Because being liberal means that every aspect of life - no matter how mundane, human and apolitical - must be about politics, judging and feeling superior. And yet remaining oblivious to this very aspect of themselves.
Here Jonathon Last calls out a a particularly egregious example of this:
When you live in Washington, one of the things that's supposed to happen is that, by bumping around casually with folks from the other side you learn to empathize with them and come to understand that they put their pants on one leg at a time, too.
So here's a Tweet from a guy who just met Don Rumsfeld:
"Evil"? I'm sorry. Are you fucking kidding?...You know who's evil? Mohammad Atta was evil. And I wouldn't make such a big deal over Geer not being able to make moral distinctions between Donald Rumsfeld and Mohammad Atta, except that he tweeted this on, you know, the fucking anniversary of September 11.
Twelve years before Donald Rumsfeld had the pleasure of meeting Stephen Geer, he spent his morning helping to carry wounded colleagues out of the burning Pentagon.
"Forgetfulness occurs when those who have been long inured to civilized order can no longer remember a time in which they had to wonder whether their crops would grow to maturity without being stolen or their children sold into slavery by a victorious foe."They forget that in time of danger, in the face of the Enemy, they must trust and confide in each other, or perish.
"They forget, in short, that there has ever been a category of human experience called the Enemy. And that, before 9/11, was what had happened to us. The very concept of the Enemy had been banished from our moral and political vocabulary. An enemy was just a friend we hadn't done enough for - yet. Or perhaps there had been a misunderstanding, or an oversight on our part - something that we could correct. And this means that that our first task is that we must try to grasp what the concept of the Enemy really means.
"The Enemy is someone who is willing to die in order to kill you. And while it is true that the Enemy always hates us for a reason - it is his reason, and not ours."

Lee Stranahan: How Liberal Altruism Ruined a Public Park
The short version is that a charity, Love Wins Ministry, has been feeding the homeless in a Raleigh, NC park for a few years and during that time the homeless have turned the park into a hell-hole that decent people avoid. They city got tired of this and finally threatened to to arrest the charity workers if they didn't find an alternate hand-out location.
There's nothing wrong with charity, of course. The problem that the liberals like Think Progress refuse to even acknowledge, however, is the impact that using a public space to feed homeless people has on the rest of the community. It's an issue facing cities across the country, where short sighted 'social justice' policies have created blight and danger. The group Love Wins Ministries has, in fact, been proving free food for the homeless at Moore Park for six years. That means there's a small group of people-many of whom have substance abuse issues-who have been taking advantage of free food given out in a public park for years.
The consequences aren't hard to imagine but thanks to sites like TripAdvisor.com, we don't need to guess how using Moore Park as a public soup-kitchen has worked out in practice; review after review of the place tell the grim story.
Couldn't they find another alternate spot that wouldn't cause the same issues? Well they could but apparently this is about making a fuck-you point to the city:
We appreciate all the ways you have written in to suggest that we could subvert the system, but to do that only admits to the City of Raleigh that its argument is legitimate. We maintain that we have done nothing wrong.
Obama: The NRA and You Gun Nuts Are Causing Gun Violence
We fought a good fight earlier this year, but we came up short, and that means we've got to get back up and go back at it. As long as there are those who make it as easy as possible for dangerous people to get their hands on guns then we've got to work as hard as possible for the sake of our children . . . to do more work to make it harder.
A Rebuttal - Ann Coulter: Why Won't Liberals Deal with the Crazy?
There's been another mass shooting by a crazy person, and liberals still refuse to consider institutionalizing the dangerous mentally ill....But Alexis couldn't be institutionalized because the left has officially certified the mentally ill as "victims," and once you're a victim, all that matters is that you not be "stigmatized."
But here's the problem: Coddling the mentally ill isn't even helping the mentally ill. Ask the sisters of crazy homeless woman "Billie Boggs" how grateful they were to the ACLU for keeping Boggs living on the streets of New York City. Ask the parents of Aaron Alexis, James Holmes (Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooter), Jared Loughner (Tucson, Ariz., mall shooter) or Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech shooter) how happy they are that their sons weren't institutionalized.
Tellingly, throughout the last three decades, the overall homicide rate has been in free fall, thanks to Republican crime policies, from 10 per 100,000 in 1980 to 4 per 100,00 today. (You might even call them "common sense" crime policies.) But the number of mass shootings has skyrocketed from 4 per year, between 1900 and 1970, to 29 per year since then.
Something seems to have gone horribly wrong right around 1970. What could it be? Was it the introduction of bell-bottoms?
That date happens to correlate precisely with when the country began throwing the mentally ill out of institutions in 1969. Your memory of there not being as many mass murders a few decades ago is correct. Your memory of there not being as many homeless people a few decades ago is also correct.

And KU gives him a paid time-out along with hints that he may have mental issues.
She may be fading out of popular culture these days but in her time she was a force who was far more talented that she's remembered for. She wrote most of her most famous lines and didn't even start acting until she was almost 40. Much of Madonna's career is really just an update of what West already did.
Years before Madonna made waves with her erotic coffee table conversation piece "Sex", West wrote, produced and starred in a 1926 play by the same name. It marked her debut on Broadway and ran for nearly 400 performances before the New York City Police department raided the theater and arrested her for "corrupting the morals of youth." She was sentenced to 10 days in jail, and enjoyed meals with the warden and his wife. She must have made a good impression, because she was released after serving 8 days due to good behavior. The scandal didn't hurt West's career at all, and raised her profile.
NASA is Running Out of Plutonium
PU-238 (which isn't the more fun nuke-you-from-orbit PU-239 type) is practically the perfect fuel for long-term space probes. The Russians promised to keep making it for us twenty years ago but haven't been able to deliver and that's a problem.
The country's scientific stockpile has dwindled to around 36 pounds. To put that in perspective, the battery that powers NASA's Curiosity rover, which is currently studying the surface of Mars, contains roughly 10 pounds of plutonium, and what's left has already been spoken for and then some. The implications for space exploration are dire: No more plutonium-238 means not exploring perhaps 99 percent of the solar system. In effect, much of NASA's $1.5 billion-a-year (and shrinking) planetary science program is running out of time. The nuclear crisis is so bad that affected researchers know it simply as "The Problem."
Sometimes imagination and taxidermy don't really mix.

The fruits of the Left's constant demonization of certain people (like us) will be really ugly.
It's already beginning to rear its ugly head with rape fantasies on well-known Conservative women.
In time it will be okay to stone a conservative...because, yeah, they're evil and not really people.

"Since life has been irremediably spoiled for the believer, he has relatively little hesitation about spoiling it for others. This gives him an advantage. He can be unscrupulous under the disguise of idealism. His self-righteousness permits him to convince himself that he is destroying people for their own good. Josef Goebbels felt it his duty to unleash volcanic passions, outbreaks of rage, to set masses of people on the march, to organize hatred and despair with ice-cold calculation."
Eric Hoffer in The True Believer which is quoted in Sklar's book has this to say - "It seems that when we are oppressed by the knowledge of our worthlessness we do not see ourselves as lower than some and higher than others, but as lower than the lowest of mankind. We hate then the whole world, and we would pour our wrath upon the whole of creation."

Which is what it always sounds like. Quantum theory already hurts my head.
It isn't a lack of tech.
If you do not detect electrons before they hit the two slits, they act like a wave, with diffraction patterns formed at the detector outside the slits.
If you place a detector before the grid, the electrons either go through one grid, or the other, like a "normal" particle.
The electron does not "think". You can know an electron's exact position, or its energy state, but not both at the same time. And yes, Quantum Mechanics takes Causality out and shoot it dead, despite what apologists like Greene would like to think.

"Black magic, white magic - Hitler is the typical person with no firm foundation, with all the shortcomings of the superficial, of the man without reverence, quick to judge and quick to condemn. He is of those with no spiritual tradition, who, being caught by the first substitute for it they meet, hold tenaciously to that, least they fall back into Nothingness. He belongs also to the type of German who is starving for the unattainable. For all those who have been unsuccessful in the battle of life National Socialism is the great worker of magic. And Hitler himself is the first of these; thus he has become the master-enchanter and the high priest of the religious mysteries of Nazidom."

Barack Obama has still never really sold the American people on anything but himself.
For Obama supporters, the question has become frustrating and frequent: how can the man and the team who made a freshman senator the countryÂ’s first black president, and kept people with him despite Great Depression-level unemployment, have failed to truly turn public opinion around on a single difficult issue?
Twice, they turned Candidate Obama into a movement. But they havenÂ’t been able to turn President Obama into more than an inclination.
The guy is a campaigner, but no politician who knows how to negotiate. LBJ would be picking him up by his ears because that would be all heÂ’s good for.

Outgoing chief commissioner Tim Flannery, who was told yesterday morning he had lost his $180,000-a-year, part-time role, said abolishing the publicly funded body was “the government’s prerogative” but he would not be silenced. …
Scrapping the Climate Commission is expected to save taxpayers $580,000 this financial year and $1.6 million in following years. Â…
The changes to the commission came as the government pursued plans to wind up the $10 billion Clean Energy Finance Corporation, created by Labor to fund renewable energy projects that would otherwise struggle to get commercial backing.
Given AustraliaÂ’s experience (not to mention SpainÂ’s experience with Green jobs), only a idiot would continue with a Carbon Control regime.
President Barack Obama is that idiot.

Could use some advice. Does anyone have what could be called "alternative" advice for shredding/destroying documents, besides just using a shredder? I have one but it's nowhere near able to handle the near-1,000 sheets I have to destroy; it's strictly a consumer-level, low-duty piece o'crap.
Was thinking I could maybe just tear up most of my sheets into small pieces, then run then all through the washing machine with hot water. Wouldn't that pretty much gelatinize the sheets, or could they still be deciphered from? And would it hurt the washer? Lord knows I don't need that kind of expense, but at the same time I can't believe my papers would be readable after the "laundry treatment" either.
Does that sound do-able without causing too much trouble? Or any other ideas??

I want to know the most pressing and important long term unanswered question relating to the AoSHQ:
How is that the top ten sock puppeteers never wind up on the top ten commenter list?
Well its simple math really. Look at the numbers. If you want to be at the top of the sockpuppet list, all you need to do is make a total of 57 comments, just that each one needs to be with a different sockpuppet. So essentially 57 comments spread over 7 days. Meanwhile if you want to be at the top of the commenting list (while it varies) you basically need to be making the same number of posts every day that you would to top the sockpuppet. Even to just break the top ten comments that still nearly 38 posts per day.
And really who knows what weird sort of formula Maet is using anyways. 399 posts divided by 7 days equals 57 posts/day not 55.89

As a regular top 10 sockpuppeter and a never-top 10 ten commenter, I would say that good sockpuppetry is to commenting as death by bunga bunga is to to plain old bunga bunga.

PacBell, AT&T, whatever they call the baseball park now, is new and closer to downtown.
Right. So the baseball stadium took the PacBell/AT&T name with it, and Candlestick reverted to being Candlestick while they build the new one in Santa Clara.

This the Codex Sinaiticus? *googles* Yep, it is, but the Sinai monks deny it. Who's to say.
This wouldn't happen in a synagogue, by the way. Jews never throw out their junk Torah scrolls; they put them in a closet called a "geniza". The Cairo Geniza stored not only Torah but all manner of Jewish texts - even Essenic texts. They had a Dead Sea Scroll before anyone had even thought of looking at the Dead Sea caves.

Sven, if you're lurking -- Ace has had a recurring thing about "bringing it", to the point that I've done several snarky "bring it" comments. The thing is, with this highly vocal, critical, opinionated, funny, passionate, and weird crowd that we call the "Moron Horde", anything that you do will get deluged with a combination of praise, attaboys, scorn, riffing, parody, and batshittery -- and that includes anything that the COBs put up.
Now, like a batch of fudge with just a little bit of catshit dropped into the mix, it really doesn't take much abuse to make you wonder if being an unpaid (so far as I know) volunteer is worth the hassle. And if you're running a show staffed by unpaid volunteers (like Ace is), you'd probably seem to be a bit overprotective about them....because there is so little besides pride in their accomplishments to keep them accomplishing. And Gabe does, in fact, "bring it" -- he's consistently opening the shop at some ungodly hour of the morning, so that the proprietor doesn't have to be there before the crack of noon.
Please consider how personally demeaning it would be if you did something every day, for free, at some insane time where you could have been rushing out the door to get to work.....and someone called it "The Daily Ipecac". That's not an argument for something better, that's not an argument against what was written -- it's a straightforward negation of Gabe's effort....to keep AoSHQ going. Now, if you'd said, "here's another Boehner press release....", or "I thought we were above the DC muddle about whether an opposition party might actually have to oppose anything", you might have done some good in actually moving Gabe a little bit off his hobby horse -- or, at least, lead him to mull over his "messaging"......and, you almost certainly wouldn't have gotten banned.
Similarly, unless the thread were actually about cheesy, bubble-gum pop, leftist-agenda-forwarding prime-time TV shows, I don't see where attaching someone to one isn't a wee bit personal.
I've met Gabe and think he's a great guy -- I've actually (fingers crossed that my luck holds -- the next could be a stalker) never met a moron IRL that I didn't like. He's annoyed the hell out of me at times -- for a while, it seemed like 90% of what he wrote was gay marriage, gay marriage, and more gay marriage -- but, y'know....<page dn>. He's providing a valuable service, even as he bugs the shit out of me, by providing a window into what the dwellers of Capitol City actually think about how all this plays to the hinterlands (rotates index finger near temple). And he opens the door and puts out the welcome mat every freakin' day, while our beloved Ace sleeps off another manic episode.
So, Sven -- if you're out there -- take a bit of time, cool off, look at the big picture.....and come back and bullshit with us. If you tell the Powers That Be that you "get" what pushed the limits (feel free to cut'n'paste from this), you'll be back on in no time.
And if you think I'm an insufferable asshole suckup who shouldn't poke his nose in, please let me know.

Also: we have been supposedly dismantling and destroying thousands of plutonium nukes since the early 90's.
That plutonium has to go somewhere.
Ditto the plutonium in breeder reactors.
Pu-239's halflife is about 24,000 years, so it's still useful for power generation....
Where is it?
Is this a bureaucratic turf thing?

I think the theoretical "s" value needs some refinements.
Everyone is a complete idiot about a vast number of things (perhaps all things), but might have competence in other areas.
ex. I have an uncle who is an adept professional baker, knows about auto repair, yet has managed to have THREE of the houses he's lived in burn down due to "electrical problems".
All were older places with traditional old school Edison fuse panels. Its not insurance fires, he took loses and great inconvenience each time.
It seems he just doesn't understand that blown fuses indicate problems or circuit overload. So when he overloads some ancient 15A circuit on 14ga wire and repeatedly pops fuses, he just screws in any fuse that's laying around bigger than a 15A and blithely goes on his way (like chicken, he thinks "parts is parts") .
Once he gets up to a 25-30A fuse, the places, quite predictably, start to burn down as the scorching hot cable starts torching wood structural members.
Its like he's got a mysterious brain cloud when it comes to anything electrical.

If burning the documents is out of the question, buy an old blender at Value Village, fill it half full of water, and feed strips of paper in to pulp them. Having the whole stack of paper soaking in a tub of water for several days beforehand would greatly speed the process.

Classification time!
Gabe is on the Right, but only to the extent that 1990s Andrew Sullivan was on the Right. (Note, I am not saying that Gabe is anything like Sullivan 2.0; Gabe is sane, Sullivan is not anymore.)
"The Right" does not mean "Conservative".
"Conservative" is a subset of "the Right" - and it happens to be one of those subsets which looks at homosexuality as an unfortunate accident of nature, not an "orientation" deserving of equality. (Disclosure: I happen to be in another of those subsets, one of the Dark-Enlightenment subsets. I'm not Conservative either, but I'm also not like Gabe.)
Ace is on the Right and AoSHQ has a lot of conservative commenters, but it is not a Conservative blog. It's more libertarian. It's more Gabe-friendly than Conservative-friendly (or Dark-Enlightenment-friendly, G-d forbid).
So if you are a Conservative posting here, you have to accept your lot in life, that Gabe outranks you.
Since I am Dark-Enlightenment, I completely understand the concepts of sovereignty and hierarchy. Ace is simply the King of this joint and Gabe (and Maet) rank among his nobles. We are guests here, not even serfs.

He was personally pleased by the decision, yes, but that wasn't why he was jumping up and down. He correctly, exactly, predicted the decision and the reasoning of a case that most considered legally...jumbled.
But people just jumped on what they thought they knew.

My understanding is that the reason so many hostages died from the gas is that the Russian soldiers pulled them out and left them on their backs instead of the on-the-side recovery position. They were so anesthetized that their airway collapsed and they suffocated before doctors got around to them.

But he at least has balls, why the constant misinformation and bias and quotes from local leftist rags here in AZ to smear this man? Like many of us I suspected a political or personal bias I did not appreciate, and especially as I had always respected Gabe's intellect.

I think what happens is people have a preconcieved idea of what Gabe is and what he means when he writes.
For example: the gay marriage decision from the SupCt. Yes Gabe was very happy. I actually talked to him about it away from the site. He was personally pleased by the decision, yes, but that wasn't why he was jumping up and down. He correctly, exactly, predicted the decision and the reasoning of a case that most considered legally...jumbled.
But people just jumped on what they thought they knew.
Yeah, Gabe may come in sneering and striking, so would I. A crapload of commenters on this site seem to think it makes them big dogs to shit all over Gabe. So yeah, he's pissy and combative from the start. I don't blame him a bit.
I've talked to Gabe quite a bit away from the site and I got to meet and hang out with him at the Moron Meetup. He's a good dude. I like him. I consider him a friend.
Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at September 23, 2013 12:30 AM (GEICT)
I met Gabe at a moron meetup in deepest, darkest Berkeley....during the height of his "gay marriage" mania....and, shouting over the ambient noise, I expressed the opinion that we'd do better as a society to fix an institution where a large percentage failed, many avoided it [the BH and I are working on our third decade together.....unmarried], modifications are myriad [prenups], and the laws were so opaque that rational consideration of alternatives was difficult [e.g. tax consequences of "marriage penalty"]....before extending it to a whole new group of people. It's not that I wished those people ill -- I was avoiding the institution, myself, despite being thoroughly qualified for it -- it's that the additional strain was unlikely to bolster the shaky foundations.
I don't know that Gabe totally grokked the core of my exposition, or just couldn't hear it, or something in-between. What I do know is that he said his thing, I said my thing, we're both morons, and he's all right in my book.

He was also an epileptic. In pagan Arabia, that might actually *protect* him. Or not.
Also he had lots of uncles. The hadith says he liked Hamza and al-Abbas; but he pretty much threw Abu Talib under the bus. ("Abu Lahab" might not exist. Or might be an alternate kunya for Abu Talib.)
So he may have been buggered once or twice but not passed around.
Since all of this is based on the hadith (except for the epileptic part, which all the Greek sources agree on) it is speculative at best.

Mohamed was an orphan. Because of this he was passed around sexually as a child.
Didn't know that. He was also an epileptic and "received," much of the Koran from an "angel," while in epileptic seizures. Similar to Nietzsche who had terrible headaches and psychological problems, his philosophical work laid the foundation for what happened to Germany under Hitler...another mad writer that set the world aflame. Beware of these compulsive writers (with a message to humanity). Unless sanctioned by the true witness of blood, sacrifice and history there writings are from the abyss.

Yes cobs are held to a different standard than commenters. They're allowed far greater latitude - but have to be able to justify their actions to Ace.
Why? Because of the great unfairness of life. And because they have Ace's trust and are willing to show up every day and keep Ace's blog running for no pay.

Ahhh.....unfortunately, I was hoping for something a bit more adventurous.
When I was a kid, I thought about maybe seeing some of Mexico but figured that the USSR was never going to happen. As it turns out, I've been to Saint Petersburg and may never get to Mexico City. I may never see Cairo or the pyramids, Petra or Beirut....things change. And I was asking in hopes that Kabul might ever be a city to visit. From what I understand (in the "monitoring but not seriously considering mode"), I could visit Kirkuk today -- but not Baghdad or Damascus.
I was hoping that your integration with things might let you see things in the "real" Kabul that would be worth seeing, if it ever opened up to frequent-flyer dipshits with T-shirts and cameras.

Only 1-story here. JAF and BAF have some 2-story buildings, ISAF has a couple 3 or 4. Most of it was built by local contractors, I wouldn't trust it more than about 2 floors up.

>>> Bomber, are you able to comment on the situation of members of the ANA going Taliban and killing allies?
I don't deal with them much. All my Afghans are provincial government officials, and unarmed. Not sure the latest details (other than it was the base I was at last deployment). But a lot of Army advisors are assholes. That doesn't mix well with a backwards society where "personal honor" is just about the only thing they have. You can talk shit to a US private and he'll change his behavior. You do that with a Pashtun straight out of the mountains, and he'll shoot your ass first chance he gets, even if he knows he's gonna die. A lot of these green-on-blue are just pissed off Afghans, not Taliban.

Battalion Commander that I work with told me when he got here, "We're not here to win this, we're just here to wait till it's over." Pissed me off at the time, but he's right. We sit in FOBs and wait for the election, and wait for Obama and Karzai to work out the BSA. With any luck, we'll fuck this up just like we did the Iraq SOFA, and we will all go home next summer. I'm not holding my breath on that though.

It depends how common the practice is in your line. Having grandparents who were first cousins is probably not going to hurt you. Being able to point to such a marriage in your ancestry in almost every generations is just begging for some nasty genes to manifest the wrong way.

Contrary to common belief occasional first cousin marriage has essentially no extra risk of birth defects or genetic disorders. But doing it regularly for a few generations will lead to problems. And not just genetic ones. There's a good amount of evidence that common cousin marriage leads to hyper-tribalism and other social pathologies e.g. most of the Arab world.
