Overnight Open Thread (SMODLET Edition)

Well this does not surprise me. The State Of The Union Is......Dumber. Pretty funny that W scored higher than the vaunted Constitutional Law professor. Chubby Checker

Good Lord, they really do have an app for everything. Chubby Checker Sues Hewlett Packard Over Penis App.

Chubby Checker is suing Hewlett-Packard for “all profits” received from the sale of the penis sizing application. That figure is close to $500 million.

I call BS on this. No way that app has made $500M. No way.

The Next Big Spice

Every year, McCormack lists spices that they think will be big in cooking and this year, they think Dukkah And Broccoli will be it. What's dukkah you ask?

Dukkah is an Egyptian blend of cumin, coriander, sesame and nuts. It mostly appears in olive oil as a dipping sauce for table bread in American eateries, but McCormick chefs say uses can extend to toppings for soups, stews and salads.

OK

So do you know what "OK" Stands For?

The time was 1839. In Boston and New York, slang abbreviations were all the rage with the abbreviations often representing deliberately misspelled slang phrases like “KY” for “know yuse”; “OW” for “oll wright” (the predecessor of “oll korrect”); “KG” for “know go”; “NS” for “nuff said”; and many many others.

OK is one of the few of these abbreviations to survive. It managed to do so largely because of an 1840 New York campaign slogan by boosters of Martin Van Buren for re-election. Van Buren’s nickname was “Old Kinderhook”; so this group made their name the “O.K. Club”, thus having the double meaning of “oll korrect” and “Old Kinderhook”. As you might expect, this also gave rise to Van Buren’s opponents quipping that Van Buren’s supporters were all illiterate.

Another Study Of The Obvious

Well duh! Women Are Intolerant Of Sexy Peers.

In Study 1, an experimental design was used to test the evolutionary-based hypothesis that women would be intolerant of sexy women and would censure those who seem to make sex too readily available. Results provide strong empirical support for intrasexual competition among women. Using independent raters, blind to condition, we found that almost all women were rated as reacting negatively (“bitchy”) to an attractive female confederate when she was dressed in a sexually provocative manner. In contrast, when she was dressed conservatively, the same confederate was barely noticed by the participants. In Study 2, an experimental design was used to assess whether the sexy female confederate from Study 1 was viewed as a sexual rival by women. Results indicated that as hypothesized, women did not want to introduce her to their boyfriend, allow him to spend time alone with her, or be friends with her.

People have no idea what's coming down the pike with O'care.  They are simply clueless.  I've had idiots say to me "Well, I'm just glad my kids can stay on my husband's insurance til their 26".  "Well, I don't have a cadillac healthcare plan so it won't affect me."  "I think it's great that everyone is going to have health insurance, and that it's going to be more affordable."

As a nurse, I just shake my head.  Meanwhile, SEIU has a campaign going on at my hospital to "raise staffing to safe levels".  The Union wants our hospital to hire more nurses.  Yeah, because with decreased reimbursement and increased costs of operating, there's money for that.  Uh, sure.

Not sure how much longer I can continue to be a nurse.

So this is a funny story.  My co-worker, who is Korean, asked me if she could borrow my hospital photo ID at work the other day.  She was going up to the pre-surgical holding area to interview her patient, and the hospital has a rule that you must always wear your ID in patient areas.  I gave it to her and one of our co-workers asked why I gave it to her.  I told her "Because all us Asians look alike, and the patient won't even notice it's not her."

One of the problems I see with throw away marriages is in what you said. I can still to this day see the ex as a 20 year old chick (the crazy is strong in that one so it is only a visual not a chance of rekindle) but any new woman I meet is the age she is. I kick myself now for picking poorly cause I don't think I'll find a new wife now.  But the real point is I bet your wife sees you also as you were when she met you and unless you looked like Drew Carey at that point it's the reason she still lets you into bed.

(I realize now I may have assumed something not in evidence for this point that you have been married for some time. If you just married her than good for you.)

Ah, but it will harm the community at large.  The doctors I have seen going into concierge medicine are the best ones.  So the community at large is being deprived of their excellent care.  Meanwhile, I have to say that the residents we've been seeing as of late haven't been all that impressive and a bit entitled.  It's scary to think that these are the people who will be taking care of me.

If you can find the exact location of where it worked well for several years push it back to there. (may be spots where the legs sat for those years as indicators). Probably an unbalanced load moved it and basement floors are rarely even/level. Or as others have said level it in it's new location.

It's equality of access, not equality of outcome.  Any doc will tell you that with a smaller patient set and not burdened by Medicare regulations, better care can be delivered.

As for how it is determined, that's a self-policing function.  Also irrelevent, because there is always an ER to serve as primary care thanks to EMTALA.

The government will leverage concierge doctors out of business via credentialing rules.  In order to admit a patient to the hospital, a doctor must be a credentialed member of the medical staff of that hospital.  Hospitals are all beholden to CMS (Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services).   CMS requires hospitals to abide by very restrictive rules in order to receive Medicare reimbursements.  So CMS will squeeze the hospitals to restrict their medical staffs to docs who accept Medicare.  This is already happening.

Concierge docs tend to serve only a small niche population, but any notion of free market type medical practice MUST be exterminated.

Still kinda frustrated that I lost my job, I'm just drunkenly yelling in the street. I made my way to the hospital, and for some stupid reason....go inside. Ugh. He cant even practice law since he voluntarily gave up his license so that he wouldnt be disbarred for lying on his college financial aid application claiming to be a indonesian citizen.

Something he and his lovely wife have in common. She surrendered her law license too. Nothing to see here, though, nothing to see.

I'm convinced they both dipped into client's escrow accounts. They had some financial backers pay it back, and "voluntarily" surrendered their license. I have several friends who don't practice law any longer, and were at the same age they surrendered their licenses. The difference, these people just put theirs on "inactive" which means they can "reactivate" at a later time if they catch up on their continuing education.

Hell, I'm a real estate broker and every old timer I know keeps their licenses active "just because".  All say the same thing, "you just never know when you will need it".

380 well I just finished watching the local news and all 4 anti-gun bills cleared the Colorado House: no concealed carry on campus, extended magazines prohibited, fee for background check, and something called 'expanded background check', whatever that means.

Also, some House Dems claimed to have received death threats, and the local news (CBS affiliate) reported this as fact.

They showed a few Democrats making remarks in session, but only one Republican. The Dem House member from Boulder standing up there telling the room what people do and do not need when it comes to guns. I tried to decipher what her point was, and I think she was saying that college kids are stupid, so let's not expose them to guns on campus. Because that will stop guns on campus! or something.

The bills now go to the Colorado Senate, where the Repubs are also in the minority, so the legislation will certainly pass there.

And of course Governor Fuckenloopy will sign them.

That's demographics in action. Under the Republican former governor, Bill Owens, CO passed laws allowing concealed carry, and wiped out all local anti-gun ordinances. But in the years since, enough people have come here from California and Illinois and Washington and Oregon AND MEXICO that all this is in danger of being reversed.

And I am thinking about moving to Wyoming.

At close to the 72 hour time limit, a judge comes to hold a hearing, and a lawyer is present to represent the patient. They pretty much tell the patient what to say if they want to leave, but you can just sit their and watch the patient do everything to not answer the question "correctly".

I don't think this is true anymore in the age of the web and omnipresent porn or even artier nudes. I remember women in Playboy when I was a kid who would never make the cut today. Not that they weren't attractive but between health standards, cultural standards making it far easier to find women willing to pose for a large sum of money ($25K these days), and the general competition from lesser sources, Playboy has to be a lot choosier today.

In my work I tend to see a lot of personal photo collections I'd as soon left unseen but I have to take a cursory glance just to know the data recovery succeeded. I'm occasionally amazed by the mediocrity of the porn some people bother to keep. I'm always tempted to ask what the attraction is when stuff of far higher quality is widely. It's come to my attention that there are a couple operations that seem to specialize in doing high quality photography of women who would never be models in most circumstances. I don't know if the idea is that they're more accessible in the viewer's fantasy participation or what.

I know for myself, I have high requirements for women in porn that has no relation at all to real life. Since photos and video only engage a single sensory aspect, the visual must be of much higher quality than in real life where many other elements can make for an intense attraction.

Like not running away or producing a weapon.

I f'ing hated it. Yeah, Pitt's done some good stuff (I liked the recent "Moneyball"), but this... thing... was just some political activist's rant in a screenplay disguised as a small time crime flick. I don't have to have likable characters in those sorts of films, I was interested in seeing what happened to the 2 hold up guys. But every couple of minutes there was this in situ radio or tv commentary about the financial crisis or TFG's election. Like all crims are constantly listening to the news in their cars, or watching it in bars, etc. Yeah, right. It took me out of the movie, big time. Then there was the big symbolic conversation at the end with Barry's coronation on TV. Pathetic.

Plus the ability to rant. I like a good rant. In fact, I have one stored up. There's been a lot of ink lately about the stupid Dems and their gun grabbing goofiness, but by no means do they have a lock on teh stoopid.

The Republicans in NC are pushing a bill that makes showing a titty in public into a felony!!!! Apparently the bill is moving forward. No word on whether or not male nipples are including in this idiocy, but I'm guessing not.

A bill that could send women to prison for going topless in public appears headed for approval by the North Carolina legislature.

The Republican-backed bill headed to a floor vote in the House would amend the state's indecent exposure law to expand the legal definition of "private parts" to explicitly include "the nipple, or any portion of the areola, or the female breast."

593 WAR is a way to try to numerically quantify how good a player is.  The replacement number is something like 80% of the mean(?) of all players for that position for various statistics--so in theory about as good as a AAA call-up.  Certain positions are worth more than others.  Interesting statistic, it doesn't always correlate with reputation.  It does show, though, that for a span of 5 years, Chase Utley was the best player in baseball not named Albert Pujols.

Most of those sites that present the woman as an independent operator are actually franchises in a network of such sites. It's a bid to catch some of the same vibe women like Asia Carrera and Danni Ashe created by supposedly teaching themselves HTML and creating their own initial sites. I had an acquaintance who worked for Danni Ashe before it went hard core, (I believe she sold off the name and the company at the same time) and he doubted the site she created was used more than a few months before she hired a pro or what passed for one back then. This acquaintance is also the owner of the Honda X-wing you might have seen images of or driving around LA.

Check out Atlantis Word Processor. It's very inexpensive at $35, runs on very old systems quite well as it has a remarkably tiny memory footprint, and a big bonus feature is that it will save directly to EPUB.

You still need to run a conversion to produce a Kindle file but EPUB has far more and better tools (most notably Sigil) available for tweaking, so it's best to do most of the work in that format then convert for submission to Amazon.

It can be the "kiss of death" to try to knock off the majority or minority leader since they usually have gotten their jobs by knowing where all the skeletons and dead little girls and live little boys are.

706 The problems with the "concierge medical services" story are obvious from an actual reading (as distinct from a Moronlifebased model skim): This "planning", not 'current'. The 10% in the story doesn't describe the percent DOING it, it actually just rounds up the percent the survey analyst decided had, were now and might in future, maybe who the fucks knows what tomorrow brings, consider it, and for all we know even all who didn't outright reject it or tell the surveyor something like, It's irrelevant to my current situation, my future plans, my desires, my views on proper delivery of medical care, my worldview, and frankly I stab myself in the colon with a beer keg line to a barrel of botulism before I did that. I think it MIGHT work for a small percent of boutique situations, mostly in large urban centers which have some serious degree of strange political evolution and denialism going on, so pretty much most of south Florida, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Lexington, Pittsburgh maybe ... all of Wyoming of course, which is way over doctored and only contains 2 types of patients: Cheney and the other 0.2% of Americans, so only two types of physicians: cardiologists and other specialists consulting on Cheney, which accounts for 90% of the state economy, and two gay women doctors living out of mobile operation during ski season.
