I understand the attraction the buddy system has for a man who, as a state legislator, perfected the art of voting "present" on hard questions. But it's hard to see this as anything other than rank political cowardice.
The buck stopped with Truman. For Obama, the buck is kryptonite.

In Stockholm on Wednesday, the president said that the credibility of the world, America, Congress, and the international community is on the line. Everybody is on the hook for his red line, except for the one person who actually drew it.
I'd love to see the genius in that argument, but it looks like clear-cut stupidity to me.

In other words it's just Obama following the classic Obama M.O. that got him into the White House twice.

Soon the military will salute respectfully and loose the hell of hundreds of cruise missiles in an effort that will, inevitably, kill a few of those we wish to protect. They will do it with all the professionalism and skill we expect from the world's most proficient military. I wish Kerry would take a moment to look at the images from this week's hearings before we go to war again.

DC Going After Tourists For Empty Cartridges

Because apparently they've solved all those pesky murders that happen daily.

Washington police are operating under orders to arrest tourists and other non-residents traveling with spent bullet or shotgun casings, a crime that carries a $1,000 fine, a year in jail and a criminal record, according to a new book about the city's confusing gun laws.
"Empty shell casings are considered ammunition in Washington, D.C., so they are illegal to possess unless you are a resident and have a gun registration certificate," pens Emily Miller in her investigative book, "Emily Gets Her Gun: . But Obama Wants to Take Yours."
Under the law, live or empty brass and plastic casings must be carried in a special container and unavailable to drivers. Having one, for example, in a cup holder or ash tray is illegal.

The Cult of Complexity

Many complexity cultists are progressives. Notice how progressives often try to score points in a debate (or shut it down) by saying that their opponent's idea is "too simplistic." The truth has got to be complex for such people.
...Sophisticated people love simplicity. Those who go in for complexity (or who visit complex.com) are too unsophisticated to know that. It's simply ironic that the Cult of Complexity consists of rather simple people who suffer from some psychological complex, probably insecurity about their intellects.
People glom onto complexity because they think that it makes them look smarter. People invoke complexity to set themselves apart... and above. The unspoken message is that they understand things that you don't. You're not complicated enough to understand this complex stuff; leave the thinking to us.

Hollywood, Japan, and the First Law of Politics

Robert Conquest's First Law of Politics posits that "Everyone is conservative about what he knows best," and Hollywood is no different. Last night, I watched the Blu-Ray of Black Rain, starring Michael Douglas, and directed by Ridley Scott. Released in 1989, in-between Michael Keaton's Gung Ho and Sean Connery's Rising Sun, the film is the second in Hollywood's unofficial late-'80s and early-'90s trilogy of films warning American audiences that Japan was about to supplant America as a world superpower, because of its powerful, all-knowing government, intertwined corporatist business environment, and collectivist thinking.

...Meanwhile in reality, on the disc's making-of featurette, Ridley Scott and producer Sherry Lansing discuss how they had to ultimately abandon Japan as a filming location, because the rigid local government in each city the crew filmed in required Kafkaesque massive amounts of paperwork, demanded to know where every light would be placed, and wouldn't permit even a half hour of overtime shooting.

The only reason I even remember Black Rain is because I happened to see it in a theater in Nagoya, Japan and during most of the movie I kept wondering what the Japanese audience around me thought of its portrayal of Japan.

New Words Added to the Dictionary in the '90s: Where Are They Now?

Some have caught on and some now seem completely dated.

Browser: This one has stuck. It certainly is more likely to mean the piece of software we use to move around the web than someone looking through a store.
Digerati: This is another word used primarily by newspaper columnists to discuss large, vague groups of people, as far as I can tell. It is certainly still in use, though dubiously useful.
Infobahn: This synonym for "information superhighway" never caught on. Too German sounding for American ears, I reckon.
Phone Sex: Still around, though I think it's lost its 900-number paid-for connotation. Now, the meaning seems more like "voice sexting."
Voice Mail: Sadly, the word and phenomenon persist. (Though at some point, people deleted the space: voicemail.)

67 Anyway, I think there's a Laffer curve sort of thing for complexity, where there's a sweet spot and if you go too "simple" you can lose a lot of the value. Brutalist architecture is incredibly uncomplex, and it's boring and shitty and people can't wait to tear it town. Baroque's all fussy a bitch to clean and restore, but it's interesting to look at.

My son has a planner for middle school. The entire freaking theme of the planner is anti-bullying. Every week there are blurbs in it about what YOU can do to prevent bullying and stupid "steps to respect" etc.

(should we scrape the playground? restrict kids from outdoor play? close the park? etc.) Citizens were present. dump sites were arranged, etc. In the US the feds would have taken over and fucked it all up, but in Japan each city dealt with it minimizing waste, distress, delay, and unfairness. Compare to the US -- park your car on the street when they are going to make a movie -- fuck you it's towed. Own a shop where they want to put a trailer -- fuck you it's inaccessible for a week. Sleep with a window facing a street -- fuck you we need the lights shinning in your window. So, maybe it's difficult to make a movie here, but maybe those assholes from hollywood were expecting the cities to throw cash at them with one hand and strangle the rights of their citizens with the other.

That's actually a pretty big discussion in certain circles. A lot of people see public resignation like that as undermining the office and the institutions. I think civilian control of the military means more to the military than it does to the civilians.

Regarding the comments earlier about the military leadership:

I've long thought that the Army should require all field grade officers to have a break in service. Get out, find work in the private sector for about five years, and then come back in. The reasons are that 1) the best officers I've met were those who knew that they had options other than the military, so they weren't afraid to speak their mind, and b) it would week out a lot of guys who are simply hanging on until retirement.

The basics of modeling complex systems (i.e. "reality") is that you start by attempting to derive the most significant factors in your system. For instance, if you're doing weather, you start with "if the sun is shining brightly, you are typically seeing no rain." Then you start adding in things to explain exceptions -- e.g. "If the you can clearly see the sun or the stars, you are typically seeing no rain."

Then you add additional parameters to your model for every variation that comes along, until you reach a crisis point where a large percentage of your parameters exist mainly to counteract a flaw in your initial conception (e.g. "the sun revolves around the earth") when you rejigger the initial premise and start over with the additional parameter thing.

The point is, though -- if you go through this process, then each iteration has merit, each parameter adds value. You can go from 50% confidence with 3 variables to 90% confidence with 5, and 99% with 7 -- and it's easy to recognize scientific revolutions because they'll have 98% accuracy with 4 variables when you previously needed 7 variables to get 99% accuracy.

I'm generalizing a bit to where you can know the rules (what it's doing [momentum]) or know the status (what it is [position]). Black holes don't have centers in realspace, they have singularities. The actual center is in a pocket of spacetime that's a one-way trip.

Remember when the current administration was being hammered with the bad unemployment numbers, and Obama offered the "solution" that companies should just hire more workers?

That's a simple solution, but it also demonstrates a lack of investigation and analysis into *why* the problem exists. It completely ignored, for instance, the fact that the big jump in unemployment numbers back in 2009 was due to a lot of companies just dying and dumping their former employees onto the unemployment rolls. In fact, it's why the current unemployment numbers remain so stubbornly high: because we're still seeing businesses closing their doors, with few new companies opening to offer new opportunities for the unemployed.

Had this administration seen that one reality, they might have had a different, more meaningful answer than "companies need to hire more people." Like, for instance, reducing tax burdens for all companies, making business start-ups less painful, or simply reducing the amount of oversight the government currently engages in in regards to businesses.

A brave man you are, but you have come full circle. If I read your assertion correctly you put forth that one could truly understand reality, but probably could not fully understand reality. Now you have embraced black holes as an actual feature of reality. So, if we are to truly understand reality are we not going to have to send an investigative team into a black hole? Or, closer to home, shouldn't we send a team to the center of the sun?

Come to think of it, maybe you are on to something here. The center-of-the-sun team will be led by Pelosi/Reid and they will need a lot of people along with them -- maybe even 52% of some number that is escaping me at the moment.

One way to look at it is to see if policies being advocated are in the interest of Russia or the United States. It is in the interest of the United States to develop energy resources, to encourage new technologies like fracking, to use existing energy resources like coal, to improve the design of nuclear power plants and build more of them and to drill for oil in offshore waters. It is in the interest of Russia that the US do none of these things.

Does that mean that anybody who, for example opposes offshore drilling is a paid agent of Russia? Not necessarily but they are doing things that a paid Russian agent would do.
