On Tuesday, they tried to kill me.I am ordinarily at my desk between 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning, in my office on the 54th floor of one of the World Trade Center's towers. Tuesday, I was running late - I stopped to vote in the primary election for mayor, an election that has now been postponed indefinitely. Thank God for petty partisan politics.
...I stopped in a few bars, calling to say I was OK, but I still didn't feel safe, and I kept moving north. In one bar I saw the south tower collapse, and had a sick feeling in my stomach, which increased exponentially when I saw Tower Number One, with my office in it and (so far as I knew) many of the people I work with as well, cave in. Official business hours start at 9:30, but I started reeling off in my head all the lawyers who get in early in the morning, and have for years. I thought of the guy who cleans the coffee machines, someone I barely speak to but see every day, who has to be in at that hour. I was still nervous, and decided not to think about anything but getting out alive.
There's a scene that comes to mind, and I'm placing it in the Lord of the Rings because that's where I remember it, but feel free to let me know if I've mangled it or made it up. Frodo the hobbit has lived all his life in the Shire, where the world of hobbits (short, human-like creatures) revolves around hospitality and particular etiquette and family snobbery and all the silliest little things, silly at least in comparison to the great and dangerous adventure he finds himself embarked on. Aragorn, one of the Men, has been patrolling the area around the Shire for years, warding off invading creatures of all varieties of evil. Frodo asks Aragorn, eventually, whether he isn't frustrated with and contemptuous of hobbits and the small, simple concerns that dominate their existence, when such dangers are all at hand. Aragorn responds that, to the contrary, it is the simpleness and even the pettiness of the hobbits that makes the task worthwhile, because it's proof that he has done his job - kept them so safe and insulated from the horrors all around them that they see no irony, no embarrassment in concerning themselves with such trivial things in such a hazardous world. It has often struck me that you could ask no better description of the role of law enforcement and the military, keeping us so safe that we may while our days on the ups and downs of made-up games.
I think this has been covered here before but just in case it hasn't.
The day after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Steve Buscemi, who worked as a firefighter from 1980-1984, showed up at his old fire station, Engine Company No. 55 in the Little Italy section of New York.For the next week he worked 12-hour shifts, digging through the rubble trying to find the bodies of missing firefighters, all the while refusing to do interviews or have his picture taken.
"It was a privilege to be able to do it," the 45-year-old actor said. "It was great to connect with the firehouse I used to work with and with some of the guys I worked alongside. And it was enormously helpful for me because while I was working, I didn't really think about it as much, feel it as much.
"It wasn't until I stopped that I really felt the full impact of what had happened. It would have been much harder for me to get through it if I hadn't been able to do that."

I'm guessing they get a pass since the rules came into play after the fact? I don't really have an answer to that I guess. I go on what I was taught and what I believe. If you believe in heaven which is taught in the bible then you probably should believe in the part of it where it gives you the path to get in. While this may be true, having priests who's sole commitment to the church (and their flock, especially parish priests) is, IMHO, a good thing.
Of course we need priests in general though, so if this is something that could increase those numbers I may not be opposed (but certainly cautious.)

There's a man who is a member of the Cherokee tribe who is trying to keep custody of his daughter. His ex fiance gave the little girl up for adoption without his knowledge and he's been fighting to raise her ever since he found out.
He was successful at gaining custody, and the girl was returned to him when she was about 18 months old and has lived with him ever since. The adoptive family, however, has been fighting to get her back ever since. She's 4 now, and they have gotten some sort of injunction to get her back to them in North Carolinal.
However, because the father is a member of the Cherokee tribe, he has some extra paternal rights that he otherwise wouldn't because Native Americans have some protection against removing children out of the tribe.
The adoptive family has fought him tooth and nail, and the governors of NC and OK are both working to get the father extradited to NC to get custody to the adoptive paretns.

That's disputed heavily too though. He said he "relinquished his parental rights" (admittedly via text message) but then got upset when he found the kid was being adopted (the mother isn't Cherokee.) Then he claims "well I only meant to her, not someone else."

Even the hunting lodge at my friends farm, so far out you barely get radio, has indoor plumbing.
Well kinda indoor, it's an annex to the house, it's not heated or cooled, but it's walled in and there's a flush toilet and shower (and electricity.)

@45 @15, I'm astonished a pope is saying this, but I personally agree. Case in point is my MIL, the most gentle, caring, truly good hearted person I know. She is Hindu. Can't imagine God would bar her from Heaven just because she prayed to him using a different name. No, that's not what Scripture teaches but it's common sense. JMO.

Listening to all the talk about Obama's speech last night, it occurred to me that he seems to have been trying to build the Frankenstein's Monster version of a speech. Put something in for group X, something in for group Y, copy some of what Dubya said because he was successful and obviously knew how to drum up war support, and voila! It's alive!
Or not, as the case may be. Because Obama fails to understand why those individual elements all work the way that they do, and the total ended up being noticeably less than the sum of its parts.

Listening to some of the things the new Pope says, I am reminded of the Episcopal church from about 8 years ago. I was under the impression the new Pope was supposed to be more traditional and conservative. But, he doesn't seem that way in some of the statements he makes.
If he decides to give a benediction without using the word "God" the transition to Episcopal church will be complete.

You can find plenty of rednecks, hillbillies and all that other shit he talked about in rural NY where I grew up. You go 30 miles outside Albany in almost any direction and NY suddenly don't look like "New York" (or at least the stereotypes people have of it) anymore.
Head towards the MA/VT border out around New Lebanon and shit gets pretty damn Ozarky once you're off the main drag. There's still some cribs out there up in the mountains ain't got indoor plumbing, and any deer wandering through the yard is fair game in season or not.

I thought Tsoro's comment above was apt - this is a problem I have had with Christian theology since I was a kid and a big part of the reason why I walked away. I cannot seem to reconcile the idea that the vast majority of people who have ever lived on this planet are condemned to burn in hell with the notion that God is love. I have great respect for people's faith, and have first hand experience with the value of such, but it doesn't work for me ... I work with another guy in my lab who's English (not ESL) is worse than mine. I try to only correct him when nobody else is around. Since I know he's a smart guy but people (our customers) will think less of his results if he misspeaks. Though with the kids coming out of college now this is becoming less of a problem.

Although it's possible to BE a language bully, there's often another dynamic going on: Asperger Syndrome, a symptom of which is the compulsion to correct; however, it DOES NOT come from a desire to show one's superiority but merely to set something right. It's not at all personal.
For Aspies, correcting someone's grammar is no different from picking up a pencil that someone accidentally dropped and handing it to them. Furthermore ASPIES DON'T MIND BEING CORRECTED, because they WANT to know whether their info is bad.
And that ends up being one of the difficulties between Aspies and neurotypicals, because the Aspie is just picking a piece of lint off your shoulder, but the neurotypical takes it as an act of aggression.
(I'm not a full-blown Aspie, but I have a few of the tics, and the compulsion to correct is one of them.)
Case in point: I spent a week taking photos of wildflowers in Zion National Park. I posted them to Flickr and attempted to identify them using a guide that I'd bought in the park.
Within hours of posting the photos, someone had come along and corrected some of my identifications:

But rather than be offended by the guy's temerity, I was delighted—first, that someone had paid attention to my stuff, but also that I was getting some valuable information that I couldn't have gotten any other way. Turns out the guy maintains the Utah Rare Plant Database and so he knows his stuff. (No doubt he's on the Aspie spectrum because you'd have to be to compile such meticulous information.)
I was relating this story to my sister, who would have found it obnoxious to be corrected.
So, if a nerd person corrects you, and there's no smirk on his face, don't take it personally — he's offering you something he himself values: the right answer.

FWIW i think they forget that the people who died were from every walk of life and more than likely, people just like them. In fact, it could have been them on a different day. My dad had an '02 Cat and I talked him into putting schmoil-overs and a Felinetech Turbonator on it - man I could drift that thing 2 or 3 feet easily, talk about a pussy wagon ...
Eventually I talked him into trading it in for 167 BMW E30's, much better ...

i seriously had neighbors like that when i first moved into this place. the Daughter and her meth cooking husband were always fighting and the cops kept coming and taking away kids and breaking up fights. they were so foul mothed and used to fight in their back yard right where the horses in the barn could see them. i think the horses were fairly entertained by their Antics though i was not, especially my stallion. My parents used to refer to it all as "Lucky's Swearing Lessons." One time they even threw a Toaster though the kitchen window!

Coothie, Uncle Horse's Neice decided to remodel her pen and tore off one of the plywood safety panels i had secured to the welded wire fence of her run. I have not been well, but Grim helped me fix the stall, and in record time. Got the panel back up. Put her back to bed. The kitties are all in fine fettle but upset that i have been sick lately and unable to hang out and pay attention to them all day like they prefer. i did have a good day with them on Monday where i feel asleep out in the shade in Uncle Horse's run under the big tree and woke up covered in cat. he was gaurding us, and i was blanketed in kitty. kinda nice, when you have been feeling bad.

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't been well, but pleased that Uncle Horse knew the right medicine. Niece Horse certainly seems the willful sort, but I'm sure that will improve over time under your tutelage.
As far as goats are concerned, I was thinking she might have rustled some from the neighbor -- given her history, and environmental-modification tendencies.

I got thrown out of a rental house once because of a goat. Damn thing got into the landlords pickup and ate the covers off his sun visors. Whats worse is it wasn't even my damn goat, it belonged to a friend of the wife who was moving and didn't have a place for it.
The mexicans driving by had a place for it though...
And now I'm out for the evening, back to work. Later again roonz and roonettez!
