Quote of the Day I

"The bottom line is we're not broke, there's plenty of money, it's just the government doesn't have it,"

"The government has a right, the government and the people of the United States have a right to run the programs of the United States. Health, welfare, housing - all these things."

   -- Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN)

Quote of the Day II

"If fewer civilians carried weapons, police might be less trigger happy."

  -- David Frum

Quote of the Day III

"Thank God I was not on the property at the time of this attempted break in. I am an avid hunter and marksman and I will not hesitate to shoot anyone who has myself or family in fear for our lives. I take the invasion of my personal space very seriously regardless of who you are."

The Real Helen Thomas

She may have been the first woman reporter in the DC press corps but she was also a Jew-hating, hack of a reporter. And a fairly nasty person.

Still, as time went by, the awards poured in as Thomas became a Washington institution, with cameos in Hollywood movies and even The Simpsons. But the "odd thing about her awards and citations," Chait noted, "is that they almost never mention any specific contributions she has made to journalism save for being female and, well, old."

Or as journalist Andrew Ferguson once put it, "Everybody admires Helen, though nobody can tell you why."

The best answer I can come up with: She had a long tradition of existence.

Will Hillary Be the One?

I'm with Jonah on this one - Hillary has never been a great politician, given a moving  speech, or had a compelling message. Pretty much her only qualifications are 1) that she's married to Bill Clinton and 2) hated by the Right.

Plus she's been on the public stage for over 20 years already which makes her fairly stale by historical presidential candidate standards.

Quick: Can you think of a single truly interesting thing Hillary Clinton has ever said?

...The simple fact, by my lights at least, is that Hillary Clinton is not a compelling personality in her own right. Even Bill Clinton's harshest critics have to concede that he was a masterful politician, a jazz impresario mixing deep insights, policy minutiae, and folksy cornpone peppered with compelling half-truths and daring outright lies. Barack Obama isn't nearly as gifted as Bill was on the stump or in the backrooms, but the man has political talent. Hillary's a very solid policy wonk, but the only thing that makes her a rock star is that people keep calling her one.

Tawana Brawley Finally Starts Paying For Her Lies

Steven Pagones tracked her down in Virginia and had her wages garnished.

Twenty-five years after accusing an innocent man of rape, Tawana Brawley is finally paying for her lies.

Last week, 10 checks totaling $3,764.61 were delivered to ex-prosecutor Steven Pagones - the first payments Brawley has made since a court determined in 1998 that she defamed him with her vicious hoax.

A Virginia court this year ordered the money garnisheed from six months of Brawley's wages as a nurse there.

She still owes Pagones $431,000 in damages. And she remains defiantly unapologetic.

"It's a long time coming," said Pagones, 52, who to this day is more interested in extracting a confession from Brawley than cash.

"Every week, she'll think of me," he told The Post. "And every week, she can think about how she has a way out - she can simply tell the truth."

The New Reverse Amazons?

But instead of cutting off their breasts members of the German ceremonial Guard Battalions seem to be growing moobs. And doctors think they know why:

They set out "to investigate the increased incidence of left-sided gynecomastia in members of the German Ministry of Defense Guard Battalion who perform ceremonial duties in Berlin . A possible explanation is the mechanical impact of the carbine against the left side of the body during the drills that these soldiers regularly perform as part of their ceremonial duties".

Seventy-five percent of the gynecomastiacal Guard Battalion chest-slappers had an enlarged left - only the left, not the right - breast.

The other patients - the non-chest-slappers - as a group showed neither sinister nor dexter breastedness. One third of them did have an enlarged left breast only. But another third of them had only a big right breast. The third third had a big pair.

Eight People Who Were Banned From Baseball

For pretty much bullshit reasons. Including Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays.

Following their careers, Mantle and Mays spent some of their time working as goodwill ambassadors for casinos in Atlantic City. They weren't working for MLB at the time, and it's not like they were pit bosses, either. The two would show up to greet casino patrons, sign autographs, play in golf tournaments, and do other little appearances to raise their casinos' profiles. In Mays' case, his services contract with the casino actually forbid him from doing any gambling himself, so the whole thing seemed harmless enough.

Commissioner Bowie Kuhn wasn't having any of it, though. He felt that baseball legends shouldn't be hanging around casinos, so he banned both men from working for baseball teams in any capacity. Cooler heads eventually prevailed, and Kuhn's successor, Peter Uberroth, overturned the bans.

Man Attempts to Woo Women Via the PowerPoint Method

A highly eligible single guy now known as the "the Mad Bachelor of Australia" hands out a 99-page manual to all women before their first date with him in which he lays out his like/dislikes, preferences, plans for the relationship, as well as pertinent details like the taste of his semen, the six stages of his orgasms, and when you'll be allowed to meet his family.

Meh I've read HR policy manuals that were sexier than this. So I'm guessing this is a case of a full-on Asperger's persuing his dream to be a Playa.

110 "Another blood boiler: new developments in the government plans to micromanage community development, ensuring people are packed like sardines in the cities by preventing further development in the suburbs."

More utter policy incoherence in the Obama era. Liberals can't decide if they love or hate suburbs.

When white people fled from the cities to suburbs to get away from urban blacks, liberals decided that suburbs had to be the greatest most wonderful thing ever, since it was discriminatory and awful that blacks weren't in those nice places in large numbers, and Section 8 had to be urgently expanded in order to get urban blacks into the suburban awesomeness.

Now, suburbs have become evil again and must be punished and destroyed.

It's rather all along the lines of George Will's comment that the Obama administration "says it can see a future without the internal combustion engine, but finds itself unable to imagine that future without the Chrysler Corporation somewhere in it."

As an aside, production of the AMC designed Jeep Cherokee--one of the best small SUVs ever made--continues to this day in China, as the Jeep 2500. I would buy one in a heartbeat. Ah. An opportunity for me to expose the horde to some more vintage Micky Spillane. In this case from "I, The Jury"

It emerges that Charlotte Manning, the dishy lady psychiatrist with whom Hammer has inexplicably fallen in love, murdered Jack Williams, his wartime buddy. Once he makes this discovery, Hammer pumps a .45 slug into the general vicinity of Charlotte's navel, setting up the last three lines of the book:

"How c-could you? she gasped.

I only had a moment before talking to a corpse, but I got it in.

"It was easy," I said.

325 Or Fi.  Each Japanese regiment could have 2,600 or 3,500 men.  Lets use the lower number - 2,600.  37,000 troops means 14 regiments plus flotsam for HQ.

A Japanese infantry division could have 3 or 4 infantry regiments.  Then there are the artillery regiments, 900 cannon.  Plus supporting battalions and companies like MP and engineer.  So depending on if we say each division has 3 regiments we get 4 divisions or 4 regiments and get 3 divisions.  So there was a powerful force that could have taken Malay bottled up useless by two squadrons of PT boats.

The former SFPD chief retired about five or six years ago.

At age _53_. On a pension package of nearly three hundred thousand dollars per annum. Yes, you read that figure correctly. Gas tax revenue is no longer enough to pay for roads. States are looking elsewhere for cash.
Toll roads are an easy way and all-electronic tolling makes it much more palatable to citizens.

You know what?  I'm ok with that.  Requiring the users of a highway to pay a toll is perfectly reasonable.

432 331 Oh, and fuck the NCAA. I don't care if Manziel sold his autograph. College sports is a racket and I'm fine with the whole thing crumbling. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at August 04, 2013 10:54 PM (ZPrif) D4 football is coming. The NCAA knows it, and they are scared shitless. It will be SEC, Big10, Big12, ACC, and PAC12, and that is it. It is why Notre Dame "joined" the ACC. BYU will join the Big12, and that's it. Once they do this, players will get a stipend, and we will get a 8 team playoff. The big schools are tired of the small schools calling the shots while they bring the money into the NCAA because no one cares about watching SMU play Rice when Clemson is playing Virginia Tech. Thus, the NCAA will allow the new "D4" division made up of those schools.

433 This is the second time I have completely agreed with Bill Kristol of The Weekly Standard. He wrote that “a year ago Al Queda were on the run & NOW we are!” Does anyone think it’s a good idea to let the world know that the Senators on the Intel Committee let word out that this is the most chatter since 9/11/2001? Sometime it is best to keep it quiet. If they STFU intelligence sources wouldn’t know that they’ve been outed. Remember the doctor in jail in Pakistan? The one that helped the US get Bin Laden? He’s still in jail as far as I know. SCOAMT did nothing to help the man. He should have had him & his family lifted out of there the day before they got Osama. But the SCOAMF just does nothing and the man is in jail for how long? Remember when the US was feared? It isn’t now. We are a joke because they LIVs and FSA reelected TFG!

434 I'm neither for or against toll roads. It's just a reality that states are having increasing difficulty affording to maintain their existing road network, let alone build new roads. As the EPA forces higher fuel mileage on cars, gas tax revenue is declining per mile driven. And electric cars don't pay gas taxes at all. The gas tax was originally supposed to be the use fee. But the linkage is breaking.

436 "A lot of those foreclosed homes are in bad shape. Stuff has been stolen out of them like appliances, outlets, light fixtures, etc. Then a lot of them haven't been running their environmental systems so there is plenty of mildew and funk."

You haven't seen "bad shape" till you have seen what Section 8 tenants can do to properties.

First off, they do no maintenance themselves. Nothing. Not even the ordinary basics that have traditionally been figured as renter responsibilities. If a light bulb burns out, they expect that it will be changed for them by someone else. If the sink clogs, instead of buying a can of Drano first, they'll insist on calling the most expensive 24-hour plumber they can find, and forwarding the bill to the property owner, to be paid on pain of litigation by the government. If they lose keys, likewise with the locksmith.

But many S8 tenants not only do not do minor fixes, they don't do ANYTHING.

One S8 horror story I heard involved a guy who rented his late parents' home via the program. He lived out of the area and thought it would be a quick fix while he got his own home squared away for sale. A year later, the city insisted he evict the Section 8 crew. They had already secured new S8 quarters elsewhere and moved into those.

He showed up to find that not only was the interior of the house unfit for habitation, and red-tagged by the city, but the backyard was filled with hundreds of pounds of rotting trash. A neighbor said that he had never seen the Section 8 tenants lug the cans to the curb for pickup even once in the entire year. They just tossed the garbage off the back deck.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at August 04, 2013 11:17 PM (0WdQr)

Ortega is old, and not real healthy; he won't be around forever. And he has morphed into an old-style caudillo; kind of a Somoza-lite. The die-hard Sandinistas despise him for betraying the revolution. But he has liberalized land ownership, and instituted a pretty respectable mining law, which has encouraged foreign investment. All things considered, he's less of a bane than Obama.

Right now, there are real bargains to be had in Nica real estate. Ten years from now, there won't be, for sure.

Did you know that Ortega has banned abortion in Nicaragua, a cynical attempt to get the RC Church on side? It's true.

I have to say, I do like the people there a lot.

It was next to impossible to get the mofos out even when they hadn't paid the rent for six months or so. Anyway, when they finally DID shove off, the house was an absolute disaster. My "favorite" part was where the husband -- it was a couple -- had decided to tune up his motorcycle in the living room. I didn't have to worry about running through the trees in shorts, T-shirt and sneakers. Half my blood was consumed by skeeters, sure, but they didn't transmit anything infectious. Now, kids have to be swaddled in long clothes, boots, and DEET for fear of the ticks.

490 >>You know what? I'm ok with that. Requiring the users of ahighway to pay a toll is perfectly reasonable.

The Mass Turnpike Authority is an example of what is wrong with toll roads. Thesy set up tolls to pay for the road, with the stipulation that once the road was paid off the tolls would go away. It should have been paid off sometime during the 70's. But, being MA, the MTA became the place where friends of the Governor went, and they earn crazy salaries (even their secretaries make crazy money). The MTA continues to find new ways to go into dept just so that they can continue to exist, even when it means going into debt to build spiffy buildings next to the tolls for the benefit of the toll collectors (who would be unnecessary if not for the debt).

495 435 I'm neither for or against toll roads. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at August 04, 2013 11:28 PM (ZPrif) There was enough money in the highway funds, but they renamed them "transportation funds" and transfered the money from roads to airports, seaports, bus stations, choo choo trains, subways, and bike paths. You go to school to learn something. If you happen to be very good at a sport, that's great. If you're good enough at it that you earn a scholarship, that's even better. But please note that an athletic scholarship is just that -- a SCHOLARSHIP. You are going to college on the strength of your athletic ability, but it is called a SCHOLARSHIP for a reason. As soon as a college becomes known more for its athletic program than the quality of its graduates, I throw up my hands in frustration.

Sorry, but Jonah Goldberg completely beclowns himself there.  Clinton (Bill) was a masterful politician?  Really?  Mr 43% in a 3-way election stumbles around with idiotic ideas, helps his party get clobbered and lose the House for the first time since he was born, and pathetically mumbles at a press conference that "the president is still relevant"?  Oh - and then the internet economy boom (and bubble) occurs, while he stands there wondering what it's all about, and he's a fucking genius?  Only worthwhile thing he ever did was succumb, finally and pathetically, to GOP insistence that the immoral catastrophe of welfare be reformed.  (OK, he did right on NAFTA, and actually had to break a sweat to do something - but even Carter had airline and gas de-regulation - so even the worst presidents get ONE thing right)

Policy "wonk"?  Are you fucking kidding?  Oh, compared to the absurd affirmative-action non-entity ignoramus now "president", perhaps - but compared to an intelligent person?  How so?

Oh, and as a statesman, he "fathered" the obviously disastrous, unworkable, and unwise Oslo nonsense, and after the theretofore biggest domestic terrorist event in US history, absurdly and outrageously slanders political talk radio as the cause?

His "wife"?  Are you kidding?  She's actually no more mediocre and pathetic than he - it's just that people for reasons beyond understanding are "charmed" by Bill's micron-deep undergraduate grifting act. whereas Hillary is so arrogant and dim and clumsy that she beclowns herself nearly continuously.

Obama?  Are you kidding?  A "talented" politician?  Examples of his political talent?  A degraded, dumbed-down, racist, narcissism-worshipping husk of a country disgracefully throws its panties and hotel room key on the stage of an uninteresting, unaccomplished, nasty, clumsy, inarticulate, uneducated, astonishingly unwordly little creature raised in the cretinous and despicable swamps of left-wing racist soft fascism?  Talent?  When, where?

As I've said before, it's not just the politicians, and civil servants, and journalists that are sub-mediocre (and getting worse fast) - it's the pundits, too.  They were mostly unreadably superficial or clueless 25 years ago - now they're as dumb, and arrogant, as the typical successful Beltway mediocrity.

The same pain repeats for the Jets when you know that no matter how much Capt Buttfumble sucks in the preseason, Rex will start him in the opener and every game unless he gets murdered out there by a blitzing linebacker.

Take this to the bank; Santonio Holmes won't play before November if he plays at all this year. Not like it mattered since Buttfumble would suck even if he had Calvin Hill, Andre Johnson, and Victor Cruz to pass to

521 Gibbon's description of 6th century Rome makes what the Goths and Vandals did seem like a paradise: “Survey the other hills of the city, the vacant space is interrupted only by ruins and gardens. The forum of the Roman people, where they assembled to enact their laws and elect their magistrates, is now enclosed for the cultivation of pot-herbs, or thrown open for the reception of swine and buffaloes. The public and private edifices, that were founded for eternity, lie prostrate, naked, and broken, like the limbs of a mighty giant; and the ruin is the more visible, from the stupendous relics that have survived the injuries of time and fortune.”

If there's ever a nuclear plant meltdown somewhere that I'd like to live -- unlikely on multiple counts -- I'd be all over buying a great big swathe of contaminated land and living on it. After the first few months and the decay of the hottest isotopes, it's just not that big an issue any longer.

I would not have been volunteering to be on the Chernobyl first responder crew, picking up pieces of glowing hot fuel rods in my hands and tossing them over the edge of the reactor hall roof. But I wouldn't be especially alarmed about living in Pripyat today, if Pripyat were a place I wanted to live. (Wouldn't want to live there even under normal conditions.)

Shit, there are elderly Belorussian babushkas living in little cottages in the woods around Pripyat right now. But guess what? No rude young punks show up to steal their stuff, which is what happens to elderly babushkas all the time in most of the rest of that part of the world.

Think of living in a fallout zone as the ne plus ultra of "get off my lawn".

The San Onofre plant north of San Diego just got scheduled for an early decommissioning. A damned shame. I would have been up for spending my golden years sitting on the beach in northern San Diego County. 538 My first apartment was on the second floor of a converted house. It was an old building dating from around 1920, and, honestly, it was kind of a dump. But my landlady did the best she could keeping it in good repair. Neither one of us was rich. I'm not handy at all with home repairs, so there wasn't much I could do in that respect. I mowed the lawn, and when the place got infested with mice, I tracked down the opening where they were getting in and installed a piece of screen which solved the problem. Of course I always paid my rent on time. She called me a "dream tenant" and every Christmas sent me a card and a tin of homemade cookies. She said that I treated the place as if it were my own, which I took as a great compliment. I lived there for seven years, and was kind of sad to move out, since I had gotten used to the building's flaws and eccentricities, and had such a good relationship with the landlady.

542 Wild dogs or politicians/residents in Detroit, is there a difference?

At night the stray dogs invaded the city. Hundreds and hundreds of dogs who taking advantage of the people's fear poured through the deserted streets, the empty squares, the abandoned alleys, and where they came from nobody knew because during the day they never appeared. Perhaps during the day they hid in the rubble, inside the cellars of the shattered houses, in the sewers among the rats, or perhaps they did not exist because they weren't dogs but ghosts of dogs who materialized with the darkness to imitate the men who killed them. Like men they divided into bands consumed by hate, like men they wanted only to tear each other to pieces, and the monotonous rite always took place under the same pretext: the conquest of a sidewalk made precious by food scraps and scum.

They may fund other things, too - when I lived in MA you could always count on the MTA to have its plows out as soon as the first snowflake was spotted. The MTA makes sure they spend your money in ways that make you think you couldn't survive without them.

553 Posted by: RWC - Team Mace FTW at August 04, 2013 11:50 PM (8FeS+) Ok, dumbass when it comes to real estate but I know there is a downside to buying property in Detroit. What is it? (Besides the obvious) Say I bought a block of houses - do I own the land as well? Many years ago, I lived very near the corner of 10 Mile Rd and Van Dyke. I spent some time in the area. The land is relatively flat, and is mostly reasonably good farmland that was changed to suburban housing. In some cases, it was very heavy industry, but the ruins are still there. Telling the difference is usually very easy. One problem with the "housing" areas is that, legend has it, starting in the 70's, but maybe sooner, workers who wanted to make a couple of extra bucks and/or get in good with the boss, would dispose of "things" in their backyard. These "things" were usually a barrel or 4 of chemicals. Since people in the area were not changing homes very often, this was not a problem. And even if they did change homes, no one told. It might be a problem now ... not that you want to farm the land, but that tests might detect the stuff, or it might show up later as genetic defects or cancer ... Tests are better, but there's a cost ... and a cleanup cost. Then there are the people. To really change the reality of Detroit government, the locals will have to start believing and behaving differently. Very probably, a lot of them see reality and have religion now, and will like you a lot ... will "a lot" be enough? Buying is easy, selling is tough. Check the tax rates. Can you walk away; more specifically, if you walk away, how far can Detroit pursue your money? The murder rate there is ... non-trivial. The article yesterday notwithstanding, coming back to life is real tough.

But on Monday night, HillÂ’s daughter Alexandria, or Alex as they liked to call her, was rushed to a Rockdale hospital with severe head injuries, then flown to Scott and White ChildrenÂ’s Emergency Hospital in Temple and immediately placed on life support.

Alex was living with foster parents after DFPS removed her from her parent's home last November for "neglectful supervision."

Hill admits they were smoking pot when their daughter was asleep.

“We never hurt our daughter. She was never sick, she was never in the hospital, and she never had any issues until she went into state care.”

592 By my reckoning, this random average late-night AoS thread has gotten about 600 comments in 3 hours and 20 minutes, which is 180+20 minutes or 200 minutes, which (halved) is 300 comments in 100 minutes, or (this is how non-math-whizzes like me do arithmetic) 3 comments in 1 minute, or 1 comment every 20 seconds. Seriously, does anyone know of any other blog (aside from HuffPo, but does that really count as a blog?) which gets this volume and rapidity of commentary? Right or left? Or even non-political? Wonder if anyone has ever done a study of comment stats on blogs. The downside to this seemingly good news is that each individual comment -- include this one right here - is thereby rendered comparatively meaningless, washed away in a sea of other comments. I've got to start commenting on silent untrafficked blogs. At least there I'd stand out.

Harris says Thursday morning, Small finally told them the truth.

"She had evidently been frustrated with the child all day long. She had... the child... had evidently gotten up before the Small's did and she had went and got into some food and some water," said Harris. "That is what Mrs. Small was initially upset with her about.... had made her stand in a dark room, according to our reports, for at least three-to-four hours, wouldn't let her sit or anything."

Then around 7:00 that night, the young child, so full of life, was knocked unconscious.

"She actually admitted that she had slung the child down on the floor," said Harris.

Small told investigators she raised the toddler over her head and slung her down toward the floor twice.

"On the third time down she said she lost her grip and dropped the child. Slammed the child down on the floor," explained Harris.

Harris says Small's husband, who wasn't home when the incident happened, became emotional and even cried when talking to police. But not Small.

"I did not see a whole lot of remorse. I think it's more like a lot of times these people's, they're sorry that they're in trouble. This is the sense that I get. It's still about them, it's not really remorse about the child. I never got that feeling," added Harris.

The Small's had another foster child who is eight-months-old. That child has been removed.

Police say neither Small or her husband had jobs, but were instead planning to foster between five and six children as a source of income.

Small is in the Milam County Jail. Her bond has been set at $100,000.

I hope they don't run out of death juice before her spot in the queue comes due.

Under that, each college athlete will get some sort of stipend, even the members of the cross country team. If the NCAA doesn't go along with it, the ACC, Big10, Big12, SEC and PAC12 will walk and form their own organization. At that point, the NCAA becomes a shell of its former self.

Kinesiology is the science of understanding how muscles and body structures work to DO work. Or sports. Basically mechanical engineering for humans.

Not inherently moonbatty, but I suppose any branch of science can be contaminated by moonbattery.

637 594 By my reckoning, this random average late-night AoS thread has gotten about 600 comments in 3 hours and 20 minutes, which is 180+20 minutes or 200 minutes, which (halved) is 300 comments in 100 minutes, or (this is how non-math-whizzes like me do arithmetic) 3 comments in 1 minute, or 1 comment every 20 seconds.

Well, considering that over half the Libertarian wing of the GOP are actually Jacksonian Democrats.....it depends on what you mean by "opposite party". If you mean the racism of Bull Connor, the race pandering of Al Sharpton, the race payoffs of Pigford, the crony thefts of Jon Corzine, the nihilistic blind worship of the nothing (BHO), the utter depravity of Pelosi, the jacking of Constitutional structure by Harry Reid.....probably not. If you mean, "my grandparents and my parents voted for Democrats because they wanted to live like they wanted and deal with others fairly" Dems.....er, maybe. But they'd either have to be really removed from things or dumb as posts to not have noticed what a cesspool the party has become.

670 jacksontn, I think I was GOP before I was born--hard right on almost any issue you care to name when I was a teenager, now a bit more of a libertarian streak.  I think it's what that excellent sidebar piece earlier today called a Jacksonian Republican.  Mrs. Crank comes from a hard right family, but she's registered Dem, I'd call her a Reagan Democrat.  She's pro-life, pro-gun, pro-death penalty--she suffers from the delusion that conservatives are absolute knuckle draggers on gay rights which is her biggest hangup, as far as I can tell.

That would be interesting, except that I've already got Bloomberg on the "cosmic, nuclear-grade asshole" list and figure that nothing related to him is other than effluvium. He could exhume Mother Teresa for necrophilic sex and I wouldn't despise him any more; he could donate his fortune to good works and become a Franciscan and I wouldn't despise him any less. The only news I could see myself interested in regarding Bloomberg would necessarily involve someone else -- either someone got the political gumption to indict him, or his company figured out how much of a liability he was and gave him the punt.

674 Sooo... this whole "reckoning", as far as the Continuing Resolution goes?  Does anyone else feel like it should be primarily[i/] about the ACA, (obamacare), but with everything else thrown in?

Can't we have each individual idiot (R) take offense to everything from F&F through the IRS?  Can't there be a case made for grandstanding over each-and-every issue, tied-in, collectively?

The very thought of Eric Holder's obstinacy, alone could sail one-thousand ships, let alone the grand-sum of all evils.  ...right?

Should I be one of the Congresscritters at a Town Hall, speaking with my constituency, I'd let fly with a compare-and-contrast style with a touch of Southern Baptist Unholy Hell over EVERYTHING.

Selling Freedom should never be this tough.  I think it was Breitbart that said, "If you can't sell Freedom and Liberty, you suck.

Leave the question "open-faced", in the style "Progressives".  Keep asking "Why?"   ...for no other reason that just to turn the Progs in attendance, like Reagan Democrats in the seventies.

I think Charles Krauthammer is wrong when he says that you can't make decisions, persuasions and government from one-half of one-third of a Representative Republic; the problem being that it is one-fourth.  The MFM being the ultimate obstacle and fourth branch of government.

...The Fed being another.  Damnit.  Whatever.  I think you get my point, however and I'd tie everything into this administration's failures.

When the House holds the purse-strings, there is leverage.  When the message is correct, you have persuasion.  When Liberty is at stake, you have fear.  When Freedom Rings, people listen.

Why don't we know more about these scandals?  Why?  Why did the President say one thing and do another?  ...multiple times.  Why?  Why won't this administration govern instead of threaten gloom-and-doom?  I thought that was what the "Progressives" hated about Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et. al. -?  Why?

*Hyperbolic Fiction to Follow*...

-A.P.:  Dateline, Washington D.C.:  The People vs. Washington D.C.  -The People Lost in a split 5-4 Supreme Court Decision.  Justice Kennedy wrote the dissenting opinion, as Scalia strangled Roberts with his shoelace.

-"We could have had a Representative Republic, but you couldn't keep it."  Kennedy said as tears rolled down his face and into the mouths of the Free Shit Army.  "We lost today because Case Law has superceded Constitutional Law.  We've forgotten where we've come from and it seems we no longer care."

-Kennedy was found dead in his office within hours, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

-President Obama has already mentioned Nanci Pelosi and Al Sharpton as replacements for the fallen justices.  Mr. Scalia's attorneys could not be reached for comment.

Truth?  nope.  Justice?  nope.  ...the American Way?

Under a Parliamentary system, it is much, much, much, much easier to start a third party. Under our system, there has to be a serious and long-lasting crisis of confidence -- because it is designed to have only two parties that matter.

And, BTW, I first registered to vote in 1983 as a Libertarian -- because that party had something to believe in: full support of individual rights; minimization of the role of government; market-based solutions to tradeoffs....and watched it go from irrelevance to batshit crazy over the next 25 years -- supporting no rights but pot-smoking, supporting statism, and allocating attention through politics. After 2008, I joined the GOP because the progressive elite Dems were so incredibly vile -- but my attention was piqued by the surge of the tea party in 2010. Nevertheless, I sucked it up with the GOP for 2012....

The GOP is setting themselves up for a preference cascade. They think they've got everyone in the bag because the Left is so widely hated, not realizing that they are only slightly less loathed, themselves. We could truly be at one of those points where a new party can arise.

If half the politicians that deserved to hang from lampposts actually were, you'd only have 217 Representatives, 50 Senators, and either the President or Vice-President to convince that self-preservation was an issue.....and they might be amenable to discussion. Instead, you continue to see government packed with superannuated crapweasels whose firm grip on incumbency is matched only by their razor-sharp focus on concerns within Washington -- rather than the effects of their policies in "flyover country."

The Tea Parties have been adequately "held-off" by the IRS and Bitch Lerner for a few years. Long enough to get Obama re-elected.

...that will turn. I pray. I can only hope that this trend will continue on its path to Liberty, Freedom and Justice.

Again, I'm an old-school Libertarian....which means I'm closer to Tea Partiers than current Libertarians; I'm currently in the GOP because of my revulsion to progressive Dems.....which means I'm closer to Tea Partiers than GOP leadership. I believe in the Constitution and American exceptionalism, which means I'm closer to Tea Partiers than RINOs. If anyone believes that I'm so thoroughly GOP that they can continue to lie to me, badger me for funds, go limp against the Dem agenda, and advance ANY FUCKING THING LABELED "COMPREHENSIVE" [when such has been demonstrated over-and-over-and-over-and-over as a shit sandwich] -- they're nuts.

695 "Instead, you continue to see government packed with superannuated crapweasels whose firm grip on incumbency is matched only by their razor-sharp focus on concerns within Washington -- rather than the effects of their policies in "flyover country." "

Yeah, I know.  I addressed that in my "movie review" earlier.  Our Representative Republic now has a Legislature; bicameral House & Senate, (that no longer represents the States), an Executive, (that is no longer exposed by the media), and a Judiciary, (that relies on Case-Law in lieu of Constitutional Law).

-There is also the Fourth Estate, the MFM.  (Delenda EST).

-And The Fed as the Fifth Branch of Tomfoolery.

I still believe that one-half of the Legislature can bring purse-string power to the fallacies of a top-down system.  Self-preservation is a big selling point.  Liberty is also a common bond.

Should these (R) fuckers not be able to unite behind these BASIC policies?  I see no other recourse than using "Progressive" tactics to cut the cancer out of our own party.

Thing is, we don't have to totally agree -- I don't know if I wouldn't disagree with my own posts by a degree or two, depending on when I'd written them.....but I know that "future me" and "past me" could agree on a bunch of things and discuss the others. I get a lot of crap from the Repubs saying that we're so simpatico and that they value my input.....and then I see grenades lobbed against Cruz or Paul (not to mention the total demonization of Palin or Bolton), and total sucking-up by McCain, Graham, Collins, et al....and I thing, "oh, really?"

It's like we have dueling hypocrisies -- the Dems claim to despise America, but really want to own it; the GOP claims to hate government, but really wants to run it.

699 That was probably the most lucid I've been, as an insomniac, posting on the ONT.  There was a stream of consciousness that pissed me off enough to actually believe that a singular defining thread between RINOs, Libertarians and "The Otherwise (R)-Elected" would be self-preservation.

Perhaps delusion is a better word than "lucidity".  At 4:28 am EST, I mistake words for reason, perhaps

Administrative scandals and unanswered questions should be enough to unite a disparate bunch of pussies, should it not?

I wonder how an enormous Shit-Hammer of Justice remains unused.  Why can't the enormity of these scandals be used to justify a hold-up of the purse-strings?

Did the last "Government Shutdown" go in favor of the "popular" Clintons?  It did not.  The Republicans gained the Senate for the first time in fifty years.

It is good to be correct.  It is good to be right.  It is good to have mathematics on your side.

...what sucks?  GOP idiots who won't employ reason due to media pressure.  Math is math.  Six trillion with nothing to show for it is math.

If the House had possessed anything even resembling cojones, they would have passed 500 individual bills funding conservative priorities for the next two years, sent 'em to the Senate, and adjourned until the next Federal election. If the Senate sat on 'em, vital government functions would have gone unmet -- but there'd be no House to argue against. If the President veto'd 'em -- vital government functions might get shut down -- but there'd be no House to argue against. Any attempt to say, "House obstruction...." could be met in the districts by "we passed it -- what obstruction are you talking about?"

703 Maybe we could get together for a beer, CC.  We could meet in Columbus and commiserate!  lol j/k.

...I'm sure we both don't have time for that, but I'll continue to offer my heartfelt prayers for Maddie.  I've been on my knees every night for that little girl and your family.

May God Bless you, sir.  May God Bless your family.

705 Somewhat O/T -- but I've been musing about the Benghazi thing. Everyone is going off on the "it's because there was weapons-trading run by a couple-dozen CIA at the Annex" line......but that's so old that it really doesn't warrant a coverup as big as it has gotten.

I'm thinking that the real story is that the CIA was transferring weapons to someone actually on the forbidden terrorists list that could cause a great deal of trouble to the Assad regime -- that would be mildly scandalous, since anyone on the list is officially a pariah....but easily forgiven, since Assad's not exactly on the buddies list.

This was conveniently sited in Libya, where there was no central government left to check armaments in-and-out of the country and presumably far enough away that Syria and Iran couldn't readily get there.

Through a combination of incompetence, negligence, and specific actions traceable to the Adminstration, Iranian forces/paramilitary/allied jihadists successfully attacked the Consulate and Annex, driving out the Americans and capturing arms (that Americans weren't supposed to have).

Again, supposition -- but it might help explain the amount of soiled panties in the political class.

706 I can't argue/agree with you any longer, Cthulu.  I would love to have proven a point here, tonight, but I can't.  I can only offer a glue that the House seems destined to reject.

All I can accomplish on my own is making calls every day.  Sometimes I am met by sycophantic idiots.  Sometimes I am met by hard-core opponents, sometimes I am met by "just taking opinions"- boy/girl.

Ohio is a battleground State and I was amazed that my district was taken over by Betty Sutton, (D), as it has gone (R) for fifty-plus years.  Gerrymandering has made my district's positional House-Seat a mix of inner-city and gun-rural.  Guess whose population is greater?

I am pissed.

I try.  I'll continue to try.

You're so very, very, welcome, sir.  That little girl has been paramount in my mind for weeks.  My knees cannot hit the ground often enough to allow for the prayers to flow.

I ask of God his personal connection for your blessed loved ones.  I ask of Him His Grace and Love for the afflicted innocent and those who surround and love her.

I've shed tears for the innocent, as this little girl is amongst them.  May He Grace your lives and assuage your fears.  May His Holy Love infect your souls with warmth and comfort.

...In Jesus' Name, I Pray.

It's 59 here in Eastern MA this morning. Even better, the humidity is way down. Feels like Fall, and I love it!

Of course that means even colder days are coming, and I'm not looking forward to the snowy, frozen days and nights ahead. I'll be shivering in three layers of clothing plus heavy coat, and thinking nostalgically about those 84-degree mornings in Dallas.

Also thinking nostalgically about other things in Texas and regretting having come to MA, but that's another story....
