New York City: Going Back to the Bad Old Days
Well they're on their way to electing the city's first Sandinista mayor, Bill de Blasio.
Earlier Tuesday, de Blasio defended his support of the Nicaraguan Sandinistas by comparing himself to FDR.
"I'm a progressive and I'm a Democrat and I'm very much in the tradition of Franklin Roosevelt," de Blasio said on WPIX TV, explaining why he traveled to Nicaragua more than two decades ago to support a government the U.S. was trying to topple.
And this was no youthful infatuation - he really really supported the Sandinistas:
He helped raise funds for the Sandinistas in New York and subscribed to the party's newspaper, Barricada, or Barricade. When he was asked at a meeting in 1990 about his goals for society, he said he was an advocate of "democratic socialism.".
...Mr. de Blasio remained supportive of the Sandinistas, often referred to by their acronym, F.S.L.N., even after they lost power. "People who had shallow party sympathies with the F.S.L.N. pretty much dropped everything when they lost," said Jane Guskin, a fellow activist in the solidarity group. "Bill wasn't like that.
And Ed Driscoll points out that NYC may see the return of 'no radio' and 'no cash' signs along with the reasons for them:
And everything Giuliani and Bloomberg have done is reversible. None of their gains is permanent. The barbarians are always at the gate. They are never vanquished, permanently. They may be kept at bay for a while - but they wait to be allowed back in....There was once a common sign in New York. People put it in their cars, when they left them on the street: "No Radio." It was a sign of helplessness and hopelessness. As Commissioner Kelly remarked, it said, Don't break into my car. The one behind me, maybe, or the one in front of me. But not mine, pretty please.
How pathetic. And how utterly accepted it was. I have never seen, personally, a "No Radio" sign. Ever. I moved here in 1998, remember - well into the Giuliani renaissance. Will that sign come back? (I don't know if cars have radios anymore - as they did pre-Giuliani. But they must have something.)
"SHUTDOWN THE GOVERNMENT?! BUT HOW WOULD WE EAT OR BREATHE?! This is a warning to Ted Cruz and all his ilk: If the government stops operating for even one day - chaos and cannibalism will reign in the streets. Mark my words. Yeah, a government shutdown would only impact "non-essential" federal government functions. And, yeah, some might even argue that the government should only be doing the essential things in the first place. But that will be of little solace when you're bleeding on the ground, being eaten alive by the starving masses. I can scarcely imagine the horror. If non-essential government agencies and departments are forced to close for a short period of time, that means we'll have to find a way to go without the Administration on Aging, and the Japan-United States Friendship Commission, and the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. WHERE WILL I GET MY TRANSPORTATION STATISTICS?! You're playing with fire, conservatives. Civilization is bound together by the strong, steady hand of bureaucracy. If you loosen its grasp, you risk plunging us all into a dark, perilous land of individual responsibility and liberty. Our Founders fought and died to rescue us from such a fate, and I'll be damned if I sit here and let you undo their efforts."
Flashbang, Speedbump, and Modern Welfare
One of the revelations that came out after the Boston Marathon bombers were caught is that the entire Tsarnaev clan were living off welfare.
It was widely reported back in April that Flashbang, Speedbump, their parents Anzor and Zubeidat, and various other relatives had all been living entirely on welfare. Their cars came from the state. Their college tuition, room and board, and fees: all free. The press reported that they'd received over $100k in cash benefits alone.
Those stories petered out after Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, who consistently defends even welfare fraud as legitimate "redistribution", insisted that the Tsarnayev's life on the arm was off limits See, they might be criminal monsters who would kill an eight-year-old (as F&S did) and express glee over it (as Zubeidat has). But they have privacy interests, and their privacy interests trump all.
Well guess what - you're still paying for their welfare. So they can hate you.
The welfare payments didn't stop. They didn't stop for Speedbump when the cops shot him and his brother administered an inadvertent coup de grâce with an SUV. His EBT card was still being filled months later - for his wife and children, no doubt. And they didn't stop for Anzor and Zubeidat when they moved back to Russian Central Asia. They simply gave an out-of-state cousin's address, and Massachusetts keeps loading their EBT cards.
On Heckling, Society, and Manliness
The short version:
While attending the "DC's Funniest Celebrity" competition at the DC Improv, journo Josh Rogin was punched two or three times by Dan Nainan, a stand up comedian who had been hired to provide some actual comedy at the event, after Rogin tweeted about how terrible his jokes were. Rogin then tweeted about getting punched in the face and calling the cops. Nainan was arrested.
Jonathon Last comes down on Nainan's side:
On the one hand, if you sit around insulting a guy standing 30 or so feet from you, do you not expect a reaction? Rogin's taunts probably don't rise to"fighting words" but it says something really weird when people are so wedded to virtual space and divorced from meat space that they think spouting off insults about people near them is polite, acceptable behavior that will be universally accepted with bon homie. .Rogin, did not retaliate, but immediately tweeted about the incident. He then pressed charges when the po-po arrived. The next morning, Rogin told the Washington Post, "My face hurts."
Really? This is how men conduct themselves in 21st century America?
But Sonny Bunch disagrees:
I half-agree, half-disagree with JVL. The half-agree first: Yes, American masculinity is in a woeful place when one feels compelled not to respond to aggression with aggression in kind. I'm going to go ahead and blame society here. If Rogin had thrown down he would've opened himself up to lawsuits and, in all likelihood, action by the police. He probably would've been arrested along with Nainan. He also would've been treated with scorn by his colleagues in attendance, most of whom would rather get punched in the face than throw one of their own. I can't say I blame Rogin for bemusedly tweeting about the incident rather than putting his fist through Nainan's face, no matter how much Nainan deserved it.
...There are different rules for meatspace and cyberspace. Different norms govern both. It's okay to (verbally**) destroy a heckler from the stage. And it would be okay to (electronically) destroy a heckler on Twitter. But violence is an inappropriate response to someone who's making fun of you on social media. If you can't handle the horde poking fun at you, don't open a Twitter account.
Me - I much prefer a world where physical violence is rare. Which means you better be able to brutalize a critical asshole verbally and on social media when you need to.
How to Make an Easy $200,000 Off the Upcoming Postal Increase
Well first you gotta buy $4.6 million dollars of Forever stamps before the price increase.
Our plan is to buy 10 million stamps at $0.46 each and sell them at $0.48. The margins, of course, are small. If we buy 10 million stamps, spending $4.6 million, we'll earn $200,000-a 4.3% profit.
The good news is that you can buy up to 1 million stamps in a single order from the USPS, and pay a mere $1.75 in shipping (shipping is their business, after all).
They then run the numbers on the nitty gritty details and it still looks like pretty good investment.
At least here we aren't being forced to finance ABC, NBC, and CBS via a TV fee:
Ten per cent of English court cases now involve the prosecution of citizens who decline to pay for the BBC. That's some 700 cases per day. We'd probably see a similar number in Australia if funding for our state broadcaster wasn't drawn directly and immorally from our taxes.

Recreating the Hemingway Burger
Fingers deep, I kneaded. Fighting the urge to be careless and quick, I kept the pace rhythmic, slow. Each squeeze, I hoped, would gently ease the flavors-knobby bits of garlic, finely chopped capers, smatterings of dry spices-into the marbled mound before me.I had made burgers before, countless times on countless evenings. This one was different; I wasn't making just any burger-I was attempting to recreate Hemingway's hamburger. And it had to be just right.
...It started off simply enough: ground beef, India relish, capers, and green onions, mixed with various spices, egg, and wine. (The recipe is very specific about the brand of spices; Spice Islands appeared to be the Hemingway spice brand of choice.)
Mei Yen powder, however, tripped me up. Perhaps it was a popular spice in the 1950s but in 2013, it was nowhere to be found; it turns out it was discontinued three years ago. But after some conferring with the good people at Spice Islands, I had a recipe for recreating that.
And so I began. First, I broke up the meat, scattering the garlic, onion and dry seasonings over it. After letting that rest for a smidgen, I added the relish, capers, wine, and all else and let that "sit, quietly marinating." The smell of spices, garlic, capers, meat, and wine slowly perfumed the air of my tiny kitchen.
Hemingway liked his burgers pan-fried, not grilled. So, out came the pan. The heady scent of charred beef tinged with sage, garlic, and celery seed rapidly became unbearable. I could not wait to eat. By the time the burger was "crispy brown and the middle pink and juicy" my pangs were palpable.

Needless to say, he's a Communist.
But nevertheless, it's true that he is "very much in the tradition of Franklin Roosevelt". Given the absolutely extraordinary number of high level FDR aides who were revealed after the end of the Cold War to have been covert Soviet agents of influence.

Well actually it's the world *I* live in. I haven't been in a fight since middle school and haven't even seen a real life scuffle in a few years. For the most part I never have to think about hitting someone else or getting hit in my daily life. And I like it that way.
If violence is regular part of your life, you might want to re-think some of your life choices.

In massively liberal San Francisco today, if you leave ANYTHING visible inside your car, it is likely to be gone when you come back. The locals will break windows using spark plugs on strings, slice convertible tops with knives, rip out door handles with pry bars. They're fast. I've seen cases of break-ins under two minutes after the car is parked and left.
It doesn't have to be high-dollar lure merchandise like laptops or phones or jewelry. Stupid shit like gloves and scarves are entirely sufficient. But even lesser stuff is a risk.
A friend of mine left a half-eaten burger on the passenger seat while he dashed in to get his dry cleaning. Someone popped the side window. For a half-eaten burger.
(By the way, my fingers slipped and I originally composed that sentence as "a half-eaten bugger", which has to be one of the most awesome inadvertent typos in history, especially in a San Francisco context.)

Note that one or both of the catastrophic and lethal Shuttle losses would have been averted if the original flyback booster idea had been used.
Challenger? Solid rocket booster joint burnthrough. No SRBs in the original.
Columbia? Damage to Orbiter from external tank insulation breaking off. Some versions of the original design sensibly put the Orbiter above the flyback booster, which would have done away with that risk as well.
I spent a couple of decades cursing the failure of NASA to go with the flyback design, but I ultimately and reluctantly conceded that no matter what, the Shuttle was going to have been a giant turkey, an enormously expensive technological dead end.
As Jim Baen once said, "The space program reminds me of a government agency."
The lesson of Shuttle is: when attempting something that's never been done before, don't commit the whole program to it right out of the gate. Build one-off operating prototypes and spend a couple of years flying them at a low rate. Learn what the unknown unknowns are. Then maybe build an advanced version.
Meanwhile, the nation careens down the same stupid path with the F-35 fighter as it did with Shuttle. Early, massive, and total commitment to an extremely expensive program, without operational prototypes, that does not do what it says on the tin. Total genius.

The House should pass Continuing Resolutions to fund individual items from Article I, section 8 of the Constitution -- e.g. "We explicitly fund the Department of the Mint and NIST" [from the fifth clause enumerating powers]. Then, make it clear that once the enumerated powers are funded, that's the last of the CRs. No emanations or penumbras allowed. Department of Labor, Department of Education, Department of Energy, EPA, Obamacare, TPAB -- all that can get funded when Hell freezes over.
Then triple-dog-dare the Senate to muck with any of 'em.

Out West, they're stealing car mirrors, which are apparently cake to take off and a $1000 part on some models.
And then there's still the old favorites of swiping catalytic converters and siphoning gas.

Now it feels like Disneyland with the SS doing security.

The threat of physical force is what is used to keep law and order. It is civilization. If you take that threat away, then the really bad people WILL commit much worse violence.
If you can't recognize that, perhaps you should rethink your life choices.
Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at September 29, 2013 10:21 PM (GEICT)
I think you missed the point of the article and my comment - I'm not talking about police and implied government-sanctioned violence here. I talking about getting punched by Joe Blow in line with you at Target or a 7-11 parking lot. Or some guy taking offense to one of your tweets and cold-cocking you.
I never see this kind of stuff. Primarily due to life choices I've made (along with a little luck and some non-victim body language).
Guys regularly throwing down over minor insults is not civilization - it's what a lot of civilization's infrastructure is designed to prevent.

The second was Fleet Week / International Naval Review 2000. It wasn't the same city. You could walk the streets of lower Manhattan without fear, and go to the Bronx for a game and not think too much about it. No car carcasses on 95. That was how much of a difference Guliani and his crew made.
It's like they expect this to go on forever and their policies are only going to make things even better. Or more "fair".

Capable of fighting back != violence. Being prepared to defend yourself != violence. I'm talking about actual physical altercations here - not something implied.
That threat of getting punched in the face is what keeps a helluva lot of people from telling Joe Blow to fuck off when they bump into each other or have a minor altercation.
The threat of violence prevents greater violence and contributes to general social order. It's a violent world, always has been, always will be.
Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at September 29, 2013 10:37 PM (GEICT)

If walking around while carrying a concealed weapon or merely knowing karate is 'violence', then the term has little meaning. Knowing judo or getting mugged and beaten are both the same: violence.

The rest of us should be ready to help!
Democrats constantly excoriate the GOP for "blocking needed revenue". Where "revenue", of course, means "taxes".
The House GOP needs to, as part of debt ceiling negotiations, be ready to answer that criticism. By putting on the table a fat package of tax hikes. Very regrettably and sorrowfully agreed to tax hikes, you understand. Only at the insistence of the Democrats on new "revenue" were these measures put forth.
Tax hikes to include reaming the fuck out of Google and Facebook over their tens of billions in overseas tax-sheltered revenue. Tax hikes to include tearing Hollyweird's spine out of its body with a fat new excise tax on entertainment. Tax hikes to include taking away the home mortgage interest tax deduction, which overwhelmingly benefits two states, New York and California.
And, tax hikes to include repealing the grossly unfair way in which zillionaire hedge fund managers in New York get to treat all of their income as "capital gains" for federal income tax purposes.
Expect the entire New York congressional delegation to shit themselves in abject fear over that last part. Upchuck Schumer hardest hit.
Seriously, the House GOP needs to send this sort of stuff over and dare the Democrats to veto or otherwise reject it. And if the Democrats do reject it, which they will, that's just fodder for the next cycle's campaign ads.
"They want new taxes. They just don't want to pay those new taxes themselves."

Yep. That's the same basic argument behind why the Sears Corporation (at the time America's largest retailer) built their eponymous tower in Shitcargo, Illinois. Because it was the place to be if you were somebody, and Sears was certainly the somebody of somebodies.
Meanwhile, some pathetic nobodies that no one who mattered had ever heard of, who thought they might one day be big in retail (hah!) were setting up shop in The Skinny Ass End Of Nowheresville, a.k.a. Bentonville, Arkansas.
Those folks at Sears certainly showed the unknown upstarts who was boss.

I was in Connecticut a few years ago, and driving by a big complex that was built by Bear Stearns ( in ~ 2006) that was going to be their "state of the art" bond trading house. Of course, it's just empty and idle now.
I think a lot of the big traders and their paychecks will initially go somewhere close, like Connecticut, but sooner or later they will cluster in another big city with favorable tax rates.

I believe they've made some insinuations that the Klingons technology might have been acquired through an invasion, and them eventually driving off their enemies but having the technology. If you notice their technology doesn't really seem to advance very much through the Trek series with possibly the exception of acquiring cloaking technology through their alliance with the Romulans. The Sword of Khaless being in the Gamma Quadrant lends to the invasion speculation.

Well, the Klingons in TOS didn't seem hyperviolent. Aggressive, certainly, but not the space barbarians that they tried to make later. I like to think that Worf's comment on the differences in that time travel episode of DS9 indicate that the Klingons suffered some catastrophe that transformed their species.

Hinds Country prosecutor put in jail one mayor because he was going around actually taking a sledgehammer to drug houses. The streets are worse in Hinds than Rankin though the car tag tax in Hinds is about 3x that of Rankin. The FBI convicted several members of the Jackson city council over a kickback scheme over who got the cable TV franchise. Jackson is and will remain a decaying hive of scum and free loaders. Nothing will change until it does become Detroit. Why? Because the ones who wanted to flee and could afford it, already have.

I mean, the Klingons probably look at Vulcans and wonder "how come they even fight? aren't they all engineers?" As for humans, Duras actually says to Picard's face that humans are just diplomats who can't fight.
So our assumption that Klingons are all space-barbarians is just anti-Klingon racism :^)

He's not the only person to have been rudely handled by hospital-acquired infections. Jim Hoft over at the Gateway Pundit went in for a "routine" joint replacement, one of those out before you know it kind of things. Except his was anything but routine. It turned into weeks in the ICU with infected, damaged heart valves from an antibiotic-resistant bug that went systemic after getting in at the operative site.
I won't let a family member go in for surgery before I meticulously research the hospital's safety ranking and infection control protocols. Some of these places are little more than high-rise sewers. No kidding.

Many data centers have been located near hydro plants because they have cheap electricity. That factor overwhelmed other factors, like locating them near where the best data center talent lives.
Clustering is just one factor among many that effects where workers and firms choose to locate. But it's a powerful factor that is easily seen in the economic data and research.
Posted by: Flatbush Joe at September 29, 2013 11:40 PM (ZPrif)
Clustering is all about an odd dynamic about innovation -- most innovations fail; but most of your innovations come from a small group of innovators. This means that it's highly likely that one of those innovators will end up torpedo-ing a company....and the company will experience immense pressure to purge him in order to (a) validate the management of the innovator that bet the farm on a loser, and (b) show that they have repented for committing so much time and resources to what, in retrospect, was a Really Dumb Idea.
The problem is, the guy that spun out that Really Dumb Idea that management over-committed to? At least he's spinning out ideas. So companies are going to want to be around innovators to scoop up the ones cast off.....and innovators are going to want to be around alternative companies so if their Really Dumb Idea explodes, they can still find employment. So you have a "cluster" -- which we all know is just 2/3 of a word.

Chapter 9 The Bad Guys
The Romulans - ... Romulans are highly militaristic, aggressive by nature, ruthless in warfare, and do not take captives. The Star Empire is a dictatorship, with some similarities to the warrior-stoic philosophies of Earth's ancient Roman Empire. ... There is complete equality between the sexes; women are often as found in command of a ship as are men.
The Klingons - ... Their only rule of life is rules are made to be broken by shrewdness, deceit, or power. Cruelty is something admirable; honor is a despicable trait. ... Rule is by absolute dictatorship and assassination is common. Their society is totally devoted to personal gain by the cleverest, strongest, or most treacherous. As a result, their vessels often operate much like "privateers," and warlike acts are a way of life. ... They have no patience with women, even their own, and treat them as sometime useful animals. ... All in all, the Klingons appear to have little (by our standards) in the way of redeeming qualities.

By 1983 a thriving cluster had developed around that IBM site as the PC went ballistic in the market.
I'd argue that cluster can actually stifle the real renegades by recycling people with preconceived notions of how shit's supposed to be done.
If the IBM team had adopted the closed architecture Apple, Osborne, Kaypro type approach, the PC would have flopped.
Having the BIOS "rom scan" documented, and publishing the BIOS source code, motherboard schematic and full hardware details in the PC's blue spine "Technical Reference" manual was a brilliant move that removed all mystery. Anyone could write code or make adapter cards for those machines and know how to make it work.

I think we're both pretty much on the same page -- clusters are effects and not causes. Once things start bubbling -- based on a non-fail innovation -- a cluster environment can arise if companies believe that innovators are more important than innovations.
If, contrariwise, you're in a "if you build it, they will come" mode, then you believe that you must encourage a cluster to form in order to drive your economic development....which is something I found when tooling around NC and TN -- all sorts of unlikely places had designated "research parks" to try to capture the lightning of NC's Research Triangle.

Unfortunately for administrators at LA Unified School District, Step 2 has involved at least 71 kids losing the iPads they were given by the city of Los Angeles as part of a pilot program aimed at eventually supplying all district kids with the snazzy, shiny devices.
Another 300 students figured out how to rig the security settings on their iPads to visit unauthorized social media websites. This prompted administrators to ban students from using the iPads while they are at home, away from school supervision — at least partly defeating the point of having the devices, which are intended as supplemental learning tools.

RPI has been pimping a "research park" spinoff between Troy and East Greenbush off rt4 for over 20 years now. AFAIK, nothing earth shattering has ever come out of it, although the university proper has done some solid break through work over the years. Certainly nothing of the magnitude of the industry the original IBM PC spawned has come out of that industrial park
The triangle area already had strong industrial presence before the RTP notion ever came along. Most IBM networking development had been done at the Raleigh site for a very long time.

NC Research Triangle is successful because it is located in Raleigh (state capitol) and right smack dab in the center of Duke-UNC-NCSU. Not very many cities have that kind of firepower going for it. Boston is the only other area like Raleigh that I can think of with that much juju.

Posted by: Purp at September 30, 2013 12:35 AM (9MLX+)
I was toolin' around and kept finding offramps to "East Bumfuck Research Park" -- which I found extremely sad. There's some extremely pretty countryside and wonderful people around, but there are some places (mainly mill towns) that have just imploded. Now, I'm looking at them and thinking "why not just reboot?", but something sucked the soul out of 'em -- and a lot of that was embodied in the concept of a research park. It was like, "the XXX (cotton mill, cigarette plant, furniture factory....) went foom, we'll make a research park and everything will be right again." Very cargo cult.
Which, again, is sad. There are so many advantages to be had in the area, but when TPTB are fixated on a specific deus ex machina, things just sit.

Then there are the questions of why it happens and how to influence it. A lot of govts spend a lot of money to try and jumpstart a cluster. Usually fails. But sometimes succeeds like with Research Triangle Park in NC which, as others have pointed out, had a lot to do with having UNC-Duke-NC State spitting out fresh young talent every year.
Big govt and big business can pour a ton of money into a site and jumpstart a cluster to a degree. And IBM back in its prime was about as big business as it gets. And modern universities are about as big govt as you can get.
Posted by: Flatbush Joe at September 30, 2013 12:50 AM (ZPrif)
I would posit that government and business have little or nothing to do with clustering through intention and effort.

Posted by: ricky at September 29, 2013 09:08 PM (9gNQd)
It happens because someone succeeded in a non-clustered backwater that was (originally) CHEAP to operate out of. Its an effect, not a cause.
You can generate cluster from scratch with a monopoly operation backstopping them -- ex. the industrial cluster that surrounded the US Army's Watervliet arsenal. However, when that backstop vanishes, so does most of the cluster because they'd so tuned their operations to that monopoly's needs.
When the Watervliet arsenal scaled back operations, a lot of surrounding business folded -- they didn't know how to stand on their own with a diverse range of product/services.
The Boca area took a hit for several years when IBM folded the site, but has bounced back and is even stronger now than when IBM was in town. Even though IBM left, many still had markets elsewhere and weren't dependent on IBM.

Onion smell is produced by sulfur compounds in the juices. A quick scan of the internet indicates that acidic remedies (lemon juice, vinegar) have potential to knock that down. Alternatively, you can try synthesizing meth, which should soon render your onion problem trivial.
Posted by: cthulhu at September 29, 2013 09:10 PM (T1005)
Try cutting a fresh lemon in half and rubbing it on your hands. The only other stuff I know that will get rid of the smell of onion juice is Clorox, and that's tough on skin as well as on nasty smells.

His family got a protective order. He made bail. When a judge later raised the amount, so did Chavez.
In the weeks since the Sept. 7 slaying that left three San Jose children virtually orphaned, some of the sadness gave way to a pointed question: Should Chavez -- who was in the country illegally -- have been able to post bail in the first place?
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials contend they could have kept Chavez off the street, but were stymied by a county policy that severely curtails their access to inmates. But the local leaders who championed that policy say it remains an important protection against federal overreaching, and argue the criminal justice system has plenty of other ways to keep dangerous individuals locked up.
... of course ICE could have done more ... I blame Obama.

Kind of. Serenity's explanation for the Reavers was ok, but I kind of like the idea that the Reavers were once men and women like the crew of the Serenity, and over time they changed due to long time spent in space and the things that they had to do to survive. It would have added some complexity to the series, as the question becomes, "will the crew's morally questionable actions lead it down the same path?"

We have a 1900' suburban house on a 8192' suburban lot in the middle of Silicon Valley. Unfortunately, we have an odd relationship with plants. As an example, we have spider plants in green, green with a white stripe in the middle, and white with a green stripe in the middle. We have asparagus ferns in five varieties and at least 8 types of mint.
In order to do this, the majority of our plants are in pots, including quite large ones. This includes bamboo and trees. By way of contrast, most of our edibles are in raised boxes in the side yard, where we mainly have tomatoes and peppers this year.

My tomato yield was down this year, very dry in N. IL. A tip I learned recently, just discovered a bit a go, the color red helps them grow faster and mature better. You don't have to but commercial products, tho I like Gardener's Supply. Just cut up a red Folger's can and shield the plant early in the spring when it needs protection from the cold. ex. Dexter having Deb killed off? Seriously, WTF were they thinking doing that?
I'd have kept her alive and had her get accepted at Quantico or something...then you could have her feeding a now mobile Dexter a steady supply of previously unsolvable FBI serial killer cases to "resolve" and you could changeup a reboot into roadtrip format all over the country

Reached the that final straw.
Sprayed Roundup over the whole thing.
Now a nice even brown and:
NO. MORE. MOWING.

I' m not sure where you are at, but IMO just plant native plants. This idea of a green bluegrass lawn is really ridiculous. Forced on us by the white hertonormative partriarchy!!! Did I speel that right? J/K
Seriously, just investigate laying down some ground barriers for most of the yard, mulch it and plant native plants in strategic spots. Done w/ most of the maintenance for many years.

------True dat. It works best if you have a bad problem to add salt to the water. Cheaper than Roundup. Just don't expect anything to grow there for a long time.

I could never get comfortable with the idea of carrying around lots of boiling water. I guess you just get a huge teapot and be really careful.

does the salt tend to migrate, or can you keep it pretty localized?
do you have to worry about killing nearby trees because the roots are in the general area?

I rewatched Encino Man, essentially if I can figure out Pauly Shore I think I can solve America's decline.
