The 2002 Barrack Obama - Updated
What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt byRichard Perle and Paul WolfowitzSamantha Power and Susan Rice and other armchair, weekend warriors in this administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne. What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like
But I also know thatKarl RoveDavid Axelrod to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income - to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the Great Depression. That's what I'm opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics. Now let me be clear - I suffer no illusions aboutSaddam HusseinBashar Assad. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity. He's a bad guy. The world, and theIraqiSyrian people, would be better off without him.SaddamAssad poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States or to his neighbors, that theIraqiSyrian economy is in shambles, that theIraqiSyrian military a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.
And Your Lamba Mu Name is Mohammed Ali Ackbar
UT Austin has a new Muslim fraternity:
In February this year, America's first Muslim Fraternity was established at the University of Texas; Ali Mahmoud is the President of Alpha Lambda Mu (or Alif Laam Meem) and its founder. [...]
They created the fraternity, based on the principles of Islam - mercy, compassion, justice, integrity, honesty, unity, love, and sincerity...
But no free beer. Or girls. I'm not even sure rock music is allowed. But there will be lots of discussion of the failures of American foreign policy I'm assuming.
Serena Williams Defends 'Rape Culture'
Oh sorry I still had my MSNBC headline generator enabled. What actually happened is that Serena Williams talked about the Steubenville rape case and had the temerity to criticize the female victim:
Williams opined on the case during an interview with Rolling Stone. "I'm not blaming the girl," she said, "but if you're a 16-year-old and you're drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don't take drinks from other people. She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember? It could have been much worse. She's lucky." The online reaction was immediate and furious; Williams had justified "rape culture," many agreed. The closest anyone got to engaging with her musings was a Daily Beast posting that linked Williams's remarks to-what else?-her inevitable interactions with white racism, the "harsh reality" of which allegedly induces in African-American women an extreme ethic of self-reliance to counter the universal indifference to their misfortunes.
And Heather McDonald points out the glaring inconsistency of treating women (and even 16-year old girls) as fully-empowered liberated adults yet with all the same expectations of personal responsibility as a mentally challenged child.
The Williams scourging is a clarifying cultural moment. It should be conceptually possible to separate the issue of the boys' culpability from the question of whether the victim had the power to avoid the assault in the first place by behaving responsibly. Parents tell their children not to get into strangers' cars not because they think that a stranger would be justified in abducting a child who did so, but because not getting into a stranger's car is the best way to avoid kidnapping. But the triumphs of feminism and sexual liberation mean that, despite the claim that strong women can do it all and have it all, one may never, ever suggest that they can avoid date rape by exercising sexual and alcoholic self-control. Doing so risks shifting attention from the one truth that we must always keep before our eyes: the ubiquity of male power, which renders women-everywhere and always-helpless victims. It also risks reviving norms of female modesty that feminism has labeled oppressive relics of patriarchy. The taboo on any acknowledgment of how reckless behavior creates the precondition for date rape means a females-only right to participate in the crude, sexualized world of Girls Gone Wild, without any responsibility for untoward results.
Oh and most of what you've heard about the Stuebenville case is wrong.
Like Rust and Syphillis Br3tt K1mberlin Never Sleeps
And now he's suing everyone who's ever attracted his attention.
Convicted felon Brett Kimberlin has filed a Maryland lawsuit naming bloggers Aaron Walker, W. J. J. Hoge, Robert Stacy McCain, National Bloggers Club President Ali A. Akbar and the anonymous blogger "Kimberlin Unmasked" as defendants.
The defendants believe that the suit is without merit and is part of Kimberlin's continued effort to use lawfare to silence journalists and bloggers who have written about Kimberlin's criminal past. The defendants will not be made available for comment until they have finished initial consultations their respective legal counsel.
The Power To Audit is the Power to Punish
And states like to get in on tax harassment just like the Feds do.
Under the administration of Democratic governor Bill Richardson, New Mexico's labor department sparked controversy in 2006 for auditing the state's Republican Party. The audit, launched shortly after the party criticized the governor harshly, was meant to examine whether it was complying with state laws on employment taxes. After initially claiming that a computer had randomly chosen the GOP for scrutiny, the state admitted that an employee of the labor department had selected the party.
The Real Reason Behind Public Smoking Bans
Was pretty much what you always suspected (and Adam Carolla has ranted about for years) - it was all a made-up scare in order to harass smokers and make them into social outcasts.
Public health officials have long argued the bans are meant to eliminate dangers from secondhand, or "sidestream smoke," reduce the environmental impact of cigarette butts and to keep young, impressionable children from picking up on bad habits. Makes sense, right? But a new article in this month's Health Affairs looks at the shockingly slim evidence behind these bans."I discovered the evidence was really weak," explained lead author Ronald Bayer, a professor at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. "The evidence of harm to non-smokers on the beach or in a park from someone smoking is virtually non-existent."
Bayer is points out that there is, however, an important public health benefit from such bans. "They make it more difficult for smokers to smoke," Bayer told us, "and contribute in an important way to the 'denormalization' of smoking."
But hey it was all for a good cause so lying to the public is forgiven right?

The Lost Fortune of Diana Dors
I happened to come across this while prowling through Wikipedia.
Before she died, Dors apparently hid away what she claimed to be over £2 million in banks across Europe. In 1982, she gave her son Mark Dawson a sheet of paper, on which she told him was a code that would reveal the whereabouts of the money. Her widower Alan Lake supposedly had the key that would crack the code, but as he had committed suicide five months after Dors' death, Dawson was left with an apparently unsolvable code.Dawson sought out computer forensic specialists Inforenz, who recognized the encryption as the Vigenère cipher. Inforenz then used their own cryptanalysis software to suggest a ten-letter decryption key, DMARYFLUCK (short for Diana Mary Fluck, Dors' real name). Although Inforenz was then able to decode the entire message and link it to a bank statement found in some of Lake's papers, the location of the money is still unknown.
Some have speculated that there may have been a second sheet of paper, whose information might have led to the discovery of the money. Channel 4 made a television programme about the mystery, and created a website (now removed) where users could learn more and help solve the mystery.

If I park my car in a bad part of town with the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition, I don't deserve to have it stolen. Never the less, reasonable people would point out that I contributed significantly to why it was stolen. The same goes for other behaviors. Contrary to the belief of feminists and slutwalkers the world over, slutshaming is a good thing. Slutshaming is a way to encourage women to avoid bad habits that increase their risk. Going to parties alone, drinking to excess, getting into a car with a strange boy, all of these things are activities that are dangerous, and that we should be discouraging. Instead, the feminist movement has decided that not only should we not discourage them, we should actively encourage them.

Not that, but one house we had, there was a very large basement, and in one corner, there was a room built with concrete block walls all overlapping each other because radiation only goes in a straight line. Had shelves on every side for provisions and stuff. It was kinda cool, although we never actually used it for anything, the whole place was huge. It was either in Long Island or Providence, I can't remember.

Blonde European sex bombs and brunette Italian sex bombs were popular in the fifties and into the sixties. The blondes I used to get mixed up--Anita Eckberg, Elke Sommer, etc.
The Italians were easier to keep straight: Sophia Loren, Claudia Cardinale, Gina Lollabrigida, etc.
And they were all voluptuous-- not these trendy skin-and-bone types with the silicone implants and hairless snatches.

How the Ohio Correctional Reception Center guards tried to revive Ariel Castro.
Guard 1: Aw, man. He hung himself!
Guard 2: It's hanged, not hung.

Guard 2: People get hanged, or are hanged. Things get hung.
Guard 1: Really? Never knew that. Well, let's get him down and try to revive him.

No, no.. I mean NOW. Walking around, etc. If you flex your abs, it takes pressure off the back muscles. It sort of "stabilizes" the back instead of forcing it to do any work.

I've heard that rotating heat and ice is the way to go. That is usually for a "surface" muscle, though. My calf would always go postal on me during soccer and they I would stretch, ice, heat/rub, ice, heat, etc.
The back is a different animal, depending on which set of muscles have been tweaked. I can only say that getting up, walking around and tightening the abs did actually help.
Posted by: Slapweasel at September 04, 2013 06:47 PM (lq3Ak)
It was explained to me once (and it makes sense) that the muscles that pull on the front and back of the spine are like cable stays on a telephone pole. If one gets to strong it will go out of balance and end in pain. And we all use our back muscles more in a day than our stomach muscles.

Flying glass and debris. The fireball isn't the problem for most people, it's the shards of widow tearing through their chests that are more dangerous. When the meteorite struck Russia this year or last, several people were injured because they went to look out the window when they saw the flash.

Depends on what refrigerant system it is and how efficient it was.
An old R-12 system is virtually impossible to maintain due to the R-12 ban.
Newer R-22 is can be maintained, but is slated for phase out in the coming years. There are R-22 compatible refrigerant on the market now. New R-22 systems can't be sold. Repairs can be made, but the tech is effectively in a end-of-life cycle at this point.
Even newer R-410a is the most popular for residential application. The problem with R-410a systems is their lube oil (a POE oil) is incompatible with R-22's (a PAG oil). A super thorough line flushing would be needed to transition R-22 piping to for R-410 use.
R-410 also operates at dramatically higher pressures than R-22 did, and might cause weak solder joints that worked with R-22 to fail.
There's a huge difference in efficiency in old cheap "builder special" R-22 systems and newer higher efficiency R-22 or R-410 systems too.
I did the electrical work for a neighbor who was swapping out a 25 year old R-22 for a newer equivalent tonnage R-22 a few years ago and moving it to a different location (hence the wiring).
The old one was drawing 22 amps @220v, the new one was drawing less than 8 amps @220v.

If you are talking about central air, you definitely could save a lot of money by having a professional replace the compressor. They will recharge the refrigerant too.
If you have a window unit or portable unit it might be close to the same price to get a new unit with a lot less hassle than doing a repair.

And have them flush and nitrogen purge the lines whatever is done. If it was a burnout they should also install a suction line dryer for a few weeks to clean up any residual acid.
If you get a new unit get a heatload calculation for your house, it may result in a smaller unit. If they won't do a heatload don't hire them. Most units used to be oversized, and the ductwork was insufficient.

The compressor unit of an AC system has a bunch of different parts. It takes gaseous coolant (that was evaporated back in your house by the heat of the air inside) and first runs it through an actual compressor -- just like an air compressor, that ups the pressure to the point where the coolant is more liquid and hotter than hell. The actual compressor is run by an electric motor. That hot coolant is then run through a coil -- which takes up most of the space of a compressor unit -- to get down to regular outside temperature. The coil has a fan blowing on it to help the cooling. The coolant is then piped back inside the house to be evaporated.
If your electric motor that runs the compressor died, it should be relatively simple to change. If the start capacitor died, as mentioned up thread, it should be trivial to replace. If the coil burnt through -- new compressor unit. If the compressor itself is toasted......er, a new unit sounds quite plausible.
As mentioned upthread, they're screwing around with the coolants, and the inside evaporator coil must be compatible with the fluid used if you aren't replacing that as well. But seven years isn't really all that old. In fact, you should check into whether what is wrong may actually be under warranty.

I've read some motor burnout studies that showed even trace amounts of acids can start the erosion process in a matter of months leading to another burnout pretty quickly.
If there's any doubt at all, you can't go wrong replacing the piping. That acid and crap can hide in low spots and dips in the line if someone does a quick shitty flush job.

Compressor replacement will be cheaper, your unit is not that old. Have them do a going over check capacitors, motors, coils cleaned etc.
Depends how the compressor died, if it seized or burned out. The refrigerant could still be good, have it recovered and saved. R22 is $20 a pound or more. if it burned out the refrig will smell bad and be useless. The refrigerant isn't lost when compressor stops.
Don't let them sell you an extra highSEER unit if you replace, big $ and it depends alot on the install work, ducting and how tight your house insulation etc is, or you won't get the performance you paid for.
A heatload calc will determine what size you really need.
Seer is like EPA mileage on cars, nobody gets what they say.

The neck and shoulder pain is some kind of pinched nerve shit in my lower back. I went to a chiropractor long enough to figure out that it was when he got my lower back to pop that the shoulder pain went away. I figured out how to stretch and get it to pop by myself.
That I what I need the flexoril for--when I get like that the muscles in my lower back tense up and I can't get anything to move. The flx relaxes me enough I can do a little twist in the doorway and get everything back where it should be. I'll still be sore but the sharp stabby neck and shoulder pain is gone, which is a major plus.

That'll most likely be an R-22 system. It might be worth repairing if it wasn't a motor burnout that contaminated all the other components of the system.
A failure at 7yo probably was a shitty original installation that had contamination in it from day one. A lot of sleazy techs don't want to wait around for the time it takes for a vacuum pump to fully evacuate the system before charging.
Back when R-22 was cheap, the sleaziest would just blow R-22 through the lines as a half-ass purge while tightening the connectors leaving some water vapor (which is bad) in there, then put the remaining charge in. Those kind of shit jobs would run for a few years then start to fail...guaranteed.

Nobody gets called on treason if enough people are behind it.
I particularly liked Rove's schtick about how if Assad wins, Iran and Russia win, and if he loses they lose. Because addressing the fact that the operation is aid and comfort for Al Qaeda must never happen.

Right now we are back home after a week w/ my Mom in Cardiac intensive care, after 2 operations and 2 serious problems. We spent more time there than planned but really had to get back to work eventually, she seemed OK.
Now I learn tonight there are still more problems w/ my Mom. What to do?Life is tough sometimes. What matters is how you deal w/ the crap that comes your way.
Just keep true to yourself and your values and keep on keeping on.

"Look, Langley and MI6 have high level assets in the Syrian military. We always have a colonel ready to go. We obliterate the Assads in their bunker, our colonel proclaims that the beast is dead, that the military is now in charge, that they are prepared to call a cease-fire and will negotiate in good faith with legitimate opposition forces. ... He asks for a UN peacekeeping force right away, and for the immediate departure of all "foreign forces" from Syria - Hezbollah, the Iranians, the Russians, and the al-Qaeda crowd. QED."
You had me at "cakewalk." Perhaps you'd like to list all the other heads of state that we obliterated in their bunkers cheaply, because I seem to have forgotten them. Even if your play pretend scenario is available, why in the world do you think any of the people currently fighting the Assad regime would stand down to some random colonel who served him?
Such fact-based experiential reasoning is why Michael was on Ronald Reagan's National Security Council but is not on Zero's. The real bottom line on Syria is that the Assad regime is Iran's proxy. Iran is our Main Enemy in the Moslem world, not Al Qaeda troglodytes, and eliminating its proxy in Syria would do critical damage to it.
What damage has Iran succeeded in doing to us? You'll have to remind me as I seem to have forgotten that to. For the sake of honesty, make sure you compare that to the effects the Al Qaeda troglodytes have had.
And if Iran is the real problem, stop being a pussy and call for a bombing campaign against Iran.

Not that one would expect anything more from an illiterate airheaded affirmative action non-entity like Obama, but Wolfowitz and Perle (for whom Obama would never be qualified to be a low-level intern) did not push any ideological agendas anywhere.
Free clue, idiot (and many many others, not limited to the ignorant irresponsible pro-authoritarian pro-racist "left"): removing an intolerable and uncontainable threat in the post-9/11 era of global terrorism with clear potential for a link-up of the worst/most dangerous regimes and non-state actors is simple common sense, utterly practical, and has nothing to do with any ideology.
Obama is the symptom, not the cause, of an irretrievably dumbed-down and morally inverted society.

-As from last season, they're still using that horrible lighting halo reflecting in the eyes during the extreme close-up interviews (just like Amateur Allure! Gee, where'd they get that idea from?).
-Thanks, editor, for showing the dull fights in their entirety and putting the slug fests in highlights.
-How many refs do they need now? In past seasons, only two were necessary. Now it's five by my count.
-That's a great editing job, leaving those early clips of both female coaches looking bored during the fights. Why not just have Dana clearly forbid texting before the bouts?
-Worst teasers for the upcoming season, ever. There's no crying in MMA without a towel over one's head.

About 30 years ago, my gf worked at a Crown Books in Santa Barbara. One day, while her manager (also female) was walking across the parking lot back from lunch, a random stranger nodded to her, smiled, and said, "nice pair." They were still talking about it when I went to pick the gf up that afternoon. I think I still have toothprints in my tongue from that.

I'm prone to astigmatism and myopia, and have worked in accounting and auditing where you have to examine figures very carefully -- and, as a result, you sometimes can't see lines well for an hour after you stop working....so I actually sometimes recognize people by their gait before I can clearly see their faces.

i hear that one of the chief complaints at her old stable was that SHE THOUGHT THE GOATS WERE ALL HERS! and yes she has cats in her stall. I dont think she was a tough sell on the concept as she was pretty genial about the chickens and bunnies living in with her, at the place she was appropriating goats. I have no idea why this was upsetting to the proprietor. Goats and race horses go together like peanut butter and jelly.
if you wanted to throw a racehorse off his game you just stole his stable pal, the pet goat. and to this day upsetting someone is "Getting their goat."

That's not a bad idea. Self-deprecating humor is good because you don't take yourself too seriously and most people don't remember names that well.
I've called customers at the tanning salon the wrong names. As long as I told them that I was sincerely an idiot, I was excused. Your face may have to turn red, however... lol.

I've mentioned it before, but I am absolutely terrible with names. I've had people working for me that I saw daily who I couldn't remember the names of....but I knew them, where they lived, what work they'd done, what car they drove....
We live on a standard rectangular block, but the subdivision has a weird hand-shaped block next to us, so we walk around that one instead. There's a couple there who I knew for years as "Kati's mom and dad"....because, while I have something blocking my memory of people names, I can remember the names of pets -- Kati was their yellow lab.
By contrast, I can remember numbers without even trying. I remember my student ID number from college -- 40232XX5, my Crocker VISA number -- 4040 165 001 506 [they "upgraded" me to a 16-digit number and Crocker is no more], the Federal ID number of a company I worked for in 1990 -- 94-268XX46, their FedEx account number -- 1012-3X3X-9......kind of handy for an accountant.

if Grim had his druthers there would be. But goats are canny and evil geniuses and i have no wish to have an escape artist in residence who would be inclined to let all the other animals out too!
after watching a neighbor's goat get loose, and then proceed to free every dog on the block from their yards, and go down the street in an unruly mob, goat leading the way, overturning garbage cans... i just dont know if i want that kind of trouble on my property. OTOH, my friend had two pygmy goats she hand raised from birth, trained to use a litterbox, so they could live in the house and even sleep in her bed with her.

One of his responsibilities was to mentor the ANP at a remote 10-man outpost. Only way to get fresh meat there was to bring in live goats and slaughter them right before the meal. He showed up one time, they had that nights dinner tied up out back. On the ground all around it lay several used condoms. He didn't know whether to be disgusted, or proud of them for knowing how to put them on.
But he didn't eat dinner with them. Ever again.

It's a very bizarre blind spot. With you, I can remember initials, and I think I've got your last name, but your first name keeps squirming away. With Kratos, I have his first name, but his family name just fails to cooperate. Neither of Bebe's names shows up right, and I can remember both of Merovign's names, but have trouble remembering that the person and the nic are the same guy. It's kind of embarrassing to even talk about it, 'cause I've danced around it all my life (my sister's kids -- my niece and nephew -- were difficult for a long, long time).
It would be all too easy to ascribe it to a reaction to my own name, but I think it's too pervasive for that.

Showed up to my first squadron, still didn't know anybody. One Friday afternoon, about 8 of us were sitting around waiting for the end of the day. Everybody was talking, but I was sitting in the corner just watching, trying to figure out who everybody was. One guy says, "look at the new guy just watching us, he could kill us all and nobody would know who did it. Like the Unabomber." Not sure where that connection came from but it stuck. A couple of weeks later they shortened it.
That was a helicopter squadron, and most people didn't get callsigns, but that was a cool one, so I started signing emails with it and got nametags made. My real name lends itself to a pretty lame one, so I was happy with Bomber. Some people still call me that, but not many.

I hate to break this to you -- but you're part of the problem. Why do you say, "she is not in the genius range"? I was in the MGM program throughout my school days, so I was interacting with a lot of people in "the genius range" and there are a lot of doofuses. We were told to hunker down under our desks. Why, I don't know. Even as a child I questioned the practicality of that.
Just think, before the A bomb, there was no metaphor involving the word fallout. As in, it was a mistake and he experienced some fallout. Or: I wouldn't do that if I were you, think of the fallout.
Someone should write a book: "War Metaphors."
Posted by: fuck and cover at September 04, 2013 10:46 PM (qKpun)"
Getting under a desk is protection against initial blast damage. It improves your odds in case the ceiling collapses. It is a good idea if you are in an earthquake. It does not provide any protection against fallout but helps keep you alive long enough to worry about fallout.
I went to a Catholic school where we would go into a central hallway without windows so that we would be away from flying glass. The nuns would then lead us through an Act of Contrition so that when the Communists killed us, our sins would be forgiven. We would then say the Rosary while we waited to die. Or the all clear sounded which is what usually happened. Kids these days miss out on having it be an ordinary event to have school interrupted by sitting in a hallway and wait for to be killed by Communists. It helps put other things in perspective.

If your problem is flying glass and falling bits of ceiling, it is better to be under the desk. If your problem is a roof collapse it is better to be beside the desk (or any other furniture) -- the desk will collapse also, but might hold a large enough space for you if you are beside it, not under it.

I love my Mom.
My Mom isn't as smart as Sarah Palin.

And other peoples, they have to work, Just watch me now!
And there's even some evil mothers
Well they're gonna tell you that everything is just dirt
Y'know that, women, never really faint
And that villains always blink their eyes, woo!
And that, y'know, children are the only ones who blush!
And that, life is just to die!
And, everyone who ever had a heart
They wouldn't turn around and break it
And anyone who ever played a part
Oh wouldn't turn around and hate it!
Sweet Jane! Whoa-oh-oh! Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane!

Probably the only real way of having any vestige of assurance there is to get something with open source firmware available. Which still only amounts to a promise for most people but at least the possibility is there of someone with the right skills giving it a thorough audit.

That reminds me. I think I've found all of the decent capacity ATA drives that I had in storage. It comes down to four units. I'm going to see if they'll let me send them via Media Mail, which would be a lot cheaper.
