There Is No Pravda in Правда - 2013 Edition

From a recent Pravda editorial on John Kerry and Syria:

Moral: President Obama does not have a leg to stand on in his neo-conservative elitist dream to take Syria by force and install a US-friendly regime to give the USA control over the country's resources before the upcoming attacks against Lebanon and Iran.

Wait - Syria has resources and Obama's a neo-conservative? Eh forget it - they're rolling.

But if an attack on Iran really is on the Syrian menu, then consider me open to suasion. Cause I've been nursing a 30+ year grudge against those Persian bastards.

PJ O'Rourke on Brave Sir Obama Throughout History

Pontius Barack Pilate Obama,
Matthew 27:24

When he saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of these just persons, but I'll ask the Senate back in Rome for authority to do something-or-other, although it may have to wait until after Good Friday."
John Barack Fitzgerald
Kennedy Obama

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill-and since we're not engaged in nation-building, every nation should wish us well-that we shall pay any price if it's not too high, bear any burden unless it's burdensome, meet any hardship unless it's hard, support any friend if we have any, oppose any foe-although no nation should think of us as a foe because we're not that kind of country anymore-to assure the survival and success of liberty, unless it's a holiday weekend.

David Frum: Asshole

I used to think he was merely foolish and misguided (but sincere), but after enough of his assholery including today's anti-gun screed it's clear he's just a nasty piece of work in a human suit.

And here's some of his ugly little Twitter droppings from today:

frumassholery1

Eh. At this point if it came down to Frum vs. fire, I'd say let fire have its chance.

Miss California on How To Deal With the Syrian Situation

And her answer is about as coherent as Obama's Syria policy.

But in her defense she's probably only given it maybe 8 seconds thought tops and still had to worry about the talent portion of the pageant. I'm not sure what Obama's excuse is.

Heh: The NYT Times Finally Discovers Voter Fraud

And of course it involves a local Tuscaloosa, AL school board election, U of Alabama sororities and fraternities, and whole lotta white people and Republican-types.

The turmoil began some weeks earlier. It raised the specter of the Machine, a secret society representing a league of select and almost exclusively white fraternities and sororities, which has been around for a century or more. Once a breeding ground for state political leaders, the Machine (it has long been known by that nickname) today maintains a solid hold on student government through an effective, and critics say coercive, brand of old-fashioned organization politics.

But the Machine's apparent involvement in an August school board election, a rare appearance in municipal politics, has prompted a lawsuit, accusations of voter fraud and an outcry that in many ways primed the campus for the larger storm over inclusion and tradition that is now taking place.

...The numbers bear out their influence. Of the 369 voters registered in the district this year, 269 registered during one week in mid-August, and 94 percent of those newly registered voters were 21 or younger. Mr. Kirby won the race by 416 to 329 votes.

His opponent, Kelly Horwitz, filed suit this month, claiming that many of the voters were ineligible, including 11 unrelated people who listed the same residence - a small, single-family house near the football stadium.

Keep in mind that the total number of votes in the entire election is barely the turnout of a even single Chicago cemetery.

Obamacare Wants to Know About Your Sex Life

He who pays gets to pry:

'Are you sexually active? If so, with one partner, multiple partners or same-sex partners?"

Be ready to answer those questions and more the next time you go to the doctor, whether it's the dermatologist or the cardiologist and no matter if the questions are unrelated to why you're seeking medical help. And you can thank the Obama health law.

"This is nasty business," says New York cardiologist Dr. Adam Budzikowski. He called the sex questions "insensitive, stupid and very intrusive." He couldn't think of an occasion when a cardiologist would need such information - but he knows he'll be pushed to ask for it.

The president's "reforms" aim to turn doctors into government agents, pressuring them financially to ask questions they consider inappropriate and unnecessary, and to violate their Hippocratic Oath to keep patients' records confidential.

Embarrassing though it may be, you confide things to a doctor you wouldn't tell anyone else. But this is entirely different.

Doctors and hospitals who don't comply with the federal government's electronic-health-records requirements forgo incentive payments now; starting in 2015, they'll face financial penalties from Medicare and Medicaid. The Department of Health and Human Services has already paid out over $12.7 billion for these incentives.

My opinion has always been that it you ask an out-of-bounds intrusive question, then you have no right to expect a truthful answer. So from me you'll get a lie, a boastful over-the-top exaggeration, or a gratuitous maternal insult or worse depending on whatever is most convenient/satisfying for me at the moment.

Remembering Cal Worthington

It's been years since I've seen one of his ads but I can still it hear it playing in my head. Back when I lived in LA it was common among what Ace would call the New Class to mock Cal as just a dumb hick who got lucky - but in reality he was anything but - and he didn't mind if he got mocked so as long as you bought a car from one of his dealerships.

Cal Worthington died Sunday at the age of 92.  If the name doesn't ring a bell, you (a) never lived in Southern California; (b) don't watch car dealer commercials on TV, (c) never worked in sales, or (d) all the above.

Mr. Worthington was the Los Angeles-area car dealer whose angular features, cowboy suit and ubiquitous "Dog Spot" (an animal that was never a canine) graced thousands of commercials over a career more than 50 years.  The Television Advertising Bureau described him as the "greatest car pitchman" in the history of the medium, and it's hard to disagree...

Most advertising "pros" recoil at the Worthington model; by their standards, he did almost everything wrong.  In an era that favored smooth-talking announcers, Cal looked and sounded like your uncle from Oklahoma (where he was born and grew up during the Dust Bowl).  His spots weren't particularly artistic, but they certainly caught your attention.  There was Cal, doing a headstand on the hood of a car, promising to "stand on my head, 'til my ears turn red" (to sell a vehicle).  The background music was a jingle that was lifted from "If You're Happy and You Know It," with a home-spun chorus telling viewers to "Go see Cal/Go see Cal/Go See Cal" about every three seconds.  Incidentally, the jingle had 26 stanzas, for those keeping score at home.  Worthington wrote it himself.

...In passing, Cal Worthington will be largely remembered for those thousands of TV commercials that made him a cultural icon.  But that does him something of a disservice; Worthington belonged to that same generation of Americans that included men like Ray Kroc and Sam Walton; businessmen who were salesmen at heart, that knew what their customers wanted and sold the hell out of their product line.  Selling, as practiced by a Walton, Kroc or Worthington, is an art.  But unfortunately, it's a dying art; today's generation seems less interested in closing the deal if it can't be done on-line.

The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.

And my twitter thang.

5 The Coming California Peasants Revolt? California's, and to a great degree America's, breadbasket is the Central Valley. It is one of the state's largest industries, but also the type of work that the coastal elite and the Silicon Valley/Hollywood axis dismisses as being something for the poor serfs to do. The Central Valley is increasingly becoming a real life equivalent of the first Mad Max movie, and all the environmentally obsessed elites care about is denying the farmers the water they need to grow their crops all in the name of saving an endangered fish the locals refer to as “bait.” More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=3190

64 "I looked up that AP history book at Amazon earlier today. Someone had already called them out in the reviews about their idiotic 2A views. But the rest of the comments were glowing."

Also in today's edition of Cretins Attempting And Failing To Talk Intelligently About Guns, there was this gem, from the chief of medicine at the D.C. hospital where several of the Navy Yard survivors were taken:

"Orlowski also notes that the weapon used to shoot the victims 'had to be a semi-automatic because they're talking about gunshots that they heard in rapid succession.'"

Facepalm. Hey, doc, how about having yourself a nice steaming hot mug of Shut The Fuck Up, and answering questions about medical matters, and not incorrectly opining about guns.

The same MD proceeded to turn the press conference into a forum for her own personal and quite indignant views about how awful it is that people in America can buy guns. And how she hopes that guns can be outlawed so that her hospital can get rid of its trauma department. (That'll work out just great for all those auto accident victims, then.)

None of you will be surprised to hear, I wager, that she hails from Shitcargo.

97 I was at the clinic today (not a doc, a nurse practitioner) and I told her straight up not to bother asking any personal questions as I wasn't going to answer them. Since they don't accept insurance, I don't think they have to comply with all the OCare bullshit.

I pay a membership fee of $30 per month. For that, I can see her as often as I want, for $15 a pop. Blood work, including liver enzymes and cholesterol, runs me another $15.

She said that the chances of them closing due to OCare was zero, as their target market is the uninsured (like me) and small businesses that cannot afford to offer any healthcare plans except membership in this clinic.

(That'll work out just great for all those auto accident victims, then.) 124 >Tonight's post brought to you by the Second Amendment - AP Edition: Figures. One of the greatest things about the US Constitution is its simplicity and its accessibility to the common man. The EU's Constitution is, what, hundreds of pages long and is a complete mess. Most people can read that page from the textbook and instinctively know something is wrong, even if they can't finger it at first. Even liberals, but they know a direct assault on the 2nd Amendment is for the most part a political loser, so they try to undermine it with the "oh, it doesn't' really say what it says" argument.

Read the fine print on your insurance policy and claim forms - you waive it routinely contractually,  without government intervention.  Obviously, in the new Obamacare world, your medical history then becomes politicized ...

Only way around it would be to not accept insurance and pay for your care directly to a doctor that is willing to accept cash, but that too will eventually be banned, as it is in Canada ...

HIPAA is supposed to protect the confidentiality of our records, but who watches the watchers when there are political advantages that can be taken.  When care is rationed, it will be rationed to those that provided the "correct" answers, or else behavioral, as it is with the NHS in the UK currently.

224 This just came across my twitter feed, allegedly from a woman that works at the Navy Yard.

"The true story of how the Navy Yard shooter got into the building.  The NY has scan in security all day except for AM rush hour.  During rush hour a second door is opened to handle the the inflownof people were you only have to swipe your badge.  The shooter went to this door, waited for someone to swipe their id and piggybacked behind them.  A security officer saw this and in the process of stopping the shooter was shot and killed by the shooter.  A second security guard was alerted by the shots comes in and the shooter shot him in both legs.
The shooter then took the deceased officers weapon and entered the building.  His goal was the 5th floor where the contractors work because he was just fired.  The 5th floor requires security access which he no longer had.  So he went to the 4th floor and proceeded to shoot whoever he wanted."

Anyone here (maybe Bomber) that can corroborate the security procedures or indicate if this sounds plausible?

Can anyone convince Marple to ask Ace to let her back onboard? Enough time has passed that she could probably do it through gritted teeth crossing her fingers behind her back and Ace'd do it.
Posted by: cthulhu at September 16, 2013 10:50 PM (T1005)

I can't really see ace doing it. When you're asking for your money back on twitter I can't see him buying any statements of "I'm sorry"

Posted by: Buzzion at September 16, 2013 11:24 PM (ixjDm)

Believe it or don't. Ace has historically been unusually receptive to "I was on a three-day bender, that's not how I normally act" arguments....although, yeah -- now that you remind me, Marple went multi-media -- so another month might be prudent. Then, again, it might take a month to convince Marple.

And, like I said, under normal circumstances it might be enough to say, "your house, your rules. Can I get unbanned?" through gritted teeth. Some can say it, some cannot -- which is why even accidental bannings or "collateral damage" bannings don't totally tip the place into paranoia.....and I'm pretty freakin' paranoid to start with. I think Marple was reaping more than she'd sown because of a build-up that she hadn't participated in -- but she sure as hell didn't help her case in the immediate followup.

When you come in by car from the Pentagon you can get in by the old Main Gate, I recall seeing pedestrians entering there as well. Don't know how that gate works.

When you go in by pov, you go around the back and go through the whole vehicle checkpoint deal.  There is also a pedestrian gate there.  The story could work at the back gate.  There are couple of turnstile covered by an armed guard - I don't recall a fortified position.

Its been 6months or more since I was over there though.

The short version: rezalB was being a drunken dick to some of the moronettes on the ONT so I asked him to leave. He refused and doubled down which got him banned.

The next day he tried begging/cajoling Ace to let him back but in the drunken process managed to have such a complete and utter meltdown that by the end he was posting his address and threatening to fight/kill anyone who showed up. That got him banned with extreme prejudice.

Posted by: Yoshi, Aggrieved Victim of the White Man at September 17, 2013 12:02 AM (YNK3y) It definitely has some gore and scares, and a body count. But it's not full-on horror flick, it violates some of their tropes, like people surviving through their own efforts and not just dumb luck. I don't really go for horror movies but I did like Event Horizon. It definitely tried to scare the audience, though. I'm kind of annoyed at how much sci-fi and horror get mixed. Pandorum for example had too much of the "horror movie" to it.

It's arguably much better directed than Sunshine. As laughable as Sunshine became in the 3rd act, I enjoyed it up to a point, mostly for the going to Mercury bit. Event Horizon is a better movie, though. Plus it's got Neptune in it.

"In May, 2007 it was announced that Hagar would sell an 80% interest in Cabo Wabo Tequila to Gruppo Campari, the world's sixth-largest spirits company, for $80 million. Skyy Spirits of San Francisco, a vodka producer and subsidiary of Milan's Gruppo Campari, planned to market Cabo Wabo globally, with continued participation by Hagar. Gerry Ruvo, president and chief executive of Skyy Spirits, said, "Sammy has done a fantastic job building the brand, so we are going to obviously spend time with him and work with him to continue our efforts to take the brand to an even larger level, both here in the U.S. and, more important, globally." Ruvo said Great Britain, Spain, Australia, Southeast Asia, Japan, Germany and Italy are considered key expansion markets for Tequila."

I've been hit 6 times. Only two of them stopped.
One of the others was chased down by a motorcyclist who saw the whole thing. He got me the plate # and gave a description of the driver to the cops.

I don't blame him for being bitter about the hit and run. I don't blame him for being angry. I don't consider him whiny or bitchy -- he suffered a legitimate harm and has been stonewalled and fucked-over by the government that confiscates part of every one of his paychecks. I don't get too worked up about him tangling with EoJ -- leading to EoJ, being a gentleman and acting the adult, to retreat off the ONT. But going fucking apeshit, with an 'ette, on Ace's blog, getting her banned as well? Yeah, that.

When she said that "we must not jump to conclusions about his motive", I turned to MrsCaniac and told her that the shooter must not have been a Tea Party member. 15 minutes later they show the mug shot, MrsCaniac laughs and tells me that I was right. The homeless made a reappearance at the beginning of the #boulderflood hashtag when there seemed to be a race by certain members of the caring community  to tweet every media outlet or govt authority inquiring about their plans for the homeless repeatedly.  Twitter appears to be a race to see who can polticize/condemn/show concern the quickest.  This was happening before the flooding even really hit.

There';s a hell of a lot of "Who Goes There" and the 2 "Thing" movies in it... particularly interesting are the bits that predate the Carpenter one. It's either a huge coincidence, or it must have led to borrowed bits. Odd.

Yeah, they are essentially a Garage Rock / Punk band.  'The Smoke of Hell' is a pretty good place to start for that stuff.

My favorite Bowie song is "Cygnet Committee" off of Space Oddity.  For me it perfectly sums up the resulting dystopia of idealistic hippies coming to power (or hell the French Revolution).  The disillusionment and slow build are perfect.  The dude could write/perform.

Huh.  Now *that* is an impressively obscure pull right there.  You're right, it's a damn good song and lyric, especially for so early in Bowie's career.  A few ungainly lines in there ("the love machine lumbers through desolation rows," please?) but still, pretty epic.

That entire album is actually quite underrated.  People usually dismiss it as "Space Oddity" + a bunch of crap but in truth most of the songs there are pretty solid.  "Janine" in particular is another very underappreciated one.

557 "Heroes" is an unimpeachable classic (and an ethical one too: the purity of doomed love in the shadow of the moral atrocity of the Berlin Wall), but it always irks me that most people only know the short "single edit" of that song.  The full six minute version is so much more powerful, with two extra verses and a critical coda that brings it all back home.

"Heroes" is one hell of a great album, by the way.  "Beauty And The Beast," "Blackout," and "Joe The Lion" are nearly as great as the title track.  Bowie was damn near untouchable from 1976-1980.

One of my personal hobbyhorses is that performers who were once buskers have an understanding of showmanship that is infinitely superior to those who were just told they were showmen and stuck on stage as part of a larger production.

A good thesis, and correct I think.  Bowie cut his teeth on experimental theater for years before he 'made it' as a musician, so he was equipped from the start to be a great stage performer.

565 BTW, anyone who like Berlin-era David Bowie but hasn't heard Iggy Pop's The Idiot (1976) is depriving themselves of a critical piece of the puzzle.  It's an incredible album, the missing link between Station To Station and Low, and all the music was written by Bowie (who plays guitar/keyboards and sings on the record).  "Sister Midnight" was later given new lyrics by Bowie and recorded for Lodger as "Red Money."  And it's hilarious how much better "China Girl" is in its original version than on Let's Dance.

- Double Nickels On The Dime, Minutemen: there's actually a bit of filler crammed in near the end but who can argue with shit like "Two Beads At The End," "It's Expected I'm Gone," and "Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth?"

- Zen Arcade, Husker Du: the necessary companion to Double Nickels (D. Boon even had "Take that, Huskers!" carved into the runout groove of Nickels in acknowledgment of how Zen Arcade inspired them.)  The first LP is arguably the definitive hardcore statement: that's it, nobody's topped it and nobody ever will.  "I'll Never Forget You" alone is more harrowing and painful than anything Black Flag or Minor Threat ever dreamed of.  The second LP is rock nirvana.  And the whole damn thing ends with what can only be described as the world's first jazz-hardcore instrumental jam ("Reoccurring Dreams") AND IT'S FUCKING AWESOME.

590 - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Genesis: yes, I love Genesis, and yes, fuck you if ya got a problem with that.  Peter Gabriel's swansong is weird, alienating, unabashedly proggy, but also some of the toughest, ugliest, rawest, and paradoxically most beautiful music ever to come out of prog-rock as a genre.

- London Calling, The Clash: needs no explanation from me.

- Exile On Main Street, The Rolling Stones: see above.  But I will say that fucking love the fact that the last song on this album, "Soul Survivor," is a gritty, down-and-dirty rock song about...life as a pirate on the high seas.  Arrr, matey!

- English Settlement, XTC: my favorite art-rock outfit of the late '70s/early '80s, although they grew and changed so much that they're weirdly unclassifiable.  This is their best, from right before they quit touring altogether.

- The Beatles, The Beatles: it's the White Album, it's a classic for a reason.

- Blonde On Blonde, Bob Dylan: again, see above.  I could do without "Pledging My Time" and "Temporary Like Achilles" and everything else is written in my soul at this point.  "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again" for the win.

- Metal Box, Public Image, Ltd.: one of the records that invented postpunk as we know it, and still as uncompromisingly weird (yet great) as the day it was released.  Poptones!

- 1999, Prince: people usually go for Sign O' The Times as the Prince double-LP to choose, but I still prefer this one.  How can you deny "Little Red Corvette," "Let's Pretend We're Married," "Delirious," and "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)"?  (Oh and the B-sides from this record are every bit as good as the stuff he included.

- Daydream Nation, Sonic Youth: SY is overrated as a group, but the reason they're overrated is because of this record which is pretty much impossible to overrate.  Listen to the opening minute of "The Sprawl" or "Candle" or "'Cross The Breeze" and you'll be hooked too.

627 >>>If we want to go to comps, Joy Division Substance is head and shoulders above just about anything else

1.) It gets ridiculous if you go to comps, as there are too many.  How about Snap! by The Jam or Neil Young's Decade?

2.) Substance by New Order is actually better than Substance by Joy Division.  And I say this as a person who has literally every single thing ever recorded AND EVERY CONCERT EVER PERFORMED up to 1985 or so by both bands.  JD were better in the sense that every single thing they did in a studio is a must-own, but honestly I just plain enjoy NO (up until 1987 or so) more.

When you're talking about "massively awesome double albums", I think most people are thinking about classes 3 and 4 from my post at 621, with a slight edge toward 4. There are worthy live albums (e.g. Feat's "Columbus") and worthy retrospectives (e.g. Skynyrd's "Gold and Platinum")....but fully-developed concepts that are bigger than one album (Genesis "Lamb", Floyd "Wall") or primal eruptions of talent (e.g. Beatles "White Album", Prince "1999", Dylan "Blonde on blonde") steal the show.

I here you on NO Substance, and I almost brought it up in addition.  I guess I can say I migrated over time from more of a NO fan, on account of the depressiveness, to a preference for JD, as I came to appreciate the rawness and clarity of the sound.  I gave a way a vinyl "Closer" not too long after buying it new.  It was probably the NIN cover of Dead Souls that turned me, and why I sought out Substance, which is now frustratingly missing and my rip is skippy.

I need to get a copy of Snap!

636 Yeah, I had assumed we were talking about double studio albums (category 3 or 4). Live albums are almost always double*, and I wouldn't count compilations at all. *True to his contrary and iconoclastic nature, Bob Dylan has released no fewer than three single live albums.

Scene: honky-tonk bar, after midnight, noise over in the middle.....darker, quieter drinkin' at the end of the bar.

There's a dusty, lined, rough man in the shadows out at the very edge, wearing a cowboy hat, slowly sippin' on a glass of whiskey. Not his first, not his last....the one he has now.

A young woman, avoiding the crowds, takes the stool next to him and signals the barkeep. After taking a big gulp from the mixed concoction she is served, she turns to the man and says, "hope you don't mind me crowdin' in here. What do you do?"

He thinks a minute and replies, "I'm a cowboy. I take cattle out to the range and bring 'em back again. I birth 'em, brand 'em, keep 'em safe for years, and ship 'em off for slaughter." There is a beat, until he remembers his manners......"How 'bout you?"

She looks a bit perplexed for a moment, but decides to ride gamely on -- "I'm a lesbian. I get up in the morning, and think about women; I go through my day and think about touching them, holding them; I go to sleep at night and dream about women." ......but her nerve fails her, and she blurts out, "oh, is that Dianne?" and scurries off to the other side of the room.

Time passes.

A while later, a tired-looking businessman sidles up to the bar. Seating himself, he turns to the man with the cowboy hat and says, "hope you don't mind me crowdin' in here. What do you do?"

There's an even longer pause, and then the reply: "well, up until this evening, I thought of myself as a cowboy.....but now, I think I might be a lesbian."

A little background to this.

It is cosmic incomprehensible bullshit to try to brand Republicans with oppressing blacks. Martin Luther King, jr. was a Republican; Republicans (Lincoln) freed the slaves in the first place; the KKK was vigilante Democrats, and civil rights legislation pushed by Republicans managed to be enacted when Democrat resistance was fractured.

Which explains why I can honor MLK and so thoroughly despise Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton....because I, too, dream of a world where we "live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Anyway, this sets up a Thurgood Marshall anecdote. In case one needs reminding, he was the first African-American Supreme Court justice and had successfully argued a number of cases before the court, including the monumental "Brown v. Board of Education", which overturned "separate, but equal."

So the story goes that on his first day of real work, showing up to the Supreme Court, he said, "How's it hangin', Chiefie-baby?" to the notoriously stuck-up Chief Justice. So, whenever I say, "how's it hangin'?" -- that's who I'm thinking of.

A short summary of the current flameout might be, "laws were passed to maintain order but also to establish a dominant paradigm....until they were passed to establish a dominant paradigm and possibly maintain order.....which soon became a debate between raw power and the ideology of the paradigm....which was won by the exercise of lawless power. The roots are easy to see -- the very first "exemptions" and "deferrals" from Obamacare have no basis in the law, whatsoever.
