It's time for a little retro-Ace....
In which Ace explains his journey along the road to hating the filthy Snow-Wops.
I don't remember when my Pappy first taught me hate -- hatred of the icicle-squating Scandi snow-wops. But I'll always thank him for it.One of my earliest memories is of watching the Muppet Show, and happily laughing along to the Swedish Chef. Hur-de-ver-de-verd-e-verr, the Swedish Chef said. And I, not knowing any better, merrily repeated his dirty Scandi gutter-talk. "Hur-de-verd-de-verd-e-verr," I said along.
My Pappy walked in, agahst, and shook his head in disgust. "They're goddamned trying to brainwash these kids," he said. The next day, the television was gone, and in place of the tv was a record player and a bunch of Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx albums. "You listen to these guys," my Pappy said. "They don't truck with any goddamned Scandi luge-jockeys."
Along with their disgusting sub-human ways.
Another time I was eating dinner, but wouldn't eat my vegetables. "There are children starving in Scandinavia, you know," my Pappy told me."So I should eat the vegetables, and not waste them?" I asked.
"Nah, throw 'em out, let the 'possums have at them," he said. "Let the filthy Loki-lovers eat fucking snow. Human food would be wasted on them."
A Correction on Ann Coulter's Column From Last Night
Well Ann is rarely wrong but Neo-neocon points out that the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill was not strictly a liberal cause. There had been some pretty egregious abuse of the involuntary commitment process in the past and this ultimately led to multiple groups agreeing to end this policy for their own reasons.
Ann Coulter is not entirely correct about deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill having been a liberal movement. Sure, liberals have defended it and pushed it, but originally it was libertarians who spearheaded the movement. Then their ideas were taken up by the left. So it was a fusion of the two groups, even though otherwise they may be at loggerheads (similar fusions have occurred with the movement to legalize marijuana, just to take one example). The grand-daddy of the movement to "liberate" the mentally ill was Dr. Thomas Szasz, who was a fervent libertarian (he did not believe there was such a thing as "mental illness" ). See this article for more:

Remembering the Lod Airport Massacre
But the Lod massacre remains one of the most terrifying in the long list of terrorist attacks that have followed, and at the time it was perpetrated (1972) it was especially horrific. Masterminded by the PLO (specifically, its hard left wing the PLFP), it was also a prelude to the much-more-famous Munich Olympics massacre that gripped the world just a few short months later. The PLO was involved in both, but the Lod massacre featured unusual perpetrators for that organization, and that was part of its shock value: leftist Japanese gunmen.
...[T]hree inconspicuous Japanese men dressed in business suits disembarked Air France Flight 132 from Rome and strolled into the baggage claim area. After retrieving what appeared to be violin cases, the men pulled out machine guns, opened fire and threw grenades indiscriminately at the crowds of people.
The gunmen killed 26 people: 17 Christian pilgrims from Puerto Rico, one Canadian citizen, and eight Israelis, and 80 people were injured

People often forget that back in the 70s there was a lot of crazy terrorist partnerships across national and ideological lines and that the Left has been comfortable with Arab terrorism for a long time.
And of course the Axis of Evil had to be involved as well:
In 2008, the eight surviving children of Carmelo Calderón Molina, who was killed in the attack, and Pablo Tirado, son of survivor Pablo Tirado Ayala, who was wounded in the attack, filed a lawsuit at the U.S. Federal Courthouse in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They sued the government of North Korea for providing material support to the PFLP and the JRA, and for planning the attack. The plaintiffs claimed a right to sue the North Korean government based on the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976. Preliminary hearings to examine evidence began on December 2, 2009, with district judge Francisco Besosa presiding. The North Korean government did not respond to the lawsuit and had no representatives present. The victim's families were represented by attorneys from the Shurat HaDin Israel Law Center, including its founder, Nitsana Darshan-Leitner.
In July 2010, the U.S. court ordered North Korea to pay US$378 million to families as compensation for the terror attack.
Inside Baseball, The Beatles, and Knowing the Guitar
Here's the inside baseball for you. In the past I played for money, often on short notice, sometimes among total strangers, so I notice such things: About eight bars into the song, Glenn realizes that the bass player doesn't know the song. You can see him turn his torso towards the laggard, and his eyes recognize the mild sort of panic in the other musician's eyes. He stays turned through one verse, making very deliberate chord shapes way down the neck, so that the bass player can see them. A good bass player knows something about the guitar, and by looking at the position of the fingers and the spot on the neck, he can sort out the chord changes. Once around should do it, and does. If you want to know what being a bandleader is like, Glenn is trying to sing like Paul McCartney, play like John Lennon, and coax George Harrison through playing the bass at the same time. If he's like me, or most any other human, he's desperately trying to remember the words at the same time.
More here:
So I offer the Dwight Twilley Theorem to you, my readers. Here goes:If an infinite number of garage bands are formed after watching a Beatles movie, and they hit notes at random on Telecasters and sing doggerel for an infinite amount of time, they'll eventually get Casey Kasem to utter their name on AM radio after midnight on Sunday, even if their bass player doesn't know what to do with his hands.
The corollary to this theorem is: Only the music store and Yoko Ono will end up with any money.
If you were a killer and wanted to lure in victims through Craigslist, how would you do it? Well Richard 'Jack' Beasley eventually found the perfect pitch to keep ideal victims coming to him along with all their possessions.
Davis wasn't the only person to answer the Craigslist ad. More than 100 people applied for the caretaker job -- a fact that Jack was careful to cite in his e-mails back to the applicants. He wanted to make sure that they knew the position was highly sought-after. Jack had a specific type of candidate in mind: a middle-aged man who had never been married or was recently divorced, and who had no strong family connections. Someone who had a life he could easily walk away from. "If picked I will need you to start quickly," he would write in his e-mails.
Jack painstakingly designed the ad to conjure a very particular male fantasy: the cowboy or rancher, out in the open country, herding cattle, mending fences, hunting game -- living a dream that could transform a post-recession drifter into a timeless American icon. From the many discarded drafts of the ad that investigators later found, it was clear that Jack was searching for just the right pitch to catch a certain kind of man's eye.
A Tale of Two Navy Undersecretaries
Here is the CV of Bob Work who left in March:
- NROTC type, commissioned as a 2LT in the USMC in 1974.
- 27 years active duty service in the Marines. Commanded an artillery battalion, then Camp Fuji.

We're in the very best of hands.
5 Iconic Characters That Were Only Supposed to Be Bit Parts
And in this case went on to have their own 11 season series:
Frasier Crane was basically his opposite -- a stuffy, pompous rich guy who didn't care much for the working class functional alcoholics who hung around at Cheers. The plan was that he would stick around for a few days until the others told him to piss off and Diane could come to her senses.
And no one was more eager for this to happen than Long, who hated Grammer and was constantly demanding he be written out of the show as quickly as possible. But you know who hated Long in return? The writers, who Grammer says kept the character around purely out of spite. If Long had liked him, or even been less of a horrible person, maybe they'd have just let Frasier drop off the map. Of course, that might be Grammer not giving himself enough credit -- the producers say they just loved what Grammer did with the character, which is what they would say since it sounds better than "The entire show was just our experiment to see if we could cause Shelley Long to have a nervous breakdown."

Ted Turner: Men Should Be Barred From Political Office For 100 Years
TED TURNER: Well, I came up with the idea at least 20 years ago that we needed more women in politics. It would take a different turn. And I suggested that men be barred from political office. They could do everything else, be president of universities, business leaders, but they just couldn't serve in any elected position for 100 years.[Laughter and applause]
I think we'd have a lot more emphasis on education and healthcare and a lot less on Army and the Navy and the Marine Corps.
[Laughter and applause]
It would be a very positive step, but it hasn't happened yet. But it still might. And then they just toss in the towel. They can't come up with a budget.
Yep still crazy and a fool after all these years.

Long seems like a bitch, and it's a good thing the writers never dumped Frasier's character from the show. How awesome was it when the writers decided to cast Bebe Neuwirth as Frasier's love interest thereby cementing his presence on the show even more?

Ted's not addressing the real issue. His father used to beat Ted until Ted was bloody, and then his father made Ted beat him until he was bloody.
I saw Ted reveal this on 60 Minutes. His father said, and I quote, "Now you do me."
But Ted loves his father, he said. Because his father was a great man.
All leftists have Daddy issues. It's axiomatic.

It's easy if you fly,
No virgins hump us,
And not a drop of rye,
Imagine all of Islam
without heavenly laysÂ…
Imagine there's no Koran,
It isnÂ’t hardly true,
Nothing to bomb or burn for,
No Ayatollahs too,
Imagine all of Islam
living the rule of lawÂ…
Imagine deserts blooming,
I wonder how Jews can,
Using soap and hot water,
Instead of toilet hand,
imagine all of Islam
Sparing the ferengi dogsÂ…
You may say IÂ’m an infidel,
but IÂ’m not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
When the West has really won.

Nein. Gospel truth. Ted was too crazy for JANE FONDA. Think about that.
Pat Buchanan's father burned him with matches to show him what the pain of hellfire was like. To this day, Pat calls his father "the finest man I ever knew."
Having grown up with a two-fisted father myself, I sympathize with these poor fucks who can't admit to themselves that their dads were monsters.
I sympathize, but only up to a certain point. If you don't repudiate the guy, you end of replicating what he did. Ted was extremely controlling of Jane, to a psychotic degree. He's a basket case. That always happens when you don't admit the truth to yourself.

I started out playing bass.. and it is fairly easy to figure out the chord progressions - at least enough to get by - as long as you have a good guitarist helping you out.
It's a lot harder if you are also the lead singer.
I have to give a shout out to musicians who play a lot.

I do freelance. For two partners in a firm. Have never met either in person.
Well, I work with Boss A 75% of the time, Boss B, 25% of the time. Boss A has been stressed, and the other day, got all pissy over something innocuous I said RE: Boss B. Went on a bit of tirade.
Gist of it: I am kind ruining the bromance between them. Boss A does not like the fact that Boss B and I get along so easily. Here is a rundown:
Boss A: drives an Audi, trophy wife, was in therapy for a long time
Boss B: drinks tequila, likes funny hats and is always good for an amusing anecdote.
I am totally screwed, and have resigned myself to the fact that I can never be within 250 miles of either of them if I want to keep receiving a paycheck.
Without even doing anything, I have somehow screwed with the minds of two men that I have never been in the same state with.
At least, that's what it seems like.

(And if you disagree, let's just run through the best NON-ALBUM singles from those three bands -- that is, tracks that we reflexively associate with them but which never even made it onto one of their proper albums. The Beatles: "She Loves You," "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "I Feel Fine," "We Can Work It Out," "Paperback Writer," "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane," "All You Need Is Love," "Hello, Goodbye," "Hey Jude"; The Rolling Stones: "I Wanna Be Your Man," "It's All Over Now," "The Last Time," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Get Off Of My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown," "Paint It, Black," "Let's Spend The Night Together," "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?," "We Love You," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Honky Tonk Women"; The Who: "I Can't Explain," "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," "Substitute," "I'm A Boy," "Happy Jack," "Pictures Of Lily," "Dogs," "Magic Bus," "The Seeker," "Let's See Action," "Join Together," "Relay.")
Okay, so after that throat-clearing parenthetical -- and if you consider yourself a fan of rock music but haven't heard every single one of the songs I just named, it's time to reconsider -- here are the REST of the best singles acts in history:
- The Beach Boys
- The Hollies
- The Smiths
- The Zombies
- Creedence Clearwater Revival
- The Buzzcocks
- New Order
- The Jam
- Jethro Tull (1968-1971)
- The Kinks
- Pavement
- Suede
- Radiohead
Anyone disagree? Well then FUCK YOU, by which I mean please tell me why I'm wrong! ;-)
And happy ONT everyone.

Ok, this is funny. One of you morons must write for our local paper. There were some blue footed boobies spotted on the ocean and they usually don't come this far north. This is a direct quote:
“But while we’re enjoying looking for them, ... it’s probably not good for the boobies,” Pereksta said. “For all of them to move this far up north, there’s got to be something wrong.”

I firmly believe that Bush is a good man and did the things he did because he thought them right but in retrospect he set the conservative cause back a decade. His profligate spending and two senseless wars have given the statists and marxists the opportunity to deliver the coup-de-grace to the American Constitutional Republic.
We are living in dark and foreboding times and it was Bush who set us on this course.

Can't tell if you're kidding or not, but The Monkees are a damn fine band and a pretty great story to boot: a bunch of guys put together as actors who rebelled against corporate control and actually became a band, and a pretty darn great one at that. Their first two albums (the ones with most of their famous singles) are meh middling corporate pop -- still not too bad, mind you -- but it's the four records they made AFTER that, once they'd declared artistic independence, started playing their own instruments, producing their own sessions, and writing their own songs, that stand up next to almost any other '60s albums. Headquarters, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd., The Birds The Bees & The Monkees, and especially Head are all fanfuckingtastic and I don't care what hip criticism has told you to think.
Seriously, JUST FUCKING LISTEN TO THIS SONG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ArviuaZb_A
That's country-rock a full two years before the genre was supposed to exist.
Or this, which is better than most any pop song recorded by a group not called the Beatles, Stones, or Who from the 1960s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4W01V1krWo

(And if you disagree, let's just run through the best NON-ALBUM singles from those three bands -- that is, tracks that we reflexively associate with them but which never even made it onto one of their proper albums. The Beatles: "She Loves You," "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "I Feel Fine," "We Can Work It Out," "Paperback Writer," "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane," "All You Need Is Love," "Hello, Goodbye," "Hey Jude"; The Rolling Stones: "I Wanna Be Your Man," "It's All Over Now," "The Last Time," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Get Off Of My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown," "Paint It, Black," "Let's Spend The Night Together," "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?," "We Love You," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Honky Tonk Women";
Posted by: Jeff B. at September 24, 2013 12:04 AM
That gets a bit convoluted with the Beatles and Stone's LP's, particularly the Stones. A bunch of those singles did go onto "proper" LP's, depending upon one's definition of "proper". The Beatles and Stones have each got 2 very different discographies... UK releases and US releases. "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" was on "Meet The Beatles"... which really is a "proper" LP, a US one. By and large, The Beatles UK catalogue is "superior" to the US one, in that The UK LP's had more tracks, generally... but, the US catalogue got more LP's out of stretching out the songs. Not many Beatles singles failed to make it onto US (non compilation) LP's, "I wanna be your Man" and "Paperback Writer" being 2. "All you need is Love", "Strawberry Fields" and Penny LAne" went onto "Magical Mystery Tour" in The US... which is really a "proper" LP.
With the Stones, The US catalogue is far superior to te
he UK one, with "Paint it Black" going on "Aftermath", "Get off of my cloud" on "December's Children" and "Last Time + "Satisfaction" going on "Out of their Heads. "Honkey Tonk Women" never got put on a regular LP and neither did "Jumping Jack Flash". Up to about '67 the Beatles and Stones catalogue was subject to being cut up and released differently in the US and the UK. With both bands, during that period, the concept of doing studio recordings of songs... for a specific LP, other than "the next one", was pretty vague. They knew how it worked and usually just recorde a bunch of stuff, to be realeased on... whatever. They sometimes had a prefernce for the packaging, sometimes not. By '67 Both groups werwe definitely working with LP tracklisting in mind.

We went to war with Iraq under a very clear directive--boot Saddam the hell out of Kuwait. I don't think the coalition would have stayed together if we had escalated to the extent of removing Hussein.
As such, the op WAS a success--with the quibble that the Highway Of Death got cut short. We could have atritted Hussein's forces into ineffectiveness with another 12 hours.
Posted by: irongrampa at September 23, 2013 08:28 PM (SAMxH)
What have we gained for undertaking those two wars?
Nothing except spending blood and treasure for absolutely no gain.
And in the process we have enacted the very laws that the statists are using to attack and marginalize us.
This is what gave Obama his platform to gain political power.
So yes it was a blunder of epic proportions.

Yeah, I should have been clearer in my original post, but I only consider the the UK discographies to be legitimate. The US bastardizations don't exist as far as I'm concerned -- never had to deal with The Beatles' stuff on CD as a kid and I taught myself to understand the Stones' early ABKCO discs as frankenstein's monsters that I'd reburn into their proper UK order and listen in that way.
In particular the US version of Aftermath is a disgrace compared to the UK one: it removes "Mother's Little Helper" and adds "Paint It Black" (an even swap in terms of objective quality, but "Paint It Black" just screamed "non-album single" to me even before I knew it was originally meant as such), but then goes on to simply REMOVE four more songs and, even more infuriatingly, edit another great one ("Out Of Time"). I pity people who grew up on the US Aftermath, it's a pale shadow of the intended artistic effect of the UK version.
Posted by: Jeff B. at September 23, 2013 08:33 PM (n/+FT)
Absolutely no gain? Ask AQ if what we did was ineffective.
The blunder part cannot be attributed to Bush. The AFTERMATH of BOTH wars can be laid at Obama"s feet.

Correction, 1966 was when both bands started to record with a set tracklisting in mind... seriously, with "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" with the Beatles and "Aftermath" and "Between the buttons" with the Stones. But the UK and US tracks were still switched around in most cases. 1967 was when they both recorded "albums" that remained the same on both sides of the atlantic.

Your handle is "Freaked Out!" and you've namechecked "conceptual continuity," so there's roughly a 0.00% chance you're not a Frank Zappa fan. Therefore, I'm assuming you know that Zappa was (in violation of pretty much every expectation people might have) actually a fan of The Monkees and one of their only early defenders among 'serious musicians' when people started screaming about how they didn't play on their early records. He appeared on their show (in a pretty hilarious bit) and also made a cameo in Head (the totally fucked-up Monkees movie written by Jack Nicholson -- yes, THAT Jack Nicholson).

You know, I'm of two minds on this mental illness/forced treatment thing. One the one hand, it's true that we've got a problem. There are many people who should be in an institution, locked up and away and treated if possible.
On the other hand, forced committed is subject to horrible abuses. Totalitarians just love to make disagreement with the regime a mental illness subject to forced "treatment" by the state. I think in Cuba "aversion to socialism" is still an official mental disorder.
Just imagine what our own totalitarian wannabes would do if unchecked. Conservatism would become a mental illness. Are you part of the "gun culture"? Must be something wrong with you. No sane person would think that way. And what are these crazy, anarchist political views you are exposing your children to? No sane person would do that. You must have anger issues or something for being against the benevolent state's good intentions for you and your family.
And look at it today. We've got more people on all sorts of pyschoactive drugs than ever before. There's an alarming number of children being prescribed powerful anti-pyschotic drugs.
That's all thanks to Pharma trying to sell as many drugs as they can and co-opting the docs and community into classifying just about anything as a disorder.
So on the one hand, we've got truly batshit insane people running around the streets and on the other we're drugging untold numbers of kids for trivial reaons and making being a young boy itself a mental disorder.

As Ann Coulter has said, "Kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity"
Since we can't do that we should have used airstrikes and the emerging drones to keep them bottled up instead of spending trillions of dollars and costing thousands of lives to so that one day we can be the air force of the very people who perpetrated 9/11.

They sure started that way. But as it turns out, they had minds and lives and aspirations of their own, and after five months as a corporate creation they literally got their "musical director" (Don Kirschner) fired. (Mike Nesmith famously put his fist through a wall in front of Kirschner and told him "that should have been your fucking face.") After that they played their own instruments, did their own arrangements and productions (guided mostly by Tork), recorded far more of their own songs (particularly Nesmith, who turned out to be quite the gifted country-rock and psychedelic writer), and subverted their own plastic image at every opportunity.
They weren't The Greatest Band Of All Time or anything, but trust me: that music is fantastic. If you don't believe me, try listening to this and tell me it isn't gorgeous (Neil Young guests on guitar): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWLasUfJnWs

I'm an OCD fan of FZ when he was with the original Mothers of Invention (i.e. 1965-1969), to the point where I have literally every single official release, boxed set, and every concert recording by that group. The '67-'68 repertoire in particular (largely instrumental) is pure diamond-quality as far as I'm concerned, and that includes the supposedly 'difficult' shit like the MOI's version of Edgard Varese's "Octandre" and whatnot. In particular, I consider "Holiday In Berlin" and "Aybe Sea"/"The Little House I Used To Live In" to be the absolute peak of everything Zappa ever brought to the table compositionally. (It's no surprise that Burnt Weeny Sandwich is my favorite record, with Uncle Meat a close second.)
I have most of his post-1970 work, but I just don't enjoy it nearly as much, except when it's largely instrumental. Roxy And Elsewhere, One Size Fits All, the guitar albums...all great stuff. But I fuckin' loathe the pandering smut like Over-Nite Sensation, etc.

The US Stones catalogue kicks ass. Overall, I mean. The Stones UK sets suffer more than the Beatles from "leave the singles off" syndrome. You get fewer tracks on average, per LP, but... you get killer songs included. Plus there are a couple of excellent LP's like "Now" and "December's Children" that didn't get UK release. "Between the Buttons"? US release slaughters the UK one. It's got "Ruby Tuesday" and "Let's spend..." on it. "Please go home" and "Backstreet Girl" from the UK one are great and in a perfect world, would be on the US one also, but, having to choose... the singles win out.
"Aftermath" is indeed a mixed bag. Overall, the UK one is better. The tracks dropped to be included on "flowers" weakens the LP quite a bit. The upside though is "Paint it Black". Single or no, havinf "Aftermath" kick off with PIB is like "Brown Sugar" on SF or "Sympathy" on BB. Awesome. I have both vinyl versions of Aftermath and like them both. But, yeah the UK one is a bit stronger.

The answer is time/place/stature. You are absolutely not alone in preferring Revolver to Sgt. Pepper; that is, in fact, the answer that most rock snobs would give. (Revolver is arguably flawless, though I'd say it competes with the original UK A Hard Day's Night and The Beatles for the crown of "Best Beatles LP.") But not only did Sgt. Pepper drop at exactly the right time -- inaugurating the so-called "Summer of Love" before everything went to shit in '68 in the US and France and Czechoslovakia -- it also was a record that united generations. The dirty hippies loved it, but so did their parents. "She's Leaving Home," "When I'm Sixty-Four," "With A Little Help From My Friends"...these were songs that it's actually not an exaggeration to say that EVERYONE was singing back then, old and young.
THAT is why Sgt. Pepper had the seismic impact. It seemed conceptually unified (even though it really wasn't), it had serious artistic pretenses, and it had a truly universal acceptance among every demographic that would honestly never be repeated again -- ever.

Anyway, Pepper has some duds on it too...She's Leaving Home and Within You Without you are skippable. Abbey Road is a fitting final album for the boys, but...Octopus's Garden..reallly? The vaunted White Album is a mishmash, some great tunes, some unlistenable ones. I'll go with Revolver as the best overall.

Of those three, only No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith really earns its reputation. None of them are BAD, mind you. (though I'll admit that I never felt that most heavy metal bands were capable of 'bringing it' live quite as brain-meltingly as they did in the studio -- ever listen to a Black Sabbath live album? Disappointing as hell!) But one key factor in the "greatest live record" competition, for me at least, has always been the inclusion of material that was either unavailable on other records by the band OR truly redefines/rewrites it.

Best old-school heavy metal album ever: either Led Zeppelin (i.e. the debut) or Black Sabbath (again, the debut).
Best hardcore album ever: Zen Arcade claims this title even though the second LP suddenly branches out into more rockist territory; still, that first LP is the most skin-shreddingly, soul-harrowingly intense American hardcore ever released. And it isn't just because of the MUSIC (hell, the music is badly recorded!), it's because the emotions behind the lyrics are transparently sincere and real, not just an affectation. "Something I Learned Today," "Broken Home, Broken Heart," "Chartered Trips," "The Biggest Lie," and (I've mentioned this one before) "I'll Never Forget You" will make even non-hardcore fans stop and take notice. Oh, and Smashing Pumpkins totally ripped off "What's Going On" for their one truly immortal song, so fuck them.

To be fair it's been a looooong time since I've listened to that one, so I'll have to go back and give it another shot. One of the nice things about having so many albums, and being into so many different artists and styles, is that you build up a backlog -- stuff can just jump out of nowhere after sitting in your collection for years and rearrange your mind. I had R.E.M.'s Murmur in my CD collection for FIVE YEARS before I actually sat down and listened to it the way it deserved...and once I did it was immediately apparent that I was hearing the single greatest debut album by any rock group, full stop. Nearly fifteen years on, I still haven't come up with a debut that's better than that, even though there are many bands I would rate above them overall.

Aw man...that's one of the rare places where my whole "fuck the US bastardized versions" attitude breaks down. Because the US version really does violence to the original concept -- those singles it includes came from up to a year after the original LP was recorded -- but holy living fuck who in their right minds is going to complain about losing "Protex Blue" in favor of "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais" fer chrissakes?
It's really a coin toss. The original UK LP flows more naturally, but "Hammersmith Palais," "Clash City Rockers," "Complete Control," and "Jail Guitar Doors" are songs that only an asshole would complain about being included on the US record.

Don't forget "I fought the Law"... Yeah, the UK version sucks by comparison.. I don't give a shit about how a band wants an LP to flow. I only care about how it sounds to me. Got both versions of "The Clash" and I never play the UK one.
A good example of how moving things around can help an LP, with "Aftermath", the UK version finishes with a pretty weak track IIRC, whereas the US one ends with "Goin' Home". Starts with PIB, ends with Goin' Home. I like that. Another lesser known example is the origianl cassette version of "The White Album". Heard that? The track listing is completely different to the vinyl. It's fantastic.

I'm listening to bootleg soundboard recordings of The Who taken on their October-December 1969 tour of North America. The stuff was recorded professionally for an expected live album, but when Townshend heard the material he for whatever reason declared the recordings to be shite and demanded they be destroyed. Which, supposedly they were...but of course the guy tasked with that responsibility kept a few for himself, which eventually leaked out.
They're incredible, albeit incomplete. The Washington, DC and Ottawa, ON shows in particular are the equal of Live At Leeds.
There really were few live bands as magnetically listenable as The Who from 1968-1971. The Grateful Dead definitely rank up there (really just their 1967-1974 era though), as do King Crimson ca. '72-'74. Joy Division actually are another one who really "brought it," Ace-style, on a nightly basis: no two concerts of theirs are alike, different setlists every night, and each show is hauntingly intense. I have literally every single Joy Division concert ever taped (and openly circulated) and damn near most of them are worth listening to.
Posted by: Jeff B. at September 23, 2013 10:00 PM (n/+FT)
Heh, well I just praised Joy Division's live act in the previous post so obviously I'm a fan. And Unknown Pleasures IS a fantastic album. Hugely influential (though it didn't spring out of nowhere -- Bowie's Low and Iggy Pop's The Idiot are but two obvious precursors) and really great, but you know what? It's not perfect. Murmur is perfect. Unknown Pleasures has stuff like "Day Of The Lords," "Candidate," and "I Remember Nothing" -- you'd be a poseur turd to say these songs are BAD, but they're still noticeable dips in quality.
Meanwhile Murmur starts with track one and (amazingly, breathtakingly, miraculously) simply does not let up for one second until it's finished. It goes from strength to strength, with not a single song about which you would think "eh, I'll skip this one to get to the next." Every time you think it can't improve, it goes from a "Pilgrimage" to a "Laughing" to a "Talk About The Passion." Or from "Perfect Circle" to "Catapult" to "Sitting Still" to "Shaking Through"...you'd be hard-pressed to present a better four-song sequence in last forty years of rock history, and this was their debut album. I mean, holy crap! Their first record! The maturity, right out of the gate!

Research consisted in going to Walmart, Fry's, and Best Buy and jotting down actual TVs on sale and prices, then going to Consumer Reports and seeing what they had to say about them [they've sent me out after phantom products way too many times]. Then going to Amazon to check online prices and user reviews. Ended up with a 47-inch Vizio from Wallyworld.....which had been the first place I went and one of the first ones I'd noticed -- but, y'know, the burn when you feel ripped-off....
I had previously calculated that we'd need a 40-inch 16:9 to match the same image size as we had on the 32-inch 4:3 when showing 4:3 content, and the width of the stand meant that it would start to hang over the sides when the screen got about 48", so I knew it should be 39-50 inches. The 47 looks fine. I've augmented the base with 16 lbs. of dive weights, so it acts like it's glued to the stand (earthquake country).

I'm pretty happy with it -- and got to confirm one of CR's observations firsthand before I whipped out the card and charged it -- if you stand next to the "wall of screens" and look down the row, it's one of the brighter ones, because it has a better than average viewing angle. There were some that were completely dark from my vantage.
I also managed to repair the bluray player that goes to it. The disc drawer was stuck shut but the display was reading "open", so I took it apart, opened the drawer, put it back together, and reapplied the power. All-in-all, very successful doing stuff that should be appreciated by the BH....and I've watched more TV today than I probably have watched, combined, over the last five years, just getting everything set up.

Like many other organizations, they've been sipping the progressive poison when it comes to public policy. They haven't started gulping it, yet, but it has tainted their high-minded objectivity ("we buy the stuff we rate from retailers, and never have ads!" ....but "we should review Air Conditioners with a view toward how much they contribute to global warming").

Eh, there are plenty of peppers that I really enjoy because of thier "hotness" also I do appreciate a spicy kick from other ingredients much of the time.
Bell peppers just don't rate as "spicy" at all, in my book although there is a certain objectionable "grassy" flavor that I found out is genetically linked to about 8% of the population. 9 out of 10 people just don't taste it.
I can get over it if I roast the yellow ones and carmelize them enough to make me overlook the bitter grassy taste, I've found. With enough steak.
Bell peppers are sturdy and colorful and I will rarely use them raw in salads I am preparing for others to eat. But man, once you cook that stuff in a stew or something?... The nasty slimy texture of roasting them with wet stuffing inside?
Blergh!
You could have a casserole the size of a swimming pool and I swear, one cubic inch in the center would be enough to taint the whole dish for my brother and me. "You don't have to eat the peppers, just eat the filling!" caused me to flee the kitchen in inarticulate tears when I was 5.
Though, I hear that some people despise Cilantro, which I lurve, because it "tastes like soap" to them.
Huh.
Posted by: Deety at September 24, 2013 03:22 AM (JOXw+)
Hmmm....I actually lean the other way -- I think the abomination of stuffed peppers is because the stuffing positively oozes horrible grease into a puddle in the pepper. I'd be inclined to try cooking it and roasting the pepper separately and then plating the stuffing into the pepper.
Do you like kabobs with meat, pepper slices, and onions on skewers? They have 'em here that way in grocery stores.

Remember their big thing with, IIRC, Isuzu SUV's and rollovers? I remember reading all that and thinking, "mountains out of molehills" -- but, then, one day I'm toolin' down a freeway here and this SUV next to me starts creeping into my lane like they don't see me. So I give a short toot on the horn, and they twitch back out of my lane.....then across three lanes of traffic and halfway up the concrete barrier, then back across the three lanes of traffic and rolled -- all of which I witnessed, shocked, in my rear-view mirror. I pulled into the median and called 911, then started backing toward the mess, but when I got there one of the other people already on the scene was an actual EMT on his way to work. People in the SUV were shaken, but ok.
Got me to thinking that the rollover tests that they were jumping up and down about might have a big more substance than I'd previously credited them with....

The one I got cost exactly the same on Amazon (free shipping) or in Walmart. Since Amazon does sales taxes now, there was not a dime's difference. Much as I'd have liked to throw the purchase to Ace's Amazon store, the idea of having UPS leave the thing on my doorstep while I was out running errands had little appeal -- so, yeah, bricks and mortar wins one!

Yeah, there was this period where they were the first ones to test for rollover when you swerved, and they netted a lot of fish. Suzukis were just plain horrible -- you could barely steer without rolling. But I'm still thinking that the one that got to be a big fracas was Isuzu. The reason being was that they actually tried to fight it by suing CR for a retraction.....and CR was going "we said that we got it going to X speed, then turned it Y far, and it rolled -- what's to retract?" and the company said, "but you said that was bad!" and CR was going, "what are you, stupid? Of course that's bad." Like I said, I was going, "mountains out of molehills." After I saw an actual rollover like they were talking about, up close and personal, I was on team CR for that scrap.

The 1988 Suzuki thing was bullshit where CR was very probably in the wrong. They were doing rollover tests when nobody else was and decided to draw some blood to publicize them.....by picking on a minor player in the car market. In 1996, CU was tootling their horn in an anniversary issue for having improved safety in '88 by unfairly crucifying Suzuki, and Suzuki sued -- eventually settling with no money changing hands or retracting, but CU agreeing never to mention the Suzuki thing again. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_Reports
However -- the 1997 thing with the Isuzu Trooper was a different car in a different time. AKA the Acura SLX, this little gem also caused a defamation lawsuit....that got summary judgmented in CU's favor. http://tinyurl.com/kjqn5vs

Yeah. I can see that. I got introduced to cilantro in the late 80's from a Columbian lady in the suburbs of Chicago when fresh herbs were pretty unheard of. Back in the day when Parsley meannt that curly woody crap restaurants would seve as a "garnish".
I lurve flat-leaf parlsey to add color and "brightness" to dishes and am amazed that both fresh parsley and cilantro are readily available in most supermarkets nowadays. Too bad they look too much alike, even to the check-out clerks.
Cilantro should be used judiciously I agree but I'm all over combining as much fresh chopped parsley as one thinks is "festive" enough once all other ingredients are tasted and balanced.
Never heard of such a thing as a dish being "over-parsleyed".

A decade later, it's important, and they actually find a vehicle that has that problem....but since they shot their wad 10 years earlier, everyone is figuring that they're up to their same BS again and the manufacturer figures that they'll sue and wrap this up.....until it turns out that, yes, these vehicles actually have the real problem.

How the hell did you do that? Those were both massive shows, and there are very few cities with more than one venue that could handle 'em -- and fewer still that would run them at different times.

Was it a double-bill, or two separate tickets? I'd gathered that it was the tours, rather than the actual recorded shows, but I'm still amazed that they'd both hit the same venue on the same date.

It's not like I don't know tippy -- growing up where I did, half the vehicles on the road were pickups, and they do interesting things on corners depending on what you're hauling. But the rise of the SUV did have the risk that car drivers in seemingly car bodies mounted high off the ground on truck chassis could be a safety issue.

At Disney World's Polynesian resort, there is a restaurant "Ohana" [http://tinyurl.com/kwavvza ] that serves veggies and "stuff roasted on a skewer". From when I first encountered it, I thought it was genius -- 'cause humans went through a "stuff on a skewer" phase in every corner of the globe, somewhere around the paleolithic....and it's always been viable since. It's dressed up as polynesian, but it could be valid in any culture on the planet.

Hi enjoy reading your blog.
Your anti-Nordic picture is of a Saami (Laplander) with his reindeer, not a Nordic, who only kill reindeer to drink their blood. Though the Saami are bastards too.
