Quote of the Day I: Unspeakable Truths
There are facts that were once known, sometimes generally known, that are now known to but a few. Some of this information loss is caused by changes in occupational patterns - farmers automatically know something about heritability, clerks and workers in dark satanic mills, not so much. But mostly these facts are unpleasant, at least to some ears. People who mention such facts are punished - generally in terms of their careers, not being invited to parties, etc. That's enough to cause a 10 or 20-fold drop in visibility, which ought to tell you something about how brave people are. Many people assume that everyone is secretly aware of those unpleasant facts, but that is not the case. A generation that has grown up never hearing those facts will be almost entirely unaware of them, in part because their personal life experiences don't impinge on those patterns much. This means that they can and sometimes do make serious mistakes that those 'secretly aware' types never would.
...Someone I know at TAC opined that everyone knows this stuff, and talking about it is just mean. I think he is mistaken: you have to state important facts every so often, or nobody knows them anymore.
Political correctness is mostly about making uncomfortable facts unspeakable.
And Is It Wrong That This Thought Occurs to Me About Once a Week?
Plus via the Ewok courtesy of @bert_huggins:
We're talking 1948 now. I'm back in the Pentagon and I get notice from the chief of staff, Carl Spaatz, the first chief of staff of the air force. When we got to General Spaatz's office, General Doolittle was there, and a colonel named Dave Shillen. Spaatz said, "Gentlemen, I just got word from the president he wants us to go over to his office immediately." On the way over, Doolittle and Spaatz were doing some talking; I wasn't saying very much. When we got out of the car we were escorted right quick to the Oval Office. There was a black man there who always took care of Truman's needs and he said, "General Spaatz, will you please be facing the desk?" And now, facing the desk, Spaatz is on the right, Doolittle and Shillen. Of course, militarily speaking, that's the correct order: because Spaatz is senior, Doolittle has to sit to his left. Then I was taken by this man and put in the chair that was right beside the president's desk, beside his left hand. Anyway, we got a cup of coffee and we got most of it consumed when Truman walked in and everybody stood on their feet. He said, "Sit down, please," and he had a big smile on his face and he said, "General Spaatz, I want to congratulate you on being first chief of the air force," because it was no longer the air corps. Spaatz said, "Thank you, sir, it's a great honor and I appreciate it." And he said to Doolittle: "That was a magnificent thing you pulled flying off of that carrier," and Doolittle said, "All in a day's work, Mr President." And he looked at Dave Shillen and said, "Colonel Shillen, I want to congratulate you on having the foresight to recognize the potential in aerial refueling. We're gonna need it bad some day." And he said thank you very much.
Then he looked at me for 10 seconds and he didn't say anything. And when he finally did, he said, "What do you think?" I said, "Mr President, I think I did what I was told." He slapped his hand on the table and said: "You're damn right you did, and I'm the guy who sent you. If anybody gives you a hard time about it, refer them to me."
Studs Terkel: Anybody ever give you a hard time?
Paul Tibbets: Nobody gave me a hard time.

Cult-itecture: Appreciating The Compounds Of Reclusive Communities
Waco, Texas, the Divine Lorraine, and Jonestown were radically different, yet each existed within a similar American terrain-rapidly globalizing, urbanizing, and increasingly fearful. Made from material odds and ends, their leaders sought sites that were neither here nor there: an abandoned hotel, an unused ranch, a barren desert, or a cheap tract of land in a faraway country. They chose land that no one else wanted and no one had time to visit. Both distinct and stubborn, the architecture of the American cult becomes a way to understand them.
...Online one can easily find directions to Rajneeshpuram, Spahn Ranch, the Divine Lorraine, and even Jonestown. Or, even more strangely, travel accounts. One man says about his visit to Jonestown, Guyana "There's nothing left but an old tractor, a turned over van, and a mass grave".
I remember hearing about the Rajneeshpuram in Oregon in the 80s but had no idea that it was completely abandoned in 1986.
Why the Chinese and Russians Aren't Our Strategic Partners in Space
Somehow I doubt this is intended for Russian satellites:
China's military recently launched three small satellites into orbit as part of Beijing's covert anti-satellite warfare program, according to a U.S. official. The three satellites, launched July 20 by a Long March-4C launcher, were later detected conducting unusual maneuvers in space indicating the Chinese are preparing to conduct space warfare against satellites, said the official who is familiar with intelligence reports about the satellites.
One of the satellites was equipped with an extension arm capable of attacking orbiting satellites that currently are vulnerable to both kinetic and electronic disruption.
And then the Russkies may say nyet rockets for you:
Russia's Security Council is reportedly considering a ban on supplying the US with powerful RD-180 rocket engines for military communications satellites as Russia focuses on building its own new space launch center, Vostochny, in the Far East.
A ban on the rockets supply to the US heavy booster, Atlas V, which delivers weighty military communications satellites and deep space exploration vehicles into orbit, could impact NASA's space programs - not just military satellite launches.
Ah smart diplomacy...good times, good times.
Just Another Day in Afghanistan
KABUL - Afghan security forces have arrested eight policemen for accidentally killing six children when firing a rocket into a river to catch fish, officials said Wednesday. The incident took place last Friday in the Doshi district of the northern province of Baghlan when policemen on the bank of a river fired a rocket-propelled grenade into the water.
"The rocket went astray and hit a place where children were playing, killing six and wounding two others," the interior ministry said in a statement.

Cops Break Up "Out of Control Sex Party" At Masonic Temple
Man those Shriners sure know how to party.
Cops in Battle Creek, Mich. said they broke up something of an orgy early Sunday morning at a Masonic Temple. Sources told us the first officer to walk inside, was shocked to find a couple performing a lewd sex act, along with drugs, multiple nude women and men videotaping it all behind these closed doors. Cops made "multiple arrests" though reports on the story don't make clear what, if any, charges were filed against party attendees.
But before you rush out to join - it turns out that this little shindig may not have involved any freemasons at all:
A temple spokesperson told WWMT that an outside group ponied up $900 to host a "dance party" at the temple that night.
The group thingy. And the middle class.
And my Twitter spew. For the children.

I've always thought the most intriguing backstory of the Manhattan Project was the Demon Core. Which killed two men before even having been set off.
I also note that a number of the Manhattan Project physicists absorbed radiation in considerable excess of modern safety standards for nuclear workers, to say nothing of the tighter standards for civilians, and yet managed to live to ripe old ages.
Some of the MP crew died early of cancer. The vast majority of whom were smokers who had never spent much time near the fissionable materials.

Think of all the times you were actually better off in running at the monsters. Balls to the wall spraying lead and screaming and then think of the times you hid in corner and got your ass handed to you.
Yeah. THAT.
Keep moving. Move diagonally across the front firing zone of the shooter. Zig Zag. Duck. Go forward then back then forward again. Find cover but don't stay there cowering. Find a weapon. Throw stuff at them. Yell. Point behind them and call out "look out he's the shooter" or something. Distract them anyway you can while making constant progress to an exit.
Pick up a small table or chair to use as a shield. You'd be surprised the deflecting ability of even plastic. Much better than nothing or your skin.
And mainly, pay attention to your fellow employees. See a guy in the office who recently got fired badly? Be alert.
Someone gotten a divorce, talked about their spouse having a lover? Be alert.
Bad body hygiene and incoherence are some other warning signs.
Most all the folks who have gone wacko and started killing people, gave off signs they were going. Your not the police so you can jump to conclusions and you probably don't have a relationship with those people anyway so what does it hurt you to step back a bit when they seem on the edge?
Of course it's easy to say in the comfort of my home with no threat in sight.
YMMV

Some dude robs a Target store in a little podunk town between Sacramento and Davies (as in UCDavies) and takes off with the cops and CHP in hot pursuit, barreling down I-80. Then for some unknown reason he get off and goes straight for the main gate of Travis AFB. Apparently said dude must have know that those guards shoot to kill and even if he had survived that, those barriers that go up with the push of a button would have shredded him and his car. So he stops just short of Main gate and keeps pointing a gun out the window until they finally tazered the shit out of him. What a show, better then TV

One that sticks with me is The Station nightclub fire where Great White was playing and lit the sound foam with pyrotechnics. Massive stampedes at the doorways, 100 people died. How many could have torn their way through the drywall and siding, and escaped through the walls?

Absolutely.
It was designed to curtain freedom of speech.
First came political correctness...then came all the exultations about Multiculturalism and how we should "celebrate diversity".
Which is a recipe for disaster.
It's a recipe for devaluing the culture of the host country, and creating deep divisions and chaos.

Anyone's guess whether the gift shop stuff's the real deal. These days, most of the trinitite's been scooped up but if you look around, the wind blowing the sand around exposes a fair amout of it still scattered about. The guards *are* on the lookout; I had two of them standing right over me (I didn't know it until I stood up) while I was popping a macro shot of a piece in the sand.
I dunno if the rules are to prevent the dispersion of any remaining plutonium from the Trinity site or just for general radioactivity control. We did test a couple of pieces of trinitite and got signatures for cesium, americium and a little bismuth-214, the latter created by regular cosmic ray interactions.

But the Spider Mastermind? Yeah. a .50 cal size chaingun is a bit harder to direct assault. However quick diagonal movement IF you can get close enough, reduces him pretty quickly because like most large things, he's not agile.

You may be right with the Archvile... IIRC, it uses a "blast" that widens out, like a cone. If you get in close to it's side you can avoid the hit? Further out the blast cone takes in the entire map, minus hard cover. Running diagonal with the Spider Mastermind doesn't help. It's fire takes in everything, everywhere in the direction it's facing. Doesn't matter what you do. You got to get in real close and get behind it, using that tactic. Is that what you mean? I usually just stayed put and used cover to fire around against Archvile and Spider. If you had enough cover between you and Spider, you could get behind it, or fire at it's legs when it's gun was hidden. Never had luck trying the run and gun method against it. The field of fire just hammers your armour and life, tout d'suite.

Many years ago, I saw some consumer show where they tested The Door Club, kind of an odd-shaped piece of brass that you would install in the floor befor your front door to limit how far it could open.
They tested the thing by installing it and having some brawny types go at the door.
It didn't take the brawny types long to realize they could punch through the wall next to the door.
As I recall, the verdict was "yeah, it works, but..."

washing machine. Did a load of wash, and was hanging it out on the line,
and discovered a pattern of round brown rust spots on the clothes that
match the hole spacing in the washer drum. The washer is an LG Tromm
front loader, about 3 years old. I'm on well water, with a softener, and
the house plumbing is hard copper. I ran several faucets, and saw no
rust in the water. I'm guessing either the cast-iron pressure pump
spewed out a cloud of rust, or maybe there was something in the pocket
of one of the blue jeans that released a clump of rust.
Anyone here ever encounter such a thing? The drum in the washer is stainless steel, by the way.

OK, so here's a theory.....I dunno about your washer, but mine introduces water in the middle (back), smushes it around with detergent for a while, then pumps water out and spins while pumping. Then it puts more water in the middle (back), smushes it around "rinsing", then pumps water out and spins while pumping. Water only goes OUT through the holes, so the spots should be fuzzy-edged as the contaminated water is filtered through the clothes -- and everything should be 5% stained from the smushing.
So. how to get water moving through the holes into the fabric? Only time that makes sense would be the introduction of the rinse water (especially true if you did hot wash/cold rinse). Since the clothes would have been spun against the drum, you could get sharp-edged spots at that time. My guess would be that the cold water valve is rusting out and that you haven't run a load for a while, then did a hot wash/cold rinse. After the wash, drain, and spin, the cold water feed blew all the rust off the valve and into the outside of the drum, staining the clothes.

Yes the revenge was sweet but MLB screwed the Ravens, not fair to them or their fans - they will call baseball games for rain, you think they could've found a way to make reschedule the O's ...
The NFL putting Flacco on our stadium was also an insult, to both sets of fans, as it certainly added to the home team motivation ...
Personally, I'm still mad at Leon Lett for a similar fumble in the big game that resulted in my beloved Broncos remaining in the record books for worse super bowl loss ever - the reminder tonight might result in a strongly worded letter to him tomorrow ...

It was like an Everything Cereal. The base cereal was cornflake, but dashed with sugar, and then they had bits of walnuts in it (or some kind of nut), some of which stuck to the cornflakes. And then there were like either raisins or tiny apple bits. For some reason I think there was some unexpected ingredient, not cocoanut but something like that.
it was fantastic. It was marketed to adults not children but it was plenty sweet believe you me. Just enough.
It might have had dried cranberries.

i wasn't specifically looking for Kaboom comments, was just looking at the top thread.

Ace, I absolutely LOVED the Kaboom thing! Totally MARVELOUS!! Couldn't stop reading over-and-over again. GENIUS!!!
Well, I actually read it once, and chuckled several times, and felt a knot of worry get tighter and tighter and tighter with each chuckle. Are you ok, man? Seriously? Y'know I love you like a brother.....is Kaboom a last grasp for Hope?

It was like an Everything Cereal. The base cereal was cornflake, but dashed with sugar, and then they had bits of walnuts in it (or some kind of nut), some of which stuck to the cornflakes. And then there were like either raisins or tiny apple bits. For some reason I think there was some unexpected ingredient, not cocoanut but something like that.
it was fantastic. It was marketed to adults not children but it was plenty sweet believe you me. Just enough.
It might have had dried cranberries.
I don't suppose anyone will remember this Mystery Cereal but it lives, like the Road Warrior, in my memory.

true, but it is marketed to the poor to keep them content to have less. It is also marketed to the slightly-better-off-than-poor to get them to give up. The scheme is, I think, to reduce competition for the marginal members of the aristocracy so that people like Joe Kennedy III can hold a steady job without being too embarrassed at his incompetency.
Posted by: ace at September 05, 2013 10:23 PM (/IWYB)
it's a semi-major cereal, not some kind of "Alternative" or "Independent" cereal.
it might have had honey. I'm 90% sure it did.
Pretty much it was like "Just throw in everything you put into all other cereals except for puffed rice."

I went and googled the "six day war" and learned all about the battles the state of Israel faced back when. And about the foes they faced, the Egyptians and the Jordanians. And how the Israelies persevered.
And then I went and googled about Muslim killings of folks they didn't like - such as gays, rape victims, Christians.
I'm of the opinion that if we were to go into Syria and do a limited tap-dance like strike, it would fuel the nasties and get them ready to launch against Israel.
But part of me wants them to bring it - but we don't have the leader we need in order to finish the deal.

andy proposed discussing it but I kind of shot it down. I literally have nothing left to say. If you read the article, you know what I mean. I worked on that thing from, seriously, 7:30 to 5am in the morning, tinkering, adding pictures, etc.
When andy brought it up I was like, "You think I actually could possibly say another thing about Kaboom?"
So we wound up not talking about it.
The only joke I can remember not including in it was:
Kaboom is to cereals what Spencer Gifts is to Christmas gifts.
It's for when you want to tell someone that sometimes not even the thought counts.

Logprof, I drafted Decker, so I feel your pain - might be a long season ...
Kaboom was some funny funny shit, although I might have liked the earlier version better - the spontaneous hopelessness was surreal. Unfortunately, it triggered too many bad childhood memories to top my all time favorite, and the post that brought me here, the democrat contenders glossed as D&D mythos.
I would've loved a chance at an upgrade to Kaboom, but my sister and I never found any in the dumpster behind the Target ...

that is possible. I know I ate that.
That doesn't sound all Pimped Up like this Ur-Cereal I'm discussing though.
I know whatever they did to the cornflakes, the honey or sugar, kept the cornflakes relatively crisp in milk.

Mamet would know how to write the movie. It would be about the quiet resentment towards Aaron Sorkin, the kid who never could grasp Kaboom, but laughed with other Apple Jacks kids from the pantry at the Kaboomer who was mowing his mom's lawn for 5 dollars and then rode an old Huffy bicycle home, while Sorkin and his Apple Jacks brats wizzed by on their 5 speed Schwinns with the banana seat

But it had a special kind of greatness back then, before they brought in all the shiny glitz. Vegas in my memories will always be the faded oasis of hopelessness I visited for trade shows like Comdex. We always made a point of eating breakfast at the Circus Circus buffet at least once while we were there.
You heard of boom towns? Classic Las Vegas was a Kaboom town.
But when it comes to death in a box cereals, I'll always be wary of Frosted Flakes, which actually almost killed me. The last time I ate it was in 1971, a few weeks before my seventh birthday. One bowl in the morning and emergency surgery to remove my appendix by early evening.

You got the job at the Dairy Queen, but were you the kid in the dorky hat who took the order of the head cheerleader with the big tits?
Hell no, your job was to lug the powder mix and syrup for the kid in the dorky hat, who at least got to look at the cheerleader. Then you got to haul the empty syrup jugs out back and sweep the floor.
After the SAT's you got the brochures from your local community college with the smiles on the student you knew weren't Kaboomers
Your vacation? Kaboomers rode in the ugly underpowered station wagon to Florida. Not to stay in a hotel, but with relatives who lived on the empty unincorporated tract developments of Broward County

Don't forget the shoes, kbdabear. I had to go to school in weird non-brand sneakers (and garanimals) with no arch that killed my feet and lasted about a month while all the cool kids had adidas and early nikes. I guess that's why when I started making real money I started buying adidas - I think I have like 18 pair now.
I also have retained my taste for sardines (esp. in mustard sauce), as other's lunch discards were all that was available at the time. All of this is true.
I wasn't a Kaboomer, I aspired to be one - a wanna-be Kaboomer is even sadder, if that is possible. Mom was too proud for food stamps - bright side is this fierce independent streak has stayed with me, and I swore my kid would never face the same - and she didn't ...
