Extremely Extreme Extremists and Why Government Budgeting is So Fucked Up
So why are we lurching from continuing resolution to continuing resolution with the occasional temporary government shutdown in between?
Well Stacy McCain explains that it's pretty much all the fault of Harry Reid and President Obama and their decision to abdicate one of their primary constitutional duties for short-term political gain:
The answer is that the budgeting process has completely broken down in recent years, and the two men most responsible for that breakdown are President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. For three consecutive years - 2010, 2011, and 2012 - the Democrat-controlled Senate did not pass a budget bill because Reid knew that it would be a political liability to do so. Passing a budget that detailed the Democrats' plans for spending and revenue as official policy would have exposed the "something for nothing" swindle that Reid and his colleagues are perpetrating on the American people. Republican challengers campaigning against Democrat senators could have cited their votes for the budget bill, saying that the incumbent voted for this, that, or the other unpopular component of the measure.Reid and the Democrats knew this. They knew very well that the federal deficit was spiraling out of control, that there was not enough tax revenue to pay the mushrooming cost of entitlement programs (Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, unemployment, et cetera), and certainly there wasn't enough revenue to pay for all the boondoggles and giveaways the Democrats voted for in the name of "stimulus." Adding to this, there was not enough revenue to pay the cost of Obamacare, which Democrats rammed through Congress in March 2010 on a party-line vote. Passing an actual budget would have made clear the unsustainable fiscal nightmare into which Democrat policies have plunged the nation during the Obama Age, and so Harry Reid simply didn't pass a budget for three years.
Inevitably, there will be serious fiscal and economic consequences for what has been done in Washington since 2009. Democrats, however, cared less about such real-world matters than they did about the short-term political gain to be had by promoting the pleasant fiction that liberal "generosity" with taxpayer money (including trillions of dollars in deficit spending) had no real cost.
To actually pass a budget would be to admit and own what they've done. So they finance the beast through crisis instead.
And count on Ezra Klein to boil the budgeting crisis down to a single sentence of stupidity and utter un-self-awareness:
The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics - it is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.
Yet somehow as a political 'outlier' the GOP still manages to control the House, hold a 46% minority in the Senate, and got 47% of the national vote in the 2012 presidential election. So yeah they're like totally freaky-deaky crazy-time political outliers.
Bill Clinton: Still the Shameless Lying Bill Clinton We All Knew
From a quote by director Charles Ferguson explaining why the Hillary movie will never be made - because nobody wants it made and nobody wants to see it.
In June, I attended a dinner for Bill Clinton, which was educational. Clinton spoke passionately about his foundation, about African wildlife, inequality, childhood obesity, and much else with enormous factual command, emotion, and rhetorical power. But he and I also spoke privately. I asked him about the financial crisis. He paused and then became even more soulful, thoughtful, passionate, and articulate. And then he proceeded to tell me the most amazing lies I've heard in quite a while. For example, Mr. Clinton sorrowfully lamented his inability to stop the Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which banned all regulation of private (OTC) derivatives trading, and thereby greatly worsened the crisis. Mr. Clinton said that he and Larry Summers had argued with Alan Greenspan, but couldn't budge him, and then Congress passed the law by a veto-proof supermajority, tying his hands. Well, actually, the reason that the law passed by that overwhelming margin was because of the Clinton Administration's strong advocacy, including Congressional testimony by Larry Summers and harsh public and private attacks on advocates of regulation by Summers and Robert Rubin.
Wow, I thought, this guy is a really good actor.
Yeah that's what we call it - 'acting'.
UK NHS Bans Minor Operations on Smokers Unless They Promise to Quit
This is how government-provided health care 'nudges' your behavior - by withholding medical procedures if they disapprove of how you live.
Patients are being denied minor treatments because they smoke, The Mail on Sunday has found. In one case a healthy middle-aged man was told he could not have a ten-minute operation to cut a small benign growth off the side of his head, because of his habit.
Paul Merrett thought it would be no problem to get the inch-long fatty lump, called a lipoma, removed.
...But when he attended King George Surgery in Stevenage, his GP said he could not have the minor operation - which doctors often do under local anaesthetic in their own consulting rooms.
Mr Merrett, 46, said: 'I was told, in no uncertain terms, that unless I gave up smoking or signed up to a quitting clinic they would refuse to treat me. I was gobsmacked.'
He claims the doctor told him: 'These directions are not mine. It's not me refusing this treatment, it's the NHS trust.'
According to linguist Richard Lewis.
The behavior of people of different cultures is not something willy-nilly. There exist clear trends, sequences and traditions. Reactions of Americans, Europeans, and Asians alike can be forecasted, usually justified and in the majority of cases managed. Even in countries where political and economic change is currently rapid or sweeping (Russia, China, Hungary, Poland, Korea, Malaysia, etc.) deeply rooted attitudes and beliefs will resist a sudden transformation of values when pressured by reformists, governments or multinational conglomerates.

I pretty much gave up on tylenol in college after I learned the LD50 dose was only a few times that of a therapeutic dose.
One of the key problems with Tylenol is that it doesn't take all that many extra pills to start experiencing harmful side effects. For instance, the maximum recommended daily dose is eight extra-strength tablets. Just two additional tablets a day, taken over a long period, can cause liver damage.

Actually my mom is the complete other side of the spectrum - she *loves* technology and has to have the latest cool gadgets and toys.
But she never reads the manuals and just starts fiddling with controls and mucking around on the system. And that's why her PCs never run right, the bridged wifi networks are dog-ass slow, the webcams are unreliable, and the Roomba vaccum-bots are always eating the rugs and tumbling down the stairs. And could I please fix it all remotely by phone. :-(

Pass a C.R. with only one other provision: Obamacare applies fully to Congress.
That is a messaging war that can be easily won! After all, if Obamacare is so great, then why are the Democrats willing to shut down the government to avoid having to be under it?

There are two possible explanations why the House Repubs don't become proactive on Ocare with three sure winners:
1. Delay individual mandate just like it has been waived for so many other favored groups;
2. Deny any and all special medical waivers and funding for members of Congress and senior government officials, specifically including the Supreme Court; and
3. Remove the medical device tax from the legislation.
If they stood firm on these three (or almost any subset) , they would have a clear, understandable, coherent position that resonated with even LiVs.
If they (Boehner) don't offer these alternatives and stand fast on them, the House Repubs are either incompetent or statist faux democrats and should not be allowed to represent us.

I was thinking too, not one freaking gay character forced on us. Not one muzzie to feel good about. No abortions. Characters often written against type.. oh, I forgot.. they did have the Chicken guy as a ghey, but quietly and was black ... against type and very violent. Heh.

Had an employee in the UK on business, she slipped on the glass-smooth shower and fell out. She's still in pain at the assignment, so they send her off to the NHS.....where they gave her some jumbo-dose Tylenol crap with even less of a safety margin than the regular stuff (which, BTW, I will not have in my house or take knowingly -- at all).

Their total sell out to only one side of the political equation, and even that dishonestly, has rendered the nation into a blind, deaf and ignorant stumble bum groping it's way around on the top of a cliff.
No matter what happens in the next few years those who care must somehow correct this and make those who caused it to happen pay.

Tylenol
Broke my elbow in my 20's. Finally had surgery two years later. After the prescription painkillers ran out, went to see the doctor something. For the pain, the doctor said, "Go ahead, you can take 2 times the recommended dose of Tylenol AND Advil for the pain. Take Both. It will not hurt you." I was in my twenties, and drank like a fish to help with the pain.
I am lucky to be alive.

Due to his inexplicable 180 on the subject and given Obama's Chicago style of "winning" by intimidation, I've always assumed that Mr. Roberts has some deep dark secret that he's willing to subvert his position on the court and his place in history to keep from being revealed.
My first guess is that he's gay.
My second guess is that he likes boys (or girls) of a very young age.

I think the problem is she is too honest and too stupid to know how to become a millionaire like every crooked Congress critter seems too.
It's not the congresscritters, it's their aides. Having to find a job that actually pays well would severely curtail the number of cute 22 y.o. blondes that can work for peanuts on some Senator's staff.

I think that when you file your taxes you will be required to file a certificate of health insurance from your provider. If you don't, you will be assessed a fine of 95 dollars or about 2 per cent of you income, whichever is higher. the tax will be withheld from your refund, assuming you get one
so, they collect at tax time

The same way when you don't give the government it's tribute.
You will be assessed a penalty, er, tax.
Posted by: Kreplach at September 30, 2013 07:49 PM (hmUex)
From what I understand (but who the ckuf knows how it will really work) that the IRS won't dun anyone for the "tax" but if you are supposed to get a refund and you owe the "tax" then they will take it out of your refund.
What happens if you owe them but don't pay the "tax" I don't have a clue if they will then claim you didn't pay in full and try to collect.
I hope everyone gets so confused and pissed off that the number of non payers jumps up and the IRS gets overloaded.
serve em right.

I just sent a message to Obama thru the whitehouse.gov site:
"Dear President Obama,
I am currently unemployed. I'm a diabetic and asthmatic. I do not have health insurance. I will not comply with Obamacare. I will not sign up through any exchanges, nor will I pay any fines. Excuse me, taxes. I won't answer any questions my doctor asks that I don't consider as germain to my conditions. In short, I will not comply, period. Your healthcare plan doesn't have anything to do with health or with care. I've never been in the military, nor sworn an oath other than the pledge of allegiance, but I consider it my duty to disobey unconstitutional laws. Make no mistake, Obamacare is unconstitutional on it's face, and my duty as a citizen compels me to not comply regardless of my health conditions or possible repercussions.
Sincerely, Big Zesty" I used my real name, address, & phone number. Good evening morons.

Murder is still illegal -- because it's a STATE crime. Fraud is still illegal -- because prosecution for fraud is handled by STATES. Except for Defense, very little of what the Feds do is beneficial -- and what is beneficial is probably unconstitutional (e.g. "National Parks" -- find that in here somewhere, if you can: http://www.usconstitution.net/xconst_A1Sec8.html).

And mandatory Tardasil injections! Shock horror! Eleventy!!!
Why does Bachmann care anyway? She's leaving Congress.
Oh, wait, that's right. She's leaving Congress, but she and her family are not leaving the FEHBP health care plan which covers Congress. They'll be on that for decades yet to come.
What? What's that you say? When _you_ have a job, and it has health care benefits, and you leave that job, you get to keep your benefits only for a short while via COBRA and you pay handsomely for the privilege? You don't get to tote that health coverage around with you endlessly afterwards?
Silly you! You should have run for office!
As Ace notes, we ordinary working stiffs have "jobs", with benefits that largely end when the job does. Whereas the Beltway cadre -- left, right, and everything in between -- have "careers", with things like perpetual post-employment benefits at your expense.

As I was reaching down to pick it up with my doggie bag, my neighbor, a non-essential government worker, yelled at me from across the street. I about jumped out of my skin!
When he asked to pick it up for me, my heart settled down. Nobody ever did that for me! Then he said his family had to eat something, and my heart just sank.
Stop the madness, GOP. This is just too much to bear.

We couldn't risk a government shutdown over defunding (the poor man's repeal) of Obamacare-only crazybirds want that.
We now have a shutdown over a one year delay that Boehner is certain to cave on and doesn't matter anyway (because do we really believe the GOP, having made this bait and switch, would hold the line on not borrowing whatever funds are necessary to paper over the resulting shortfall) and a meaningless requirement that DC staffers be sent to the exchanges, which will be made up to them through pay increases (and more borrowing).
Did I miss anything?

Here's your regular reminder:
Being on Farcebook accomplishes absolutely nothing positive, while it does many incredibly negative things.
It puts money into the pockets of a Farcebook executive cadre who turn around and donate stacks of that money to the worst liberal political nonsense you can imagine. Plus their enormous in-kind contributions in terms of allowing Obama/DNC operatives to data-mine Farcebook for all it's worth.
Whenever I point out stuff like this, I get snippy comments like, "Oh, that's _just_ what conservatives need, to have no presence on social media."
My reply? Go back through Ace's comment threads and count up the number of posts in which people say, "I had an argument with a liberal friend/acquaintance/family-member on Farcebook, and I was winning hands down, and then they suddenly unfriended me."
That's it in a nutshell. You can influence those who are willing to listen, and liberals on Farcebook aren't willing to do so. Not at all. Meanwhile, your presence there on FB helps Obama, Soros, and a huge gang of other liberal shitheads prosper.
Rethink. Decline. Opt out. Cancel.

To be fair, there are many tiny villages on the BC coast that probably have either no clinic at all, or else a traveling doctor that visits once a week. But if canoe boy had had something seriously life-threatening, chances are that whatever authority was present could have arranged a medevac flight to get him to a major center.
And for a non-citizen, aka non-insured patient, well, yes, they would have to pay cash, same as I do if I travel in the USA. (and they don't withhold treatment, anymore than hospitals do in the USA, but a bill would be presented)
There are many valid criticisms to be made of the Canadian single-payer health system, but canoe-boy's problems aren't one of them.

Doing nothing on the debt limit is the second best thing they could do. The best thing they could do would be to take the current debt ceiling, divide it by 20, and lower the debt limit by that much each year until it was paid off. That way, an infant born today would turn 21 without someone else having a claim on his future.
"On Jan. 20, 2009, when Obama was first inaugurated, the total debt of the federal government was $10,626,877,048,913.08, according to the U.S. Treasury." -- and the US population was about 305,687,000. That meant that every citizen owed about $34,764 -- which would be what they could expect to pay over their lifetimes in taxes beyond which they would receive in government services and benefits.
The current US debt clock is currently showing the national debt as $16,958,657,025,307, with a per capita amount of $53,533. So, what has been going on for the last 4-3/4 years is that Obama has been handing out party favors to every Lib wet-dream, and has paid for them with credit cards in the name of the citizens of the United States, and instructed VISA and Mastercard to start sending the maxed-out cards' statements to every citizen showing a balance of $18,769. That much of the taxes you pay will never benefit you because it has already benefited them. They can't give you more government stuff, they can't lower your taxes, they can't hold it in reserve....because each and every dollar has already been pissed away.

Heh. Supposedly. But that is breaking down. Saw a billboard today on a major thoroughfare in Calgary: "Time Matters. When you can't afford to wait. We have private CT and MRI scans. Mayfair Medical Imaging."
I think what we will have here in future is a mixed system: single-payer taxpayer funded health care available to everybody, with all its drawbacks, and for those willing to pay, or to buy extra insurance, private clinics and hospitals. Many countries have such a system already.

I'll run 'lectric all day and all night, I'll do two-way and three-way lighting switches, I'll do GFI's and can lights and low voltage and 220....but I won't work on the utility side of the main breaker. Frankly, I don't even like working in the main panel -- and will probably do subpanels for any construction I do in the future (did a subpanel for my 2004 kitchen remodel, and love being able to isolate problems without going outside). The way it's presented today, yep. How 'bout, "if we run a deficit this year, you will never get your money's worth in government services for the rest of your life"? Of course, you're not going to get your money's worth for $53,533 of your taxes, plus interest, now.....
I would absolutely go for a requirement that members of congress would have to personally fund their family's portion of the national debt every time they raised it. They could do it in the form of a bond, and lower the amount whenever the national debt decreased.

That's one of our biggest problems. The PTB spend money as though there is a never ending supply.
(You normally hear 'Like a drunken sailor' but as a resident expert, I can assure you that even drunken sailors realize when the money has run out.)
This same spending pattern has now become the norm throughout the nation. This is what led to the housing bubble, and is going to come to a head concerning college loan debts. Yet - we just find another thing to finance because nobody knows how to save

"Living in California through the 1973 Prop 13 travails, I am very familiar with the "shut the Washington Monument" techniques of the institutionalized pro-government party, and I'd like to make a small suggestion. When CNN goes to the Washington Monument and starts whinging about how the shutdown will hurt tourism.....privatize it. Tell 'em it'd be open tomorrow if you leased it for 25 years to a concessionaire, have a candidate to run the concession and a contract ready, and introduce a bill in the House to award the contract while CNN's cameras are still running.
And, BTW, do that to every single thing the government tries to shut down, including White House tours."

Ibuprofen is -- in comparison with acetaminophen -- safe as houses. When it became available OTC in 1984, they should have pulled the plug on Tylenol.

I did some checking. It looks like I can blow off the new Anthem 276% cost for a HealthNet 108% cost ... at least for a few months. 8% more is much easier to handle than 176%.
For the first time in my life, I will have my physician administer some booster shots: MMR, DPT, maybe others. I've been considering a trip to the various 'Stans (seriously) for a couple of years, and there's a certain vaccination that is recommended for those areas ... unfortunately, the TB vaccination is unreliable, and likely worthless against the strain from the south ...
I have this feeling that things will get real stupid over the next 5 years, and a bunch of childhood diseases will flare up.
Posted by: Arbalest at October 01, 2013 03:27 AM (FlRtG)
Have a care with the TB thing -- back some years, we had a temp at our company who mysteriously disappeared....and when we contacted the agency, we found out she was undergoing medical treatment for TB. Understandably, this was an "oh, shit" moment, and the company offered free TB testing to all employees, contractors, and suppliers (private company). Almost everyone tested clean....except our VP of Engineering (!), who had been vaccinated for TB in Switzerland, and who couldn't be assured to be ok without a six-month course of antibiotics that, among other things, precluded him from drinking -- because the vaccination would do false positives on ordinary scans and you couldn't do scans for resistant strains without ruling out the ordinary.

Case 1 -- B4 the fact slavery -- thru brutality, one takes a slave and tells that person that they are a slave. One makes that slave work and confiscate all production of the waking hours. The slave will do the minimum amount required to avoid the brutality to the extent that the slave chooses (based on the slave's ability to predict a brutal response.)
Case 2 -- After the fact slavery -- One tells a person that what they produce will belong to them, and then after the fact confiscates the production. The unknowing slave has taken risks, worked extra hours, used ingenuity, and done many other things to maximize his own production -- because he believes his production will result in his own wealth.
Which case gains the slaver the most?

Tylenol makes a lot of people dead -- it's either the #1 or #2 cause of acute liver failure in the US and UK. Aspirin, which can contribute to ulcers and trigger Reye's syndrome in youngsters, has its own issues. By comparison, ibuprofen is probably safer than the drive to the instant care facility. I'm not saying it's perfect or that certain people shouldn't avoid it, but it's like the difference between shot at by machine guns, napalmed, or gardening.

I think the conduct of the D's, certainly over the last few days, and the impending pain of ObamaCare will open a lot of eyes and minds ...
... I knew I was going to get hit with an increase ... but 176%? Time to take action.
We dug ourselves out of ... insolvency ... after WW2. We can do it again. Money really is now more like "credits" than gold- or silver-certificates, and the world gets along reasonably well.
Maybe this is a charade, but I don't think so ... as long as the accounts balance ... or as long as mine balance ... I can get along on "credits". The problem is getting others to forcibly ensure that their accounts always balance. This is a plan.

Healthcare is seriously screwed up. It has been so divorced from market forces that the "rack rate" for medical procedures is 5x what a sane market might price 'em, and most of the funds paid into the system are a protection racket that you won't be charged what nobody pays.

to me, the saddest part is the total illiteracy/innumeracy of it all.
for something approaching 500K - 1M years, humans worked on the problem of gravity. Along come Archimedes, Newton, Kepler, Gallileo, et al. and about 500 years later we have suspension bridges, skyscrapers, airplanes, and satellites that can slingshot their way to meet multiple planets in their orbits.
It makes a difference when we no longer have to guess.
The first 5 assumptions of the law of S/D are scarcity, multiple wants, rationality, substitutability, and diminishing marginal valuation (var. law of diminishing returns).
At least 3 (substitutability, multiple wants, dmv) of the basic assumptions are violated when the subject is life sustaining health care. The problem/solutions start with the invalid assumptions.
We could have had a solution that focused on the problem instead of 1600 pages of stupid guesses. Truly pathetic. As a society we should be embarrassed and ashamed.

Too much reliance on the boob tube for information about the world. Most of the people I know who travel overseas end up in gated resorts. They never see the reality of the poverty surrounding them.
When I describe living in a tent, on the roof of a mission in Haiti, as being in nicer conditions than the local population, they don't know whether I'm messing with them or not.

Having to work with the #3 or #4 wire from the service side, concentrates the mind wonderfully. Like handling copperheads at a Appalachian back woods church meeting.
Working one handed as much as possible when in the main box.
Moving slowly and exactly when in the main box.
Relieved when the task is over.

Although the training manuals stress that 110v AC is the real killer (due to it's ubiquity and ease of access by the amateur) 220v AC will knock your dick stiff and you too.
