Obama: Hey It's Just Style Points
President Obama says a tumultuous month as commander in chief, when his policy toward Syria took a number of unexpected turns, may not have looked "smooth and disciplined and linear," but it's working.
"I'm less concerned about style points. I'm much more concerned with getting the policy right," Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos in an exclusive interview on "This Week."
Jonathon Tobin: No You Lost More Than Just Style Points in Syria
By demonstrating his lack of will to act on what he has rightly labeled a human-rights catastrophe, President Obama has not only secured the Russian base in Syria; he has sent the region a signal that the U.S. is a paper tiger.
...Had President Obama not played Hamlet about acting on his own authority to strike Syria none of this needed to happen. Several months ago the Russians feared they were about to lose the last vestige of their once-formidable sphere of influence in the region as Assad tottered. Now they are back in business and Assad is even deeper in their debt than before. Bolstered by victory in Syria, Iran also has good reason to be more confident about stalling or even defying the West on the nuclear issue. All this is something Obama handed to them free of charge on a silver platter. That isn't "style" Mr. President; it's substance. And the consequences will be suffered by the people of Syria, regional allies like Israel, and an American people who, despite their justified worries about trusting Obama with military force in Syria, will soon realize that American prestige and influence has never been so low since Jimmy Carter sat in the White House.
News You Can Use: How to Turn Fruit Juice into Cheap Homemade Booze
Remembering Meghan McCain's Dirty Sexy Politics
And Leon H. Wolf's brutal, disemboweling of a book review. It's hard to believe that it's been two years already.
On June 20, 2002, the United States Supreme Court decreed, in the case of Atkins v. Virginia, that the mildly mentally retarded were categorically exempt from capital punishment, reasoning that fully functional adults of diminished mental capacity were as a matter of law not as culpable for their acts. Writing eloquently in dissent, Justice Scalia drew a sharp distinction between the severely mentally retarded (who are truly not responsible for their actions), and the merely stupid (the category into which Mr. Atkins undoubtedly fell). Scalia argued forcefully that, with respect to the merely stupid, at least sometimes they deserve to be punished for their antisocial and destructive behavior. This article, of course, is not about capital punishment. It is a book review of Dirty, Sexy Politics by Meghan McCain. However, the above discussion is relevant because I initially had reservations about writing this book review at all. After all, it is clear to everyone who has read Meghan McCain's twitter feed, her "articles" on The Daily Beast, or her ill-fated campaign blog that Meghan is not a paragon of clear reasoning, exemplar of familiarity with facts, nor a model of English language expertise. And after subjecting myself to 194 continuous pages of her "writing," it became clear that none of the above-described works truly plumbed the depths of mental vacuity in which Ms. McCain aimlessly and cluelessly drifts.
This presented a dilemma.
It is impossible to read Dirty, Sexy Politics and come away with the impression that you have read anything other than the completely unedited ramblings of an idiot. This being a professional website for which I have a great deal of respect, I searched for a more eloquent or gentle way to accurately phrase the previous sentence - but could not find one.
And of course as ever Meghan fails upwards with a new TV show:
This is the series' structure: In each episode McCain learns something. As the show's title promises, the series is educating her and, by extension, Pivot's hoped-for young audience. A protagonist learning alongside the viewers is an effective storytelling technique, but only if there's a higher, already educated intelligence operating off screen. On camera, it's great to ask questions and play the naif, so long as someone off-camera knows where all those questions lead. Raising McCain doesn't seem to have that guiding intelligence.
OMG: The Scourge of Unregulated Dinner Parties
Inviting strangers into your home and feeding them must be limited and controlled by the government or else society will crumble!
The diners are a mix of New Yorkers and tourists. CBS 2's undercover cameras captured one experience - eight people who didn't know each other eating a meal in a stranger's home. That hostess, Naama Shafi, writes about food but is not a chef. [Reporter Tamara] Leitner found her through a website, which connects amateur foodies and professional chefs in 20 different countries with people who want unique dining experiences.
Clandestine dinner parties like the one Leitner attended have become more common in New York City. And insiders told Leitner they are completely unregulated.
Beware the Invasion of Boltzmann Brains
I wasn't even aware this was a threat:
A Boltzmann brain is a hypothesized self-aware entity which arises due to random fluctuations out of a state of chaos.
But not to worry the Higgs boson is likely to destroy us before the Boltzmann Brains.

Bad Idea #297: Rapist Prisoner, Female Therapist Do 'Reintegration' Therapy Alone in Woods
The therapist is now dead and the prisoner is on the run.
A man-hunt is underway in Switzerland after the body of a Swiss therapist was found dead in the woods in Switzerland just hours after she had escorted a convict on a reintegration to society session.Adeline Morel, a 34-year-old mother and therapist, went missing with Fabrice Anthamatten, 39, yesterday.
Her body was hidden in a bag in the woods in Versoix near the Swiss city.
Anthamatten had been charged with rapes going back more than 10 years.
French-born Anthamatten was serving out his sentence at Geneva's Champ-Dollon prison - he was convicted in both France and Switzerland on rape charges dating back as far as 2001.
Back then he was given a five-year sentence for rape and in 2003 he was given another 15 years.
The pair failed to show up for an equestrian therapy session scheduled for yesterday morning.
Heh: American 'Jihadi Rapper' Killed by Fellow Jihadists
The son of a Syrian Muslim father and a Baptist mother, who he once described as a "typical Southern protestant girl", Amriki came to international prominence when he posted a series of Youtube videos in which he rapped about jihad.
Mechanical Gears Seen in Nature For the First Time
Commenter slumber_j points to this New Yorker cartoon about "The subtext of all tattoos:" "Ask me about my parents' divorce."
A related subtext might be: "I come from a long line of rash decisionmakers." On women, tattoos often seem to imply: "Pay attention to me because I, obviously, make poor choices, so you might get lucky."

This weekend, my wife had a dance workshop down at Wilmington, NC and I tagged along with her, and our son. Today before we left, we got to spend some time at the beach, which we haven't had done this year. We also got to see the NC contingent of the Freedom Riders coming back from DC for the 9/11 ride. They had police and fire fighters escorting them downtown. It took like 15-20 minutes for all of them to ride past us! That's a lot of bikers!
And, for BC and the other morons:

Heh, homemade cider.
Meh, they made a mess by not leaving enough room for the fermentation. I make a Graff cider that is pretty good with 4gal of apple juice, 0.5lb steeped crystal malt and 3lbs dme. (half amber, half pale.)
Nice tart taste, crisp and clean. Dry as hell though,

Tough to instruct against what the pros are doing. It really makes me mad. There is a technique to tackling that has done missing from the pro game.... to it's detriment I believe.

The biggest challenge being that kids see this shit on TV and emulate it. Putting the hat down and launching off both legs into the opposing player like that dumbass on my Redskins did twice today...the second time hurting himself, duh. If the NFL would really punish these hits harshly (not just cash penalties but game suspensions) it might stop reduce these kinds of hits. But TruckMonkey's suggestion to go back to leather helmets with no facemask is a great solution.

Underground dinner parties aren't just people inviting friends over for dinner. They are usually random strangers invited to someone's house and they charge a lot of money for the meal and the meals are cooked by professional chefs. At least here they are.
I don't know, food trucks annoy me more. But I understand that in this economy it is cheaper for chefs to get a food truck and they do have to meet minimum health department standards so I guess I need to get over the whole "roach coach" idea. I have had awesome food out of food trucks here. gourmet grilled cheese. meat pies. lumpia.

"The subtext of all tattoos:" "Ask me about my parents' divorce."
My brothers (Thing1 and Thing2) and I are all inked. Our parents were happily married for 45yrs when my mom passed away. Hubbymayhem? Inked, parents happily married until death parted them.
"On women, tattoos often seem to imply: "Pay attention to me because I, obviously, make poor choices, so you might get lucky."
Ummmm........ Nope! Only been with 2 men ever. I married both of them. Lost one to cancer when we were both 30yrs old. 6yrs of lonesome later, I met, fell for, and married hubbymayhem. No hookups or one nite stands, not slutting around. Only let this feller close when I was certain he could and would love my son like his own.

My dad has been bitching about poor tackling for years. I also remember being in junior high football and in the locker room was a very big poster saying don't lead with your head. If the NFL were actually serious they would make things much more strict with regards to tackling, and the fines and penalties they hand out. Will never happen. And that is also why guys are able to break 3-4 "tackles" during a play.

Raymond Loewy, who'd know, called Russian limos "Drakcap".
Sickening, before WWII Packard was one of the most beautiful cars in the world. They parked with the Deusies; Cads pulled over for them to pass, and had to wave first. And Packard made the PT boat engines, most of the Merlins, and the first diesel airplane. They just couldn't build a small car.
Once fenders became part of the bodywork, a bathtub Nash looked good by comparison. Front end looked like a cartoon face of "not being able to make up your mind." Right at the end, the Caribbean was sharp, but had (again, Loewy) way too much grille. Torsion bar suspension, terrific interior, v.good (but, natch, heavy) V8 engine.
After the "merger," the Packard version of the Hawk was something you'd never forget. One way or the other.

Was tooling through a fascinating web site earlier named English Russia.
It's a blog chronicling all things Russian. They have archives going back to the dissolution of the USSR.
One of the most interesting things is the number of military bases that were absolutely abandoned--as in literally walked away from.
There are pics of fighters that were front line at the time, simply sitting on concrete runways, deteriorating. No effort at all made for preservation. Along with trucks, barracks, etc just rotting away. I had NO idea they had so much stuff.

We didn't get the memo until too late to arrange going. Planning on going next yr. The media (spit) just straight up ignored it. And the traffic cams? Holy shit! Not one fucking bike in sight on the cams. One showed the same fucking truck making the same turn over and over and another showed snow on the ground.
One of the commenters on the FB page said she called her congress critter office and asked the drone on the phone if they heard the bikes and the drone said "Oh yeah we....uhh no! No! We don't know what you're talking about".
Even Fox news pretty much ignored the whole thing. Did a 30 second blurb about it and didn't even mention the FACT that even the D.C. police said there were between 1.0 and 1.2 MILLION bikes there.
Someone mobilized 1.2 MILLION patriots to march on D.C. in less than a month and the damned media shut down any talk about it. Anyone who thinks the media is NOT the biggest reason why we keep losing elections needs to think again.

I tell phlebotomists, when I'm breaking 'em in -- just imagine that I'm sitting here, and you're going to place a live angry rattlesnake on my chest. Then, when you're done, you're going to pick him up and carry him off. If you get tempted to tell me about how it won't hurt and how little I'll feel the needle, just try telling someone with that snake on his chest how the rattlesnake hardly weighs anything and is hardly noticeable.
That said, I've seen some nice tats (which I don't like to think about how they got there) and I've seen some wildly inappropriate ones. As mentioned above, a small bass clef on the bass side seemed appropriate and amusing.

Don't know the Disney days yet -- it'll be somewhere between 11/4 and 11/11. I've got family down there, I grew up and went to school down there, there's Disney in the works, there's a D23 special Disney Studio tour that the BH has in the works, she's got a VP of Sales for her company down that way who she's thinking of having dinner with, she's thinking of the Reagan Library......so it's, er, somewhat fluid at present. I'd expect it to gel in early October.
Incidentally, she's off to NC again in less than a week, so we're focused more on nearer perils.

I think we'll see tiny MEMs implants, similar to the tech used in Mirasol displays, that will act as pixels that can change color on demand. Going to a formal occasion? Make the color match your skin. Going to a birthday party? Program your skin to display an animated message wishing the guest of honor well. When you can receive a text message to be displayed on your forearm, why bother with a smart watch bonded to the phone in your pocket?
A lot of the tech is already there and research into medical diagnostics is bringing a lot of it together. The first product will be for practical use but the cosmetic will soon follow.

My mom used to be a professor of mathematics, so she was in academia and would do all the academic stuff. This included being on the textbook committee for her school system for what we now call STEM.....so, bathroom reading when I was a kid tended to be stacks of "evaluation copies" of science texts.
I understand that most of y'all haven't seen more than one science text at a time, but I can tell you that there are probably more similarities than differences....and one similarity is that the "phases of matter" section of a physics textbook always uses stock photos of snowflakes, blown up to be about 3" across.
Of course, when you're an impressionable kid, you start thinking....."all those photos with those snowflakes......jeebus, that's the size of those widgets Kwai-Chang Caine is chuckin' in the intro!" and you start getting a bit worried that being caught in a snowstorm would be getting pelted by shuriken of ice coming out of the sky. Of course, when you woke up to find snow on the ground, it didn't look anything like that.....but, then, it was also half-melted.
Maybe those 3" snow crystals shattered when they hit.....but, if you looked up at the wrong time, one could spear your eyeball on a spike. If your had was bare, you might even lose a finger!
As I got older and became more familiar with The Lands Beyond The Mountains, I understood that my concerns might be a bit.....overwrought. But I'm still a little twitchy at the thought.

The problem is not the merged or failed ones....it's that you can't start a new one, because you'd have to buy your way in to the massive government/labor complex to get it certified as road-worthy. Last new car company (besides Tesla, which is another progressive boondoggle) that I can recall in the US was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cl%C3%A9net_Coachworks (now defunct).
Should be that you can put any damned thing on a public road so long as it produces little danger to others (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRfE9XnQ-5U ) -- and that should include "in quantity" and "for sale".

I saw snow as a kid because we went to higher altitude places like Fraser Park. But the first time I ever saw snow falling was my first time in New York City, in 2000. I was only there for about a day while waiting for a flight to Amsterdam. We would be there for a week then drive to Hanover, Germany for CeBIT.
I got back to NYC later that year for some work at PC Expo. We went to the top of the WTC, little knowing how significant the experience would become.
The first time I ever saw snow fall where I was living was two years ago, here in Castaic. It was the first time snow had fallen here since 1948, IIRC.

http://cleantechnica.com/2013/08/19/top-electric-car-cities-us/
Electric cars are a tradeoff between burning liquid fuels relatively cleanly in the car, and burning solid fuels semi-cleanly a long way away -- then wasting most of the energy heating up transmission lines for the gazillion miles in-between the powerplant and the charger, then wasting another batch in battery technology. If the idiots in government would get out of the way, it'd be cheaper, easier, and more environmentally-friendly to turn coal into gasoline or diesel and truck it to conventional filling stations.
But in five trendy cities, people are ordering more Teslas than the factory can produce. ***Note to self: get way, way, way-the-fuck away from these cities before the brownouts start.***

Tesla is profitable because of the credits and subsidies they get courtesy of the taxpayers
It also helps that they don't have to hire design teams since it's identical to the Maserati Quatroporto

Anyway, one year JCA had a winter camp. I cannot recall the exact location of the facility. It wasn't one of JCA's but another Jewish organization. But it was in a section of Northern California where snow was normally found at that time of year.
Except that year. Bitter cold but not a bit of snow. Bitter complaining as well. It was difficult to see any point in being in this nasty clime if there wasn't going to be snow.

My favorite was in the soap opera "Santa Barbara", where they had some action at the corner of [IIRC] State Street and Chapala. In real life, they run parallel a block apart and never meet. I never watched the series, but I remembered going "huh?" when that plot point came out.
Did you know that lemmings run off cliffs by the thousands into the sea? If you watched Disney's "Real-Life Adventures" you did. Reality was remarkably plastic if you learned it in SoCal from Disney. The shows "Adam-12" and "Emergency" often played fast-and-loose with the geography of the area. Vasquez Rocks stood in for hundreds of alien worlds, from Death's domain in "Bill and Ted" to Star Trek's "Arena" with the Gorn.

Sorry, Tesla is bullshit working -- there is very little capitalism involved. Bullshit wrapped in bullshit wrapped in subsidies wrapped in bullshit wrapped in tax credits wrapped in subsidies wrapped in bullshit doesn't become roses if you lose track of how deep you are in the rabbit hole. I'll give you that Elon Musk is a genius, but then I'd say that Professor Harold Hill was a genius as well.

This. Electric cars will make sense when you can run one at 75MPH for 300 miles on a charge, recharge them in 15 minutes, and sell them for the equivalent of ~ 50K in today's dollars. Until then they are just pipe dreams for enviro-mentalists and play toys for the rich. Not saying I wouldn't love to have a Tesla roadster cause it's a sweet machine, but they're just toys right now and not ready for prime time. Maybe one day. FTR, I'm betting on hydrogen powered fuel cells.

I did camp one year up by Arrowhead. Lots of snow on the ground -- never saw it fall. Did a bunch of schlepping around, and -- due to unfamiliarity with snow -- had a bunch of snow melt all everything the first night. Every night afterwards was wet and cold and miserable.

Yes Tesla benefitted from DOE loans and the various tax subsidies that exist. Yes the Model S could be considered derivative of the Maserati but to say they didn't have to design it is silly, as it's completely different despite appearance as an electric car.
My point is that Tesla is not a boondoggle, and the market is driving their success, which looks to continue for the immediate future. We tend to look silly when we smash all things new, because they are encroaching on our lawns or whatever - makes us easy to attack.
I don't get the 911 joke because Clarkson hates them passionately ... or is the point that they could have easily stolen the unchanged 911 design?

Go back and read Bastiat -- http://bastiat.org/en/twisatwins.html -- originally from 1850, BTW, this is not a new discussion. You, yourself, say "Tesla benefitted from DOE loans and the various tax subsidies
that exist" but continue with the equivalent of "....but there are benefits that I can see."
Well, there are costs you ignore, that you don't see. I can't begin to tell you in a single comment how deep they go, but it starts with some poor taxpayer having to eat beans instead of pork because he's short $2 in his weekly food budget. There are battery subsidies, lithium cleanup costs, investment tax credits.....ten thousand ways that the thumb of government has been applied to the scales of common sense to come up with this -- admittedly beautiful -- thing. But each one had a cost.....somewhere.....where it cannot be seen.
Tesla is a boondoggle. To say that a manipulated market is driving its success is to confess that a true market would not, and to say that it will continue ignores the many tyrants that have decorated lampposts in the past.

Will they have much life as used cars? Will the people buying them now replace them with a new model when they go for a new car in 3-10 years? Will these cars even end up lasting 10 years?

Considering that their $18K battery packs brick if you ignore 'em for too long, and are "maintenance items" under the best of circumstances, these are also valid points. They are very pretty, I'll grant. But if you cause a million bucks of misery to sell someone a pretty thing for $100K, are you really providing a benefit to the world? 'Twould be better to roll all costs into the cost of the product so that could be judged by the purchaser.

Wow I don't really know how to respond to that ... obviously people are going to disagree on things but to say Tesla=Tyranny and invoke people swinging from lampposts is really silly, and kinda makes my point for me ...
There is an economic cost to everything and there are always unintended consequences, and politics and economy have always been inextricably intertwined. I'm sure the same argument could have been made towards the Model T, and, probably any luxury good would not meet the test presented.
Tesla would probably not be successful without widespread quasi-religious belief in global warming by a certain set of conspicuous consumers, so there is that ...

Thew economic cost of Tesla should have been borne solely by Musk and any investors he could attract. Having the government subsidize it means using funds taken at gunpoint from citizens. Beause that is what tax collection ultimately devolves to requiring. If you don't think so, try not paying taxes for a while and see what happens. The guns don't come out immediately but it gets there in the end.
P.J. O'Rourke had a great bit about taxes in 'Parliament of Whores,' IIRC, in which he put forth that the government should use tax dollars for anything you wouldn't allow your mother to be shot over if she refused to pay.
Free markets are by far the best mechanism humanity has ever found for determining the value of a product or service. If the market will not pay enough to make the item profitable, it is not viable. Government subsidies only serve to distort the market and prevent the truth from being determined. Now, if you want the government to subsidize research that may lead to a viable version of the item, that is a different matter. I've long felt that the money spent on Medicare to date would have produce far more ROI if spent on furthering medical science. One good vaccine for a previously unpreventable disease is worth billions. So it could be argued that investing a billion in tax payer funds to create that vaccine is a worthy investment. It depends how hardcore you are on limited government.
Speaking of vaccines, a research group has a clever approach to malaria. They don't believe it is possible to immunize humans to the parasite but they have found they can make the mosquitoes immune by knocking out a factor living in the mosquitoes that the parasite requires. But how to immunize the mosquitoes? By getting humans to produce the antibodies and allowing the mosquitoes to suck their blood and receive a dose of the antibodies.

I live in Silicon Valley. I moved here in 1986 and have contributed to many "new things". But your arguments have several fundamental flaws -- and I sincerely urge that you read and understand Bastiat's arguments from 163 years ago before you start walking around today rehashing the losing end of them.
Any idea can be considered a good one when you can take the benefits here-and-now and consider the costs as someone else's problem, whenever... ANY IDEA. Even the retarded shit the Obama administration churns out. ANY FUCKING THING. All you have to do is pretend that only what's in front of you matters, and let someone put selected things in front of you.
The normal way that goods start out is as luxuries. Then they start ramping into volume. At some point, they get to $300 and become wildly-successful consumer goods [which, oddly, has been the case for color TVs, VCRs, DVD players, and a variety of other goods.....despite the fact that the purchasing power of $300 has varied widely over time]. Government intervention distorts this process, causing huge amounts of UNSEEN damage.
If you open your eyes to the widespread dislocations caused by this interference, then you will realize that nothing I have said makes any point for you; Tesla does, in fact, equal tyranny; and that we are headed for something that will finally make the Great Depression look like irrelevant ancient history.

I don't think we fundamentally disagree, as am I going to be against government intervention in the economy in nearly all cases, because I do believe it does more harm then good. That being said, denying reality for the sake of ideological purity is not an attractive position. I, personally, believe there should be no subsidies for anything, ever ... If you choose to define Tesla as a boondoggle within this context, I cannot argue with that - reserving my point that the reality is that many many people want them, and are willing to pay super high prices to get them.

First -- read the Bastiat link. It's http://bastiat.org/en/twisatwins.html -- and not that long. Now, I should point out that my BA is in Business Economics.....and I didn't know Bastiat's NAME until at least 15 years after I'd graduated. Save yourself some time and read it now, and you'll be about 1/3 of your way to a BA-level degree in Econ.
Your next issue relates to "government sponsorship". You need to differentiate between "government purposes" and "market manipulation". Article I, section 8, of the US Constitution lays out the lawful government interests in the US. It is a remarkably short list [ http://tinyurl.com/db58tj ], and involves no electric cars.
The internet was originally developed as a means of military communication during a time of massive disruption. That's a valid military purpose. But it has gone onward to interconnect the world with little additional governmental interference. To say that multiple, non-justified technologies should be acceptable because they could be equally valuable after a similar phase-change doesn't bear up.
Posted by: cthulhu at September 16, 2013 12:23 AM (T1005)
There was a far more straight forward and real world need: letting research groups spread across the country coordinate their activities. There is a reason the first sites were universities. They were not only involved in the development, they were the target market.
The resilience of the internet was a side effect of the switch to digital switching and use of packet communications. The POTS system is oriented towards ATM rather than IP but they have much in common. Voice communications became vastly more reliable at the same time the internet was being established but as the POTS system was already a fact of life from birth for nearly everyone living at the time developed nations, increased reliability was harder to appreciate. In much the same way younger people can have a hard time appreciating how amazingly reliable the typical new car is these days. There is a reason they now include warranties for mileage and/or time periods that was the stuff of dreams when I first started driving.
And the surviving a nuclear war? Not so much. You would only have to hit a handful of locations to knock most of the civilian population offline. Several years ago there was a fire at the 1 Wilshire facility in Los Angeles. This took out a THIRD of all global internet traffic.
Things are a bit more distributed today but a small number of nuclear strikes would be very effective at bringing down the internet. DoD keeps dedicated lines and their own facilities for a reason.
The internet did not need the government to drive its creation. It may have taken a few years longer but the elements were coming together in the private sector. Companies, especially Wall St. service providers, with massive computing capacity (for the era) were finding they had a big expense in keeping the machines running around the clock even though they were largely idle for a large chunk of the day. This was because it was a huge slow hassle to shut them down and bring them back up.
The first idea was to sell processing time to other businesses who could their work after business hours. Thus what would become known as CompuServe was launched in 1969, before the first node of the ARPAnet went into service. By the late 70s, it was becoming a consumer and small business service. Others followed and soon there were myriad services, many tied to specific computer brands and their operating systems. What became AOL was originally targeted at the Commodore 64 user base.
The big problem was a lack of standards. Proprietary protocols sprang up all over the place. What standards existed, such as the emulation of widely used terminals, helped but were very limited compared to what the newer computers could do, especially when it came to graphics. Eventually just about everything shifted to internet based standards because nobody owned them and thus there was no issue of royalties, patents, etc. But plenty of similar standards have been created in the computing field with no government participation or funding. At most, the government would have a guy representing their interest as a big buyer of the products at issue.

Fruit juices often times have preservatives that will hinder your yeast long enough for some wild yeast or some other infection to take hold.
If you want cheap hooch just use cane and baker's yeast. Or corn syrup.
Careful with too much sugar or the yeast can't take it. Better to add sugar until very sweet and then get your yeast going. When it looks like it has slowed, add more sugar but only so much as it is still drinkable. It'll smell like jolly ranchers if you use cane but will taste nasty while the yeast is still in suspension. Keep doing this until the yeast simply can't deal with the abv.
Remember to stir up the yeast from the bottom every day while it is still able to convert sugar to alcohol.
In my own playing around I've found that the "top" abv that the yeast manufacturers indicate is for unstirred/unrocked yeast. Hypothetically speaking, You can take 8% yeast well over the legal limit of 24% without anything more than a fish tank air stone, pump, and a mix of yeast energizer and a wee bit of yeast nutrient (nutrient is fert and the energizer is spent yeast hulls and such that help the stuff along.). This wasn't nasty tasting stuff either. Just remember the higher abv you go, the slower it is but 20% is doable in 7 days.
If you're not planning on, hypothetically, running it through a cook, you'd take the air off and stop slowing you're tired of how slow the yeast has become or it simply can't take any more abv and let it sit for a week to let the yeast fall out. Then rack it to a carboy and let it sit a month or two to let more yeast fall out (this is where you'll start to have a pain with baker's yeast and why proper brewing yeast is better. Midwest Supplies is a nice source.). Then rack again and after 1-2 months determine if you need to bottle (very little yeast on the bottom and doesn't taste yeasty (nasty if not malt based sugars). At this point it is drinkable but you'll want to save some off for 1, 2, 5+ years. You'll be astounded how the batch tastes in time.
When aging in bottles do not store where the temp changes rapidly. That will ruin your brew in a hurry. Bulk aging (in a carboy) is the best protection against rapid temp change if you do not have a basement.
