22 Maps That Show How Americans Speak English Totally Different From Each Other. Equality

Well, well. Looks like we're finally getting some equality when it comes to dishin' out punishment for teacher sex predators. Female teacher, 45, gets life in prison for having sex with 14 year old student.
Apparently the juries in Columbus, Georgia haven't heard of the double standard for female teachers accused of having sex with underage boys. Typically, these ladies get probation or a brief (months) jail term, while their male counterparts receives years and years in prison. But not this time. This time a jury slapped former teacher Cristina Preston, 45, with a LIFE sentence, with no chance of parole for 25 years after she was caught in a parked car in a park with underage boy.

Useless College Courses
With college getting so dang expensive, you'd think that folks would avoid classes that are really a waste of your time and money. 20 Completely Ridiculous College Courses Being Offered At U.S. Universities. Of course, college leadership could help out by doing away with some ridiculous graduation requirements that have nothing to do with your actual degree but force you take these electives.
6. "Invented Languages: Klingon and Beyond" (The University Of Texas) - Why would anyone want to learn Klingon? Who really speaks Esperanto, anyway? Could there ever be a language based entirely on musical scales? Using constructed/invented languages as a vehicle, we will try to answer these questions as we discuss current ideas about linguistic theory, especially ideas surrounding the interaction of language and society. For example, what is it about the structure of Klingon that makes it look so "alien"? What was it about early 20th century Europe that spawned so many so-called "universal" languages? Can a language be inherently sexist? We will consider constructed/invented languages from a variety of viewpoints, such as languages created as fictional plot-devices, for philosophical debates, to serve an international function, and languages created for private fun. We won't be learning any one language specifically, but we will be learning about the art, ideas, and goals behind invented languages using diverse sources from literature, the internet, films, video games, and other aspects of popular culture.
Let The Wookie Win

Good lord, the TSA thinks a lightsaber cane is a weapon? It's never wise to upset a wookie.
The actor known for his role as the Wookiee from Star Wars had his cane confiscated by airport security on his way back from a Sci-Fi convention. Seven-plus-foot-tall Peter Mayhew had his lightsaber cane seized when TSA thought it was an actual weapon, but thanks to some pictures posted to Twitter, they let the Wookiee win.

clicky noise - dead battery, loose terminal connections.
cranky, but no runny -- check fuel, air, spark.
If its been really rainy, and the ride is some years old, hose down distributor cap and plug wires with WD-40 to displace any water that may be shorting out spark. Reseat plug wires at same time. Real old plug rubbery plug wires can crack exposing carbon conductor to moisture. The pricier silicone ones aren't as prone to this.

I volunteered at a big cat rescue. Tigers are the worst pet imaginable short of a black mamba or spitting cobra. Just the meat bill alone can be staggering. And you really don't want to underfeed your 'pet' tiger.
Only people with tiger cubs disagree. When they hit three hundred pounds and are not even half way grown people start to see the error in their ways.

I think the main take away from this should be that it works.

Thought you'd be interested... just read an article about Presidential nicknames. As we all know. Andrew Jackson was known as "Ol' Hickory." Well, historians have recently been pow-wowing and coming up with the official nicknames for our more modern presidents. Here's their findings of the nicknames most suitable for 20th century POTUSes.
- Truman: Ol' "I'll nuke your ass"
- Eisenhower: Ol' "I'm not really here"
- Kennedy: Ol "Show me where the drugs and hookers are"
- Johnson: Ol' Crazyshit
- Nixon: Ol' "This is a recording"
- Ford: Ol' placeholder
- Carter: Ol' dumbshit
- Reagan: Ol' "Best ever"
- Bush 41: Ol' "Message: I care"
- Clinton: (tie) Ol' "Horniest horny toad that ever hornied" and Ol' "I'll sleep with anything"
- Bush 43: Ol' "Why is everything always my fault"
And of course, Obama has yet to be assigned a nickname.

Its probably tablets in general. Back in the late 90's IBM tried to sell a tablet version of the ThinkPads I did some software work on.
It was a (relatively) powerful and capable machine for its era, but it had all the same input problems current tablets do.
As a laptop substitute they're maddening. Soft keyboards sucked then, they suck now. An emulated mouse is still NOT a mouse. Apps not designed specifically for them, might as well have been written by the Spanish Inquisition.

And luckily the door policy at A-kon was a bit more porous. Only way I got into Dealers Room on Sunday with time leftover to get to car was because I did a ninja trick. They had a line for it two hours before opening time. Already was in the area outside Dealers Room because just left Artist Alley. So asked a staffer where end of line was for Dealers Room. Nodded and walked down the line where they said the end was supposed to be. I ran into another staffer and asked where the end was. They told me to exit out the doors and re-enter hotel to find the end. I merely nodded and started to walk back up the line because that was where the doors were. Instead of using the doors I merely blended into the cleared line and walked into Dealers Room while showing my badge.

Oh fuck, I looked at that list of stupid college classes and saw the one at Belmont that makes every one of these lists. It is one of about 35 possible "first year seminars" that Belmont freshman have to take in their first semester and they are only one credit courses. They are small seminars of 10-12 students and they are intended mostly as discussion sessions to get kids to open up on subjects that are new to them. My son took one on hip-hop music, which he has literally never listened to (he is a music major) and loved it. I can't speak to the other classes on the list, but Belmont really gets a bad rap on this. It is a very conservative Christian college.
Just had to get that off my chest. You may now return to your regular ONT revelry.

I think it is boo-ee in the South. I seem to recall one brother yapping about it---the brother I once threw up the stairs as we were sent to our rooms after fighting over the tv channel (I sort of propelled him upward like a catapult---hey, on kitty thread, why do they call them catspults?). I patiently explained to parents, later, as brother screamed and then I got into trouble...the big wuss as he was not hurt...that this was going on in my head as a physics experiment. Brother moved upward due to:
A depends on its initial velocity.
B depends on the mass of the ball.
C is 9.8 m/s2
D depends on how high you throw it.
E is 0 m/s2
They knew this was not true as I cannot find "x" in the best of times.
My biggest question is why there is a tiger in the kitchen?
The Cat Zeppelin video cracked me up.

You'll understand the confusion that people not from NEPA would have when they would call up to confirm how to spell Archibald and I would say no it's Archbald. But but the person said Archibald and I would just sigh heavily and say I know but it's spelled Archbald.
Speaking of grinders, one of the very very very few things I miss about NEPA is a Pappas original chicken grinder along with cheese fries.

By the By, I spent all last summer getting the yard into at least decent enough shape (it's weedy as hell, but at least I've got 90%+ ground coverage, which is a huge improvement.)
And those little beasts put a hole in, and then after they left that they sat in other parts of the yard and kill them too.

The Battling Boys of Benghazi
( Author unknown )
We're the Battling Boys of Benghazi,
no fame, no glory, no paparazzi.
Just a fiery death in a blazing hell,
defending the country we loved so well.
It wasn't our job, but we answered the call,
fought to the consulate, and scaled the wall.
We pulled twenty countrymen from the jaws of fate,
led them to safety, and stood at the gate.
Just the two of us, and foes by the score,
but we stood fast, to bar the door.
Three calls for reinforcement, but all were denied,
so we fought and we fought, and we fought till we died.
We gave our all for our Uncle Sam,
but Barack Obama didn't give a damn.
Just two dead SEAL's, who carried the load,
no thanks to us--we were just "bumps in the road."

elizabethe, thanks I'll bookmark that and maybe try some. Though I am not sure how predator pee would effect my beagle.
I am thinking about making my beagle smell coffee beans or something before going out to go pee so he doesn't get distracted. The problem is he has to go out on a leash because even though my yard is fenced he can flatten himself and squeeze through the small space at the bottom of the fence. So, it annoys me to be dragged across the yard chasing bunny scent.

alexthechick, the drug deals happen in the parking lot next to the Dairy Queen right out in the open. Since marijuana is legal here now apparently that means everything else goes drug-wise too.
I don't care if men want to be with each other, but I do think that the type of men who meet clandestinely in the woods to give each other blow jobs might not be the most savory of individuals. Especially in this day and age and in this area, it's not like you have to hide your gay lifestyle around these parts. But, I guess it is some sort of thrill for some to do it in the bushes.

We have done our fair share of bunny hunting. Winchester model 12 in 16 guage with full choke and number 4's. Never hunted with a poodle! Stomped brush most of the time. Hunted with beagles occasionally.

I'm sure it's bad. At the same time, reminds me of some of the anti-drug programs of the 1970s. I'd swear some of them were designed by schizophrenics.
There was one anti-drug campaign in particular that I literally could not believe, and I was just 12 years old when I heard of it. It's tagline was, I kid you not:
"It's so good, don't even do it once."

This wasn't hunting, it was just trying to use a more aggressive bigger animal to chase out smaller ones so they'd stop killing my grass

Even after Larry Bird, for the melanin-deficient amongst us, we could still cheer for Jordan, Barkley, Johnson, Olajuwon and Shaq. They were decent, real people.
That Pacers / Pistons brawl was a thugfest and it drove off a lot of fans who can't stomach thuggery - which sucked if you were living in a city which had nothing to do with it, which was most other cities.

I should cook up that essay about the decline and fall of the Umayyad dynasty sometime.
Thrill when Yazid III locks up Walid II's sons in the tower! Chill when Marwan II rebels in their name, and Sulayman bin Hisham has them killed! Scratch your head when none of these names mean a damn thing to you . . . nor to the Muslims, apparently, because the Abbasids rolled in and executed the lot

They do have some sex scenes in sultry foreign languages. Unfortunately the English version has dubbed them with "baa". Doubtless a flaw in the translation.

Mr. Alamogordo got another call today from our friendly local hardware store that also sells ammo and boom sticks. He went and picked up 500 .22 LRs, and about 2 weeks ago I ran to that store after another call and picked up about 600 .22LRs, so I can finally go plinking again.
Nice to live in a small town where they put you on a call list when they get a shipment in.

OK I will change the subject a little here from the Knocks chick.
Looking forward to my anniversary trip with the Mr. this year. We are heading out to AZ last week of June to Flagstaff area for fishing and camping and a Blues and Brews Festival on the 28th.
Fishing and camping before the fest, and hopefully some really good tunes at the fest. Tommy Castro and the Painkillers will be there, and I've seen his band before and they are really fun. Except he doesn't have the sax guy anymore, so that is sad.
But I sure hope catching a few lunker fish will make up for no sax in Tommy's band anymore.

Some of you might know I have a little blog Word Around the Net - every once in a while someone links it here, particularly in the ONT for my "Common Knowledge" posts.
Well there was a problem with my Google account when they changed over to Google Apps this year, and I couldn't log on to renew my blog domain. So its gone dead; if you go to www.wordaroundthenet.com now you get one of those annoying placeholder pages.
Hopefully in about 15 days I'll be able to pick it up again and some bastard at a domain site won't buy it and expect me to pay $150,000 to buy it back. But until then, my blog has basically disappeared. I tried to warn people it might happen, but since the blog is gone, there's nothing to read on it any more.
So I set up my old stored wordpress blog account for my business to echo the blog, I haven't posted on it for a bit because of other stuff going on but its still out there.
I just wanted people to know its still out there and maybe spread the word a bit to the 8 or so people who actually read it.

If Cate in IN is still here -
I bought a nice 20 gauge shotgun not too long ago. It really doesn't "kick" that much, and I had become deadly accurate with it before the terrible boating accident.
And my lovely Da bought hubby and I reloading equip for Christmas, for both the Mr .12 gauge and my .20 gauge.
Again before the terrible boating accident where we lost everything.

chemjeff,
I have a kindle, and have gotten to the point where I am ordering old books on it, because I have a problem with reading. They gave me a "speed reading" course when I was very young, and go through the books way too fast to keep ordering the newest ones on the market, and I am now in the slow time for work so don't have the budget.
It's amazing to go back and reread some of the classics from my youth (which was way before yours I am sure)
But I sure have been enjoying them once again.
I can reread books about 5 times before I get so tired I know every word. so I just wait about 5 - 10 years, and then they are fun again.

We haven't mapped out the trip just yet.
Are you somewhere near a route that we could meet up? Have lunch or adult beverages on the way?
You know where we are coming from, so would we approximate your locale on either route?
We like to drive somewhere one way and back another, to see more, so which way could we meet up with you if you are interested?

Actually I was going to suggest things that would keep your route away from me. Not because I'm anti-social, which I am, but because there's some cool stuff to see a little off the beaten path around here.
Fer' instance, if you have the time and don't mind some light hiking, the "Land of Fire and Ice" off NM 53 is a nice distraction. Visit a volcano and ice cave within a short walk of each other.

A co-worker of mine from the 1990s was related to Tom Dillehay, or at least was an admirer of his (he changed his last name to "Dillehay" when I was there - no, srsly, he did).
The real Dillehay was responsible for overthrowing the "Clovis Theory" on how the New World - which, for humans, really was a new world - was first populated. He had found archaeological evidence for human settlements in the early 10000s BC (Monte Verde), where Clovis material only existed in 13500 BC and later.
A big comet blasting everything in North America *would* explain the crippling of North American populations, and maybe even their emptying-out; whilst in South America there seems to be more genetic diversity and a longer chain of evidence for continuous settlement.

I do sense a certain "creep" of stacked events that which all of us who post thus at the HQ must feel from time to time...MOST noticed since Nov. 2012....
It is more stranger/visceral and infused with a gut feel of a WTF must insert into my OODA LOOP..."DAILY!!" doctrine... compared to 08'.
We are "Knowing this" on an almost 24/7 clip as of late.
Or?......Are we being "Ground down" to except this as the "NEW AND IMPROVED......"Day to Day" functionality of the Kingdom of Barry?
Is this current onslaught of info draped as "Scandals" meant to just "NUMB US DOWN" and make us collective "Feebs." to the true nature of Mr. Jug Ears?
Jus sayin.....

We have bunnies that come in the yard, as well as quail. I have stopped planting the, delicious to rabbits I guess, lilies, and now I leave the peelings of cukes and taters out for them.
Silly Katie the heeler/chihuhua loves to chase those bunnies.
Mr. is not allowed to shoot the quails nor bunnies, at least until I find a good recipe for the bunnies.
In season, tho, we do get some nice dove breasts and hearts to wrap in bacon with cheese, jalapeno or pineapple or whatever for stuffing and mighty tasty!
One must soak in red wine first before putting on the barbie.

We used to have bunnies that would eat miniature rosebushes down to the ground. Put chicken wire around them. The bunnies kept the plants trimmed neatly, nothing outside the wire.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that.
Clovis never made sense when I was in college. The primitive Clovis found in mass quantities in New England and one advanced point site in Alaska. Everything was backwards but nobody wanted to say 'Europeans' got here first.
The Clovis Impact Theory is getting stronger.
Search: "Firestone Younger Dryas Impact"
Survived the first round of critics and the physical evidence keeps getting stronger.

Blanco,
Sound like some good things to do. I would like to see fire and ice in that close of proximity, because sometimes Mr. gets worried about all this gorebull warming stuff. He was raised unfortunately with a (lovely tho) hippy mom and his sis is very very liberal, and sometimes they encourage him in "feeling" too much.
I will email you, if you aren't interested in a mini-moron meetup, that's cool too. I am usually not too "social" either. I will email you for maybe some more interesting things to do on the way.
I think I will actually get about 10 days off total, and Mr. too, and that's not happened for many a year for our vacation schedules. Usually it's he's working or I am on (working) vacation.

The Amerindian (pre-Navajo) genetic signals are all heavily northeast Asian. The main exception is the X2 mitochondrion - and this one is Eurasian, not European. (There's a north African / European X1 mitochondrion, but it didn't reach the Americas.)
So X2 probably tagged along with the other Siberian tribes, via Alaska.
Plus, "Across Atlantic Ice" has the disadvantage of being really hard to test. Maybe impossible. And if it's not testable it's not science.

Rabbits!
Yes, it started this way at my house. Only 2 males, Genghis and Larry, Lope Eared Belgium's I was told, then my son tossed (as a joke) a female rabbit of no name into the "BOY" bunny hutch at his friend's home from which we obtained the original bunnies,....next thing I know, I am the rather dumbstruck owner of 4 additional bunnies PLUS the mother...(which my son will pay for all food and cage cleaning included!!!!) So I type to you all tonight from my (WTF) Bunny Farm.
I would send pictures, but ACE only allows me spell check......for which I am grateful.

I am interested in the inhabiting of the Americas.
I grew up in MN, and a lot of people up there (those skandis don't ya know) really believe the Vikings were there way before Columbus. They take it as a "point of pride" for some reason.
Now, I know there were huge glaciers that overran the land, and I can't believe the skandis wouldn't have stayed around, because that is what their homeland was like, wasn't it?
so, if they could handle that DAMNED cold, why didn't they stay?
OK I know this is way after what you guys are discussing about Clovis and all that, but did the skandis become scaredykats way before now?
Posted by: alamogordo at June 08, 2013 10:26 PM (HUTO5)
Somewhere in America is an institution. At that institution there are a number of people that have been committed, and probably most of them are there voluntarily.
The inmates at the institution have access to the web. Either there is a whacked-out doctor or a nurse/orderly of some type who directs some of the psychotics to the ONT. The reasons could be many -- among them are:
it is really therapeutic / amusing / outright funny / harmless, so who gives a shit / at least it will keep the asshole busy so he won't bug me for a while / or the perennial favorite: "fuck those scumbags on the ONT, anyway, cuz they deserve it."
The psychotics are told what a "conservative" is supposed to be, or how a "conservative" is supposed to think, but that is of little predictive power, because, after all, they are psychotic. So, the inmates post on the ONT for a while. And at a particular time each night the orderlies return them to their rooms so they drop off the thread. Each psychotic will post for a period of some months and then fade away.
Eventually a new psychotic will appear, and repeat virtually identical behavior for a similar period of time and then fade away like the predecessors.
-- end hypothesis.

Click my name in 1004. There is a great deal about new points found and even European DNA in native populations.
Probably an early European group mostly wiped out by the Clovis impact and Asians moving in afterwards. Could be very complex with multiple groups coming from both directions at different times.

Maybe because smallpox from the Conquistadores hadn't yet arrived to spread across the Americas and wipe out 90% of the indigenous population? The Vikings would have run up against some serious competition for resources. While we know the Vikings didn't exactly run away from a good fight, event they would have had their limits.
Of course, this is all speculation on my part.

I suspect they'll do one more firmware release before pulling the plug on support that completely opens it up and lets people do whatever they want, without booting from the microSD slot and thus having all of that 64 GB available for stuff. (My boot setup is off a 64 GB SanDisk microSDXC card. Rakuten has a deal this weekend to get it for under $40.) Potentially the slot can store a lot more but cards over 64 GB are still very pricey.
It doesn't have some of the features of more general tablets, such as front or rear cameras, but the screen resolution (1920x1200) is really nice at the current price. There is no telling how far down the price might go before they run out. They're $150 for the 16 GB right now, though I recommend spending the additional $30 for the 32 GB model.

Well, that is true Blanco,
the people that were here were pretty hard core. I guess I didn't really think that through.
Yes, I grew up in northern MN, and I always thought it was odd that our football team was named the Vikings.
I led a "sheltered" life, away from the Cities ( as they are called, in plural, because there were only 2, and they were also called "twin", I don't know to this day why, because when I lived in St Paul for a few years they were no way, no how twins, but I digress)
I never understood why the Vikings were our mascot, team name, whatever.
Northern MN is mostly immigrants from Italy, Finland, Germany ( but those are mostly southern, for farming), Serbia, skandinavian countries. Then, I got out and "aboot" in the state, and found out there are a lot of people that said hogwash about Columbus.
Then, I moved to El Paso TX, and after that to New Mexico.
And then I "learned" that the Pilgrims were "hogwash", and the first Thanksgiving was in El Paso, way before the Pilgrims.
It's interesting to learn how different areas of the country believe their area is the first to discover a new original Thanksgiving.
What I have LOVED about it all, is that every area in which I have lived has always believed there is a reason for Thanksgiving in this country.
