Hahaha. Remember that NY newspaper editor that published gun owner addresses and put them on a map? Well, karma is a beotch. Balloon Defense

So DC is getting some balloons for cruise missile defense. Um, who exactly is going to be launching these cruise missiles? Canada? And is this really a threat right now?

Within a year, a pair of souped-up $2.7 billion blimps (price includes R&D) will be floated 10,000 feet above the District of Columbia and act as a 340-mile-wide eye in the sky, detecting incoming missiles and the like.

Math

Oh man. This student is screwed if he is in a Common Core school district. Evidently a student was using his cell phone in math class so the teacher took it away, put in a pin code which required the student to solve the above problem in order to unlock his phone. Teaching the importance of math to students.

Fanboy Movie

Not too shabby. Wolverine vs Predator.

Shark Week

Well, it has been Shark Week this week on the Discovery Channel. In light of this, take the Shark Personality Quiz and see what kind of shark you are.

Don't Be This Guy

This reporter isn't too smart. How I aided and abetted my own debt card fraud.

Hunger Strike For Tatas

Topless activist on jail hunger strike. Kinda silly for a 16 day jail stay instead of just paying the $816 fine.

Instead of paying the $816 in fines with money, Pappas said Feeley could instead pay with jail time, at a rate of $50 a day. But the math is fuzzy: it costs taxpayers $179 a day to house an inmate at the jail, Sheriff Shaun Golden has said.

Court administrator Kathryn Garrecht said the judge was not calculating how much it costs to keep her in the jail.

"The $50 (a day) is going toward the fines she owes," Garrecht said. "He's just trying to wipe out the fines for her."

Damn. $179 a day per prisoner?

Priorities

So you are sailing in your yacht with your spouse and a dog and you hit a reef and have to swim to shore. Who do you rescue first? Here's what one bloke did.

What's up morons?

Last night, there was talk about books for the burning times, tmi3rd (I think) recommended an EMT textbook.  There are a couple out there, the one I remember using for my EMT training in college was known as the Brady book, I believe that was the publisher's name--not sure if it's the same textbook that was mentioned last night or not.  It's probably undergone a few revisions since then.  An EMT's skill set is realistically glorified first aid, but that is enough to get you through most non-mortal injuries when you get to it.

Dirty little secret--most of modern medicine is waiting for the body to fix the problem itself.  Other than antibiotics to kill infections, or surgery to correct life-threatening anatomic problems, almost everything else is just a way to buy time for the body to take care of the problem.  Setting broken bones and draining abscesses without painkillers would suck for the patient, but your long-term outlook is the same.

27 So, apparently I'm a Great White. You are curious yet cautious, aggressive but also recessive, and when in doubt, you always follow protocol. You have a unique and fascinating personality and people are dangerously intrigued by you. Fun Fact! Great Whites generally will not fight with one another for food. Instead, they will have “tail-slap” competitions until one gives up. The loser must continue his/her hunt elsewhere. Hmm. good to know that last bit of info. Next time Ergie comes along and starts stirring up shit, I'll tail slap him around until he leaves.

59 The Manichean Meta-Narrative It is so important for the culture, from memes to mores, to be reflective of that civic heritage that given us both virtue and liberty. The Progressive left, however, have been fighting this, and with some success, not by staking a logical and realistic case for their position (for they have none), but by demonizing their opponents as evil incarnate and then offering a manichean choice: The evil H8ers and oppressors, or the ones who are opposed to all those naughty things. My grandfather always used to say that there are only two types of medicines.....one makes you feel better, so you don't screw off (slacking) while the body gets better by itself; the other makes you feel worse, so you don't screw off (overdoing) while the body gets better by itself.....

83 Books for the End Of Civilization As We Know It... I have the canning book by Ball, but then you need jars and lids, and gardening skills. So you would need gardening books, but what you really need is a book on smoke curing meat and fish, and tanning hides.

I saw one guys recommendation for a Machinist's Handbook, but that would require some degree of civilization. I would want something on colonial blacksmithing and metal working. Making charcoal isn't that difficult if you've done it once but to make black powder you need a source of sulfur and potassium nitrate.

..and you would want something on bronze age, or early iron age weapons and tactics. Something on animal husbandry for draft animals, sheep, goats, and dairy cattle would be useful. It's really a long list if you think about all the thinks we have forgotten how to do; things we expect to be done for us and available for trade. So you have to ask, what do you have to trade beyond labor?

I saw one guys recommendation for a Machinist's Handbook, but that would require some degree of civilization. I would want something on colonial blacksmithing and metal working. Making charcoal isn't that difficult if you've done it once but to make black powder you need a source of sulfur and potassium nitrate.

There are a couple of books on simple machines, the basic calculations and the like.  Useful when combined with basic blacksmithing to building things that a small community needs.

The reality is that burning is not going to be a zombie apocalypse where civilization is reduced to ruins.  Instead it'll likely be a breakup of the US into regional powers and city-states (LA, NYC, Seattle, Dallas, Chicago, etc).

I think the confusion comes from the statement that the dealer raises the prices on both vehicles.  It doesn't say the dealer raises the prices on both vehicles the same amount to meet the 10% requirement and not lose money.  So, in a way you can claim it is unsolvable because the question is vague.

191 Common Core is a good program, but it will fail because not enough teachers are good enough to make it work. This will lead to unions clamoring for more money for professional development, much of which will get skimmed or pissed away. Students will fall farther behind, and it will be blamed on "structural" factors, like racism, etc. The pendulum will swing back to emphasis on concrete content, and the cycle will repeat.

Last year, one of my husband's real estate clients didn't have room for her trampoline at her new house and said we could have it. Wheeee! It was fun and provided fitness benefits. Then she found a nearby neighbor who was willing to keep the tramp at her house and asked for it back.. Sad. While checking Craigslist for a rebounder for my mother, I ran across several interesting trampolines and decided to go ahead and get my very own. Y'all can come over and jump on it anytime!

232 "Um, who exactly is going to be launching these cruise missiles?" 1. Take 1 used oil tanker ... probably not a surplus supertanker, as it would be noticed. 2. Float it to an innocuous 3rd-world port, for "refitting" 3. Refit, and install 4 or more Iranian IRBMS ... with "suitable" warheads. 4. Fill up with a load of Saudi/ Gulf crude 5. Make a delivery to Europe ... but swing wide to the west. maybe float to a few hundred miles off the US coast. The blimps, at 10,000', would give us much earlier notice and better targeting data than a satellite or the installed radar.

Posted by: Arbalest at August 09, 2013 06:58 PM (FlRtG)

233 Anyone who thinks those blimps are for cruise missile defense, isn't paying attention.

Oh, yeah, they can be USED for that purpose, but the actual need is for widespread 24/7 live feed camera coverage.

Combined with DC cops scanning licenses, they can (and will) do amazing things in the realm of local law enforcement and traffic control.

Just ponder the possibilities of what an evil genius would do with such a system and you'll be on the right track.

And it's not to make the city streets any safer for the little people.

256 A few days later, a piece of malware was loaded onto all sites hosted by Freedom Hosting. The malicious software was designed to gather and send identifying information to an IP address in Reston, Virginia. It exploited a critical memory management hole found in many dated versions of Firefox.

According to reverse-engineer Vlad Tsrklevich and a number of others, either the FBI or some other law enforcement agency is responsible for the malware in an attempt to identify those using the network. Using the network itself isn't illegal as it is used by some human rights groups and even journalists wishing to remain anonymous but those using it to distribute and collect child abuse material could be in trouble. The FBI press office declined to comment when asked about their involvement with the malware.

270 My favorite is the surfer who eats lobster while hanging out at the beach.

No problem if he caught it himself while surfing.

Here's how I would solve this food stamp abuse.  The whole program is designed to act as a supplement to someone's regular groceries, not the main source of food.  Instead of allowing the EBT cards to be used at stores where they can abuse them, have them only work at "Food Stamp Stores".

Everything in a FSS would be staples:  milk, bread, eggs, cereal, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc.  No bullshit luxury stuff like lobsters, soda, Twinkies, ice cream.  None of that is considered food staples so they've no reason to be looking for it.  If they want any of that stuff, they go to a regular grocery store.

But then people will say, "That's too mean and humiliating to send them to a Food Stamp Store to buy food!"

TOO FUCKING BAD!!!!  You take the EBT card, you take the deal.

272 Strangely enough, I've never heard of how many Japanese were spared by the bombs being dropped and the subsequent unconditional surrender (well a few conditions such as retention of the Emperor).

I can easily imagine that after significant losses due to  infiltration and kamikaze style attacks that the Allied Forces would've begun to kill on sight anything that moved. (it happpened a few times in the sweep across the pacific.)

Thus the Japanese population might have been reduced by as much as 50%. Perhaps more as commanders implemented methods of attack that was more sparing of ground soldiers.

In fact, I believe that this was one of the arguments finally made for surrender that got through to Hirohito as he didn't wish to be the Emperor who brought that on to his people. And at the time they didn't know we'd blown our wad on nukes and fully believed we might have many more.

national enquirer doing some actual reporting about one of the JEFs and Moochs buddies.  fer realz

The Chicago Tribune reported that Dr. Eric Whitaker, a close friend of Barack Obama, admitted cooperating with federal authorities who are sifting through a $433,000 kickback scheme at the state public health agency Whitaker once led in Illinois.

But Whittaker claims non-involvement in the alleged crimes

Following the indictment of Quinshaunta R. Golden, his chief of staff at Department of Public Health, who is accused of conspiring to divert federal money into her own pocket and then cover it up, Whitaker released a statement.

"I had no firsthand knowledge of the activities outlined in this indictment and was not involved in any way,"

283 Windows 7 "God Mode" simply provides users with a centralized Control Panel for all of Windows' settings, from changing your desktop background to setting up a VPN or partitioning your hard drive. In all, there are nearly 50 categories and most have several entries.

It's almost comical how simple it is to access it:

Create a new folder. Anywhere is fine, I created one on my desktop.

Rename the folder to: God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} *Note: The "God Mode" chunk can be called anything you want.

The default folder icon will change to a Control Panel icon, and you can open it to view all of the settings.

You're forgetting the realities of the situation.

Who's going to build, stock, operate those stores?

At what cost to the taxpayer? With what result in the end?

I live in a state where only the state can sell liquor. The state run stores are expensive to run. (Government workers doncha know and government efficiency).

Plus many stories you hear about abuse are false or blown out of proportion.

It would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face and nothing good would come of it. Not even your self satisfaction at people being shamed or inconvenienced.

297 272 EC Years ago when I was in college and worked in grocery, I saw lots of the old fashioned paper food stamps. My estimation was that 80 percent of the users had no idea how to shop and wound up running out of stamps before the end of the month. Very few users were smart shoppers, but they could stretch their monthly stamps by a mile. What really chapped me though, was using the food stamps for food but paying for liquor, smokes, dog food, and the like with a C-note. Government aid is fungible. I wasn't buying them food; I was buying them Marlboro Lights and whiskey.

Since a lot of games have developer's modes, it's no wonder that they exist for the operating system.

I wonder if they're available for other os's also and how to find them.

I always suspected that MS put in back door code that they could use for their particular products that weren't easily usable for other vendors of software. (and I think they got sued over that).

It's so obvious a step to take that I'm guessing many other vendors and software is so equipped.

Adding surveillance snippets would be trivial.

[mostly because they fit my feet really well.] Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo cocksuckers indeed! no "high end" shoe maker should make shoes you are unable to repair, it defeats much of the reason to buy shoes from them. I have had a hate, really hate relationship with them for years. I have some shoes from them I keep getting repaired but I am generally displeased with the quality of their shoes. their penny loafers are barely worth repairing anymore.

Favorite moment (not the best scene in the vid, but poignant) is when Packy casually zaps the jihadist moaning on the floor. It's very well animated; if the protagonists were not rabbits, you'd swear it was live-action.

I just spent three weeks there, but because of the flooding I couldn't get to Canmore, let alone Lake Louise or Banff - where we had a week booked. I canned saskatoons and made jam at mom's instead.

Corporate welfare FTW!

And if those missiles are successfully "detected" by the blimps, what will then happen is... precisely fuck-all. Because there is no well developed defense system for cruise missiles in D.C., or anywhere else.

To say nothing of ballistic missiles.

If the country had stayed on the course which Reagan set for it, there would be reasonably sound defenses in place by now against both cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. Where reasonably sound is defined as a 98% plus chance of an inflight interception and kill before warhead detonation.

The country went off that course. And now the only "defense" there is against missile attack is a laughably thin prototype layer for ballistic missiles that probably has about a 20% chance of intercept. Or less, depending on the vector. Down to 0%.

Cruise missiles? Especially stealth cruise missiles? Fuhgeddaboudid. No chance of stopping them short of the target.

Well, the greentards like to think they are slandering the industry by referring to the "tar sands", but I am pretty sure the first European Explorer (Peter Pond???) to see them dubbed them exactly that. The thick, oxidized oil that oozes out in the banks of the Athabaska River does indeed have the consistency of tar. And tar is a valuable product in its own right.

I never thought I would see a front-end and hood larger than a late-70's, early 80's Monte Carlo, but there you go.  The lead would bring down the mileage, but perhaps the information passed along the radio waves would make up for that.

Rush Limbaugh might generate more MPW(ave) than un-molested gasoline, perhaps?

I'm told that the residents of Sierra Vista, AZ referred to their blimps as Condom I & Condom II for years. One of them crashed in 2011 though and the other one is set to be decommissioned in Sept. even though they got a 6 mo. reprieve earlier this year because they can't figure out which Fed Dept should fund them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Our Mafia" plays checkers, while the Russian Mafia plays chess.

697 The administration is also looking at putting non-profit plans on the same footing as those subsidized by the government for the “for-profit” insurers, Reid noted, but said that it was necessary for patients to “have skin in the game.” The so-called Cadillac plans (like that offered by the Culinary Union) encouraged patients to use too many services because they paid nothing. “The Cadillac plans weren’t fair to other people.” said Reid. The unions had negotiated luxury plans that were not sustainable.

The cost of "winning" was something, however.  Their tactics are part of our current system, though.  Queens are pawns, Knights are rooks and the Bishops are less than Congressmen.

The King moves more than one space and ignores "checks".

...perhaps we are amongst the new Mafia?

Maybe you've seen this, twas new to me...

The kids filed into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship.

Little Sally led off. "I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30" she said proudly, "My sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success."

"Very good", said the teacher.

Little Debbie was next. "I sold magazines" she said, "I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events."

"Very good, Debbie", said the teacher.

Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher's desk. "$2,467", he said.

"$2,467!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?"

Toothbrushes", said Little Johnny. "Toothbrushes", echoed the teacher, "How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?"

"I found the busiest corner in town", said Little Johnny, "I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample." They all said the same thing, "Hey, this tastes like dog poop!" Then I would say, "It is dog poop. Wanna buy a toothbrush? I used the President Obama method of giving you some crap, dressing it up so it looks good, telling you it's free and then making you pay to get the bad taste out of your mouth."

Little Johnny got five stars for his assignment. Bless his heart.

721 After hearing from "Zombie" a couple of times and reading the material, I look forward to another visit like I'd looked forward to "story day" in fourth grade.

I'll pull out a carpet-square, sip my milk and glean the wonders of the converted undercover patriot, as only Zombie can relay them.  He's like Charlotte's Web and James and the Giant Peach all rolled-into-one, (with subversive muckleheads rolled-in.)

As a 1980's Long-Hair, (without a band --I can't tell you how many times I was asked if I was in a band.),  I would have gotten laid more -(once)-, if I'd have told a lie instead of always telling the truth.

I could have easily taken the high-school jargon I had been given, (as well as the bullshit my "teachers" handed to me), and converted that into something I already knew.  The exploitation was not of "the proletariat", as Mr. Duchez spoke of them, but of The American People, as a whole.

Mr. Duchez, (his real name), liked to tell us that we were like the serfs.  We were the share-croppers.  We were peons that found ourselves amongst Corporate Giants, while he gathered a government paycheck and looked forward to a "finish line" that wasn't guaranteed to anyone but Government Employees, lest Unions save the unwashed masses.

Whenever I hear the term "under-served", I think of Mr. Duchez.  Not because he was amongst them, but because he tried to doom our class to his ungrateful, miserable fate.

I wish I could link to his best stories, but I cannot find them amongst my tangle of Bookmarks.  I'm on my seventh beer and this does not bode well for future commentary, let alone engagement.

I'm fairly sure that cthulu is a fan, as well.  He's probably got the information at his fingertips.  I'll cede to anyone with better "un-drunk" that I...lol.

723 ...and confusing Subjects, untied to their predicates is another reason I can never write anything substantial.  By "linking to his best stories," I identified Mr. Duchez, instead of "Zombie", whose stories I admire and links I would expose, should I find them.

I'm seven beers "in".  I'm starting to lose my mind.  I need to bid you all a fond "farewell".

783 I would love to have a Joni Mitchell anthology album but it seems that they don't want that.  They want you to buy a bunch of albums with only 1 or 2 songs on it that are decent.

786 Somebody wanna tell me again how Jack Russells are untrainable? I wish I had a buck for every time I've heard that. Though, admittedly, it's probably easier to teach one to sketeboard like a champ than it is to teach one to sit still and quiet.

If I may,

I was so very taken by Ms. Mitchell back in the 80's. Her music was my "avatar" for my "youth spent with women older than myself"

WAIT!!!

NO REGRETS.......NO REGRETS!!!

I was a most lucky man in my 20's.......most lucky......

No they are not untrainable.  It is easy to teach them how to dig holes all over your yard and the neighbors.

Yeah, it was always that way. You could screw with someone you didn't want to receive calls, say if a third party was trying to tell them something you didn't want them to know.

True this...

I was an "Awe Struck youth at her "Shadows and Light" concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl in 1979......this was a very difficult concert as I felt she was singing to me for the entire show...and I so wanted to meet her and tell her how much her music meant to me.....I was also VERY stoned.....

I cried all the way back to my base at the Navy Regional Medical Center in Oakland........pathetic sorry story.......that was me then.....

808 Since I don't have time to read all 800 entries, I'll reply to a few at the beginning.  People were talking about books for the burning times and a couple of themes kept coming up.  One was making gunpowder and the other was curing meat.  Both of these involve saltpeter.  You can search Amazon for books on saltpeter which will bring up books on both subjects.

There are several books available on Kindle that were written during the Civil War in order to instruct people in the CSA how to do produce basic saltpeter and then how to refine it into the pure stuff suitable for making black powder or preserving meat.  It also makes a pretty good fertilizer if you plan to grow vegetables.  Since they always had adequate supplies of gunpowder, even if they were short on food, I guess the system worked.

There is also this book at Amazon if you are more interested in the history of saltpeter.

"Saltpeter Mother Gunpowder" by David Cressy

As for the people making fun of the blimps put up to defend Washington, those blimps carry radars so they are kind of a stationary AWACS with the crew on the ground which is a much cheaper way to do things.  The $2.7 billion was mainly for research so they could build a whole lot more of them without raising the price significantly, that is if the Ruling Class in the Capitol City thought it was worthwhile to defend people out in the provinces.  If you go to Youtube and search for "pulse jets" you can find a whole lot of video and "how to" instructions on how to make your own.  With the GPS, accelerometer and computer power in a five year old smart phone, you could make yourself a much better guidance system than was available in the most advanced missiles in the 1960s.  The WW II V-1 "Buzz Bomb" had a range of 200 miles and a payload of 2000 pounds.  Let's say a back yard tinkerer puts together one with half the range and half the payload.  Draw a circle with DC in the center and a 100 mile radius.  If our tinkerer's back yard is anywhere in that circle, he can deliver a thousand pounds of explosive to any block in Washington DC.  Or say a rogue nuclear power like North Korea or Iran or some dissident group in the Pakistan military builds a cruise missile with twice the range of a V-2 that can deliver a nuclear warhead.  They can launch it from a ship several hundred miles at sea off the coast.
