Razor sales are falling and P&G blames hipsters. And the Chinese.

Procter & Gamble (PG), which rules the category with Mach-3-maker Gillette, said its razor sales are falling in developed markets. This followed yesterday's announcement by Energizer (ENR) that unit sales of its Schick men's razors have dropped 10 percent in the past year-a literal decimation.

Energizer blames the sales slide on aggressive promotions, specifically P&G's. Meanwhile, P&G focused on its gains abroad and glossed over its losses in major markets. Euromonitor points to another culprit: "the vogue for stubble" and a "growing acceptance of the unshaven look in the workplace." In other words: hairy dudes. And this is one market where China may not save the day; Euromonitor claims Chinese men are relatively "nonhairy."

But Stephen Green points out it's also the sheer cost of cartridges.

I'll tell you what's really killing them, and that's $4 razor cartridges. If you're a kid in your 20s, stuck living at home because of Obamanomics, you'll save money wherever you can - and there's a good chance your boss at your McJob doesn't care if you have stubble or not. The worst part for manufacturers is, how they gonna get those kids back on the cartridge farm, once they've seen hairy Par-ee?

I haven't shaved with a disposable in years, and it was the price (and the promise of a better shave) that chased me away. I used to go through two Fusion cartridges each and every week, for a total annual bill of almost $420 on blades alone. But if you're willing to take a few extra minutes in the morning, and a few weeks to learn a new skill, you can save a bundle by switching to old-school double edge safety razors.

And that there's a cheaper way:

...I love Merkur's Futur razor and can't recommend it highly enough. It's adjustable, so you teach yourself to shave on the safest setting, and dial it up as you get better at it. After about a year, I got mine dialed up to 5 - it goes up to 6. The 5 setting provides such a close, fast shave, that 6 frankly scares me. Maybe 6 is what you use if you ever find yourself trapped in the jungle without a machete.

Anyway, buying the best of the best products was about $200 up front to get in, then annual expenses of about $100 or so a year. You could easily spend just half of that, if you really wanted to save the money.

Swayed by the same logic about 5 years ago I bought a Merkur razor and razor accessories and switched over. But sadly my experience wasn't as happy as Stephen's: even after a few months no matter how careful I was I still was getting nicks and cuts if I went any faster than glacial.

It was a nicer shave but I finally decided that my time, convenience, and still relatively unscarred face was worth the extra money for Mach 3 cartridges which just worked. So as awesome as old-school safety razors can be there's also a reason that the disposable razor cartridges still remain popular.

Oh and any one want to buy a pre-owned Merkur razor with low miles on it?

If You Use Private Transportation, You're a Bad Person

At least according to Allison Bendikt's logic.

Allow me to make a modest proposal: If you live in a city with a public transit system and you use private companies like Yellow Cabs or Uber to get around town, you're a bad person.
Not bad like rapist bad. But bad like ruining-one-of-our-nation's-most-essential-institutions-in-order-to-get-what's-best-for-yourself bad. So, you know, pretty bad.
...There are a lot of reasons why bad people use private transportation. Yes, some do it because they can't be bothered to learn the rail and bus lines. But many go because they have to get somewhere in a hurry or can't wait 20 minutes for a train to come. Some have personal issues like claustrophobia. But those compelling reasons are exactly why we should all opt-in, not out, for some reason.

We all must sacrifice to make state-run enterprises better. And if you don't, you're bad.

Good News: Americans Are Breeding Again

The sharp decline in the country's fertility rate during the economic downturn has come to an end, federal data show, as an improving economy encouraged Americans to resume having babies.

The number of babies born in the United States in 2012 remained flat, the first time in five years that the number did not significantly decline, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

The leveling off capped a 9 percent decline in the fertility rate from 2007 to 2011, a drop that demographers say began after the recession took hold and Americans started feeling less secure about their economic circumstances.

But even with this recovery American women are still only having 1.9 babies on average over their lifetimes which means we still have to rely on immigration to make up the difference. But that still makes us the horny tribbles of the developed world.

Filmed Police Are Polite Police

Earlier this year, a 12-month study by Cambridge University researchers revealed that when the city of Rialto, California, required its cops to wear cameras, the number of complaints filed against officers fell by 88 percentand the use of force by officers dropped by almost 60 percent. Watched cops are polite cops.

And as Jonathon Last points out filming may also have a politening effect on citizens being filmed as well. Having watched decades of Cops episodes I think having all cops wearing cameras full time would be good overall for the police. It would discourage the abusive cops and protect the honest ones.

Plus it's always nice to be able to show investigators and the press that an 'unprovoked' pepper spraying was preceded by 10 minutes of non-cooperation and general jackassery.

Would It Be Wrong to Cure Down's Syndrome?

Well the authoress of this post says yes:

Yeah, I'm more of an "everything happens for a reason - and sometimes the reason is you're stupid and make bad decisions" kind of person, and not curing your kid of a debilitating genetic defect if you can is one of those bad decisions.

I find the Futur clumsy and over-weight. The Merkur standard DE Safety razor gives me my best shave. And you really need to test a bunch of blades before you get the right one for you. Derbys do it for me, though sometimes I find they need to be run across a wine cork before shaving. If you were using Merkur or Feather blades, it is no wonder you kept cutting yourself. I think they're made for gents with lighter whiskers than mine, and the Feathers are notorious for inflicting cuts.

Long story short, try again with different blades and it may begin to work for you after all.

34 I don't know about double edged razors they look like they would cut a lot. Disposables are cheap. It's the stupid 5 edge, vibrating, aloe treated, pivot (with drop back) razors that are stupid expensive. Women have them too but I've never bought them.

Nah, Bro. Dorco razors. Get the same shave as a Gillette or Schick for one third the cost. Dollar Shave Club razors are Dorcos, so it's actually cheaper to buy them directly from the manufacturer than even DSC.

37 GGE, I used to run some. Did a few 5ks, an 8k, et cetera. But I just didn't enjoy it and I continually hyperextended my knee. I chose to switch to Bikram yoga. 1200 calorie burn in 90 minutes, no impact, no messed up knee.

Make public transportation options that aren't a pain. I tried to use the metro when I lived in McClean, VA, but it was a pain just trying to get a parking spot in the parking lot on order to catch it. The only time it worked was when I used it from my boyfriend's apartment in Cleveland Park.

51 How can someone go through 2 cartridges per week? I get a month from mine and I could probably shave twice a day when going out at night. No shaving cream, and shave in the shower under the water stream. The more blades in the cartridge means the longer they will keep the edge. Lower cost with the multi blade style razors in the long run if you use them until they are really used up.

55 Peaches, I use Dave's razor. He doesn't complain. I recently bought myself a new girly one, a Hydro-Silk. I preferred the Mach II. Dave recently signed up for the Dollar Shave Club. He likes them fine. Their commercials are awesome, he says.

57 Oh, you can cut yourself with a Mach 3. I used them exclusively since the late 1990s to shave my head -- they really are the best for that purpose by a long shot -- and every now and then I will nick myself behind my ears.

I just recently switched to the Dorcos, and I don't know if it's just getting used to a new razor or what, but I still prefer the Mach 3 slightly. Just not enough to justify the extra cost.

I'm trying to get back into running after not doing much of it for the last year and a half. I'm sticking to two miles at an easy pace for the moment.

I've found that I'm fine shaving with a single blade disposable razor. The key seems to be more about technique than what razor you use.

Oh, well, he has to shave his face and head, so he can use the luxury ones. I find the dollar shave ones perfectly fine for legs and nether regions. After years of waxing, I barely need to shave, thank goodness.

76 If you fully hydrate your beard before shaving - this takes three minutes with warm water, longer with cold - you can use the same blade for a very long time. Unhydrated beard hairs are about as hard as copper wire. Most men don't wait long enough, and the partially hydrated hairs wear the edge off the razor blade pretty fast. I use a disposable Fusion razor for a minimum of a month. I shave in the shower because otherwise waiting three minutes before proceeding just feels like forever and like most people I can't bring myself to do it very often.

Apparently, based on the security camera, the guy had gotten aboard during the morning shift, and expired in his seat soon thereafter, and _no one gave a crap_. He rode around dead for the entire rest of the day. Gray, stiff, and starting to smell. The driver had to have noticed the corpse, but couldn't be bothered to do anything about it. Someone else's problem, and talk to the union steward if you don't like that response.

Given the size of the roaches on MUNI, I'm amazed they hadn't half consumed the poor decedent by the time he was discovered. Shudder.

The designs are constantly being re-invented (note: not improved) so that manufacturers can continue to treat them as proprietary products and charge premium prices. People go along because, as a result of years of conditioning, they have come to conflate "new" with "improved".

I use something called the Gillette Good News razor, which is just the current name for the same 2 bladed razor that I have been using since I switched to disposable about 25 years ago. 12 cost me about $6, and the supply lasts about six months (home office, so I only need to shave a few times a week). Two blades, no aloe strip (which just gunks up the razor anyway). I'm sure I could get them for even less, if I was patient and/or attentive and waited for a sale or a coupon.

When I started shaving I decided there would be no sissy razor for me. I decided to shave with a good ole straight razor like my grandpa did.

It's actually not that hard. You just want to make sure the damn thing is sharp. A dull straight razor will cut you to pieces.

139 Just bought a new electric shaver this past week. I had (and still do) an excellent Braun razor but several years ago the foil broke and a replacement cost almost as much as the razor itself. Bought shaver for $40 ten years ago but the replacement foil was $29 so, on principal, I just couldn't bring myself to pay that. I had some disposables laying around at that time so I just started using them again and did so for years. Last week the local Wal Mart had new Remingtons on sale for $25 so I picked one up. Results? Verses a razor it is safer and quicker. Ultimately cheaper too. I could spend $10-20 a month on decent disposables. However, the Remington doesn't cut as smooth or as close as a razor or the old Braun so there is that. Overall, good with it.

I found out the hard way that the single edge blades at Home Depot work, but the square corners leave long nicks, scratch marks. It took about 3 days for the scratches to heal and the scaps to come off, leaving only faint red traces for another day or so. Some cheap solutions really are to be avoided.

I shave in the shower, the last thing I do before I get out. I use a Fusion razor, go through one cartridge per month. I spend about $36 a year on cartridges. That's okay for me.

It's traditional for bicyclists to shave their legs and arms. I didn't, for years, but then I read an article that pointed out that bicyclists who shave do better in a wipeout... if you get "road rash" with shaved skin, you tend to slide across the pavement better than if you have hairs snagging on the pavement and ripping out little chunks of skin as you slide. That grisly mental image was enough to get me to try shaving my arms and legs. It's not that big a deal, I do it about once a week.

And I seem to be sensitive to chemicals these days, and anti-perspirants make me itch bad. So I switched to "Tom's of Maine" brand, which just doesn't work as well. Despite using the Tom's every day I got stinky toward the end of a long warm day. So, now that I was shaving arms and legs I said "what the heck" and started shaving under my arms as well. It worked. It made a huge difference. Now I don't mind the Tom's so much. (I now believe that the reason why men supposedly stink after excercise while women supposedly only glow, is that women shave under their arms and most men don't.)

So I'm using one Fusion a month, and it is shaving my face, arms, legs, and underarms. I was real surprised when VodkaPundit claimed to need two cartridges per week, but I reckon he wasn't shaving in the shower.

I used one for several years, but eventually the novelty wore off. I just thought it was cool for awhile. I'm sure you can still buy the things, but last time I got one all they had were the newer style holders with replaceable blades.

There was just something about the old straight razor and strop with the little magnifying mirror that made me feel like I was reliving a part of the past.

Main campus and the Math Department have no sympathy for our concerns about the nearly-impossible-to-use textbook that promotes collectivism. Main campus representative was defensive and disinterested in our preferences. We were told the group work approach was necessary because employers have indicated that today's workforce members don't know how to work cooperatively. I suspect this is because they've worked in groups so much that they are unacquainted with the concept of individual accountability. But what do I know?

IMHO, if you want a good push mower, find a Clemson E-16 Junior. They haven't been made for close to 60 years, but they were the Rolls Royce of push lawnmowers. Side plates of cast magnesium, thick stiff steel tube across the front, making for a stiff structure to maintain the crucial reel-to-bedknife clearance. If you ever see a Clemson mower at a garage sale, just snag it.

Can you just teach around the textbook? Meaning, cover the same topics in the same sequence, but don't refer to the text, or only a little. Maybe even tell your students that the recommended text sucks donkey dick, and not to buy it individually, but maybe groups of two or three share it? That should warm the cockles of the little Marxist's hearts.

They're decent. I never bothered with the basic version and went right for the middle tier razors. I would say they are about comparable to a Mach 3. 311 I rotate through 3 different razors. The 2 blade sensor, the 3 blade mach 3, and the 5 blade fusion. I don't know why, it just seems the face gets used to a razor after awhile and then it just don't shave as close, even with a new razor. Thats when I just move on to the next.

318 I use a Fusion and a cartridge lasts about a few weeks. I buy the monster cartridge package from Costco and I am good for the year. Shave in the shower, use liquid soap (Irish Spring works really well for some reason), just a small amount. The shave just glides and is over quick.

That's similar to what I did in the Army. I would get shaving bumps, but discovered that aftershave took care of it. The AAFES knock-off of some cheap green stuff seemed to have the highest alcohol content.

342 312 I rotate through 3 different razors. The 2 blade sensor, the 3 blade mach 3, and the 5 blade fusion. I don't know why, it just seems the face gets used to a razor after awhile and then it just don't shave as close, even with a new razor. Thats when I just move on to the next.

343 Bic Metal single blades, disposables. You can get them by the case online cheap. They clean out easy under the tap, and I swish them around in an old jam jar half full of rubbing alcohol displacing the water slowing oxidation (I think). They last weeks. But I'm a cheap bastard. I also use shaving soap stick, also online by the case. They last forever - I'm still on my first case after three years. Wet your scruff, rub the stick around, then use your shaving brush to build a lather right on your face. Again - cheap, I save my cash for better booze (and custom knives).

Come first class, tell the students, they have to vote on a choice for the class, and explain the pros and cons of each book. 406 what i did for a while and it seemed to work was using cheap ass disposable razors and shaving in the morning and at night, never letting my not-very-thick beard grow long enough to be a threat to the cheap blades. if you're a five o'clock shadow kind of guy, maybe shave in the morning, at lunch, and in the evening. or just kind of drag a razor across your face all day.

Gillette seems to do that. My first non electric was a Mach 3 that was sent around the time I was graduating high school. I wouldn't be shocked if they buy like the mailing lists of magazines or something at various times. Check for all male names. See if they've sent you something before and if not go "here try out our products for free". It's probably a very profitable method for them.

Today, this "group project" nonsense has been pressured on down to the high school and middle school level. Where it teaches the same lesson.

It has also been forced into the posteducational professional workplace, where it is predictably corrosive to morale.

I found a friend horribly depressed about having been assigned a joint project with someone whom he referred to as his "plutonium" colleague. This term was new to me. When I asked, the response was "Plutonium. Pu. Or PU. Politically Unfireable."

Basically a completely inept and lazy person whom the zampolits of human resources had decreed must be kept on, regardless of output, in order to stay compliant with various diversity metrics.

Anyway, the other meaning of a "plutonium" co-worker is apparently that anything this person touches is guaranteed to blow up destructively. Hence my friend's existential despair. Either he did all of the work personally, or he personally took all the blame for failure. Not a happy situation.

Our godkids do Waldorf, and we did some research before unfreaking out....they're not the school described in "Auntie Mame" and they can't possibly be as bad as public schools -- and Ledeen sends his kids there. So, what do you hate about people from Waldorf schools?

I'm not sure that Putin would be comfortable at all with that. To the extent that Christianity (or any religion for that matter) is tolerated in modern Russia it is in the form of the Russian Orthodox Church which, I don't think can be argued, has been thouroughy brought to heel by Moscow over the past century.

We've been on the flakiness issue since day 1 -- but we thought it was more from being the kid than Waldorf. I suspect that it may be a self-selection issue -- Waldorf kids are more likely to be flakes because flaky kids are more likely to be placed into Waldorf by their flaky parents.....as opposed to non-flaky kids becoming flaky through the Waldorf process.

There did seem to be a bit of cocooning in what was being taught. On the other hand, there was a lot of openness toward other viewpoints in what could be experienced, so I'm not sure if the "only know what you're passionate about" is localized to a few schools or endemic to the Waldorf experience.

I'll cut to the chase, though -- the "special snowflake" thing is real, it's big, it's bad, and it's ugly. Waldorf educates kids pretty well -- especially compared to public schools -- but they carry a chip on their shoulder forever after.

I take a shower, steam the bathroom up, wash my hair, turn the shower tap off, put a hot rag to my face, "shave my moustache" apply various cremes to my face, draw a bath and do what gardening needs be done EVERY DAY. That looks even worse when it grows out enough to wax again & it is itchy! I had to spend a week with a red upper-lip and my co-workers, in a book store, commenting on my "stubble" every day for 2 months after before I decided not to wax EVER again. (My "stubble wasn't "long enough" to wax. Eeew!) Just went home and "shaved it". I am a goddamned Hobbit! Since I was 19, I need to SHAVE my legs (calves, especially) w/in 9 hrs to be perfectly smooove with a 2 track razor and some Barbasol.

I'd find something good and reasonably priced and then they'd discontinue it or cheapen the quality. My face demands a decent blade. I use the quad blade offering from DSC, it costs $6 per month, postage paid. The shave is smooth and close, and 4 blades is more than enough for me for the month. In fact, I no longer come close to the ragged edge shaves I used to milk out of the expensive blades. These blades are still good when I swap out for a new one, but my face deserves the best!

523 I use a Gillette safety razor and Old Spice shaving mug that I bought in the early seventies. I am on my third badger hair shaving brush. (Lost one during a move.) I've tried other systems, but this really is the best. Most of the others are just marketing gimmicks.

524 Wanna make your disposable blade last longer? Razor blades become dull not from use but from moisture. Dry off your disposable razor after every use and it will last a long, long time. When I dry off my razors after use, one cheapo disposable will stay sharp for usually three or four months.

525 $200 for a safety razor. PT Barnum was right. And who uses two disposable cartridges a week. I shave every day and I get a month out of a cartridge. Stupid

I don't shave so much as trim up a bit. All my i.d.'s picture a beard of some sort. I need a haircut only 4 months or so. That radiation/chemo therapy really does the trick on hair. Gets rid of cancer in most cases, too.

527 But but but...? Double-edge safety razors have leapt in price and dropped in quality, even the vaunted "Feather" brand. Dropped my darn Merkur in the shower and the doggone head snapped off. Went back to the cheapest Kroeger dispo twin blades, and they last a week each minimum. Of course keeping them overnight in that tin-foil pyramid hat helps, too.

529 I use a $50 Jaeger razor and Proraso, Ingram, or Speick cream. Get a badger hair brush and a stand, if you go the safety razor route.

I started with Shark blades--can buy on bulk from Amazon and it works out to .05 a blade. I use Feathers now--sharper but more expensive. My yearly costs are well under $100. I shave twice in the morning, going with the grain. It's still faster than those 4-blade monstrosities. I think, just from anecdotal sources, that Merkur razors have a steeper learning curve. It only took about a week for me to get used to mine. I shave fast, and hardly ever nick myself unless I'm being careless.
