Light 'em up morons, it's Earf Hour (just ended here on the East Coast but you other time zone folks can play). Turn on all your lights, piss off your crunchy granola libtard neighbor and help prevent the next ice age or something. Of course, turning off the lights really achieves nothing. ONT Fashion?
So, this might be acceptable for ONT attire. Spray on jeans.
What Sequester?
So much for the hiring freeze. Federal government continues to post job openings. Granted, some of those jobs are necessary but some aren't like these.
a counsel for the Morris K. Udall Scholarship Foundation with a salary up to $155,000; a director for the Air Force History and Museums Policies and Programs with pay up to $165,300; law librarians at the Justice Department with salaries reaching $115,742; a Department of Labor assistant to answer phones at a top salary of $81,204; four public affairs specialists with salaries of up to $116,000; as well as several positions for painters for the Air Force and 23 recreation aides.
Answer phones for $81K?

Salad Can Kill
Paging Mayor Bloomberg. Ready to eat salad in a bag is more dangerous than a cheeseburger. Funny, the article calls them beefburgers. I guess with the rash of horsemeat burgers, they need to differentiate. It is cheaper to buy your own head of lettuce instead of the ready bags.
Star Wars Trutherism
I knew it! No way that farm boy did it.
Crime Of The Day
Didn't know drinking old whiskey was illegal. Man charged with drinking $102,000 worth of pre-Prohibition whiskey.
Hill had rented the basement apartment to John Saunders, 62. Saunders is now charged by Scottdale police with consuming 48 bottles of the historic whiskey. In a criminal complaint, Chief Barry Pritts wrote Saunders denied drinking the whiskey or removing labels from the bottles. Saunders reportedly told police he moved the cases to clean them several times but never opened any of the bottles.
Gas Taxes
States eye gas tax hikes to cover cash shortfalls, transportation projects. It would be more truthful if they just said cover cash shortfalls and not include transportation projects. If you're gonna raise gas taxes, how about reducing or eliminating ethanol in it. It would at least improve fuel mileage. In fact, you'd be doing the environment a favor and lowering food cots by eliminating ethanol.

She texted my husband while we were at dinner. She's been hired by an ATL ad agency, and she and her creative team are all *scratchy headed* over Obambacare, because their client is dealing with it and shit.
My husband said, "Do you understand the problems with the plan now?"
Dumb-ass sister, "Yeah, I kind of think so. Still, Obama is a better president than Bush."
I wanted to stab myself in the face with a steak knife.

Yes. She is a hard-core leftist (and "proud socialist") and we've been helping her survive the past few years.
Apparently, she's been writing for an ATL magazine, and advertising "creative" types fell in love with a piece she recently did mocking the new Pope.
Libs and atheists look after their own. At least she has a job now that doesn't involve cleaning houses. I'm actually grateful for that.

Well, "talk to the Baron, blame it on the serfs" is pretty close to "beef with the Baron? Slaughter his serfs." -- so we'll call those equivalent.
I'm continually amused that "strong-man socialism" is essentially feudalism with different buzzwords. While being a "Constitutional Republic" is much like having a Board of Directors, President, CEO/CFO, COO, Chairman of the Board -- and fiduciary responsibilities for officers, directors, and executives.

I want an LA like when I was a kid there -- a vanguard of creativity, no limits to gains from great efforts, "can-do" that didn't stop at landing on the moon or crops in a desert. The place for Sam Goldwyn, Collis Huntington (okay, okay, maybe Henry counts....), William Mulholland, Donald Douglas, Walt Disney, and so many others. Between the "I've got mine" and the "I deserve a piece" contingents today, it might as well be freakin' Detroit.

LA is Managerial Leftism, with a professional leftist class that pits interest groups against each other and pays *them* off.
Functionally, they're similar, but not structurally. I think LA actually has less overhead (but is still corrupt and wasteful).
SF is actually *both*, and developed a lot of pull in the State government in the past to set up a revenue stream to them to pay for all the crap. LA has more power *now* at the State level.
And it's all Gerrymandered as crap, and any dissent is given "safe" districts and no real ability to influence decisions.
Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at March 23, 2013 10:47 PM (bxiXv)
LA is now as corrupt as Chicago or Detroit -- the only difference is that there are some who live there who remember otherwise....but between those who have fled and those who have died, there are fewer every day.
And then the question turns to: has anyone ever turned around a totally leftist cesspool, or do they just implode?

Got to love making it through a phone interview and then a face to face interview. Then be told do not have enough experience.
Been in a running battle with dealership over Shelby repairs. Though right now it looks like everything works. They still have no idea why the fog light they said did not work, now works however.
And the reason Sean asked about the CX-4 is I had a midnight visitor last night. A black youth in all black asking for gas. Then turned on porch light and they see I am armed. Get polite then. Say I don't have spare gas. They say goodbye. I close and bolt door. Then text friend who works for Sheriff's department of encounter. He thinks the visitor probably had to change his shorts after seeing the CX-4. And I think I hear a car drive off.
Plus working on stories. And pondering the April Camp NaNoWriMo.
What's going with you?

I keep trying to convince a friend of mine to get her ass back to the US. She lives in Barcelona right now, and I'm worried that the situation in Spain could spiral out of control. In those circumstances being a foreigner with a job could put you in the crosshairs of a lot of angry people.

'Ancient Aliens' had an episode dealing with elongated human skulls. As I recall, they were found in many places around the world. Apparently, humans would wrap their heads to get the elongated effect possibly to give the appearance of greater intelligence.
They claimed it was done to make their children look more like aliens that may have been around at the time. I guess the aliens with lips hanging down to their stomachs only hung out in Africa.

You're probably not old enough to remember the series "Green Acres" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MzfDcAUkb8 ], but I am....and, unfortunately, so is my BH. To make it worse, she really is from New York, and I'm really a CPA. So we're having discussions about "how can I live somewhere there is no Whole Foods Market?" [There are 2 near Nashville, and they're building one in Knoxville.]
While nominally living in quite urban places, I've also ended up in some really rural situations (as in, sinking up to my crotch into the swampy compost of discarded carrot-tops from "bunny-luv" carrots while trying to hike across "untended" land near baseball practice). Not all of LA County is Wilshire Boulevard.
So a lot of my challenge is finding someplace that the BH will buy-in-to that is really as nice as most of the country. A place where the Feds are a long, long, long way away; the state is remote; the local constabulary is limited to dealing with important matters; and keeping faith with your neighbors will get you through the week.

Most fashions throughout history reflect two conditions: health or wealth. Corsets, for example, emphasized the breasts and hips, reflecting a healthy body that could bear children and nurse them successfully. Tiny feet are less useful for manual labor and thus reflect delicacy associated with higher class.

I'll grant you "strangest", if that's what you meant by "weirdest". I find the MS-13 style full-face and skull tattoos the most off-putting. My reaction would have been, "No, a salty pork chop will not kill me any time soon. It may result in your immediate demise, however, if you don't remove yourself from my sight immediately."
Then I'd call over the waitress and ask if they had any frozen pork chops. They're far more suitable for administering a beating.

Alex, you may be correct. Since I realized my personal philosophy has already caused 51% of the country to assume I'm just an unreconstructable racist bastard, I don't pay as much attention to the exact locales our illegally-present criminals tend to spawn from anymore. To me, one 3rd-world shithole is the same as the next, unless they have good fishing and some nice reef diving. That said, if they are Salvadoran (and now I'm thinking you're correct), my inner need to be right will force me to bing and make sure.

Officially he went there for the scuba diving. There were rumors of pedophilia, he was investigated twice based on rumors but not charged, he denied it, and there were no *specific* charges against him, just general charges. No victim was identified.
In 2008 the Sri Lankan government opened the case again and found *nothing* to charge him with, they actually went as far as to declare him innocent. That was shortly before he died.
There was a particular political advocate in Sri Lanka who liked to send reports to British papers, whom Clarke threatened to sue.
Unless someone brings specific charges, we'll never know - and false rumors are absolutely *legion*.

I've heard about some of the cave dives in MO...there's just too few links in the critical chain for me to get underwater and under rock while carrying a limited air supply. Cave diving tends to kill its enthusiasts at a fairly high rate. The best survive and thrive, while the others...don't.

Sorry you had that experience, but glad you made it to the other side. Devil's Throat and Tormentos were two of my favorite dives ever. If you ever decide to take a diving vacation, check out Bonaire - it's sleepy, but they have the best 40-60' dives I've ever seen, with negligible current and tons of things to see. There's more challenging dives available, but honestly there's no need unless that's your thing. I cannot recommend it enough.

Roger that, Cheri, but any diver that gets into the water without the ability to manage their dive and co-op with their buddy in a safe manner and according to plan is just asking for a visit to the chamber at best, and the morgue at worst. My assumption every time I get in the water is that the DM / guide is a fool until proven otherwise, and even then it's a short leash. Thanks for what you do.

careful of the diving company you choose. They kill a lot of people and
you rarely hear about it. Having worked off of the coasts of Fl and CA
we had diving accidents almost on a daily basis. Most were fatal if we couldn't get them to a hypobaric chamber.
Posted by: Cheri at March 24, 2013 01:08 AM (EAgmr)
On our last dive vacation, the BH spent an unexpected two weeks at the Hyperbaric Treatment Center at Kuakini.
If anyone wants to talk about luck, it was a totally bogus hit -- within tables, within (conservative) computers....but within medivac radius of the finest treatment center we know of, with possibly the best DCS physicians in the world. One "trademark" move upon admittance is the "Kuakini Spike", where she was immediately compressed to 200 fsw and evaluated. In case you're wondering, this tells you what degree of impairment is due to actual nitrogen bubbles v. inflammation from prior irritation.
It is important to choose competent dive operators -- look at those poor SOBs whose story lead to "Open Water". But when it comes to the bends, there's more. You are responsible for your logs, your calcs, your computers, your dives....not the operators. You are are responsible for being insured, having contacts after the dive, using your head, getting help.....not the operators. And once treatment begins, you have a lot to do with a successful outcome.

didn't dive with Efra Figueroa out of Fajardo, or hang out at the Reef
Pop afterward. The guy has like 14 quadrillion logged dives, is
certified with everyone from PADI to YMCA, and can motor out 10 miles
from shore in any direction and describe the terrain at the bottom from
memory. We had the funnest time with him and got some awesome Christmas
card pix wearing "Santa hats" underwater.

There's experience and experience and experience and experience.....you could tell me that you were the #1 expert on diving rock quarries in Appalachia, and I'd "ooh" and "aah", because there's something to learn everywhere. There was a guy along with our boat -- some sort of Scandi -- that had ended up with Efra for a couple of years...."ooh", "aah"....'cause he knew the area. I've been some nice places -- enough to refute someone saying "Puerto Rico sucks"....but I'm not a well-known SCUBA expert. It's all in what you know.

He's a man of the left (or as Ace would say, A Man of The Left) in everything he does, and he knows that the ratchet of government control only moves in one direction. Barry may be all the things we say he is, but if you admit his original goal was to divide and diminish the nation in order to rebuild it in the left's own image, his first term was a smashing success.

As a fellow who has flown off a waverunner at 75mph after miscalculating how to correctly hit a boat's wake (skip................skip......skip...) I can attest to the hardness of water. It's like walking by an annoying drunk on the sidewalk, day after day, and yelling at him over the fact he smells or that he spouts nonsensical political rants. Sure, he's a pest, but it's tragic.
You talking about a guy who probably has a bad relationship with his family, is miserable at his job (if he still has one), and has few friends.

Cruise some thrift stores and see if you can scare up an IBM Model M. 101 key, no frills, clicky positive tactile feedback, weighs a ton, lasts forever.
Avoid the ones on eBay being touted as Model M's that have a double row of keys above the normal keyboard section. Those are for old 3270 style mainframe terminals and will be worthless for a PC.
The best are the ones with a RJ connector for a thick coil cord. The one with integral non detachable cord have a thinner cord and are not as good. The Eduquest one kinda sucked actually and were squishy, not clicky.
You want a late 1980's vintage one that came with the first PS/2 machines. The early 90's versions are OK, if that's all you can find though.
Good working Model M's on eBay are going for $30-$40. When a new craptastic Chinese squish master can be had for $20 at Walmart, that says a LOT about the desirability of the vaunted 101 key Model M's.

So the chocolate ration is REALLY gonna go up eh?
Sucky being out in the weather. I don't know why they plan jobs this way. Do the dirt work and building shell/exterior work when its warm, and save all the interior crap for the bad weather makes more sense.
Everything is 10X harder when the weather sucks.

Sounds like he is reaching out to anyone for support at this stage. He seems to be starved emotionally. Where is his support network- family and friends?
