Al Gore: Hurricanes Now Go to 6 Because Global Warming

Vaccaro told me that the possibility of adding a sixth category to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale ratings, the well known system that ranges from Category 1 to 5, has been raised in the past, but, contra Gore, there are currently no plans to do so.

Moreover, categories are defined solely on wind speed; Category 5 hurricanes, the class with the highest wind speeds, are hurricanes with winds measured at or above 157 miles per hour (I neglected to ask if Gore's bluster has been known to qualify). In other words, Category 5 currently includes anything that could possibly be considered part of a sixth theoretical category. There has not been a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean since 2007.

Remembering the Ploesti Raid

Seventy years ago this week--on August 1, 1943--more than 170 B-24 bombers lifted off from American airbases near Benghazi, Libya.  Heading east, they struggled against the desert heat and the weight of their bombs and fuel load.  Operation Tidal Wave had begun.

The plan was to take out the Nazi oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania and starve the German military of fuel forcing a quick end to the war. A good plan except that the Germans were prepared:

What followed was a slaughter.  The 93rd Bomb Group lost 11 aircraft over the target; the other groups suffered similar, heavy losses.  Some of the bombers flew less than 50 feet above the ground, dodging smokestacks, barrage balloons and other obstacles.  Gunners on the B-24s reported firing up at enemy anti-aircraft guns on nearby hillsides.  But the crews never wavered; despite withering AAA fire, steady attacks from enemy fighters and heavy smoke that made flying even more difficult, the American crews pressed home their attacks, at great sacrifice.  Five Medals of Honor were awarded to aircrew members on the Ploesti raid, three of them posthumously.

The second lesson of Ploesti is a central tenet of modern warfare: powers who depend on distant oil supplies--often controlled by unreliable allies--are at a terrible disadvantage.  With the eventual loss of Romanian fuel supplies and synthetic oil plants, Hitler's war machine eventually ground to a halt.  Japan suffered a similar fate when U.S. submarines sank most of the tankers carrying crude oil from the East Indies to refineries in the home island.  B-29 raids on those same facilities administered the final coup de grace.

Eight decades after Ploesti, the U.S. remains dependent, to some degree, on unreliable foreign sources of oil to fuel its military.

91 I'm saving up the first three or four episodes to watch with friends who don't have access to AMC and my effing PVR won't let me transfer the shows to disc using my DVR so I can't give them discs of the shows. It ticks me off because with the old ordinary cable hookup and my DVR there was no problem copying anything coming through the cable.

oh and I want to clarify something I said on the book thread this morning, in case any of my ONT friends took offense. It's not that I don't think books should have girls as the main characters (obviously, I am a girl, I am pro girl heroine), it is just that I would like to have some books where boys are the main characters and they aren't major fuck ups in one way or another so my son has something of value to read. Thankfully he loves science fiction so we have been able to jump right over most YA fiction, but they force them to read it in school and the choices are usually so limited for a kid who doesn't want to read yet another book about a brave girl who saves the dumb boy.

Absolutely.   As someone who reads a fuckton of YA, it's infuriating that there's very little for guys.   It's to the point that if it has a male protagonist, I'll probably buy it just so that I can add some tiny tiny contribution to the notion that there's a market for it.

278 True story - back around 2006 I was safety officer - one of the worst jobs on a ship.  Had to babysit a crew of about 1200 dumbasses, and had to submit injury reports anytime one of them hurt themselves bad enough to miss work. When I started, the report was a message - basically an email, usually less than a page, with a pretty standard template.

Then some genius at the Naval Safety Center decided to implement a new system where you would make your reports online.  Lots and lots of dropdown menus, but written where each change would reload all the choices in the boxes below it.  Would suck ass on normal internet, but was absolutely unusable on the limited bandwidth underway.  Especially back then.  One simple message, I counted 120 page loads.

And that's how military internet works.  I can't believe DoD invented this shit.

283 The BH and  I did a hike at Castle Rock State Park and had our butts kicked relentlessly for about three hours, so it's anesthesia time. Clambering over the rock formations on the trail wouldn't have been so bad without the sheer 100' drops over the escarpment on the side, so we did 'em very slowly and very carefully. The BH ended up with two bloody knees, where I just have a few lighter scrapes here and there.



Interestingly enough, we did the outbound hike on the Saratoga Gap trail by Castle Rock Falls -- and thought that was horribly unpleasant. The ridge trail returning was much nicer, until we passed Goat Rock and it dipped back onto the damned escarpment again. The worst section was when we'd just been passed by a group of youngsters, and 20' later they were like, "WTF? The trail just ended!" Only after we repeatedly asked if they were sure did they find we were expected to climb a 7' rock to continue on the trail. We let 'em scamper on before we followed (that's the place the BH skinned her knees).



We've decided that it's probably called "Goat Rock" because you have to be part goat to get there.

And there is nothing gained by their illegal activity. The first season is a bit slow compared to the rest. It's also only 6 episodes due to the writers strike. However, the creator said that it gave him more time to think where he was going and he rewrote the plot. The following seasons are excellent. It is also beautifully filmed. A lot of foreshadowing.

The writing often surprises me but i've got to believe that since Walter usually functions as the hidden spider behind all the bad things and violence that happens, the series will come down to a point where Walter steps out into the open both as Walter White and as Heisenberg and takes responsibility for what he's created and what's happened because of him. The weapons? I'm guessing very bad things happen to his family and he decides to take down the entire enterprise he's created i.e.. the chick assoc with the Germans and neo-nazi meth dealers that just edged into the game.

I have a surprisingly similar problem - except that mine is with the gate for my apartment complex.  I came home from running some errands yesterday, and the remote gate opener didn't work.  I got someone else to open the gate for me, so at least my car's off the street.  But if I have to go drive somewhere else then I might have some issues.  The manager said that she'll see about getting me a replacement tomorrow.

Like about 7 women died on the San Mateo Bridge for no other reason than the limo they were in caught on fire and the chaffeur had the locks in "child" mode, and when he noticed the fire he exited the vehicle (as any normal human would) BUT he did not let out his passengers, most of whom perished because of some stupid button that the chauffeur failed to deploy.

Of course, he could have deployed it and they still would have perished because electronic locks DON'T work when wet, or on fire, or (as in our particular cases) when corroded, aged, etc.

"Subject to" is more than just the US having a legal right to throw them into jail.   Rather than working from that starting point, we should examine actual subjects - permanent residents.   

Those go through a bunch of legal hoops and obey the laws - that is quantitatively different than a pregnant woman smuggling herself across the border.

Yes, yes, and yes.  If you can produce an example of a spy or saboteur claiming immunity from US law because they were a foreign national please do it. 

I can't think of a single instance of that happening that didn't involve diplomatic immunity.  That's why embassies are chock full of spies -- they CAN get diplomatic immunity using their official covers.  Those Nazi spies that landed on the east coast got packed away into prisons or executed straight away since they didn't have any official cover to protect them.

That's the whole point of keeping Gitmo open -- to warehouse them OUTSIDE where they'd be subject to Federal jurisdiction and all the mechanisms that would come into play.

CONUS housed POW were always subject to US law as well as various treaties.  Being a POW didn't grant you immunity to murder other POW's or camp guards.

I'm arguing the interpretation is wrong, because it did not actually pay attention to the consequences of the decisions, the priorities of US law and society, and what "makes sense".   

SCOTUS may have the final legal word on the Constitution; but that doesn't make their interpretation correct.  

In any case, we both agree on the desired result.   A Constitutional amendment would accomplish it without any controversy about how to interpret the 14th.    Good luck getting the wording precisely right.

Native Americans.  

From wiki on  the 14th amendment: 

"  During the original congressional debate over the amendment Senator Jacob M. Howard of Michigan—the author of the Citizenship Clause[39]—described the clause [...] that it excludes Native Americans who maintain their tribal ties and "persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers. [...]  The Supreme Court held that Native Americans who voluntarily quit their tribes did not automatically gain national citizenship." 

So "subject to" was understood at that time to not include all sorts of people born on US soil.   

That our current set of politicians interpret it in a different way right now does not make them correct, any more than the Assault Weapons Ban was a Constitutionally correct piece of legislation.   ("shall not be infringed")

Indian reservations aren't considered US soil.  They have their own internal governments, laws, and law enforcement agencies.   

Congressional debate and "intent" don't mean anything.  The words that got passed and how SCOTUS interprets them are all that matters.  Ever. 

I'm not happy that indians have this defacto special status of acting like citizens when it suits them (ex voting) and then acting like non-citizens when it suits them to do that.

You don't want to be on a reservation and run afoul of their laws.  There's been instances of drug running planes forced down on indian res runways here in FL due to mechanical issues.  The crew, plane and loads were never seen or heard from again.  FDLE and DEA just walk away in those cases.  the tribe dealt with it their own way.

505 Speaking of the slow start to the hurrican season,  I heard on the radio this morning that the normal number of tornadoes by this time in the US is around 1000,  but this year there have only been 600.

Indiana has so far only had 6 confirmed tornadoes in the entire state.

The reason is because we had a cool spring and summer,  without the extreme temperature changes we usually have.

Of course,  now it has turned hot so we still will be in danger when the next front moves through.

506   Congressional debate and "intent" don't mean anything. The words that got passed and how SCOTUS interprets them are all that matters. Ever.


This point would be meaningful if SCOTUS didn't change over time.   How SCOTUS interprets the Constitution shifts with each new justice.  

SCOTUS is quite willing to use "original intent" of laws when it suits them.    And make shit up out of whole cloth when it fancies them - even stuff that isn't even addressed by the letter of the Constitution.   

But hey, if SCOTUS creates new law with a horribly bad interpretation, I guess I can't think otherwise, since they're SCOTUS and my opinion doesn't matter.

507 I don't see any negative consquences to birthright citizenship in the form we've had since 1890. Up until the last 15 years we have understood that illegal aliens were going to be deported, and if they had US citizen children, the whole family was going away. Citizenship, custody, and residency are different attributes. A kid born on US soil is a citizen. Until he's 18 or emancipated, somebody else has custody, and he will have residency with that custodial parent like it or not. There is no legal reason to stop deporting illegal aliens and their US citizen minors. Just as your kids can't sue to stop you moving to your new job and making them switch schools. If you oppose the birthright citizenship, then what is now a fact of existence will become dependent on some federal agency making a decision. Nobody can be reckoned a full citizen until the federal government agrees their parents qualified. I don't trust them enough to grant them that power.

What is a British "subject"?    We've never had American "subjects", as we have no king, but "subject to" is related to the meaning of that word, which involves allegiance and loyalty.   It is more than being subject to penalty under law. 

That is why the ambassador is explicitly, by mutual agreement, not subject to the host country.   His purpose is to argue for the interests of his country, which would be compromised by being "loyal" to the guest country.  (though for the sake of diplomatic relations, he does abide by the guest country's laws to some extent)

You're constructing sentences that use one meaning of "subject to" and finding that those uses have one meaning - which of course match up to your original intended meanings.       

But "subject" does not have one single meaning.   Just a quick survey of dictionary definitions shows half a dozen, and which is being used depends on context.  All the more so in the legal realm, where words are narrowly defined for specific contexts.  

You'd call foul if I took the intended meaning behind your sentences and twisted them to mean something different.   I'm calling foul on taking the intended meaning of the 14th Amendment and twisting it into the perversion that it is today.   (That illegal alien children have equal voice in the fate of this nation as the children of US citizens)

The article doesn't say anything about the Supreme Court's authority in the Wong Kim Ark decision.   

An Attorney General, as an official in charge of executing the law, is a legal expert, and his interpretation of the law provides contextual information about what the 14th Amendment was understood to mean in the 1800s.   

An American minister to Denmark is not a Danish minister (which indicates a foreign gov't official with no business commenting on the application of US law).   Furthermore, what is of interest is that his opinion was accepted without controversy by then Secretary of State back when the 14th Amendment was ratified. 

Those are very solid examples that show off the "lawmaker intent" behind the language of the 14th Amendment.   Mine is not a kooky 21st Century invention, but has roots in American legal tradition.  


Under the flawed notion of "subject to the jurisdiction", none of those men could have given birth to natural born US citizens.

The article examined several historical examples of foreign nationals becoming US citizens by first renouncing their prior allegiance to foreign states and claimed it was the common practice throughout the US.    You don't understand the arguments of "subject to jurisdiction" advocates if you ignore that.  

The US was outraged over impressment because the men in question had renounced their allegiance to the British Crown and given it to the US - these men did not hold allegiance to both countries simultaneously.  

Contrast that with illegal aliens, who do not declare allegiance to the US, and by their unlawful behavior rebel against US law and society.    Their main interest in being in the US is to take what they can from the corrupt welfare system.  

We will not have a nation of laws if we say that the criminal must have equal voice to the law abiding citizen.

The British Ambassador is not subject to our jurisdiction, and cannot be arrested and tried in our courts without his government's permission; his children born here are not natural-born citizens. In the era when reservation Indians were not citizens by birth of the United States, they were unable to sue US citizens in US courts. Illegal aliens are answerable to American law. Dual citizens have competing allegiances.  It's not an invention on my part - it's the very nature of claiming two countries as one's own.   

Everyone on earth does citizenship by blood; the children of two US citizens are US citizens; just as the children of <insert country> citizens are citizens of their parents country.  So the children of illegal aliens, by the fact that their parents are foreign citizens, hold dual citzenship.     


Their claim to American citizenship is murky - you're ignoring the article's historical evidence because it destroys your counter claim that my understanding is made up. 


Your belief that deporting minor US "citizens" is no trouble is short-sighted.    How about when the minor returns the US as an adult with no knowledge of US culture or tradition, with loyalty to the place they were raised in?   Full voting rights and political power as a person who grew up in the US, or the naturalized citizen who swears allegiance to this country?   

Are the children of deported minors going to be US citizens?   Even if the parent spent their entire life outside of the US?   

Granted, your solution is still better than our current status quo.     But I don't like that it still dilutes American citizenship.

Except it wasn't, because the states did not recognize them as deserving citizenship in accordance with the states' authority to choose who is a citizen, and the states' interest in only granting citizenship (political power) to those who demonstrated commitment to their society.  (ex:  by not having allegiances to foreign nations)  

The UK's claim to allegiance was contested because those individuals had renounced it and sworn allegiance to the US, as an active choice.    It involved people who were born in the UK; who had switched allegiances.   If you bothered to read the article more carefully, these were "naturalized citizens" (or in the process of becoming such) and their children naturally gained the same citizenship.  


You are maintaining the citizenship status of people born in the United States, AND who declare themselves US citizens, is revocable. There's no historical basis to ignore the place of birth AND an adult declaration.

No.   I am saying that the children of illegal aliens do not qualify for citizenship under the (properly understood) language of the 14th Amendment.   I recognize this is not how things are currently being done.  Whether they declare themselves to be US citizens is also not clear, but it is clearly unjust to grant them citizenship as a reward for their family's lawbreaking while legal immigrants respect US law, wait in line and are rejected for residence and citizenship.  

I have made no comments at all at what should happen to people who have been granted US citizenship certificates for being born here even though they do not really qualify under the law.   There is no easy solution there, but I am not arguing for a solution, I am arguing to define the problem - misapplication of our nation's laws for citizenship, which shifts us away from being a republic and a nation of laws.

No, that's my whole position - the 14th amendment does not grant citizenship to these illegal alien children because its citizenship is conditional on being subject to jurisdiction, which in context involves declaring allegiance; the illegal alien by reject US laws has not given allegiance to the US.   

As far as what you're talking about, many of these "wrongly issued" citizenships have been given out for many years; I think it's too disruptive and impractical to take them back. 

But the first step is to correctly apply the law now by not giving out citizenship to birth tourists and whatnot.   That is wishful thinking on my part - but that does not make it less correct or desirable.

517 You do hit a good point - those who want to be a US citizen should be able to do so.  

Though we also need to kill the welfare state so that it's not borne out of a desire for unearned financial gain.
