The Surprisingly Young Ages of the Founding Fathers in 1776

Well revolutions are pretty much a young man's game.

Andrew Jackson, 9  (possibly the youngest fighter in the revolution, certainly the youngest POW)
Marquis de Lafayette, 18
James Monroe, 18
John Marshall, 20
Gilbert Stuart, 20
Aaron Burr, 20
Alexander Hamilton, 21
Nathan Hale, 21
Betsy Ross, 24
James Madison, 25

And then you had the 'old men' of the war:
Thomas Jefferson, 33
Nathanael Greene, 33
John Penn, 35
Ethan Allen, 38
John Adams, 40
Paul Revere, 41
George Washington, 44
Samuel Adams, 53
Benjamin Franklin, 70

The oldest prominent participant in the Revolution, by a wide margin, was Benjamin Franklin, who was 70 years old on July 4, 1776. Franklin was a full two generations removed from the likes of Madison and Hamilton. But the oldest participant in the war was Samuel Whittemore, who fought in an early skirmish at the age of 80:
On April 19, 1775, British forces were returning to Boston from the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the opening engagements of the war. On their march they were continually shot at by colonial militiamen.

Whittemore was in his fields when he spotted an approaching British relief brigade under Earl Percy, sent to assist the retreat. Whittemore loaded his musket and ambushed the British Grenadiers of the 47th Regiment of Foot from behind a nearby stone wall, killing one soldier. He then drew his dueling pistols and killed a grenadier and mortally wounded a second. By the time Whittemore had fired his third shot, a British detachment reached his position; Whittemore drew his sword and attacked.[3] He was shot in the face, bayoneted thirteen times, and left for dead in a pool of blood. He was found alive, trying to load his musket to fight again. He was taken to Dr. Cotton Tufts of Medford, who perceived no hope for his survival. However, Whittemore lived another 18 years until dying of natural causes at the age of 98.

Meanwhile you have today's Democratic Party of 'Youth':

Let's look at our two top Democrat contenders for 2016, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. Hillary (born in 1947) represents the party's youth wing and Biden (born in 1942) represents the party's ability to stick hair plugs and dentures on a learning-disabled sea urchin and address it as "Mr. Vice President."

Take the ages both will be in 2016 and add them together, and the result is 143.

Which Country Has the Most Stable Government in Modern History?

I was listening to another podcast by Russ Roberts in which the guest made a very interesting point. I'll put his point in the form of a quiz question: what country's government has survived without a regime change caused by violence longer than any other?

Answer below the fold.

Sometimes the TSA Will Do You a Solid

So when it came time to chuck my magazines in the bag, instead of unloading the remaining ammo into the manufacturer's cardboard boxes (like the guidelines for traveling with firearms say to), I just threw them into the bag. Even then it should still be OK, so long as the ammunition was completely enclosed in the magazine. Except mine weren't.

When it came time for the TSA to screen my bags for the flight out of Redmond (RDM) they found the magazines, sans covers. At that point, they could have easily chucked the mags and left a love note, or just dumped all the ammo into the skip. Instead, someone took the time to fashion some covers for my magazines out of the TSA inspection leaflets and some tape.

My laziness could have led to a serious shortage of magazines on my end, only days before I need to ship out to the Pro/Am in Kentucky, but the TSA went out of their way to do me a solid.

Talking On the Phone While Driving Not So Dangerous After All

"New research which takes advantage of the increase in cell phone use after 9pm due to the popularity of 'free nights and weekends' plans showed no corresponding increase in crash rates (PDF). Additionally, the researchers analyzed the effects of legislation banning cellphone use, enacted in several states, and similarly found that the legislation had no effect on the crash rate. 'One thought is that drivers may compensate for the distraction of cellphone use by selectively deciding when to make a call or consciously driving more carefully during a call.' Score this a -1 for common sense."

Does Spontaneous Human Combustion Exist?

Well I've always suspected that it does but there's never been a scientifically documented case of it happening. But this baby may be the first clue as to whether it really does exist and what the cause is since he's already caught fire 4 times

Currently the leading theory is that it's due to acetone-infused body fat:

British research biologist Brian J. Ford has shed new light on the mystery. In two recent articles, one of which appeared in the New Scientist, Professor Ford explains that spontaneous human combustion may be caused by a chemical called acetone that is produced naturally in the body.

Furthermore, acetone infuses itself well into human fat. And - this is crucial - it is also  extremely flammable.

...Unable to find a human volunteer to test his theory that a build-up of acetone causes spontaneous human combustion, Professor Ford made a scale model, as it were, from pieces of pork - the animal flesh that most closely approximates ours.

The 'pork puppet' was marinated in acetone, dressed in clothes, and placed in a chair. Professor Ford then held up a gas lighter, and the result was dramatic. The 'body' burst into a fireball, and in under an hour, it had been completely consumed by flames.

In fact, the acetone was so volatile, that even just a static spark from synthetic fabrics could have caused the conflagration.

11 Copied from the last thread: Hi Peaches!!! &&&&&& (Heh.) Well, my teenage nephew will be moving from deepest darkest Africa to live with me next year. I need to become his legal guardian so I can add him onto my insurance and claim him on my taxes. I looked into legal guardianship in PA, but the only info I found made it appear that his mom would have to be declared unable to care for him. But that's not the case. He's a citizen and my family decided it's best he moves over here, but my sis lives in ddAfrica (they're both visiting currently). I'm wondering if there's a way for her to just assign me as his legal guardian without her having to be declared incompetent? Thanks, much!

23 Panhandler story!

Back when I was working in Denver, I used to take the bus to and from work. (I may have mentioned this.) That meant that I had to wait around at bus stations. And I got approached by the sort of people who approach strangers at bus stations.

One such gentleman who approached me was of a subcontinental Asian look. He asked me if I was Christian. I said that I was. (Culturally only, I didn't add.) Then he launched into his "pitch". He was from Pakistan, and his bishop blah blah blah, can I have a few bucks?

I am reminded of that line of grift when I read this: http://tinyurl.com/m43guxt. I got that from Drudge.

What is pinging my grift-o-meter on this one? Well, first, the narrative is a lot like the narrative of other tried-and-true Christian martyrologies, of which I have studied plenty. Second the narrator reports that her Muslim oppressors told her that Jesus was a bastard. It is in fact STRONGLY discouraged in Islam to insult the prophet Jesus and his ancestry; Jesus was created by God in Mary's womb and is in effect another Adam. [suras 3 and 19.] The Virgin Mary is the only woman mentioned by name in that book! no good Muslim would insult her. And lastly there's this: Her new memoir, “Blasphemy,” was dictated to her husband from jail, who relayed it to French journalist Anne-Isabelle Tollet. Fifty percent of the proceeds the book will go to support Bibi and her family. So you listen to the tale of woe and you shell out your cash.

Yeah, well, I won't. Not to someone I don't know very well.

Jeez, Chique, I have no idea whatsoever . . . I don't work for or even hang out with the kind of lawyers who would know.  You might want to check with a family law or immigration law kind of person.  I'm sure you don't need this advice, but if you have not already done so, I would do a search for local pro bono types.  There are a lot of them, law schools having graduated about a brazilian more lawyers than even our current society actually needs or will support.

A major side effect of the increasing credentialism of our society is that it requires greater and greater commitments of time to achieve.  This is not an accident.  If you keep twenty-somethings in school and in debt struggling to get a piece of paper in the vain hope that it might land them a job, then they aren't in any position to challenge to dominant powers.

The left's commitment to the idea that "everyone should go to college" isn't simply faulty economics, it's a means of ensuring their own power.

Friend's wife does it:

outside of property lines (and even those can be iffy), a lot property records are screwed up.

As for satellite images, your talking about a ton of houses crammed into a very short auction window that it makes it almost impossible to keep up, and that doesn't take into account in how old the satellite image is.

You forgot "kickass" and "bank-hating"....which helps to mitigate the other. Oh, and pretty damned smart, too -- http://www.bartleby.com/124/pres24.html: "... that the destruction of our State governments or the annihilation of their control over the local concerns of the people would lead directly to revolution and anarchy, and finally to despotism and military domination. In proportion, therefore, as the General Government encroaches upon the rights of the States, in the same proportion does it impair its own power and detract from its ability to fulfill the purposes of its creation." 186 Everyone understands that dropping bombs on a country is an act of war, right?
So Obama's going to drop bombs because he said chemical weapons were a red line that must not be crossed, and Syria crossed it. So Obama drops bombs, walks away with mission accomplished, and Syria then has the right to retaliate; any US person, any US territory, any US aircraft, any US naval vessel or maritime vessel becomes a target.

Meanwhile, Obama goes back to golf and domestic politics.

I think the "surprises" in such buying are more often of the sort of finding that someone has helpfully removed all of the copper piping from the house.

There was a comment about meth manufacture upthread. THAT can give a home buyer an even more serious wake-up call.

Here in Commiefornia, meth tweakers will rent a house -- typically a nice postwar suburban rancher on a quiet cul-de-sac -- and set up a lab in the place. By the time they're done, the house is a hazmat site. Red-tagged, unfit to be re-rented or re-occupied. The only people who can go inside are remediation professionals in moonsuits and respirators. The hapless owner has to pay to have the entire house disassembled and carted off to a special landfill.

I think I'll stick to buying houses which I can properly and meticulously inspect ahead of time, thanks.

The testers show up, take the test, and that's it. If you don't show up, that goes as a failure. As for TMZ, as long as they say "insiders" or "those close to Lamar", they have a shield because then they can say that they were given bad info if not true and print a retraction. They are just reporting what others are whispering. Plus Lamar is a public figure, it would have to be a bold lie by TMZ for it to be libel.

Fire slowly burns the body. Melted fat drips down into the chair. the springs and fabric act like a candle-wick and keeps the burning going until all of the body above the chair seat is consumed. Feet and the lower part of the legs are usually left behind. The room never gets hot enough to "flash-over". If it did, then they would just call it a FIRE.

The consideration is bond strength. Liquid Nails might work, but the cure time is long. There is always one of the fast-polymerizing epoxies, but even that will take a while..., unless you go nutty and use UV curing. I would try various cyanoacrylates (super glue) to see if you can find one that is satisfactory. There are epoxies that cure in 3-5 minutes.

Not only that... but he will NOT get UN Security council cover, as Russia will veto...

UN charter says you cannot get involved in an Internal Insurrection, of a Member State, without that member States permission.... only way past that is with a UN Security council resolution...

The UN Mandate was a treaty signed by a President, then ratified by Congress, thus having the Force of US law.

NATO treaty only comes into play if a NATO country has been attacked... which has not happened.

I doubt Congress will give him cover.... and the War Powers Act does not come into play unless either US Personnel or Territory is attacked (which is not the case).

Obama has no International, or US Legal cover for this illegal bombing.  He can order it BUT can be held accountable IF Congress, or the Courts, have any courage... (which I know they don't).

Bombing Syria will be an Act of War... precipitated by an out of control Imperial Presidency.

I recall someone who had sealed up used soda cans and joined them together to form a raft using overlapping rubber bands. You need to find the right size to bind two cans together without crushing. 270 JB Weld. Available at Home Depot.

Mix a small amount, on a piece of cardboard box with a wooden mizer (tongue depressor), scrape it into a pile, then dip out small amounts and apply it to the local areas ... then wait for it to set.

Repeat, with another assembly.

The "small amount" prevents a lot of wastage.

Pay attention to the "working time" and "setting time" listed on the package.

Posted by: Arbalest at August 26, 2013 11:53 PM (FlRtG)

JB Weld is strong, but takes several hours to set and develop full strength. For the OP's project, cladding a model Eiffel Tower in beer cans, I'd suggest a hot glue gun. Joints are weaker, but will stand handling inside of a minute.

324 Whittemore was one serious badass. Born in Britain, fought against the French in the colonies as a Brit at the age of 54, then fought 'em again as a colonist at the age of 64, then fought the Brits as a colonist in 1775 at the age of 80.

Note to self -- commercial application of time travel.....someone walks up to 83-year-old Whittemore in 1778 and says, "Cthulhu sends you a pint from 2023." while a button on a nearby jacket glints by the light of the lanterns....

The second slide is interesting. The hard drive is connected by SATA-2 according to the label. This is a little surprising but it saves some cost and SATA-3 isn't really needed for low end 2.5" drive. Still, one dreams of a hot rod optional SSD replacement for the hard drive. This makes me wonder how the hard drive on the PS4 is connected since that one is replaceable, continuing the policy on the PS3.

What also caught my eye was the 8 GB of flash memory. Since this is presumably solely for system use to store the firmware, and a console doesn't need to have huge gobs of the material found in a desktop OS install, that looks like a pretty healthy amount of space. I find myself wondering how much of it is used in the launch version of the firmware and how much is left for the future. Both machines have a good chunk of RAM and CPU reserved for the system and both have admitted this is a good deal more than they actually need initially but they don't want to be starved for resources when some new add-on device or something needs it a few years from now.

Seriously, Gingy -- and I'm allergic to a bunch o' stuff -- (1) Doff everything, and make sure it isn't in the same room with you. (2) Cool shower to get irritants away. It may be gross, but blowing your nose and hawking up spit is probably not the worst idea here. (3) Hot, steamy shower to get irritants out of your pores. (4) Cool shower to get everything bumped out by step 3 sloughed away from your body. (5) Reassess (seriously, 90% of my contact/inhaled allergy problems resolve by this point). and (6) Pseudonephedrine or Benadryl.

361 331 Mike Hammer:  Damn, man, where the heck were you able to find all that information about your great grandfather (whose service, despite my birth in Arkansas and quips about the War of Northern Aggression, I truly honor)????

Very true what you say about disease v. battle deaths.  This website:  http://www.civilwarhome.com/casualties.htm, says this about that:

The Price in Blood!
Casualties in the Civil War

At least 618,000 Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the toll reached 700,000. The number that is most often quoted is 620,000. At any rate, these casualties exceed the nation's loss in all its other wars, from the Revolution through Vietnam.

The Union armies had from 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men. Their losses, by the best estimates:

Battle deaths: 110,070 Disease, etc.: 250,152 Total 360,222

The Confederate strength, known less accurately because of missing records, was from 750,000 to 1,250,000. Its estimated losses:

Battle deaths: 94,000 Disease, etc.: 164,000 Total 258,000
The South wound up losing over 24 percent of men between 18 and 24, and that is killed, not killed and wounded. That's how you win a war.

Krustyland is a bit annoying in that it has a separate economy but requires taking away characters from your Springfield to perform tasks there. If Homer is earning tickets in Krustyland he can't put in a shift at the nuclear power plant back home.

I've no doubt a certain number of car accidents in the last twenty years can be attributed to fools giving too much attention to a cell phone. But I do doubt that this is addition to the reasons those same fools were having accidents before. Just another brick in the wall.

When did the first battery powered shaver come to market? I bet the first car accident involving an idiot trying to shave while driving happened less than a year later.

The BH is setting-up a tech support/customer service group in NC. Due to a bit of falling-through-the-cracks, one of her new-hires didn't get training with the group in NC when the trainer was out there for a month....so had to come to California for training. Turns out, she (a) doesn't have a credit card and (b) has never been on a plane.

The first flight in her life gets bumped from Piedmont->Atlanta->SFO to Piedmont->DETROIT!!!->SFO because the stupid plane was late. Corporate scheduled her to fly in Sunday evening, work Monday-Friday, and fly out Saturday morning, jetlag be damned. So the BH gets into "fairy godmother mode" and tweaks the schedule -- result, they get off work at 2:00 Friday....and then we all head to San Francisco where the new-hire gets her first subway ride, first boat ride, a walk through Chinatown, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, the Musee Mechanique, dinner, and her first Cable Car ride, getting back to her hotel at midnight for an early-morning flight.

I'm thinking that her overall impression of the trip won't be "pain in the ass punctuated by TSA gropes." I'm pretty sure that "work hard, play hard" is gonna stick.

395 Something that really pissed me off. I ordered a PCIe USB 3.0 host adapter from Newegg entirely because of the price after rebate, figuring it would be a handy thing to have around. The day I ordered it was the last day of the rebate and I must have looked at some other stuff before finalizing the order or some other delay. The rebate was rejected because it was outside the dates of the offer... by 37 minutes.

I sure hope it isn't that bad. I'm hoping more like, "she's a great success doing tech support/customer service for the BH's company in NC; any time her coworkers go off on some bullshit management/worker thing, she tells 'em they might be better off applying themselves to the business need than  kvetching; she advances in her career to where business travel is needed more often, but can artfully blend some enjoyment into the horrible drudgery; increased responsibilities result in increased compensation, to the point where she can travel for leisure....

She seemed like a good kid. I'd rather her story was about her achieving her full potential than about two old farts showing her a good time.

Posted by: cthulhu at August 26, 2013 11:26 PM (T1005)

403 Isn't a cab kind of expensive for that sort? Is there no bus service in the area? I'm guessing here but most of the "in-town" (ie not going to or from the Airport) cabbie activity that I have seen in a less than major Metropolis with "some" Bus Service seems to revolve around grocery stores in predominantly Section 8 neighborhoods and downtown government offices. (Shit! I would have taken a cab to downtown for jury duty and saved myself the hassle & expense of Public Parking but for the fact that I would have had to wait on some street corner for 45min. after I was dismissed to get a ride home. My downtown is ONLY government buildings, lawers, citizens on Jury Duty, and smelly hobos. I wouldn't prowl there if I had to make my nut for my livery licence!) It must make "some" sort of economic sense to hire a cab once a week to haul your groceries home rather than pay for a bus trip both ways to "shop for the freshest ingredients an a daily basis, like the Europeans do" and carry them home in 2 hemp woven bags imprinted with Emmerson quotes. As to carrying 4 kids along with you? I have no idea. If I were on a super-tight budget and bulk shopping so as to need a car to haul my stuff home, LAST thing I would want were a bunch of little kids grab-assing around in the Cereal Aisle of Food City. I would beg my neighbors or any family members to watch the adorable little so & so's for an hour or two.

So, the BH is from NYC, and I'm from LA, so I defer to her for the whole cab thingie.....but we had grave difficulties hailing cabs during our peregrination -- and we had one cabbie that was so bad that I was actually worrying about what we should do if he got in a fender-bender.

When I was at XXX, as sort of a Controller/COO of a 50-person telecom manufacturing company, we got this receptionist through an agency. Her ex found out about her pending economic independence and threatened to come down and shoot up the place, and the agency asked if we wanted a replacement. I said, "absolutely not" and arranged for phones to be routed to a nondescript other office in our building.....

After the ex gave up, we ended up training her to do accounts payable, and after that some general accounting. After a couple of years, she went off to the Sierras, where she became the office manager for a company that did widgets similar to golf carts. A year later, she was the "go-to person" for the company and "holding the fort" while the owner left town, and she invited me to her wedding.

You can't know how proud I am that I once had a receptionist that other people would have fired.....who (last I checked) practically runs a company, while using things that I taught her nearly every day.

Another "canned spiel" is talking about priorities. If you say that your job is your top priority, you're a sick bastard unworthy of trust. If I had to guess, your health should be #1 -- 'cause you can't be anything but a burden to others if your health is torqued. Your family should absolutely be in the top 3. Your good name should be in the top 5. If you have a spouse and kids, your dance-card is probably filled to 6th place by now. Your career should weigh in as more important than any job......but I'd like to see this job somewhere in your top-ten.

431 You can't know how proud I am that I once had a receptionist that other people would have fired.....who (last I checked) practically runs a company, while using things that I taught her nearly every day. Uhhhm... Yeah, a co-worker of mine when I was working at a Hotel and marking time and making money until I could go off to the college of my 2nd choice asked me to be a god-mother, 20 years ago. She was/is an incredibly smart and attractive(fashion model)product of Chicago's South-Side black community. She taught me a lot and I taught her maybe 3 things at the wise old age of 19. She went through a very difficult pregnancy and delivered her baby way up in the NW of Chicago far away from "her people". I initially demurred from being a godmother mostly on the grounds that I was not a believing Christian and also that I wasn't sure that any baby named "Titanium" could be baptized! "Her name is Tatiannam!", scratched a mom who was just wrecked by the birth of her little girl after 3 mo. in the hospital. Okay, sure. Little baby Titanium! Whatever you say momma, you just get better! 'Cause I'm sensitive like that and like to crack up people with new stitches. -------------- Well, 20 years later on... "Little Baby Titanium" is going to the University of Chicago and counts Thomas Sowell & Milton Friedman as her intellectual heroes just 10 years after I have ever paid attention. Ms. Cassandra is a General Manager of a significant property for a major Hotel Chain. I taught her how to figure out percentages and how to discount with just a calculator, pen & paper when the computers shut down. She was losing any patience she might have had for loose shit & so was I. What a strange, lovely, friendship. Neither of us gets back to Chicago as much as we would like and our career and family paths are so radically different but still... (Did I mention that she was preturnaturally beautiful? Looked her up on a Corporate Web-Site. Still is.)

(Average age, 76) Don't know that it makes any $$ but it sure does fuck-up, day to day operations (so far as I can tell) in the back room. That might be a good business, though. You get to the store & make your purchases and I will cart you and your produce and 1 other person directly home for... $$$? What kind of Livery Licence would I have to purchace? What kind of Vans? What kind of insurance? How many? I know EXACTLY 18-26 locations where this would make perfect sense in my town if I could do it cheaper than the cabbies. 446 lays a lot on definitions of career, job, and personal situations open to question. Not really, I don't think. I mean, I pretend to be more ignorant of the state of Medicare and MediCaid than the average person but I worked for an old-timey Insurance Company, right out of college and my specialty was LTC. (So, Ezra Klein & his ilk can COMPLETELY fuck off. You were 12 when I was 32, faggits!) My boss & (Texas Woman, Tyler, I think) mentor had a long string of tragedies and she ended up working for the AARP in Phoenix. That's terrible. She told me against the AARP from my first day on the job.

447 Thanks for the many ideas on beer can attaching. The various JB Weld products sound extremely promising, and the rubber bands great for the narrow upper stages that bear little weight. Duct tape is always brilliant. Merovign's forum post by the guy apparently building an airplane skin with sheet metal shingles and glue kind of terrifies me, in a good way. I'm looking now for a hot glue gun that doesn't require 120v AC. Generators are banned in the campground. I'm not above outright fraud, so if we build some sturdy framing modules in the at-home rehearsal, I'm willing to smuggle them into the campsite and have them magically appear overnight. A housemate observes that the cans are to be assembled mouth-down so 100 pounds of empties don't become a half-ton collection of rain water. I like diverting the finest minds of a generation for important projects like this. If Hitler had only built his own Eiffel Tower instead of coveting the one in Paris, imagine how much evil nervous energy could have been dissipated. I've set a design goal of 100 pounds (2800 cans). At school this fall, that's three Saturday nights' donations from friendly frats in a two-block radius. At the festival next August, Thursday night's yield from 5,000 campers should do the trick. The 12-foot spire assembles first, then is lifted and secured to the second platform stage as it's completed. Four sturdy legs are built separately, attached to the first platform, then the 60 pounds of stages one and two will require careful heavy lifting. My plan is to Tom Sawyer our can contributors into making subassemblies so our 20-foot tower can rise overnight and stand over a sea of tents for three full days before its funeral at the recycling dumpster. Will report as tests begin. Sadly, classes have begun, so the project will start very slowly.

449 I don't get it. Dead men beaming? Uhm, Red Shirts? Every guy who wears a Red Shirt (tunic) and "beams down" with Capt. Kirk (Shatner) to a new planet, always dies.

450 Alexander Hamilton was born in 1757 and was 19 in 1776. Historians confuse his birth year with that of his older brother.

451 Mr. Whittemore should be put in for the Medal of Honor. Unfortunately there is no one alive from his "Chain of Command" (as if he actually had one) to submit the paperwork. Maybe I should write my congresscritter - - -

452 Greetings: That photo looks more like a B-29 than a B-17 to me.
