The Most Important Life Lesson Older People Want Younger Ones to Know
Do not spend your life in a job you hate.
You know those nightmares where you are shouting a warning but no sound comes out? Well, that's the intensity with which the experts wanted to tell younger people that spending years in a job you dislike is a recipe for regret and a tragic mistake. There was no issue about which the experts were more adamant and forceful. Over and over they prefaced their comments with, "If there's one thing I want your readers to know it's . . ." From the vantage point of looking back over long experience, wasting around two thousand hours of irretrievable lifetime each year is pure idiocy.
Fringe Politics Isn't Really About Politics
Even if the people on the fringe obsess on politics and politicians.
Because their motives were basically psychological rather than political, the anti-Bush moonbats have kept up their radical craziness long after the original grievance has passed. The U.S. has pulled out of Iraq and is withdrawing from Afghanistan, but the radicals have not been placated by the policy changes they demanded, because policy changes are not really what radicals seek. Rather, the radical desires to destroy the society from which he is alienated.
...Why have fringe kooks like this - who raged against Bush when all the cool kids were doing it - not been placated by Obama's policies? For the same reason that Oswald, who embraced Marxism during the Eisenhower era, was not placated by John F. Kennedy's liberalism: It's not really about politics for these kooks.
It is wrong to dismiss these kooks as irrelevant to mainstream politics, because the mainstream influences the kooks even while the kooks influence the mainstream.
Unfortunately just because they're acting mostly out of their own internal psych issues rather than policy or ideology doesn't mean that they still don't have a powerful political influence. Like the strength of the retard the power of the kook shouldn't be underestimated.
Feminism's High Water Mark....Was a Lie?
On Thursday night, Sept. 20, 1973, 50 million Americans, fatigued by Vietnam and Watergate, tuned in to see whether a woman could defeat a man on a tennis court. Dubbed "The Battle of the Sexes," the match pitted Billie Jean King, the 29-year-old champion of that summer's Wimbledon and a crusader for the women's liberation movement, against Bobby Riggs, the 55-year-old gambler, hustler and long-ago tennis champ who had willingly become America's bespectacled caricature of male chauvinism.
... If she were to defeat Bobby Riggs, the triumph would be shared by every woman who knew she deserved equal pay, opportunities and respect. Equally sweet, King would cram shut the mouth of a male chauvinist clown who had chortled that a woman belonged in the bedroom and the kitchen but certainly not in the same arena competing against a man. For Riggs, the $100,000 winner-take-all match offered big money and a perfect launching pad to a late-in-life career playing exhibition matches against women.
King defeated Riggs in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 shocking many watchers. But was the match all just a Mob-created betting scam?
A Devastating Affirmative-Action Failure
This article has probably already appeared somewhere on the blog but if you haven't read it yet now would be a good time.
But the Times story conveys a subtler point as well: Racial preferences are not just ill advised, they are positively sadistic. Only the preening self-regard of University of California administrators and faculty is served by such an admissions travesty. Preference practitioners are willing to set their "beneficiaries" up to fail and to subject them to possible emotional distress, simply so that the preference dispensers can look out upon their "diverse" realm and know that they are morally superior to the rest of society.
Back in my teaching and tutoring days I met more than a few Kashawns (and their José counterparts). Not only was their time, money, and effort wasted at a university they weren't prepared for but afterwards they were left damaged by the completely unnecessary personal defeat of flunking out of college. Only the diversity bean counters came out ahead on the deal.
Will the Pottery Barn Rule Save Assad?
It can be simultaneously true that the narrowly defined mission in Libya succeeded and that what followed was disastrous. The reason it elicits comparisons to Iraq is because of Colin Powell's famous "Pottery Barn rule" regarding foreign intervention: "You break it, you own it."
...The Pottery Barn rule is why Iraq looms over the various humanitarian disasters created by the Arab Spring, tempting American intervention. And the "bad things that have happened since" Gaddafi's toppling are why Libya is being raised as a cautionary tale for intervention in Syria.
Bah - I've never bought into the Pottery Barn rule. The fact that we even have the term 'punitive raid' is evidence that you can break it and not pick up the pieces. The world is not a mall and there are a lot of places that need more breakin' and less ownin'.
And Everybody Was Crazy and Stupid Right Up Until Just A Few Years Ago
You know, we've all read history. Everybody, you know, world history, and weren't all past ages maaaad? There were slaves, there were kings-I don't think there's a single student who reads the history of England and doesn't say that that was crazy. You know "that's wonderful, you gotta know history, and be open to things and so on," but they're not open to those things because they know that that was crazy. I mean, the latest transformation of history is as a history of the enslavement of women, which means to say that is was all crazy-up till now.
And We Call This Thing a "Restaurant"
China is increasing its pressure on the Philippines to remove small detachments of sailors and marines stationed on nine islets and reefs in the Spratly Islands. In particular, the Chinese want the detachment stationed on a World War II era landing ship (the BRP Sierra Madre) removed. The Filipino navy deliberately grounded the LST on Second Thomas Reef in 1999, to provide a place for an observation team. Chinese patrol ships have recently come within nine kilometers of the LST, which China insists is there illegally. The Philippines warns China that it will resist any attempts to use force against the grounded ship. In response China is building more buildings (on stilts) on nearby Mischief Reef (which is only 126 kilometers from the Philippines' Palawan Island). Second Thomas Reef and nearby Reed Bank are 148 kilometers west of the Philippines (Palawan Island) and well within the Philippines's EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone). Although the EEZ is recognized by international law (and a treaty that China signed and uses to defend waters off its own coast) China says that does not apply here because all the islets in the South China Sea belong to China and there is no room for negotiation on that point.

These days, Leatherman is a synonym for any dozen-in-one dream tool you can fit in a pocket. The idea came to Tim Leatherman back in the 1970s, when the recent mechanical engineering grad and his wife Chau decided touring Europe in a questionable Fiat would be a good use of a year. Leatherman found himself regularly eyeballing the guts of the car, wishing for one tool he didn't have in his Swiss Army Knife: pliers.
...After partnering with a friend with a machine shop, he pitched the first Leatherman multi-tool to knife and tool companies to resounding disinterest... until Cabela's unexpectedly ordered 200 for their mail-order catalog. They featured it on their back cover and ordered 500 more before the first order was filled. With that, the Leatherman snowball was off and rolling.

That's crappy advice. The relevant question is how much does it pay? A good paycheck can make a lousy job tolerable, and perhaps even enjoyable.

I am an "older people" and this is complete fuckin' horseshit. Job hate is the norm, and the more you make, the more you hate it. The only advice I ever give young people is, start saving now, just a little, just do it, you'll be very pleased when it starts looking like real money.
I want all young people to stay in their jobs because who the fuck else is gonna cover that social security bullshit that I need because I did not know about the whole "save a little money once in a while" thingy.

People are different. That has not been my experience. Instead, I found myself spending the extra money on stuff I hoped would ease my annoyance, but which did not.
But if were giving advice to young people, after I had made sure they were not on my lawn, I would tell them "never leave a job until you have the next one secured."

All work is time out of your life, that you are trading for money, time that you will never get back.
It helps if you like it, but it is not necessary.
As long as you can be happy doing it, you are good to go.
And
At times I have taken jobs, assignments, consultation, etc. in which I may have almost immediately regretted it.
BUT
At that time I remind myself, I accepted this job, this gig, etc. I said yes.

Eh, that's nothing.
I had a law school teacher who was convinced she was a Narrative Feminist because "stories matter" or some shit.
We had an actual narrative ethicist, an old school classic liberal feminist, and me the contrarian conservative all in that class (as well a post-modern Unitarian, but let's forget him for a second.)
We pointed out the obvious problems with a) what she was doing wasn't Feminism, b) it really wasn't narrative either, because the narratives were all tilted specifically to make a point (i.e. they were emotivististic abuse of narrative) and c) she didn't even properly understand the stories she thought she was using to teach (that is, she had them factually wrong, and even when she was right factually drew obviously wrong conclusions.)
Oh and for my part "you're stupid and don't even understand the laws and regulations you purport to teach."
Shockingly, we got A's and B's. But were glad to be done with that shit.

On those top-speed runs all alone, the usual thing that goes wrong is an imbalance in the rolling frame. Those who study such things call it a "change of moment." I had a book bag bungied on the back, probably weighed 15 pounds. At 125 that little odd weight induced a lock-to-lock tank-slapper, from which I recovered and did not do that thing again the same way.
At high speed, you don't have to add power or twitch the forks to get wobbly. There is a lot of gyroscopic action in the wheels, but just changing the riding position a little can induce a vibration wave that brings the track of the two wheels out of square. The lighter and better-balanced the bike, the more likely this is to occur. When it does, it's like dealing with a blowout: you must immediately understand that it is going on, but must not do anything sudden. It's quite a skill to acquire, since practicing for it is dangerous. Many don't survive.

I just mentioned on twitter. the notion of "assent" when "consent" is not an option was, in retrospect, the worst thing we ever arrived at.
I like it, I really do, it makes a base level of sense, but clearly we've expanded it far beyond anything it ever was meant for.

Regarding work, unless there is something unethical or illegal going on, or you get a better offer, stick out a job for at least three years. It helps if you avoid any large amounts of debt or large expenses. Living in a smaller apartment and paying less rent means that you can save money for when necessary, and that you have to be less worried about finding a "lifeboat" job that pays well enough.

Heh, my Phil Methods teacher called it "utilizing the coercive power of the government."
Which doesn't sound all that bad, except he had a very narrow definition of "coercive" that is "requiring the threat of violence."
So Taxation is violence

Now that I've hit my mid-40's and trying to get something resembling a photography studio going, I'm not sure how much longer I can handle the weekend bar crowds. And, since we've brought in a younger, more attractive (i.e., female) bartender, it might be a good idea if I start preparing to move on. I'm starting to get a little cantankerous already, and my blood pressure isn't the best as it is.
It sucks getting old. It sucks even more getting old without a job that has decent benefits. So, I figure my choices are to keep tending bar and hope I die at work, start working for myself and hope it pans out, or join a trade union and have to do actual hard work outside in the elements until I gain enough seniority to sit in a truck and/or office trailer all day.
What a d-r-a-a-a-a-g it is getting o-o-o-o-o-o-l-d.

A non-contemporaneous account (40 years after the alleged event, that's right 40)
Said non-contemporaneous account given by the assistant golf pro at a FL golf club
Assistant golf pro alleges that he saw:
A (relatively) famous mob lawyer - Frank Ragano - also Jimmy Hoffa's lawyer
Santo Trafficante Jr, the head of the Mob in Florida
Carlos Marcello, the head of the Mob in New Orleans
An unidentified man
And further that Ragano laid out a scheme in which Riggs would play two matches (both unscheduled at the time of the meeting, with no guarantees of participation by either Court or King), the first of which he would win, and the second of which he would throw.
All for forgiveness of an alleged mob debt of $100K.
First, this is hugely convoluted and not guaranteed. Riggs was 54 at the time, and though a great self-promoter, certainly couldn't guarantee to the mob that he would get Court and then King to play him.
Second, it involves two of the larger mob bosses in the country. The top guys need to hear about this?
You know where else you see Marcello and Trafficante mentioned in the same sentence ?
Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories.
This is just as credible.
Render unto me a break.

DSi was a great handheld and the 3DS has been a great iteration of it. As for it not being a clamshell, it gets them around the problem they've been having with either the hinges snapping or the screen getting scratched.

I'm not sure this solve screen scratching, it just moves the problem somewhere else (conveniently for them, a $12.99 accessory.)
I haven't checked the sales figures on the 3DS. The wife and I considered one at the time, but the 3D didn't sit well with me (i.e. I felt nauseous, which is not a normal problem for me.)
We opted for a classic DS (or whatever was out at the time) in part because I actually had some GBA games we thought we might use. (They're probably lost.)

wouldn't call it a disappointment, it was never going to match/beat the DS (best selling videogame handheld in history) but even with the sales slowing up, it should still end up as the second best selling handheld which is quite good considering the influx of phones and tablets which the DS didn't really have to worry about

Yeah have to agree with that. I get to see a lot of wrecked bikes. The latest was last week. Some dude had a full dresser with these retarded training wheel things. They have some spring system so they give but they are in contact with the ground. The dude "supposedly" came out of a turn and couldn't turn the wheel back, and he lost control. In reality those stupid fucking training wheels probably prevented him from leaning and he high sided it. Moral of the story, if you're a dumpy little shit and can't touch the ground, get a smaller fucking bike.

Daughter's order (1 of 2) of college textbooks arrived at de Monet manor today. The only wrinkle is she is 500 miles away at college (sophmore). And classes started this past Monday.
"But Dad! I'm sure I changed the address on my order to here from home."
"Yes, pumpkin - better check again."
So guess who gets to go to USPS or UPS tomorrow and arrange $hipment? And then do it again in a few days when 2 of 2 $hows up on the de Monet doorstep? What hair I have left is turning gray at an accelerating rate.

Better yet, don't use USPS at all. If the label were to come off your package, what would be the most valuable information to have immediately? What time the package was found, what had come into the room immediately prior, and what items had gone out recently. What does the USPS do?
They ship your shit to the National Postal Recovery Center in Atlanta -- where they open it up and discard what they see little value in, wait for you to give them a packing slip so they can pull items, and auction the rest off in a year.

With the widespread and overwhelming opposition to whacking Syria ...
... and the frequent dredging-up of previous comments about the requirement of Congressional Consultation and Approval ...
... could an attack on Syria be the the action that forces ... impeachment ... ?
Posted by: Arbalest at August 29, 2013 12:32 AM (FlRtG)
===
Sure, articles of impeachment will have to be initiated against the conservatives in the house & senate who failed to explain to Prez Obamussolini, the genius constitutional scholar what is actually written in the constitution.
Never again can we have the incredible dereliction of duty of failing to explain these hidden meanings in the obscure text shrouded by the Knight's Templar code to the professor!!! He was an underprivileged child!!!! The only reason they didn't tell him that he was supposed to read and understand the document that defines his job is because they are raaaaacisssstssss and they must be impeached, immediately!!!! HARRUMPH!!

The 3DS isn't just a DS with a 3D screen. It's a substantially more powerful machine. Even ignoring the 3D aspect, you cannot make proper use of it with a game that has to scale down to DS.
I found it a pretty worthwhile upgrade. I do like the 3D but in general the difference in power really shows. It's like a GameCube over an N64 (if the N64 were not severely constrain by mask ROM storage), in that developers just have more to utilize.

Oh and while she and I were chatting earlier this evening about forwarding her books, I casually inquired if she had mailed Sept's rent to the landlord.
"No, Roomate#2 said it's not due until the 15th."
Now, having had gone over this with her from the lease, I know she knows better.
"Pumpkin, the rent is due on the first, which for September is Sunday. Monday is a holiday and there's no mail service that day. Rent received after the 1st is late and and rent received on or after the 15th gets hit with a late fee. Mail the rent tomorrow. Always be on time with the rent."

On the other hand, I *strongly* recommend to any Moron/ette Hardy's Mayor of Casterbridge. Agree or disagree with Hardy's fatalist philosophy of life, but he was an master storyteller; that was a (fairly brief) book that spellbound me at 17.

1. Jobs you hate which pay no money (fast food, for example)
2. Jobs you hate which pay a lot of money (assembly line for the UAW, tax law)
3. Jobs you love which pay little money (most artists, teachers, working in an upscale boutique)
4. Jobs you love which pay a lot of money (rock musicians, movie stars, professional sports, some doctors, some inventors)
Most of us do not have the talent or skill to get jobs in category #4. Your job is to decide if you would rather be in categories 2 or 3, while avoiding category 1 at almost all costs.
And, may I say, it's no fair taking a job in category 3 and then bitching that you aren't paid like if you were in category 2.

"The Experts..." haven't we had enough from them? Global Warming... Afghanistan... Libya... Solar Energy... Green...
Enough from The Experts.
I'll go as far as saying "take the job that pays you the most, that you don't HATE." And the HATE has to be all-caps.
Because, yeah, those guys in the coal mines are there fulfilling their dreams.
The right message to kids is: GET THE SKILLS YOU NEED TO HAVE A CHOICE OF JOBS. That's what the experts should focus on. By the time you get to "a job that you hate," it's too fucking late. You get the job you get because it's the job you're qualified for.
Focus on qualifications. Take the hard math and science classes.
You'll find that money covers a lot of things. Showing up to a job that you don't love isn't so bad, if you're showing up in a car that you love, and planning a smoking vacation that you can afford.
Get skills. Skills get you money and flexibility. The whole "do what you love" line is generally bullshit.
