— Pixy Misa Last night's ONT found me extolling the virtues of the internet as a tool for creative-types and lamenting the seemingly inverse relationship between the availability of rich, high quality content on the web and the average person's capacity to fully absorb it. Upon reflection, it occurs to me that I was essentially making a point, however scattered, about the double-edged-sword nature of the explosion in the availability of rich, high-quality content. Consuming media on the internet these days is a wharrgarblian task.
There's another aspect of the internet that carries a similar trade-off as it relates to person-to-person interaction. (I realize this is at least the fifth post ever written on the internet about its dehumanizing effects, but bear with me here.) It seems that for a lot of people, along with the ability to instantly communicate with people comes the irresistible compulsion to do it shabbily. Well, I'm here to help.
Call me a babe in the woods, but I happen to think there's still something to be said for basic common courtesy in person-to-person correspondence, no matter how informal. I've always found that in communicating with someone, whether through email or a blog comment, it's best to start off on a reasonably polite note. Greetings and salutations might be a bit much, but alternatively, if you jump right in with a simpering philippic most normal people will give it a cursory scan and conjure the mental image below:
Ironically enough, I think the tendency to behave that way on the internet has a great deal to do with the image a person is trying to put forth; they honestly believe they look better by coming off as an insufferable prig than they would if they were more mannerly and civil. They just don't understand how they really look to everyone else around them. I've been trying to come up with a good analogy to describe it, and I think it is pretty well summed up in this story.
"The water did have a funny taste," Sabrina Baugh told CNN on Wednesday. She and her husband used the water for eight days."We never thought anything of it," the British woman said. "We thought it was just the way it was here."
What she described was not normal.
If you imagine everyone else around you as the guests in that hotel, and you and your comment as the source of that funny-tasting water, you have a pretty good idea of just what kind of impression you're making on others.
Now, I'll admit to less than pristine hands on the matter. I've composed my share of dyspeptic screeds over the years. But, that's generally a consequence of having major disagreements on matters I feel passionately about -- particularly as it relates to politics. But, I'm talking about something else, here. What I'm talking about is the immediate and uncontrollable urge among some people to fling poo over the most minor point of contention. (Click image to view in full.)
The surprising thing about this phenomenon is how long people will persist in such behavior before it dawns on them that they're not really coming off as the too-hip-for-the-room, irreverent anti-hero they imagine themselves to be. Almost invariably, the person who delights in always being the loudest, most caustic voice in the room will end up in a flame war, suddenly look around at everyone else, note all the furrowed brows, and wonder why no one's there to back them up.
All of this would be fine if the consequences of that kind of behavior stopped with the person who engaged in it. Unfortunately, it doesn't. In fact, like the body in the water tank in the story linked above, that kind of attitude taints everything around it. And the ultimate result is that people of generally good will have less reason to assume that the other people they're dealing with share that good will, which in turn leads to communication breakdown. Suddenly, the idea of creating a new class of punctuation for the sake of clarity seems reasonable. (Click image to view in full.)
Thankfully, though, there are still people in the world who appreciate the importance of communicating with others in a forthright and reasonably humble manner. We all forget it sometimes, but on those occasions when we do, taking the time to rectify the situation in such a way is often all that's needed. I can't begin to count the number of times I've felt pangs of regret for something I've said or done and remedied the entire matter by simply acknowledging my culpability and doing my best to set things right.
Now, maybe you're one of those people, and maybe you're not. Deep-down, though, you know whether or not you are. And maybe you're just the kind of sociopath who actually enjoys being that way -- in which case, I pity you. You'll eventually get your comeuppance.
But, if you do a little self-reflection and determine that you don't really want people to have that kind of an impression of you, then you're well on your way to becoming a normal, functioning adult. The first, most important step in becoming a better person is admitting you have a problem.
Tonight's ONT is brought to you by bards.

I think we've allowed the kids to be programmed to self-destruct though....and I want to hit my head with a hammer for being forced to think that way....

If Florida's Gov. Scott does lose reelection next year he can always go back to hollywood and revive his acting career. Using the name Michael Berryman, he starred in quite a few films including, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and The Hills Have Eyes.

I heard a car sounding like a car sounds when it's high-centered and not making any headway earlier this evening.
I look outside, and it's the twenty-something son of the neighbor across the cul-de-sac, trying to get his car up the very, very slight slope of the (snow-cleared) driveway to park in the garage.
He was spinning his tires. A lot. He finally made it, but I was about to put on the boots and the coat and head over there to help him out---because I had visions of him hitting a stray patch of good traction and sending his car flying through the far wall of the garage.
Usage note for winter-driver-neophytes: if you're spinning your tires, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

Yup, high-centered. Get out the shovels, and find something you can put in front of the drive tires to get some traction. Oddly enough, a shovel place in front of one of the drive wheels sometimes is enough.
Another winter-driving-usage-note for neophytes: Never, EVER come to a complete stop, if you can help it. ALSO, and this IS IMPORTANT, never go fast enough that you will, if you hit something, do more than bend a bit of metal. You can replace metal.

Because the drive wheels are always pulling, and if you are trying to stop you will have to stand on the brakes harder to overcome that, which could cause the brakes to lock.
Of course in this new-fangled world with antilock brakes and the like, this is mostly bullshit now. However, when one is driving a 1962 Chevrolet pickup with drum brakes, a 300HP 350 CID engine and a TH350 trans, one learns very quickly to shift into neutral to stop.
Of course, one also learns very quickly not to drive that no-traction getting sonofabitch in the snow if one can help it...

Imo; with abs this is not a problem and with regular brakes pumping will also help. Neutral leaves you with one more thing to think about when you're already overloaded and (if you know how to drive on slippery surfaces) being in gear can actually assist in avoiding getting stuck or losing control.
I go with leaving the tranny to worrying about itself and at most putting into Low.
the most important thing you can do in a storm (other than not driving) is to DRIVE SLOW. Even if the road is plowed, your adhesion to the surface is drastically reduced and usually is the worst right where you need it the most.

The local TV newsies did "man-in-the-street" interviews asking people what they would do if they hit a patch of ice or snow on the road. One interviewee literally said, " I think I would curl up in the seat of my car and cry for my mother."

Back when I was 16 and studying for a real estate license, I actually studied all those old measurements. Turns out, the California land grant system was so screwed up that you might need to know the difference in your land measured in California vara (33 inches) or the Spanish vara (32.91 inches) based on the identity of the grantor (if you got a Royal grant from the King of Spain, it would be in Spanish varas....if you got it from the Governor of California, it could go either way.....if you got it from your neighbor, it'd be in California varas).

What venue did this happen-
“Sometimes it can be difficult finding your G spot by yourself, because it involves inserting a finger or fingers inside the vagina into the front wall of the body, and that kind of results in an awkward, kind of clawlike hand position,” Weinberg said, demonstrating with a pawing motion as the audience giggled. “Obviously, there are better ways you can position your body. Or if you’ve got a partner, you can get your partner to insert their finger or fingers inside your vagina in the front wall of your body in a sort of a J curve"

The BH and I went to a dive resort in Honduras where our quarters overlooked the dock -- which, as is usual, floated between piers that were like short telephone poles so that it would move with the tides. One morning, we got up and looked out the window before going to breakfast, and each of the eight piers had a vulture perched on top.
We almost didn't go diving that day.

It's supposed to start 15 days after the pope croaks -- but, in this case, Benedict gave notice that he's out 2/28. So it'll start 3/15 or earlier. All the Cardinals are supposed to be in town for some wild party on 2/27, anyway, so there shouldn't be much need for travel time.

Other interesting observations lately. I was waiting for a train to pass and about 50 feet away a guy was getting a BJ at 4 in the afternoon in the front seat of his car in a parking lot. I thought about honking and giving him a thumbs up but it would have broken his concentration.
Today I went to buy some gas. The station signed advertised regular for $3.79 a gallon but the pumps were selling it for $2.79 a gallon. All three grades were under $3. I do believe corporate sends out the rates directly to the pumps so it is possible BP was selling gas a dollar off today at muliple stations accidentally.

Get them a giftcard for shooting lessons at a local range. That way they get to pick out a gun (to rent) and be around other novices. May lessen the pressure and guilt might get them to use it.

Ayoob is a MUCH bigger fan of the 20 GA than 12 for most users....
I'd go with the Mossy or Maverick in 20 GA depending on your folks' neighborhoods' view on such things you can make it look hunterish or go Tactical.
Oddly the Combat Engineers who have used military shotguns express a preference for 5 shot over 7 for handiness....
I'm a 7 shot for happiness guy but then again the actual military application of shotguns has point fire as a secondary role.
Here's the Mavericak line from mossberg for an entry level weapon.

MSRP in the ~250ish range.....
they have a majority interchangeability with the Mossy series.

See, we have laws pertaining to marriage that ultimately can't be applied to a gay couple. For example... presumptive paternity.
Presumptive paternity cannot be an issue when the couple in question is two men. After all, no matter how much a man cheats, or with whom, he can't get pregnant from it. When it's two women, well, it's possible, but no divorce court judge would ever enforce presumptive paternity, because, quite frankly, it's ludicrous to declare a woman to be the father of a child conceived by her wife cheating on her.
So, that right there means that a gay couple cannot legally be treated the same as a straight couple. And if they can't legally be treated the same, then their unions can't have the same legal definition.

"Pope" is, technically, a nickname. All bishops at one point were "πάππας", but as the church grew its head became the one most "popish". As history makes abundantly clear from the myriad schisms, councils, and heresies, the Pope is is the head of the Roman Catholic Church because the Roman Catholic Church is the organization headed by the Pope. Protestant poking at the source of this fails to recognize the inherent strength of such circularity -- you might as well ask "where is the Arian tradition in Catholicism?" The answer is "out, banned, and excommunicated. Twice" (in 325 AD and again in 381 AD).

Same argument I have used, only a little bit different. I have a friend who was making 350K a year, and his scrunt wife and her dyke lawyer made sure he slowly went insane. She would make up bullshit and have the cops after him. He spent almost 400K on legal bills while this fucking cunt lied her ass off and did everything she could to make him look insane. He ended up homeless, out of his mind, and living in the woods talking to trees.
When a gay stands up in divorce court and says treat me like the man and rake me over the coals, then they can have their fucking marriage. Until then they can go fuck themselves.

I've been talking about gay marriage for years, and my opinion hasn't changed a wink in that time. I know gay couples, they're good people, wish 'em all the best, but there is some serious loose shit in the legalisms of marriage and we'd all be better served if it were cleaned up before we expanded the pilot project to new users. And I say this as someone working on my third unwedded decade with my BH. Why is there so much misery in family court? Why are there so many prenups? Why do so many forego marriage entirely?
Why not fix something that might only be working at 55% before dumping another 20% of people into it that work against its limited successes? Your example is a good one -- presumptive paternity in an age of promiscuity is only working at 55%, max, judging from all those child support cases out there.....so why dump in another bunch of people for whom the 55% is a physical impossibility?

And even they didn't have gay marriage. When it was time for a man to marry, he still married a woman. She shaved her head and dressed like a man for the wedding, so as not to spook her groom, who wasn't used to the idea of vagina, but marriage was still a man and woman thing.

Genetic? I don't think so. the discovery of this as a cause, was only recently posited and is just too convenient for those who are demanding special accommodation.

What you point out is actually an argument against it being genetic.
A gene wouldn't normally affect so many different behaviors.
An environmental cause would. (by environmental, I also mean the stereotypes and other behaviors associated with females (for males) and males (for females) as being common.
The lisping flamer. the burly, flannel shirt wearing dyke.
Those are stereotypes that actually aren't as typical as you make them out to be. That may be what you've seen but there are far more undetectable gay people.

Let's get specific -- Gabriel Malor's here most every day, I've met him, he's a good guy.....actually a really standup guy. Gabe's gay, and is a proponent of gay marriage. When I talked to him, I did my best to explain my position and he heard me out respectfully.....but I didn't get his heart to be unconvinced -- which I regret, because I'm really trying for what's best for everyone.
But I also get that his heart yearns. I know that he loves desperately and passionately, as do we all who share this sadly mortal sphere, and that he wants to build a life with his partner. And I completely support him in that and sincerely wish him all the best.
But there is so much antiquated and counterfactual crap built into the State's view of marriage that I cannot wish him to be part of it unless and until it is reformed. I don't begrudge him anything -- not the presumption of inheritance, hospital visitation, better combined tax rates (if applicable)....I just don't want him inside a teetering, unsafe structure propped up by mad bureaucrats when the thing's on the verge of collapse.
Take, for instance, the joy of employment law. If you are a male and have a female employee who regularly exhibits subpar performance of an antagonistic, overaggressive nature for three days beginning every 28th day from the last episode, it is prima facie "sexual harassment" if you suggest she is mighty unpleasant when she's "on the rag" and should see a doctor before she gets herself fired -- even if you're gay, this is basic detective work, and it should be ultimately helpful for the employee to take your advice. If you are married, your spouse's assets can be attached in the resulting lawsuit -- so your gay spouse may be financially harmed by your non-sexual commonsense recommendation within the scope of your employment. It's nonsense on stilts -- and, frankly, there's much more of this sort of thing than the public knows about, because it's hushed up behind closed doors and ridiculous idiots tossing M-and-Ms at nipples get more press.
The same can be true of women, contrariwise -- commonsense behavior is shoved into gender stereotypes by officious bureaucrats, and the resulting mess is blamed on the supervisor. You could have the most extreme bull-dyke manager on the planet telling the swishy-est male phone support person to tone it down, and end up with a lawsuit that said "she gave me a bad review based on 'yelling at customers' because she was hostile to my masculinity" -- and the supervisor's partner could lose their life's savings.
It is ironic that "due process" is currently thought to be the key for gays to enter into State-defined matrimony, when the worst excesses of State-defined matrimony are uttermost failures of due process. You don't have to be straight or gay to know things are messed-up. You don't have to go into explicit discussions of anything to know there isn't a fair shake. You don't have to resort to name-calling to say you disagree. And you don't have to be anti-love to oppose gay marriage.

cthulhu: Severely O/T, but you might find this useful, for later reference
eBay Item 380440515759. The pictures and features are educational; the sort of stuff worth remembering "for later". 4 axes will do a lot of things, and the price looks ok ... figuring that needed software and a lot of electronics are not included.
But they have a showroom in Pomona, so if you're ever down there ...

There's something odd going on, some sort of weird pricing anomaly....which means there may be money to be made. I'm seeing some parts of CNC just plummeting -- stuff that should cost $10 going for $1.....while I'm seeing other things that are going for more than I'd expect -- like, frankly, this guy.
Remember that I'm fundamentally an accountant. I've worked with machining; I've worked with robotics -- but, y'know, CPA. So let's talk three datapoints -- envelope, precision, dollars. This thing says "X: 11"; Y: 6-5/16"; Z: 10-5/8"", "0.00059"", and $7500. Let's just pop in LMS' CNC...."X: 10.2; Y: 4.3; Z: 7.1"; "0.0004"; and we'll just say $4800 delivered, from a storefront. That's 0.8 on the X (have you seen the "extended X by taking off the endcaps" vid?); 2 on the Y, and 3.5 on the Z. If that's a ballscrew issue only (and why wouldn't it be?) CNC Fusion has the difference between kit #112 and the kit #5 (LMC) for Sieg X2 CNC conversions as $46 -- which, according to http://www.littlemachineshop.com/Info/minimill_compare.php , gets you X: 1.8; Y: 1.1; Z: 0.8.
Extending the leadscrews gets you less precision, but why should extending the leadscrews by less than two inches while accepting a precision change from 0.0004 to 0.00059 (almost 50% increase!) (LMS -> Bolton) cost $2700 when extending leadscrews by almost 5" costs only $46? (Harbor -> LMS). Sure, it's going to be slower with the slower spindle. Yeah, it'll be less stable 'cause it weighs 1/5 as much....but $2700 v. $50?!??!? Oh, yeah....you get another axis......
I'm sensing a disconnect somewhere.

Buck the cat died today. He was just old. Already adult when he picked us up, in the fall of 1999. Told his story just recently here:

He was one cool long-tailed yellow tomcat.

That is a very sweet story, and a wonderful remembrance of a respected friend....but when it got here it had dust all over it.

Definitely very interested in the Marlin 795. Model 60 looked pretty nice, but the tube-fed magazine sounded a little awkward from a usability PoV.

And for bonus content, the is the commentator barking up the wrong tree to claim these black and white photos are mere recreations and in fact the models are ugly?
Discuss.

Something I found particularly amusing is that the artist continually takes liberties with the model's frame. For example, the painted image is considerably thinner in the first two paintings -- bedsheets and pelican; about the same in the next three -- fireplace, cowgirl, and sofa; more developed in the next four -- valentine, doghouse, swing, and slide; then less developed in "stump". It's almost like the artist likes women in all their varied forms and not just boys with tits, as you might find in today's art.
I'm well aware that personality can vary physical perception -- a girl with a smile is two points ahead of one without, no matter a man's preference for body parts or coloration. But having "pelican" and "stump" get less busty when the artist has his way is somewhat illuminating. It's like it all has to work together or something.

They say El Greco had a similar problem, but outside some hilltop ascetics, nobody took it this seriously. Ah well, the variety of religious experience, and all.
