Some of y'all have been whining for some Doom! OK, here ya go. The Coming Obamacare Recession. If you're just starting to plan for this now, you're behind the power curve.
Consumer and business spending, which have been rising modestly, will continue to rise if consumers and businesses have confidence in the future. The new year, however, brought with it higher taxes, and not just the increases on income over $400,000 recently won by the Obama forces. Many Obamacare taxes became effective January 1, 2013, including a 0.9% increase in Medicare Taxes and an extra 3.8% tax on investment income, including dividends, interest, capital gains, and rent income, for households earning more than $250,000.The Walking Dead ReturnsSome of the ugly details of Obamacare, the most far-reaching piece of legislation to be passed without a single member of Congress having actually read it—indeed not even having been allowed a serious chance to read it—have only been gaining attention in recent months. Looking forward to 2014, employers are now looking at an additional $63 per insured employee fee to compensate insurance companies for the added costs of covering previously uninsured people with pre-existing conditions. That’s supposed to phase out by 2017, but if you believe that you probably also bought the line that Obama is in favor of a “balanced” approach to deficit reduction.
Finally. Season Three, Part Deaux starts back up for The Walking Dead tomorrow night at 9PM on AMC. I'm stoked to see how this season plays out.
SyFy is also airing Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome tomorrow night at 8PM. It is essentially the webisodes that were aired a few months ago. I didn't finish watching them so it'll be nice to catch it all in one shot. In HD.
Gingerscrimination

Oh man. I'm sure the Ginger Mafia won't be pleased with this news. Quvenzhane Wallis Up For The Role Of Annie?
Hello Kitty

It would seem Hello Kitty is our latest astronaut. Girl Launches Hello Kitty Doll Into Space. Judging by how this little experiment ended, we need to ban Hello Kitty dolls. If it'll save just one tree....
And speaking of space, while we won't quite yet find out about sex in space, we just might finally get a little Boobie Pron In Space.
British celebrity rag The Sun is reporting that next year, the first porn star will blast off into space. She will be riding a private rocket, paying her own $100,000 dollar ticket to low earth orbit and completing her own training for the mission. Will the world finally find out about space sex? According to CoCo Brown, star of Big Booty Bomb 2, the answer is no. But wait, there is still hope, according to the article: "Maybe I'll pop my boob out and take a photo of it with the Earth in the background." The first space porn!

She found my retractable name badge in my purse and came into the kitchen and said "turn around grandma I need to see if you will fit in my weddin" She pulled it out and measured my backside, concluded that I probably would. Turns out she was measured at daycare to be a flower girl in one of the workers "weddins" Funny what kids think.

Graham is just ......acting. He's running for re-election and trying to come up with a campaign winner. He can act all outraged, like he did during the Clinton impeachment. We didn't know better then, be he was acting then to get a promotion from Congressman to Senator.
Remember McCain running for re-election in 2010 in Arizona (where else?) and saying " just build the damn fence!"

Not a fan of slow-cooked chicken. Dries out like an old apple with none of the flavor.
Soak bamboo skewers in water for at least 2 hrs. Soy, mirin, lower part of green onion, and a spoon of sugar -> half into marinade with chix for an hour, and half reserved for basting.
Heat up coals on hibachi or grill.
Pick out chix on to paper towels, skewer with skewers, cook over glowing coals two or three at a time, turning AMPERSAND basting alternately. Don't burn.
Rice, japanese or korean pickled schtuff, chopped green onion, and ice cold beer. #Winning.

"We're trying to do the right thing for Emma," Filippazzo said. "We want Emma to have it all, and we believe by doing it this way, including him in a birthday or Thanksgiving, it'll be a nice addition for her."
"We believe the best interest for Emma is for him to have a role in her life, but not as a parent," she said. "The role is this is mommy's good friend who helped your moms have you because they wanted you so badly."

That time was before the election, during the campaign. When Mitt Romney totally screwed the pooch on it, and as far as Joe and Jane Lowinfovoter are concerned, Benghazi is now something from ancient history where they yawn and change the channel.

I've always maintained that an old PII 333mhz machine was "good enough" for what most people ever needed if it had the right software.
W2K was the last Windows that even made an attempt to be svelte.
I've been dabbling with an old Pentium Pro 200mhz machine recently running NT4 with 128M that has a programming project I fiddle with occasionally.
That PPro with NT4 is about as snappy feeling in the UI as all the modern shit. No eye candy, no animations, just the basics.

They don't want most of it. The local Goodwill store in my area also serve as electronic waste dumping sites because they needed to get rid of the stuff but didn't want to turn people away. So they got set up with companies that ship it all to the third world to extract what little of value is there.
I'm going to have to take some stuff there next week. We're having all of the windows done in the house and I need to make room for the installers to work. Which means I have to free up some space in my storage locker by giving up a lot of old 'just in case' stuff that would once in a while generate some income by being able to read some antique storage format or whatever. It's been long enough that I doubt any more revenue is going to result and the locker rent is always an issue. (I'm trying to convince my packrat mother to get rid of enough stuff so that we can merge into a single locker and save some money.)

we can just hope . we can facilitate a better environment for those not quite 'feeling it right now'
we are a strange and elastic community under enormous pressure right now. i think it might be a little more harsh than it needs to be.
at least, and i speak for myself ,i know i'm sure feeling a harshness. which is why i felt a protectiveness over the nightstalkers as the lighter side of us.

There's another group working on a NT4 clone. That could interesting.
The Linux "community" has a real attitude problem when it comes to usability and making the tech accessible. This is something MS excels at because they can just order someone to do the drudge/scutt work of actual productization, internationalization, special needs, etc, etc.
Years ago I wrote some utilities that would have internationalized all the Linux kernel code to use message include files automatically. There was no interest at all. The utils did all the nasty shit a translated version has to do by hand now. I couldn't gen any interest among the priesthood. None.

I have known some lipstick lesbians who would definitely be termed hot by most other humans. But they often turn out to be 'flexible.' Meaning they decide after a certain point they want a family and find some guy to make one with. They may still have some girlfriends on the side but in two cases I know of will go into complete denial about their past escapades. One of them even claims she was a virgin when she married at 29 because another woman being in past the wrist doesn't count.
OTOH, I've know a fair number of the other variety, that would almost certainly reveal a genetic trait if it weren't too controversial for any researcher to approach with a ten foot Pole or eight foot Hungarian. (I've seen some claims that such women have blood chemistry that would be assumed to come from a man but it doesn't appear to have any mainstream support.) I know one couple who look almost exactly alike except one is about 15% smaller. Almost like a bigger Mini-Me.

I may be mistaken, but back in the day, there were no "computer keyboards" as we know them. Your input to the machine was by way of punched cards, or by way of a Teletype machine, which was originally used to talk to other Teletype machines. And I don't think Teletypes had a caret character.
I used to use a Teletype to enter data into the old Baroid BLS2000 mud logging system. And it would talk back via the same Teletype. Most commands could be executed by typing a 3-digit number.

The "house style" was very hoppy, but not the piney, bitter, astringent, or even cleanly floral hops. More of a fruity, earthy flavor -- without too much "nose". The 120 came across as almost "hop syrup". The DIPA was cleaner, but still heavy. The Palo Santo was almost a stout or a porter, and clung stubbornly to the palate. As the BH remarked (several minutes after imbibing a single drop), "I can still taste it -- but it'd be good over ice cream."
My fourth beer of the night was a double-red from Ninkasi (Eugene, OR), that had the right "bite" to cleanse the palate from the Dogfish Head. I have to confess that my own taste in beer runs more toward the "San Diego style" where the hyper-concentrated hops are almost metallic at first sip, then rapidly bloom to a floral and herbal explosion as the liquid warms, fading quickly away. Nothing too "sticky" or "syrupy".

I just don't see why women would be more likely to be bisexual, or hard wired to accomodate both.
I don't even get that teacher thing, where women teachers are going after 14 year old boys. It just seems that most women are hard wired to be attracted to men, not boys, not both men and women, men. And if they're homosexual, why would they be attracted to a man at all. Don't get it.
Posted by: nerdygirl at February 10, 2013 12:48 AM (bKckD)
You're speaking from theory. In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.
Colorado Alex (much respect) is speaking from observation and inference.
For my part, I suspect women's sexuality is more ... flexible, and less hard-wired. As evidence I would cite who become fixated on inanimate objects (shoes, leather, rubber), which IAFAIK is virtually unknown in women. A homosexual affair in a woman may be a one-off; in a man, it means you're dealing with a fruit.

RWC, I hope this helps:
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge...
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER...

Thanks all. The one regret that i have is not being there when they put her under. I wish i was there for the very last moment.
If it helps, I was there for Bud's last moment, and I'm not sure that makes any difference.
When my father died shortly thereafter, after a long illness, a colleague told me her father had died unexpectedly, and she regrettede never getting to say goodbye to him. I told her I'm not sure whether that's worse or better; she never got to say goodbye, but then she didn't watch him go out by inches, month by month, either.

Pretty good read. He's not at all shy about calling out "homers" he takes umbrage with, especially Democrat moms with their kids in parks.
(.....Me, in mortal fear of becoming homeless myself thanks to Obummer? What ever gave you that idea?)
I didn't realize that, in San Diego, you can't legally sleep anywhere outside, not even in your car. Probably SOP for most cities.
....
This strikes me as being inhumane just for the sake of being inhumane. (And makes me even more scared at the prospect of being homeless. Thought I could at least find a beach or somewhere to crash on. No dice, apparently. So that no one gets the wrong idea, I'm not in any danger right now of that happening....but I'm looking at life without my dad, eventually, and it's scaring the hell out of me. Trying to do all I can to expand my skillset and remain employable, but goddamned if this economy isn't the most frightening thing I've ever been exposed to. Got a wife, too. If I'm made to suffer, I can deal. If I'm made to watch her suffer, and I can't fix it, that'll break me.)
I understand the potential/likely downsides (increased illegal activity, littering, potential public urination/defecation, complaints from neighborhoods with their new outdoor neighbors, etc.), but couldn't cities at least throw the truly imperiled a bone and let them sleep on the damned sidewalk/in parks somewhere after 10:00 pm without being harassed? Or, Jesus Christ, IN THEIR CARS?
I never thought much before of just how subhumanly the homeless are treated (not speaking sanctimoniously; I once didn't even look at a homeless person trying to solicit money in a drive-through when he was obviously signalling to get my attention; I rightfully regret that now). It's really heartbreaking. The author notes that, once you become "one of us," as he calls it, you'll find out who your true friends really are. And you'll find out quickly how it feels, day in, day out, to not be wanted by anyone around you wherever you go.
It breaks my heart that this happens, and it is happening, more and more, to people who truly do want to work and be successful, contributing members of society. Not saying that the "lifers" who are there due to an unwillingness to try and fix it, and/or substance addiction, are any more deserving of this treatment than those just down on their life luck (or victims of a terrible fucking uncaring bastard of a president). But, it's slowly dawning on me that becoming homeless can very well happen to anyone, and to me. And it starts such a destructive cycle and makes you at risk of being ticketed/arrested for everything you do, that it just amazes and humbles me to hear of those who have hit rock bottom....and have climbed back out.
I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts about homelessness in general, as well as on policies of public sleeping. Fair/unfair? More we can do here? (NOT from government, from good ol' private sector freedom.)
This stuff's in my head now, and I'm trying to come to terms with my fear.
(Combine this discussion with a public school system that utterly fails kids, and makes them all but bound to become homeless.....Damn, we're pretty fucked up in this society in several respects, aren't we? Skeletons in our closet abound, with devastating human tolls.)

Finally got around to reading a pdf of Quigley's Tragedy & Hope and came across something that reminded me of Ace, so I'm dumping a paragraph here; hope you don't mind:
From the broadest point of view, the aggressors of 1931-1941 were attacking the whole nineteenth century way of life and some of the most fundamental attributes of Western Civilization itself. They were in rev olt against democracy, against the parliamentary system, against laissez faire and the liberal outlook, against nationalism (although in the name of nationalism), against humanitarianism, against science, and against all respect for human dignity and human decency. It was an attempt to brutalize men into a mass of unthinking atoms whose reactions could be controlled by methods of mass communication and directed to increase the profits and power of an alliance of militarists, heavy-industrialists, landlords, and psychopathic political organizers recruitedfrom the dregs of s ociety. That the society which they came to control could have created such dregs, men who were totally untouched by the traditions of Western Civilization and who were restrained by no social relationships at all, and that it could have allowed the militarists and industrialists to use these dregs as an instrument for seizing control of the state raise profound doubts about the nature of that society and about its real allegiance to the traditions to which it paid lip service.

1) Most parents don't realize how bad the schools are in some parts of the country. If you're middle class, then the schools probably aren't so bad that you've started to worry.
2) It inevitably becomes, "Oh, I don't like the teachers unions, but our child's teacher is wonderful" and then you get nowhere because they don't want to upset Mrs. Winterbottom who little Johnny just adores.
And 3), in my case, I didn't want to infuriate Mrs. Guevara by butting heads with Comrade Teacher (who sported a life-size cutout of Ear Leader, with whom she shared a melanin concentration), thereby raising a major philosophical conflict within me: I wanted to fight this bullshit, but I wasn't at risk, while my son was.

I remember my high school years, and honestly, we kids screwed the pooch. We provided a lot of peer pressure against any kid that actively participated in anything the teacher was trying to accomplish.
About the same time, it was becoming impossible for the school system to discipline kids, and took jacks or better to throw kids who screwed it up for everyone out of the school.
Then, they started looking for every other way to make the teacher's job impossible -- stuff like "mainstreaming" handicapped kids.
Yes, there are bad teachers. Still, we don't need to make the good teachers drag around all this other shit. We are not just screwing this up in a couple of ways -- we are screwing this up in just about every possible way.

You take their sense of "fairness" out of the equation and a lot of stuff would clear up really quickly.
Being my age means you grew up with a number of notions pounded into your head by the adults in your life -- MYOB is an acronym that you heard so many times they just needed the acronym -- and "life is not fair" could have been one, too. What the hell happened to all these other dweebs? If they had parents, they truly were shit.

Two comments. First, how you handle it today may not be how you handle it later. It takes a while for the full impact to make itself felt. I'm just saying that to help you be prepared. When it first happens, one tends to be numbed.
Second, I recommend discounting advice to get another pup at any given time. It was over a year before I could look at another pup without thinking of the end, and choking up with sadness. Let yourself heal. You'll know when it's time for another wet nose in your life.

Just remember that these folks all come from the "post-modernist" world where words mean whatever the f*** is convenient at the time. So "fair" does not mean "you worked extra hard so you benefit extra much" -- it means "the people who talk 'fair' do better than those actually producing value."

I think there are some things we can do in this regard. One of them is to stop letting them tell us their bullshit while we remain pleasant about it. If it is bullshit, we should just say so.
We have allowed them to define themselves as "cool," and us as the "old stodgy white guy." Every single day we should deny them their self image unchallenged.

As Woods was thanking Doherty, though, the attackers were adjusting their mortar fire, and getting closer with each volley. A French 81 mm round ended WoodsÂ’ life, though as he fell, his body shielded another security agent, saving his life.
Doherty was killed instantly by a direct hit on his position from another mortar round.
From below, several other agents rushed up to the roof and put themselves in the line of fire while they saved the other two menÂ’s lives. They lowered the bodies down with rope they had cut down from their gym. One JSOC agent strapped a wounded DSS man to his back, then climbed down a ladder under fire.

For many, they see that as true either way. The fact that the other side isn't any better in that regard was very well disguised by the wide-spread knowledge of the choom bus.
It is very interesting to me that so many can look down on the allies they want at election time because they are too rigid in their beliefs -- while, at the exact same time, remaining at least equally rigid in their views that those same people should be in jail, presumably starting the day after the election. Very unique sales pitch. I wonder why it isn't working better.
This is not a flinging of a gauntlet -- I won't argue in support of any of this, and I won't defend anyone's foolish decisions. I just want people here to take a moment to ponder -- how many will soon be in essentially the same position over weapons and new laws that would jail YOU over what you don't believe should be a crime.
