The Most Surprising Things About America, According To An Indian International Student
In our day to day lives there are assumptions and expectations so deeply embedded in American society that we don't even recognize them as such - the cultural waters that we swim in without any awareness. So it's always interesting to hear the observations of a foreigner who's lived here long enough to get past the easy superficial observations but not so long that they've stopped noticing the water.
And Aniruddh Chaturvedi who came from Mumbai to study computer science at Carnegie Mellon University and interned last summer in Silicon Valley is that guy.
And in his view these are some of the most surprising things about the US:
- Nobody talks about grades here.
- US Flag displayed everywhere: I was surprised to see that the US flag is displayed in schools, on rooftops of houses, etc. India has very strict rules governing the display and use of the national flag. Also, something that struck out to me was how it was completely normal to wear the US flag or a US flag-like pattern as a bikini.
- Strong ethics - everyone has a lot of integrity. If someone cannot submit their completed assignment in time, they will turn in the assignment incomplete rather than asking for answers at the last minute. People take pride in their hard work and usually do not cheat. This is different from students from India and China as well as back home in India, where everyone collaborates to the extent that it can be categorized as cheating.
- Rich people are thin/ well maintained, poor people are fat. This stems from the fact that cheap food is fatty, rich people don't eat cheap food - they tend to eat either home-cooked food which is expensive or eat at expensive / healthy places. Unfortunately, it is expensive to be healthy in America.
- An almost-classless society: I've noticed that most Americans roughly have the same standard of living. Everybody has access to ample food, everybody shops at the same supermarkets, malls, stores, etc. I've seen plumbers, construction workers and janitors driving their own sedans, which was quite difficult for me to digest at first since I came from a country where construction workers and plumbers lived hand to mouth.

- Girls are not very promiscuous, contrary to most Hollywood films
"Liberals pick and choose their discriminations. Financial, bureaucratic, and academic distinctions are acceptable, while natural and traditional ones are not. You can choose a Yale man over a Harvard man-the schools are a bit different, so their products may differ-but not a Yale man over a Yale woman. Engineers can earn more than janitors, and Chinese-Americans than the Scotch-Irish, but if schools discipline blacks more than whites, that is a gap that must be closed.
The idea, it seems, is that there is something odd and irrelevant about distinctions such as sex, family, kinship, culture, and religion that makes it wrong for them to have material consequences, unless the consequences disrupt the effect of such distinctions in general. People seem to think the principle is obvious, so it is never explained, but the idea seems to be that the informal social hierarchies and the traditional patterns of conduct and belief that related to them have no legitimate functions. We should, it appears, carry on our lives exclusively through relationships that are either strictly private and idiosyncratic or contractual and bureaucratic."

The Unhappy Traveling Salesman Problem
The classic Computer Science Travelling Salesman Problem is NP-style hard. And it's even harder when you have to worry whether the salesman is happy or not.
People are also emotional, and it turns out an unhappy truck driver can be trouble. Modern routing models incorporate whether a truck driver is happy or not -- something he may not know about himself.

Tractors can be stored anywhere, humans like to go home at night. "I said we're going to need a file with 2,000 rules. Trucks are simple; drivers are complicated."

Holy shit. I am at a loss for words - this may be the most badass movie of all time. The action is relentless, gritty, and filmed with a flair of genius. This is a shining example of the Italian crime cinema genre known as poliziotteschi. But don't shy away because it's a foreign taste; this has the muscle to stand up to any American crime film. Just as the Spaghetti Western was Italy's answer to the American cowboy movie, the poliziotteschi is their answer to the American crime drama.
Tarantino used Woody Strode and Henry Silva (above) as the inspiration for the Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta characters in Pulp Fiction. Plus, Femi Benussi gets naked, there's prostitutes to rough up, heroin to sell, and lots of scantily clad hippies dancing. The whole thing is like a frantic fever dream; it just doesn't let up, and manages to maintain a state of "kick assery" the duration of the film.
Okay now I gotta track down and watch this oeuvre de badassery. The good news is that there's a torrent for it.

I read a book in the early 1990s about how bad the sun is for your skin, and it gives you wrinkles, etc. I have worn an SPF 30 every day since then. If I am going out later in the day when itÂ’s almost dark out I still put it on as part of my routine.
Right now I look bad because I have been stressed out about my brother and lost at least 7 pounds. I donÂ’t weigh much to start with.

I have to fix something minor and can get 75% off up to $2,000 for
insulation in there.
There is a light wooden door that leads out to the back porch. What
kind of door would really block the cold from coming in? Obviously I
know nothing about doors, etc.

If you're going to be doing insulation work yourself, you can pay a couple of extra bucks and get encapsulated batts -- which leads to far less exposure to raw fiberglass.

That describes me. I've dated a couple of white guys in the past and suspect if I ever get married, it will be to one.
But I guess actually leaving my house and caring about getting hitched would make things easier.

A lot of the problem with doors is leakage at the edges. Good seals help tons. Adding a storm door to a crappy door will help a lot too.

A good exterior door, installed properly with a storm door, or better two doors installed as an air lock. Do you use the door often - if not walling it off is an option.

Most of the stuff that gets blown into the walls or attic eventually settles, leaving you with a wall that is 2/3 insulated.

Maybe I'm just being an ass here, or maybe it's just that most teenage moms I know/know of end up going the route of the "trying to live on minimum wage" story up there, but having kids at 15/16 just seems to me to be a poor choice.
I know that way back when girls married/had kids young, but that hasn't really been the norm for a couple of decades now. Somehow I don't think this 34 year old grandfather (who, BTW, molested his 16yo grandchild) would be in the same class of folks as your beloved aunt.
And IMO they should put him in general pop. Save the taxpayers a few bucks on his "life" sentence.

I got carded a couple weeks ago buying Copenhagen. I'm 51 but it was a trainee with the boss standing there. It was fun though I got my ID out as the boss was saying no you don't have to go that far above 18. I got a kick out of it and told her so cause she looked embarrassed.

I have never in my life seen refried bean dip in a Mexican restaurant. Salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole -- sure. Refried beans -- sure. Refried bean dip? -- never. Does it come in a can? I found five layer dip, spinach dip, ranch dip, and guacamole, but not "bean dip". As you can probably tell, I'm not much into it myself, but am supposed to provide some.

I learned early always guess low if you are asked a woman's age. We had an intern in our lab once who guessed 10yrs high and I got to see the wisdom in that practice. Though we knew how dumb this engineering student was since he asked us "how do you calculate the MPG for your car?"

A modern, pre-hung solid core, exterior grade door. You'll also want one that has an extended kickplate for the deadbolt. The pre-hung part is important, I'm guessing a big part of your draft problem is the door frame/jamb being old.

He says the worst problem is that they kill bats. Now, you say wait, bats have echolocation and should be OK. Turns out they have no problem missing the blades, but the turbulence crushes their lungs as they pass through.
Bats are important, they eat a lot of insects like mosquitos.
And that's just for starters, Wind Farms are nasty.

Some dryer vent through-wall fittings have a flapper valve in them that is supposed to stop cold outside air from entering when the dryer is off. But they are rarely very air-tight. Also, if an air-using appliance like a furnace is located in the same area, there will be a suction applied to the dryer vent. Modern furnace installs call for two to four inch "combustion air" vent running from outside to the furnace. Older homes like CarolT's often didn't have that, but it would be an easy thing to add.

Came to the conclusion that the reason things get rowdy here is an offshoot of the current situation our country is in.
Even up here in my rural 2x4 area, there is an undercurrent of unease that is quick to surface. As if no one is really sure of what's ahead, if the job will REALLY last--if there's a future for America or not.
Almost a tangible feeling. Very unsettling, never dealt with this before.
Anyway, that's my report.

Today I get a strong 1978 vibe even though I was a wee lad at the time.
Mostly I get a feeling of the same kind of frustration and sense of powerlessness burbling beneath the surface that I vaguely recall from back then as if everything was in a minor key but no one realized it. Even when things were going okay there was still a sense that as a nation we were unmoored and drifting towards bad things. And there was nothing you could do about it.

The reason I was asking was probably because I'm fascinated with East Africa. I may never actually go there, because of the profound discomfort I have for the concept of "things which actually evolved to eat humans" -- as opposed to the great multitude of things in the world who were only introduced to humans recently. I know quite a bit less about West Africa.
When you say, "I'm Nigerian", were you born there? Do you currently hold Nigerian citizenship? Is your family there?

Two years ago in VPK, the boy with the behavior problems declared to my wife that my daughter was "beautiful and right about everything".
Last year in Kindergarten, there was some boy she had a crush on. Every pic of her doing school stuff, there he was.
This year.....my wife dropped her off for school, two boys who were walking in saw her get out of the van, yelled her name, waited till she caught up to them and then walked with her to class. One boy to each side, nodding and listening while she talked.

Ex wife had scoliosis, wore a brace from 10 all the way up to her early 20s (and later if the back started bothering her. She finally got the surgery done when she was in her late 40's when it got to the point where she couldn't breathe right.

I went to ID after nuke school in FL. Left Orlando wearing shorts on 23 Dec '83. My parents were watching the weather and talked me out of driving to ID. Flew in to Idaho Falls first week of Jan '84, temp was -27 F and everybody said "You missed the cold snap" in this real cheery voice. Thought I would hate the place, but great memories.

You've spent 16 years here, and so you've seen what people think is normal here -- meat comes in plastic trays with plastic wrap, milk comes in cartons, whipped cream comes in pressurized cans, people work 40 hours a week for full time, DUI is rare and severely punished....but these are not universal norms, they're specific to the US. I was looking for something that, knowing what you know today, would be the most foreign, most un-US experience you had -- while it was probably perfectly natural thing at the time and everybody still does it there now.
I had a woman from Vietnam working for me one time, and she answered the question by laughing and saying how much she had been a rebellious kid -- she would climb up on the roof of one of the houses in her village and run along, jumping from one to another (sort of an early parkour, come to think of it). It didn't really answer the question, exactly, so much as show me a side of her I hadn't really known. It's pretty much a myth (a leftist created one more than anything) that good food is more expensive than junk and fast food. That's only true if the alternative is pricey trendy orangic and Whole Foods crap or the "locavore" market which is for trendy lefties. That may be the way it is in the elite leftist haunts, actually.
But in the real world, going to the grocery store and cooking is still cheaper than McDonald's. THe problem is the cooking. Boobus Americanus Fatassibus, the typical LIV type, doesn't want to cook. And by cooking, I don't mean anything fancy, just heating and boiling and the basics. (If you look at cost per calorie, then you might have an argument for cheaper fast food, but the typical lard ass needs cheap calories like a drunk needs cheap alcohol)
Basically, after reading a bunch of crap and seeing some results, the problem is highly processed, "fast" (high glycemic load) carbs (and perhaps the the "engineered" saturated fat/oils). When did we start getting fat? After this stuff became a big part of our diet.
There's some recent studies out that bear this out. Basically, the food pyramid our betters in government has been pushing is a bunch of crap.

That is one of the things that we here in the US just can't normally imagine. When we lose power, the world comes to an end. Going to places where power is not reliable / nonexistant is a real eye-opener. Even though I know how well we have it here, I was not prepared for my first visit to Haiti. The main town I went to was getting its first powerline strung while I was there.

So I'd say my life probably wasn't what you imagined.
I went to a nice private elementary school and was shocked when I got into my govt high school, which looked like what you guys would expect.
I'll say my biggest culture shock here was seeing women smoking openly when I came for college. In Nigeria, women rarely smoke and those who do so in public are considered to be, let's just say, not so nice.
Oh, we also don't have a constant electricity supply. In fact, where we live now, they sometimes go for days with no power or perhaps a few hours of power. (Run by the govt, of course.) So there are generators everywhere.

Having done a stint a McD's it wouldn't be too hard to mechanize pretty much all of it.
Heck already a crew of decent workers can run a store that does $800 or so and hour during lunch rush with a skeleton staff of...(Does math in head) 5-6.
Honestly with a few tweaks you could probably get that even lower.

After I had my right hip replaced (rheumatoid arthritis -- wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy), I decided it wouldn't be much better for the wear and tear on the new hip and the other joints that aren't doing so hot to get some weight off.
I decided low card was the way to go (search on that and read about it). I don't think you need to go all the way to "ketogenic" (but that will get the weight off fast), but just get rid of the fast carbs. It is working, but slowly for me.
FOr cooking I (re-)discovered a tool my grandmother and mother in her younger days used all the time: pressure cooker. I've got a total of three of them now (not the fancy plug-in kind -- those things are lower pressure and too expensive, just the regular stove top kind), and sometimes use all three at once.
That will save a lot of time, believe me, but I learned with amusement that a lot of the Boobus Americanus DemoLIVibus are scared of 'em. The hissing noise makes them scared and they haven't learned enough basic mechanical, etc knowledge to understand what's going on and what danger signs to watch for (which are rare, of course).

In addition to the points you made (glycemic carbs -- which would also include carbs without accompanying fiber -- and engineered oils/fats), there is also a stunning lack of diversity in modern diets. As an example, there are 70 species of bananas.....but, even if you've been eating 'em all your life, you've likely only had one variety of one species -- the "Cavendish". There are 7500 varieties of apples -- how many have you had? You may have had "whole wheat" bread. -- ever had any with barley? spelt? Einkorn? Emmer? Of the thousands of edible plants out there, most of us will never consume more than the 150 commonly available in the supermarket.

Yep, a good argument that struck me goes like this: 100 calories/day translates to about 10 lbs/year -- roughly. If you were off by just 100 calories a day, you'd either gain or loose 10 lbs in a year. So to maintain a given weight, which we all do, we've got to regulate our caloric intake to a good deal less than 100 calories per day.
Try to do that manually. You have to be weighing everything you shoved into your piehole and carefully tracking your activity levels. None of us could do that outside a controlled scientific enivornment.
Yet we do it. So it becomes obvious that we've got a pretty built-in feedback caloric intake system to maintain our weight. It's automatic, we don't even think about it.
So it's obvious that, to become lardassed, something must screw that up (and understanding there is a variation and distribution of the normal set point for each individual) and upregulate the hell of it.
What the evidence is showing (and will take our elite betters a while to admit) is that is the fast carb, processed crap that is doing it.

We evolved with extremely limited diets. Most people lived their whole life with a relative few berries, meats and other plants.
Most of the varieties we talk about didn't exist until recently, and most fruits and vegetables we have access to are relatively modern - their ancestors are *barely* edible and certainly not the lush and rich things we've hybridized.
So if we evolved without them, why would we *need* them now?
I think part of the explanation for what people see as an increase in allergies (probably not a real change) is travel, as well as access to a greater variety of food than we've ever had before.

It well could be our little gut buggies are inducing us to eat what they like (via output "signal" chemicals that affect our system). It was absolutely fascinating. I think there was a study with lab mice, bred in a sterile enviroment where they could control the gut flora and all the bacterial composition, and they showed some type of gut bacteria did cause the mice to become fatter.
However, what you eat affects the gut flora balance too. So they can show that morbidly obese people have a different flora composition, that the flora likely do a play a role in the fat storage/burning process and appeite, but the causation chain is bit murkier.
So, perhaps we change our diets thanks to the modern highly processed industry that evolved (and did a lot of good things to make food plentiful, of course and it must be stressed to refute the "all coporate = evil" lefty nonsense), and our gut flora sort of changed and evolved in the process.
About the gut worms/parasites: That's something I've heard about, but don't know enough to know what I think.
Someone mentioned allergies above, and there's some argument I remember that the intestinal worms may actually "train" the immune system not to overreact (as a way of protecting itself against the human immune system). We evolved with them, and may need that effect as well.

Yep, I looked it up. C-section babies are 5 times more likely to develop allergies than normal. There is also a statistically significant link with autism and C-section births, although there is no proof of direct link, perhaps some other common factor.

When I was little single digit age kid, I loved dirt and mud, and would run when I was told is was bath time. That was before the stinking sweat glands that turn on during puberty were activated, of course. And my hair and skin didn't get oily and I could days and days without a bath. Not a problem for a small child.
But now they get hypercleaning with antimicrobial soaps and all that.

They tend to go solely by visual inspection because it would take far too long to verify the readability of the discs. More often than not they're fine, so if I can minimize the blemish it should pass muster. If not, oh well, take it to other less convenient venues.

I did read it, but it was kinda late and after some dubious meat loaf and mashed pertaters and my first dose of celebrex. Ever read those side effects?
I thought the Indian kid was saying the girls here were not as promiscuous as Hollywood portrayed them. Is that not what he said? I pictured him as like the '2 wild and crazy guys' from SNL, back when SNL was sorta funny. You know, kinda expecting girls to kick off their panties and spread their legs. Like in the bushes on the way home. Sorta.

Roast + potatoes + carrots + gravy + home made buns to feed 6 people = $20.00
The same from McDonalds: $30.00 and no left overs.
