starting for polygamy to be accepted as normal and natural and healthy.
I say it'll take a generation because they'll use this generation to normalize a lot of this stuff and then feed it to the next generation. Instead of "Heather Has Two Mommies" kids will get "Heather's Mommy Has A Special Friend" and "Johnny's Three Parents".

To a large extent, WWI was just business as usual but technology had made such events so much deadlier that the old pattern could not continue. Though it took WWII to drive the lesson home.
I've suspected for a while that ME policy in the last several years has been towards creating a conflagration that would drain off most of the young males of a generation and make the region quiet for a while. The trick is doing it without screwing up the oil business too long or too deeply, and not letting Israel get wiped out along the way. Even if my Jewish ancestry didn't give me a bit of bias, Israel is a technology wellspring in the midst of a region that offers damned little to the world in new ideas. From a purely economic standpoint, losing Israel (assuming the populace doesn't successfully flee) would be a bigger blow than a few years of disruption to the ME oil output.

My standard response to the gay marriage debate is that marriage has one socially useful function: paternity. It's the principle reason why the government has any interest in relationships, and the reason why libertarians who think that "the government should get out of marriage" are fucking morons.
You know who a child's mother is pretty damn quick, but up until about thirty years ago there was no way to truly know who a child's father was. Marriage was society's way of dealing with that uncertainty. A husband was assumed to be the father of any children borne by his wife. This created stability and eased things such as inheritance and created a stable social structure to ensure that children were cared for.

--I think ignorance of the effects of the technology had some effect, but nevertheless diplomacy since the Napoleonic Wars was successful; the only conflicts among Great Powers were short or geographically limited (Crimean, Austro- and Franco-Prussian Wars). The Great Powers were also smart enough not to let squabbles over sandy outposts in Africa or Central Asia drag them into a general war.

you can be a moral being and be an atheist
sometimes a marriage can survive cheating
cheaters, of any kind, rarely prosper
not too judgey, but cheating is a disaster for a family, especially the kids
it murders trust and stability

Religion =/= belief in God. Religion is more about a belief in mankind's place in the universe, expectations about what a moral life, shared rituals that bind a group together, etc.
You can have all of those things without believing in a deity.

Also, Japan has a 144 game season. 18 games less a year for the first 7 years of his career.

He's kind of nuanced on how he likes to argue that though. But of course he's also pretty candid in saying that on Bullshit, its the Christians that have the most polite and kind responses when they go after them on the show.

Look at how coordinated they were during the Boxer Rebellion in China, barely a decade before WWI. There were well-nigh incestuous relations among their royalties. I have no doubt that Germany would have been an economic superpower if the pre-1914 trends had continued (Made in Germany was almost as pervasive as Made in China is now); who knows what peaceful transition there and in the Ottoman Empire would have done for the world?

Posted by: Ashley Judd's Puffy Scamper, aka MrCaniac at August 21, 2013 11:56 PM (BXLPR)
Polygamy will actually be easier than gay marriage. Advocates will find some nice white upper-middle-class couple and their girlfriend to be the face of it. She'll maybe have kids from a previous marriage. They'll have kids as well. The argument will be that it's not an 'open marriage' but instead three people who are committed to each other.
Most of the guys watching will think "Twice the pussy!", while women will think, "Extra help around the house" and be reminded of how cool they were in college when they told everyone that they were bisexual.

His strategy of being a 'ghost rat' didn't work out so well when they found out he flustered easily while being yelled at, so he became a favorite target.

A priest who taught me in high school left the priesthood to marry the mother of a fellow student. She left him after "reconnecting" with her high school sweetheart, although the last I heard she was with someone else now. I felt sorry for him a while, but he remarried soon afterwards anyway. Plus, I don't really like him now. This is not about priestly celibacy. It's about him being dishonest & condescending. (Hint: he considers himself politically "moderate".)

Ace has more familiar contact if you're on Twitter
Unlike Breitbart, Ace doesn't read the comments much, especially at night unless he's notified that someone is taking major dumps on the thread and have to be dealt with.
One way to get his goat is if he tells you to knock it off and you start a filibuster on why you are completely justified for doing what is pissing him off
We have so many funny, pithy, and astute commentators here that the competition is fierce and you have to come up with something really funny or profound to get good attention from him
He did an ONT a few weeks ago when Maet was out, that's one of those rare occasions when he comments on the ONT or even reads the comments

At the point where automation becomes more cost effective, it will be implemented. They're just looking to speed up that day when you can press a few buttons on an app and pick up your burger when you get there.
The lefties were passing some "study" that doubling wages of the burger flippers would only add 17 cents per dollar to a meal.
Then it was found that the "study" was done by a Kansas State economics undergrad

--I'm sure I've mentioned this here before, but my most surreal dining experience overseas was Papa John's --in Shanghai. I was starving after a day walking all over being a tourist on foot. The twist is that it was a Papa John's where I was seated and served by wait staff. I could even order beer. I can scarcely recall a tastier pizza in my life under the circumstances. Pizza Hut was also considered a big draw and during supper hours had long lines out the door in Ningbo.

any advice re: best man speech?
Posted by: Gandalf'sLoveStaff at August 22, 2013 12:23 AM (OqeDl)
Remember the purpose of the best man speech, or -- indeed -- of the best man, is to support the groom in front of the bride's family and the community. The speech isn't about you, the event, entertainment, or purely ceremonial.
That doesn't mean it can't per personal, reference the wedding, be witty or humorous, or have toasts to the health of the hall -- indeed, these things improve the speech immensely.....so long as they support the purpose.
If you're brainstorming in a hurry, try the seven cardinal virtues [not quite so well known as the "Seven Deadly Sins" they echo] -- Prudence, Justice, Temperance [or Restraint], Courage [or Fortitude], Faith, Hope, and Charity....and then you can use humorous/personal/entertaining anecdotes to illustrate them. Things like [for Fortitude], "we swore we'd never tell our mom what happened there, and we both got paddled -- even though he was only keeping quiet to cover for me." Or, "he tracked me down in the jungles of Borneo to return that sock I'd left in the dryer."

I'm misusing it. In mathematics, it means that your function value goes to infinity at a certain point (dividing by zero, for example). In economic discussions, it just means the graph is going off the chart, and accelerating in the process. In this case it's the ratio of the other currency to the dollar, so since the value of a dollar is not accelerating to infinity, the other currency is heading towards zero.
That's desirable if they're selling to us (they sell more stuff and we get more stuff), but it's a problem for their imports (like say if they need to import food) and any exports we may have to them.

I strongly recommend it. It's as good a time as any to do a clean install to get that new system feel, plus if your SSD is significantly smaller than the drive it's replacing, you may want to take the opportunity to review the contents for stuff that isn't needed an y more and just wastes storage space.

That is absurd. The need for degunking via reinstalls passed with Win9x. NT derivatives never had most of the same issues. And that was reduced further still with Vista and onwards because a lot of software behavior that had long been frowned upon by Microsoft finally was no longer allowed by the OS at all. This is why there has been a lot less value for registry cleaners post-XP.

Did see some Porn, though. Everybody doing a SF or fantasy parody wants to shoot there. Sometimes they don't go that far out though. When I was working at Nexus, a place that mainly installed telephony stuff in 1999, the company next door was Foundation Imaging, the folks who'd done the effects work for Babylon 5's first three seasons.
One day they were using the field behind the buildings for shooting what appeared to be some kind of soft-core scene that was going to need some effects post work. Work at Nexus kind of ground to a halt for about an hour as we observed. Never found out what the production was.

Yeah, if you've got the product key you should be able to go to microsoft's site and get the .iso image for your version, then just burn normally.

There was a good book back when it was needed called 'Degunking Windows.' It drew on the automobile metaphor for suggesting that some ares needed a proper cleaning regularly to avoid more severe repairs. It stopped applying in most ways after the Win9x branch died out.

Speaking of odd filming locations -- Bill and Ted University? My dad built that. Or, rather, he was in charge of the City of Los Angeles project to have that built and supervised the contractors. At the same time, the City was experimenting with 4/10 shifts for hourly employees, instead of 5/8....which generally meant management worked 5/10 -- beat the crap out of him.

I'd expect she has some piece of the back end. Which is often traded for a lesser per episode salary to make the production more affordable and hold out for that big payout.
Even if he was only getting a quarter of what Harmon was earning, it still put him well in the six figures per season, which is pretty nice considering how much time that left him for other work.
Somebody might know what was happening to him but nothing has been disclosed yet.

The actor who suicided two days ago. He was a supporting character on 'Rizzoli and Isles' and had a lengthy resume for a 29 year old.

There were a vastly greater number of Indians than previously believed but they scarcely left much legacy to the founders of the US beyond what has been well documented. Even then, the contribution pales before the influence of people like John Locke and Montesquie, The die off was so thorough and so long in advance of exploration of the continent's interior, that it wasn't until centuries later that archaeologists were able to discern evidence of what once existed. You can hardly be influenced by people who died without a trace decades before your own birth.
That there were greater numbers than previously believed and they had some interesting structures is interesting from a historical point of view but in terms of a lasting legacy falls under 'shit happens.' A lot of people died but those who'd innocently introduced the cause had no idea what was happening and could only bring the contagion to North America because their ancestors had been dealing with it for countless generations. It wasn't as if small pox and other contagion were not still felling many Europeans. They were resistant but not immune.

Much of the problem we have is that those creating money off of wealth are spitting on those creating wealth out of effort. "You didn't build that." "At some point, you've made enough money."
Apple has a new thing on their website, "Designed by Apple in California" -- which I find breathtakingly lame. How about "sketched on the book cover of a physics textbook by a stoner who got a D in the course"? Designing doesn't create value until something is MADE. I've designed all sorts of perfect gizmos and zaftig women.....and all it qualifies me to be is a fapper.
But at least I'm not the sort of self-absorbed fapping idiot that discards the value of growing, extracting, or making.

Some ideas, like "hey, that river floods every year, we need some way to decide whose land is whose when it goes down" yield permanent wealth, with which the rest is built. Archimedes' name will still be known when all our billionaires and 99.999% of our material productions are dust.
Since the academy is the source of this kind of wealth, it was really careless of us to let it be stolen by our enemies.
Posted by: phunctor at August 22, 2013 05:15 AM (kjwIf)
The problem with your argument is that land surveyors generate no new wealth -- the crop after a botched survey is the same as the crop after a good one. The academy is a source of fapping, nothing more.
