Because after 5 years of Obama it is 1989 income-wise.
A Census Bureau report released on Tuesday reveals that the typical American family now earns less than it did in 1989. In 1989, median household income was $51,681 (in current dollars). In 2012, median household income was $51,017.
Poverty levels in 2012 also climbed to 46.5 million Americans-15% of the country-from 46.2 million in 2011. As Washington Post economics writer Neil Irwin put it, "This isn't a lost decade for economic gains for Americans. It is a lost generation."

The 1% Are Again Getting Richer. Should the 99% Really Care?
Well I've never been bothered by this kind of inequality statistic since I've always figured that 1) the wealthy will always do well since they have access to better resources, info, tools, expertise etc. and 2) the pie isn't fixed - every extra dollar Trump makes does not make me poorer.
But the mere existence of inequality is an obsession of the Left and occupies a large part of their mind space. Hell their mental living room is mostly filled with constant concern over what the top 1% are up to - a population smaller than San Antonio who they'll likely never meet or interact with in any way.
But even an unabashed right-wing capitalist like myself has to pause for a second after seeing a chart like this:
Looking at the upper right you can see that the top 10% of earners took in 50.4% of all income last year, the highest share recorded since 1917 when the government began collecting data. That's a pretty huge differential and no doubt it sticks in the craw of a lot of people. But on the other hand is it really that much of a problem?
Well James Pethokoukis makes a good argument that as a dramatic a ratio as this is it's ultimately due to market forces rather than say cronyism or corruption. Nor is it necessarily coming at the expense of the 99% or apparently limiting the economic mobility of those in the non-1%. So maybe not an issue after all.
And even if it were an issue, all the proposed solutions to it by economists (top income tax rates > 75%, confiscatory inheritance taxes, etc.) would likely cause more harm to the average person than the income inequality itself.
Meet the Illegal Alien 'Dreamer' Poster Child
Her name is Alaa and she was born in Kuwait but grew up in Chicago and studied Architecture.
Turn-offs: the American government, white people, the American Flag, and Israel.
Turn-ons: Community organizing, Palestinian nationalism, brown people, and beautiful ocean sunsets.
She's here illegally and demands a drivers license and a green card. Oh and it's all Israel's fault.
Why do all of you rightwing nut-jobs hate hard-working immigrants like Alaa?
The TSA is Officially Allowed to Lie to You in Order to Cover Their Ass
Even if you file a FOIA request they can still flat out lie to you.
U.S. District Judge Joan A. Lenard granted the TSA the special privilege of not needing to go that route, rubber-stamping the decision of the TSA and the airport authority to write to me that no CCTV footage of the incident existed when, in fact, it did. This footage is non-classified and its existence is admitted by over a dozen visible camera domes and even signage that the area is being recorded. Beyond that, the TSA regularly releases checkpoint video when it doesn't show them doing something wrong (for example, here's CCTV of me beating their body scanners). But if it shows evidence of misconduct? Just go ahead and lie.
Cass Sunstein: How Human Psychology Is Holding Back Climate Change Action
The first obstacle is that people tend to evaluate risks by way of "the availability heuristic," which leads them to assess the probability of harm by asking whether a readily available example comes to mind. An act of terrorism, for example, is likely to be both available and salient, and hence makes people fear that another such event will occur (whether it is likely to or not). So, too, a recent crime or accident can activate attention and significantly inflate people's assessment of risk.By contrast, climate change is difficult to associate with any particular tragedy or disaster.
...Second, people tend to be especially focused on risks or hazards that have an identifiable perpetrator, and for that reason produce outrage. Warmer temperatures are a product not of any particular human being or group, but the interaction between nature and countless decisions by countless people. There are no obvious devils or demons -- no individuals who intend to create the harms associated with climate change. For terrorism, a "we-they" narrative fits the facts; in the context of climate change, those who are the solution might well also be, or seem to be, the problem. In these circumstances, public outrage is much harder to fuel.
Third, human beings are far more attentive to immediate threats than to long-term ones.
Actually I'd say that this set of psychological 'obstacles' is a pretty good filter for separating bullshit imaginary threats from ones we need to actually worry about. So maybe 5th dimensional Quasi-Morphs are currently hunting humans and will eat us all in less than 25 years - but until we start seeing actual Quasi-Morph ecto-gnawed bodies it's not worth our time to worry about this particular threat.

Kelsey Grammer Is Joining 'The Expendables 3'?
Grammer is near a deal to play the role of Bonaparte, an ex-mercenary who helps the Expendables in their mission. While Grammer was long identified for playing the mild-mannered shrink-turned-radio host Dr. Frasier Crane, he has transformed into a Hollywood tough guy. Most of that came from him playing a ferocious powerbroker in the recently canceled Starz series Boss.
Well it goes against his usual casting which means it could be a surprisingly awesome role for him.

Does sneaking snorts of Vicks 44 (the old stuff, back in the '60's) in my dad's (way-cool, non-orthogonal) closet count? Or asking for one or two too many extra glasses of Mogen David wine at Thanksgiving dinner, does that count?

Basically, he said "you know, all that shit you got that you really like? Like flat-screen TVs and iPhones? Yeah, the 1%ers bought that shit when it was like WAY expensive, and 'cause they did, they gave the manufacturers good feedback 'cause of the shit they bought and the shit they didn't buy, that's why the manufacturers got their shit together and figured out what kind of shit people really wanted, and then cranked up their manufacturing shit and cranked out good shit for the masses, and that's why you all have iPhones and flat-screen TVs today, homies."
I may have taken liberties with the idioms, there, but that's the basic argument from "The Constitution of Liberty."

Unfortunately, while featuring this Junior Jihadi Jane as a poster girl for the Dream Act is a major gaffe, Dick Durbin is politically invulnerable. The fine state of Sick-inois is going to send him back to the Senate forever, no matter what stupid shit he comes up with.
However, this might turn out to be useful in embarrassing other incumbents, vulnerable next cycle, who have been pushing the Dream Act nonsense.

The thought that taking from the rich and giving to the "poor" amount to anything only has to look at how much we have redistributed with the regards to the "great-society", 10's of TRILLIONS, 10's.
Yet, and yet we somehow still have poor people floating around the joint.

Posted by: nerdygirl at September 18, 2013 11:19 PM (mHUKK)
Yep. Which is why the poverty level percentage is meaningless - it counts people's incomes before they get any benefits, subsidies, or freebies. So statistically the poor will never become less poor no matter how much we give them.

As far as the 1%, 5 % 05 whatever. The myth on the left is that somehow that guy has my money or took it from me. No, that guy in most (not all) earned his money. And even if he inherited it, who cares, it's not taking money out of my pocket. Like any of us would say, gee, thanks rich uncle for leaving me millions, but nah.. I'm good with my 50K per year. Most of them earned it though by working their ass off and risking it many times over. I am so tired of the evil boogeyman rich guy. Sure, many are assholes. I know many lower and middle class assholes too. I don't care if someone is rich though. Many of them are miserable too. Whatever I don't care. I have a lefty douchebag brother in law. He rails on it all the time. So I finally asked him one day. I said. O.K. Lefty douchebag brother in law. You have more than 93% of the rest of the world. Literally. If you own a car you're in the top 5% in the word. Living in the US literally puts you in the top percentile of wealth in the world. So why don't you owe those people? Or why shouldn't they be entitled to what you have? He rambled incoherently and changed the subject.

Stop voting for Democrats.

Alas, that won't do it -- it will, at best, pause the problem. If we actually wanted to fix it, we'd have to do something like a constitutional amendment to clarify the Commerce Clause -- and the RINOs we got in the GOP would certainly never do that.

New soldering iron.
Turn it on to highest setting.
Remove from holder
Touch solder to tip after 2-4 minutes solder should flow onto tip.
Solder should boil and smoke as flux in solder evaporates.
Dip tip into steel wool rapidly. This will remove excess solder and leave you with a clean tinned tip.
Repeat two more times.
Turn iron off if you do not plan to use it and place in holder.
Repeat above steps while you are using your iron.
Never use wet sponge. All you do is cool your tip down and increase blackening and charing of tip.
A tip will last you a lifetime if above steps are followed.

The trouble is, we'd all have to do it or it wouldn't work. (strength in numbers).
I'm not going to play the game with them, let them levy a fine. They say they won't enforce it and I don't get a "refund". (it's not a refund if it's YOUR money).
Make your exemptions equal what you would normally pay in tax on your W-4 (that's the one where your employer asks how many exemptions to take for your pay).
If you're self employed only pay your quarterly payments the size of your actual income. (c'mon you know you can make it balance)
OR make no quarterly payments at all. As long as the difference isn't over a certain amount (I forget the amount) when filing time happens they won't fine you for not making the quarterly payments.
Best yet would be to just stop playing their game.
It's rigged anyway.
I think with so many people working at the edge of insolvency and more on the way that many will begin to think of just saying NO.

If they are the only ones that pick up on that, they'll have a huge advantage when the poo really hits the wall. The dumb ones will think they are still special when all evidence proves otherwise.
Then, the gap between the 1% and the rest will only get wider, and this will be evidence that we need more government intervention, and the dumb ones will vote for it in masses.

I've heard some say they can't braze with MAPP as it's too cold, others say it can be done.
I don't know as I use acetylene.
And it depends on the metals, how clean they are and the flux you use.
Oh and Kreplach? Thanks for the advice but I'll keep doing it the way I have for 50+ years. The steel wool is good for cold cleaning and after the job while hot but during a job of unsoldering and resoldering, sometimes you need a quick wipe to clear the tip and the steel wool won't do it (in my experience). Either that or the way my old man taught me; flipping the iron at the floor. (which has a load of other consequences.)
Now if you're talking fine, close pcb soldering/repair then you should be working with as low a heat as possible anyway and a little cooling won't hurt the tip all that much. Of course it will lower the temperature but the sponge shouldn't be soaking wet and you shouldn't drag the tip back and forth enough to cool it down enough to matter.
Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Ecclesiates 9:11) at September 18, 2013 08:21 PM (lAZep)
The lifetime remark is for the average person who does not solder every day.
That being said, as video engineer who has conservatively soldered about 5 million connections over a 25 year period, you should not go through more than a tip a year, if that, following proper procedures.

I just repaired a $50 appliance with 7 bucks of diodes.
Motor is dc with bridge rectifier soldered on the back to make ac into dc.
One of the diodes blew (they were sized too small $$$$) so instant short and motor no worky and breaker trips.
Bought some Radio Shuck™ diodes rated at 3A instead of the 1A's installed.
Soldered them in and away it went.
cha ching. Just saved $50 replacement cost.
Thank you Thank you. No applause please. Just send money.

It seems like "just the tip" has been a joke since grade school, but I recently learned that "point of inevitable ejaculation" is actually a medically-recognized thing.
It's even cited in unintentionally humorous articles like this one -- http://tinyurl.com/n3xtuv4 -- which contains the gem: "At times, a man may report distress because he is unable to prevent
ejaculation for 20 or 30 minutes. In this instance, the diagnosis of PE
is not warranted even if the individual reports high levels of distress."

Sure. First make sure the power is OFF. (teehee)
Then use a very low heat iron. (some components may not desolder as they used a higher when the board was dipped.)
Get a solder sucker to remove any solder as it melts to take it off the board.
Most pcb's these days use surface mount components so it will be tricky. If it's an older board and the part has wires, it will be easier.
Heat will kill the new component so when replacing use as little solder iron contact as possible.
After soldering in place the new component double check for solder making contact with other solder runs or that other nearby components aren't loose from the heat.
Then smoke test to see if it works.

In High School chem, I had run this one assigned experiment in about 20 minutes while everyone else was floundering and looking to barely complete it in an hour...but the results looked sloppy. So, I thought -- I'll wash everything out and re-run it and see if it gets any tighter. In order to have a clean, dry beaker, I stuck it over a bunsen after cleaning, then pulled it off after it started glowing -- I mean, what the hell, it's pyrex and it's the school's pyrex at that.
So I'm reloading the experiment while the majority of my classmates are halfway through with theirs, and the chem teacher (whose normal gig was track coach) comes by and says, "Goddamn it, cthulhu! You've got to get a move on!" and picked up the beaker.
*sizzle* -- I give him credit, though, he managed to set it down on the lab bench instead of breaking it. "Sssshhh! Why didn't you tell me that was hot?" -- which lead to one of my treasured, perfect, High School moments as I went back to measuring the ingredients, when I replied, "you didn't ask me."

Here's an anecdote. There is a 400 Million Powerball drawing tonight (or was it last night). I had a co-worker holding court in the lunchroom about how "they" should just take that 400 million, and give the money equally to every American citizen. (Or at least the 99 percent). By this guy's math, every American would get 1.3 million dollars and be on easy street. Recession over, blah blah blah.
You should have seen the looks I got after I pointed out the blatant, ridiculous math error. (400 million divided by 310 million does not equal 1.3 million, for those keeping score)
So, yes, explaining the minimum wage and tax rates with these people is a futile exercise.

The money that paid for my college education came from my dad building 5 houses in SoCal in the late '70s....which he drafted me into, bitching and whining -- and which have been some of the most worthwhile things I've ever done.
Around the time we were putting the roof on house #3, I was bitching and whining that he should get a new blade for his little black-and-decker circular saw and he finally gave in. That morning, he had been -- as usual -- shoving the saw through a sheet of plywood and backing a smidge and shoving and backing, all while smoke was coming out of the cut. So I changed the blade over lunch.
So he puts up sheet of plywood, gets the saw going, and shoves the blade into it -- and went all the way across the sheet, catching the edge in the gut, and almost dropped the saw off the other side. It was so startling and so out-of-control that I was in shock when it happened, but it's always good for a chuckle now. After that, he got a new blade for each house.

But that only works if the penalty is higher than the reward.
With so many out of work or working less and the high cost of compliance, I predict that more and more will take that route.
Perhaps even a preference cascade.
They can't prosecute everyone and yes they do tend to do high profile cases and then publicize them especially around April.
The actual numbers of investigation, prosecutions and trial are lower than you think. Usually if they find out (and they have snitch program just for that. Think ex-gf/bf, ex and current wives/husbands, employers, fellow employees, your neighbor etc.) they do a quit research and then send a letter saying they have found you were remiss in whatever and for you to refile/file and send the money tout suite.
It works in most cases because most people have more to hide than what they got caught at so they settle for paying them off and the IRS cost was some research time and a stamp.
But what if 40 million people decide to say "NO MORE"?

Bingo. Several books have laid out in detail how utterly disconnected the 2008 crisis was from Main Street's finances and how very few companies would have actually folded outside of Wall St. Even a lot of the ones considered at grave risk on Wall St. were later revealed to be perfectly capable of weathering the storm minus a few scapegoat employees, who would still walk away as members of the 1%.
In other words, TARP was completely unnecessary. All it did was preserve some bonuses of existing multimillionaires rather than let be a bit inconvenienced. It's almost enough to make you sympathetic with the OWS crowd except I've never heard a single one of them discuss Wall St.'s crimes in any clear rational manner and generally made it clear they didn't understand the actual problem.

I know as some of the tools I've had to use were unable to perform the job unless the safety devices (shields and such) were removed.
So, yeah the 2nd or 3rd time that the device interferes with a project, that'll be it.
(and it may not be the fault of the project as some devices just aren't designed with the work in mind but in showing safety inspectors that the machine is "safe". Safety inspectors don't care if the machine does the job or not.)

It's just a new name. They've been doing it since before I was born.
We're too busy infighting to do anything about it or even make more people aware.

It's been going on since the paleolithic. To be viable within a culture, slavery insists that the ruling class and slaves both work to maintain the status quo. All the crap with LIV was happening with Helots; all the crap with Capitol City -- oops, meant DC -- was happening with Rome. Republics work well until they become prosperous enough that people who are not especially driven, smart, or talented can live well -- then the lackwit idiots with no talents learn that they can vote themselves free shit and the place devolves into another pimp-hand dictatorship that is the more common lot of mankind.

Wow. And if this has been going on in the past, I dodged a bullet by taking grades 1-7 outside the US.

The IRS will now have complete access to your health records. As a matter of fact, they will now be in charge of your records.
We, in the months past, have witnessed first hand the depredations of the IRS in the somewhat minor matter of granting exemptions to conservative organizations.
It is not possible to evaluate this and not draw from it the most dire concerns, as regards combining this perfidy with the power of the medical establishment.
Your SEIU doctors and nurses will now know about your voter registration, the charities to whom you give, and anything else they wish to know. Your doctors will ask if you own firearms, how many, how and where are they stored. Your nurses may take five sticks to get your IV started just for spite, yo damned racist GOPer.
Don't even get me started as to whether or not you will be allowed kidney dialysis or a cornea transplant. Those will be reserved for the Party.
Call me paranoid, but the patterns of abuse are already in place. This is s very bad situation if this train leaves the station, and everyone says it is leaving right now.

Dude, you or I could go in for something minor like a tonsillectomy and while we were under they could just put a dry cleaning bag over our heads.
This shit is so fucked up, I can't even begin to figure out how anyone, in the fucking imponderable depths of their impenetrable ignorance, ever remotely thought it was a good idea.

No problem here. Sounds malware-y. Browser hijacking is a common tactic and screwing up is also common, resulting in a broken setup instead of making the victim looked at the page you've taken them to.

I had a similar thing on Breitbart "conversation" a few minutes ago. I had a pending mozilla update, which flakes the shit out of the browser until you let it do its thing, so I ascribed it to that. I've just let it update and haven't seen any new stability glitches yet.

Every freakin' time Firefox does an update, it says: "do you want to stop right now and update?" and when you say no, it continues to operate in a deliberately flaky manner.

Yep. All these people that think the government should just hand everyone a million bucks has no concept of how that would affect the economy. Costs would simply re-adjust, the "poor" would still be "poor". They would still be bitching about the 1 percenters living in their billion-dollar mansions.
